RESUMEN La eficiencia de absorción, translocación y control satisfactorio de malezas pueden ser afectados por el lugar de aplicación del herbicida. Sin embargo, durante la recolección de cultivos previos a la soya, el corte realizado por la cosechadora en la yerba carnicera dificulta el manejo de cultivos en pre-siembra al limitar el área foliar de absorción. Se realizaron experimentos para evaluar la eficiencia del control y el potencial de translocación de saflufenacil en plantas de yerba carnicera en diferentes condiciones. El primer experimento se organizó en esquema factorial 2x10. El factor A corresponde a la integridad de la hoja y el factor B corresponde a los diferentes niveles de daño y aplicación de saflufenacil. El control de Conyza se evaluó a los 7, 14 y 21 días después del tratamiento herbicida (DAT), y el peso seco a los 21 DAT. El experimento II consistió en aplicar saflufenacil a diferentes estructuras de Conyza, donde se evaluó el porcentaje de área necrótica a 1, 3, 5 y 7 DAT. El control de Conyza obtenido fue superior al 75% en todos tratamientos usando saflufenacil, con mayor control en plantas previamente defoliadas. La aplicación de saflufenacil en plantas de 10 y 20 cm fue eficaz en todos los tratamientos. Además, saflufenacil aplicado en el tallo viejo mostró un área necrótica mayor, mientras la aplicación en el sitio del corte generó como resultado un área menos necrótica. La translocación de saflufenacil se da através del xilema y el tallo demostrando ser el elemento a través del cual se da la absorción del herbicida.

ABSTRACT Efficient herbicide absorption and translocation, and satisfactory weed control can be affected by the site of herbicide application. However, during harvesting of crops of previous soybean sowing, the cutting process made by harvesters on the fleabane may generate a difficult management in pre-sowing of the crop by limiting the leaf area of the absorption of the herbicide. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the control efficiency and translocation potential of saflufenacil in fleabane plants with different leaf and stem conditions. Experiment I was arranged in a 2x10 factorial scheme, with factor A corresponding to leaf integrity, and factor B corresponding to different levels of injury and saflufenacil application. Weed control was evaluated at 7, 14, and 21 days after herbicide treatment (DAT), and dry matter was evaluated at 21 DAT. Experiment II consisted of applying saflufenacil to different fleabane structures, where the percentage of necrotic area was evaluated at 1, 3, 5, and 7 DAT. Fleabane control was higher than 75% in all treatments with saflufenacil application, with greater control in plants previously defoliated. Saflufenacil application on 10 and 20 cm hairy fleabane plants was also efficient in all treatments. Saflufenacil application in old stem showed a larger necrotic area, while application in the site of the cutting resulted in a lower necrotic area. The main pathway for translocation of saflufenacil is via xylem and the stem proved to be the absorption element of the herbicide when leaf area is limited.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar o crescimento e o desenvolvimento da buva (Conyza bonariensis) em razão do acúmulo térmico e do fotoperíodo, em diferentes épocas de semeadura, e propor uma escala para representar os principais estádios de desenvolvimento das plantas. O experimento foi realizado com dez repetições, no período de cultivo 2011/2012. As datas de semeaduras foram: 31/05/2011, 04/07/2011, 03/08/2011, 09/09/2011 e 07/11/2011. A altura de planta (cm) e a fenologia foram avaliadas semanalmente. A duração dos diferentes estádios (dias) e a soma térmica acumulada (°C dia) foram determinadas. A regressão linear mostrou que a altura de plantas relacionou-se à soma térmica acumulada. Independentemente da data de semeadura, a fase vegetativa teve maior duração (em dias e em ºC dia) do que a fase reprodutiva. A semeadura em 07/11/2011 promoveu o encurtamento da fase vegetativa, e o estádio roseta não ocorreu. Houve indução do florescimento em fotoperíodo entre 12,5 e 13,5 horas de luz, independentemente da época de semeadura. Observou-se crescimento mais lento na condição de menor temperatura, em que as plantas acumularam 30,9 e 16,3 °C dia por centímetro de altura, nas semeaduras em 31/05/2011 e 07/11/2011, respectivamente. A escala fenológica prevê adequadamente as fases de desenvolvimento da buva.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to characterize the growth and development of hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) according to thermal accumulation and photoperiod, at different sowing times, and to propose a scale representing the main plant development stages. The experiment was carried out with ten replicates in the 2011/2012 growing season. The sowing dates were: 05/31/2011, 07/04/2011, 08/03/2011, 09/09/2011, and 11/07/2011. Plant height (cm) and phenology were evaluated weekly. The duration of the different stages (days) and thermal time accumulation (°C day) were determined. The linear regression analysis showed that plant height was related to thermal time accumulation. Regardless of the sowing date, the vegetative stage had a longer duration (in days and in ºC day) than the reproductive stage. Sowing on 11/07/2011 promoted the shortening of the vegetative stage, and the rosette stage did not occur. Flowering was induced in the photoperiod between 12.5 and 13.5 hours of light, regardless of the sowing date. Slow growth was observed at lower temperature conditions, when plants accumulated 30.9 and 16.3°C day per centimeter of height for the 05/31/2011 and 11/07/2011 sowing dates, respectively. The phenology scale adequately predicts the development stages of hairy fleabane.

