Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic periodontal status of impacted permanent maxillary central incisors (Mx.1) after a long term of orthodontic traction. Methodology This split-mouth study evaluated a sample of 11 patients (five females, six males) treated with Mx.1 unilateral traction one to 28 years after the removal of orthodontic appliances. The traction Group (TG) consisted of 11 Mx.1 and the Comparison Group (CG) comprised 11 spontaneously erupted contralateral Mx.1. High-resolution CBCT exams of central incisors were performed using Accuitomo (J. Morita, Kyoto, Japan). Cross-section imagens passing through the center of maxillary central incisors were used to measure buccal and lingual alveolar bone level. Presence of fenestration, root dilacerations, root coverage, and position of the root apex were also assessed in the same images. Clinical parameters included periodontal probing depth, attachment level, gingival bleeding index, plaque index, degree of gingival recession, amount of gingival mucosa, and evaluation of interproximal papilla and black triangle. Digital model analysis included an assessment of clinical crown height and width. Intergroup comparisons were performed using paired t-, McNemar’s, and Wilcoxon tests (p<0.05). Results Compared to CG, we found a significantly thinner labial bone plate thickness in TG at the middle (p=0.000) and apical (p=0.009) root level. We also observed an apical displaced labial bone crest level in TG (p=0.000). The Traction Group showed a greater frequency of root dilacerations and gingival recessions, a decreased amount of keratinized mucosa, and a decreased clinical attachment level at the labial aspect compared to contralateral teeth. Conclusions A decreased thickness and height of labial alveolar bone and gingival recessions were found in maxillary central incisors 15 years after orthodontic traction. Though incisor traction might cause some periodontal impact, differences are acceptable under a clinical point of view considering the cost-benefit ratio.

RESUMO Introdução: Um efeito colateral observado nos casos tratados com extrações é a instabilidade do fechamento ortodôntico do espaço. Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a influência da invaginação gengival, da presença de terceiros molares e do padrão facial na estabilidade do fechamento ortodôntico dos locais de extração na arcada superior. Métodos: Noventa e nove indivíduos (41 homens e 58 mulheres) com má oclusão de Classe I tratados com extração de quatro pré-molares foram avaliados. A reabertura dos locais de extração e as invaginações gengivais foram avaliadas nos modelos dentários digitalizados nos estágios pós-tratamento e um ano pós-tratamento (idade média de 16,1 anos). A presença dos terceiros molares foi avaliada em radiografias panorâmicas de um ano pós-tratamento, e o padrão facial (SN.GoGn) foi avaliado nas radiografias laterais iniciais. Análise de regressão logística múltipla foi utilizada para estimar a influência das variáveis independentes citadas na frequência de reabertura do espaço de extração. Resultados: A reabertura do espaço foi observada em 20,20% dos sujeitos um ano após a remoção do aparelho. Invaginações gengivais estiveram presentes em 25,73% dos quadrantes após a remoção do aparelho e em 22,80% após um ano pós-tratamento. O SN.GoGn pré-tratamento médio foi de 35,64 graus (DP = 5,26). Não foi observada influência significativa das três variáveis independentes sobre a instabilidade do fechamento do local de extração. Conclusões: A presença de invaginações gengivais, terceiros molares e padrão de crescimento facial não parece influenciar na reabertura dos locais de extração maxilar.

ABSTRACT Introduction: A side effect observed in cases treated with extractions is the instability of orthodontic space closure. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of gingival invagination, presence of third molars and facial pattern, on the stability of orthodontic space-closure in the maxillary arch. Methods: Ninety-nine subjects (41 male and 58 female) with Class I malocclusion treated with four premolars extraction were evaluated. Extraction sites reopening and gingival invaginations were evaluated in scanned dental models in the posttreatment and 1-year posttreatment stages (mean age 16.1 years). Third molars presence was evaluated at 1-year posttreatment panoramic radiographs, and the facial pattern (SN.GoGn) was evaluated in the initial lateral headfilms. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the influence of the aforementioned independent variables on the frequency of extraction space reopening. Results: Space reopening was observed in 20.20% of the subjects 1-year post-debonding. Gingival invaginations were present in 25.73% of quadrants after debonding and in 22.80% 1-year posttreatment. The mean pre-treatment SN.GoGn was 35.64 degrees (SD=5.26). No significant influence was observed of the three independent variables on the instability of extraction site closure. Conclusions: The presence of gingival invaginations, third molars and facial growth pattern do not seem to influence maxillary extraction sites reopening.

