Abstract Stinking passionflower (Passiflora foetida L.) is a medicinal species that may be used as rootstock to sour passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) against wilting and collar rot caused by Fusarium spp. However, as it is a host of the reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis), the cultivation of this species may be constrained in crop fields infested by this nematode. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of R. reniformis on the growth of stinking passion flower. The length of plants inoculated with the highest dose of each trial (152,900 and 78,900 specimens per plant corresponding to 402.4 and 207.6 specimens / cm3 of soil) was shorter than in plants not inoculated with the reniform nematode. Therefore, R. reniformis should be considered a pathogen of stinking passionflower and be properly managed.

Resumo O maracujá-de-cheiro (Passiflora foetida L.) é uma espécie medicinal que pode ser utilizada como porta-enxerto para o maracujá-azedo (Passiflora edulis) contra a murcha e a podridão de colo e raiz causadas por Fusarium spp. No entanto, por ser uma planta hospedeira do nematoide-reniforme (Rotylenchulus reniformis), o cultivo desta espécie pode ser restringido em campos infestados por este nematoide. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de R. reniformis no crescimento do maracujá-de-cheiro. O comprimento de plantas inoculadas com a dose mais alta de cada ensaio (152.900 e 78.900 espécimes por planta, correspondendo a 402,4 e 207,6 espécimes / cm3 de solo) foi menor do que em plantas não inoculadas com o nematoide-reniforme. Portanto, R. reniformis deve ser considerado um patógeno de maracujá-de-cheiro e ser adequadamente manejado.

Resumo Em julho de 2020, durante visita em área de pequeno produtor localizada em Laranjal Paulista, São Paulo (Brasil), foram observadas mais de 20 plantas de pitaia-branca [Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton e Rose (syn. Selenicereus undatus (Haw.) D.R. Hunt]apresentando enfezamento e cladódios cloróticos, com porções do caule em declínio. As raízes exibiam numerosas galhas, indicando típica infecção por Meloidogyne sp.. Nematoides foram recuperados de amostras de solo (200 cm³) e 7 g de raiz: 1,7 juvenis (J2) por cm³ de solo, e 954 ovos + J2 de Meloidogyne por grama de raiz foram obtidos. O padrão perineal de 10 fêmeas apontou para . M. incognitaAdicionalmente, o fenótipo de esterase foi obtido por meio de eletroforese de isoenzima. Essa foi realizada com 10 fêmeas adicionais, confirmando a identificação por M. incognita. Ao nosso conhecimento, este é o primeiro relato de M. incognita infestando plantas de pitaia (Hylocereus spp.). e, baseado em nossa observação em campo, M. incognita pode ser um patógeno potencial a esta cultura.

Abstract In July 2020, during a survey carried out in a small farm located in Laranjal Paulista, state of São Paulo (Brazil), more than 20 white pitahaya plants [Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton and Rose (syn. Selenicereus undatus (Haw.) D.R. Hunt] were found with stunting symptoms and showing chlorotic-yellowish stems, some of them already decaying. Roots exhibited numerous galls, indicating Meloidogyne sp. infection. Nematodes were recovered from 200 cm³ and 7 g of roots: 1.7 Meloidogyne juveniles (J2) per cm³ of soil and 954 eggs + J2 per g of roots were found. The perineal pattern of 10 females pointed to M. incognita. Additionally, esterase phenotype was obtained through isozyme electrophoresis, using another 10 females, which identified M. incognita. To our knowledge, this is the first report of M. incognita infesting pitahaya plants (Hylocereus spp.) and, based on our results, M. incognita could be a potential threat to the crop.

Resumo A produção do maracujazeiro (Passiflora spp.) é limitada por vários fatores, incluindo patógenos de solo, como Rotylenchulus reniformis (nematoide-reniforme) e Meloidogyne incognita (nematoide-das-galhas). Entender o comportamento de diferentes cultivares, pertencentes às diferentes espécies de maracujazeiro, é de fundamental importância, especialmente quando se buscam fontes de resistência para o manejo efetivo de fitonematoides. Dois ensaios foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação para avaliar a resistência/suscetibilidade de diferentes espécies de maracujazeiro a R. reniformis e M. incognita. Para R. reniformis, foram testadas cultivares pertencentes a duas espécies: Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa (‘BRS Sol do Cerrado’, ‘BRS Rubi do Cerrado’ e ‘BRS Gigante Amarelo’) e P. cincinnata (‘BRS Sertão Forte’). Quanto a M. incognita, foram testadas todas as cultivares acima, além da espécie P. setacea (‘BRS Pérola do Cerrado’). Os resultados mostraram que todas as cultivares de maracujazeiro testadas foram suscetíveis ao nematoide-reniforme. Por outro lado, todas as cultivares testadas foram imunes ao nematoide-das-galhas, apesar de apresentarem galhas nas raízes. Portanto, ressalta-se a relevância do nematoide reniforme para a cultura do maracujazeiro.

