The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of soybean cultivar of two maturity groups, early/semi-early (E) or intermediate (I), on the management of Asian soybean rust (ASR) with fungicides and yield. Field trials were conducted during the 2006/07 and 2007/08 growing seasons. Seven cultivars of the two groups were tested in the first season and eight in the second season. All cultivars had plots that were treated (T) or non-treated (NT) with a commercial mixture of pyraclostrobin + epoxiconazole. ASR severity (%) was visually assessed several times during the crop cycle and yield (kg ha-1) was determined at harvest. Values of the standardized area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) calculated from the severity assessments was higher in 2007/08 than in 2006/07, but no differences were found between cultivars of the E and I maturity groups. Differences in yield between between T and NT plots were lower in cultivars of the E group than those of the I group in both the 2006/07 (37.6% and 52.8% respectively) and the 2007/08 season (56.9% and 85.0%, respectively). A higher stability in yield was found for cultivars of the E maturity group compared to those of the I group.

Este trabalho comparou o progresso da ferrugem asiática da soja na cultivar suscetível BRS 133 e na linhagem resistente CB06-953/963, com o gene de resistência Rpp4, sob tratamentos fungicidas em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento. Foram medidas as variáveis porcentagem de desfolha, coeficiente de dano (CD) e limiar de dano econômico (ETL), as duas últimas calculadas a partir da severidade da doença e produtividade de grãos. Os ensaios foram realizados em condições de campo nos anos 2006-2007 em uma época de semeadura (Experimento I) e em 2007-2008 em duas épocas de semeadura (Experimentos II e III). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso, com dez tratamentos e quatro repetições. Houve redução do progresso da doença em CB06-953/963 nos três experimentos realizados. Os valores de CD e ETL foram superiores na linhagem resistente em comparação à suscetível. No experimento II, o ETL para CB06-953/963 foi atingido 13,3 dias após o registrado para BRS 133. As aplicações fungicidas apresentaram maiores benefícios na produtividade e redução da desfolha na cultivar suscetível. Sob condições de alta pressão de inóculo (Experimento III), três e quatro aplicações de fungicidas resultaram em ganho na produtividade (P<0.05) nos dois genótipos de soja quando comparados aos controles sem aplicação de fungicidas. As aplicações de fungicidas, mesmo quando realizadas mais tardiamente nas cultivares resistentes, auxiliaram no controle da SR e na manutenção da alta produtividade.

This work compared development of soybean rust (SR) on the susceptible cultivar BRS 133 and on the resistant line CB06-953/963 (Rpp4 gene) following different fungicide treatments applied in different developmental stages. The assessed variables were percent plant defoliation, coefficient of damage (CD) and economic threshold level (ETL), the latter two calculated from disease severity ratings and yield. Experiments were conducted in the field during the 2006-2007 growing season with one sowing date (Experiment I) and in 2007-2008 with two sowing dates (Experiments II and III). The experimental design was a randomized complete block with ten treatments and four replications. Overall, the Rpp4 gene in the resistant line was effective in reducing development of SR in all three experiments. The values of CD and ETL were higher for the resistant line than for the susceptible cultivar. The resistant line needed 13.3 days longer than the susceptible cultivar to reach the ETL in Experiment II. Fungicide applications were more effective in protecting yield and minimizing defoliation in the susceptible cultivar than in the resistant line. Under high inoculum pressure (Experiment III), three and four fungicide sprays applied during the season resulted in significantly higher yields (P<0.05) in both soybean genotypes compared with the untreated controls. Late season fungicide applications reduced rust severity and increased the yield of the resistant cultivar.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram obter funções de dano para o patossistema ferrugem asiática da soja e verificar o potencial de uso de medidas de refletância para quantificar os danos causados pela doença. Experimentos foram conduzidos no município de Londrina, PR, nas safras 2005/06 e 2006/07. Ensaios foram repetidos em diferentes épocas de semeadura, a fim de obter intensidade variável da doença em diferentes estádios fenológicos. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Para obter gradiente de doença foram utilizadas diferentes épocas para aplicações de fungicida nas cultivares BRS 133 e Coodetec 217. A severidade da doença foi estimada em intervalos semanais e utilizada para calcular a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD). Medições da porcentagem de luz solar refletida pelo dossel foram obtidas com um radiômetro portátil de múltiplo espectro. O índice vegetativo da diferença normalizada (IVDN) foi calculado utilizando os comprimentos de onda na faixa do vermelho (660 nm) e do infravermelho próximo (810 nm). As variáveis AACPD e IVDN apresentaram alta correlação com a produtividade, com R² médio de 91,5% e 86,7%, respectivamente. Variações na severidade da doença entre as safras afetaram a relação AACPD x produtividade. Medidas de refletância podem ter sofrido a interferência da época de cultivo e das cultivares diferentes utilizadas nos experimentos.