RESUMO: A utilização de cultivares de arroz tolerantes às imidazolinonas possibilita um controle seletivo de arroz-daninho. No entanto, em muitas situações existe a necessidade de adição de herbicidas de outros grupos químicos para aumentar o espectro de controle de plantas daninhas. Neste sentido, saflufenacil apresenta potencial para ser utilizado em mistura com herbicidas imidazolinonas. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da interação dos herbicidas imazapyr+imazapic e saflufenacil em arroz-daninho e capim-arroz; e averiguar os impactos sobre a produtividade do cultivar de arroz irrigado Puitá INTA CL. Para alcançar esses objetivos, foram realizados experimentos em casa de vegetação e a campo em duas estações de cultivo, com os tratamentos herbicidas aplicados separadamente e em misturas de saflufenacil com imazapyr+imazapic. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de saflufenacil não interferiu no controle de arroz-daninho e capim-arroz obtido com imazapyr+imazapic. Os valores D50 de imazapyr+imazapic para o controle de arroz-daninho foram 14,5+5; 9,1+3 e 12,5+4,2 g ha-1 de imazapyr+imazapic para combinações com 0; 3,06 e 6,12 g ha-1 de saflufenacil. No experimento de campo todas doses de imazapyr+imazapic, aplicadas isoladas ou em mistura, proveram níveis de controle de capim-arroz superiores a 90% aos 28 dias após a aplicação dos herbicidas. Além disso, saflufenacil não causou injúrias ou perda de rendimento da cultura do arroz quando misturado com imazapyr+imazapic. O cultivar Puitá INTA CL foi tolerante aos herbicidas testados, sejam aplicados isolados ou em mistura, atingindo uma produtividade de 9.987 Kg ha-1 quando aplicado 42 g ha-1 de saflufenacil mais 147+49 g ha-1 de imazapyr+imazapic.

