The Patagonian toothfish or Chilean sea bass (Dissostichus eleginoides), found in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, is an important fishery species for Chile. This high-value species is regarded as overfished, making it an attractive target for aquaculture. When developing a reproduction program for any aquaculture species, it is important to implement genetic tools to evaluate diversity, inbreeding, and parentage. We calculated genetic diversity and paternity/maternity exclusion probabilities based on five commonly-used microsatellite loci in a natural population of Patagonian toothfish from southern Chile (n = 34) in order to evaluate the potential utility of these five markers in stock management. The observed number of alleles per locus (Na) and observed heterozygosities (H O) are within range as described by studies performed in other sub-Antarctic regions. All five loci were strongly polymorphic, with H O > 0.6 and Na > 7, and paternity exclusion probabilities were high (PE > 0.99), indicating the potential utility of these loci in paternity/maternity exclusion analyses of Patagonian toothfish.

The presence of Alsodespehuenche in Chile was reported in the year 2010, based on the observation of larvae near the Chilean-Argentinean border, about 3 km east of the northeast corner of the Laguna del Maule (Región del Maule, Chile). The taxonomic history of this species dates from 1965, with the re-discovery of Telmatobius montanus (which was later transferred to the genus Alsodes) in two localities, near the Laguna del Maule and Valle Pehuenche, located in Chile and Argentina, respectively. The literature review shows that the locality of Argentina described in 1965 became the type locality of A. pehuenche, while the Chilean locality was ignored; thus this latter locality continues to be a valid record for A. montanus. In this study we provide morphological, chromosomal and molecular evidence, which confirms the presence of A. pehuenche in Chile, in two new localities located near the site recorded in 2010 and the Laguna del Maule. We also include some field observations, which are discussed in the context of the information available for this species.

La presencia de Alsodes pehuenche en Chile fue reportada en el año 2010, a partir de la observación de larvas en las cercanías del límite entre Chile y Argentina, aproximadamente a 3 km al este del extremo noreste de la Laguna del Maule (Región del Maule, Chile). La historia taxonómica de esta especie se remonta a 1965, cuando se redescubrió a Telmatobius montanus (especie que luego fue transferida al género Alsodes) en dos localidades, cerca de la Laguna del Maule y Valle Pehuenche, ubicadas en Chile y Argentina, respectivamente. La revisión bibliográfica muestra que la localidad de Argentina descrita en 1965 pasó a ser la localidad tipo de A. pehuenche, mientras que la de Chile fue ignorada posteriormente, por lo que esta última continúa siendo un registro válido de A. montanus. En este trabajo se provee evidencia morfológica, cromosómica y molecular que confirma la presencia de a A.pehuenche en Chile, en dos localidades ubicadas cerca del sitio reportado en 2010 y de la Laguna del Maule. Además, se incluyen algunas observaciones de terreno que son discutidas en el contexto de la información disponible de la especie.

Spawning time in salmonids is a sex-limited quantitative trait that can be modified by selection. In rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), various quantitative trait loci (QTL) that affect the expression of this trait have been discovered. In this study, we describe four microsatellite loci associated with two possible spawning time QTL regions in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). The four loci were identified in females from two populations (early and late spawners) produced by divergent selection from the same base population. Three of the loci (OmyFGT34TUF, One2ASC and One19ASC) that were strongly associated with spawning time in coho salmon (p < 0.0002) were previously associated with QTL for the same trait in rainbow trout; a fourth loci (Oki10) with a suggestive association (p = 0.00035) mapped 10 cM from locus OmyFGT34TUF in rainbow trout. The changes in allelic frequency observed after three generations of selection were greater than expected because of genetic drift. This work shows that comparing information from closely-related species is a valid strategy for identifying QTLs for marker-assisted selection in species whose genomes are poorly characterized or lack a saturated genetic map.

The present research is based on the need to evaluate the impact of the Problem-Based-Learning (PBL) on the initial teacher education at the Facultad de Humanidades y Educación at the Universidad de Atacama. To achieve this objective, the first two cohorts of students that graduated after the implementation of the new curricula including this approach were chosen (2000-2001). The purpose is to look for evidences that show the competences developed during the education process and that could be related to the aims of working with PBL as well as to its influence in the professional performance. The results of this research link the PBL approach directly to the development of the competencies necessary for the proper insertion in teamwork.

La presente investigación se funda en la necesidad de evaluar el impacto que tiene el enfoque de Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas** en la formación inicial docente de la Facultad de Humanidades y Educación de la Universidad de Atacama. Para ello se han escogido las primeras dos cohortes egresadas desde la implementación del nuevo currículum con este enfoque (2000 y 2001), buscando evidencias que den cuenta de las competencias desarrolladas durante la formación y que puedan ser relacionadas con los objetivos de trabajo del ABP y que intervengan en el desempeño profesional. Los resultados de esta investigación vinculan directamente el enfoque de ABP con el desarrollo de competencias para la adecuada inserción en equipos de trabajo.

