Abstract An emerging area in schizophrenia research focuses on the impact of immunomodulatory drugs such as melatonin, which have played important roles in many biological systems and functions, and appears to be promising. The objective was to evaluate the effect of melatonin on behavioral parameters in an animal model of schizophrenia. For this, Wistar rats were divided and used in two different protocols. In the prevention protocol, the animals received 1 or 10mg/kg of melatonin or water for 14 days, and between the 8th and 14th day they received ketamine or saline. In the reversal protocol, the opposite occurred. On the 14th day, the animals underwent behavioral tests: locomotor activity and prepulse inhibition task. In both protocols, the results revealed that ketamine had effects on locomotor activity and prepulse inhibition, confirming the validity of ketamine construction as a good animal model of schizophrenia. However, at least at the doses used, melatonin was not able to reverse/prevent ketamine damage. More studies are necessary to evaluate the role of melatonin as an adjuvant treatment in psychiatric disorders.

Resumen La zeolita H-ZSM-5 es ampliamente aplicada en la industria petroquímica como por ejemplo en el proceso sintético de metanol hasta hidrocarburos (methanol to hydrocarbons MTH). La zeolita ZSM-5 es obtenida a través de reactivos y procesos costosos, existiendo pocas rutas alternativas que sean más económicas. En la presente investigación, zeolita H-ZSM-5 fue obtenida a partir de diatomita natural, seguidamente caracterizada, y finalmente probada en la proceso sintético MTH. La diatomita natural fue tratada con ácido sulfúrico para la realización de la síntesis hidrotermal con hidróxido de tetrapropil amonio (TPA-OH). Como resultado, la zeolita H-ZSM-5 obtenida tuvo una relación molar Si/Al de 23, presentó estabilidad térmica alta y sitios ácidos Lowry-Brönsted y Lewis. La aplicación de esta zeolita en la reacción MTH, presentó una conversión de metanol del 88 %. Los productos fueron: dimetil éter (DME) en un 40 %, olefinas (mayoritariamente etileno y propileno) en un 40% y otros en un 20 %. Las condiciones de reacción fueron de: 300°C, 1,2Lmetanol/g cat h a presión atmosférica (0.65 bar). La selectividad de los productos puede ser modificada de tal forma que pueda obtenerse DME de manera preferencial, hasta > 93 %, mediante el cambio de las condiciones de operación (temperatura y velocidad espacial). El uso de diatomita natural como material de partida para la preparación de la zeolita H-ZSM-5 representa una ruta atractiva y merece mayor investigación para su aplicación y desarrollo
Abstract Zeolite H-ZSM-5 is widely applied in the petrochemical industry, such as the synthetic process of methanol to hydrocarbons (methanol to hydrocarbons MTH). ZSM-5 zeolite is currently obtained through reagents and expensive processes, being available only a few cheaper alternative routes. In the present investigation, zeolite H-ZSM-5 was obtained from natural diatomite, then characterized, and finally tested in the synthetic MTH process. The natural diatomite was treated with sulfuric acid to perform hydrothermal synthesis with tetrapropyl ammonium hydroxide (TPA-OH). As a result, the H-ZSM-5 zeolite obtained had a Si / Al molar ratio of 23, it exhibited high thermal stability and showed Lowry-Brönsted and Lewis acid sites. The application of this zeolite in the MTH reaction showed a methanol conversion of 88%. The products were: dimethyl ether (DME) in 40%, olefins (mostly ethylene and propylene) in 40% and others in 20%. The reaction conditions were: 300 ° C, 1.2Lmetanol/g cat h at atmospheric pressure (0.65 bar). The selectivity of the products can be modified in such a way that DME can be obtained preferentially, up to> 93%, by changing the operating conditions (temperature and space velocity). The use of natural diatomite as a starting material for the preparation of the zeolite H-ZSM-5 represents an attractive route and deserves further investigation for its application and development.