ABSTRACT: The use of imidazolinone-tolerant rice cultivars allows selective control of weedy rice and barnyardgrass. However, in many situations, there is a need to add herbicides from other chemical groups to increase the spectrum of weed control. In this sense, saflufenacil has the potential to be used in mixture with imidazolinone herbicides. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction effects of the imazapyr+imazapic and saflufenacil herbicides in weedy rice and barnyardgrass and to investigate their impacts on the yield of the irrigated rice cultivar Puitá INTA CL. To reach these aims, greenhouse and field experiments were carried out during two growing seasons, with herbicide treatments sprayed separately and in mixtures of saflufenacil with imazapyr+imazapic. Results showed that saflufenacil did not interfere with control of weedy rice and barnyardgrass obtained with imazapyr+imazapic. The D50 values of imazapyr+imazapic for weedy rice control were 14.5+5, 9.1+3 and 12.5+4.2 g ha-1of imazapyr+imazapic for combinations with 0, 3.06 and 6.12 g ha-1of saflufenacil, respectively. In the field experiments, all doses of imazapyr+imazapic applied isolated or in mixture with saflufenacil provided control levels barnyardgrass above 90% at 28 days after herbicides application. Furthermore, saflufenacil did not cause damage or loss in the yield of the rice crop when mixed with imazapyr+imazapic. The Puitá INTA CL rice cultivar was tolerant of the tested herbicides, whether applied alone or in mixture, reaching grain yield of 9.987 kg ha-1 when applied 42 g ha-1 of saflufenacil plus 147+49 g ha-1 of imazapyr+imazapic.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi modelar a competição de arroz-daninho (Oryza sativa) e capim-arroz (Echinochloa spp.) com o arroz irrigado por inundação e introduzi-la como um submodelo no modelo SimulArroz. A competição das duas ervas daninhas com o arroz irrigado foi modelada com o uso da equação da hipérbole retangular. Os coeficientes “i” e “a” da hipérbole retangular referentes a cada erva foram obtidos na literatura e em experimentos de campo conduzidos no Rio Grande do Sul. No SimulArroz, a perda de produtividade foi aplicada para penalizar a produtividade nos três níveis tecnológicos (alto, médio e baixo) para maturidade fisiológica. Para o arroz-daninho, os valores do coeficiente imédio, para os níveis tecnológicos alto, médio e baixo, foram 1,04, 1,50 e 3,57, respectivamente, e, para o capim-arroz, foram 4,70, 10,49 e 15,51, respectivamente. O coeficiente “a” foi 100 para o arroz-daninho, e o amédio, para o capim-arroz, foi 101,63, 104,92, 96,88 para os níveis tecnológicos alto, médio e baixo, respectivamente. A abordagem de perda de produtividade foi adequada para modelar a competição de arroz-daninho e capim-arroz com o arroz irrigado. O submodelo de perda de produtividade pela competição de arroz-daninho e capim-arroz com o arroz irrigado melhora a capacidade preditiva do modelo SimulArroz.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to model weedy rice (Oryza sativa) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa spp.) competition with flood-irrigated rice, introducing it as a submodule into the SimulArroz model. The competition of both weeds with irrigated rice was modeled using the rectangular hyperbola equation. The “i” and “a” coefficients of the rectangular hyperbola for each of these weeds were obtained from the literature and from field experiments carried out in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In SimulArroz, yield loss was applied to penalize yield in all three technological levels (high, medium, and low) of physiological maturity. For weedy rice, the coefficient values of imean for the high, medium, and low technological levels were 1.04, 1.50, and 3.57 respectively, and, for barnyard grass, 4.70, 10.49, and 15.51 respectively. Coefficient “a” was 100 for weedy rice, and amean values for barnyard grass were 101.63, 104.92, and 96.88 for the high, medium, and low levels, respectively. The yield loss approach was suitable to model the competition of weedy rice and barnyard grass with irrigated rice. The submodule yield loss caused by the competition of weedy rice and barnyard grass with irrigated rice improves the predictive capacity of the SimulArroz model.

RESUMOA rotação de herbicidas é o principal método de prevenção e manejo da resistência de plantas daninhas a herbicidas. Porém, além de eficientes, os herbicidas devem ser seletivos às culturas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a seletividade de herbicidas de uso potencial para o controle de buva sobre aveia branca, aveia comum, azevém comum e azevém tetraploide. Os experimentos foram organizados em blocos ao acaso, em esquema bifatorial, onde o fator A foi formado por herbicidas e o fator B pelas doses X e 2X dos herbicidas, em que a dose X corresponde à dose indicada de ingrediente ativo (i.a.). Os tratamentos avaliados foram: 2,4-D amina (806 e 1612 g i.a. ha-1); metsulfuron-methyl (2,4 e 4,8 g i.a. ha-1); chlorimuron-ethyl (20 e 40 g i.a. ha-1); imazethapyr (350 e 700 g i.a. ha-1); diclosulam (16,8 e 33,6 g i.a. ha-1); saflufenacil (35 e 70 g i.a. ha-1) e flumioxazin (50 e 100 g i.a. ha-1), além da testemunha (sem herbicida). Com exceção do herbicida imazethapyr, os demais foram seletivos à aveia branca, independentemente das doses avaliadas. Os herbicidas 2,4-D, diclosulam, saflufenacil e flumioxazin foram seletivos à cultura da aveia comum, quando aplicados na menor dose avaliada, sendo alternativas para o manejo de buva durante o inverno. O herbicida metsulfuron-methyl apresentou efeito tóxico sobre o azevém comum, diminuindo a massa de matéria seca da parte aérea (MMSPA). Para o azevém tetraploide, excetuando o imazethapyr e a maior dose de flumioxazin, os demais tratamentos mostraram-se seletivos. Embora alguns tratamentos tenham proporcionado sintomas de fitointoxicação, isso não refletiu negativamente na produção de MMSPA, evidenciando a capacidade de recuperação das plantas.

