Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi aplicar o algoritmo “random forest” (RF) à modelagem do estoque de carbono acima do solo (CAS) de uma floresta tropical, por meio da testagem de três procedimentos de seleção de variáveis: remoção recursiva e algoritmos genéticos (AGs) uniobjetivo e multiobjetivo. Os dados utilizados abrangeram 1.007 parcelas amostradas na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Grande, no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, e 114 variáveis ambientais (climáticas, edáficas, geográficas, de terreno e espectrais). A melhor estratégia de seleção de variáveis – a RF com AG multiobjetivo – chega ao menor erro quadrático de 17,75 Mg ha-1 com apenas quatro variáveis espectrais – índice de umidade por diferença normalizada, textura de correlação do índice de queimada por razão normalizada 2, cobertura arbórea e fluxo de calor latente –, o que representa redução de 96,5% no tamanho do banco de dados. As estratégias de seleção de variáveis ajudam a obter melhor desempenho da RF, ao melhorar a acurácia e reduzir o volume dos dados. Embora a remoção recursiva e o AG multiobjetivo mostrem desempenho semelhante como estratégias de seleção de variáveis, esta último apresenta menor subconjunto de variáveis, com maior precisão. As descobertas deste trabalho destacam a importância do uso de infravermelho próximo, comprimentos de onda curtos e índices de vegetação derivados para a estimativa de CAS baseada em sensoriamento remoto. Os produtos MODIS mostram relação significativa com o estoque de CAS e precisam ser melhor explorados pela comunidade científica para a modelagem deste estoque.

Abstract The objective of this work was to apply the random forest (RF) algorithm to the modelling of the aboveground carbon (AGC) stock of a tropical forest by testing three feature selection procedures – recursive removal and the uniobjective and multiobjective genetic algorithms (GAs). The used database covered 1,007 plots sampled in the Rio Grande watershed, in the state of Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and 114 environmental variables (climatic, edaphic, geographic, terrain, and spectral). The best feature selection strategy – RF with multiobjective GA – reaches the minor root-square error of 17.75 Mg ha-1 with only four spectral variables – normalized difference moisture index, normalized burnratio 2 correlation text ure, treecover, and latent heat flux –, which represents a reduction of 96.5% in the size of the database. Feature selection strategies assist in obtaining a better RF performance, by improving the accuracy and reducing the volume of the data. Although the recursive removal and multiobjective GA showed a similar performance as feature selection strategies, the latter presents the smallest subset of variables, with the highest accuracy. The findings of this study highlight the importance of using near infrared, short wavelengths, and derived vegetation indices for the remote-sense-based estimation of AGC. The MODIS products show a significant relationship with the AGC stock and should be further explored by the scientific community for the modelling of this stock.

ABSTRACT The commercial exploitation of guinea fowl (Numidia meleagris) is a viable alternative for small rural properties in arid and semi-arid regions, as they are rustic birds and capable of withstanding the climatic adversities of these regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pupillary temperature, smaller pupillary diameter, larger pupillary diameter and pupil area of guinea fowl housed in a controlled environment, under two air temperatures: 26 ºC (thermal comfort zone) and 32 ºC (above the thermal comfort zone). The birds were distributed in a completely randomized design, with two treatments (air temperatures) and four replications (experimental box), with twelve birds each. The increase in air temperature resulted in a significant average increase (P < 0.05) of 6.0, 17.9, 18.6 and 38.4%, respectively, in pupillary temperature, smaller pupillary diameter, larger pupillary diameter and pupillary area of birds, being these measurements accurate in evaluation of thermal stress in homeothermic animals.

