ABSTRACT The study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of using phytase levels at different energy densities in the diet of broilers, from 28 to 35 days of age. The experimental diets contained increasing levels of apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance and different levels of phytase. Growth performance variables, nutrient digestibility, as well as variables related to bone integrity were examined. Diets containing 500 FTU/kg in combination with 3150kcal.kg-1 of AMEn resulted in better growth performance. Supplementation with 500 and 1000 FTU/kg in the diets provide better coefficients of apparent and ileal digestibility of calcium and phosphorus, but negatively influence the deposition of calcium, phosphorus, dry matter, and ash in the tibia, in addition to adversely affecting the breakage and area of these bones in broilers. Bone length and the levels of magnesium and zinc present in the tibias were not influenced by the energy and phytase levels of the diets. There is no interaction between the different energetic densities and the phytase doses in the variables analyzed in the studied period. Increasing the energy density of diets resulted in improved apparent and ileal digestibility for most nutrients.

RESUMO O estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da utilização de níveis de fitase em diferentes densidades energéticas na dieta de frangos de corte, no período de 28 a 35 dias de idade. As dietas experimentais contiveram níveis crescentes de energia metabolizável aparente corrigida para balanço de nitrogênio e diferentes níveis de fitase. Foram avaliadas variáveis de desempenho zootécnico, digestibilidade de nutrientes e variáveis relacionadas à integridade óssea. Dietas contendo 500 FTU/kg de fitase em combinação com 3150kcal.kg-1 de EMAn resultam em melhor desempenho zootécnico. A suplementação com 500 e 1000 FTU/kg nas dietas propicia melhores coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente e ileal do cálcio e do fósforo, mas influencia negativamente na deposição de cálcio, fósforo, matéria seca e cinzas das tíbias, além de afetar adversamente a quebra e a área desses ossos em frangos de corte. O comprimento do osso e os níveis de magnésio e zinco presentes nas tíbias não são influenciados pelos níveis energéticos e de fitase das dietas. Não há interação entre as diferentes densidades energéticas e as doses de fitase nas variáveis analisadas no período estudado. O aumento da densidade energética das dietas resulta em melhora na digestibilidade aparente e ileal para a maioria dos nutrientes.

Abstract The aim was to evaluate the effect of different feeding volumes on the cut yield and meat quality of brown eggshell laying hens strain Embrapa 051 (E051) during the laying cycle, reared in an alternative system and slaughtered at 73 weeks, with reference to the lineage Lohmann Brown (LB). 600 hens E051 and 200 hens LB were used in an entirely randomized experimental design totalizing 5 replicates with 40 birds each. The treatments were: Control (LB fed with 100% of their dietary requirements), E051 fed with 93% of the control diet, E051 fed with 100% of the control diet, and E051 fed with 107% of the control diet. Birds were supplemented daily with 30g of ground grasses. Different feeding volumes did not alter the physicochemical quality of the meat and the cut yield. Body and cold carcass weight were greater in the E051 fed with 107% of the reference feed compared to the LB or the E051 fed with 7% less than the control diet. Yellow color intensity was greater in the E051 than in LB. The results demonstrated that, at the end of their productive cycle, the E051 without a restricted diet presents good carcass characteristics and potential for industrialized development.

Abstract Male broiler chickens (384), Cobb 500, were housed in metabolic cages to assess the efficacy of phytase in diets with low and high phytate-phosphorus on the performance, bone physical characteristics, tissue and serum mineral deposits. Birds were distributed in four treatments with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized block design. Experimental diets based on maize-soybean meal were T1 – diet low phytate-phosphorus; T2 – diet low phytate-phosphorus and phytase (500 FTU/kg); T3 – diet high phytate-phosphorus; T4 – diet high phytate-phosphorus and phytase (500 FTU/kg). Feed intake, body weight, weight gain and feed conversion ratio were assessed. Two left tibias per experimental unit were analyzed for physical characteristics and mineral concentration; a section of skinless breast muscle and blood were collected to measure the concentration of calcium, phosphorus and sodium. Results showed interaction between bone stiffness and serum calcium. The inclusion of phytase in diets with low and high phytate-phosphorus did not alter performance, bone resistance and flexibility, mineral deposits in the tibia and breast muscle, but increased bone stiffness after 22 days of age. It also provided a higher serum calcium rate in broilers fed diets with low phytate-phosphorus up to 32 days of age.

