Abstract: This work aims to analyze the potential of the Photogrammetric Point Cloud (PPC) obtained from Remote Piloted Aircraft (RPA) optical images for detecting and obtaining tree heights in a loblolly pine plantation using a global maximum filter. The enhanced algorithm used in this study is then named STD (Single Tree Detection). Field surveys were conducted to count all the trees in the field (Forest Census) and measure the trees’ height with a vertex hypsometer. The results were faced to PCC outcomes. The detection rate (r) was equal to the precision rate (p), indicating that the algorithm reaches a high tree detection performance. In summary, the STD algorithm segmented 2,192 trees, representing 89% of trees recorded in the forest census. The retrieved tree height reached, on average, a height of 17.05 m, whereas slightly higher by the traditional forest inventory (17.42 m). The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and Bias were 47 cm (2.8%) and -37 cm (-2.2%), respectively. The Dunnett test showed that the tree height did not significantly differ between the results obtained by traditional forest inventory from those generated by the STD. It confirms the potential use of PPC for forest inventory procedures.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to obtain the stem volume from 3D-cloud points generated by terrestrial laser scanning in Eucalyptus stands. The processing started with using algorithms for tree detection in plantation (TDP) and stem filtering (Filter Dmax). Then, the acquisition of the total height was made semi-automatically and tridimensional modelling was performed through the adjustment of circumferences (AC) and the so-called triangulated irregular network (TIN). The results were compared with field data and conventional stem volume measurements. The detection accuracy was 100% for the trees in the plots while filtering reached 70% of the stem surface. The total height presented R2 = 0.98 and residuals less than 5%. The estimated volumes, analyzed in sections with a length of 2 m, were in average smaller than that obtained by the conventional Smalian method. The occlusion of points in the tree crown precluded obtaining the total stem volume.

A utilização do laser terrestre para levantamentos em povoamentos florestais tem como objetivo prover dados à modelagem tridimensional das árvores, no entanto, para que seja possível aplicar tal modelo, é necessário realizar a detecção dos pontos que fazem parte de árvores na varredura. O presente estudo propõe um método para a detecção de árvores a partir da nuvem de pontos 3D de plantios florestais. Inicialmente, procura-se reconstituir a distribuição espacial das árvores a partir da aplicação de um algoritmo de segmentação em uma seção transversal (1 metro) da nuvem de pontos. Em seguida, é apresentado um algoritmo para detectar a posição das árvores com base no padrão de alinhamento do povoamento. Por fim, os resultados obtidos são apresentados para validação pelo usuário da nuvem de pontos. O método apresentado foi testado em parcelas circulares instaladas em povoamentos de Eucalyptus spp. levantados por varreduras simples e múltiplas. Os resultados apontaram a necessidade de utilização de múltiplas estações de TLS para redução do efeito de sombreamento no levantamento das parcelas circulares. A aplicação do método de detecção de árvores em conjunto com a análise visual resultou na identificação de 100% das árvores a partir das nuvens de pontos das parcelas

Terrestrial LIDAR measurements in forest stands is often used to gather data for 3D tree models. However, such models require the detection of points representing trees in the scanning field. The present study offers a method for tree detection from a 3D point cloud of forest plantations. Initially the spatial distribution of trees is reconstructed by applying a segmentation algorithm in a transverse slice (1 meter) through the point cloud. This is followed by an algorithm for detecting tree position based on plantation stand row alignment. Finally, the results are presented for validation by the point cloud user. The methods were evaluated over young Eucalyptus spp. stands (i.e. 2, 4 and 5 years) exploring single and multiple positioning of the TLS device inside the circular plots. Results suggest that several TLS stations should be used to reduce shading effects in mapping circular plots. Employing the tree detection method with the visual analysis of point clouds of each plot were identified 100 % of the trees.

A varredura laserterrestre vem sendo testada e apontada como alternativa não destrutiva para mensuração de árvores. Variáveis dendrométricas podem ser obtidas a partir de técnicas de modelagem tridimensional. Porém, é necessária a filtragem dos dados para eliminar pontos que não representam a superfície do tronco. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo apresentar uma proposta de algoritmo, baseada em métodos já consolidados na literatura, para filtragem automática da nuvem de pontos do tronco da árvore. O estudo foi conduzido a partir de doze árvores inseridas em um povoamento inequiâneo de Pinusspp. Três estações laser foram utilizadas para o recobrimento de cada árvore. O algoritmo proposto, denominado de Filtro Distância Máxima (Filtro Dmax), realiza a filtragem do tronco de forma iterativa e em seções da nuvem de pontos. Para o melhor desempenho da automatização optou-se por um algoritmo parametrizado. O Filtro Dmax foi testado experimentalmente e os resultados apontaram que as superfícies dos troncos foram efetivamente filtradas até aproximadamente dois terços da altura total das árvores estudadas. A alta densidade de acículas impediu a representação das superfícies dos troncos no terço superior das árvores. A aplicação do Filtro Dmax não alterou as características geométricas dos troncos proporcionando dados à modelagem tridimensional.

