Resumen La presente investigación está centrada en describir la percepción del estado del patrimonio gastronómico y cómo este patrimonio ha influido en el desarrollo sostenible del cantón Santa Elena, de la provincia de Santa Elena-Ecuador, para el desarrollo de un modelo funcional teórico que explique el desarrollo sostenible en función del patrimonio gastronómico local. El estudio es una investigación básica-proyectiva, con un diseño no experimental, transversal y niveles de conocimiento descriptivo, explicativo, predictivo con análisis de regresión logística ordinal. El tamaño de la muestra de la población de Santa Elena fue de 384 personas a las cuales se les aplicó dos instrumentos de recolección de información: el primer instrumento, referente al patrimonio gastronómico, cuenta con 21 ítems, y el segundo instrumento, referente a desarrollo sostenible en virtud del patrimonio gastronómico, 22 ítems. Se pudo describir el estado del patrimonio gastronómico con una percepción ciudadana del 60 % como fuerte, pero con dos de sus dimensiones con menor incidencia, éstos son el conocimiento y la organización. Así también, el estado del desarrollo sostenible donde el 84 % lo describen como débil o regular, teniendo más deficiencia el desarrollo ambiental y económico. Se evidencia la influencia del patrimonio gastronómico sobre el desarrollo sostenible en un 77,1 %. El modelo queda constituido por varios elementos del patrimonio gastronómico y ellos son: dimensiones de organización, conocimiento, simbólico y emotivo, que permitirán desarrollar la política pública local para fomentar el desarrollo sostenible en virtud del patrimonio gastronómico constituido por once artículos.

Abstract This research is focused on describing the perception about gastronomic heritage and how this legacy has influenced the sustainable development of Santa Elena Canton in Santa Elena province, Ecuador. One of the objectives was to develop a theoretical functional model that explains the sustainable development based on the local gastronomic heritage. The study is basic-projective research, non-experimental design and has a sample size of population with 384 people, according to the Santa Elena population, with whom two instruments were applied to collect information. The first instrument referring to gastronomic heritage has 21 items and the second instrument referring to sustainable development based on gastronomic heritage has 22 items. It was possible to describe that the state of the gastronomic heritage within citizen perception was about 60%, and considered as vital, but with two of its dimensions with less incidence these are knowledge and organization. Likewise, the state of sustainable development due 84% of survey respondents describe it as weak or regular, having more deficiency the environmental and economic development. Additionally, the influence of the gastronomic heritage on sustainable development was evident in 77.1%. The model is constituted by elements of the gastronomic heritage, which are organizational, knowledge, symbolic and emotional dimensions that will allow the development of the local public policy to promote sustainable development by the gastronomic heritage, constituted by eleven articles.

Resumen El artículo muestra la relación estructural entre el testimonio y el juicio estético, y cómo la mentira estructural se implica irreductiblemente como la posibilidad de la verdad. Se explica la necesaria imposibilidad del testimonio como condición de su posibilidad, argumento anticipado por J. L. Borges: “No hay una sola hermosa palabra, con la excepción dudosa de testigo, que no sea una abstracción”. La argumentación se apoya en la teoría husserliana del syncategorema (palabras incompletas cuyo sentido depende del contexto) y en los deícticos (palabras esencialmente ocasionales); asimismo, se toma de I. Kant el papel de la imaginación y los efectos del “como si”.

Abstract This essay demonstrates the structural relationship between testimony and aesthetic judgment. The implications of this discovery are several, the most important being the relationship between the lie and truth, implicating that lie indicates the irreducible possibility of truth. The essay explains the necessary impossibility of the testimony as a condition of its possibility, an argument anticipated in Jorge Luis Borges’ beautiful phrase, “There is not a single beautiful word, with the dubious exception of witness, that is not an abstraction”. The argument is based on Husserl’s theory of the syncategorem (“incomplete” words whose meaning depends on the context) and on deictic words (“essentially occasional” words); as well, it takes from Kant, the role of the imagination and the effects of the “as if”.