Abstract Coated archwires and ceramic brackets have been developed to improve facial esthetics during orthodontic treatment. However, their mechanical behavior has been shown to be different from metallic archwires and brackets. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the deflection forces in coated nickel-titanium (NiTi) and esthetic archwires combined with ceramic brackets. Material and Methods Non-coated NiTi (NC), rhodium coated NiTi (RC), teflon coated NiTi (TC), epoxy coated NiTi (EC), fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), and the three different conventional brackets metal-insert polycrystalline ceramic (MI-PC), polycrystalline ceramic (PC) and monocrystalline ceramic (MC) were used. The specimens were set up on a clinical simulation device and evaluated in a Universal Testing Machine (Instron). An acrylic device, representative of the right maxillary central incisor was buccolingually activated and the unloading forces generated were recorded at 3, 2, 1 and 0.5 mm. The speed of the testing machine was 2 mm/min. ANOVA and Tukey tests were used to compare the different archwires and brackets. Results The brackets presented the following decreasing force ranking: monocrystalline, polycrystalline and polycrystalline metal-insert. The decreasing force ranking of the archwires was: rhodium coated NiTi (RC), non-coated NiTi (NC), teflon coated NiTi (TC), epoxy coated NiTi (EC) and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP). At 3 mm of unloading the FRP archwire had a plastic deformation and produced an extremely low force in 2; 1 and 0.5 mm of unloading. Conclusion Combinations of the evaluated archwires and brackets will produce a force ranking proportional to the combination of their individual force rankings.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo desse estudo retrospectivo foi comparar a estabilidade em longo prazo em dois tipos de correção da mordida cruzada posterior, sendo a expansão rápida (ERM) e a expansão lenta da maxila (ELM).MÉTODOS: modelos de estudos de 90 pacientes adolescentes foram avaliados quanto às alterações na largura interdentária em três diferentes tempos: pré-tratamento (T1), pós-tratamento (T2) e pelo menos cinco anos pós-contenção (T3). Três grupos de 30 pacientes foram definidos de acordo com o tratamento realizado para a correção da mordida cruzada posterior: Grupo A (ERM), grupo B (ELM) e grupo C (controle - apenas tratamento com técnica Edgewise). Após correção da mordida cruzada, todos pacientes receberam aparelhos ortodônticos fixos corretivos Edgewise. Teste t pareado e análise de variância a um critério (ANOVA) foram realizados para identificar alterações significantes intra- e intergrupos, respectivamente (p < 0,05).RESULTADOS: exceto para a distância intercaninos, todas as larguras aumentaram nos grupos A e B de T1 para T2. Em longo prazo, a quantidade de recidiva não foi diferente para os grupos A e B, exceto para a largura 3-3, que apresentou uma maior diminuição no grupo A. Clinicamente, entretanto, a porcentagem de casos com recidivas da mordida cruzada posterior foi semelhante para expansões rápida e lenta da maxila.CONCLUSÃO:Expansões rápida e lenta da maxila apresentaram estabilidades semelhantes em longo prazo.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the longitudinal stability of two types of posterior crossbite correction: rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and slow maxillary expansion (SME).METHODS: Study casts of 90 adolescent patients were assessed for interdental width changes at three different periods: pretreatment (T1), post-treatment (T2) and at least, five years post-retention (T3). Three groups of 30 patients were established according to the treatment received to correct posterior crossbite: Group A (RME), group B (SME) and group C (control- Edgewise therapy only). After crossbite correction, all patients received fixed edgewise orthodontic appliances. Paired t-tests and one-way ANOVA were used to identify significant intra and intergroup changes, respectively (P < 0.05).RESULTS: Except for intercanine distance, all widths increased in groups A and B from T1 to T2. In the long-term, the amount of relapse was not different for groups A and B, except for 3-3 widths which showed greater decrease in group A. However, the percentage of clinically relapsed cases of posterior crossbite was similar for rapid and slow maxillary expansion.CONCLUSION: Rapid and slow maxillary expansion showed similar stability in the long-term.

