ABSTRACT Biochar is a material produced by the pyrolysis of agro-industrial waste, which has become one of the most promising management tools to improve soil quality. The aim was to determine the effects of incorporating biochar from different coffee wastes in sandy soil, cropped with maize, on soil chemical and microbial attributes. The experiment followed a factorial design 2 × 3 + 1 with two types of biochar, including coffee ground (CG) or coffee husk (CH) in 3 doses (4, 8, and 16 t·ha-1) and a control fertilized solely with bovine manure (3 t·ha-1). The variables analyzed were soil organic carbon, chemical attributes, microbial biomass (C, N and P), soil basal respiration and microbial gene abundance (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA and nifH gene). Most chemical attributes were strongly increased by CH application, while CG at 8 t·ha-1 increased the soil C:N ratio (3.5 times), P (2.1 times) and K+ (7.9 times) and at 4 t·ha-1 increased the C content, microbial biomass C and N (3, 2.1 and 1.6 times, respectively). The application of CG biochar at 16 t·ha-1 showed trend to increase the abundance of bacteria, fungi and diazotrophic genes (11, 10 and 2%, respectively). Contribution of both coffee biochar types, but mainly CH, was more effective than the soil that received organic manure alone. Biochar from coffee wastes is a promising tool to improve sandy soil quality.

Resumo O Arranjo Produtivo Local localizado no Agreste de Pernambuco vem desenvolvendo significativamente a economia da região. Apesar da sua importância, a atividade industrial traz preocupações ambientais relevantes no que diz respeito à eliminação de efluentes têxteis, principalmente das lavanderias industriais. Esses resíduos são compostos por diversos produtos químicos e, entre eles, vários tipos de metais pesados. A avaliação do comportamento de sorção de mecanismos de transporte de contaminantes como metais pesados é essencial para avaliar o risco de contaminação de aquíferos aluviais. Este estudo avaliou a sorção de metais pesados (Cu e Cd) em um depósito de sedimento aluvial no rio Capibaribe. Experimentos cinéticos e isotérmicos permitiram as análises de sorção de Cu e Cd. A cinética de sorção mostrou uma tendência de equilíbrio após 16h para Cu e 18h para Cd e foi melhor descrita por um modelo de pseudo-segunda ordem. Os dados de isoterma foram ajustados aos modelos Linear, Freundlich e Langmuir. Os modelos linear e de Freundlich descreveram satisfatoriamente as isotermas de sorção para os dois poluentes. Os metais em estudo representam risco de contaminação das águas subterrâneas de aquíferos aluviais, principalmente devido aos atributos físico-químicos do solo, como alto teor de areia (85%), baixa MO (2,1 g kg-1) e pH alcalino (8,2 ) As condições ambientais diminuem a absorção e facilitam a mobilidade do metal, aumentando muito os riscos ambientais inerentes à lixiviação de poluentes. O Cu apresentou maior afinidade com o solo estudado em todos os ensaios realizados em comparação com os resultados dos ensaios para o Cd.

Abstract The Local Production Arrangement, located in the Pernambuco’s Agreste state, has been significantly developing the region's economy. Despite its importance, industrial activity has caused relevant environmental concerns regarding the disposal of textile effluents, especially from industrial laundries. This waste is made up of many chemicals, and among them are various types of heavy metals. The evaluation of the sorption behavior of contaminant transport mechanisms such as heavy metals is essential to assess the risk of contamination of alluvial aquifers. This study evaluated the sorption of heavy metals (Cu and Cd) in an alluvial sediment deposit in the Capibaribe River. Kinetics and isotherm experiments allowed the analyses of Cu and Cd sorption. Kinetics sorption showed an equilibrium tendency after 16 h for Cu and 18 h for Cd and was better described by a pseudo-second order model. The isotherm data were adjusted to the Linear, Freundlich and Langmuir models. Both linear and Freundlich models satisfactorily described sorption isotherms for the two pollutants. The metals in the study represent a risk of contamination of the groundwater of alluvial aquifers, mainly due to physicochemical attributes of the soil, such as high sand content (85%), low MO (2.1 g kg-1) and alkaline pH (8.2). The environmental conditions decrease absorption and facilitate metal mobility, greatly increasing the environmental risks inherent in pollutant leaching. Cu showed a higher affinity with the soil studied in all assays performed compared with the results of the tests for Cd.