Abstract The cordillera del Kutukú is located in the southeastern Ecuador and is partially isolated from the Andes mountain range. We conducted five field expeditions to the region, where we directly obtained information regarding the richness of birds. In addition, we compile bird richness data from published records and Ecuadorian museum’s collections in order to provide an updated list. A total of 501 bird species were registered, in an elevation range from 500 to 2.300 m a.s.l. We found 13 species with new latitudinal and/or longitudinal distribution extensions. Twenty-six species (5.2%) are in an elevated risk category nationally or globally. The region’s limited roads, added to the Shuar ethnic group policies for entering to their territory has aided in the conservation of forests, especially those over 1800 m a.s.l. Thus, the biological knowledge of this area remains to be discovered. This remote area protects an important diversity, as well as threatened bird populations, water resources, territory and culture of the indigenous groups that inhabit it. However, unfortunately the entire mountain range is under concession for exploration of mining projects. Therefore, the attention of regional and national authorities is required to join efforts to ensure their conservation and biological exploration.

Resumen La cordillera del Kutukú está ubicada al sureste de Ecuador y se encuentra parcialmente aislada de la cordillera de los Andes. Realizamos cinco expediciones a este macizo, donde obtuvimos de manera directa información referente a la riqueza de aves. Además, con el fin de generar un listado más completo, realizamos una recopilación de registros publicados y revisamos colecciones de museos ecuatorianos. En total registramos 501 especies de aves, en un rango entre 500 - 2300 m de altitud. Encontramos trece especies con nuevas ampliaciones de distribución altitudinal y/o latitudinal. Veintiséis especies de aves (5.2%) están en alguna categoría de amenaza a su conservación, a nivel mundial y nacional. Las escasas vías de acceso, sumadas a las políticas de ingreso al territorio, por parte de la etnia Shuar, han favorecido la preservación de los bosques, especialmente aquellos por encima de los 1800 m. Es así que, el conocimiento biológico de esta área queda aún por descubrir. Esta zona remota protege una importante diversidad, así como poblaciones de aves amenazadas, recursos hídricos, además del territorio y cultura de las comunidades que la habitan. Desafortunadamente la totalidad de la cordillera se encuentra concesionada para exploraciones de proyectos mineros. Por tanto, se requiere la atención de las autoridades regionales y nacionales para aunar esfuerzos que aseguren su conservación y exploración biológica.

RESUMO: Dois experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar os efeitos do tamanho de partícula da farinha de ostras (FO) e relação Ca:P total em dietas para frangos de corte. No primeiro experimento, 800 frangos (22 a 42 dias) foram distribuídos em um delineamento fatorial 2x2: 2 relações Ca:P (1,7 e 2,0:1) e dois tamanhos de partícula da FO (grossa = 1354 µm e fina = 428 µm), totalizando quatro tratamentos com 10 repetições de 20 aves. O consumo de ração, o ganho de peso e a conversão alimentar foram calculados. No segundo experimento, 1.280 frangos foram distribuídos em um fatorial 2x2x2 (relações Ca:P 1,7 e 2,0:1; FO grossa e fina; aves machos e fêmeas) com oito tratamentos e 16 repetições de 10 aves. Foram avaliados: metabolizabilidade aparente da matéria seca, Ca e P, energia metabolizável aparente (EMA), peso e resistência óssea, conteúdo de cinzas, Ca e P na tíbia. As variáveis de desempenho não foram afetadas (P > 0,05). O uso de FO grossa aumentou o conteúdo de Ca na tíbia de frangos machos (P < 0,001), e a relação Ca:P de 2,0:1 aumentou o conteúdo de cinzas e aprimorou resistência óssea em ambos os sexos (P < 0,001), porém reduziu P na tíbia dos machos (P < 0,05); frangos machos também tiveram ossos mais pesados e maior conteúdo de cinzas do que fêmeas (P < 0,05). A metabolizabilidade de Ca foi melhorada com FO grossa, enquanto a metabolizabilidade da matéria seca, P, e EMA não foram afetadas (P > 0,05). Conclui-se que as dietas com relação Ca:P de 2,0:1 e com FO grossa resultaram em melhor composição mineral óssea - particularmente em frangos machos - e a FO grossa melhorou a metabolizabilidade de Ca independentemente da relação Ca:P ou do gênero das aves.