Effects of injecting increased doses of vitamins C and E on reproductive parameters of Holstein dairy cattle

Abstract Vitamins C and E have been supplemented separately to improve fertility in cattle. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined injections of increased doses of vitamins C and E on reproductive parameters in dairy cattle. Lactating Holstein cows (n= 44) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: 1) Control: n= 15, cows were not injected with vitamins; 2) VCE3: n= 15, cows received a single intramuscular injection of 3,000 IU of vitamin E before estrus and multiple subcutaneous injections of vitamin C with a total dose of 3,000 mg before and after estrus; 3) VCE6: n= 14, cows were treated as in VCE3, but doses of vitamins C and E were increased to 6,000 mg and 6,000 IU. The reproductive indicators measured were diameter of the preovulatory follicle, time to estrus, area of the corpus luteum, pregnancy rate 35 and 45 d after AI and plasma concentrations of estradiol and progesterone. There was no effect of treatment on any of the evaluated reproductive parameters (P˃0.05), except that the lowest dose of vitamins sustained similar pregnancy rates among treatments, even though they had lower progesterone concentrations (P≤0.05) (19.4 ± 2.66 vs 10.1 ± 2.55 vs 19.2 ± 0.44 ng mL-1 for Control, VCE3 and VCE6, respectively). In conclusion, the supplementation with the highest amount of vitamin C and E (6,000 mg and 6,000 IU versus 3,000 mg and 3,000 IU) does not significantly increase the reproductive parameters measured.
Resumen Las vitaminas C y E se han suplementado por separado para mejorar la fertilidad en el ganado. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de las inyecciones combinadas de dosis aumentadas de vitaminas C y E en parámetros reproductivos del ganado lechero. Las vacas lactantes Holstein (n= 44) se asignaron al azar a uno de tres tratamientos: 1) Testigo: n = 15, las vacas no fueron inyectadas con vitaminas; 2) VCE3: n= 15, recibieron una única inyección intramuscular de 3,000 UI de vitamina E antes del estro y múltiples inyecciones subcutáneas de vitamina C con una dosis total de 3,000 mg antes y después del estro; 3) VCE6: n= 14, las vacas se trataron como en VCE3, pero las dosis de vitaminas C y E se incrementaron a 6,000 mg y 6,000 UI. Los indicadores reproductivos medidos fueron el diámetro del folículo preovulatorio, el tiempo al celo, el área del cuerpo lúteo, la tasa de preñez 35 y 45 días después de la IA y las concentraciones plasmáticas de estradiol y progesterona. No hubo efecto del tratamiento en ninguno de los parámetros reproductivos evaluados (P˃0.05), excepto que la dosis más baja de vitaminas mantuvo tasas de gestación similares entre los tratamientos, aunque tuvieron concentraciones de progesterona más bajas (P≤0.05) (19.4 ± 2.66 vs 10.1 ± 2.55 vs 19.2 ± 0.44 ng mL-1 para los grupos Testigo, VCE3 y VCE6, respectivamente). En conclusión, la suplementación con la mayor cantidad de vitamina C y E (6,000 mg y 6,000 UI frente a 3,000 mg y 3,000 UI) no aumenta significativamente los parámetros reproductivos medidos.

Abstract In this work we investigated the presence, diversity and phylogenetic relationships of genes that confer resistance to arsenic (As) in 37 strains of the genus Bacillus, isolated from microbial mats in hot springs from Araró, Michoacán, Mexico. Specific oligonucleotides were designed for PCR amplification of the genes arsB (arsenite-specific efflux pump) and arsC (arsenite reductase), ACR3 (arsenite transporter) and aoxB (arsenite oxidase) of the genus Bacillus, detecting only the genes arsB and arsC in 21 out of the 37 analyzed strains (56.7% of the total). The Blastx-type analysis showed a high identity (84-100%) with arsenite efflux pumps (ArsB) and arsenate reductase proteins (ArsC) of various strains of the genera Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Psychrobacter and Planococcus. Such analyzes were confirmed through the construction of phylogenies of the arsB and arsC sequences. The detection of the arsB and arsC genes in Bacillus strains was correlated with As hyperresistance values, which corresponded up to 32 and 128 mM of arsenite (III) and arsenate (V), respectively. Finally, the arsB and arsC genes identified in Bacillus strains could be a mechanism of resistance to As in an extreme aquatic environment, such as in Araro’s hot springs .
Resumen En este trabajo investigamos la presencia, diversidad y relaciones filogenéticas de genes asociados a la tolerancia al arsénico (As) en 37 cepas del género Bacillus, aisladas de tapetes microbianos localizados en pozas termales en Araró, Michoacán, México. Se diseñaron oligonucleótidos específicos para la amplificación por PCR de los genes arsB (bomba de expulsión de arsenito) y arsC (arsenato reductasa), ACR3 (transportador de arsenito) y aoxB (arsenito oxidasa) del género Bacillus, detectando únicamente los genes arsB y arsC en 21 de las 37 cepas analizadas (56.7% del total). Los análisis tipo Blastx demuestran una alta identidad (84-100%) con bombas de expulsión de arsenito (ArsB) y proteínas arsenato reductasas (ArsC) de diversas cepas de los géneros Bacillus, Paenibacillus, Psychrobacter y Planococcus. Dichos análisis se confirmaron a través de la construcción de filogenias de los genes arsB y arsC. La detección de los genes arsB y arsC en cepas de Bacillus se correlacionó con valores de hipertolerancia al As, los cuales correspondieron a 32 y 128 mM de arsenito (III) y arsenato (V), respectivamente. Finalmente, los genes arsB y arsC identificados en cepas de Bacillus podrían ser un mecanismo de resistencia al arsénico en un ambiente acuático extremo, como las pozas termales de Araró.