Esta pesquisa é motivada pela necessidade de avaliar o impacto da abordagem da Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas (ABP) na formação inicial de professores pela Faculdade de Ciências Humanas e Educação da Universidade de Atacama. Para tal efeito, foram escolhidas as duas primeiras coortes graduadas a partir da implementação do novo currículo com esta abordagem (2000 e 2001), procurando evidências que mostrem as competências desenvolvidas durante a sua formação e que estejam relacionadas aos objetivos da ABP e que interfiram no desempenho do profissional. Os resultados desta pesquisa ligam diretamente a abordagem ABP com o desenvolvimento de competências para uma boa integração em equipes de trabalho.

Introduction: Impulsiveness and aggressiveness are characteristics of borderline personality disorders. Aggressive and impulsive behaviors are associated to a serotoninergic system dysfunction and are treated with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRJs). The short (S) allele of the serotonin transporter promoter (5-HTTPR) gene is associated to a worse response to SSRI in major depression. The objective of this work is to study the anti-impulsive effect of fluoxetine and his relation with short and long alleles of 5-HTTPR gene in borderline personality disordered patients. Method: 59 patients with DSM-IV borderline personality disorder were treated with fluoxetine for 12 weeks. Impulsivity was evaluated with the Overt Aggression Scale Modified (OAS-M). Polymorphisms L and S of the 5-HTTPR gene were determined. Results: S carriers (LS and SS) had a significantly minor response on OAS-M and Aggression subscale than LL carriers. Conclusions: S allele of the 5-HTTPR gene predicts poor response to anti-impulsive effect of fluoxetine in borderline personality disorder. It is likely that multiple genes contribute to a SSRI response.

Introducción: Los trastornos límite de personalidad se caracterizan por una elevada impulsividad y agresividad. Las conductas agresivas e impulsivas se han asociado a disfunciones del sistema serotoninérgico y responden a los inhibidores de la recaptura de serotonina (ISRS). En depresión mayor el alelo corto (S) del promotor del gene del transportador de serotonina se asocia a pobre respuesta a los ISRS. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar el efecto anti-impulsivo de serotonina y su relación con los alelos LyS en pacientes con trastorno límite de personalidad. Método: 59 pacientes con trastorno límite de personalidad fueron tratados por 12 semanas confluoxetina. Se evaluó la impulsividad mediante la Overt Aggression Scale Modified (OAS-M)yse determinó los polimorfismos LyS. Resultados: Los portadores de S (LS y SS) presentaron una menor reducción en la OAS-M total y en la subescala de agresividad que los homocigotos LL. Conclusiones: En trastorno límite de personalidad el alelo S del promotor del gene del transportador de serotonina predice pobre respuesta anti-impulsiva de lafluoxetina. Probablemente múltiples genes participen en la respuesta a los ISRS.

Most Chilean amphibians belong to the subfamily Telmatobiinae (Anura, Leptodactylidae). Several phylogenetic studies of Leptodactylidae and Telmatobiinae, based principally on morphological characters, have implicitly suggested closer relationships of some species of the Telmatobiinae with members of other subfamilies of leptodactylids, including the leptodactyline genus Pleurodema which is present in Chile. Furthermore, a growing number of molecular studies suggest a non monophyletic status for Telmatobiinae, although none of these studies have investigated the phylogenetic relationships of this subfamily. We compared partial sequences of the ribosomal mitochondrial genes 12S and 16S to determine the phylogenetic relationships of Chilean leptodactylids and its position within the modern anurans (Neobatrachia). We included 22 species from nine of the 10 genera of telmatobiines present in Chile (Alsodes, Atelognathus, Batrachyla, Caudiverbera, Eupsophus, Hylorina, Insuetophrynus, Telmatobufo and Telmatobius), two species of the genus Pleurodema, and one species of Rhinodermatidae, which is considered a leptodactylid derivative family by some authors. We also included 51 species representing most of the families that compose Neobatrachia. Phylogenetic reconstructions were performed using the methods of maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference. The topologies obtained in all the analyses indicate that Telmatobiinae is a polyphyletic assemblage, composed by species belonging to Hyloidea (most of the genera) and species more related to Australasian taxa (the clade Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, defined as the tribe Calyptocephalellini). These molecular data support groups based on other kinds of evidence (Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, Alsodes + Eupsophus and Batrachyla + Hylorina) and raise new phylogenetic hypotheses for several genera of telmatobiines (Atelognathus with Batrachyla and Hylorina, Insuetophrynus + Rhinoderma). The phylogenetic relationships recovered in this study suggest a multiple origin for Chilean temperate forest frogs and reveal an unexpected level of taxonomic diversity and evolutionary divergence among Chilean leptodactylids