ABSTRACT: The effects of Ca:P total ratio and particle size of oyster shell meal (OSM) were evaluated in broiler diets. In Experiment 1, 800 broilers (22-42 days old) were distributed in a 2×2 factorial design, with two Ca:P ratios (1.7 and 2.0:1) and two OSM particle sizes (coarse = 1,354 µm and fine = 428 µm), totaling four treatments with 10 repetitions with 20 broilers. Feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio were calculated. In Experiment 2, 1,280 broilers were distributed in a 2×2×2 factorial design (1.7 and 2.0:1 Ca:P ratios; coarse and fine OSM; male and female broilers), with eight treatments and 16 repetitions with 10 broilers. Apparent metabolizability of dry matter, Ca, P, and apparent metabolizable energy (AME), as well as bone resistance, bone weight, ash, Ca, and P content in the tibia were assessed. Growth performance was not affected (P > 0.05). Coarse OSM increased tibia Ca content in male broilers (P < 0.001), and higher Ca:P ratio improved bone ash and bone resistance in both sexes (P < 0.001), but reduced P content in male broilers (P < 0.05); male broilers displayed heavier bones with higher ash content than females (P < 0.05). Metabolizability of Ca was improved with coarse OSM (P < 0.05); whereas metabolizability of DM, P, and AME was not affected (P > 0.05). In conclusion, diets with a Ca:P total ratio of 2.0:1 containing coarser OSM improved bone mineral composition, particularly in male broilers, and coarse OSM improved the metabolizability of Ca in broilers regardless of the Ca:P total ratio or broiler sex.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes tamanhos de partícula de farelo de soja, em dietas fareladas e peletizadas, no desempenho de frangos de corte. Foram avaliados 1.440 pintos de corte machos da linhagem Cobb500, com 1 a 35 dias de idade. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2x4, com duas formas físicas da dieta e quatro granulometrias de farelo de soja (625, 775, 1.053 e 1.406 μm), tendo totalizado oito tratamentos, com nove repetições com 20 aves cada uma. Foram avaliados consumo de ração, ganho de peso e conversão alimentar. Houve interação significativa entre as formas físicas das dietas e o tamanho das partículas do farelo de soja. De 1 a 21 dias de idade, os menores valores de consumo de ração e ganho de peso foram obtidos com a dieta farelada contendo partículas do farelo de soja de 1.406 μm. Já de 1 a 35 dias de idade, o maior ganho de peso é alcançado quando os frangos são alimentados com dietas peletizadas com tamanho de particula do farelo de soja de 1.406 μm.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different soybean meal particle sizes in pelleted or mash diets on broiler performance. A total of 1,440 male Cobb500 broilers, with 1 to 35 days of age, were evaluated. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2x4 factorial arrangement, consisting of two feed physical forms and four soybean meal particle sizes (625, 775, 1,053, and 1,406 μm), totaling eight treatments, with nine replicates of 20 birds each. Feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio were evaluated. There was a significant interaction between diet physical form and soybean meal particle size. From 1 to 21 days of age, the lowest feed intake and weight gain values were obtained with the mash diet containing 1,406 μm soybean meal particle size. From 1 to 35 days of age, the greatest weight gain is achieved when broilers are fed the pelleted diet with 1,406 μm soybean meal particle size.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso de associações enzimáticas em rações, com diferentes matrizes nutricionais, para poedeiras criadas em sistema “cage-free” alternativo. O experimento foi realizado com 800 poedeiras Isa Brown de 24-30 semanas de idade, distribuídas em arranjo fatorial 2x2, com duas associações de enzimas (fitase e xilanase) e duas matrizes nutricionais (convencional e supervalorizada). Os tratamentos foram: T1, fitase (450 FTU por kilogram) + xilanase (12.000 BXU por kilogram), com uso da matriz I (100 Kcal kg-1 de energia metabolizável aparente, 0,16% de cálcio, 0,15% de fósforo disponível, 0,03% de sódio e 0,02% de lisina digestível); T2, fitase (1.500 FTU por kilogram) e matriz I; T3, fitase (450 FTU por kilogram) + xilanase (12.000 BXU por kilogram), com uso da matriz II (120 Kcal kg-1 de energia metabolizável aparente, 0,22% de cálcio, 0,20% de fósforo disponível, 0,04 de sódio e 0,05% de lisina digestível); e T4, fitase (1.500 FTU por kilogram) e matriz II. Foram analisadas variáveis de desempenho produtivo e qualidade externa e interna dos ovos. O uso de fitase ou da associação fitase + xilanase, independentemente da matriz nutricional utilizada, conseguiu atender às exigências nutricionais dos animais e manter o seu desempenho produtivo. Porém, a combinação fitase + xilanase e a adoção da matriz I foi mais eficiente.