ABSTRACT Barbados gooseberry (BGB) is a non-conventional vegetable highlighted for its nutritional value, particularly its protein content. However, there is a lack of scientific information for improving the plantation system of this plant. This research proposed to evaluate high-density systems to cultivate BGB plants for sprout production. The experiment was carried out in the Horticulture Sector of the Canguiri Experimental Station Farm from UFPR, located in the county of Pinhais, Paraná State, Brazil. BGB was planted in open field beds using distinctive plantation systems according to plant stands and pruning and thinning management. The experimental design was randomized blocks with three repetitions per treatment. Five high-density plantation systems (treatments) were tested: 10 (10?10): 10 × 10 cm; 2) (20?20): 20 × 20 cm; and 3) (30?30): 30 × 30 cm spacing with thinning to keep one sprout growing per primary branch per plant; 4) (30?30TS) was represented by 30 × 30 cm spacing with thinning to keep one sprout growing from each of two secondary branches grown from the primary branch to give two sprouts (TS) per plant; 5) (30?30FS) consisted of plants with 30 × 30 cm spacing with no thinning (FS = free growing sprouts). The first three treatments were thinned to one sprout per plant. Protein content of BGB sprouts was also determined to verify its real protein content. A high-density plantation system promoted BGB sprouts productivity with high protein content (28.8% from leaves of sprout). Treatment 5 produced the highest yield (21.7 t/ha per month).

RESUMO O ora-pro-nóbis (OPN) é uma olerícola não convencional que se destaca pelo seu valor nutricional, especialmente, em relação a seu teor proteico. Porém, há escassez de informações técnico-científicas sobre sistemas de cultivo recomendados. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a produção de brotos de OPN em sistema superadensado. O experimento foi desenvolvido no Setor de Horticultura da Fazenda Experimental Canguiri da UFPR, em Pinhais-PR. Para isso, efetuou-se o plantio do OPN em canteiros a céu aberto em diferentes sistemas de cultivo que variaram conforme a densidade de plantas (espaçamento) e manejo de podas e desbrotas. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com três repetições por tratamento. Foram testados cinco sistemas de cultivo em alta densidade de plantio (tratamentos): 1) 10 cm × 10 cm, 2) 20 cm × 20 cm, 3) 30 cm × 30 cm, 4) 30 cm × 30 cm e 5) 30 cm × 30 cm de espaçamento de plantio; sendo os três primeiros com desbrotas para produção de um broto por planta por colheita, o quarto com desbrota para produção de dois brotos por planta por colheita e o último sem desbrotas para livre produção de brotos. Foi também avaliada a porcentagem de proteína nos brotos de OPN para verificar o seu real conteúdo proteico. Os resultados mostraram que sistema de cultivo superadensado do OPN promove alta produtividade ao mesmo tempo que oferece um produto de alto conteúdo proteico (28,8% em folhas de broto). O cultivo no espaçamento de 30 × 30 cm e sem desbrotas proporcionou a maior produção de brotos (27,1 t/ha por mês).

Resumen Existen pocos estudios relacionados con microdensitometría de rayos X en madera de bosques tropicales nativos. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo determinar la variación radial de la densidad aparente del leño de Amburana cearensis (Allemão) A.C.Sm. por microdensitometría de rayos X. Se seleccionaron 11 árboles, de los que se cortaron secciones radiales de la médula a la corteza, para establecer la densidad aparente y las características anatómicas en tres posiciones radiales. Los resultados mostraron que la madera de A. cearensis presentó valores medios de densidad de madera, mínimo y máximo de 0.55, 0.13 y 0.87 g.cm-3, respectivamente. Asimismo, mostró diferencia significativa en tres posiciones médula (intermedia y corteza), esta diferencia puede ser explicada por la anatomía microscópica, especialmente con los vasos (diámetro, área y el número.mm-2). La microdensitometría de rayos X es una herramienta importante en la evaluación radial de la madera y puede ayudar en la definición de los límites de los anillos de crecimiento de A. cearensis.