Resumen Objetivo. Determinar la asociación entre el esfuerzo percibido (VEP) y variables fisiológicas y determinar los factores predictivos de VEP durante el esfuerzo submáximo y máximo en adultos mayores. Método. Adultos mayores de Kansas (n = 100) y Costa Rica (n = 79) realizaron una prueba de esfuerzo submáxima y máxima. Se recopiló la VEP, nivel de educación y una puntuación total de la función cognitiva (PTFC). Se usaron análisis de correlación y regresión múltiple utilizando VEP como variable criterio y el consumo de oxígeno (VO2), tasa de intercambio respiratorio (RER), PTFC y nivel de educación como predictores. Resultados. Se encontró una correlación significativa entre la VEP y la RER (r = 0.22, p = 0.029) en el esfuerzo máximo. Los predictores de VEP para las mujeres fueron VO2, RER y PTFC en diferentes etapas de la prueba. Para los hombres, la VEP fue predicha por RER, nivel de educación y VO2 en diferentes etapas. Conclusión. Las variables metabólicas y fisiológicas predijeron los valores de VEP en adultos mayores. La edad, la cognición y la FC no se relacionaron con la VEP en el esfuerzo máximo y la RER predijo las puntuaciones de la VEP durante el esfuerzo submáximo y máximo.

Abstract Objective. To determine the association between perceived exertion (RPE) and physiological variables and to determine the predictive factors of RPE during submaximal and maximal exertion in older adults. Method. Older adults from Kansas (n = 100) and Costa Rica (n = 79) performed a submaximal and maximal stress test. RPE, education level and a total score of cognitive function (CFTS) were collected. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were computed using RPE as the criterion variable and oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), CFTS and education level as predictors. Results. There was a significant correlation between VEP and RER (r = 0.22, p = 0.029) at maximal exertion. The RPE predictors for women were VO2, RER, and CFTS at different stages of the test. For men, VEP was predicted by RER, education level, and VO2 at different stages. Conclusion. Metabolic and physiological variables predicted RPE in older adults. Age, cognition, and heart rate were unrelated to RPE at maximal exertion, and RER predicted RPE scores during submaximal and maximal exertion.

Resumo Escopo. Determinar a associação entre o esforço percebido (VEP) e as variáveis fisiológicas e determinar os fatores preditivos de VEP durante o esforço submáximo e máximo em idosos. Metodologia. Idosos de Kansas (n= 100) e Costa Rica (n= 79) realizaram uma prova de esforço submáxima e máxima. Foi recopilada o VEP, nível de educação e pontuação total da função cognitiva (PTFCO. Foram usadas análises de correlação e regressão múltipla utilizando VEP como variável critério e o consumo de oxigeno (VO2), taxa de intercambio respiratório (RER), PTFC e nível de educação como preditores. Resultados. Foi encontrada uma correlação significativa entre a VEP e a RER (r = 0.22, p = 0.029)) no esforço máximo. Os preditores de VEP para as mulheres foram VO2, RER e PTFC em diferentes etapas da prova. Para os homens, a VEP foi predita por RER, nível de educação e VO2 em diferentes etapas. Conclusão. As variáveis metabólicas e fisiológicas predisseram os valores de VEP em idosos. A idade, a cognição e a FC não estiveram relacionadas com a VEP no esforço máximo e a RER predizia as pontuações da VEP durante o esforço submáximo e máximo.

