Abstract This study assesses the vulnerability of Latin American economies, measured by GDP per capita, to precipitation and temperature fluctuations, in order to estimate how these countries are affected by climatic conditions. The Differentiated Generalized Moments Method (DIF-GMM) was used to verify the influence of climatic variables, together with economic indicators, on the level of economic activity. The results indicated that precipitation extremes, as measured by the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), are the dominant climatic influences on economic growth and that the effects are significant and negative. The Drought dummy was associated with a positive influence on GDP per capita, while the flood dummy Rain was associated with a negative influence for Latin American countries. It was found that temperature has a significantly lower effect than precipitation.

Resumo Este estudo avalia a vulnerabilidade das economias latino-americanas, medida pelo PIB per capita, a precipitação e flutuações de temperatura, a fim de analisar como esses países são afetados pelas condições climáticas. O Método de Momentos Generalizados Diferenciado (MMG-DIF) foi utilizado para verificar a influência das variáveis climáticas, juntamente com indicadores econômicos, no nível de atividade econômica. Os resultados indicaram que extremos de precipitação, medidos pelo Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), são as influências climáticas dominantes no crescimento econômico, e que os efeitos são significativos e negativos. A dummy de Seca foi associada a uma influência positiva no PIB per capita, enquanto a dummy de inundação, Chuva, foi associada a uma influência negativa para os países latino-americanos. Constatou-se que a temperatura tem efeito significativo menor do que a precipitação.

Resumo O estudo objetiva analisar como as diferenças nas características dos professores podem explicar a lacuna no desempenho educacional dos alunos do 9º ano do ensino fundamental entre escolas públicas urbanas e rurais no Brasil em 2017. Os resultados mostram que professores com licenciatura na área influenciam positivamente e significativamente o desempenho em Língua Portuguesa e Matemática, sendo o efeito maior para estudantes de escolas rurais. Contudo, essa influência descresse à medida que aumenta o quantil em ambas as áreas. Ademais, a decomposição sugere que a contribuição agregada das diferenças nas características dos professores, e de seus coeficientes, sobre os diferenciais é pequena quando comparada ao efeito agregado das outras características.

Abstract The study aims to analyze how differences in teacher characteristics may explain the gap in educational performance of 9th grade students between urban and rural public schools in Brazil in 2017. The results show that teachers with a degree in area that teaches positively and significantly influence the performance in Portuguese Language and Mathematics, the effect being greater for students of rural schools. However, this influence declined as the quantile in both areas increased. Moreover, the decomposition suggests that the aggregate contribution of differences in teacher characteristics, and their coefficients, to differentials is small compared to the aggregate effect of other characteristics.

A elevada incidência da pobreza e os grandes desequilíbrios nas condições socioeconômicas dos indivíduos residentes no meio rural dos estados da região Nordeste, são objeto de estudo quando se busca entender as diferentes dinâmicas geográficas do desenvolvimento econômico brasileiro. A partir dos anos 90, mesmo com a evolução positiva no desempenho econômico do país e com as grandes transformações econômicas ocorridas nas duas últimas décadas, observou-se que os progressos na redução dos problemas sociais no Nordeste rural foram bastante inferiores aos das demais regiões. O objetivo do trabalho é mostrar os efeitos das rendas Não-Agrícolas sobre os indicadores de pobreza Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) para as famílias rurais do estado de Pernambuco utilizando a metodologia Propensity Score Matching (PSM). De acordo com os resultados observados, o impacto médio das rendas não agrícolas sobre as exclusivamente agrícolas é de R$ 177,93 e R$ 180,40 pelos dois métodos de pareamento utilizados; a proporção de pobres cai mais de 24 pontos percentuais; o hiato da pobreza é reduzido em média 27 pontos percentuais e a severidade da pobreza diminui mais de 22 pontos percentuais.

The high incidence of poverty and the great imbalances in socioeconomic conditions of individuals residing in rural areas of the states of the Northeast, are the subject of study when it seeks to understand the different geographical dynamics of Brazilian economic development. From the 90s, even the positive developments in the economic performance of the country and the great economic transformations that have occurred in the last two decades, it was observed that the progress in reducing social problems in the rural Northeast were much lower than the other regions. The objective is to show the effects of non-agricultural incomes of the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty indices (FGT) for rural households in the state of Pernambuco using the propensity score matching methodology (PSM). According to the observed results, the average impact of non-farm incomes on agricultural exclusively to R$ 177.93 and R$ 180.40 for the two pairing methods used; the proportion of poor fell more than 24 percentage points; the poverty gap is reduced on average by 27 percentage points and the severity of poverty decreases more than 22 percentage points.

Resumo: O mercado de combustíveis tem sido amplamente estudado sob várias perspectivas, desde a questão da assimetria e transmissão de preços, formação de cartéis, dinâmica de preços atrelada às flutuações na economia internacional, sistemas de demanda, entre outras. Neste sentido, este artigo tem como objetivo estimar um sistema de demanda para gasolina comum, etanol hidratado e óleo diesel via modelo (LA-AIDS) Linear Approximation Almost Ideal Demand System com dados de séries temporais trimestrais para o período de 2001 a 2015 para o estado de Pernambuco. As estimações foram feitas por meio do método (SUR) Seemingly Unrelated Regressions. Os resultados encontrados são semelhantes aos observados na literatura, no sentido em que apontam para a inelasticidade-preço da demanda da gasolina e diesel, o que é esperado dada a essencialidade dos bens. Também foi possível verificar que a demanda por etanol é elástica por ter elasticidade-preço marshalliana maior que um em valor absoluto, convergindo para os resultados já encontrados em outros estudos.

Abstract: The fuel market has been widely studied at several perspectives, from the issue of asymmetry and transmission prices, cartels, dynamics linked to price fluctuations in the international economy, demand systems, among others. Thus, this paper aims to estimate a demand system for regular gasoline, hydrous ethanol and diesel via (LA-AIDS) Linear Approximation Almost Ideal Demand System with quarterly time series data for the period 2001-2015 in Pernambuco State (Brazil). The estimates were made using (SUR) Seemingly Unrelated Regressions. The results are similar to those observed in the literature, pointing to the inelasticity-price of demand for gasoline and diesel, which is expected given the essentiality of the assets. It was also observed that the demand for ethanol is elastic because of Marshallian price elasticity greater than one in absolute value, leading to the results already found in other studies.