Abstract Passion fruit (Passiflora spp.) yield is limited by several factors, including soil pathogens, such as Rotylenchulus reniformis (the reniform nematode) and Meloidogyne incognita (the Southern root-knot nematode). Understanding the behavior of different cultivars, within different species of passion fruit could be important asset to the search for sources of resistance, and therefore for the effective management of phytonematodes. Three trials were carried out in greenhouse to evaluate the resistance/susceptibility of different passion fruit species to R. reniformis and M. incognita. For R. reniformis, cultivars from two species were tested: Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa (‘BRS Sol do Cerrado’, ‘BRS Rubi do Cerrado’ and ‘BRS Gigante Amarelo’) and Passiflora cincinnata (‘BRS Sertão Forte’). Regarding M. incognita, all the cultivars above were evaluated, with the addition of Passiflora setacea (‘BRS Pérola do Cerrado’). The results showed that all tested cultivars were susceptible to the reniform nematode. Conversely, all tested cultivars were immune to root-knot nematode, although exhibiting root galling. Therefore, it is emphasizes the relevance of reniform nematode to passion fruit crops.

Resumo O maracujá-de-cheiro (Passiflora foetida L.) é uma trepadeira herbácea com propriedades medicinais. Pode ser uma opção a ser utilizada como porta-enxerto para o maracujazeiro-azedo (P. edulis Sims). O interesse foi especialmente motivado pela sua resistência a Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae e F. solani, dois fitopatógenos de solo que limitam severamente o cultivo do maracujazeiro-azedo no Brasil. Os fitonematoides são outros importantes patógenos de solo para a maioria das culturas, incluindo espécies de Passiflora, e muitas vezes interagem sinergicamente com isolados patogênicos de Fusarium spp.Entretanto, a reação de P. foetida aos nematoides fitoparasitas ainda não foi avaliada. Dessa forma, três experimentos em vasos foram realizados em casa de vegetação, com o objetivo de avaliar a reprodução de Rotylenchulus reniformis, Meloidogyne javanica e Pratylenchus brachyurus em maracujazeiro-de-cheiro e maracujazeiro-azedo. Tanto P. foetida quanto P. edulis foram suscetíveis a R. reniformis, mas imunes (ou altamente resistentes) a M. javanica e P. brachyurus. Com base em trabalhos anteriores e no presente, R. reniformis se destaca e pode ser apontada como a espécie mais importante para as espécies de Passiflora.

Abstract Stinking passion flower (Passiflora foetida L.) is an herbaceous vine used due its medicinal properties. It could be an option to be used as a rootstock for sour passion fruit (P. edulis). This interest was especially motivated by its resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passifloraeand F. solani, two soilborne pathogens that severely limit the sour passion fruit cultivation in Brazil. Phytonematodes are other important soil pathogens to most crops, including Passiflora species, and they often interact synergistically with pathogenic Fusarium spp. strains. However, the host status of stinking passion flower to phytonematodes was not assessed yet. Therefore, three pot experiments were carried out in order to assess the reproduction of Rotylenchulus reniformis, Meloidogyne javanica and on Pratylenchus brachyurusstinking passion flower and sour passion fruit. Both P. foetida and P. edulis were susceptible to R. reniformis, but immune (or highly resistant) to both M. javanica and P. brachyurus. Based on previous and the present work, R. reniformis stands out and could be pointed as the most important species to species of Passiflora.

ABSTRACT Phytonematodes are among the main pathogens of the common bean. In general, control practices that aim to control these pathogens have not been regularly adopted in Brazil. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the occurrence of phytonematodes in dry bean fields in Paraná and São Paulo states and estimate the pathogenicity of Pratylenchus brachyurus to dry bean in glasshouse experiments. Root and soil were sampled for nematode extraction, identification and estimation of population density. Four glasshouse experiments with different initial population densities were carried out to evaluate the effect of P. brachyurus on the growth of dry bean plants. Six species of phytonematodes were detected, namely Helicotylenchus dihystera, P. brachyurus, Pratylenchus crenatus, Meloidogyne javanica, Meloidogyne incognita and Rotylenchulus sp. The spiral nematode H. dihystera was found in all samples and was the most abundant species in both states. The lesion nematode P. brachyurus was also frequent, reaching 94% in Paraná and 100% in São Paulo. The root-knot nematodes and Rotylenchulus sp. were reported only in São Paulo fields (45% and 18% frequency, respectively), and P. crenatus only in Paraná (12%). The most abundant nematode in the soil was H. dihystera, and in roots was P. crenatus. It was demonstrated that densities of 6.66 specimens of P. brachyurus per cm3 of soil provoke visible and measurable root decay. In conclusion, survey data showed low phytonematode densities and pathogenicity tests demonstrated that densities above 6.67 specimens of P. brachyurus per cm3 of soil cause damage to the dry bean roots.