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of enzyme combinations in diets, with different nutritional uplift matrices, for hens raised in an alternative cage-free system. The experiment was carried out with 800 Isa Brown laying hens aged 24-30 weeks, distributed in a 2x2 factorial arrangement, with two combinations of enzymes (phytase and xylanase) and two nutritional matrices (conventional and overvalued uplifts). The treatments were: T1, phytase (450 FTU per kilogram) + xylanase (12,000 BXU per kilogram), using matrix I (100 Kcal kg-1 apparent metabolizable energy, 0.16% calcium, 0.15% available phosphorus, 0.03 sodium, and 0.02% digestible lysine); T2, phytase (1,500 FTU per kilogram) and matrix I; T3, phytase (450 FTU per kilogram) + xylanase (12,000 BXU per kilogram), using matrix II (120 Kcal kg-1 apparent metabolizable energy, 0.22% calcium, 0.20% available phosphorus, 0.04% sodium, and 0.05% digestible lysine); and T4, phytase (1,500 FTU per kilogram) and matrix II. Productive performance variables and external and internal egg quality were analyzed. The use of phytase or of the phytase + xylanase combination, independently of the nutritional matrix used, met the nutrient requirements of the animals and maintained their productive performance. However, the combination phytase + xylanase and the adoption of matrix I was more efficient.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do uso de fitase híbrida, associada ou não com carboidrases, em dietas para frangos, com reduções nutricionais de cálcio, fósforo disponível e energia metabolizável, sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes e a qualidade óssea em frangos de corte. Um total de 1.875 frangos foi distribuído em cinco tratamentos, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 15 repetições de 25 frangos cada uma. Os tratamentos consistiram de uma dieta controle positivo (T1) e de quatro controles negativos (T2 a T5): T1, dieta basal (DB) de milho e farelo de soja; T2 e T3, DBs com reduções de 70 e 100 kcal kg-1 de energia metabolizável, respectivamente, e ambas com reduções de 0,16% de Ca e 0,15% de fósforo disponível; e T4 e T5, DBs com as mesmas reduções nutricionais, mas com a adição de enzimas, ou seja, T4 = T2 + 500 unidades de fitase (FTU) por quilograma e T5 = T3 + 500 FTU kg-1 + 560 unidades de xilanase (TXU) por quilograma + 250 unidades de glucanase (TGU) por quilograma. O uso de 500 FTU kg-1 de fitase híbrida em rações peletizadas com milho e farelo de soja permite bom desempenho digestivo por frangos de corte e substitui a energia metabolizável aparente corrigida por nitrogênio a 70 kcal kg-1, bem como 0,16% de Ca e 0,15% de P disponível.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the use of hybrid phytase, alone or combined with carbohydrases, in poultry diets with nutritional reductions of calcium, available phosphorus, and metabolizable energy on the nutrient digestibility and bone quality of broiler chickens. A total of 1,875 broilers were distributed in five treatments in a completely randomized design, with 15 replicates of 25 chickens each. The treatments consisted of a positive control feed (T1) and of four negative controls (T2 to T5): T1, basal diet (BD) with corn and soybean; T2 and T3, BDs with reductions of 70 and 100 kcal kg-1 metabolizable energy, respectively, and both with reductions of 0.16% Ca and 0.15% available P; and T4 and T5, BDs with the same nutritional reductions, but supplemented with enzymes, i.e., T4 = T2 + 500 phytase units (FTU) per kilogram and T5 = T3 + 500 FTU kg-1 + 560 xylanase units (TXU) per kilogram + 250 glucanase units (TGU) per kilogram. The use of 500 FTU kg-1 hybrid phytase in pelleted corn-soybean meal diets allows a good digestive performance by broilers and replaces the nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy at 70 kcal kg-1, as well as 0.16% Ca and 0.15% available P.