ABSTRACT Soil respiration represents the largest flux of CO2 emission from terrestrial ecosystems, being affected by land-use changes and soil properties. There are few studies investigating the response of soil respiration to land-use changes in the Caatinga biome. This study aimed to measure soil respiration from Caatinga vegetation and degraded pasture, to verify the effect of land-use changes on soil respiration. Measurements of soil respiration were performed using the infrared gas analyzer method over nine months (in rainy and dry seasons), in Caatinga and degraded pasture in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco. The soil moisture, soil temperature, soil organic carbon (SOC), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and climatic variables were also measured. Soil organic carbon and NDVI were higher in Caatinga than in degraded pasture, while the inverse occurred with soil temperature. The soil respiration showed a clear seasonal variation, with the highest values occurring in the wet season, being positively correlated with soil moisture and negatively with soil temperature. Soil respiration was significantly higher in the Caatinga (8.0 ton ha-1 yr-1 of C) than in degraded pasture (3.7 ton ha-1 yr-1 of C). These higher values of soil respiration in Caatinga were due to lower soil temperature and higher SOC, and can be seen as indicators of good environmental quality.

Resumo As águas residuais das indústrias têxteis são carregadas com corantes sintéticos. Esses efluentes geralmente não são tratados adequadamente, afetando a qualidade do solo e das águas subterrâneas, levando à contaminação ambiental. O Agreste de Pernambucano abriga um dos maiores centros têxteis do Brasil. Portanto, este trabalho tem como objetivo estudar o comportamento do corante Remazol Black B (RB5) em meios subsuperficiais nessa região. Os experimentos de cinética e sorção isotérmica permitiram avaliar a capacidade de retenção do RB5 em duas camadas de solo aluvial do leito seco do rio Capibaribe. A taxa máxima de sorção foi de 81,81 mg kg-1 e 21,7 mg kg-1 para a camada areia franco e camada areia, respectivamente. O modelo cinético de pseudo-segunda ordem descreveu mais adequadamente a cinética de sorção para ambos os solos. O comportamento das isotermas foi não-linear e o modelo de Freundlich foi o mais adequado para descrever esse processo para ambos os solos, apresentando valores de KF de 8,6407 L kg-1 para areia franco e 0,1868 L kg-1 para areia. Os parâmetros isotérmicos confirmam uma interação mais significativa do RB5 com a camada de areia franco do que com a camada de areia, indicando menor lixiviação na primeira camada, menos móvel para a contaminação por RB5. Além disso, as diferentes taxas de sorção para os dois solos indicam a importância do estudo do solo como um perfil heterogêneo.

Abstract Wastewater from textile industries is loaded with synthetic dyes. These effluents are often not adequately treated, affecting the soil and groundwater quality and leading to environmental contamination. The Agreste mesoregion of the state of Pernambuco is home to one of the largest textile centers in Brazil. This work therefore aims to study the behavior of Remazol Black B (RB5) dye in subsurface mediums in this region. The kinetics and isotherm sorption experiments allowed an evaluation of RB5 retention capacity in two layers of alluvial soil of the dry riverbed of the Capibaribe Basin. The maximum sorption rate was 81.81 mg kg-1 and 21.7 mg kg-1 for the loamy sand and sand layers, respectively. The Pseudo-second order kinetic model described more appropriately the sorption kinetics for both soils. The isotherms behavior was nonlinear, and Freundlich model was the most suitable to describe this process for both soils, presenting KF values of 8.6407 L kg-1 for loamy sand and 0.1868 L kg-1 for sand. The isotherm parameters confirm a more significant interaction of RB5 with the loamy sand layer than with the sand layer, indicating lower leaching in the first layer, which is less mobile for RB5 contamination. Furthermore, the different sorption rates for both soils indicate the importance of studying the soil as a heterogeneous profile.