Abstract There are few studies related with X-ray micro-densitometry regarding wood from native tropical forests. The objective of this study was to determine the radial variation of the apparent density of the Amburana cearensis (Allemao) A.C.Sm. wood by X-ray micro-densitometry. Indeed, eleven trees were selected, in which radial sections were cut from the pith to the cortex, in order to determine the apparent density and the anatomical characteristic in three radial positions. The results showed that the wood of A. cearensis presented mean values of wood density, minimum and maximum of 0.16 and 0.87 g.cm-3 respectively. Moreover, the wood showed significant difference in three positions of the pith, (intermediate and cortex), and this difference can be explained by the microscopic anatomy, especially with the vessels (diameter, area and number.mm-2). X-ray micro-densitometry is an important tool in the radial evaluation of wood and can help in the definition of the growth rings’ limits of A. cearensis.

Resumo: Este artigo estuda a produtividade total dos fatores (PTF) na agricultura de 19 países da América Latina no período de 1961 a 2010. Na análise do desempenho econômico dos países, utiliza-se a abordagem paramétrica da fronteira estocástica de produção. Verifica-se que todos os países apresentaram variação da PTF positiva para o período entre 1961 a 2010, ou seja, apresentaram crescimento do produto, assim como progresso técnico positivo. A maior variação da PTF corresponde ao Brasil, 55,73%; já a menor variação apresenta-se para Trinidad e Tobago, 42,06%. Contudo, a mudança na eficiência técnica mostrou-se decrescente para quase 50% da totalidade dos países. Tratando-se de eficiência de escala, apenas Argentina, Brasil e Uruguai apresentaram médias positivas para o período. Em relação à mudança na eficiência alocativa, todos os países mostraram-se decrescentes.

Abstract: This article studies the total factor productivity (TFP) in agriculture from 19 countries in Latin America in the period from 1961 to 2010. In the analysis of the countries' economic performance, the parametric approach to stochastic frontier production is used. It is observed that all countries had positive TFP change in the period from 1961 to 2010, which showed product growth as well as positive technical progress. The greatest TFP variation in Brazil is 55.73%, while the smallest change is in Trinidad and Tobago, 42.06%. However, the change in technical efficiency showed to be decreasing to nearly 50% of all countries. In the case of scale efficiency, only Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay had positive average for the period. Regarding the change in allocative efficiency, all countries showed to be decreasing.

Intermolecular forces are a useful concept that can explain the attraction between particulate matter as well as numerous phenomena in our lives such as viscosity, solubility, drug interactions, and dyeing of fibers. However, studies show that students have difficulty understanding this important concept, which has led us to develop a free educational software in English and Portuguese. The software can be used interactively by teachers and students, thus facilitating better understanding. Professors and students, both graduate and undergraduate, were questioned about the software quality and its intuitiveness of use, facility of navigation, and pedagogical application using a Likert scale. The results led to the conclusion that the developed computer application can be characterized as an auxiliary tool to assist teachers in their lectures and students in their learning process of intermolecular forces.

The diterpene ent-18,19-dihydroxytrachylobane was biotransformed for the first time by Rhizopus stolonifer, and yielded the new ent-11β,18,19-trihydroxytrachylobane derivative besides the new ent-kaur-11-ene diterpenes ent-16α,18,19-trihydroxykaur-11-ene and ent-18,19-dihydroxy-16α-methoxykaur-11-ene. Their structures were determined by spectrometric methods.

Foram processar quatro formulações de doces em massa de gabiroba e avaliar às suas características físico-químicas, funcionais, perfil reológico e aceitabilidade dos doces. As características físico-químicas e físicas avaliadas foram: atividade de água, acidez titulável, pH, açúcares redutores e não redutores, proteínas, cinzas, fibra alimentar, cor, firmeza. Para avaliação funcional das formulações foram determinados os teores de vitamina C, compostos fenólicos, carotenóides. O potencial antioxidante foi determinado através dos métodos ABTS+ e DPPH•. As análises reológicas foram realizadas em reômetro HAAKE RS 75 Rheoestress com o sensor placa-placa. O comportamento das curvas de fluxo foi ajustado pelos modelos de Lei da Potência e Herschel-Bulkley. A avaliação sensorial foi realizada por 52 provadores não treinados utilizando escala hedônica estruturada de nove pontos. Os doces apresentaram teores de compostos fenólicos totais entre 322,09 e 728,48 mg 100 g-1. A variação do teor de vitamina C foi de 97,39 a 123,39 mg 100 g-1. As amostras também apresentaram uma boa retenção de beta caroteno. Todas as amostras apresentaram módulo de armazenamento (G') superior ao módulo de perda (G"). O estudo de análise sensorial revelou uma aceitação satisfatória para formulações de doce em massa de gabiroba.