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of using 500 FTU/kg of hybrid phytase (created from three bacteria - Natuphos E), with or without xylanase and glucanase (560 TXU/kg; 250 TGU/kg) - Natugrain TS, in corn and soybean meal-based diets, with nutritional reductions in metabolizable energy (ME), Ca, and available phosphorus (AP), on performance parameters and production costs in broiler chickens. The 1875chickens were housed in boxes and distributed among 5 treatments with 15 replicates of 25 chickens each. The experiment included a positive control (the diet of which met the nutritional requirements of the birds), two negative controls (with ME reductions of 70 and 100 kcal/kg, and fixed reductions in Ca [0.16%] and AP [0.15%]), and two treatments with identical nutritional reductions in addition to enzyme supplementation. The treatments included the following: PC= positive control (basal diet (BD) corn and soybean meal); R_70 = BD with reduction of 70 kcal/kg, Ca and AP;R_100 = BD with reduction of 100 kcal, Ca and AP; R_70 + P =BD with reduction of 70 kcal/kg, Ca and AP + phytase (500 FTU/kg); R_100 + P + XG =BD with reduction of 100 kcal/kg, Ca and AP + phytase (500 FTU/kg) + xylanase (560 TXU/kg) + glucanase (250 TGU/kg). Performance parameters, carcass yield, and production costs (USD/ton chilled carcass) were evaluated. In conclusion, the reductions of 70 kcal/kg, 0.16% Ca, and 0.15% AP did not affect performance in chickens over 42 days, if diets were supplemented with hybrid phytase (500 FTU/kg). Supplementation with hybrid phytase and carbohydrases in diets with reductions of 100 kcal/kg, 0.16% Ca, and 0.15% AP led to lower production costs.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do peso dos leitões ao nascimento e do seu ganho de peso na maternidade sobre seu desempenho na fase de creche (21-61 dias de idade). Quinhentos e trinta e quatro leitões, provenientes de 55 primíparas, foram pesados ao nascimento, no desmame e na saída da creche. Os animais foram distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em três classes de peso ao nascimento (PN) e duas classes de ganho de peso diário (GPD) na maternidade. Os animais com alto PN e baixo GPD na maternidade desmamaram 0,2kg mais leves que os animais com baixo PN e alto GPD na maternidade (P<0,05). Porém, os animais com alto PN e baixo GPD na maternidade saíram da creche 2,10kg mais pesados (P<0,05). A diferença aos 21 dias entre os dois tratamentos (alto e baixo GPD) com animais de baixo PN foi de 1,18kg e passou para 2,20kg ao final da creche (P<0,05). No caso dos animais com médio e alto PN, a diferença ao desmame era de 1,14 e 1,26kg e passou para 0,90 e 0,70kg na saída da creche (P<0,05), respectivamente. Leitões com peso ao nascimento entre 1,25 e 2,30kg, com baixo ganho de peso diário na maternidade, apresentaram efeito compensatório parcial no ganho de peso diário durante a creche.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effect of birth weight and weight gain during the suckling phase on the piglet daily weight gain during the nursery phase (21-61 days of age). Piglets (n= 534) derived from 55 first-parity sows were weighed at birth, weaning, and end of the nursery phase. The data were analyzed according to a completely randomized experimental design, with three classes of birth weight (BW) and two classes of weight gain during the suckling phase (SDWG). High BW and low SDWG piglets were 0.2kg lighter at weaning than low BW and high SDWG animals (P< 0.05). However, at the end of the nursery phase, this situation was inverted, with high BW and low SDWG piglets 2.20kg heavier (P< 0.05). Low BW and high SDWG piglets were heavier at weaning and at the end of the nursery phase than low BW and low SDWG piglets (P< 0.05). At the same time, intermediate and high BW and low and high SDWG piglets presented body weight differences at weaning (P< 0.05), but not at the end of the nursery phase (P< 0.05). Piglets with 1.25 to 2.30kg BW and low weight gain during suckling presented a partial compensatory growth during the nursery phase.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate different strategies for the oxidative stabilization of rice bran (RB) in the diet of broiler chickens using natural antioxidant additives, synthetic antioxidant additives and heat treatment on performance, breast meat quality and liver fat content and the nutrient digestibility coefficients. Furthermore, the study aimed to evaluate the effects of heat treatment and antioxidants, antioxidant additive treatments, without antioxidants, natural, and synthetic, and to three heat treatments, without heat, dry-heat and moist-heat, after the rice bran was stored for 90 days and then incorporated into the experimental diets. 