OBJETIVO: A uréia é comumente usada como substância queratolítica no tratamento das onicomicoses no intuito de melhorar a penetração das drogas antifúngicas. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a ação inibitória in vitro da uréia em amostras de dermatófitos MÉTODOS: A concentração inibitória mínima da uréia foi determinada para trinta e uma amostras de dermatófitos semeadas em meio de cultura Sabouraud-dextrose contendo diferentes concentrações (7,5% até 40%) de uréia. Ausência de crescimento foi o critério adotado para a determinação da concentração inibitória mínima. RESULTADOS: A maioria das amostras (87%) foi sensível à uréia em concentrações de 12,5% ou menos. Apenas dois isolados de Trichophyton tonsurans e dois de Trichophyton rubrum foram inibidos completamente na presença de 30% e 40% de uréia, respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados in vitro demonstraram atividade inibitória da uréia sobre os dermatófitos, sugerindo que possa ser usada como um adjuvante em tratamentos tópicos.

OBJECTIVE: Urea is commonly used as a keratolytic substance in the treatment of onychomycoses to improve the penetration of antifungal drugs in the lesion sites. The aim of the present study was to investigate the inhibitory action of urea on samples of dermatophytes in vitro. METHOD: Minimum inhibitory concentration of urea was determined for 31 samples of dermatophytes cultured in Sabouraud-dextrose broth containing different concentrations (7.5% up to 40%) of urea. Absence of growth was the criterion adopted to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration. RESULTS: The majority of samples (87%) were sensitive to urea at 12.5%, or less. 2 isolates of Trichophyton tonsurans and 2 of Trichophyton rubrum required 30%, and 40% urea, respectively, to be completely inhibited. CONCLUSION: In vitro results demonstrate inhibitory activity of urea on dermatophytes, suggesting that it could be used as an adjuvant in topical treatments.

Os autores registram em paciente do sexo masculino, vendedor ambulante sem qualquer doença de base, lesão cutânea extensa, localizada no antebraço esquerdo, sob forma ulcerada, provocada pelo Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii sorotipo B. Sucesso terapêutico com fluconazol, por via oral. Revisão da literatura foi realizada, mostrando raridade de tal localização em pacientes HIV-negativos. Já em pacientes HIV-positivos, lesões cutâneas ocorrem com freqüência, predominando como agente etiológico o Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans, sorotipo A. A patogenicidade do C. neoformans nas lesões cutâneas é discutida em pacientes imunocomprometidos ou não, mostrando a eficácia do fluconazol no tratamento de tais processos.

The authors report a male patient, a seller with no detected immunosuppression, with an extensive ulcerated skin lesion localized on the left forearm, caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii serotype B. Oral treatment with fluconazole was successful. A review of the literature showed the rarity of this localization in HIV-negative patients. In contrast, skin lesions frequently occurs in HIV-positive patients, with Cryptococcus neoformans var. neoformans serotype A predominating as the etiological agent. In this paper, the pathogenicity of C. neoformans to skin lesions in patients immunocompromised or not, is discussed, showing the efficacy of fluconazole for the treatment of these processes.

We report a case of cutaneous infection caused by Phialemonium curvatum GAMS et COOKE, 1983, after bone marrow transplantation. The genus Phialemonium was created by GAMS & MCGINNIS in 1983 including three new species: Ph. obovatum, Ph. curvatum and Ph. dimorphosporum, and represents an intermediate genus between Acremonium and Phialophora. Nowadays, the genus Phialemonium is considered to be a pheoid fungus which may cause the eventual lesions observed in pheo- and hyalohyphomycosis. Species of this genus have been described as opportunistic agents in humans and animals, mainly as a result of immunosuppression. In the present case, the patient had multiple myeloma and received an allogenic bone marrow transplant from his HLA-compatible brother. Two months after transplantation, he developed purplish and painful nodular lesions on the right ankle. Some of these lesions drained spontaneously and apparently hyaline mycelial filaments were observed, whose culture was initially identified as Acremonium sp. Subsequent studies showed that the fungus was Phialemonium curvatum. The infection was treated with amphotericin B, followed by ketoconazole. The patient was submitted to surgical debridement followed by two skin grafts to repair the bloody area. The duration of the treatment was 4 months and secondary prophylaxis with ketoconazole alone was maintained for one additional month. No recurrence was observed after discontinuation of treatment. The authors comment on the pathogenicity of the genus Phialemonium.