Brucella abortus detected in cheese from the Amazon region: differentiation of a vaccine strain (B19) from the field strain in the states of Pará, Amapá and Rondônia, Brazil

Resumo: A brucelose é uma enfermidade infecto-contagiosa que causa grandes perdas econômicas à cadeia produtiva da carne e do leite, como consequência dos distúrbios reprodutivos nos animais, além de ser uma antropozoonose crônica. O objetivo deste estudo foi detectar DNA de Brucella spp. e fazer a distinção da cepa vacinal (B19) da cepa de infecção de campo. Foram adquiridas 66 amostras de diferentes queijos produzidos e comercializados em três estados pertencentes à Amazônia brasileira: Amapá (05), Pará (55) e Rondônia (06), somando 39 amostras de queijo de vaca e 27 de búfala. Deste total quatro eram produzidas em estabelecimentos com fiscalização de Serviço de Inspeção Federal, nove em estabelecimentos com Serviço de Inspeção Estadual, cinco eram de produção artesanal e as demais 48 amostras eram provenientes de produção informal. O DNA das amostras teste foi obtido por um protocolo de extração e a reação em cadeia pela polimerase foi realizada utilizando os oligoiniciadores B4 e B5 para detectar Brucella spp. e, os oligoiniciadores eri1 e eri2 para diferenciar cepa de infecção a campo da cepa vacinal B19. Os resultados mostraram que 21,21% (14/66) das amostras foram positivas para Brucella spp., destas 21,43% (3/14) foram positivas para B. abortus cepa de campo e 7,14% (1/14) foi identificada como cepa vacinal B19. Concluiu-se que foi possível identificar pela técnica da PCR Brucella spp. em queijos na região amazônica, além de diferenciar as cepas em amostra de B. abortus de infecção a campo ou cepa vacinal B19.
Abstract: Brucellosis is an infectious-contagious disease responsible for significant economic losses to the meat and milk supply chain, because it causes reproductive disorders in animals and is a chronic anthropozoonosis. This study was designed to detect the DNA of Brucella spp. in cheese and to differentiate between a vaccine strain (B19) and the field strain. Sixty-six samples of different cheeses which are produced and marketed in three states of the Brazilian Amazon region (Amapá [5 samples], Pará [55 samples] and Rondônia [6 samples]) were evaluated. Thirty-nine of these samples were from cheeses made from cow's milk, and 27 were from cheeses made from buffalo milk. Four of the 66 samples were from cheeses produced in milk processing plants regulated by the Federal Inspection Service (Serviço de Inspeção Federal); nine of the samples were from cheeses produced in processing plants regulated by the State Inspection Service (Serviço de Inspeção Estadual); five of the samples were from artisanal cheeses; and the remaining 48 samples were from informally produced cheese. DNA was obtained from the samples following a DNA extraction protocol, and PCR was conducted using primers B4 and B5 to detect Brucella spp. Primers eri1 and eri2 were used to differentiate the field strain from the B19 vaccine strain. The results showed that 21.21% (14/66) of the samples were positive for Brucella spp., of which 21.43% (3/14) were positive for the B. abortus field strain, and 7.14% (1/14) were identified as harboring vaccine strain B19. These results demonstrate that it is possible to identify Brucella spp. in cheese from the Amazon region using the PCR technique and to differentiate the B. abortus field strain from the B19 vaccine strain.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