The objective of this study was to develop yield loss equations for the Asian soybean rust pathosystem and to verify the potential use of measures of reflectance to quantify yield loss due to this disease. The experiments were carried out in Londrina, PR, in the 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 growing seasons. Tests were repeated at different sowing dates, in order to obtain variable disease intensity at different phenological stages of the crop. The experimental design was complete randomized blocks with four replicates. The treatments were characterized by different stages at the beginning of fungicide sprays on cultivars BRS 133 and Coodetec 217. Disease severity was estimated at weekly intervals and was used to calculate the area under disease progress curve (AUDPC). The reflectance measurements were done with multispectral radiometer and the normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI) was calculated for wavelengths 660 nm and 810 nm. The variables AUDPC and NDVI presented high correlation with yield. Average R² was 91.5% and 86.7%, respectively. Variations in the severity of disease between crops affected the relationship AUDPC x yield. Reflectance measures may have been affected by interference of the growing season and the different cultivars used in experiments.

Uma escala diagramática para avaliação da severidade da ferrugem da soja (Glycine max), causada pelo fungo Phakopsora pachyrhizi, foi desenvolvida nesse trabalho. Folíolos com severidade em diferentes níveis foram coletados para determinação dos limites mínimos e máximos e os níveis intermediários foram determinados de acordo com a "lei do estímulo visual de Weber-Fechner". A escala proposta apresentou os níveis de 0,6; 2; 7; 18; 42 e 78,5 %. A validação da escala foi realizada por oito avaliadores (quatro sem experiência e quatro com experiência), os quais estimaram a severidade de 44 folíolos de soja com sintomas de ferrugem, com e sem a utilização da escala. Com exceção do avaliador oito, todos apresentaram tendência de superestimar a severidade sem auxílio da escala diagramática. Com a escala, os avaliadores obtiveram melhores níveis de acurácia e precisão, embora a tendência para superestimiva tenha se mantido. Avaliadores experientes foram mais acurados e precisos do que avaliadores inexperientes, sendo a melhora nas avaliações com o uso da escala mais significativa para os avaliadores inexperientes.

A diagrammatic scale to assess soybean (Glycine max) rust severity, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, was developed in this study. Leaflets showing different severity levels were collected for determination of the minimum and maximum severity limits; intermediate levels were determined according to "Weber-Fechner's stimulus-response law". The proposed scale showed the levels of 0.6; 2; 7; 18; 42, and 78.5%. Scale validation was performed by eight raters (four inexperienced and four experienced), who estimated the severity of 44 soybean leaflets showing rust symptoms, with and without the use of the scale. Except for rater number eight, all showed a tendency to overestimate severity without the aid of the diagrammatic scale. With the scale, the raters obtained better accuracy and precision levels, although the tendency to overestimate was maintained. Experienced raters were more accurate and precise than inexperienced raters, and assessment improvements with the use of the scale were more significant for inexperienced raters.