RESUMO Existe interesse na identificação das melhores cultivares de milho e de feijão-caupi para serem exploradas em monocultivos e em consorciação visando a produção de grãos secos. Visando atender a esse interesse, foram avaliados dois monocultivos de feijão-caupi (variedades tradicionais Corujinha e Sempre Verde), dois monocultivos de milho (híbrido duplo AG 1051 e variedade AL Bandeirante) e quatro consórcios (combinações das variedades de feijão-caupi com as cultivares de milho). Nos consórcios, milho e feijão-caupi ocuparam fileiras de plantas alternadas. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados com seis repetições. O crescimento e o rendimento de grãos foram maiores no híbrido AG 1051 do que na variedade AL Bandeirante, nos monocultivos e nos consórcios. O crescimento e o rendimento de grãos médios do milho foram maiores nos monocultivos do que nos consórcios. Nos consórcios é indiferente usar as variedades Corujinha ou Sempre Verde de feijão-caupi, com qualquer uma das cultivares de milho porque não existiu interação cultivares de milho x cultivares de feijão-caupi. O rendimento de grãos da cultivar Corujinha foi superior ao da cultivar Sempre Verde, em monocultivo. O rendimento médio de grãos dos monocultivos foi superior ao dos consórcios. As duas cultivares de feijão-caupi foram melhores na consorciação com a cultivar de milho AL Bandeirante do que com a cultivar AG 1051. O valor do uso eficiente da terra foi superior à unidade apenas na combinação variedade AL Bandeirante de milho com a variedade de feijão-caupi Sempre Verde.

ABSTRACT There is interest in identifying the best maize and cowpea cultivars to be used in monocropped and intercropping systems for the production of dry grain. In order to meet this interest, two monocrops of cowpea (the traditional varieties, Corujinha and Sempre Verde) were evaluated with two monocrops of maize (the AG 1051 double hybrid and the AL Bandeirante variety) and four intercrops (combinations of the cowpea varieties and the maize cultivars). Under the intercropping systems, the maize and cowpea occupied alternating rows. A completely randomized block design with six replications was used. Grain growth and yield were higher in the AG 1051 hybrid than in the AL Bandeirante variety in both the monocropped and intercropping systems. For medium-sized maize grain, the growth and yield were higher in the monocrops than in the intercrops. It is unimportant which variety of cowpea, Corujinha or Sempre Verde, is used with each maize cultivar in the intercropping systems, as there was no interaction between the maize cultivars and the cowpea cultivars. In the monocropped systems, the grain yield of the Corujinha cultivar was greater than that of the Sempre Verde cultivar. Mean grain yield in the monocrops was greater than in the intercrops. Both cowpea cultivars showed better performance when intercropped with the AL Bandeirante maize cultivar than with the AG 1051 cultivar. The value of the land equivalent ratio was greater than 1.0 only for the combination of the AL Bandeirante variety of maize and the Sempre Verde variety of cowpea.

RESUMO Espigas verdes de milho são muito apreciadas em todo o Brasil e alcançam preços superiores aos dos grãos secos. Fato semelhante ocorre com os grãos verdes de feijão-caupi, que são muito apreciados nas regiões Norte e Nordeste desse país. Objetivou-se identificar cultivares de milho e de feijão-caupi que possam ser cultivadas no estado do Pará, em monocultivo ou em consórcio, para produção de grãos verdes. Um experimento foi realizado no delineamento de blocos casualizados com seis repetições, em Marabá-PA. Monocultivos de variedades tradicionais de feijão-caupi (Corujinha e Sempre Verde) e de cultivares de milho (AG 1051 e AL Bandeirante) e quatro consórcios, em fileiras alternadas, das combinações das variedades e cultivares foram avaliados. A cultivar AG 1051 foi mais produtiva do que a cultivar AL Bandeirante, em monocultivo e em consorciação. As cultivares de feijão-caupi apresentaram desempenhos semelhantes nos dois sistemas de cultivo. Não houve interação cultivares de milho x cultivares de feijão-caupi. Os monocultivos foram superiores aos consórcios, quanto aos rendimentos de espigas verdes e de vagens e grãos verdes. Considerando-se a eficiência do uso da terra, se a exploração visar a produção de vagens verdes, a consorciação somente será proveitosa na combinação AG 1051 + Corujinha. Se a exploração visar o rendimento de grãos verdes de feijão-caupi, a consorciação será vantajosa com a cultivar AG 1051 for combinada com qualquer cultivar de feijão-caupi. O consórcio envolvendo a cultivar AL Bandeirante somente será proveitoso com a cultivar Corujinha e se a exploração do milho visar espigas verdes empalhadas comercializáveis.

