ABSTRACT The almond (Prunus dulcis) is an economically important crop in Portugal and is in the process of expansion. The assessment of the diversity of arthropods existing in the almond tree canopy becomes essential to know the trophic relationships that are established within it. The aim of this work was to identify the main arthropods present in the almond tree canopy in different soil management systems and water conditions. The trial was carried out in two almond groves, in Corujas, Macedo de Cavaleiros: rainfed and irrigated. They were subdivided into two treatments: 1) mobilized soil and 2) spontaneous vegetation, each with 3 blocks and 5 replications. Modalities 1 and 2 were installed in May 2022. Samples were collected fortnightly, between July and September 2022, performing 6 taps/tree/modality, using the tapping technique, to assess the auxiliary fauna and 20 leaves/ tree to monitor Monosteira unicostata (Hemiptera: Tingidae), Panonychus ulmi (Acari: Tetranychidae) and Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae). Posteriorly, the individuals were counted and their identification was made at order and family level, for the auxiliary fauna and at species level for the pests. The most frequent orders were Hymenoptera (30%) and Araneae (18%). There were no significant differences in the number of arthropods between treatments in the two almond groves. With regard to pests, T. urticae and M. unicostata predominated in both orchards, with greater abundance in the irrigated grove.

RESUMO A amendoeira (Prunus dulcis) é uma cultura economicamente importante em Portugal e atualmente encontra-se em fase de expansão. A avaliação da diversidade de artrópodes existente na copa da amendoeira torna-se essencial para conhecer as relações tróficas que se estabelecem no seu interior. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar os principais artrópodes presentes na copa das amendoeiras em diferentes sistemas de gestão do solo e condições hídricas. O ensaio foi conduzido em dois amendoais, em Corujas, Macedo de Cavaleiros: sequeiro e regadio. Eles foram subdivididos em dois tratamentos: 1) solo mobilizado e 2) vegetação espontânea, cada um com 3 blocos e 5 repetições. As modalidades 1 e 2 foram instaladas em maio de 2022. As amostras foram recolhidas quinzenalmente, entre julho e setembro de 2022, realizando-se 6 batidas/árvore/modalidade, na técnica das pancadas, para avaliar a fauna auxiliar e colhidas 20 folhas/árvore para monitorizar Monosteira unicostata (Hemiptera: Tingidae), Panonychus ulmi (Acari: Tetranychidae) e Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae). Posteriormente, contaram-se os indivíduos e a sua identificação foi feita ao nível de ordem e família para a fauna auxiliar e de espécie para as pragas. As ordens mais frequentes foram Hymenoptera (30%) e Araneae (18%). Não se verificaram diferenças significativas no número de artrópodes entre os tratamentos, nos dois amendoais. Quanto às pragas, predominaram T. urticae e M. unicostata nos dois amendoais, verificando-se maior abundância no amendoal de regadio.

ABSTRACT: This study analyzed clinical and cyto-histomorphological parameters of the ocular surface of Shih Tzu dogs, non-carriers and carriers of quantitative keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) at different stages. Thirty-five eyes from 23 male and female Shih Tzu dogs between two and eight years were evaluated in four groups: control group (CG - without KCS), mild KCS group (KCS1), moderate KCS group (KCS2), and severe KCS group (KCS3). Most clinical variables among KCS carrier groups worsened at the more advanced stages of the disease, with a negative correlation between the Schirmer tear test (STT-1) and tear film break-up time (TBUT). Squamous metaplasia, lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltrate, and decrease in conjunctival goblet cells on histopathological examination comprised disease severity parameters. Quantitative KCS non-carried Shih Tzu dogs have qualitative and tear film distribution changes. The cytomorphological exam is limited to evaluating the inflammatory infiltrate and quantifying conjunctival goblet cells. However, intermediate epithelial cells were higher in healthy eyes compared to eyes with KCS in Shih Tzu dogs. Also, moderate and severe KCS carrier Shih Tzu dogs have qualitative dysfunction of the tear film. KCS in Shih Tzu dogs is common and chronic and may be responsible for the loss of vision of these animals. Early identification of the disease and routine evaluation can improve these dogs’ quality of life and ocular health.