Four formulations of gabiroba jam were processed, and their physicochemical and functional characteristics, rheological profile and jam acceptance were assessed. The physicochemical and chemical characteristics evaluated were water activity, titratable acidity, pH, reducing and non-reducing sugars, proteins, ashes, dietary fibers, color, and firmness. For functional analyses of the formulations, vitamin C, phenolic compounds and carotenoid contents were determined. The ABTS+ and DPPH• methods were employed to evaluate the antioxidant potential. Rheological analysis was performed in a HAAKE RS 75 Rheoestress rheometer with a plate/plate sensor. The flow curve behavior was adjusted using the Power Law and Herschel-Bulkley models. Sensory analyses were performed by 52 untrained testers using a 9-point structured hedonic scale. The content of total phenolic compounds in the jam was between 322.09 and 728.48 mg 100 g-1. The variation of vitamin C content was 97.39 to 123.39 mg 100 g-1. The samples also showed good retention of beta carotene. All samples showed a higher storage modulus (G') than loss (G") Thsensory evaluation revealed a satisfactory acceptance of the gabiroba jam formulations.

The most frequent epigenetic alterations in Wilms tumor (WT) occur at WT2, assigned to 11p15. WT2 consists of two domains: telomeric domain 1 (DMRH19) that contains the IGF2 gene and an imprinted maternally expressed transcript (H19) and centromeric domain 2 (KvDMR) that contains the genes KCNQ1, KCNQ1OT1 and CDKN1C. In this work, we used pyrosequencing and MS-MLPA to compare the methylation patterns of DMRH19/KvDMR in blood and tumor samples from 40 WT patients. Normal constitutional KvDMR methylation indicated that most of the epigenetic alterations in WT occur at DMRH19. Constitutional DMRH19 hypermethylation (HM DMRH19) was observed in two patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Pyrosequencing and MS-MLPA showed HM DMRH19 in 28/34 tumor samples: 16/34 with isolated HM DMRH19 and 12/34 with concomitant HM DMRH19 and KvDMR hypomethylation, indicating paternal uniparental disomy. With the exception of one blood sample, the MS-MLPA and pyrosequencing findings were concordant. Diffuse or focal anaplasia was present in five tumor samples and was associated with isolated somatic HM DMRH19 in four of them. Constitutional 11p15 methylation abnormalities were present in 5% of the samples and somatic abnormalities in the majority of tumors. Combined analysis of DMRH19/KvDMR by pyrosequencing and MS-MLPA is beneficial for characterizing epigenetic anomalies in WT, and MS-MLPA is useful and reliable for estimation of DNA methylation in a clinical setting.

A Mucuna pruriens (L). Dc é uma planta da família Fabaceae, conhecida popularmente como feijão-veludo, fava-coceira, feijão chiporro, mucuna, entre outros. Possui diversas propriedades medicinais, entre elas, o tratamento da doença de Parkinson (DP). Estudos internacionais vêm demonstrando que essa planta possui atividade superior à do fármaco levodopa para o tratamento da DP. O presente estudo avaliou a possibilidade da atividade antioxidante dessa planta auxiliar nesses resultados, uma vez que as células nervosas são altamente sensíveis às substâncias oxidativas. Para isto foi quantificada a concentração fenólica da semente da mucuna e os testes empregados para a avaliação da atividade antioxidante foram o teste de redução do complexo fosfomolibdênio, redução do radical 1,1-difenil-2-picril-hidrazil (DPPH•) e a formação do radical monocatiônico ABTS•+, proveniente do ácido [2-2'-azino-bis(3-etil-benzolina-6-sulfonado)]. Essa análise demonstrou que M. pruriens possui alta capacidade antioxidante, no entanto, não superior à levodopa isolada e, portanto, novos estudos devem ser realizados para a elucidação da atividade dessa planta em seres humanos.

Mucuna pruriens (L). Dc is a plant of the Fabaceae family, commonly known as velvet bean, itchy bean, chiporro bean, mucuna, among others. This plant has several medicinal properties, including its potential to treat Parkinson's disease (PD). International studies have shown that this plant surpasses the benefits of the substance levodopa in the treatment of PD. Taking into account that nerve cells are highly sensitive to oxidative substances, this study evaluated the antioxidant activity of mucuna and compared it to that of levodopa. The plant seeds' phenolic concentration was quantified by using the Folin-Denis reagent and the antioxidant activity assays were performed by using three different methods: the reduction of the phosphomolybdenium complex, the reduction of radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) and the formation of radical monocation ABTS•+, from the acid [2-2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate)]. Results showed that M. pruriens presents high antioxidant capacity, although not superior to isolated levodopa antioxidant capacity. Therefore, further studies should be performed to elucidate the activity of this plant in humans.