Os Autores registram o primeiro caso de dermatofitose por Trichophyton raubitschekii em paciente do Estado de São Paulo, com lesões de Tinea corporis localizada nas nádegas. O cultivo em ágar-Sabouraud com cicloheximida permitiu o isolamento e identificação do fungo, cujo diagnóstico foi confirmado pela Drª Lynne Sigler, da Universidade de Alberta, Canadá. O tratamento sistêmico com fluconazol, 150mg/semana por 4 semanas, associado ao tratamento tópico com isoconazol ofereceu inicialmente resultados favoráveis, com recidiva das lesões, após suspensão do medicamento. Trata-se do quinto caso publicado na literatura médica nacional.

The authors report the first case of dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton raubitschekii in a patient from the State of São Paulo with Tinea corporis lesions localized on the buttocks. Culture on Sabouraud-agar with cycloheximide permitted the isolation and identification of the fungus, and the diagnosis was confirmed by Dr. Lynne Sigler, University of Alberta, Canada. Systemic treatment with fluconazole, 150 mg/week for 4 weeks, in combination with topical treatment with isoconazole initially yielded favorable results, with recurrence of the lesions after the medication was discontinued. This is the fifth case of this dermatophytosis published in the Brazilian medical literature.

Os Autores registraram dois casos de onicomicose sob forma distrófica, sendo um em paciente HIV-positivo, provocados pelo Scytalidium dimidiatum, no passado considerado como Scytalidium lignicola. Fazem uma revisão da matéria sob o ponto de vista taxonômico, considerado o anamorfo Hendersonula toruloidea como sinônimo de Nattrassia mangiferae, tendo como sinanamorfo principal o Scytalidium dimidiatum. Scytalidium hyalinum seria para muitos micologistas espécie à parte ou mutante hialina do Scytalidium dimidiatum. Scytalidium lignicola Pesante 1957, foi considerada por ELLIS (1971)13 como espécie-tipo do gênero e mais tarde (1976)14, pelo mesmo Autor como "estado conidiano" de Hendersonula toruloidea, atualmente Nattrassia mangiferae. Vive somente em raízes de determinadas plantas (Pinus e Platamus, principalmente). Produz picnidios e até hoje não é considerado como agente patogênico, sem afastá-lo, todavia, como agente emergente, capaz de provocar lesões fúngicas oportunísticas. Salientam a importância do tema como um dos mais importantes na taxonomia fúngica, sujeita a tantas mudanças, bem como seu interesse, principalmente no campo da micologia dermatológica.

The authors report two cases of onychomycosis in the dystrophic form, one of them involving an HIV-positive patient, provoked by Scytalidium dimidiatum, previously called Scytalidium lignicola. The subject is reviewed from the taxonomic viewpoint, considering the anamorph Hendersonula toruloidea as a synonym of Nattrassia mangiferae, and having Scytalidium dimidiatum as the major synanamorph. According to many mycologists, Scytalidium hyalinum may be a separate species or a hyaline mutant of Scytalidium dimidiatum. Scytalidium lignicola Pesante 1957 was considered to be the type-species of the genus by ELLIS (1971)13 and later to be a "conidial state" of Hendersonula toruloidea by the same author, today known as Nattrassia mangiferae. The microorganism lives only on the roots of certain plants (mainly Platanus and Pinus). It produces pycnidia and is not considered to be a pathogen, although it is considered as a possible emerging agent capable of provoking opportunistic fungal lesions. The importance of this topic as one of the most outstanding in fungal taxonomy, so likely to be modified over time, as well as its interest in the field of dermatologic mycology, are emphasized.