Abstract: Woody plant encroachment (WPE) is reshaping the physiognomy of grasslands and savannahs worldwide. At the same time, this habitat conversion is accelerating the loss of associated biodiversity. In general, studies on WPE have focused on abiotic factors, singly or in combination, that trigger this phenomenon. Despite its ecological relevance, very few studies have tackled the effects of WPE-spurred habitat transformation on animal species dependent on relatively open areas such as grasslands and savannas for survival. We studied a relict and almost extinct population of large, herbivorous guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in the Gran Chaco region, Santa Cruz department, Bolivia. We tested whether guanacos were using habitats (at particular and distinct stages of WPE) in relation to their availability. Although this species is considered a generalist herbivore. We tested variation in habitat use focusing on two spatial scales. First, at the landscape level, we performed aerial surveys. Second, at the fine scale, we tracked six groups of guanacos for twenty months and documented the various habitats used within their approximate home ranges. At both scales, we performed a Manly-Chesson’s index referring to the standardised proportional use of each habitat divided by the proportional availability of each, with the values for all habitats summing to 1. An index value < 1 or > 1 suggests, respectively, that a habitat is avoided or selected. We found a disproportionate use of open vegetation (scrubland and grassland) by guanacos in relation to habitat availability at both scales. In addition, the current distribution range of the species is restricted to less than 800 km2 of the approximately 3,000 km² potentially available in 1998. We confirmed a contraction between 1996 and 2006 in the distribution of the local Chacoan guanaco population from the area where guanacos were first monitored towards the Kaa-Iya National Park border. Our results showed that guanacos are restricted to relatively open areas. Furthermore, the observed reduction in the area previously occupied by the species could be the beginning of a distributional shift and potential loss of the guanaco’s geographic range due to habitat replacement. The latter was also reflected in a previous dietary study of this population we found that guanacos largely consumed the native grass A. mendocina (Poaceae), which has shrunk in distribution by 90 % in this region over a 40 year period and is gradually being replaced by an invasive forb, Lippia sp. Therefore, if the overall purpose on evaluating habitat use is to understand the basic requirements to sustain this population of guanacos, we need to highlight the poor quality and acute regression of the current preferred habitat. In this case, habitat structure can have a profound effect on the success of the guanaco population recovery and its long-term establishment. Therefore, we urge researchers and decision makers to look beyond the more direct human-induced pressures on the species, such as hunting, competition with domestic livestock and agricultural development and consider the importance of WPE as a direct driver for habitat loss.

Resumen: El incremento de la vegetación arbustiva está reformando la fisonomía de los pastizales y sabanas a lo largo del mundo y acelerando la pérdida de la biodiversidad. En general, los estudios sobre arbustización se han focalizado en factores abióticos, actuando tanto en forma individual como combinados, que han disparado el fenómeno. A pesar de su relevancia ecológica, muy pocos estudios han enfrentado los efectos derivados de la transformación del hábitat vía arbustización, sobre especies dependientes, para su supervivencia, de áreas relativamente abiertas, tales como pastizales o sabanas. Nosotros estudiamos una población relictual y casi extinta de un gran herbívoro, el guanaco Lama guanicoe en la región del Gran Chaco en Bolivia. Allí pusimos a prueba la hipótesis de que los guanacos están usando hábitats (en diferentes estados de arbustización) con relación a su disponibilidad. Además evaluamos la prueba la variación en el uso del hábitat enfocado a dos escalas espaciales. Primero, a nivel de paisaje, a partir de reconocimientos aéreos. Segundo, a una escala fina, seguimos en el campo 6 grupos de guanacos durante 20 meses y registramos su uso de hábitat dentro de sus ámbitos de hogar aproximados. Para ambas escalas, aplicamos el índice de Manly-Chesson. Un valor del índice < 1 o >1 sugiere que el hábitat es evitado o seleccionado, respectivamente. Encontramos que los guanacos usan la vegetación abierta (matorral y pastizal) en forma desproporcionada en relación con la disponibilidad de los hábitats para ambas escalas de abordaje. Además, que la actual distribución geográfica de la especie está restringida a menos de 800 km2 de los ca. 3,000 km² potencialmente disponibles en 1998. Confirmamos una retracción, entre 1996 y 2006 en la distribución del guanaco chaqueño a partir del área donde fue monitoreado por primera vez hacia el límite del Parque Nacional Kaa-Iya. Nuestros resultados mostraron que los guanacos están restringidos a las áreas relativamente más abiertas. Además, que la reducción observada en el área previamente ocupada por la especie podría constituir el comienzo de un cambio distribucional y una potencial pérdida de rango geográfico para el guanaco, debido al reemplazo de hábitat. Esto último sumado a que la gramínea nativa Aristida mendocina (Poaceae), especie preferida en la dieta del guanaco chaqueño, está siendo gradualmente reemplazada por una leñosa invasora, Lippia sp. Por lo tanto, si el propósito global de la evaluación del uso de hábitat es comprender los requerimientos básicos para sostener esta población de guanacos, necesitamos destacar la pobre calidad y aguda regresión de su hábitat preferido contemporáneo. En este caso, la estructura del hábitat puede tener un profundo efecto sobre el éxito de la recuperación de la población de guanaco y su sostenibilidad a largo plazo. Por lo tanto, urgimos a los investigadores y gestores a considerar la importancia de la arbustización como un factor directo conducente a la pérdida de hábitat y una amenaza inminente a la biodiversidad regional.