Resumo A busca por melhores condições de vida tem levado os moradores da região semiárida brasileira a optarem por plantar culturas forrageiras, provocando a diminuição gradativa da vegetação nativa (Caatinga) desta região. A substituição da Caatinga pela palma, por exemplo, tem efeito pouco estudado, sobretudo no tocante as propriedades físico-hídricas do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar as características físico-hídricas de um Neossolo Litólico em duas áreas com diferentes condições de cobertura vegetal: uma cultivada com Palma forrageira (O. ficus-indica) e a outra com Caatinga. Observou-se que as diferenças na estrutura do solo, especialmente na porosidade, entre o solo natural e cultivado, controlam os processos hidrodinâmicos, resultando em alterações nas curvas de retenção de água no solo e de condutividade hidráulica. O solo natural apresentou uma baixa condutividade hidráulica, quando comparada a determinada para o solo cultivado. Esse aumento deve-se provavelmente ao manejo do solo, necessários para o cultivo da palma forrageira. A estrutura do solo natural, caracterizada por valores relativamente baixos de condutividade hidráulica saturada, apresentam uma infiltrabilidade que favorece o escoamento superficial. A antropização do solo na área em estudo promoveu alterações nos atributos físicos dos solos, diminuindo a densidade e aumentando a porosidade. Consequentemente há o aumento da infiltração de água no solo e a redução do escoamento superficial no solo cultivado, corroborando com resultados obtidos em estudos anteriores.

Abstract The search for better living conditions has led the residents of the Brazilian semi-arid region to plant forage crops, leading to a gradual decrease in the native vegetation (Caatinga) of this region. The effects caused by the replacement of Caatinga with palm, for example, have been little studied, especially with regard to the physical and hydraulic properties of the soil. The objective of this study was to compare the physical-hydraulic characteristics of a litholic neosol in two areas having different vegetation cover: one area cultivated with forage palm (O. ficus-indica) and the other covered by native Caatinga. Differences in soil structure, especially in porosity, between the natural and cultivated soils were observed to control the hydrodynamic processes, resulting in changes in water retention curves and hydraulic conductivity. Natural soil presents low values of hydraulic conductivity when compared to those of cultivated soil. This increase is probably due to soil management required for forage palm cultivation. The natural soil structure, characterized by relatively low saturated hydraulic conductivity values, presents an infiltrability that favors surface runoff. Human activities in the study area have promoted changes in the soil’s physical attributes, decreasing density and increasing porosity. Consequently, there is an increase in water infiltration into the soil and a reduction of runoff in cultivated areas, confirming results obtained in previous studies.

ABSTRACT The CO2 emission from the soil surface, commonly referred to as soil CO2 efflux (ECO2) or soil respiration, is the sum of processes that include root respiration and microbial activity. Measuring this evolution is important to establish sustainable land use models and to estimate global fluxes of carbon, which affect climate change. Despite its importance, few measurements have been made in areas of the semiarid Brazilian Northeast region, and most of them were made using the alkali absorption method (AA), which can underestimate ECO2. Measurements using AA were compared to measurements using the infrared gas analyzer method (IRGA) over ten months (in rainy and dry seasons), during the day and night, in areas of Caatinga (xeric shrubland and thorn forest) and pasture in the Agreste region of the state of Pernambuco. The ECO2 measurements from AA varied little from night to day and throughout the year or in the rainy and dry seasons. However, those obtained from IRGA were higher in the rainy than in the dry season, but also without significant differences from day to night. The values of both methods were similar in the dry season, but in the rainy season they were higher with the IRGA. Therefore, AA seems to have little sensitivity to seasonal variations, in contrast with measurements from the IRGA, and it may underestimate soil ECO2 when it attains higher values. This result indicates that some of the soil ECO2 values determined in areas of the Brazilian semiarid region, and consequently annual C losses, may have been underestimated.