O presente trabalho registra caso de histoplasmose em paciente de 5 anos, HIV negativo, natural e procedente da cidade de São Paulo, com lesões cutâneas não diagnosticadas clinicamente. Exame histopatológico negativo para infecção fúngica. Cultivos em duas ocasiões, positivos para Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum (amostras 361 e 387). Sorologia negativa para anticorpos anti-Histoplasma capsulatum e Paracoccidioides brasiliensis pelas provas de Imunodifusão dupla e Contraimunoeletroforese. Ensaio imunoenzimático pesquisando o antígeno polissacarídico específico, negativo. A obtenção do exoantígeno de uma das amostras permitiu, através de provas de Imunodifusão, com soro de coelho anti-Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum, detectar duas bandas de precipitação. Registre-se a negatividade da reação de Imunodifusão dupla do soro do paciente face ao exoantígeno produzido com a amostra dele isolada. Através da reação de Immunoblotting foi identificada uma fração com peso molecular de aproximadamente 94 kDa, além de outras. Os dois cultivos foram enviados ao Prof. Leo Kaufman, CDC, Atlanta, USA, o qual identificou as duas amostras como Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum, através de provas de Imunodifusão dupla com os respectivos exoantígenos e sonda específica do fungo (DNA-probe). As colorações específicas para fungos, nos tecidos, foram negativas, incluindo prova de Imunoperoxidase para Histoplasma capsulatum var.capsulatum, a negatividade das provas sorológicas para histoplasmose clássica e o próprio aspecto clínico das lesões cutâneas eritêmato-violáceas infiltradas, mostram que o caso em apreço é realmente inusitado, correspondendo o cultivo a uma "variante aberrante" do Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum. Face ao diagnóstico micológico de histoplasmose clássica, o paciente foi tratado com itraconazol 100 mg/dia, durante três meses, com regressão total das lesões.

A case of atypical disseminated cutaneous histoplasmosis in a five-year old, otherwise healthy child, native and resident in São Paulo metropolitan area is reported. Cutaneous lesions were clinically atypical. Histologic examination disclosed a granulomatous reaction but no fungal structures could be demonstrated by specific staining nor by immunohistochemical reaction. The fungus was isolated from biopsy material on two different occasions, confirming diagnosis of an unusual fungal infection. The fungus, originally thought to be a Sepedonium sp. due to the large sized, hyaline or brownish colored tuberculated macroconidia and to lack of dimorphism (yeast form at 37 °C) produce H and M antigens, visualized by the immunodiffusion with rabbit anti-Histoplasma capsulatum hyperimmune serum. Patient’s serum sample was non reactive with H. capsulatum antigen by immunodiffusion, counterimmunoelectrophoresis and complement fixation tests, and immunoenzymatic assay failed to detect the specific circulating antigen. This serum was tested negative by double immunodiffusion when antigen obtained from one of the isolated samples was used. Both cultures were sent to Dr. Leo Kaufman, Ph.D. (Mycoses Immunodiagnostic Laboratory, CDC-Atlanta/USA), who identified them as H. capsulatum by the exoantigen and gen-probe tests. Both clinic and mycologic characteristics of the present case were atypical, suggesting the fungus isolated is an “aberrant variant” of H. capsulatum var. capsulatum, as described by SUTTON et al. in 199719. Treatment with itraconazole 100 mg/day led to cure within 90 days