ABSTRACT Plant parasitic nematodes are major threats to Brazilian and world agriculture. Among them, Pratylenchus brachyurus and Meloidogyne incognita stand out as major pests for several crops, including corn, cotton, soybean among others, which can be components of integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems (ICLFs). In this context, information about the host status of eucalypts (Corymbia spp. and Eucalyptus spp.) to plant parasitic nematodes becomes more relevant in Brazil, due to the use of eucalypts in ICLFs. If tree components used on this system increase the population density of P. brachyurus and M. incognita, it is possible that these pathogens could damage shorter-cycle crops. Since information about the host status of eucalypts to plant parasitic nematodes is scarce, this study evaluated the host status of some eucalypt species to P. brachyurus and M. incognita. Two greenhouse trials were done to evaluate the reproduction of P. brachyurus and one to M. incognita, using some of the most cultivated species and hybrids of eucalypts in Brazil. The population growth of P. brachyurus increased on Corymbia citriodora, Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus dunnii × Eucalyptus urophylla, and E. grandis × E. urophylla after ~90 days of inoculation. Conversely, despite M. incognita reproducing well in the control plants, no individuals were recovered from C. citriodora, E. urophylla and E. grandis × E. urophylla, which were classified as resistant plants. Based on both obtained and available data, M. incognita poses no threat to eucalypt species today. However, P. brachyurus is suggested to be a threat to eucalypts.

Resumo O nematoide reniforme (Rotylenchulus reniformis) é uma das principais pragas do maracujá-azedo (Passiflora edulis), e há poucos métodos de manejo, pois não há fontes de resistência. Outras espécies de maracujá estão disponíveis comercialmente no Brasil e poderiam ser fontes de resistência. Cultivares de três espécies (P. setacea ‘BRS-Pérola-do-Cerrado’, P.cincinnata ‘BRS-Sertão-Forte’ e P.alata ‘BRS-Mel-do-Cerrado’) e uma cultivar suscetível (P.edulis ‘BRSGigante- Amarelo) foram avaliadas quanto à suscetibilidade ao nematoide reniforme, em dois experimentos conduzidos em casa de vegetação. Os resultados mostraram que as cultivares de maracujá testadas são suscetíveis a R. reniformis; portanto, a base para o manejo do nematoide reniforme em maracujá deve ser a combinação do uso de mudas sadias e campos livres dos nematoides.

Abstract Reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) is a major pest of sour-passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) in Brazil, and few management methods are currently available, mainly due to the lack of host-plant resistance. Other species of passion fruit species are also commercially available in Brazil, which could be a source of resistance. Cultivars of three species (P. setacea ‘BRS-Pérola-do-Cerrado’, P. cincinnata ‘BRS-Sertão-Forte’, and P. alata ‘BRS-Mel-do-Cerrado’), and one susceptible cultivar (P. edulis BRS-Gigante-Amarelo) were evaluated for reniform nematode susceptibility in two greenhouse trials. Results showed that the cultivars were susceptible. Therefore, reniform nematode management in passion fruit must be rely on a combination of nematode-free seedlings and nematode-free fields.