ABSTRACTThe rotation of herbicides is the main method used in the prevention and management of herbicide-resistant weeds. However, in addition to being efficient, herbicides should also be crop selective. The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of herbicides with potential use in the control of hairy fleabane, to white oats, common oats, common ryegrass and tetraploid ryegrass. The experiments were arranged in a randomised-block design, in a bi-factorial scheme, with factor A comprising the herbicides, and factor B the herbicide doses X and 2X, where X is the recommended dose of the active ingredient (a.i.). The treatments to be evaluated were: 2,4-D amine (806 and 1,612 g a.i. ha-1); metsulfuron-methyl (2.4 and 4.8 g a.i. ha-1); chlorimuron-ethyl (20 and 40 g a.i. ha-1); imazethapyr (350 and 700 g a.i. ha-1); diclosulam (16.8 and 33.6 g a.i. ha-1); saflufenacil (35 and 70 g a.i. ha-1) and flumioxazin (50 and 100 g a.i. ha-1), as well as the control (no herbicide). Except for the herbicide imazethapyr, the other herbicides were selective to white oats, regardless of the dose. The herbicides 2,4-D, diclosulam, saflufenacil and flumioxazin were selective to common oats when applied at the lowest dose tested, being alternatives in the management of hairy fleabane during the winter. The herbicide metsulfuron-methyl had a toxic effect on common ryegrass, reducing shoot dry matter weight (SDW). Except for imazethapyr and the highest dose of flumioxazin, the remaining treatments were selective to tetraploid ryegrass. Although some treatments produced symptoms of phytotoxicity, this did not reflect negatively on the production of SDW, demonstrating the resilience of the plants.

RESUMO No Brasil, a buva destaca-se entre as principais plantas daninhas da cultura da soja, devido à sua agressividade e resistência ao glifosato. Dessa forma, para evitar a seleção de populações resistentes ao herbicida glifosato, o uso de outros herbicidas tornou-se fundamental para o manejo dessa planta daninha. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a eficiência de controle dos herbicidas glifosato e saflufenacil em plantas de buva (Conyza bonariensis), bem como o tipo de interação da combinação desses herbicidas no controle de buva resistente a glifosato. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos por combinações de doses de glifosato (0 g ha-1; 270 g ha-1; 540 g ha-1; 1.080 g ha-1; 2.160 g ha-1; 4.320 g ha-1; 8.640 g ha-1; 17.280 g ha-1) e saflufenacil (0 g ha-1; 0,55 g ha-1; 1,09 g ha-1; 2,18 g ha-1; 4,37 g ha-1; 8,75 g ha-1; 17,5 g ha-1; 35 g ha-1), formando seis curvas de dose-resposta. Houve efeito sinérgico entre os herbicidas glifosato e saflufenacil para o controle de buva resistente ao glifosato, sendo a mistura considerada eficiente para o biótipo estudado. Além disso, a adição de glifosato (540 g ha-1) ao herbicida saflufenacil (35 g ha-1) preveniu a ocorrência de rebrote e a dispersão de novas sementes de buva, o que não ocorre em plantas tratadas apenas com saflufenacil.