RESUMO Neossolos Regolíticos no Agreste Meridional de Pernambuco são utilizados para diversas atividades agrícolas, com destaque para a produção de feijão. Há uma variação expressiva na produção dessa cultura, possivelmente associada à presença de lamelas, que conferem comportamento hídrico distinto entre esses solos. Objetivou-se analisar as características macromorfológicas, micromorfológicas e físicas de Neossolos Regolíticos localizados no Agreste Meridional de Pernambuco, com a finalidade de se entender o comportamento hídrico desses solos. Foram coletados e analisados dois perfis de solos localizados nos municípios de Paranatama (P1 - sem lamela) e de São João (P2 - com lamela). Os resultados mostraram que nos atributos morfológicos (cor, textura, estrutura e consistência) não foram observadas diferenças expressivas entre os dois perfis de solos; os atributos físicos (teor de argila, macroporosidade, microporosidade, capacidade de campo e ponto de murcha permanente) apresentaram diferença significativa entre os horizontes dos perfis estudados; a micromorfologia indicou que a maior retenção de água no P2 é consequência da presença de zonas com empacotamento mais denso de seus componentes (empacotamento aglomerático) e expressividade das pontes de argila; e sugere-se adoção do termo “lamélico” pelo atual Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos (em 4º nível categórico) para diferenciação dos perfis estudados.

ABSTRACT Regosols in the Agreste Meridional region of Pernambuco, Brazil, are used for various agricultural activities, and prominent among them is production of common bean. An expressive variation is perceived in common bean crop yield, possibly associated with the presence of lamellae, which make for distinct water fluxes among these soils. The objective was to analyze the macro- and micromorphological, and physical characteristics of the Regosols located in the Agreste Meridional region of Pernambuco to understand the water fluxes in these soils. Two soil profiles, located in the municipalities of Paranatama (P1 - absence of lamellae) and São João (P2 - presence of lamellae) were collected and analyzed. In the morphological properties (color, texture, structure, and consistency) no significant differences between the two soil profiles were observed; the physical properties (clay content, macro- and microporosity, field capacity, and wilting point) exhibited significant differences among the horizons of the profiles studied; micromorphology indicates that greater water retention in P2 is a consequence of the presence of areas with denser packing of their components (agglomerative packing), and expressiveness of clay bridges; and we suggest adoption of the term “lamellic” within the current Brazilian System of Soil Classification (in the 4th categorical level) for differentiation of the soil profiles studied.