A extensão universitária é um processo educativo, cultural e científico, que articula o ensino e a pesquisa de forma indissociável, possibilitando uma relação transformadora entre Universidade e sociedade. Nesse contexto, o projeto Unimontes Solidária tem como objetivo promover ação solidária articulada, por meio dos diversos cursos da Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros (Unimontes), nos municípios carentes das regiões norte e noroeste de Minas Gerais, Vales do Jequitinhonha e do Mucuri, de forma a equacionar os problemas sociais, reduzir a exclusão e as disparidades regionais, colocando a serviço da sociedade o conhecimento que é produzido na Universidade. As ações do projeto no município de Indaiabira (MG) proporcionaram benefícios tanto aos acadêmicos do curso de Medicina como à comunidade local, a partir das atividades extracurriculares desenvolvidas, ampliando o espaço de aprendizado oferecido pela instituição, complementando a formação acadêmica, bem como amenizando as demandas inerentes ao município relacionadas à saúde. Pesquisar, aprender sobre temas relacionados e estender o conhecimento adquirido à comunidade é a tríade que sustenta a formação acadêmica nas mais modernas metodologias de ensino.

University extension is an educational, cultural, and scientific process that combines teaching and research inseparably, transforming the relationship between university and society. In this context, the project "Unimontes Solidarity" aims to promote common action through the different undergraduate courses at the State University in Montes Claros (Unimontes) in the Jequitinhonha and Mucuri Valleys, economically depressed areas in northern and northwestern Minas Gerais State. The purpose is help people deal with social problems and mitigate social exclusion and regional disparities, sharing the knowledge produced at the University with society. The project's activities in the town of Indaiabira benefitted both medical students and the local community. Extracurricular activities allowed students to practice what they had learned in medical school and improved people's health conditions. Researching, learning about related issues, and extending knowledge to the community is the triad for academic training in modern teaching methodologies.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a qualidade pós-colheita de frutos de tomate de mesa de diferentes sistemas de cultivos. As amostras de tomate convencional, cv. Raísa (LV), e orgânico, cv. Santa Clara, foram mantidas a uma temperatura de 23,5 ± 2 ºC, com UR de 74% ± 5 e submetidas a análise da massa, peso específico, cinzas, sólidos totais, sólidos solúveis totais, acidez titulável total, relação sólidos solúveis totais/acidez titulável total, pH, vitamina C, Salmonella spp., coliformes totais, coliformes fecais, bolores e leveduras e análise sensorial, que foi realizada pela Análise Descritiva Quantitativa - ADQ. O tempo de armazenagem foi de 13 e 14 dias para o tomate de mesa cultivado nos sistemas convencional e orgânico, respectivamente. The objective of this work was to evaluate the postharvest quality of fruits grown using different systems. Conventional (CS) tomatoes of the variety Raisa and Organic (OS), variety Santa Clara rustic, were stored at 23.5 ± 2 ºC, RH 74% ± 5 and analyzed for mass, specific weight, ash, total solids, total soluble solids, total titrable acidity, total soluble solids/total titrable acidity ratio, pH, vitamin C, Salmonella spp., total coliforms, faecal coliforms, molds and yeasts, and sensory analysis (using Quantitative Descriptive Analyses - QDA). The time of storage was of 13 days for the conventional tomatoes and 14 days for the organic tomatoes. Weight loss (3,74%) was lower for the conventional tomatoes. Both fruits were similar in the physical, chemical, sensory and microbiological analysis in the different maturity stages