ABSTRACT Green ears of maize are much appreciated all over Brazil and reach higher prices than dry grain. This also occurs with green cowpea grain, which is much appreciated in the north and northeast of the country. The aim of this study was to identify maize and cowpea cultivars that can be grown as monocrops or intercrops to produce green grain in the state of Pará (PA). An experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with six replications in Marabá, PA. Monocrops of traditional varieties of the cowpea (‘Corujinha’ and ‘Sempre Verde’) and the maize cultivars (‘AG 1051’ and ‘AL Bandeirante’), and four alternating, intercropped rows of a combination of the varieties and cultivars were evaluated. The ‘AG 1051’ cultivar was more productive than the ‘AL Bandeirante’ cultivar, as both a monocrop and an intercrop. The cowpea cultivars showed a similar performance under both systems of cultivation. There was no interaction between the maize cultivars and cowpea cultivars. The monocrops were superior to the intercrops for green-ear, green-pod and green-grain yield. Considering the land equivalent ratio, if the aim is to produce green pods, intercropping is only beneficial in the AG 1051 + Corujnha combination. If the aim is for green-grain yield in the cowpea, intercropping is more advantageous when the ‘AG 1051’ cultivar is combined with any cowpea cultivar. The intercrop including the ‘AL Bandeirante’ cultivar is only beneficial with the ‘Corujinha’ cultivar, and if the aim is to market unhusked, green ears of maize.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate in vitro the presence of fluoride in saliva after applying professional use products on the surface of dental enamel. Material and Methods: Experimental groups were composed by: Cariostatic 12% (CA), Fluoridated Varnish 5% (FV), Fluorine Acidulate Gel 1.23% (AG) and Fluorine Neutral Gel 2% (NG). Fluoridated dentifrice (FD) and Artificial Saliva (AS) were used as controls. Products (10 μL) were applied to the surface of bovine enamel blocks (4×4×1 mm, n = 18) and immersed in 10 mL of artificial saliva at room temperature. Aliquots of artificial saliva (750 μL) of each sample were collected 1, 2, 4, 8, 24 and 48 hours after application of the products. Analyses were performed in triplicate, using a fluoride ion-specific electrode coupled to a potentiometer. The equipment was calibrated using a standard curve for fluoride analysis from 0.125 to 64 μgF-/mL. Results: Greater fluoride concentration (μgF-/mL) was observed after 1h application, as follows: 197.40 (NG), 172.21 (AG), 20.25 (CA), 14.49 (FV) e 11.81 (FD). Fluoride concentration increased overtime for all groups. After 48h, the following fluoride concentrations were assessed: 428.12 (AG), 267.25 (NG), 65.36 (FV), and 62.52 (CA). Conclusion: Greater fluoride release was observed for AG and NG groups, mostly after 1h application.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar as positividades dos biomarcadores p16 e Ki-67 em lesões de baixo grau (BG) ou de alto grau (AG), e relacioná-las com os fatores de risco e com a recidiva dessas lesões. Métodos Estudo retrospectivo caso-controle, com 86 pacientes com lesões de BG e AG, submetidas à conização por cirurgia de alta frequência entre 1999 e 2004. O grupo de controle foi constituído de 69 mulheres sem recidivas, e o grupo de estudo, de 17 pacientes que recidivaram. Todas as pacientes foram acompanhadas durante dois anos após a cirurgia, com controle a cada seis meses, incluindo citologia e colposcopia. As peças provenientes de cirurgia de alta frequência (CAF) foram submetidas a imunohistoquímica para p16 e Ki-67. A análise estatística foi realizada com o programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, IBM-SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, EUA), com p significante quando < 0,05. Resultados Isoladamente ou em conjunto, p16 e Ki-67 não se relacionaram com as recidivas quando analisados na totalidade dos casos. Entretanto, avaliando especificamente as lesões de AG, a positividade (2+ e 3 + ) do conjunto p16/Ki-67 foi relacionada com recidiva (0,010). No mais, p16, isoladamente, foi também mais expresso nas lesões de AG (2+ e 3 + , p= 0,018), mas sem relação com recidiva. Conclusão Quando testadas na totalidade dos casos, as proteínas p16 e Ki-67, separadas ou em conjunto, se mostraram ineficientes como marcadores primários de recidiva de lesões precursoras. Entretanto, quando avaliadas somente no grupo diagnóstico prévio de lesão de AG, as expressões das proteínas p16 e p16/Ki-67 têm relação com a recidiva, e podem ser úteis no acompanhamento desses casos.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the expressions of biomarkers p16 and Ki-67 in low-grade (LG) or high-grade (HG) lesions, and to relate them to risk factors and the recurrence of these lesions. Methods A retrospective case-control study of 86 patients with LG and HG lesions who underwent a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) between 1999 and 2004. The control group was composed of 69 women with no recurrence, and the study group, of 17 patients with recurrence. All patients were followed-up over a two-year period after surgery, and screened every six months, including cytology and colposcopy. Biopsy samples collected from LEEP were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis for p16 and Ki-67. The statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software (SPSS, IBM-SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, US), with a significant p < 0.05. Results The biomarkers p16 and Ki-67, separately or combined, showed no relation to recurrence on the total analysis. However, evaluating specifically HG lesions, the positive expression (2+ and 3 + ) of p16/Ki-67 was associated with recurrence (0.010). In addition, p16 isolated was also more expressive in HG lesions (2+ and 3 + , p= 0.018), but it was unrelated to recurrence. Conclusion Proteins p16 and Ki-67, both isolated and combined, are not reliable primary markers for the recurrence of cervical lesions in the majority of LG lesions. However, analyzing only the group with prior diagnosis of HG lesions, the expressions of p16 and of p16/Ki-67 were associated with recurrence, and they may be useful in monitoring these cases.