ABSTRACT In Brazil, hairy fleabane stands out among the main weeds of soybean crops, due to its aggressiveness and resistance to glyphosate. Thus, to avoid the selection of resistant populations to the glyphosate herbicide, the use of other herbicides has become critical to the management of this weed. This study aimed to evaluate the control efficiency of glyphosate and saflufenacil herbicides in hairy fleabane plants (Conyza bonariensis), as well as the type of interaction of the combination of those herbicides for controlling glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane. A randomized blocks design, with four replications, was used. Treatments consisted of glyphosate doses (0 g ha-1; 270 g ha-1; 540 g ha-1; 1,080 g ha-1; 2,160 g ha-1; 4,320 g ha-1; 8,640 g ha-1; 17,280 g ha-1) combined with saflufenacil (0 g ha-1; 0.55 g ha-1; 1.09 g ha-1; 2.18 g ha-1; 4.37 g ha-1; 8.75 g ha-1; 17.5 g ha-1; 35 g ha-1), making six dose-response curves. A synergistic effect was observed between the glyphosate and saflufenacil herbicides for controlling the glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane, being the mixture considered efficient for the biotype studied. Furthermore, the addition of glyphosate (540 g ha-1) to the saflufenacil herbicide (35 g ha-1) prevented the occurrence of regrowth and the dispersion of new hairy fleabane seeds, what does not occur in plants treated exclusively with saflufenacil.

A utilização do herbicida glyphosate para o controle químico das espécies de gramas-boiadeiras nas lavouras orizícolas não tem se mostrado eficiente. Nesse contexto, a investigação do controle dessas espécies com o glyphosate torna-se de fundamental importância, uma vez que não estão disponíveis no mercado herbicidas seletivos para o controle dessas em pós-emergência na cultura do arroz irrigado. Em vista do exposto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a suscetibilidade das gramas-boiadeiras a diferentes formulações de glyphosate. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos em casa de vegetação em esquema fatorial. No primeiro experimento, o fator A constituiu-se de duas formulações de glyphosate (sal potássico e isopropilamina) e o fator B de nove doses dos herbicidas (zero; 175; 350; 700; 1400; 2800; 5600; 11200; 22400g e.a. ha-1). No segundo experimento, o fator A constituiu-se de duas espécies de gramas-boiadeiras (Leersia hexandra e Luziola peruviana), o fator B de três formulações do glyphosate (sal amônio, potássico e isopropilamina) e o fator C de nove doses dos herbicidas (zero; 87,5; 175; 350; 700; 1400; 2800; 5600; 11200g e.a. ha-1). Com base nos resultados obtidos, foi possível observar que as espécies apresentaram diferença de suscetibilidade ao herbicida glyphosate. Além disso, Leersia hexandra foi mais sensível em comparação a Luziola peruviana. As formulações de glyphosate influenciaram na suscetibilidade das espécies ao controle, sendo que, Roundup Transorb R® e Roundup Ultra® proporcionam melhor controle das espécies de gramas-boiadeiras.

The use of glyphosate to chemical control of Cutgrass and Peruvian Watergrass with the use of non-selective herbicides has not been efficient. In this context, the investigation of chemical control of these species to glyphosate is very important, since there are not available commercially selective herbicides to control these species in post-emergence of irrigated rice. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of Cutgrass and Peruvian Watergrass to different formulations of glyphosate. Two factorial experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in the first the A factor were two formulations of glyhposate (potassium and isopropylamine salt) and the B factor were nine doses of the herbicide (zero; 175; 350; 700; 1400; 2800; 5600; 11200; 22400g a.e. ha-1). In the second experiment, the A factor were two species (Leersia hexandra and Luziola peruviana), the B factor were three formulations of glyphosate (amoniun, potassium e isopropylamine salt) and the C factor were nine doses of herbicides (zero; 87,5; 175; 350; 700; 1400; 2800; 5600; 11200g a.e. ha-1). Based on the results obtained, it was observed that these species exhibit differential susceptibility to glyphosate. Moreover, Leersia hexandra was more sensitive when compared to Luziola peruviana. Glyphosate formulation influenced control efficiency, where Transorb Roundup R® and Roundup Ultra® provided the best control of the two species.

