Dos 251 cães da Guanabara examinados 34 (13,5%) foram positivos para Isospora. Desses, 19 (7,5%) foram positivos para I. rivolta, 13 (5,2%) para L. canis e 2 (0,7%) para I. bigemina. "Esporocistos livres" de I. rivolta foram eliminados por 9 cães (3,5%). Foi visto uma vez um oocisto do tipo "Caryospora". Infecções cruzadas realizadas com Isospora de cães e gatos tiveram sempre resultados negativos, enquanto que resultados positivos foram obtidos quando oocistos das mesmas espécies, submetidos às mesmas condições, eram inoculados nos seus hospedeiros naturais. Os resultados sugerem que as espécies de Isospora que ocorrem nos gatos são diferentes das do cão.

Feces of 34 dogs out of 251 (13.5%) from guanabara were positive for Isospora. From these 19 (7.5%) were i. rivolta, 13 (5.2%) were I. canis and 2 (0,7) were i. bigemina. "Free-sporocysts" of I. rivolta were eliminated by 9 dogs (3.5%). A "Caryospora-like" oocyst was seen once. Cross-infection experiments performed with Isospora from dogs and cats failed to produce infection while inoculations of these Isospora in their natural hosts succeeded. The results suggest that the species of Isospora occurring in cats are different from those of dogs.

Foi levantada a prevalência de "I. felis" (24,0%), de "I. rivolta" (14,4%) e de infecções mistas (15,2%) em 125 gatos da Guanabara e do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Foi estudado o ciclo endógeno desses coccídios no epitélio intestinal. A "I. felis" se caracteriza pelo seu maior tamanho e pelo maior número de merozoítos e microgametos; e a "I. rivolta" por evoluir freqüentemente junto à lâmina própria, e quando isto não acontece, pelo seu menor tamanho em relação a "I. felis". Não foi conseguida a infecção de 3 cães desmamados e 4 recém-nascidos com as Isospora do gato. De 20 gatos com isosporose, apenas 2 deram reação de Sabin-Feldman positiva (1:16 e 1:64 respectivamente).

In 125 domestic cats from Guanabara and Rio de Janeiro state, Brasil, the following prevalence of Isospora was met: "I. felis", 24.0; "I. rivolta", 14.44%; and infections by both parasites, 15,2%. "I. felis" is characterized by its larger size and by a greater number of merozoites and microgametocytes and by its evolution in the epithelial cells of the intestine between the nuclei and the brush border. "I. rivolta" has a smaller size than "I. felis" and frequently envolves between the nuclei and the basal membrane. The sabin-Feldman rection in 20 cats with isosporosis was negative in 18. One cat had a weakly positive reaction (1:16) an another a positive reaction (1:64). Cat faeces stored in potassium dichromate at 2.5% with "I. felis" and/or "I. rivolta" were twice administered "per os" to seven puppies and didn't produce Isospora infection.

Foi feita uma investigação sobre a ocorrência de P. carinii em 361 roedores, incluindo ratos de esgoto, ratos albinos, camundongos albinos, cobaios e coelhos. Só foram encontrados positivos 4 Rattus norvegicus em 215 examinados (1.8%). Estes resultados estão de acordo com observações feitas nos últimos anos, os quais constrastam com as verificações feitas nos primeiros anos, os quais contrastam com as verificações feitas nos primeiros anos de estudo do P. carinii, quando foram assinalados altos índices infecciosos. Entretanto, em 20 ratos albinos tratados com corticosteróides (betametasona) foram encontrados 8 positivos (40%); e em 20 camundongos albinos, tratados do mesmo modo, foram encontrados 9 positivos (45%). Estes resultados confirmaram o caráter oportunístico do P. carinii no roedores, do mesmo modo como acontece no homem.

A survey was made on the incidence of Pneumocystis carinii in 361 rodents including sewer rats, albino rats, albino mice, guinea-pigs and rabbits. P. carinii was found in 4 of the 215 Rattus norvegicus examined (1,8%). These results accord with recent observations but disagree with investigations made by the researchers who first studied this parasite in the past when high indexes of infection were found. However, in 20 albino rats treated with corticosteroids (betamethazone) we found 8 positive (40%) and in 20 albino mice treated by the same way, 9 were positive for P. carinii (45%). These results confirm the opportunistic character of P. carinii in rodents already well demonstrated in man.

