Este trabalho apesenta alguns aspectos da difração no olho humano, tanto na pupila como nas células do cristalino e em estruturas no seu interior. As deduções relevantes são feitas em um Apêndice. Para complementar o entendimento dos fenômenos ópticos, são examinados alguns aspectos fisiológicos do olho, especialmente da retina. O objetivo do trabalho é fornecer exemplos que possam ajudar no ensino da óptica e motivar os estudantes a examinarem mais detalhadamente a difração, incluindo cálculos numéricos. This work presents some aspects of diffraction in the human eye, which occurs in the pupil, in the cells of the lens, and in structures within it. An Appendix presents the calculations necessary to understand the phenomenon of diffraction. To complement the understanding of optical phenomena, some physiological aspects of the eye, especially the retina, are examined. The purpose of the paper is to provide teachers and students with examples that can help in the study of optics and motivate students to take a closer look at diffraction, including numerical calculations. Examples include the visibility of structures like the Great Wall of China when viewed from long distances, the dots of the letters i and j from the drug information leaflet the shape of floaters, and why we see stars as pointy objects. Neste trabalho estudamos a dificuldade de predizer a evolução temporal de um fenômeno, como uma pandemia ou uma epidemia, quando os dados são afetados por flutuações estatísticas, mesmo que conheçamos a função que rege tal evolução. As flutuações iniciais no processo provocam grandes incertezas dos parâmetros ajustados e na função extrapolada e, consequentemente, na previsão quantitativa da evolução de uma epidemia. Além das flutuações estatísticas, as covariâncias dos parâmetros ajustados contribuem para as incertezas e dúvidas sobre a evolução do fenômeno estudado. O problema é introduzido usando um fenômeno familiar aos estudantes de física.

In this work, we study the difficulty of predicting the time evolution of a phenomenon, as a pandemic or an epidemic, when the data are affected by statistical fluctuation, even if we know the function governing the evolution of that phenomenon. The initial fluctuations in the process imply great uncertainties of the fitted parameters and in the extrapolated function and, consequently, in the quantitative forecast of the evolution of the pandemic. Besides the statistical fluctuations, covariances of the adjusted parameters contribute to the uncertainties and doubts about the evolution of the studied phenomenon. The discussed problem is introduced using a phenomenon familiar to physics students.

RESUMO Este artigo investiga a relação entre educação e desigualdade na distribuição de renda usando dados de 5.565 cidades brasileiras. Foi construído um índice educacional geral composto por 24 indicadores básicos. A desigualdade na distribuição de renda foi representada pelo índice de Gini. A análise foi controlada pela renda média domiciliar per capita. Os resultados mostraram que o indicador educacional melhora com um aumento da renda, e piora com um aumento da desigualdade. Uma redução de 0,1 unidade no índice de Gini é equivalente a um aumento de 17% na renda média domiciliar.

ABSTRACT This paper investigates the relationship between education and income inequality using data from 5,565 Brazilian cities. An education composite index combining 24 key indicators was constructed and calculated for each city. Income inequality was measured by the Gini index. The analysis was controlled for mean per capita household income. The results have shown that the education index increases with increasing income, but decreases with increasing inequality. Reduction of 0.1 in the Gini index is equivalent to increasing income by 17%.

RESUMEN Este trabajo investiga la relación entre educación y desigualdad en la distribución del ingreso utilizando datos de 5.565 ciudades brasileñas. Se construyó un índice educativo general compuesto por 24 indicadores básicos. La desigualdad en la distribución del ingreso estuvo representada por el índice de Gini. El análisis fue controlado por el ingreso familiar promedio per cápita. Los resultados mostraron que el indicador educativo mejora con el aumento del ingreso y empeora con el aumento de la desigualdad. Una reducción de 0,1 unidades en el índice de Gini equivale a un aumento del 17% en el ingreso familiar promedio.

Este trabalho apresenta um modelo de olho humano de simples construção para ser usado no ensino da técnica de oftalmoscopia direta para estudantes de medicina. O modelo facilita o aprendizado e contribui para a formação de médicos adequadamente preparados para diagnosticar problemas que podem levar à cegueira, permitindo o rápido encaminhamento dos pacientes para os serviços especializados. Discutimos aqui alguns aspectos básicos da óptica do olho humano e do oftalmoscópio direto, bem como do seu uso.

This paper presents a simple construction model of the human eye to be used to teach the technique of direct ophthalmoscopy to medical students. The model facilitates the learning process and contributes to the training of physicians adequately prepared to diagnose problems that can lead to blindness, allowing rapid referral of patients to specialized services. Here we discuss some basic aspects of the human eye optics and direct ophthalmoscope as well as its use.