1080 broilers were arranged in a 3 x 3-factorial randomized design with 10 replicates per treatments. The wet heat treatment of the meal resulted in a higher daily feed intake and body weight at 28 days and better feed conversion than did the meal without heat treatment. No significant interactions were observed between the tested factors on the apparent digestibility of dry matter and ether extract as well as the values of apparent metabolizable energy and apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen. However, there was significant interaction between the tested factors on the nitrogen retention coefficient; the natural antioxidant and dry heat-treated meal combination presented a lower crude protein digestibility coefficient than those without heat treatment. In conclusion, thermal treatment of this bran proved to be more effective as demonstrated by the performance responses of the birds. Broiler chickens reared up to 28 days of age consuming diets containing 6.5% RB stabilized by heat treatment showed better performance, and the use of antioxidants was not necessary.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da substituição do farelo de soja pelo farelo de canola na dieta de frangos de corte sobre o desempenho, a histopatologia hepática, a morfometria da mucosa intestinal e da tiroide. Foram distribuídos 300 pintos com um dia de idade em um delineamento inteiramente causualizado, com níveis crescentes de substituição do farelo de soja pelo farelo de canola (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100%), 6 repetições com 10 aves cada. O ganho de peso diminuiu linearmente (P< 0,05) com níveis crescentes da substituição, em todas as fases. Assim como, a altura das vilosidades no duodeno e jejuno diminuiu linearmente (P< 0,05) em todas as idades avaliadas. O diâmetro do folículo e a altura do epitélio da tireoide aumentaram linearmente conforme aumentou os níveis de farelo de canola (P< 0,05). Da mesma forma, houve um aumento do peso relativo do fígado e do coração, e aparecimento de esteatose hepática nos níveis mais altos de substituição. Em conclusão, a substituição do farelo de soja pelo farelo de canola pode reduzir o desempenho, afetando negativamente a tireoide, o fígado e as características morfométricas no duodeno e jejuno.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing soybean meal with canola meal in broiler diets on performance, liver histopathology, morphometry of the intestinal mucosa and thyroid. One-day-old Cobb chicks (n=300) were distributed in a completely randomized design, with increasing levels of replacement of soybean meal with canola meal (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) and 6 repetitions of 10 birds each. Weight gain decreased linearly (P< 0.05) with increasing levels of inclusion of canola meal, in all stages. Villus height in the duodenum and jejunum linearly decreased (P< 0.05). Follicle diameter and thyroid follicular epithelium height increased linearly with increasing levels of canola meal (P< 0.05). Similarly, there was an increase in relative weight of liver and heart, and liver steatosis in the highest levels of replacement. In conclusion, the replacement of soybean meal with canola meal can reduce performance, adversely affecting the thyroid, liver and the morphometric characteristics in the duodenum and jejunum.

ABSTRACT Broiler energy nutrition has attracted attention due to its economic importance, particularly during the rearing period of 22-42 days of age. There are many evidences that broilers changed their feed intake capacity due to genetic selection, especially when good quality pellets are fed, which suggests that modern broiler strains may achieve good performance when fed low metabolizable energy levels. The objective was to evaluate the energy efficiency, performance parameters, bone parameters, and carcass yield of 22- to 42-d-old broilers fed diets with energy levels below or above their requirements, while maintaining the density of all other nutrients. In total, 900 male broilers were distributed in a randomized block design, with five treatments consisting of five ME levels (2850, 2950, 3050, 3150 and 3250 kcal/kg). As expected, increasing dietary metabolizable energy reduced feed intake, feed conversion ratio, and energy efficiency. Interestingly, body weight, carcass and cut yields, and bone quality were not affected (p>0.05) by dietary ME levels. In conclusion, 22- to 42-d-old broilers fed pelleted and crumbled diets containing 2,850 to 3,250 kcal ME/kg (14% difference) achieved the same body weight and carcass yield at slaughter. The results show that energy efficiency may provide a more accurate interpretation of broiler performance than feed conversion ratio, and that broilers are able to change their feed intake, indicating an opportunity to improve their nutritional management.