Um dos principais fatores de produção para as culturas é a disponibilidade de água no solo, de forma que a quantificação das entradas e saídas dessa água, por meio do método do balanço hídrico, pode ser um instrumento valioso para melhorar o manejo dado a ela. Desse modo, este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar os componentes do balanço hídrico (variação do armazenamento de água no solo, drenagem, ascensão capilar e evapotranspiração) e o perfil do sistema radicular em Brachiaria decumbens, em nove meses do ano de 2011 (março a novembro). Também foi avaliada a razão entre evapotranspiração (ET) e evapotranspiração de referência (ETo). Esta pesquisa foi realizada na fazenda Riacho do Papagaio, em São João, na mesorregião do Agreste do Estado de Pernambuco, onde foram instalados sensores automatizados para medição da umidade volumétrica do solo nas profundidades de 0,10; 0,20; 0,30; e 0,40 m. A precipitação pluvial foi monitorada por meio de um pluviógrafo automatizado instalado numa torre no centro da área. Para a determinação da drenagem e da ascensão capilar, foram realizados ensaios de infiltração para obtenção da condutividade hidráulica do solo, além da determinação da curva de retenção, em laboratório. A ET foi obtida como termo residual da equação do balanço hídrico e a ETo, pelo método de Penman-Monteith. O volume de controle utilizado para o balanço hídrico teve como limite superior a superfície do solo e como limite inferior a profundidade de 0,30 m. Também foi analisado o perfil do sistema radicular da braquiária, mensalmente. Observou-se que os períodos com elevadas pluviosidades resultaram num maior armazenamento de água no solo, em maiores valores de drenagem e de evapotranspiração. O fluxo de água no limite inferior (z = 0,30 m) do solo ocorreu somente no sentido descendente, sendo perdidos 103,14 mm de água por drenagem, o que representa 24,12 % de toda a água fornecida à cultura. A evapotranspiração total da Brachiaria decumbens Stapf foi de 324,96 mm, com valor médio de 1,2 mm d-1. A pastagem sofreu estresse hídrico, em quase todo período experimental, tendo em vista os valores da relação ET/ETo serem inferiores a 1. Os baixos valores da razão ET/ETo indicaram a necessidade de se realizar irrigação para se diminuir o déficit hídrico. No entanto, em razão dos elevados valores de drenagem, recomendam-se práticas de manejo que aumentem a retenção de água pelo solo.

One of the main crop production factors is soil water availability; therefore, determination of soil water inputs and outputs by the water balance method can be a valuable tool for improving crop management. The aim of this study was to assess soil water balance components in the field (soil water storage variations, drainage, capillary rise and evapotranspiration) and the root system profile of Brachiaria decumbens for nine months in 2011 (March to November). The ratio between evapotranspiration (ET) and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) was evaluated as well. The study was carried out in an experimental area at the "Riacho do Papagaio" farm, municipality of São João, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. TDR probes were set up at depths of 0.10, 0.20, 0.30 and 0.40 m to measure soil water content. Rainfall was monitored with a rain gauge installed on a tower in the center of the area. For the determination of drainage and capillary rise, infiltration tests were performed in the field to obtain the saturated hydraulic conductivity. The soil water retention curve was determined in the laboratory. ET was obtained as a residual term of the water balance equation and ETo was obtained by the Penman-Monteith method. The upper limit of the control volume used for water balance was the soil surface, and the lower limit was a plane parallel to the soil surface at a depth of 0.30 m. Each month, the root system profile was analyzed. It was observed that substantial soil water storage, drainage and ET values occurred in the high rainfall periods. Water flux through the plane of the lower limit (z = 0.30 m) occurred only downwards, with a loss of 103.14 mm by drainage, which is 24.12 % of the water supplied to the crop. The total value and average value for actual evapotranspiration of Brachiaria decumbens were 324.96 mm and 1.2 mm d-1 respectively. The grassland must have undergone water stress throughout the entire experimental period since the values of the ET/ETo ratio are much lower than one. The low value of the ET/ETo ratio indicates the need for irrigation to reduce water deficit. However, due to high drainage values, management practices for increasing soil water retention are recommended.

Objetivou-se determinar os componentes do balanço de energia (saldo de radiação, fluxos de calor latente, sensível e no solo), a evapotranspiração (ET) e a eficiência no uso de água (EUA) do feijão caupi cultivado sob condições de sequeiro. O experimento foi conduzido numa área de quatro hectares, localizada no CCA/UFPB, Areia, PB (6º58'12" S e 35º42'15" O e 620 m), durante o período de 22/07/2003 a 17/10/2003. Para a determinação dos componentes do balanço de energia e da ET utilizou-se o método da razão de Bowen, sendo que para isso foi instalada, no centro da área, uma torre micrometeorológica com sensores para medição da temperatura e da umidade relativa, em dois níveis acima do dossel do caupi, além de sensores para a medição do saldo de radiação, da radiação solar global, do fluxo de calor no solo e da precipitação pluvial. Verificou-se que o valor médio da razão saldo de radiação/radiação global (Rn/Rg) foi de 79%, sendo a Rn utilizada, em média, como 65% no fluxo de calor latente (LE/Rn), 23% como fluxo de calor sensível (H/Rn) e 12% como fluxo de calor no solo (G/Rn). Em relação à evapotranspiração, observou-se que o valor total durante o período experimental foi 330,7 mm e o médio de 3,8 mm dia-1. A produção do caupi foi de apenas 206,0 kg ha-1, com uma EUA baixa (0,06 kg m-3), a qual se deu, provavelmente, devido ao déficit hídrico ocorrido na fase reprodutiva.