RESUMO: Atualmente, o nematoide das lesões radiculares Pratylenchus brachyurus Godfrey é um dos principais patógenos para a soja no Brasil, principalmente em áreas com sucessão de milho ou algodão, que também são suscetíveis a P. brachyurus. Grandes esforços têm sido feitos a fim de encontrar uma cultura rentável que possa ser utilizada no manejo de P. brachyurus. O sorgo granífero (Sorghum bicolor L.) é relatado como resistente a P. brachyurus, porém com base em apenas um ensaio. Adicionalmente, o capim-sudão (S. bicolor var. sudanense) não é diretamente rentável, mas é apreciado pelos agricultores brasileiros por produzir pasto, material verde picado, silagem ou feno, mesmo sob condições hídricas desfavoráveis. Entretanto, não há nenhuma informação sobre a suscetibilidade dessa cultura a P. brachyurus. Dentro desse contexto, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a suscetibilidade de cultivares de sorgo granífero e capim-sudão a P. brachyurus em dois ensaios em casa de vegetação. No primeiro experimento, foram testados o capim-sudão e os sorgos graníferos DKB 510, Dow 740, Dow 822, DKB 599 e AG 1040. No segundo experimento, capim-sudão e os cultivares de sorgo granífero Dow 740 e DKB 599 foram testados novamente. Os resultados de ambos os ensaios demonstraram que o capim-sudão e o sorgo granífero são suscetíveis a P. brachyurus. Esses resultados, mais os obtidos para outros tipos de sorgo, demonstram que S. bicolor e o capim-sudão devem ser evitados em áreas infestadas com P. brachyurus, já que essas culturas aumentam dramaticamente as densidades populacionais do nematoide das lesões no solo.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, the root-lesion nematode Pratylenchus brachyurus (Godfrey) is a major pest of soybean in Brazil, mainly in areas using double cropping with maize or cotton, which are suitable hosts for P. brachyurus. A great effort has been made to find cash crops for P. brachyurus management. Grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.)] was classified as a non-host for P. brachyurus but based on a single trial. It would be a valuable option as a culture for double cropping with soybean, as it is profitable and can be used in root-lesion nematode management. Sudangrass (S. bicolor var. sudanense) is not directly profitable, but Brazilian farmers favor it because it can produce pasture, green chop, silage, or hay under unfavorable hydric conditions. However, no information is available regarding the suitability of sudangrass for P. brachyurus. Thus, the current study aimed to assess the suitability of grain sorghum and sudangrass for P. brachyurus in two glasshouse trials. The first trial tested sudangrass and grain sorghum ‘DKB 510’, ‘Dow 740’, ‘Dow 822’, ‘DKB 599’, and ‘AG 1040’. The second trial retested sudangrass and grain sorghum ‘Dow 740’ and ‘DKB 599’. The results demonstrated that sudangrass and grain sorghum were suitable hosts for P. brachyurus. These results, in addition to those obtained for other types of sorghum, emphasize that S. bicolor and sudangrass should be avoided in fields infested with P. brachyurus, as they increase the nematode population.

Estudos anteriores demonstraram que compostos orgânicos voláteis (COVs), produzidos pela levedura Saccharomyces cerevisiae, são capazes de inibir o desenvolvimento de fungos fitopatogênicos. Neste contexto, foi avaliado o potencial nematicida da mistura sintética de COVs, constituída por alcoóis e ésteres, para o controle do nematóide das galhas Meloidogyne javanica, que causa perdas em culturas de alto valor econômico. A fumigação do substrato, contendo juvenis de segundo estádio, com COVs apresentou efeito nematicida superior a 30% na menor dosagem testada (33,3 µL g-1 de substrato), enquanto que nas dosagens de 66,6 e 133,3 µL g-1, a mortalidade atingiu 100%. Os resultados encorajam maiores estudos envolvendo COVs no manejo de nematóides.

Previous studies have demonstrated that volatile organic compounds (VOCs), produced by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, were able to inhibit the development of phytopathogenic fungi. In this context, the nematicidal potential of the synthetic mixture of VOCs, constituted of alcohols and esters, was evaluated for the control of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica, which causes losses to crops of high economic value. The fumigation of substrate containing second-stage juveniles with VOCs exhibited nematicidal effect higher than 30% for the lowest concentration tested (33.3 µL g-1 substrate), whereas at 66.6 and 133.3 µL g-1 substrate, the nematode mortality was 100%. The present results stimulate other studies on VOCs for nematode management.

O efeito de abamectina em tratamento de sementes na penetração, colonização e reprodução de Meloidogyne incognita, em algodão, foi avaliado em dois experimentos de casa de vegetação. A penetração de juvenis de segundo estádio (J2) foi avaliada aos três, nove e 15 dias após a germinação (dag), enquanto que a colonização 27dag foi avaliada por meio da contagem do número total de galhas e massas de ovos por sistema radicular. Ovos e J2 de M. incognita foram extraídos das raízes para determinar a reprodução do nematoide aos 50 e 100dag. O tratamento de sementes diminuiu a penetração dos J2 nas raízes, resultando em menor colonização e reprodução de M. incognita. Os resultados obtidos são discutidos tendo em vista os aspectos ambientais da presença de abamectina no solo e as práticas agrícolas em uso.

The effect of abamectin, applied as seed treatment, on Meloidogyne incognita penetration, colonization, and reproduction on cotton was evaluated in two greenhouse experiments. Second stage juveniles (J2) penetration was evaluated 3, 9 and 15 days after germination (dag), whereas the nematode colonization was evaluated 27dag, by counting the total number of galls and egg masses per root system. Eggs and J2 were extracted from the roots to assess the nematode reproduction at 50 and 100dag. The seed treatment caused a decrease in J2 penetration in the roots, resulting in lower colonization and reproduction of M. incognita. These findings are discussed considering the environmental aspects of abamectin in the soil and the current practices for the crop management.