Quatro grupos de 6 gatos (24 gatos) recém-nascidos e desmamados receberam "per os", respectivamente, suspensões de toxoplasmas de camundongos com 3-4 dias de infecção, de 4 amostras de T. gondii. Cada grupo teve um gato testemunha. Nenhum dos gatos de experiência eliminou oocistos atribuíveis a T. gondii, em períodos de observação de 6 a 20 dias; e suas fezes, conservadas 2-4 dais em bicromato de potássio a 2,5% e ministradas "per os" a camundongos, não induziram toxoplasmose nesses roedores. Com exceção dos que eram portadores de Isospora, os gatos não mostraram formas evolutivas de coccídios no epitélio intestinal. Em todos os grupos a infecção toxoplásmica foi comprovada pela positividade da reação de Sabin & Feldman (1:16 a 1:1024); e pelo isolamento de toxoplasmas pela inoculação de triturados dos seus principais órgãos em camundongos indicadores. De um modo geral, os gatos mais crescidos não mostraram sinais de doença, porém os outros, e principalmente os recém-nascidos adoeceram e vários morreram de toxoplasmose sistêmica: esplenite, hepatite, enterite, penumonia e, mais raramente, miocardite e encefalite. Os toxoplasmas foram encontrados em todos esses órgãos e, tamém, nos rins e supra-renais.

Vegetative forms of 4 strains of Toxoplasma from peritoneal fluid of mice with 3-4 days of acute infection were orally administered to 4 groups of 6 newborn and wealing kittens respectivelly. Each group had a control kitten. All kittens were observed for eriods of 6-20 days ans never passed in their faeces oocysts attributabel to T. gondii. On the other hand, their faces after 2-4 days in potassium dichromate at 2.5% inoculated orally in mice didn't produce Toxoplasma infection in these animals; and with exception of the cats that have had spontaneous isosporosis (I. felis and/or I. rivolta) we didn´t see evolutive forms of Coccidia in the intestinal wall of the cats. In all cat groups the toxoplasmic infection was comproved by the positivity of the dye-test (1:16 to 1:1.024) and by the isolation of toxoplasms in indicator mice inoculated with material from cat´s principal organs. Several of the wealing and newborn kittens were diseased and some died of systhemic toxoplasmosis: splenitis, hepatitis, pneumonitis, miocarditis and encephalitis, with numerous parasites.

Como a produção de oocistos pelo T. gondii no gato parece vinculada à forma cística, uma vez que ela não ocorre pela ministração de formas vegetativas (17), cérebros de camundongos e ratos, com infecção crônica de T. gondii, forma ministrados "per os" a um total de 32 gatos. Com uma amostra (TC1) nenhum dos 8 gatos experimentados eliminou oocistos atribuiíveis a T. gondii; e com as outras 3 amostras a produção de oocistos foi de 25% ("pombo") e 37,5% ("sonia" e "AS-28"). Esses resultados forma atribuídos, em parte, à pobreza de cistos nos cérebros ministrados aos gatos; e, em parte, à existência em condições naturais de amostras de "T. gondii" oocistogênicas, paucloocistogênicas e noocistogênicas. Ao contrário dos gatos infectados com formas vegetativas (17), nenhum gato morreu de toxoplasmose; microscopicamente as lesões com toxoplasmas foram de pouca intensidade e o número de reações de Sabin-Feldman (RSF) negativas foi, relativamente, elevado. Foram vistas raras formas evolutivas do T. gondii no epitélio intestinal de um gato, não parasitado por Isospora as quais são menores que as de I. felis e I. rivolta, do mesmo modo que os seus oocistos. Assim como parece não existir imunidade entre as Isospora (I. felis e I. rivolta), também parece não existir imunidade entre estas e o T. gondii. Em 185 gatos examinados, foi encontrado um deles com oocistos de T. gondii em condições naturais (0,54%). É discutida a importância do gato na epidemilogia da toxoplasmose, destacando-se que a descoberta do ciclo sexuado, decisiva para a classificação do parasito, parece não ter tido repercussão semelhante na epidemiologia.

As the production of oocysts by T. gondii in the cat seems to be correlated with the cystic form, once it does not occur when vegetative forms are given to cats, (17), brains of mice and rats with T. gondii chronic infection were orally administered to 32 cats. With TC1 strain none of the eight cats inoculated excreted Toxoplasma-type oocysts. With the 3 other strains the results were the following: "pombo" strain - 25%; "AS-28" strain - 37,5% and "sonia" strain - 37,5%. These results were interpreted partially as a consequence of the scarcity of cysts in the brains adminstered to cats and partially due to the existence in natural conditions of T. gondii strain which may be oocystogenic, paucioocystogenic and anoocystogenic. Diverselly from the results obtained when cats are fed with vegetative forms (17), none of the inoculated animals died on account of toxoplasmosis; microscopically the lesions with toxoplasms were very few and the number of negative RSF was relativelly high. A few evolutive forms of T. gondii were also studied in the gut epithelium of a cat without Isospora and, in the same manner as the oocystes, they are smaller than those of I. felis and I. rivolta. As cross immunity seems not to occur between the species of Isospora (I. felis and I. rivolta) it is possible that the same happens between the last ones and T. gondii. From a total of 185 cats examined only one (0,54%) excreted (in natural conditions) oocysts atributable to T. gondii. The role of the cat in the epidemiology of Toxoplasmosis is discussed emphasizing the fact that the discovery of the sexual cycle was decisive for the classification of the parasite, but was probably not so valuable for the epidemiological studies.