Anterior spaces may interfere with smile attractiveness and compromise dentofacial harmony. They are among the most frequent reasons why patients seek orthodontic treatment. However, midline diastema is commonly cited as a malocclusion with high relapse incidence by orthodontists. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the stability of maxillary interincisor diastemas closure and the association of their relapse and interincisor width, overjet, overbite and root parallelism. Material and Methods: Sample comprised 30 patients with at least a pretreatment midline diastema of 0.5 mm or greater after eruption of the maxillary permanent canines. Dental casts and panoramic radiographs were taken at pretreatment, posttreatment and postretention. Results: Before treatment, midline diastema width was 1.52 mm (SD=0.88) and right and left lateral diastema widths were 0.55 mm (SD=0.56) and 0.57 mm (SD=0.53), respectively. According to repeated measures analysis of variance, only midline diastema demonstrated significant relapse. In the overall sample the average relapse of midline diastema was 0.49 mm (SD=0.66), whilst the unstable patients showed a mean space reopening of 0.78 mm (SD=0.66). Diastema closure in the area between central and lateral incisors showed great stability. Multivariate correlation tests showed that only initial diastema width (β=0.60) and relapse of overjet (β=0.39) presented association with relapse of midline diastema. Conclusions: Midline diastema relapse was statistically significant and occurred in 60% of the sample, while lateral diastemas closure remained stable after treatment. Only initial diastema width and overjet relapse showed association with relapse of midline diastema. There was no association between relapse of interincisor diastema and root parallelism.

OBJETIVO: a proposta desse estudo foi comparar, cefalometricamente, os efeitos esqueléticos e dentoalveolares no tratamento da má oclusão de Classe II com os distalizadores Pendulum e Jones jig, seguidos de aparelho fixo corretivo, e compará-los ao grupo controle. MÉTODOS: a amostra foi dividida em três grupos. Grupo 1: 18 pacientes tratados com o Pendulum; grupo 2: 25 pacientes tratados com o Jones jig; e grupo 3: 19 jovens com má oclusão de Classe II não tratada. Empregou-se o teste qui-quadrado para avaliar a distribuição da severidade e do sexo. Os grupos 1 e 2 foram comparados ao controle pela ANOVA a um critério; também empregou-se o teste de Tukey com o intuito de diferenciar as alterações do tratamento daquelas ocorridas pelo crescimento craniofacial. RESULTADOS: não foram observadas alterações significativas entre os três grupos quanto aos componentes da maxila, mandíbula, relação maxilomandibular, padrão cefálico e tegumentar. Verificou-se uma vestibularização significativamente maior dos incisivos inferiores nos grupos experimentais e maior angulação mesial dos segundos molares superiores no grupo 2 (Jones jig). Nos grupos experimentais, a relação dentária e os trespasses horizontal e vertical foram corrigidos. CONCLUSÃO: pode-se afirmar que os distalizadores alcançaram seus objetivos de correção da Classe II.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to cephalometrically compare the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects in the treatment of Class II malocclusion with Pendulum and Jones jig appliances, followed by fixed corrective orthodontics, and to compare such effects to a control group. METHODS: The sample was divided into three groups. Group 1: 18 patients treated with Pendulum, Group 2: 25 patients treated with Jones jig, and Group 3: 19 young subjects with untreated Class II malocclusions and initial mean age of 12.88 years. The chi-square test was applied to assess severity and gender distribution. Groups 1 and 2 were compared to the control group by means of the one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests in order to differentiate treatment changes from those occurred by craniofacial growth. RESULTS: There were no significant changes among the three groups with regard to the components of the maxilla and the mandible, maxillomandibular relationship, cephalometric and tegumental pattern. Buccal tipping of mandibular incisors was significantly greater in the experimental groups and increased mesial angulation of the maxillary second molars was found in the Jones jig group. In the experimental groups, dental relationship, overbite and overjet were corrected. CONCLUSION: It can be stated that the distalization achieved its purpose of correcting the Class II.