RESUMO: Este estudo analizou os parâmetros clinicos e cito-histomorfológicos da superfície ocular de cães da raça Shih Tzu, portadores e não portadores de ceratoconjuntivite seca quantitative (CCS) em diferentes estágios. Trinta e cinco olhos de 23 cães da raça Shih Tzu, machos e fêmeas, entre as idades de dois e oito anos foram avaliados em quatro grupos: grupo controle (GC - sem CCS), grupo CCS inicial (CCS1), grupo CCS moderada (CCS2) e grupo CCS severa (CCS3). A maioria das variáveis clínicas dentro os grupos portadores de CCS pioraram a medida que os estágios da doença avançam, com correlações negativas entre o teste lacrimal de Schirmer (TLS) e o tempo de ruptura do filme lacrimal (TRFL). Metaplasia escamosa, infiltrado inflamatório linfoplasmocítico e diminuição das células caliciformes no exame histopatológico compreenderam parâmetros de severidade da doença. Cães Shih Tzu não portadores de CCS quantitativa tem alterações qualitativas e na distribuição do filme lacrimal. O exame citomorfológico é limitado para a avaliação do infiltrado inflamatório e quantificação de células caliciformes. Entretanto, células inermediárias epiteliais são mais presents nos olhos saudáveis quando comparados aos olhos portadores de CCS em Shih Tzus. Também, Shih Tzus portadores de CCS nos estágios moderados e severos possuem disfunções qualitativas da lágrima. A CCS em Shih Tzu é comum, crônica e pode ser responsável pela perda de visão dos animais. A identificação precoce da doença e avaliações rotineiras podem aumentar a qualidade de vida e a saúde ocular nesses cães.

Resumo A determinação dos riscos relativos de extinção dos táxons ameaçados é importante para o delineamento de ações de recuperação e para o direcionamento dos investimentos em conservação. O Brasil é o país que possui o maior número de táxons ameaçados de aves, no entanto, informações sobre aspectos demográficos são inexistentes para a maioria deles. Neste trabalho são apresentadas estimativas de densidades populacionais, baseadas no método de amostragem por distância, para três táxons ameaçados de extinção endêmicos do Centro de Endemismo Pernambuco (CEP), a região mais degradada de toda a Mata Atlântica. Os táxons analisados foram a choca-lisa Thamnophilus aetiops distans (Ameaçada), o flautim-marrom Schiffornis turdina intermedia (Vulnerável) e a maria-de-barriga-branca Hemitriccus griseipectus naumburgae (Vulnerável). Os números de indivíduos/ha estimados para um fragmento de floresta de aproximadamente 1000 ha foram respectivamente 0,21, 0,14 e 0,73. Com isto, foi possível confirmar a premissa de que mesmo táxons classificados em uma mesma categoria de ameaça com base apenas em informações de hábitats podem possuir densidades populacionais bastante divergentes e portanto diferentes graus de riscos de extinção. Embora as densidades populacionais possam variar entre fragmentos, a extrapolação destes dados para toda a área do CEP confirmou a classificação de Vulnerável para o flautim-marrom e indicou as categorias Vulnerável e Pouco Preocupante para a choca-lisa e para a maria-de-barriga-branca, sugerindo que para as duas últimas, as classificações atuais baseadas nos tamanhos das suas Áreas de Ocupação (Ameaçada e Vulnerável) devem prevalecer.

Abstract Determining the relative risks of extinction of declining taxa is important to delineate conservation priorities and to guide the investments in conservation. Brazil concentrates the greatest number of endangered avian taxa on Earth, yet demographic information is lacking for most of them. Here we present distance-sampling population density estimates for three endangered bird taxa endemic to the Pernambuco Endemism Center (PEC), the most critically disturbed Atlantic Forest region. The analyzed taxa were the White-shouldered Antshrike Thamnophilus aetiops distans (Endangered), the Brown-winged Mourner Schiffornis turdina intermedia (Vulnerable), and the White-bellied Tody-tyrant Hemitriccus griseipectus naumburgae (Vulnerable). The estimated numbers of individuals/ha in an approximately 1,000 ha forest fragment were 0.21, 0.14, and 0.73, respectively. Our findings corroborated the premise that even taxa classified in similar threat categories based on habitat characteristics alone can have different population densities and consequently, divergent risks of extinction. Although population densities can vary among fragments, the extrapolation of our data to the whole PEC confirmed the Vulnerable status of the Brown-winged Mourner, and indicated the Vulnerable and Least Concern categories for the White-shouldered Antshrike and for the White-bellied Tody-tyrant, suggesting that for the two later taxa, the current classifications (Endangered and Vulnerable) based on their Areas of Occupancy must prevail.