Resumo As normas para a resolução de disputas se desenvolveram junto com a comunicação humana, literalmente milhares de anos antes da internet. A mediação surgiu como um sistema social que detém normas específicas de cada cultura e regras que as expressam. Até hoje, a mediação opera como um sistema de significados profundamente humano. Este artigo analisa se tais normas específicas para a mediação, testadas e refinadas com o tempo, serão transferidas, relativamente intactas, para o ambiente virtual. Para isso, será analisado como os designers constroem e implementam os ambientes virtuais e sua decorrente automatização tecnológica. Contudo, para realizar isso da melhor maneira os designers devem, em primeiro lugar, identificar, entender e respeitar os valores, a ética e o propósito implícitos nessas normas intergeracionais.

Abstract The norms of dispute resolution began their development alongside human communication, literally thousands of years before the internet. Mediation emerged as a social system possessed of culture-specific norms and rules that express themselves to this day, in how this mediation operates as a profoundly human system of meaning. This article asks whether these thoroughly time-tested and -refined norms specific to mediation will port over, relatively intact, into virtual space. To be sure, the answer will be seen in how designers build and implement the virtual spaces and attendant automation technology. To do that optimally, however, designers first must identify, understand and respect the values, ethics and purpose embedded in these inter-generational norms.

Abstract Background: Benzodiazepine and z-hypnotic prescribing has slowly decreased over the past 20 years, however long-term chronic prescribing still occurs and is at odds with prescribing guidance. Objectives: To identify the pattern of benzodiazepine and z-hypnotic prescribing in psychiatric inpatients at discharge and 12 months post-discharge. Methods: Retrospective observational longitudinal cohort study of patients admitted to two adult psychiatric wards between June and November 2012 (inclusive) who were discharged with a prescription for a benzodiazepine or z-hypnotic drug. Routinely collected prescription data available from NHS Scotland Prescribing Information System was used to identify and follow community prescribing of benzodiazepine and z-hypnotics for a 12 month period post-discharge. Data were entered in Excel® and further analysed using SPSS 23. Ethical approval was not required for this service evaluation however Caldicott Guardian approval was sought and granted. Results: Eighty patients were admitted during the study period however only those patients with a single admission were included for analysis (n=74). Thirty per cent (22/74) of patients were prescribed a benzodiazepine or z-hypnotics at discharge; 14 of whom received ‘long-term’ benzodiazepine and z-hypnotics i.e. continued use over the 12 month period. Seven patients received a combination of anxiolytics and hypnotics (e.g., diazepam plus temazepam or zopiclone). Long-term use was associated with a non-significant increase in median benzodiazepine or z-hypnotic dose, expressed as diazepam equivalents. Conclusions: One in three patients were prescribed a benzodiazepine or z-hypnotics at discharge with 1 in 5 receiving continuous long-term treatment (prescriptions) for 12 months post-discharge. As chronic long-term B-Z prescribing and use still remains an issue, future strategies using routine patient-level prescribing data may support prescribers to review and minimise inappropriate long-term prescribing.

La superposición en el uso de recursos entre el ganado bovino y los herbívoros silvestres tiene implicaciones para la conservación, particularmente si el alimento es limitado. El objetivo de este trabajo es investigar las dietas de un herbívoro silvestre y uno doméstico que viven en simpatría en comunidades vegetales degradadas por la invasión leñosa. Las muestras de heces de ambas especies fueron sometidas a análisis microhistológicos, siendo este trabajo el primer estudio que describe y compara la dieta de guanacos simpátricos con el ganado en la región de Chaco. Encontramos una riqueza relativamente alta de 53 especies de plantas en las dietas de ambos herbívoros, donde 4 especies fueron exclusivas en la dieta del ganado. Se observó una separación clara entre las dietas de guanaco y ganado en dos niveles usando el análisis de similitud (ANOSIM): a) nivel de especie (r = 0.52, p = <0.0001) y b) a nivel de grupo ecológico (r = 0.3312, p = <0.001). El ganado parece forrajear sobre todo en las especies leñosas coloniales principalmente responsables de la reducción de áreas abiertas, mientras que la dieta del guanaco incluye más la gramínea nativa, cuya perdida está caracterizando la reducción de las sabanas chaqueñas. Nuestro estudio plantea preguntas para futuras investigaciones que podrían formar elementos básicos de futuros planes de conservación para esta población de guanacos y otras especies aún existentes en el área de estudio.