OBJETIVO: determinar os valores médios de normalidade das grandezas cefalométricas tegumentares de jovens mestiços nipo-brasileiros com oclusão normal, e compará-los com amostras compatíveis de jovens brasileiros leucodermas e xantodermas. MÉTODOS: foram utilizadas 40 telerradiografias de jovens leucodermas, 32 de nipo-brasileiros e 33 de xantodermas. As três amostras apresentavam indivíduos com oclusão normal e face bem balanceada. As amostras foram divididas por sexo devido às características do tecido mole e para facilitar a comparação. Foram realizados os testes estatísticos análise de variância a um critério (ANOVA) e a análise de covariância (ANCOVA) com p < 0,05. RESULTADOS: a amostra nipo-brasileira para o sexo feminino apresentou menor espessura na região do násio e menor nariz em relação aos leucodermas. Em relação à amostra xantoderma, menor espessura na região supramentoniana e pogônio. No sexo masculino, os nipo-brasileiros apresentaram menor espessura na região do násio, maior espessura do lábio inferior e da região supramentoniana em relação à amostra leucoderma. Em relação aos xantodermas, maior espessura na região da glabela e da ENA-Sn. CONCLUSÃO: verificou-se a necessidade de se utilizar normas de tecido mole específicas para essa raça miscigenada.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the normality mean values in the soft tissue cephalometric measurements of young Japanese-Brazilian, with normal occlusion and compare the results of the variables with compatible samples of young Caucasians and Mongoloids. METHODS: Forty radiographs of young Caucasians, 32 of Japanese-Brazilians and 33 of Mongoloids were used. The three samples presented individuals with normal occlusion and well-balanced face. The samples were divided by gender due to the soft tissue characteristics and to facilitate comparison. The following statistical tests were performed: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with p < 0.05. RESULTS: The Japanese-Brazilian sample of females showed thinner soft tissues in the nasion region and smaller nose when compared to the Caucasians. The Mongoloid sample showed thinner tissues in the supramentonian and pogonion regions. In males, the Japanese-Brazilians had thinner tissues in the nasion region; thicker lower lip and supramentonian region in comparison to the Caucasian sample. For the Mongoloid, soft tissue was thicker in the glabella and ANS-Sn regions. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to use specific soft tissue standards for this mixed race.