Os Autores estudaram do ponto de vista micológico, imunoquímico e de sua biologia molecular, duas amostras de Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, uma isolada do solo, no município de IBIÁ (MG) por Silva-Vergara et al. (l996,1998)20,21 denominada IBIÁ e outra, BAT, cultivada de um caso humano de paracoccidioidomicose em Ribeirão Preto (SP) por Freitas da Silva (l996)6. Tais amostras apresentam colônias cotonosa (M) e leveduriforme (L ou Y), sendo patogênicas para cobaios inoculados por via testicular, produzindo orquite granulomatosa e/ou supurativa. Do ponto de vista imunoquímico, através de provas de Imunodifusão dupla, Imunoeletroforese e Western Blotting, foi demonstrada a presença da gp43. A sequência de nucleotídeos do DNA de tais amostras, através do seqüenciamento de 761 bases, revelou homologia de 100% com amostra padrão de P. brasiliensis, o mesmo ocorrendo com três amostras humanas, uma isolada de fezes de pinguim e outra de ração alimentar para cães contaminada com terra. São discutidos vários aspectos dos resultados obtidos, comparando-os com alguns dados da literatura.

The authors conducted a mycologic, immunochemical and molecular biology study on two strains of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, one of them, called IBIÁ, isolated from soil in the municipality of IBIÁ (Minas Gerais) by Silva-Vergara et al. (l996,1998)20,21, and the other, BAT, cultivated from a human case of paracoccidioidomycosis in Ribeirão Preto (São Paulo/Brazil) by Freitas da Silva (l996)6. Both strains showed cotton-like (M) and yeast-like (Y) forms and were pathogenic for testicularly inoculated guinea pigs, producing granulomatous and/or suppurative orchitis. Immunochemically was demonstrated the presence of gp43 by double immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis and immunoblotting.

Coccidioidomicose é infecção endêmica com distribuição geográfica relativamente limitada: México, Guatemala, Honduras, Colômbia, Venezuela, Bolívia, Paraguai, Argentina e Sudeste dos Estados Unidos. Nestes países, a área endêmica está restrita à regiões desérticas ou semiáridas, semelhante as do Nordeste do Brasil. Registro do caso: paciente masculino de 32 anos, nascido no Estado da Bahia (Nordeste do Estado), vivendo há seis anos em São Paulo (Sudeste). Foi admitido no Departamento de Pneumologia do Hospital das Clínicas em outubro de 1996, com história de tosse produtiva e progressiva há seis meses, febre, mal estar, calafrios, perda de peso, fraqueza e artralgia das pequenas articulações. Raio X e tomografia computadorizada revelou infiltrado retículo-nodular intersticial com cavidade no lóbulo superior direito. O exame direto do escarro e lavado broncoalveolar com hidróxido de potássio, demonstrou características esférulas de parede espessa em vários estágios de desenvolvimento. Sabouraud dextrose-ágar, à 25° C e 30° C permitiu crescimento de colônia branca, cotonosa. A micromorfologia apresentou hifas ramificadas de parede espessa, artroconídios em formas de barril alternadas com células vazias. A prova de imunodifusão positiva e o teste de fixação de complemento positivo para 1:128 confirmaram o diagnóstico. O paciente está sendo tratado com ketoconazol e apresenta melhora clínica e radiológica

Coccidioidomycosis is an endemic infection with a relatively limited geographic distribution: Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Paraguai, Argentina and the southwest of the United States. In these countries, the endemic area is restricted to the semiarid desert like regions which are similar to the northeast of Brazil. Case report: The patient is a 32 year-old male, born in the state of Bahia (Northeast of Brazil) and has been living in São Paulo (Southeast) for 6 years. He was admitted at Hospital das Clínicas, at the Department of Pneumology in October 1996, with a 6 month history of progressive and productive cough, fever, malaise, chills, loss of weight, weakness and arthralgia in the small joints. Chest x-rays and computerized tomography disclosed an interstitial reticulonodular infiltrate with a cavity in the right upper lobe. The standard potassium hydroxide preparation of sputum and broncoalveolar lavage demonstrated the characteristic thickened wall spherules in various stages of development. Sabouraud dextrose agar, at 25° C and 30° C showed growth of white and cottony aerial micelium. The microscopic morphology disclosed branched hyphae characterized by thick walled, barrel shaped arthroconidia alternated with empty cells. The sorological studies with positive double immunodiffusion test, and also positive complement fixation test in 1/128 dilution confirmed the diagnosis. The patient has been treated with ketoconazole and presents a favorable clinical and radiological evolution