ContextoA doença de Crohn caracteriza-se por uma desordem inflamatória, crônica e debilitante do trato gastrointestinal. Diversos fatores contribuem para seu desenvolvimento. A partir da realização de estudos amplos do genoma, o polimorfismo T300A do gene ATG16L1 (autophagy-related 16-like 1) tem sido relacionado com aumento de susceptibilidade ao desenvolvimento desta doença.ObjetivosAnalisar a incidência do polimorfismo T300A (rs2241880) em pacientes com doença de Crohn.MétodosForam analisadas 238 amostras de doadores de sangue (grupo controle) e 106 amostras de pacientes com doença de Crohn, procedentes de cinco centros. A genotipagem consistiu em amplificação do segmento gênico T300A, via reação em cadeia da polimerase, seguidos da análise de polimorfismo de comprimentos dos fragmentos de restrição. Os amplicons e fragmentos foram separados via eletroforese em gel de agarose e visualizados sob luz ultravioleta.ResultadosO genótipo AG foi mais prevalente entre os pacientes e controles (50% vs 44,8%), seguido dos genótipos AA (26,4% vs 35,1%) e GG (23,6% vs 20,1%). A freqüência do alelo G do polimorfismo T300A foi maior no grupo de pacientes com doença de Crohn (48,6%) do que nos controles (42,4%), embora sem significância estatística.ConclusõesNão foi possível confirmar o aumento de susceptibilidade à doença de Crohn conferido pelo polimorfismo T300A.

ContextCrohn’s disease is characterized by a chronic and debilitating inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. Several factors may contribute to its development. From extensive studies of the human genome, the polymorphism T300A of the gene ATG16L1 (autophagy-related 16-like 1) has been related to increased risk of developing this disease.ObjectivesAnalyze the role of polymorphism T300A (rs2241880) in patients with Crohn’s disease.Methods238 samples from (control group) and 106 samples from patients with Crohn’s disease recruited at five Southern Brazilian reference centers were evaluated. The genotyping consisted of the amplification via Polymerase Chain Reaction of the genomic segment encompassing T300A, followed by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism analysis. The amplicons and fragments were separated by agarose gel electrophoresis and confirmed under ultraviolet light.ResultsThe genotype AG was more prevalent among patients and controls (50% vs 44.8%), followed by genotypes AA (26.4% vs 35.1%) and GG (23.6% vs 20.1%). The frequency of the allele G of the polymorphism T300A was higher in the group of patients with Crohn’s disease (48.6%) than in controls (42.4%), although not reaching statistical significance.ConclusionsIt was not possible to confirm the increased susceptibility on development of Crohn’s disease conferred by polymorphism T300A.