Overlap in resource use between cattle and wild herbivores have implications for conservation, particularly if food is limited. The aim of this paper is to investigate the diets of a wild and a domestic herbivore living in sympatry in plant communities degraded by woody encroachment. Dung samples from both species were subjected to microhistological analysis, making of this work the first study describing and comparing the diet of sympatric guanacos and cattle in the Chaco region. We found a relatively high richness of 53 plant species in the diets of both herbivores, and 4 species were exclusive to cattle. A clear separation between the diets of guanaco and cattle was observed at two levels using analysis of similarity (ANOSIM): a) species level (r=0.52, p=<0.0001) and b) at ecological group level (r= 0.3312, p=<0.001). Cattle appear to forage mostly on the colonial woody species mainly responsible for the reduction of open areas while guanaco diets include more of the native grass most characteristic of the shrinking Chacoan savannahs. Our study raises questions for further research that could form core elements of future conservation plans for the guanaco population in the study area and beyond.

ResumenLos depredadores pueden influenciar una variedad de rasgos de la presa, incluyendo el comportamiento. Los rasgos tales como la audacia, nivel de actividad, y la tendencia a explorar; pueden ser moldeados por el riesgo de depredación. Nuestro estudio examina los efectos de la depredación en el comportamiento al considerar un sistema natural en el que dos especies hermanas de peces vivíparos, Brachyrhaphis roseni y B. terrabensis, se presentan en ambientes de depredación divergente. En febrero 2013, recolectamos peces en el drenaje del Río Chiriquí Nuevo, Chiriquí, Panamá y llevamos a cabo ensayos de comportamiento. Al usar ensayos de comportamiento en campo abierto, se evaluó el comportamiento en juveniles y adultos, machos y hembras, para determinar si los patrones de divergencia diferían entre las etapas ontogenéticas o entre sexos. Se evaluó la audacia como “tiempo en salir” de un refugio a un ambiente nuevo, y posteriormente se midió la actividad y la exploración dentro de ese nuevo ambiente. Nosotros predijimos que B. roseni (una especie que se presenta con los depredadores) sería más audaz, activa y propensa a explorar que B. terrabensis (una especie que no se presenta con los depredadores). En total, probamos 17 jóvenes, 21 machos adultos, y 20 hembras adultas de B. roseni, y 19 jóvenes, 19 machos adultos, y 18 hembras adultas de B. terrabensis. Recogimos todos los animales en Chiriquí, Panamá en Febrero 2013, y los probamos después de un corto período de aclimatación a las condiciones de laboratorio. Como se predijo, se encontró que la depredación ambiental se asoció con varias diferencias en el comportamiento. Tanto adultos y jóvenes de B. roseni eran más activos y más propensos a explorar que B. terrabensis. Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias en la audacia en adultos o menores. También se encontró una interacción significativa entre “sexo” y “especie” como predictores de la audacia y la exploración, lo que indica que la depredación puede afectar el comportamiento de los machos y hembras de manera diferente en cada especie. Nuestro estudio demuestra la importancia de considerar el sexo y la etapa del ciclo de vida al evaluar la evolución del comportamiento.