O presente trabalho registra um caso de feo-hifomicose subcutânea em paciente do sexo masculino com o diagnóstico de sarcoidose pulmonar, submetido à terapêutica por corticosteróides quando apresentou no dorso da mão direita lesões cutâneas nodulares, eritêmato-violáceas, de aspecto infiltrado, exigindo biópsia para o diagnóstico. O exame histopatológico revelou processo granulomatoso, com a presença de hifas e células arredondadas demácias. Cultivo positivo para fungo identificado com Phoma cava. Os Autores fizeram revisão da literatura sobre as infecções fúngicas provocadas por diversas espécies de Phoma, mostrando a raridade desta observação. A evolução foi favorável com a administração da anfotericina B (via venosa) seguida do itraconazol (via oral)

We report a case of subcutaneous pheohyphomycosis observed in a male patient presenting pulmonary sarcoidosis and submitted to corticosteroid treatment. He presented nodular erythematous-violaceous skin lesions in the dorsum of the right hand. Histopathological examination of the biopsied lesion revealed dematiaceous hyphae and yeast-like cells, with a granulomatous tissual reaction. The isolated fungus was identified as Phoma cava. A review of the literature on fungal infection caused by different Phoma species, is presented. The patient healed after therapy with amphotericin B, followed by itraconazole

As basidiomicoses, infecções fúngicas provocadas por basidiomicetos ou agáricos vêm sendo registradas cada vez com maior frequência na literatura médica, principalmente após o advento da AIDS/SIDA, em 1981. Os basidiosporos desses fungos, espalhados na atmosfera e veiculados através do vento ou de correntes aéreas, atingem por via nasal os seios maxilares, provocando quadros de sinusite crônica, na maioria das vezes. Do escarro também têm sido isolados basidiomicetos, principalmente o Schizophyllum commune. Lesões da mucosa da boca, abscessos cerebrais, onicomicoses e endocardites já foram descritas, aumentando o interesse dos micologistas e infectologistas para este tipo de micose profunda. O presente trabalho assinala, ao lado dos quadros dc micetismo, processos infecciosos provocados por basidiomicetos, a exemplo do Schizophyllum commune, Ustilago maydis (= Ustilago zeae) e Coprinus cinereus.

The basidiomycosis, fungal infections provoked by basidiomycetes or agaric fungi have been recorded at growing frequencies in the medical literature, especially after the advent of AIDS in 1991. The basidiospores of these fungi, scattered in the atmosphere and transported by winds or air currents, reach the maxillary sinuses through the nasal route, most of the times causing signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis. Basidiomycetes have also been isolated from sputum, especially Schizophyllum commune. Lesions of the buccal mucosa, brain abscesses, onychomycosis and endocarditis have been described, with a growing interest in this type of deep mycosis on the part of mycologists and infectologists. The present paper reports descriptions of mycetism as well as infectious processes caused by basidiomycetes, such as Schizophyllum commune, Ustilago maydis (= Ustilago zeae) and Coprinus cinereus

Os autores registram caso de hialo-hifomicose subcutânea por Acremonium recifei em paciente branca, imunocompetente, natural da Bahia, com história de traumatismo no dorso da mão direita. A lesão era indolor, com edema, inflamação, presença de fístulas, secreção seropurulenta, e ausência de grãos. O exame histopatológico mostrou hifas septadas hialinas pela hematoxilina-eosina. Cultura positiva para Acremonium recifei, espécie identificada em 1934, pela primeira vez, por Arêa Leão & Lobo, com o nome de Cephalosporium recifei, de um caso de eumicetoma podai por grãos branco-amarelados. Tratamento com itraconazol, 200 mg ao dia, com evolução favorável e cura do processo. No Brasil, trata-se do primeiro registro de hialohifomicose provocado por esta espécie, cujo habitat deve ser o solo.