RESUMO: A ingestão de Senecio spp. (maria-mole) é, possivelmente, a principal causa de morte de bovinos por agentes tóxicos nas regiões central e sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Ao considerar a limitação de informações acerca dessa condição no Oeste do Rio Grande do Sul, esse trabalho objetiva descrever os principais aspectos epidemiológicos e clínico-patológicos da seneciose em bovinos nessa região. O estudo foi realizado por meio da aplicação de questionários em 16 propriedades rurais de municípios da região que apresentaram casos suspeitos da intoxicação em bovinos, de agosto de 2011 a março de 2014. Durante as visitas as propriedades foram coletadas plantas do gênero Senecio para identificação botânica, bem como se procedeu a coleta de fragmentos de fígado através de biópsia transtorácica para confirmação da intoxicação. As espécies de Senecio mais frequentes nas propriedades foram S. brasiliensis e S. heterotrichius. De um total de 88 bovinos, de nove propriedades distintas, que apresentaram falha no ganho de peso, 69 animais (aproximadamente 80%) foram positivos para seneciose crônica por apresentarem lesões características da intoxicação, tais como fibrose periportal (78% dos casos), megalocitose (76% dos casos) e proliferação de ductos biliares (68% dos casos), classificadas entre discretas e acentuadas. O trabalho confirmou a ocorrência da doença, mesmo em bovinos sem sinais clínicos evidentes. Os resultados obtidos nessas avaliações foram fundamentais para orientar proprietários e técnicos quanto às principais características da doença e às formas de controle a serem adotadas. O emprego da biópsia hepática possibilitou o diagnóstico precoce da intoxicação e auxiliou os criadores quanto ao descarte mais criterioso de bovinos e a real situação da intoxicação no rebanho, minimizando as perdas econômicas.

ABSTRACT: The ingestion of Senecio spp. (ragwort) is perhaps the leading cause of death of cattle in central and southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Considering the limited information about this condition in the Western region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, this paper describes main epidemiological clinical and pathological aspects of seneciosis in cattle. The assessments were made through questionnaires on 16 rural properties which had suspected cases of poisoning in cattle, from August 2011 to March 2014. During the visits were evaluated epidemiological aspects of poisoning and performed sample collection of Senecio plants for botanical identification, as well as collection of liver samples using transthoracic biopsy for confirmation of the poisoning. Senecio species most common on farms were S. brasiliensis and S. heterotrichius. From 88 cattle that failed to thrive on nine different farms, 69 animals (about 80%) were positive for chronic seneciosis with periportal fibrosis (78% of cases), megalocytosis (76% of cases) and with bile duct proliferation (68% of cases). Lesions were classified as mild, moderate or marked. The current study confirms the occurrence of this poisoning, even in cattle without evident clinical signs. The use of liver biopsy enabled the early diagnosis of poisoning and helped farmers carefully to dispose affectd cattle, as well as to recognize the real situation of poisoning in the herd and minimize economic losses.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a digestibilidade e os efeitos imunomoduladores de dietas suplementadas com luteína em cães. Dezesseis cães adultos foram distribuídos em dois grupos (controle e teste), em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Os cães foram alimentados durante 120 dias com dietas iso-nutritivas, diferindo apenasna inclusão de 45g de luteína/kg na dieta do grupo teste. As amostras de sangue foram colhidas no início e no final do período experimental para avaliar o total de linfócitos, o índice de proliferação de linfócitos e a contagem de linfócitos CD4 + e CD8 +. Para avaliar a digestibilidade aparente da dieta, os cães foram alojados em gaiolas metabólicas por dez dias (cinco dias de adaptação e cinco para coleta total de fezes). Os coeficientes de digestibilidade aparente não foram diferentes entre cães do grupo controle e os alimentados com luteína. A suplementação dietética com luteína não influenciou a contagem de linfócitos totais ou o índice de proliferação de linfócitos, mas resultou em número de linfócitos CD4 + e CD8 + mais elevadas. A suplementação de luteína não afeta a digestibilidade da dieta ou o índice de proliferação de linfócitos em cães. No entanto, aumenta as concentrações dos subtipos CD4 + e CD8 + de linfócitos T.

ABSTRACT: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the digestibility and the immunomodulatory effects of diets supplemented with lutein in dogs. Sixteen adult dogs were distributed in two groups (control and test) in a completely randomized design. Dogs were fed for 120 days with iso-nutritive diets, which only difference was the inclusion of 45g lutein/kg in the diet fed to the test group. Blood samples were collected in the beginning and at the end of the experimental period to evaluate total lymphocyte, lymphocyte proliferation index, and CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte counts. In order to evaluate apparent diet digestibility, dogs were housed in metabolic cages for ten days (five days of adaptation and five for faeces total collection). Coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility were not different between dogs in the control and the lutein-fed groups. Lutein dietary supplementation did not influence total lymphocyte or lymphocyte proliferation index, but resulted in higher CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocyte numbers. Lutein supplementation did not affect diet digestibility or lymphocyte proliferation index in dogs. However, it increases the concentrations of CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocyte subtypes.