The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of barriers to interferon treatment in a population of HIV/HCV coinfected patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted at two AIDS Outpatient Clinics in Brazil. The study included all HIV infected patients followed at these institutions from January 2005 to November 2007. Medical records of 2,024 HIV-infected patients were evaluated. The prevalence of anti-HCV positive patients among them was 16.7%. Medical records of HCV/HIV coinfected patients were analyzed. 189 patients with the following characteristics were included in our study: mean age 43 years; male gender 65%; former IDUs (52%); HCV genotype 1 (66.4%); HCV genotype 3 (30.5%); median CD4+ T cell count was 340 cells/mm³. Among 189 patients included in the analyses, only 75 (39.6%) were considered eligible for HCV treatment. The most frequent reasons for non-treatment were: non-compliance during clinical follow-up (31.4%), advanced HIV disease (21.9%), excessive alcohol consumption or active drug use (18.7%), and psychiatric disorders (10.1%). CONCLUSIONS: In Brazil, as in elsewhere, more than half of HIV/HCV coinfected patients (60.4%) have been considered not candidates to received anti-HCV treatment. The main reasons may be deemed questionable: non-adherence, drug abuse, and psychiatric disease. Our results highlight the importance of multidisciplinary teams to optimize the access of coinfected patients to HCV treatment.

O ácido graxo (AG) é uma importante fonte de energia para o músculo esquelético. Durante o exercício sua mobilização é aumentada para suprir as necessidades da musculatura ativa. Acredita-se que diversos pontos de regulação atuem no controle da oxidação dos AG, sendo o principal a atividade do complexo carnitina palmitoil transferase (CPT), entre os quais três componentes estão envolvidos: a CPT I, a CPT II e carnitina acilcarnitina translocase. A função da CPT I durante o exercício físico é controlar a entrada de AG para o interior da mitocôndria, para posterior oxidação do AG e produção de energia. Em resposta ao treinamento físico há um aumento na atividade e expressão da CPT I no músculo esquelético. Devido sua grande importância no metabolismo de lipídios, os mecanismos que controlam sua atividade e sua expressão gênica são revisados no presente estudo. Reguladores da expressão gênica de proteínas envolvidas no metabolismo de lipídios no músculo esquelético, os receptores ativados por proliferadores de peroxissomas (PPAR) alfa e beta, são discutidos com um enfoque na resposta ao treinamento físico.

Fatty acids are an important source of energy for the skeletal muscle. During exercise, their mobilization is increased to supply the muscle energetic needs. Many points of regulation act in the fatty acids metabolism, where the carnitine palmytoiltransferase (CPT) complex is the main control system. Three compounds named CPT I, CPT II and carnitine acyl carnitine translocase (CACT) are components of this system. Its function is to control the influx of fatty acids inside the mitochondria for posterior oxidation and energy production. There is a pronounced increase in both activity and gene expression of CPT I in the skeletal muscle in response to exercise. Due to its importance in lipid metabolism, the controlling mechanisms are reviewed in the present study. The modulation of gene expression by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) alpha and beta during the physical training is also discussed in this review.