We present a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei, a species whose habitat is probably the soil, first identified in 1934 by Arêa Leão and Lobo in a case of podal eumycetoma with white-yellowish grains and initially named Cephalosporium recifei. A white immunocompetent female patient from the state of Bahia, Brazil, with a history of traumatic injury to the right hand is reported. The lesion was painless, with edema, inflammation and the presence of fistulae. Seropurulent secretion with the absence of grains was present. Histopathological examination of material stained with hematoxylin-eosin showed hyaline septate hyphae. A culture was positive for Acremonium recifei. Treatment with itraconazole, 200 mg/day, for two months led to a favorable course and cure of the process. We report for the first time in the literature a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei in a immunocompetent woman. Treatment with itraconazole 200 mg/day, for two months, resulted in cure.

No presente trabalho são registrados dois casos de aspergilose em crianças imunocomprometidas. O estudo micológico completo identificou Aspergillus flavus como agente dos dois processos. A presença cada vez mais frequente da aspergilose invasiva deve-se ao número crescente de pacientes imunocomprometidos, muitos com hemopatias graves submetidos à quimioterapia. O diagnóstico precoce em um dos casos possibilitou remissão do processo. Tratava-se de paciente com leucemia mielóide aguda, tendo sido isolado o fungo do sangue circulante. O segundo caso evoluiu para óbito, com infecção fúngica generalizada.

Two cases of Aspergillosis in immunocompromised children are reported. Both were caused by Aspergillns flavus. Early diagnosis and treatment led to the remission of the process. One patient had acute myeloid leukemia; the fungus was isolated from the blood. The other patient with bone marrow aplasia, presented an invasive aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses with dissemination of fungal infection; the diagnosis was obtained by histology and culture of biopsied tissue from a palatal ulceration.

São registrados três casos de feo-hifornicose subcutânea em transplantados renais provocados pela Exophiala jeanselmei (Langeron) McGinnis et Padhye 1977, fungo demácio capaz, também, de produzir raramente eumicetoma de grãos pretos. Este fungo, segundo KWON-CHUNG & BENNETT, 1992(27) é antigenicamente muito heterogêneo, sendo identificados até o presente momento três sorotipos com subgrupos dentro de cada um deles. A feo-hifomicose subcutânea vem se tornando cada vez mais freqüente em transplantados renais, submetidos a terapêutica imunodepressora. Como a Exophiala jeanselmei já foi isolada do meio ambiente, torna-se dificil explicar a patogenia desses casos por um despertar ou reativação de processos quiescentes. Os Autores fizeram ampla revisão da literatura, registrando principalmente os casos de feo-hifomicose publicados no Brasil. Sugerem também, eventual ação fungistática da ciclosporina A sobre a Exophiala jeanselmei.

We report three cases of subcutaneous phaeohy-phomycosis due to Exophiala jeanselmei (Langeron) McGinnis et Padhye 1977, in kidney transplant patients. Exophiala jeanselmei is a dematious fungus having also ability to rarely procedure eumycetoma (black grains). According to KWON-CHUNG & BENNETT (1992)27 such fungus is antigenically very heterogeneous, since so far three serotypes have been identified; each serotype including subgroups. Subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis is becoming more and more frequent in kidney transplant patients submitted to an immunosupressive treatment. As Exophiala jeanselmei has already been isolated from the environment it becomes difficult to explain the pathogenicity of these cases by a reactivation of quiescent processes. The authors suggest an occasional fungistatic action of cyclosporine A upon Exophiala jeanselmei. A review of the literature was carried out with the report mainly of cases published in Brazil.