An ethnozoological study was performed in 11 indigenous communities of the municipality of El Fuerte, Sinaloa, México, to describe the use of wild vertebrates. Of the people who used this resource, 53 % belonged to the Mayo-Yoreme people, but only one third still speaks their native tongue. Hunting is carried out only by men, primarily day laborers, who took advantage of 34 wild species, distributed in 21 families and 12 orders, with mammals being the most widely used. Hunting is carried out during most of the year, on weekends and during the first hours of the morning, although also during the night, both on foot and with the help of a vehicle. The main uses were for food, handcrafts and medicinal. The hunt was done primarily in shrubs and agricultural areas. The most frequently used hunting means were sling-shot (fork with a handle with a rubber tied to its ends, to be stretched out and used to shoot small stones), and rifle caliber 022. Of the people, 43.2 % considered the species as regularly abundant, while 18.7 % perceived them as scarce as the result from furtive hunting, deforestation and people's needs. More than 90 % recognized as actions necessary for conservation the following: vigilance, not hunting in abundance and respecting the closed season.
Se realizó un estudio etnozoológico en 11 comunidades indígenas del municipio de El Fuerte, Sinaloa, México, para describir el aprovechamiento de vertebrados silvestres. El 53 % de los que hicieron uso de este recurso pertenecieron al pueblo Mayo-Yoreme, pero solo una tercera parte aún habla su lengua materna. La caza es realizada solo por hombres, repartidos en 21 familias y 12 órdenes, principalmente jornaleros, quienes aprovecharon 34 especies silvestres, siendo los mamíferos los más aprovechado. La caza se realiza la mayor parte del año durante los fines de semana y en las primeras horas de la mañana, aunque también durante la noche; tanto a pie como con apoyo de un vehículo. Los principales usos fueron el alimentario, artesanal y medicinal. La caza se realizó principalmente en matorrales y áreas agrícolas. La resortera (horquilla con mango a cuyos extremos se unen los de una goma para estirarla y disparar piedras pequeñas) y el rifle calibre 022 fueron los medios de caza más utilizados. El 43.2 % consideró las especies como regularmente abundantes, mientras que 18.7 % las percibió escasas como consecuencia de la caza furtiva, la deforestación y las necesidades de las personas. Más de 90 % reconoció como acciones necesarias para la conservación, la vigilancia, no cazar en abundancia, y respeto a la veda.

Kondo and Fano effect in side attached double quantum-dot molecule

Electron tunneling through a double quantum dot molecule side attached to a quantum wire, in the Kondo regime, is studied. The mean-field finite-U slave-boson formalism is used to obtain the solution of the problem. We investigate the many body molecular Kondo state and its interplay with the inter-dot antiferromagnetic correlation as a function of the parameters of the system.

Os hormônios tireoideanos (HTs) são necessários para a diferenciação, crescimento e metabolismo de diversos tecidos de vertebrados. Seus efeitos são mediados pelos receptores do hormônio tireoideano (TRs), membros da superfamília dos receptores nucleares. Estes receptores são fatores de transcrição modulares que se ligam em seqüências específicas do DNA denominadas elementos responsivos ao TR, que são encontrados nos promotores dos genes regulados pelo HT. Os TRs são codificados por dois genes distintos, alfae beta, localizados nos cromossomos 17 e 3, respectivamente. Estas isoformas apresentam diferentes funções e sua expressão é específica para cada tecido. O TR se liga ao DNA como monômero, homodímero ou heterodímero com o receptor de retinóide X (RXR). Além disso, o TR modula a atividade transcricional (repressão ou ativação) através da interação com correpressores e co-ativadores, na ausência e na presença do T3, respectivamente. A compreensão do mecanismo molecular da ação do receptor do hormônio tireoideano e a definição de sua estrutura cristalográfica contribuirão para a aquisição de novos conceitos envolvidos na transcrição e nos distúrbios hormonais presentes nas doenças endócrinas, assim como facilitará o desenho de novas drogas, agonistas ou antagonistas, com grande valor terapêutico.
Thyroid hormones (TH) are involved in normal differentiation, growth, and metabolism in several tissues of all vertebrates. Their actions are mediated by the TH receptors (TRs), members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily. These receptors are transcription factors that bind to DNA on specific sequences, the TR response element (TREs), in promoters of target genes. Two genes encode TRs, alpha e beta, located in chromosomes 17 and 3, respectively. These isoforms show different functions and exhibit a tissue specific expression. TRs function as monomers, homodimers or heterodimers with retinoid X receptor (RXR) and modulate transcription activity (repression or activation) by interacting with co-repressor and co-activators, which associate with TR in the absence or presence of T3, respectively. Understanding the molecular mechanism of TR action and the definition of its crystallographic structure will provide new insights into transcription mechanisms and will facilitate the design of new drugs with greater therapeutic value.