OBJETIVO: esse estudo objetivou avaliar a estabilidade da relação molar na má oclusão de Classe II tratada ortodonticamente sem extrações, visando quantificar a recidiva e correlacioná-la a alguns fatores. MÉTODOS: a amostra constituiu-se de 39 indivíduos (16 mulheres e 23 homens) com má oclusão de Classe II tratada sem extrações, com aparelhos fixos. A idade inicial média foi de 12,94 anos; na fase final, foi de 15,14 anos; na pós-contenção, 21,18 anos. A média do tempo de tratamento foi de 2,19 anos e do tempo de avaliação pós-tratamento, de 6,12 anos. Para verificar a influência da severidade da relação molar de Classe II inicial na estabilidade da relação molar, a amostra foi dividida em dois grupos, um apresentando relação molar de ½ Classe II ou ¾ de Classe II, e outro apresentando relação molar de Classe II completa. Nos modelos de estudo das três fases estudadas, foram medidas a relação molar, as relações de primeiros e segundos pré-molares e de caninos. Os dados foram analisados pelos testes ANOVA dependente, de Tukey, correlação de Pearson e teste t independente entre dois grupos, divididos pela severidade da relação molar inicial. RESULTADOS: houve recidiva não significativa de 0,12mm na relação molar. A severidade inicial da relação molar de Classe II não se correlacionou com a recidiva no período pós-contenção. Quando a amostra dividiu-se em dois grupos, nenhuma diferença foi encontrada na recidiva da relação molar. CONCLUSÃO: a correção da relação molar de Classe II é estável e a severidade inicial não exerce influência sobre a recidiva da relação molar.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the stability of molar relationship after non-extraction treatment of Class II malocclusion. METHODS: The sample comprised 39 subjects (16 females, 23 males) with initial Class II malocclusion treated with no extractions, using fixed appliances. Mean age at the beginning of treatment was 12.94 years, at the end of treatment was 15.14 years and at post-retention stage was 21.18 years. Mean treatment time was 2.19 years and mean time of post-treatment evaluation was 6.12 years. To verify the influence of the severity of initial Class II molar relationship in stability of molar relationship, the sample was divided into two groups, one presenting a ½-cusp or ¾-cusp Class II molar relationship, and the other with full-cusp Class II molar relationship. In dental casts from initial, final and postretention stages, molar, first and second premolars and canine relationships were measured. Data obtained were analyzed by dependent ANOVA, Tukey and Pearson's correlation tests, as well as independent t test between the two groups divided by severity of initial molar relationship. RESULTS: There was a non-statistically significant 0.12 mm relapse of molar relationship. The initial severity of Class II molar relationship was not correlated to relapse in the post-retention period. When compared, the two groups showed no difference in relapse of molar relationship. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that correction of Class II molar relationship is stable and initial severity does not influence relapse of molar relationship.

OBJETIVO: esse estudo objetivou avaliar os efeitos cefalométricos promovidos pelo tratamento ortodôntico de pacientes com má oclusão de Classe II com o uso da Teoria de Força das 10 Horas, que consiste no uso de aparelho ortodôntico fixo, 8 horas diárias de uso de aparelho extrabucal cervical e 16 horas de uso de elásticos de Classe II, sendo 8 horas com apoio no primeiro molar inferior e 8 horas com apoio no segundo molar inferior. MÉTODOS: a amostra consistiu de 31 pacientes, com idade média inicial de 14,90 anos, idade média final de 17,25 anos e tempo médio de tratamento de 2,35 anos. Foram avaliadas as telerradiografias em norma lateral nas fases pré e pós-tratamento ortodôntico. Para avaliação das alterações cefalométricas entre as fases inicial e final de tratamento, foi utilizado o teste t dependente. RESULTADOS: os casos tratados com a Teoria de Força das 10 Horas apresentaram uma suave restrição do deslocamento anterior da maxila, aumento do comprimento efetivo da mandíbula, melhora significativa da relação maxilomandibular, aumento significativa da altura facial anteroinferior, inclinação para distal da coroa dos pré-molares superiores, extrusão e inclinação para distal da raiz dos molares superiores, inclinação para vestibular e protrusão significativa dos incisivos inferiores, extrusão e mesialização significativos dos molares inferiores, além de correção significativa da relação molar e dos trespasses horizontal e vertical. CONCLUSÃO: o uso da Teoria de Força das 10 Horas no tratamento da má oclusão de Classe II proporcionou resultados satisfatórios.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the cephalometric effects promoted by the orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusion patients with the use of the 10-Hour Force Theory, that consists in the use of fixed appliances with 8 hours a day using a cervical headgear appliance and 16 hours a day using Class II elastics, 8 hours on the first mandibular molar and 8 hours in the second mandibular molar. METHODS: Sample comprised 31 patients with mean initial age of 14.90 years, final mean age of 17.25 years and mean treatment time of 2.35 years. The lateral cephalograms in pre-treatment and post-treatment stages were evaluated. Evaluation of cephalometric changes between initial and final treatment phases was performed by paired t test. RESULTS: The cases treated with the 10-Hour Force Theory presented a slight restriction of anterior displacement of the maxilla, increase in the effective length of the mandible, significant improvement of the maxillomandibular relationship, significant increase in anterior lower face height, distal tipping of the maxillary premolar crowns, extrusion and distal tipping of the roots of maxillary molars, significant proclination and protrusion of mandibular incisors, significant extrusion and mesialization of mandibular molars, besides a significant correction of the molar relationship, overjet and overbite. CONCLUSION: The use of the 10-Hour Force Theory in treatment of Class II malocclusion provided satisfactory results.