Abstract:Predators can influence a variety of prey traits, including behavior. Traits such as boldness, activity rate, and tendency to explore can all be shaped by predation risk. Our study examines the effects of predation on these behaviors by considering a natural system in which two sister species of livebearing fishes, Brachyrhaphis roseni and B. terrabensis, experience divergent predation environments. In February of 2013, we collected fish in the Río Chiriquí Nuevo drainage, Chiriquí, Panama, and conducted behavioral assays. Using open-field behavioral assays, we evaluated both juveniles and adults, and males and females, to determine if there were differences in behavior between ontogenetic stages or between sexes. We assessed boldness as ‘time to emerge’ from a shelter into a novel environment, and subsequently measured activity and exploration within that novel environment. We predicted that B. roseni (a species that co-occurs with predators) would be more bold, more active, and more prone to explore, than B. terrabensis (a species that does not co-occur with predators). In total, we tested 17 juveniles, 21 adult males, and 20 adult females of B. roseni, and 19 juveniles, 19 adult males, and 18 adult females of B. terrabensis. We collected all animals from streams in Chiriquí, Panama in February 2013, and tested them following a short acclimation period to laboratory conditions. As predicted, we found that predation environment was associated with several differences in behavior. Both adult and juvenile B. roseni were more active and more prone to explore than B. terrabensis. However, we found no differences in boldness in either adults or juveniles. We also found a significant interaction between ‘sex’ and ‘species’ as predictors of boldness and exploration, indicating that predation environment can affect behaviors of males and females differently in each species. Abstract The aim of the article isto analyze the negotiations between beliefs and sexuality through the biographical recounts of two women who have sex-affective relations with other women and identify themselves as Christian. Since religious institutions in Latin America play an important role in prescribing the ways of living sexuality within the familiar, heteronormative and reproductive norm; we are interested in approaching the universe of meanings in which modes of believe and live the sexuality are stressed and negotiated. Through the native category of “Scattered Christian” the article will reflect on the control of sexuality in religious and family spaces.

Resumen El artículo se propone analizar las negociaciones entre la creencia y la sexualidad a través de relatos biográficos de dos mujeres que mantienen relaciones sexo-afectivas con otras mujeres y que se identifican como creyentes cristianas. Considerando que las instituciones religiosas en América Latina juegan un rol importante a la hora de prescribir ciertos modos de vivir la sexualidad dentro de la norma familiar, heteronormativa y reproductiva, nos interesa acceder a ese universo de sentidos en el cual se tensionan y negocian los modos de creer y de vivir la sexualidad. Haremos hincapié en la categoría nativa de “cristiano apartado” y se reflexionará sobre el control de la sexualidad en los espacios religiosos y familiares.

ABSTRACT The Ministry of Health and Environment (MoHE) of the Commonwealth of Dominica identified the need for a knowledge management strategy to advance the country's national health agenda. The Pan American Health Organization and the MoHE conducted a rapid situation analysis of knowledge management in July 2015. The findings, analysis, and recommendations were developed jointly with a core team of the MoHE within the context of the strategic plan for health, “Investing in Health – Building a Safer Future.” The situation analysis described the overall status of the understanding and implementation of information and knowledge management activities, projects, products, and practices. The analysis also aimed to identify what critical knowledge is needed to support overall organizational goals and individual and team activities. The MoHE expects patient outcomes and quality of care to improve as a result of having a knowledge management strategy that boosts the Ministry's efficiency and productivity.

RESUMEN El Ministerio de Salud y Medioambiente del Commonwealth de Dominica determinó la necesidad de definir una estrategia de gestión del conocimiento para impulsar el programa nacional de salud del país. En julio del 2015, la Organización Panamericana de la Salud y el Ministerio de Salud y Medioambiente llevaron adelante un análisis rápido de la situación de la gestión del conocimiento. Los resultados, el análisis y las recomendaciones fueron elaborados conjuntamente con un equipo básico del Ministerio dentro del contexto del plan estratégico de salud Investing in Health: Building a Safer Future [invertir en la salud para forjar un porvenir más seguro]. En el análisis de la situación se describe el estado general del conocimiento y el desarrollo de actividades, la ejecución de proyectos, la elaboración de productos y la aplicación de prácticas de gestión de la información y el conocimiento. Dicho análisis además tuvo como objetivo definir el conocimiento fundamental que se necesita para apoyar la consecución de todas las metas institucionales y la realización de las actividades tanto individuales como grupales. El Ministerio de Salud y Medioambiente espera que mejoren los resultados de los pacientes y la calidad de la atención al contar una estrategia de gestión del conocimiento que le permita impulsar su eficiencia y productividad.