The terrestrial laser scanner has been tested and pointed as non-destructive alternative for measuring trees. Dendrometric variables can be obtained with three-dimensional modeling techniques. However, data filtering is necessary to eliminate points that do not represent the surface to the trunk. This paper aimed at presenting a proposal of an algorithm, based on methods already established in the literature for automatic filtering of point clouds of tree trunk. The study was conducted from twelve trees inserted in a stand of Pinus spp with different ages. Three laser stations were used for surveying each tree. The proposed algorithm, called Maximum Distance Filter (Dmax Filter), filters iteratively the trunk by sections of the point cloud. For the best automation performance, we chose a parametric algorithm. The Dmax Filter was experimentally tested and the results showed that the surfaces of the trunks were effectively filtered up to approximately two thirds of the total height of the trees studied. The high density of leaves prevented the surface representation of the trunks in the upper third of the trees. The application of Dmax Filter did not change the geometric characteristics of the tree trunk and provided data to the three-dimensional modeling.

O uso de imagens de satélites tem sido muito eficaz para o monitoramento da dinâmica do uso e ocupação do solo ao longo do tempo. Para isso, as técnicas de detecção de mudança têm sido fortes aliadas. Essas técnicas têm múltiplas complexidades dependendo do objetivo que se pretende alcançar. No presente estudo, buscou-se avaliar a aplicação da técnica de detecção de mudanças no monitoramento do uso e ocupação do solo nas áreas atingidas pela catástrofe ambiental de novembro de 2008 em SC, na região do Morro do Baú. Foram utilizadas 04 (quatro) imagens do sensor Landsat de datas distintas entre 1992 e 2009 (pós-catástrofe). As imagens foram transformadas em índice de vegetação, com a utilização das bandas 7 e 4 para minimizar os efeitos atmosféricos e radiométricos. Máscara de sombreamento, utilizando o modelo digital do terreno, foi desenvolvida de modo a evitar falsas mudanças causadas por sombra. Concluiu-se que o georreferenciamento deve ser muito preciso na aplicação dessas técnicas de detecção de mudanças; que o índice de vegetação com bandas 7 e 4, bem como a máscara de sombreamento, foram eficazes na minimização de falsas mudanças e; que as técnicas aplicadas mostraram-se eficientes para detectar mudanças ocorridas nas áreas atingidas pela catástrofe.

The use of satellite images has been very effective for monitoring the dynamics of the land use and occupation over time. For this purpose , the change detection techniques have been strong allies. These techniques have multiple complexities depending on the objective to be achieved. This study aims to evaluate the technique for land use and land cover changing detection in areas affected by the environmental disaster of November 2008 in the region of Morro do Baú, Santa Catarina, Brazil. A total of 04 (four) images from different dates between 1992 and 2009 (post-disaster) were used. The images were processed in vegetation index using bands 7 and 4 in order to minimize atmospheric and radiometric distortions. Shadow mask, construted from the digital terrain model, was developed to avoid false changes caused by shade. It was concluded that the georeferencing must be very accurate in applying these techniques. The vegetation index by using bands 7 and 4and the shadow mask, were effective in minimizing false changes. It showed that the techniques applied are effective to detect changes in areas affected by the disaster.

Este trabalho, realizado em uma área com povoamento de Pinus taeda, teve por objetivo simular e mapear a influência do valor de impacto das atividades florestais na fragilidade potencial. Variáveis do solo, de declividade do terreno, valor de impacto e de cobertura vegetal foram utilizadas para gerar os mapas. Os resultados expressos pelo modelo adotado mostraram que as áreas mais frágeis apresentam em sua maioria declividades superiores a 75 % e textura que variam de arenosa a média, e as áreas menos frágeis apresentam predominantemente relevo plano (até 3 %) e textura argilosa. Quando simulado o impacto das atividades florestais sobre esse ambiente, verificou-se que na maior parte da área (78 %) todas as atividades florestais podem ser realizadas sem influência na degradação do meio ambiente e para algumas áreas (11 %) o ambiente foi considerado menos frágil, em razão da presença de cobertura vegetal.

This work was undertaken in a Pinus taeda stand. It was aimed to simulate and to map the influence of the impact of forestry activities on the potentialfragility of soil. The soil, slope, impact value and vegetal coverage were considered to generate the maps. The results showed that the areas with the highest potential fragility, have slopes greater than 75 % and texture ranging from sandy to loam. The leastfragile areas have predominantlyflat topography (up to 3 %) and clayey texture. When the impact of forestry activities was simulated, it was found that in most of the area (78 %) all forest activities can be performed without significantly degrading the environment. For some areas (11 %), with respect to the potentialfragility, the environment was considered less fragile due to the presence of vegetation cover.