OBJETIVO: o objetivo desse estudo retrospectivo foi comparar, por meio de telerradiografias, as alterações no padrão de crescimento facial decorrentes do tratamento sem e com extrações dos quatro primeiros pré-molares em indivíduos dolicofaciais. MÉTODOS: os grupos 1 e 2 foram constituídos, cada um, por 23 pacientes dolicofaciais com má oclusão Classe II, divisão 1 e idade inicial média de 12,36 e 12,29 anos, respectivamente. Os pacientes do grupo 1 foram tratados sem extrações e os do grupo 2 foram tratados com extrações dos quatro primeiros pré-molares, sendo que ambos utilizaram aparelho extrabucal occipital. Os grupos foram compatibilizados de acordo com a idade, tempo de tratamento, sexo e severidade da má oclusão. O teste t foi aplicado para a comparação intergrupos. RESULTADOS: a maioria das variáveis (SN.PP, SN.Ocl e FMA) não apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos. CONCLUSÃO: apesar do tratamento com extrações tender a reduzir a inclinação do plano mandibular (SN.GoGn) e o eixo facial (NS.Gn), os protocolos de tratamento analisados não alteraram de forma clinicamente relevante o padrão de crescimento facial.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this retrospective study was to compare, by means of lateral cephalograms, the facial growth pattern changes due to the treatment with and without extractions of four first premolars in dolichofacial individuals. METHODS: Groups 1 and 2 were constituted of 23 dolichofacial patients each, with Class II malocclusion, division 1 and initial age average of 12.36 and 12.29 years, respectively. Patients from Group 1 were treated without extractions and Group 2 was treated with extraction of the four first premolars, given that both used occipital headgear. Groups were compatibilized according to age, treatment period, gender and malocclusion severity. The t test was applied for intergroups comparison. RESULTS: Most variables (SN.PP, SN.Ocl and FMA) did not present statistically significant difference between groups. CONCLUSION: Although the treatment with extractions tend to reduce the mandibular plane angle (SN.GoGn) and the facial axis (NS.Gn), the analyzed treatment protocols did not affect in a clinically relevant way the facial growth pattern.

OBJETIVO: verificar se há diferença na largura dos corredores bucal e posterior em casos tratados com extrações de um e quatro pré-molares. MÉTODOS: por meio de fotografias do sorriso posado de 23 pacientes Classe II, subdivisão, tratados com extração de um pré-molar, e de 25 pacientes Classe I, Classe II e Classe II, subdivisão, tratados com extração de quatro pré-molares, calculou-se o percentual da largura dos corredores bucais e dos corredores posteriores. Os dois protocolos de extrações foram comparados quanto à largura dos corredores bucal e posterior por meio do teste t independente. RESULTADOS: não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa na largura dos corredores bucal e posterior entre os pacientes tratados com extrações simétricas e assimétricas. CONCLUSÃO: o corredor bucal e o corredor posterior não diferiram entre os protocolos de extrações avaliados.

OBJECTIVE: To verify if there is difference in the buccal and posterior corridor width in cases treated with extraction of one and four premolars. METHODS: Through posed smile photographs of 23 Class II patients, subdivision, treated with extraction of one premolar and 25 Class I and Class II patients, subdivision, treated with extraction of four premolars, the percentage of buccal and posterior corridor width was calculated. The two protocols of extractions were compared regarding the buccal and posterior corridor width by independent t tests. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference on the buccal and posterior corridor widths between patients treated with symmetric and asymmetric extraction. CONCLUSION: The buccal and posterior corridor did not differ between the evaluated protocols of extractions.