The objective of this study was to assess the energy balance components (net radiation, latent heat flux, sensible heat flux and soil heat flux), evapotranspiration (ET) and water use efficiency (WUE) of cowpea grown under rainfed conditions. The experiment was conducted in a 4 ha area in the CCA, UFPB, belonging to the Municipality of Areia, PB (6º58' S, 35º41' W and 620 m) during the period from July, 22 2003 to October, 17 2003. To determine the energy balance components and ET, it was used the Bowen ratio method, and for that, the area was instrumented with a micrometeorological tower containing sensors for measuring air temperature and relative humidity at two levels above the canopy of cowpea. Measurements of net and global radiation, soil heat flux and rainfall were also made. The average value of the net radiation was 79% of the global solar radiation (Rn/Rg), in which 65% appeared as latent heat flux (LE/Rn), 23% as sensible heat flux (H/Rn) and 12% as soil heat flux (G/Rn). The total and average values for actual evapotranspiration were 330.7 mm and 3.8 mm day-1, respectively. The production of cowpea was only 206.0 kg ha-1 with low WUE (0.06 kg m-3), which occurred probably due to water deficit at reproductive stage.

Objetivando avaliar os efeitos provocados pela variabilidade temporal da precipitação pluvial sobre o desenvolvimento e produtividade da cultura do girassol (Helianthus annuus L.) em função da adubação nitrogenada e cultivares, realizaram-se experimentos nos anos de 1995, 1996, 1998, em Alagoinha-PB, e, no ano de 1998, em Esperança-PB, com a cultura do girassol, analisando-se quatro níveis de nitrogênio (0, 30, 60 e 90kg.ha-1), dois cultivares (uma precoce e uma tardia), em blocos casualizados, com 4 repetições. Durante a condução dos experimentos, foram analisados os estádios fenológicos, fitomassa, rendimento e precipitação pluvial durante o ciclo da cultura. Com relação aos resultados, verificou-se para o município de Alagoinha-PB uma precipitação pluvial média anual do período de 1.018,6mm. As respostas dos tratamentos adotados para a cultura sobre as variáveis analisadas estiveram na dependência da distribuição da precipitação pluvial durante as fases de desenvolvimento dos cultivares. Foi observada também uma grande variação na resposta do girassol em relação aos níveis de nitrogênio e às cultivares em função do tempo.

With the aim of analyzing the effects caused by temporal variability of rains over sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) tillage income and development in function of nitrogen fertilization and cultivars, experiments with sunflower tillage were performed in Alagoinha-PB in the years of 1995,1996,1998 in the municipal district of Esperança-PB in 1998. In this occasion four levels of nitrogen were verified (0, 30, 60 and 90kg.ha-1), two cultivars (one precocious and another late) in blocks at random with four repetitions. Beyond these experiments, some data about pluvial precipitation were analyzed. During the performance of the experiments we analyzed the tillage phenological stages, biomass accumulation and income and its components. In relation to the results, was verified in Alagoinha-PB an annual average rains of this period (1981 - 1999) around 1.018,6mm. The sunflower vegetative and reproductive stages have changed according to the distribution of rains during the tillage cycle. The adopted treatment answers for tillage over the analyzed variations were depending on the distribution of rains during the tillage development stages. There was also a big variation in the tillage answers in relation to the nitrogen levels and in the cultivars in function of weather.