The intersection of teamwork and leadership results in tensions, dilemmas, and paradoxes for both individuals and for institutions such as simultaneously empowering individuals at the same time it frustrates them when our naive, cultural understanding of leadership centralizes power and values leaders who can impose their will and vision on others. Perhaps the fundamental paradox of teamwork and leadership is that the more leadership is focused on an individual the less likely a teams potential will be realized. Six specific domains where tensions arise are: at team boundaries; culture; who is in charge, rationality/cognition; diversity; and collaborations. Three approaches - clarifying different levels of analysis, temporal factors, and overarching concepts - to resolving tensions are discussed. New conceptions of leadership and the importance of the larger cultural frame within which they are embedded are needed for the management of technology and innovation.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most frequent cause of death in people with early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD), for whom the absolute risk of cardiovascular events is similar to people who have existing coronary artery disease. This is an update of a review published in 2009, and includes evidence from 27 new studies (25,068 participants) in addition to the 26 studies (20,324 participants) assessed previously; and excludes three previously included studies (107 participants). This updated review includes 50 studies (45,285 participants); of these 38 (37,274 participants) were meta-analysed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits (such as reductions in all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, major cardiovascular events, MI and stroke; and slow progression of CKD to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)) and harms (muscle and liver dysfunction, withdrawal, and cancer) of statins compared with placebo, no treatment, standard care or another statin in adults with CKD who were not on dialysis. METHODS: Search methods: We searched the Cochrane Renal Group's Specialised Register to 5 June 2012 through contact with the Trials' Search Co-ordinator using search terms relevant to this review. Selection criteria: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCTs that compared the effects of statins with placebo, no treatment, standard care, or other statins, on mortality, cardiovascular events, kidney function, toxicity, and lipid levels in adults with CKD not on dialysis were the focus of our literature searches. Data collection and analysis: Two or more authors independently extracted data and assessed study risk of bias. Treatment effects were expressed as mean difference (MD) for continuous outcomes (lipids, creatinine clearance and proteinuria) and risk ratio (RR) for dichotomous outcomes (major cardiovascular events, all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, fatal or non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI), fatal or non-fatal stroke, ESKD, elevated liver enzymes, rhabdomyolysis, cancer and withdrawal rates) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). MAIN RESULTS: We included 50 studies (45,285 participants): 47 studies (39,820 participants) compared statins with placebo or no treatment and three studies (5547 participants) compared two different statin regimens in adults with CKD who were not yet on dialysis. We were able to meta-analyse 38 studies (37,274 participants). The risk of bias in the included studies was high. Seven studies comparing statins with placebo or no treatment had lower risk of bias overall; and were conducted according to published protocols, outcomes were adjudicated by a committee, specified outcomes were reported, and analyses were conducted using intention-to-treat methods. In placebo or no treatment controlled studies, adverse events were reported in 32 studies (68%) and systematically evaluated in 16 studies (34%). Compared with placebo, statin therapy consistently prevented major cardiovascular events (13 studies, 36,033 participants; RR 0.72, 95% CI 0.66 to 0.79), all-cause mortality (10 studies, 28,276 participants; RR 0.79, 95% CI 0.69 to 0.91), cardiovascular death (7 studies, 19,059 participants; RR 0.77, 95% CI 0.69 to 0.87) and MI (8 studies, 9018 participants; RR 0.55, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.72). Statins had uncertain effects on stroke (5 studies, 8658 participants; RR 0.62, 95% CI 0.35 to 1.12). Potential harms from statin therapy were limited by lack of systematic reporting and were uncertain in analyses that had few events: elevated creatine kinase (7 studies, 4514 participants; RR 0.84, 95% CI 0.20 to 3.48), liver function abnormalities (7 studies, RR 0.76, 95% CI 0.39 to 1.50), withdrawal due to adverse events (13 studies, 4219 participants; RR 1.16, 95% CI 0.84 to 1.60), and cancer (2 studies, 5581 participants; RR 1.03, 95% CI 0.82 to 130). Statins had uncertain effects on progression of CKD. Data for relative effects of intensive cholesterol lowering in people with early stages of kidney disease were sparse. Statins clearly reduced risks of death, major cardiovascular events, and MI in people with CKD who did not have CVD at baseline (primary prevention). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: Statins consistently lower death and major cardiovascular events by 20% in people with CKD not requiring dialysis. Statin-related effects on stroke and kidney function were found to be uncertain and adverse effects of treatment are incompletely understood. Statins have an important role in primary prevention of cardiovascular events and mortality in people who have CKD.