OBJETIVO: esse trabalho teve por objetivo descrever o padrão de angulações mesiodistais dos incisivos superiores em pacientes com diastemas nessa área e observar as alterações dessas angulações durante e após o tratamento ortodôntico. Também objetivou analisar se existe associação entre as angulações mesiodistais desses dentes nos estágios inicial, final de tratamento e pós-contenção e a recidiva dos diastemas anterossuperiores. MÉTODOS: a amostra consistiu de 30 pacientes que foram avaliados antes do tratamento, logo após e passados 7 anos da remoção do aparelho ortodôntico. Os indivíduos apresentavam má oclusão de Classe I ou Classe II e, pelo menos, um diastema interincisivos com largura mínima de 0,77mm antes do tratamento. Além disso, os caninos superiores permanentes apresentavam a metade da coroa na cavidade bucal, no mínimo. RESULTADOS: as angulações dos incisivos apresentaram tendência à mesialização com o tratamento ortodôntico, sendo que houve diferença significativa apenas para as angulações dos incisivos laterais. No período pós-contenção, as angulações de todos os incisivos permaneceram estáveis. Não foi observada associação entre a recidiva dos diastemas e as angulações dos incisivos superiores. CONCLUSÃO: as angulações mesiodistais dos incisivos de pacientes com diastemas nessa área sofreram poucas modificações com o tratamento, havendo uma maior tendência de mesialização das coroas dos incisivos laterais. Os resultados obtidos com o tratamento permaneceram estáveis. Não houve associação entre a recidiva dos diastemas anterossuperiores e as posições mesiodistais dos dentes analisados.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to describe the patterns of maxillary incisor angulation in patients with upper interincisive diastemas, to evaluate angulation changes with treatment and posttreatment period, and to assess whether there are association between incisor angulation and interincisive diastema relapse. METHODS: The sample comprised 30 Class I or Class II patients with at least one pretreatment anterior diastema of 0.77 mm or greater after eruption of maxillary permanent canines. Data were obtained from panoramic radiographs at pretreatment, posttreatment and at least 2 years post-retention. RESULTS: Incisors presented a mesial tipping tendency after treatment, but only lateral incisors showed significant changes between pre and posttreatment stages. CONCLUSION: Regarding post-retention period, no changes were found. Finally, no relation was found between diastema relapse and maxillary incisor axial angulation.

OBJETIVO: avaliar a estabilidade e recidiva do tratamento de apinhamento dos dentes anterossuperiores em casos com extrações de pré-molares e avaliar a tendência dos dentes apinhados, no início do tratamento, a retornar à sua posição original. MÉTODOS: a amostra consistiu de 70 pacientes de ambos os sexos, com má oclusão inicial de Classe I e Classe II de Angle, tratados com extrações dos primeiros pré-molares. A idade média inicial foi de 13,08 anos. Foram avaliados os modelos de estudo nas fases inicial (T1), final (T2) e, em média, 9 anos pós-tratamento (T3) de cada paciente. As variáveis da arcada superior avaliadas e comparadas estatisticamente pela Análise de Variância (ANOVA) foram: índice de irregularidade de Little Superior (IRLS), comprimento da arcada (CAS) e distância intercaninos (DICS). O Teste de Correlação de Pearson foi utilizado para verificar se alguma variável estudada teria influência sobre o apinhamento nas três fases (IRLS1, IRLS2, IRLS3) e em cada deslocamento de Little (A, B, C, D, E), na fase inicial e pós-tratamento. RESULTADOS: a recidiva do apinhamento superior (IRLS3-2) é influenciada pelo apinhamento inicial (IRLS1), e os dentes tendem a voltar à posição original. CCONCLUSÃO: os resultados ressaltam a atenção que o ortodontista deve dar à recidiva anterossuperior, principalmente àqueles dentes que estavam apinhados antes do tratamento.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the stability and the relapse of maxillary anterior crowding treatment on cases with premolar extraction and evaluate the tendency of the teeth to return to their pretreatment position. METHODS: The experimental sample consisted of 70 patients of both sex with an initial Class I and Class II maloclusion and treated with first premolar extractions. The initial mean age was 13,08 years. Dental casts' measurements were obtained at three stages (pretreatment, posttreatment and posttreatment of 9 years on average) and the variables assessed were Little Irregularity Index, maxillary arch length and intercanine. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to know if some studied variable would have influence on the crowding in the three stages (LII1, LII2, LII3) and in each linear displacement of the Little irregularity index (A, B, C, D, E) in the initial and post-retention phases. RESULTS: The maxillary crowding relapse ( LII3-2) is influenced by the initial ( LII1), and the teeth tend to return to their pretreatment position. CONCLUSION: The results underline the attention that the orthodontist should be given to the maxillary anterior relapse, primarily on those teeth that are crowded before the treatment.