A presença dos produtos orgânicos nas gôndolas das grandes redes de supermercados indica que existe um potencial de mercado para esses produtos, no entanto poucas são as informações técnico-científicas sobre eles. Em razão disso, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a qualidade do tomate de mesa cultivado nos sistemas convencional (SC) e orgânico (SO) comercializado na Região Metropolitana de Curitiba. As amostras foram avaliadas pela massa, peso específico, cinzas, sólidos totais, sólidos solúveis totais, acidez titulável total, relação sólidos solúveis totais/acidez titulável total, pH, vitamina C, nitratos, nitritos, multirresíduos, benzimidazóis e ditiocarbamatos. Os resultados da análise físico-química mostraram que somente na umidade os tomates não apresentaram diferença significativa ao nível de 5% quando comparados pelo Teste de Tukey. Em relação à análise toxicológica, não foram detectados multirresíduos e benzimidazóis até os limites de 0,04 mg.kg-1 e 0,1 mg.kg-1 de carbendazim, respectivamente. Nos resíduos de pesticidas do grupo químico ditiocarbamatos, foi identificado 0,01 mg.kg-1 (CS2) nas amostras de SC3 e SC4 do tomate de mesa cultivado no sistema convencional, abaixo do limite máximo recomendado (LMR) de 2,0 mg.kg-1 (CS2) de mancozebe.

The presence of organic products in the aisles of big supermarket chains indicates a market potential for these products. However, there is little technical and scientific information. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine the quality of tomatoes grown under conventional (CS) and organic (OS) systems, on sale in the metropolitan area of Curitiba, Brazil. Samples were evaluated in terms of mass, specific weight, ash, total solids, total soluble solids, total titratable acidity, total soluble solids/total titratable acidity ratio, pH, vitamin C, nitrates, nitrites, multiresidues. There were no significant differences between conventional and organic tomatoes, except in a 5 per cent difference in humidity, according to the Tukey test. Regarding the toxicological analyses, multiresidues and benzimidazole were not detected up to the limit of 0.04 mg.kg-1 and likewise carbendazim up to 0.1 mg.kg-1. Pesticide residues belonging to the dithiocarbamate chemical group were identified at levels of 0.01 mg.kg-1 in two samples of conventionally cultivated tomatoes. These levels are below the recommended upper limit for mancozebe fungicide (2.0 mg.kg-1 CS2).

Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes doses de silicato de cálcio sobre a população de ninfas de percevejo castanho das raízes em Brachiaria brizantha, nas características químicas do solo, planta e produção de matéria seca. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições, totalizando 20 parcelas. Os tratamentos testados foram cinco doses (0, 0,5, 1, 2, e 4 t ha-1) de silicato de cálcio aplicadas junto com a adubação NPK na implantação da B. brizantha. Foi avaliado o número de ninfas do percevejo (profundidade de 0 a 40 cm), o pH e os teores de cálcio e de silício no solo. Aos 120 dias do plantio, a gramínea foi cortada, determinando-se a composição química e a produção de massa seca. Verificou-se que a aplicação de 2,6 t ha-1 de silicato de cálcio foi a melhor dosagem estimada para a redução de ninfas do percevejo castanho das raízes. A aplicação de doses crescentes de silicato de cálcio no solo promoveu o incremento do pH, dos teores de cálcio e silício no solo e o aumento na produção de matéria seca de B. brizantha.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different calcium silicate rates on the nymph population of the brown root stinkbug in B. brizantha cv. marandu, in the soil chemical characteristics, and plant and dry matter production. The experiment was carried out in casualized blocks with five treatments and four repetitions, in a total of 20 plots. The treatments tested were five rates (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 t ha -1) of calcium silicate applied together with NPK fertilization in the implantation of B. brizantha. The nymph number (depths 0 to 40 cm), pH, and soil calcium and silicon content were evaluated. On the 120th day after sowing, the grass was cut to determine the chemical composition and dry matter production. It was verified that the application of 2.6 t ha -1 of calcium silicate was the best estimated rate for the reduction of brown root stinkbug nymphs. The application of increasing doses of calcium silicate in the soil caused an increase of the pH, calcium and silicon content in the soil, and an increase in B. brizantha dry matter production.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as alterações da qualidade interna de três tipos de ovos de avestruzes: frescos, armazenados sob temperatura ambiente (25°C) e sob temperatura de refrigeração (5°C), durante três, sete, 14, 21 e 28 dias de armazenamento. Houve queda significativa na Unidade Haugh, aumento do pH e diminuição da viscosidade em relação ao tempo de armazenamento. Os ovos mantidos em temperatura ambiente apresentaram maiores alterações do que os ovos armazenados sob refrigeração. Houve uma crescente perda de peso durante os dias de armazenamento, tanto sob temperatura ambiente, quanto em temperatura refrigerada, porém a perda de peso foi mais evidente na temperatura ambiente.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the inside changes quality of fresh ostrich eggs and eggs stored in ambient temperature (25°C) and in cooling condition storage (5°C), during 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after storage. There was a considerable slump at Unity Haugh, pH increasing and viscosity decreasing related to time storage. Eggs stored in ambienttemperature showed more alterations than the ones stored under refrigeration. There was an increasing loss of weight during the days of storage in ambient temperature and in cooling condition storage, although the loss of weight was more notable in the ambient temperature.