"A refratariedade das galinhas ao T. (S.) cruzi, ocorre desde o nascimento e não é eliminada pela bursectomia hormonal. Noventa e oito pintos de 1 a 15 dias de vida (normais ou tratados com testosterona) inoculados com o T. (S.) cruzi foram negativos. Deste modo, dificilmente a refratariedade poderia ser interpretada como decorrência de um "anticorpo natural", uma vez que a bursectomia provoca uma queda na produção de anticorpos e das gamaglobulinas. Em cerca de 50% de ovos embrionados (normais ou tratados com o hormônio) foram vistos flagelados do 4º ao 12º dia de inoculação, observando-se ninhos de amastigotos em alguns embriões. Os pintos nascidos dos mesmos grupos dos ovos examinados e positivos, foram sistematicamente negativos pelo exame do sangue. Um deles sacrificado horas depois de nascido, mostrou amastigotos no coração, mas esses parasitos pareciam degenerados. Provavelmente, se alguns chegam a evoluir para tripomastigotos, estes são destruídos á medida que as células hospedeiras se rompem, e assim jamais são encontrados no sangue circulante.

It has already been shown that the refractory state of chickens toward "T. (S.) cruzi" appears early at time of hatch. Fifty-four normal newly hatched and inoculated chicks were negative. it has also been verified that this refractory state persists even after hormonal bursectomy (eggs being injected with 2.5 mg of testosterone). Forty-four bursectomized and inoculated newly hatched chicks were negative. If we consider the fact that bursectomy causes a deficiency in the production of antibodies and gammaglobulins, the refractory state seems not to occur on account of a "natural antibody". Inoculations of "T. (S.) cruzi" made in 153 eggs (normal or treated with testosterone) produced infections of variable intensity in about 50% of them. Although chicks newly hatched from the same groups were always negative. As we have some embryos to be positive until the 21st day of incubation it seems probable that some of those not previously examined and from which these chicks were hatched might have been positive too. Nevertheless, all of them have not parasithemia. So, something happens near the time of hatch that turns the organisms of birds an unfavorable environment to the parasites. The most impressive idea is that in several of the positive embryos the parasites found were remainders of the inoculum and resulting of the infection of the chorioallantoic membrane and its surrounding blood vessels. However there is no doubt that in some embryos invasion of tissues by the parasites definetely occured with amastigote multiplication forms specially in the heart and liver. These amastigotes could persist for sometime after hatching but it seems that they degenerated and only excepcionally could accomplish its evolution to trypomastigote forms. And even when this happened the flagellates were destroyed as soon as the host cells burst. Probably that is the reason why they were not met in the peripheral blood. Parasithemia of the embryos results mainly of extracellular multiplication. Epimastigotes in binary division are very frequent.

Neste trabalho os autores apresentam uma revisão da morfologia das gregarinas do gênero Stenophora Labbé, 1899, baseada principalmente em S. juli (Frantzius, 1848) Labbé, 1899. Caracterizam citoquìmicamente os elementos da estrutura nuclear, ficando evidenciado que o corpúsculo nuclear referido por muitos como um cariossomo apresenta reações positivas para o RNA, sendo portanto um nucléolo. O suco nuclear apresenta reações para o DNA pouco intensas, devido as granulações de cromatina se apresentarem muito finas. Fazem referências também à estrutura do nucléolo, que varia com as técnicas empregadas e salientam a necessidade de comparação dêstes resultados com aquêles obtidos com o auxílio da microscopia eletrônica e que são tratados no segundo trabalho desta série.

The present paper consists of a morphological revision of gregarines belonging to the genus Stenophora Labbé, 1899, specially referred to S. juli (Frantzius, 1848) Labbé, 1899. Nuclear compounds were cytochemically characterized and on account of the positive reactions for RNA the corpuscle generally referred as "caryosome" was to be a "nucleole". The finelly divided DNA of the nucleoplasm caused a weak reaction. The structure of the nucleole depends on the technic used. These results must be compared with those obtained with the electronic microscope.