Este trabalho apresenta dois procedimentos para calcular o número de anos de escolaridade fornecidos pelo sistema educacional brasileiro. Um dos procedimentos é baseado nas taxas de conclusão dos ensinos fundamental, médio e superior. Tal procedimento, que depende do conhecimento da população nas várias faixas etárias e do número de concluintes de cada um dos níveis educacionais, foi utilizado para as estimativas no período posterior a 1962. O outro procedimento é baseado no número de anos de estudo declarado pela população adulta, tal como divulgado pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), e foi utilizado para estimar o número de anos fornecidos pelo sistema educacional em períodos mais remotos. O bom acordo entre os resultados obtidos com os dois métodos no período entre 1962 e 1999 demonstra que eles são consistentes. A combinação dos dois procedimentos fornece resultados para um período de cerca de 90 anos, iniciando-se em meados da década de 1920. As incertezas dos resultados, estimadas a partir tanto das flutuações dos dados utilizados, quanto das aproximações numéricas que foram feitas, são da ordem de 3%. Alguns detalhes dos cálculos são apresentados ao final, nos apêndices. As variações no número de anos de escolaridade, quando maiores do que as incertezas estimadas, estão associadas a eventos políticos, sociais ou educacionais que marcaram o período analisado.

This work presents two procedures to calculate the number of years of schooling afforded by the Brazilian education system. One of the procedures is based on the rates of completion at fundamental, secondary and higher education. This procedure, which relies on knowledge of the population distribution across several age groups and on the number of graduates at each education level, was used in the estimates related to the period before 1962. The other procedure is based on the number of years of schooling declared by the adult population, made available by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and was employed to estimate the number of years of schooling achieved by the education system in earlier periods. The good agreement between the results obtained with the two methods for the period between 1962 and 1999 demonstrates that they are consistent. The combination of the two procedures can give the results for a period of around 90 years, starting in the mid-1920s. The uncertainties of the results estimated both from fluctuations in the data used and from the numerical approximations made, are around 3%. Some of the details of the calculations are presented at the end of the work, in appendixes. The variations in the number of years of schooling, when larger than the uncertainties estimated, are associated to political, social or educational events that characterize the historical period analyzed.

Este trabalho descreve alguns aspectos da óptica do olho humano adotando uma abordagem progressiva. Iniciaremos estudando um sistema visual muito simples e iremos incluindo os vários ingredientes que compõem o olho humano. Inicialmente, o olho humano é aproximado apenas por uma esfera oca, na qual a luz penetra por um pequeno orifício e incide na superfície oposta a ele, onde está a retina. Entretanto, esse sistema simples não permite a formação de uma imagem nítida na retina. Para melhorar a qualidade da imagem, a esfera oca é então preenchida por um material com índice de refração igual ao das substâncias que preenchem o olho humano (humores aquoso e vítreo). A imagem formada na retina fica mais definida, mas não ainda completamente nítida. A seguir, nós estudamos o papel da córnea na melhora da imagem. Mas a córnea do olho humano ainda não garante a formação de imagens nítidas. Assim, o próximo passo é estudar o papel da lente interna (cristalino). Essa sequência, de um sistema visual muito simples até um completo olho humano, segue, aproximadamente, o caminho que se supõe tenha sido seguido pelo processo de evolu¸ao do olho ao longo dos ultimos 500 milhões de anos. As deduções necessárias são feitas usando-se as equações básicas da óptica geométrica. Finalmente, é apresentado um modelo construído com uma esfera transparente que permite ilustrar vários aspectos da óptica da visão humana.

This paper describes some aspects of the human eye adopting a progressive approach. We begin studying a simple visual system to which we progressively include the other eye components. Initially, the human eye is represented by a simple void sphere with a hole through which the light passes and strikes the opposite surface where is the retina. However, this simple model does not produce a sharp image on the retina. In order to improve the image quality, the sphere is filled with a material with a refractive index equal to that of the substances that fill the eye (vitreous and aqueous humors). The image formed in the retina becomes less blurred, but not completely sharp. After that, we study the role of the cornea to the improvement of the image quality. But the cornea does not ensure a perfect image. The next step is to study the role of the lens. The adopted approach is more or less similar to the evolutionary history of the eye during the last 500 million years, from a simple photosensitive sheet to the complex vertebrate eyes. Calculations are performed using the basic equations of the geometric optics. Finally, we present a model of the human eye made with transparent spheres which allows us to explore some aspects of the human vision.