O malmequer-do-campo (Aspilia montevidensis) é uma planta herbácea perene, nativa do Sul e Sudeste do Brasil, cuja biologia tem sido pouco estudada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar a temperatura base, o plastocrono e o número final de nós de A. montevidensis. Para tanto, foi conduzido um experimento em Santa Maria, RS, com seis épocas de cultivo (20/12/2005, 14/02/2006, 06/03/2006, 04/04/2006, 05/05/2006 e 08/06/2006) no delineamento inteiramente casualizado. A unidade experimental foi uma planta cultivada em vasos preenchidos com substrato comercial. O número de nós visíveis foi registrado na haste principal e nas hastes laterais de primeira e segunda ordem. A temperatura base de emissão de nós foi estimada pela metodologia do menor Quadrado Médio do Erro. A soma térmica diária foi calculada a partir do transplante e o plastocrono foi estimado para cada haste. A temperatura base estimada para emissão de nós de A. montevidensis foi de 0°C. O plastocrono e o número final de nós variam entre hastes e épocas de cultivo, com os menores valores de plastocrono e maiores valores de número final de nós observados na haste principal.

Yellow calendula (Aspilia montevidensis) is a perenium herbaceous plant native of South and Southeast Brazil that has been little studied about its biology. The objective of this study was to determine the base temperature, the plastochron and the final node number in A. montevidensis. An experiment was conducted in Santa Maria, RS, with six planting dates (12/20/2005, 02/14/2006, 03/06/2006, 04/04/2006, 05/05/2006 and 06/08/2006). The experimental design was completely randomized and the experimental unit was one plant grown in pots filled with commercial substratum. The number of visible nodes were measured on the maim stem and on first and second order lateral branches. The base temperature for node appearance was estimated with the mean square error approach. The daily thermal unit was calculated from transplanting and the plastochron (°C day for the appearance of two successive nodes) was estimated for each stem. The estimated base temperature for node appearance in A. montevidensis was 0°C. Plastochron and final node number (FNN) vary among stems and planting dates, with the lowest plastochron and the greatest FNN on the MS.

Caracterizar o crescimento e desenvolvimento de biótipos de arroz vermelho pode ajudar no seu controle e no melhoramento para aumentar a competitividade do arroz cultivado com esta planta daninha. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar parâmetros de crescimento e desenvolvimento de dois biótipos de arroz vermelho e compará-los com genótipos de arroz irrigado. Desenvolveu-se um experimento de campo em Santa Maria (RS), durante o ano agrícola 2004/2005 com cinco épocas de semeadura. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições no esquema bifatorial (genótipos e épocas de semeadura). A unidade experimental foi um balde de 12 litros com dez plantas. Os genótipos utilizados foram: IRGA 421, IRGA 416, IRGA 417, IRGA 420, BR-IRGA 409, BRS 7 TAIM e EPAGRI 109 (tipo moderno), EEA 406 (tipo tradicional), um híbrido, arroz vermelho casca amarela com arista (AVCAA) e arroz vermelho casca preta com arista (AVCPA). A data dos principais estágios de desenvolvimento da escala de COUNCE, área foliar, comprimento de panícula, estatura de planta, filocrono, número final de folhas no colmo principal e perfilhamento foram avaliados em cinco plantas por balde. Nos biótipos de arroz vermelho geralmente observa-se ciclo de desenvolvimento médio em relação aos genótipos cultivados, sendo o biótipo AVCAA de ciclo mais longo que o biótipo AVCPA. Os biótipos de arroz vermelho tiveram área foliar, estatura, panícula e filocrono maiores que os genótipos modernos de arroz. O perfilhamento dos biótipos de arroz vermelho foi variável e dependente da época de semeadura.

