This thematic issue consists of 14 articles derived from studies of the BRISA birth cohort (Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo and São Luís, State of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil, a socially and economically less developed region). In these more than 40 years of existence, these cohorts have been able to document the increase in women's education, the improvement of health conditions, the creation of a public Unified Health System (SUS) that provides universal and free access to health care, eradication of hunger, and transition of the nutritional status characterized by a decrease in malnutrition rates and an increase in obesity in Brazil. Particularly in reproductive health, the country experienced a significant drop in fertility, a decrease in maternal and child mortality, and an increase in breastfeeding rates. Universal access to prenatal care and hospital delivery was accompanied by an excessive number of cesareans without clinical indication and early-term births and premature births, largely due to scheduled cesareans. Articles with a longitudinal and transversal methodological approach are presented, using structural equation analysis and propensity score, together with multivariate regressions, which gave a robust analytical treatment to articles in this thematic issue.

The transport of myo-inositol is the main mechanism for the maintenance of its high intracellular levels. We aimed to measure the mRNA and protein levels of myo-inositol cotransporters in the sciatic nerve (SN) and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) during experimental diabetes. Streptozotocin-induced (STZ; 4, 8, and 12 weeks; 65 mg/kg; ip) diabetic rats (DB) and age-matched euglycemic (E) rats were used for the analysis of mRNA and protein levels of sodium myo-inositol cotransporters 1, 2 (SMIT1, SMIT2) or H+/myo-inositol cotransporter (HMIT). There was a significant reduction in the mRNA levels for SMIT1 in the SN and DRG (by 36.9 and 31.0%) in the 4-week DB (DB4) group compared to the E group. SMIT2 was not expressed in SN. The mRNA level for SMIT2 was up-regulated only in the DRG in the DB4 group. On the other hand, the protein level of SMIT1 decreased by 42.5, 41.3, and 44.8% in the SN after 4, 8, and 12 weeks of diabetes, respectively. In addition, there was a decrease of 64.3 and 58.0% of HMIT in membrane and cytosolic fractions, respectively, in the SN of the DB4 group. In the DRG, there was an increase of 230 and 86.3% for SMIT1 and HMIT, respectively, in the DB12 group. The levels of the main inositol transporters, SMIT1 and HMIT, were greatly reduced in the SN but not in the DRG. SMIT-1 was selectively reduced in the sciatic nerve during experimental STZ-induced diabetes.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

In order to establish reference values, and to assess the influence of the age factor on the erytrogram of healthy Holstein calves, blood samples from 300 animals were used, spread over 15 experimental groups, according to age, in the first month of life. Variations of the average values for the components of erytrogram were as follows: number of red blood cells (x10(6)/mm³) = 6.68-7.60, packed cell volume (%) = 29.80-33.35, hemoglobin concentration (g/dl) = 9.00-10.43, mean corpuscular volume (fl) = 38.93-47.68, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (pg) = 11.75-14.69, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (%) = 29.53-31.63% and number of reticulocytes (x10³/mm³) = 0.00-11.86. The influence of the age factor proved to be significant for the mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and the number of reticulocytes.

To establish reference values and to assess the influence of age on the leukograms of healthy Holstein calves, blood samples were obtained from 300 animals. These samples were distributed equally (n=20) among 15 experimental groups according to age: birth to 8 hours, 9 to 16 hours, 17 to 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 to 7 days, 8 to 9 days, 10 to 11 days, 12 to 13 days, 14 to 15 days, 16 to 20 days, 21 to 25 days and 26 to 30 days of age. The maximum numbers of leukocytes (9,305.0/mL), segmented neutrophils (6,551.2/mL) and total neutrophils (6,678.3/mL) were noted within the first 8 hours of life, while band neutrophils peaked in number (133.3/mL) between 9 and 16 hours after birth. Meanwhile, the maximum total lymphocyte (4,992.1/µL) and typical lymphocyte (4,686.1/µL) counts occurred between 21 and 25 days, whereas atypical lymphocytes (388.5/µL) reached their maximum number between 26 and 30 days, demonstrating an inversion of the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio over time. Thus, the influence of age on the leukocyte count of the evaluated calves was verified. The release of endogenous corticosteroids during labor or at birth may contribute to this variation in leukograms with age.

The role of nitric oxide (NO) was evaluated by inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), with aminoguanidine (AG) on motility, vigor, and plasmatic membrane integrity of bovine spermatozoa culture after 15, 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300min and on mitochondrial activity and capacitation after 300min, respectively. Different concentrations, 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1M of AG were added during the heparin induced capacitation and sodium nitroprusside (SNP, NO donor-500μM) to the deleterious concentration. The addition of 0.1M of AG diminished progressive motility, spermatic vigor, and membrane integrity (P<0.05). SNP addition to the 0.1M of AG did revert only plasmatic membrane integrity after 300min. Mitochondrial activity was not influenced by addition of AG. Percentage of penetrated oocytes after addition of 0.01 and 0.1M of AG diminished, 20.3 and 100%, respectively, in relation to the control oocytes (P<0.05). However, an increase of 15% was observed when denuded oocytes were used with 0.1M AG treated sperm (P<0.05). It was concluded that the inhibition of NO synthesis with aminoguanidine diminished sperm quality during in vitro capacitation of bovine spermatozoa, except the mitochondrial activity. Only membrane integrity was reverted with the addition of NO to culture medium, suggesting different pathways of NO action on bovine sperm quality during in vitro capacitation.

In this work, the anisotropic etching and the use of silicon rich oxide (SRO) are studied in order to improve the waveguide coplanar (CPW). Experimental results of dry etching of mono-crystalline silicon for application in CPW's using RIE/ICP reactor are presented. The contribution of the physical as much chemical components of dry etching is observed. The reactive gases that are used are Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) mixed with oxygen (O2). For etching the silicon masks of photo-resist and silicon oxide (SiO2) are used, this last one is obtained by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD). Speed of etching from 2.8 to 3.4 µm/min are obtained when using SiO2 as mask.

An enzymatic extract produced by Penicillium restrictum having a high level of lipase activity (17.2 U.g-1) was obtained by solid-state fermentation using babassu cake as substrate. The enzymatic extract was used in the hydrolysis of a dairy wastewater with high fat contents (180, 450, 900 and 1,200 mg.L-1). Different hydrolysis conditions were tested, and it was determined that it should be carried out at a temperature of 35ºC, without agitation, with 10% v/v enzymatic extract and a hydrolysis time of 12 hours. Both crude and hydrolysed effluents were then submitted to an anaerobic biological treatment. It was observed that for the enzymatically pretreated effluent there was a significant improvement in the efficiency of the anaerobic treatment. For the highest fat content tested (1,200 mg.L-1), removal efficiencies of 19 and 80% were attained for crude and hydrolysed effluents, respectively. In addition, a tenfold increase in the removal rate of COD from the hydrolysed effluent (1.87 kg COD.m-3.d-1) was observed in relation to the crude effluent (0.18 kg COD.m-3.d-1). The results obtained in this study illustrate the viability of using a hybrid treatment (enzymatic-biological) for wastewaters having high fat contents.