RESUMO Apesar de que a grande diferenciação que existe no ensino superior brasileiro seja amplamente conhecida, e que diferentes tipos de instituições tenham objetivos e produzam resultados também distintos, nas áreas de ensino de graduação, pós-graduação e pesquisa, essas diferenças não são reconhecidas com todas as suas implicações pela legislação nem pelo sistema de avaliação adotado pelo Ministério da Educação no Brasil. O público, formado por estudantes atuais e futuros, assim como por seus empregadores, tampouco é informado a respeito dessas diferenças. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar uma proposta de classificação ou tipologia das instituições de educação superior brasileiras que identifique com clareza essas diferenças, e que possa servir de base para um sistema de informações e procedimentos de avaliação que tomem em conta essa variedade de características, objetivos e resultados. Isso é feito agrupando-se instituições que tenham perfis semelhantes, do ponto de vista de seu porte, natureza jurídica e envolvimento com atividades de ensino e pós-graduação, e verificando-se até que ponto essas diferenças de tipos correspondem também a diferenças em relação às características de professores, alunos, áreas de atuação e atuação. Na última parte discutimos algumas implicações dessa tipologia para o sistema de avaliação da educação superior e, mais amplamente, para a melhoria da qualidade e desempenho da educação superior do país como um todo.

ABSTRACT Although the great differentiation that exists in Brazilian higher education is widely known, and even if different types of institutions have different objectives and produce different results in the undergraduate, graduate and research levels, the full implication of these differences is not recognized by the legislation or by the evaluation system adopted by the Ministry of Education in Brazil. Neither is the public, i.e., current and future students and their employers, informed of these differences. The objective of this work is to present a classification or typology proposal for Brazilian higher education institutions that clearly identifies these differences, and that can serve as a basis for a system of information and evaluation procedures that take into account this variety of characteristics, objectives and results. This is done by grouping institutions that have similar profiles, from the point of view of size, legal status and involvement with teaching and graduate activities, and assessing the extent to which differences in type correspond to differences in the characteristics of faculty, students, areas of activity and performance. In the final part, we discuss some implications of this typology for the higher education evaluation system and, more broadly, for improving the quality and performance of higher education in the country as a whole.

Abstract Volumetric muscle loss causes functional weakness and is often treated with muscle grafts or implant of biomaterials. Extracellular matrices, obtained through tissue decellularization, have been widely used as biological biomaterials in tissue engineering. Optimal decellularization method varies among tissues and have significant impact on the quality of the matrix. This study aimed at comparing the efficacy of four protocols, that varied according to the temperature of tissue storage and the sequence of chemical reagents, to decellularize murine skeletal muscles. Tibialis anterior muscles were harvested from rats and were frozen at -20°C or stored at room temperature, followed by decellularization in solutions containing EDTA + Tris, SDS and Triton X-100, applied in different sequences. Samples were analyzed for macroscopic aspects, cell removal, decrease of DNA content, preservation of proteins and three-dimensional structure of the matrices. Processing protocols that started with incubation in SDS solution optimized removal of cells and DNA content and preserved the matrix ultrastructure and composition, compared to those that were initiated with EDTA + Tris. Freezing the samples before decellularization favored cell removal, regardless of the sequence of chemical reagents. Thus, to freeze skeletal muscles and to start decellularization with 1% SDS solution showed the best results.

Abstract: This article analyzes and discusses about the fundamental reason on why university students of the faculty of architecture, of a private university in Colombia, do not make appropriate use of time. The study shows the causes or distractions that prevent their rationalization or intelligent management, being this an important and basic resource for the successful professionals of this new millennium. The article is of a descriptive-reflective type, whose objective is to demonstrate the importance of the use of time. Based on the theoretical background and empirical results obtained in the investigation, it is concluded that distribution and use of time must be appropriately planned and students must me conscious that use of time can always be optimized.

Resumen: Este artículo analiza y discute acerca de la razón fundamental por la que los estudiantes universitarios de la facultad de arquitectura de una universidad privada de Colombia, no utilizan bien el tiempo, en todas sus dimensiones. Se estudian las causas o distractores que impiden su racionalización o manejo inteligente, siendo este recurso importante y básico para los profesionales exitosos de este nuevo milenio. El artículo es de tipo descriptivo-reflexivo, cuyo objetivo es el demostrar la importancia del uso del tiempo. Basado en los antecedentes teóricos y resultados empíricos obtenidos en la investigación, se concluye que se debe planificar en forma adecuada la distribución y uso del tiempo y ser consciente que siempre se puede mejorar el uso del tiempo.