The characterization growth and development of red rice biotypes may help controll strategies, the enhancement of competitiveness of cultivated rice with this weed and breeding programs. The objective of this is study was to quantity some growth and development parameters of two red rice biotypes as compared to irrigated genotypes. A field experiment was carried out at Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, during the 2004/2005 growing season with five sowing dates. The experimental design was a completely randomized with four replication in a two factorial arrangement (genotypes and sowing dates). The experimental unity was a 12 L pot with 10 plants. The genotypes used were: IRGA 421, IRGA 416, IRGA 417, IRGA 420, BR-IRGA 409, BRS 7 TAIM, EPAGRI 109, EEA 406, a hybrid, and two red rice biotypes (awned yellowhull-AVCAA, and awned blackhull-AVCPA). The date of major developmental stages in the COUNCE scale, leaf area, panicle length, plant height, phyllochron, main culm final leaf number, and tillering were measured in five plants per pot. Red rice biotypes usually had an intermediate developmental cycle compared to cultivated rice genotypes, with AVCAA having a longer cycle than AVCPA. Red rice biotypes had greater leaf area, greater height, greater panicle length and greater phyllochron, than modern rice genotypes. Tillering of red rice varied according to the sowing date.

Herbicidas inibidores do transporte de elétrons na fotossíntese geram estresse oxidativo. Esse estresse normalmente é amenizado pela ação dos carotenóides que dissipam a energia acumulada na forma de calor. Assim, hipotetiza-se que misturas entre herbicidas inibidores do transporte de elétrons, em nível do fotossistema II, e inibidores da síntese de carotenóides possam resultar em sinergismo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a existência de sinergismo em misturas com herbicidas pertencentes aos dois mecanismos de ação acima mencionados. Para tanto, foram conduzidos dois experimentos: um, com a cultura do milho, nos EUA, em 1998; e outro com cultura da soja, no Brasil, em 1998/99. No experimento com milho, testou-se isoxaflutole nas doses de 0 e 52,5g ha-1 e atrazine nas doses de 0 e 840g ha-1, isolados e em mistura. No experimento com soja, testou-se metribuzin, nas doses de 0 e 280g ha-1, e clomazone, nas doses de 0 e 560g ha-1, isolados e em mistura, bem como tratamentos adicionais isolados de metribuzin 560g ha-1, clomazone 1.120g ha-1 e testemunha capinada. Na cultura do milho, foram avaliadas as densidades de Abutilon theophrasti (ABUTH), Ipomoea hederacea (IPOHE) e Amaranthus retroflexus (AMARE) aos 52 dias após a aplicação dos herbicidas (DAA) e o rendimento de grãos de milho. Na cultura da soja, foram avaliadas aos 55 DAA, a porcentagem de cobertura e controle de Bidens pilosa (BIDPI), sua densidade aos 30 e 55 DAA, além de massa seca, área foliar e rendimento de grãos de soja. Os resultados indicaram a ocorrência de antagonismo entre os herbicidas, no controle de ABUTH e IPOHE, mas sinergismo entre os mesmos, quando se considera o rendimento de grãos de milho. Para BIDPI, verificou-se sinergismo entre os herbicidas nos percentuais de cobertura e controle, sem valores conclusivos nas demais variáveis. Conclui-se que, embora seja complexa a comprovação de sinergismo a campo, os resultados indicam, ao menos para uma espécie, a ocorrência de sinergismo na mistura entre inibidores do FSII e da síntese de carotenóides.