Investigamos em portadores de esquistossomose hepatoesplênica após esplenectomia com ou sem auto-implante esplênico: índice de aderência, produção de superóxido (SP) e de TNF-alfa em monócitos, tratados ou não com tuftsina. Avaliamos três grupos: voluntários sadios CG (grupo controle) (n=12); esplenectomizados com auto-implante AG (n=18) e esplenectomizados sem auto-implante WAG (n=9). Índice de aderência e TNF-alfa não diferiram entre os grupos. SP foi semelhante em CG e AG na 1ª hora após estimulação celular. SP foi maior em todos intervalos de tempo nos grupos CG e AG, comparados ao WAG. O tratamento com tuftsina recuperou o padrão de normalidade de SP em AG, com aumento da 1ª para a 2ª hora nos níveis do CG. O tratamento com tuftsina não alterou SP em WAG, permanecendo reduzida em todos intervalos. O auto-implante esplênico parece recuperar e manter os parâmetros imunológicos avaliados, que têm participação importante na resposta do hospedeiro às infecções.

Adherence index, superoxide and TNF-alpha production in monocytes, with or without tuftsin treatment, were investigated in hepatosplenic schistosomiasis mansoni bearers with splenectomy with or without autologous implantation of spleen tissue. Three groups were evaluated: Healthy volunteers control group (CG) (n=12); Splenectomy with seft auto-transplant AG (n=18) and Splenectomy without auto-transplant WAG (n=9). Adherence index and TNF-alpha did not differ among the groups. Superoxide production was similar in CG and AG, in the 1st hour after cell stimulation. SP was larger in each hour time in CG and AG groups as compared WAS group. TT recovered normal pattern of SP in AG comparable with levels found in CG, with increase from the 1st to 2nd hour. However, TT did not alter SP in WAG, which remained reduced in all time points. Autologous implantation of spleen tissue seems to contribute for recovery and maintenance of the evaluated immunological reactions, which might be important in response to infections.

Os objetivos deste trabalho foram desenvolver e testar um algoritmo genético (AG) para a solução de problemas de gerenciamento florestal com restrições de integridade. O AG foi testado em quatro problemas, contendo entre 93 e 423 variáveis de decisão, sujeitos às restrições de singularidade, produção mínima e produção máxima, periodicamente. Todos os problemas tiveram como objetivo a maximização do valor presente líquido. O AG foi codificado em ambiente delphi 5.0 e os testes foram realizados em um microcomputador AMD K6II 500 MHZ, com memória RAM de 64 MB e disco rígido de 15GB. O desempenho do AG foi avaliado de acordo com as medidas de eficácia e eficiência. Os valores ou categorias dos parâmetros do AG foram testados e comparados quanto aos seus efeitos na eficácia do algoritmo. A seleção da melhor configuração de parâmetros foi feita com o teste L&O, a 1% de probabilidade, e as análises foram realizadas através de estatísticas descritivas. A melhor configuração de parâmetros propiciou ao AG eficácia média de 94,28%, valor mínimo de 90,01%, valor máximo de 98,48%, com coeficiente de variação de 2,08% do ótimo matemático, obtido pelo algoritmo exato branch and bound. Para o problema de maior porte, a eficiência do AG foi cinco vezes superior à eficiência do algoritmo exato branch and bound. O AG apresentou-se como uma abordagem bastante atrativa para solução de importantes problemas de gerenciamento florestal.

The objectives of this work was to develop and test a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve problems of forest management with integer constraints. GA was tested in five problems containing 93 - 423 decision variables, periodically subject to singularity constraints, minimum and maximum production. The problems had the objective of maximizing the net present value. GA was codified into delphi 5.0 language and the tests were performed in a microcomputer AMD K6II 500 MHZ, with RAM memory of 64 MB and hard disk of 15GB. The GA performance was evaluated according to the efficacy and efficiency measures. The different values or categories for the GA parameters were tested and compared in relation to their effects on the algorithm efficacy. The selection of the parameters' best configuration was performed by using the L&O test at 1% probability and analyses via descriptive statistics. The parameters' best configuration provided for GA average efficacy was of 94.28%, minimum value equal to 90.01%, maximum value equal to 98.48%, with coefficient of variation of 2.08% of the mathematical optimum, obtained by the exact algorithm branch and bound. As for the larger problem, the efficiency of GA was five times superior to the efficiency of the exact algorithm branch and bound. GA was found to be a quite attractive approach to solve important forest management problems.