OBJETIVO: o presente estudo objetivou comparar retrospectivamente a estabilidade pós-contenção do alinhamento dos incisivos anterossuperiores em pacientes com Classe I e Classe II. MÉTODOS: a amostra consistiu de 38 pacientes de ambos os sexos, tratados sem extrações e com mecânica Edgewise, divididos em dois grupos - Grupo 1, constituído por 19 pacientes, com idade inicial média de 13,06 anos, portadores da má oclusão de Classe I com apinhamento anterossuperior inicial maior que 3mm; Grupo 2, constituído por 19 pacientes, com idade inicial de 12,54 anos, portadores da má oclusão de Classe II e, também, com apinhamento anterossuperior inicial maior que 3mm. Foram medidos nos modelos de estudo, das fases pré- e pós-tratamento e pós-contenção, o índice de irregularidade de Little, as distâncias intercaninos e entre os primeiros e segundos pré-molares, a distância intermolares e o comprimento da arcada superior. Para a comparação intragrupo nos 3 tempos de avaliação, utilizou-se os testes ANOVA e Tukey. A comparação intergrupos foi realizada pelo teste t independente. Para verificação da presença de correlação, utilizou-se o teste de correlação de Pearson. RESULTADOS: os resultados evidenciaram maior estabilidade do tratamento no Grupo 2 (Classe II), pois, durante o período pós-contenção, foi observada recidiva do apinhamento dos dentes anterossuperiores menor no Grupo 2 (0,80mm) do que no Grupo 1 (1,67mm). CONCLUSÃO: concluiu-se que o tratamento do apinhamento dos dentes anterossuperiores é mais estável na má oclusão de Classe II do que na má oclusão de Classe I.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to retrospectively compare the postretention stability of maxillary anterior incisors alignment in Class I and Class II patients. METHODS: The sample comprised 38 patients of both genders, treated with nonextraction and Edgewise mechanics, divided into two groups: Group 1, comprised of 19 patients, at a mean age of 13.06 years, with Class I malocclusion and initial maxillary anterior crowding greater than 3 mm; Group 2, comprised of 19 patients, at a mean age of 12.54 years, with Class II malocclusion, and also with a initial maxillary anterior crowding greater than 3 mm. In the dental casts of pretreatment, posttreatment and postretention phase, the Little's irregularity index, intercanine distance and distance between first and between second premolars, intermolar distance and maxillary arch length were measured. For intragroup comparison among the three times of evaluation, it was used the one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey test. Intergroup comparison was performed by independent t tests. To verify the presence of correlation, the Pearson correlation test was used. RESULTS: It was evidenced greater stability of treatment in Group 2 (Class II), because during the postretention period it was observed a softer relapse of maxillary anterior crowding in Group 2 (0.80mm) than in Group 1 (1.67mm). CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that the treatment of maxillary anterior crowding is more stable in Class II malocclusion than in Class I malocclusion.