La mayoría de los anfibios chilenos pertenece a la subfamilia Telmatobiinae (Anura, Leptodactylidae). Varios estudios filogenéticos de Leptodactylidae y Telmatobiinae, basados principalmente en caracteres morfológicos, han sugerido implícitamente relaciones más estrechas de algunas especies de Telmatobiinae con miembros de otras subfamilias de leptodactílidos, incluyendo el género leptodactilino Pleurodema presente en Chile. Además, un número creciente de estudios moleculares sugieren un estatus no monofilético para Telmatobiinae, aunque ninguno de estos estudios ha investigado las relaciones filogenéticas de esta subfamilia. Secuencias parciales de los genes ribosomales mitocondriales 12S y 16S fueron comparadas para determinar las relaciones filogenéticas de los leptodactílidos chilenos y su posición dentro de los anuros modernos (Neobatrachia). Se incluyeron 22 especies de nueve de los diez géneros de telmatobinos presentes en Chile (Alsodes, Atelognathus, Batrachyla, Caudiverbera, Eupsophus, Hylorina, Insuetophrynus, Telmatobufo y Telmatobius), dos especies del género Pleurodema y una especie de Rhinodermatidae la cual es considerada una familia derivada de los leptodactílidos por algunos autores. Se incluyeron además 51 especies que representan la mayoría de las familias que componen Neobatrachia. Las reconstrucciones filogenéticas se realizaron utilizando los métodos de máxima parsimonia, máxima verosimilitud e inferencia bayesiana. Las topologías obtenidas en todos los análisis indican que Telmatobiinae es un ensamblaje polifilético, compuesto por especies que pertenecen a Hyloidea (la mayoría de los géneros) y especies más relacionadas con taxa de Australasia (el clado Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, definido como la tribu Calyptocephalellini). Estos datos moleculares respaldan agrupaciones basadas en otro tipo de evidencia (Caudiverbera + Telmatobufo, Alsodes + Eupsophus y Batrachyla + Hylorina) y plantean nuevas hipótesis de relaciones para algunos géneros de telmatobinos (Atelognathus con Batrachyla e Hylorina, Insuetophrynus + Rhinoderma). Las relaciones filogenéticas observadas en este estudio sugieren un origen múltiple para los anuros del bosque templado de Chile y revelan un inesperado nivel de diversidad taxonómica y divergencia evolutiva entre los leptodactílidos chilenos

Bufo spinulosus has a wide and fragmented range distribution in Chile (18° to 33° S) along altitudinal and latitudinal gradients. Genetic variation was estimated using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) markers in 10 populations from northern and central Chile. Morphometric and genetic information was analyzed as a function of geographical origin. The correlation between genetic and morphometric differentiation was analyzed by the Mantel test. An increase in body size as a function of latitude was observed. Specimens from El Tatio had the smallest body size and the greatest morphometric divergence. The AMOVA applied to genetic data indicated that 57.85 % of the variance is explained by interregional differences and that 30.12 % of the variance is found within populations. Low levels of within-regions genetic differentiation was observed in northern populations while higher levels of genetic differentiation was found in populations from central Chile. Mantel tests revealed a significant, positive correlation between genetic variation and geographic distance. When we excluded El Tatio population, Mantel test analyses showed significant correlations between morphological distance and genetic and geographic distances. We discuss whether water temperature could explain the morphological divergence observed in individuals from El Tatio

Bufo spinulosus presenta una amplia y fragmentada distribución en Chile (18º a 33º S) a lo largo de gradientes altitudinales y latitudinales. La variación genética fue estimada utilizando marcadores RAPD ("Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA") en diez poblaciones del norte y centro de Chile. La información morfométrica y genética fue analizada en función de la procedencia geográfica. La correlación entre diferenciación genética y morfométrica fue analizada utilizando la prueba de Mantel. Se observó un incremento en el tamaño corporal en función de la latitud. Los individuos de El Tatio mostraron el tamaño corporal más pequeño y la mayor divergencia morfométrica. El AMOVA aplicado a los datos genéticos indicó que el 57.85 % de la varianza es explicada por diferencias entre regiones y que el 30.12 % de la varianza se encuentra dentro de las poblaciones. Bajos niveles de diferenciación genética intraregional fueron observados en las poblaciones del norte de Chile, mientras que las poblaciones de Chile central mostraron niveles más altos de diferenciación genética. Las pruebas de Mantel revelaron una correlación significativa y positiva entre la variación genética y la distancia geográfica. Cuando excluimos la población de El Tatio, las pruebas de Mantel mostraron correlaciones positivas y significativas entre las distancias morfológicas, genéticas y geográficas. Se discute si la temperatura del agua podría explicar la divergencia morfológica observada en los individuos de El Tatio