RACIONAL: As membranas e anéis esofágicos são entidades pouco freqüentes e, por isso, fica difícil o aprofundamento de seus aspectos clínicos e diagnósticos, sendo assim oportuna revisão do tema. MÉTODO: Foi realizada revisão da literatura internacional através do Pubmed e nacional utilizando-se as seguintes palavras-chave: esôfago, membranas, etiologia, diagnóstico. A extensão do tema foi limitada aos seguintes enfoques: conceitos, etiologia, epidemiologia, etiopatogenia e diagnóstico. CONCLUSÃO: Embora a literatura apresente bom entendimento do desenvolvimento dessas afecções, estudos devem ser continuados para aprofundar os conhecimentos existentes e melhor orientar a conduta a ser tomada nos seus portadores.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal membranes and rings are uncommon entities, being difficult to study and deepen clinical and diagnostic knowledge pertaining these structures, making this article an opportune review. METHODS: A literature review was made using Pubmed, being this one an international one, and a national review was made utilizing the following key-words: esophagus, membranes, etiology, diagnosis. The theme was limited to the following: concepts, etiology, epidemiology, etiopathogeny and diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Eventhough literature presents a good understanding of the development of these affections, further study and research must be continued in order to deepen the knowledge already known, as well as to better orientate the conduct taken pertaining patients who have it.

Distúrbios neuropsicológicos são encontrados em até 30% de crianças com Distúrbio Ventilatório Obstrutivo (DVO). OBJETIVO: Analisar a incidência de distúrbios neuropsicológicos em crianças brasileiras com diagnóstico de DVO, através de um questionário de screening, e comparar respostas antes e depois do tratamento cirúrgico. PACIENTES E MÉTODOS: Foram estudadas 30 crianças com diagnóstico clínico de DVO divididas em 3 grupos etários: grupo I com crianças de 4 a 7 anos, grupo II de 8 a 10 anos e grupo III com 11 anos ou mais. Os questionários foram respondidos pelos pais/responsáveis, contendo 30 questões divididas em bloco de 10 sobre déficit de atenção, hiperatividade e impulsividade. As crianças receberam o diagnóstico de um dos distúrbios quando apresentavam 3 ou mais questões positivas. A segunda entrevista ocorreu 6 meses após a adenotonsilectomia. RESULTADOS: Houve predomínio do sexo masculino (60,6%) em relação ao sexo feminino (39,4%). O grupo II foi o que apresentou mais significativas mudanças, com redução de 87,5% a 33,3% dos pacientes com déficit de atenção, 75% a 50% dos hiperativos e 50% a 33% dos impulsivos. CONCLUSÕES: Houve melhora neuropsicológica após a cirurgia, o que ocorreu principalmente no grupo de escolares (8 a 10 anos). Maior interação entre os profissionais de saúde é necessária no diagnóstico e acompanhamento dessas crianças.

Neuropsychological disorders are frequently associated with obstructive ventilatory disorders (OVD). AIM: To analyze the incidence of neuropsychological disorders in Brazilian children with OVD, using a screening questionnaire and to compare the answers given before and after surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 30 children with clinical diagnosis of OVD. The children were divided into 3 groups: group I, children aged 4 to 7; group II, from 8 to 10; and group III, children over 11. The applied questionnaires were answered by the parents or tutors, and comprised 30 questions, 10 for each disorder: attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The children were diagnosed with one of the disorders when presented 3 or more positive answers. The follow up interview occurred 6 months after adenotonsillectomy. RESULTS: There was a predominance of male gender (60.6%) over female gender (39.4%). Group II presented the highest number of significant changes, with reductions raging from 87.5% to 33.3% of patients with attention deficit, 75% to 50% of the hyperactive patients, and 50% to 33% of the impulsive patients. CONCLUSION: There was neuropsychological improvement after the surgery, which occurred mainly in the children from group II. More interaction among health professionals is necessary when diagnosing and following up similar cases.