Herbicides that inhibit the electron transport on the photosystem II (PSII) generate oxidative stress. This stress normally is attenuated by carotenoids, which dissipate the electron energy as heat. Hence, we hypothesize that mixtures between PSII inhibitors and carotenoid inhibitors can result in synergism. The objective of this work was to verify the existence of synergism in mixtures of herbicides from both mechanisms of action. Two experiments were conducted in 1998-99 growing season, one with corn, in the USA, and another with soybean in Brazil. At the corn trial, the treatments consisted of isoxaflutole at 52.5g ha-1, atrazine at 840g ha-1, the mixture of both herbicides, and a weedy control. At the soybean trial, the treatments consisted of metribuzin at 280g ha-1, clomazone at 560g ha-1, the mixture of both herbicides, with additional isolated treatments of metribuzin at 560g ha-1, clomazone at 1,120g ha-1, a weed-free and a weedy control. At the corn crop, assessment included the densities of Abutilon theophrasti (ABUTH), Ipomoea hederacea (IPOHE) and Amaranthus retroflexus (AMARE) at 52 days after the treatments (DAT); and the corn grain yield. At the soybean crop, assessment included Bidens pilosa (BIDPI) density, at 30 and 55 DAT; BIDPI cover, control, dry matter and leaf area, at 55 DAT; and soybean grain yield. Apparent herbicide antagonism occurred at the ABUTH, AMARE and IPOHE control, however, herbicide synergism was observed in the corn grain yield. BIDPI results demonstrated synergism for weed cover and control. Despite the complexity to demonstrate herbicide synergism in the field, the results indicate, at least to one species, the occurrence of synergism in the mixture between PSII inhibitors and carotenoid inhibitors.

Para avaliar doses do herbicida glyphosate, isolado ou misturado com 2,4-D, na dessecação do campo nativo para semeadura direta de soja, foi conduzido um experimento no compus da UFSM. Os tratamentos foram: glyphosate a 360, 720 e 1080g ha-1 de equivalente ácido, isolado ou em mistura com 200g ha-1 de 2,4-D éster, aspergidos em dois volumes de calda (50 e 200l ha-1), além de testemunha sem controle. A aspersão dos herbicidas ocorreu em 30/10/95 e a semeadura da soja em 27/12/95. Das 57 espécies presentes no campo nativo, as principais foram: Paspalum notatum var. notatum biótipos "C" e "D", Vernonia polyanthes, Vernonia nudiflora, Eryngium horridum e Baccharis trimera. Os resultados mostram que o uso de 2,4-D e a redução do volume de calda de 200 para 50l ha-1 não melhoraram a eficácia de controle do glyphosate, que mostrou controle geral de 48, 73 e 90% para as doses de 360, 720 e 1080g ha-1. O glyphosate mostrou controle ineficiente de V. polyanthes, V. nudiflora e E. horridum, independente da dose ou mistura com 2,4-D, sendo eficiente para B. trimera à 720 e 1080g ha-1. Houve controle do Paspalum de 54, 79 e 93% para o glyphosate à 360, 720 e 1080g ha-1 . O rendimento médio de grãos de soja foi de 1762, 2502, 2690 e 2793 kg ha-1, para testemunha e glyphosate a 360, 720 e 1080g ha-1. Conclui-se que, para semeadura direta de soja sobre campo nativo, a dose de 1080g ha-1 de glyphosate é adequada.

The objective of this study was to evaluate rates of glyphosate herbicide applyed alone or in mixture with 2,4-D ester herbicide, to control nativo pasture before planting soybeans in a no-till system. The following treatments were tested: glyphosate at 360, 720, and 1080g ha-1 of acid equivalent, alone or in mixture with 200g ha-1 of 2,4-D, sprayed at two volumes (50 and 200l ha-1), and unsprayed control. Herbicides were sprayed in 10/30/95 and soybean was seeded in 12/27/95 in study carried out at the Federal University of Santa Maria campus. Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. The main plant species out of the 57 identified were Paspalum notatum var. notatum biotypes "C" and "D", Vernonia nudiflora, Vernonia polyanthes, Eryngium horridum e Baccharis trimera. The reduction in the spray volume from 200 to 50l ha-1 and mixing with 2,4-D did not affect the efficacy of glyphosate, which showed general control of 48, 73, and 90% using 360, 720. and 1080g ha-1. respectively. Glyphosate did not control V. nudiflora, V. polyanthes and E. horridum, but controlled B. trimera at rates of 720 and 1080g ha-1. There were 54, 79, and 93% control of Paspalum spp. using 360, 720, and l080g ha-1 of glyphosate, respectively. Soybeans yields were 1762, 2502, 2690, and 2793 kg ha-1 for unsprayed and 360, 720, and 1080g ha-1 of glyphosate, respectively. It is concluded that for soybean seeding over native pasture, the rate of 1080g ha-1 of glyphosate is adequate.