O presente trabalho, além da revisão da literatura sobre quimiotipagem do C. neoformans, com novos dados sobre a epidemiologia da criptococose, teve por finalidade principal a caracterização das duas variedades desta levedura em pacientes com neurocriptococose, HIV + e HIV -. As variedades neoformans e gattii estão hoje bem definidas bioquimicamente, com o emprego do meio C.G.B., proposto por KWON-CHUNG et al. (1982) 24. O isolamento do C. neoformans var. gattii das flores e folhas do Eucalyptus camaldulensis e do Eucalyptus tereticornis, na Austrália, através dos trabalhos de ELLIS & PFEIFFER (1990)16 e PFEIFFER & ELLIS (1992)41, possibilitou investigações epidemiológicas das mais interessantes sobre este microrganismo, levedura capsulada a qual SANFELICE50, 51, na Itália, em 1894 e 1895 despertou a atenção do meio médico. BUSSE8, em 1894, descrevia o primeiro caso de criptococose humana sob a forma de lesão óssea, simulando sarcoma. As pesquisas nacionais sobre o assunto em foco foram destacadas, seguindo-se a experiência dos Autores com o meio de C.G.B. (L - canavanina, glicina e azul de bromotimol). Foi possível, através deste meio o estudo de 50 amostras de líquor, sendo 39 procedentes de aidéticos (78%) e 11 de não aidéticos (22%). De pacientes HIV+, 37 (74%) foram identificados como C. neoformans var. neoformans e 2 (4%) como C. neoformans var. gattii. Dos HIV- 8 ( 16%) foram classificados como C. neoformans var. neoformans e 3 (6%) como C. neoformans var. gattii. Através deste trabalho, evidencia-se a importância da neurocriptococose, principalmente entre os aidéticos, demonstrando-se mais uma vez o interesse do meio CGB na quimiotipagem do C. neoformans em suas duas variedades, ganhando em importância a demonstração de que duas espécies de eucalipto podem funcionar como "árvores-hospedeiras" para o Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii.

The purpose of this work was to collect the main information from the literature about the biotyping of Cryptococcus neoformans. The more up-to date research concerning the epidemiology of cryptococcosis comprising quite a few articles, mainly after the advent of AIDS, was also reviewed. The Cryptococcus neoformans varieties neoformans and gattii are well defined biochemically nowadays chiefly through the C.G.B. medium, according to KWON-CHUNG et al. (1982)24. The isolation of C. neoformans var. gattii from flowers and leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Eucalyptus tereticornis, specially in Australia, through the works of ELLIS & PFEIFFER (1990) 16 and PFEIFFER & ELLIS (1992) 41 permitted very interesting epidemiological investigations on C. neoformans, a capsulaled yeast by which SANFELICE 50, 51, in Italy (1894; 1895) attracted attention of medical class. BUSSE 8, in 1894, described the first human case of cryptococcosis under the presentation of a bone lesion simulating sarcoma. In this paper, the Brazilian researchers focused on this subject were pointed out, followed by the Author's experience with the C.G.B medium (L - canavanine, glycin and bromothymol blue) proposed by KWON-CHUNG et al. (1982) 24 with very good results. It was possible with such medium the study of 50 C.N.S. liquor samples, being 39 from AIDS patients (78%) and 11 from non-AIDS ones (22%). Thirty-seven out of the 39 HIV- positive patients (74%) were identified as C. neoformans var. neoformans and 2 (4%) as C. neoformans var. gattii. From the negative HIV, 8 (16%) were classified as C. neoformans var. neoformans and 3 (6%) as C. neoformans var. gattii. We could not perform the serotyping of the above referred samples. It is evident anyway that in Brazil there exist both varieties gattii and neoformans, agents of neurocryptococcosis, including AIDS patients. The importance of neurocryptococcosis, mainly among AIDS patients, is stressed here, showing once more the value of C.G.B. medium in the typing of C. neoformans in its two varieties. Also, it is of relevant importance the demonstration that some species of eucalyptus may act as "host-trees" of C. neoformans var. gattii.