The 21st century brings four important challenges in which cooperation plays a central role: (1) a rapidly increasing global interdependence that will result in increasing local diversity as well as more frequent and intense conflicts, (2) the increasing number of democracies throughout the world, (3) the need for creative entrepreneurs, and (4) the growing importance of interpersonal relationships that affect the development of personal identity. The tools for meeting these challenges include cooperative learning. In this article the nature of cooperative learning will be reviewed, the underlying theory of social interdependence will be discussed, and the results of the research on cooperative learning will be briefly reviewed. The way in which cooperative learning contributes to meeting the four challenges will then be discussed.

El siglo XXI trae consigo cuatro grandes retos en los que la cooperación juega un papel fundamental: (1) una interdependencia mundial cada vez mayor que se traducirá en el aumento de la diversidad local, así como en conflictos más frecuentes e intensos, (2) el aumento de sistemas democráticos en el mundo, (3) la necesidad de emprendedores creativos y (4) la creciente importancia de las relaciones interpersonales que afectan al desarrollo de la identidad personal. Las herramientas para responder a estos desafíos incluyen el aprendizaje cooperativo. En este artículo se revisara la naturaleza del aprendizaje cooperativo, se discutirá la teoría de la interdependencia social que subyace, y se revisarán, brevemente, los resultados de la investigación sobre el aprendizaje cooperativo.

OBJECTIVE: To monitor adult mosquito abundance in northern Belize before/after the first tropical storm of the wet season to estimate the time required for development/recovery of potential vector populations; determine which species predominate post-storm; and compare the effectiveness of two types of mosquito traps-octenol-baited Mosquito Magnets® and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) light traps (with/without octenol). METHODS: Field experiments were conducted in Orange Walk Town, Belize, 21 May to 3 June 2008. Incidence rate ratios and exact binomial 95% confidence intervals were reported and trap-nights calculated to compare species abundance pre- and post-storm as well as trap-type effectiveness. RESULTS: Twice as many species and three times more Anopheles spp. were trapped pre-storm versus post-storm. However, greater numbers of Aedes taeniorhynchus and Culex (Culex) spp. were trapped post-storm. Mosquito Magnets® were consistently more effective than the CDC traps, obtaining twice as many Anopheles spp. and four times as many culicine species as the octenol-baited version (which collected 14 times more mosquitoes overall and 3.5 times more culicine species than the unbaited version). The unbaited CDC trap did not trap any Anopheles spp. during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicated octenol is an effective attractant for An. crucians in northern Belize; malaria risk in Belize declines immediately post-storm (i.e., mosquito abundance drops); and arboviral risk associated with the rapid increase in culicine mosquitoes post-storm may represent a greater public health threat than malaria (although further research and active disease surveillance is necessary to validate this hypothesis).

OBJETIVO: Comprobar la abundancia de mosquitos adultos en el norte de Belice antes y después de la primera tormenta tropical de la temporada de lluvias, para calcular la cantidad de tiempo que necesitan las poblaciones de vectores potenciales para desarrollarse y recuperarse; determinar cuáles son las especies que predominan después de la tormenta; y comparar la eficacia de dos tipos de trampas de mosquitos: las que utilizan cebos de octenol (Mosquito Magnets®) y las trampas de luz con y sin octenol de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades de los Estados Unidos (CDC). MÉTODOS: Se llevaron a cabo pruebas de campo en Orange Walk Town, Belice, desde el 21 de mayo hasta el 3 de junio del 2008. Se registraron las razones de las tasas de incidencia y los intervalos de confianza binomiales exactos de 95% y se evaluaron las trampas nocturnas para comparar la abundancia de las especies y la eficacia del tipo de trampa antes y después de una tormenta. RESULTADOS: Antes de la tormenta, se atrapó el doble de las especies de mosquitos y el triple de Anopheles spp. en comparación con el período que siguió a la tormenta. Sin embargo, el número de Aedes taeniorhynchus y Culex (Culex) spp. atrapados fue mayor después de la tormenta. Las trampas Mosquito Magnets® demostraron uniformemente ser más eficaces que las trampas de los CDC, ya que el número de Anopheles spp. capturados fue dos veces mayor que el de la trampa con cebo de octenol y el número de especies de culícidos fue cuatro veces mayor. En general, el número de mosquitos capturados por la trampa con octenol fue 14 veces mayor que el de la trampa sin octenol y el número de especies de culícidos fue 3,5 veces mayor.