RESUMO Este documento foi desenvolvido para trazer informações pertinentes à prática nefrológica em relação ao conhecimento sobre o acometimento renal da COVID-19, conduta frente aos casos de injúria renal aguda e orientações práticas sobre a provisão do suporte dialítico.Como as informações sobre a COVID-19 evoluem a uma velocidade jamais vista na ciência médica, as orientações apresentadas, embora baseadas em evidências científicas recentes, referem-se ao momento presente. Essas orientaços poderão ser atualizadas à medida que dados publicados e outras informações relevantes venham a ser disponibilizadas.

ABSTRACT We produced this document to bring pertinent information to the practice of nephrology, as regards to the renal involvement with COVID-19, the management of acute kidney injury cases, and practical guidance on the provision of dialysis support.As information on COVID-19 evolves at a pace never before seen in medical science, these recommendations, although based on recent scientific evidence, refer to the present moment. The guidelines may be updated when published data and other relevant information become available.

RESUMO Este artigo traz parte dos resultados de uma pesquisa que, desenvolvida durante 2014 e 2015, procurou construir um diagnóstico sobre políticas educacionais para o ensino médio - especialmente as curriculares -, valendo-se, para tanto, de informações pesquisadas junto aos estados brasileiros e ao Distrito Federal, os maiores responsáveis pela oferta desse nível de ensino. Os dados foram coletados por meio de: documentos e disposições legais vigentes; questionários às equipes responsáveis pelo ensino médio nas secretarias de educação de todos os estados do país; e entrevistas qualitativas realizadas junto a uma amostra de dez secretarias dentre as 27. Neste texto especificamente, o objetivo é apresentar e analisar algumas iniciativas que os entes federados têm desenvolvido para atrair e manter os jovens nesse nível de ensino.

ABSTRACT This article presents part of the results of a study conducted in 2014 and 2015. It sought to build a diagnosis of educational policies for secondary school, especially regarding the curricula, using information collected from the Brazilian states and the Federal District, those with the greatest responsibility for the education offered at this level. The data were collected through: current legal provisions and documents; questionnaires sent to the teams responsible for this level of education at the secretariats of education in all states in the country; and, qualitative interviews conducted with a sample of ten, of the 27, Secretariats of Education in the country. This text aims specifically at presenting and analyzing some initiatives that the federated entities have developed to attract and retain young people in this level of education.

RESUMEN Este artículo trae parte de los resultados de una investigación que, desarrollada durante 2014 y 2015, buscó construir un diagnóstico sobre políticas educativas para la enseñanza media -especialmente las curriculares-, valiéndose para ello de informaciones recogidas en los estados brasileños y el Distrito Federal, los mayores responsables de la oferta de ese nivel de enseñanza. Los datos fueron recolectados por medio de: documentos y disposiciones legales vigentes; cuestionarios a los equipos responsables por ese nivel de enseñanza en las secretarías de educación de todos los estados del país; y entrevistas cualitativas realizadas en una muestra de diez secretarías entre las 27. En este texto específicamente, el objetivo es presentar y analizar algunas iniciativas que las entidades federadas han desarrollado para atraer y mantener a los jóvenes en ese nivel de enseñanza.

RÉSUMÉ Cet article reprend une partie des résultats d’une recherche menée entre 2014 et 2015 visant à élaborer un diagnostic à propos des politiques éducatives pour l’enseignement secondaire et, plus particulièrement, des programmes d´études Les informations apportées proviennent des états brésiliens et du District Fédéral, les plus grands responsables de l’offre de ce niveau d’enseignement. Les données recueillies sont issues de documents et de dispositions légales, de questionnaires auprès des équipes ayant à charge ce niveau d´enseignement au sein des secrétariats de l’éducation de tous les états du pays, ainsi que d’entretiens de type qualitatif réalisés à partir d’un échantillon de dix secrétariats parmi les 27 existants. L’objectif spécifique de ce texte est de présenter et d’analyser certaines initiatives que les collectivités fédérées ont développées pour attirer et maintenir les jeunes dans ce niveau d’enseignement.

Os aneurismas da artéria esplénica são raros, mas constituem cerca de 60% de todos os aneurismas arteriais viscerais. A grande maioria dos doentes (80%) é assintomática sendo o diagnóstico realizado através de um achado em exames de imagem. O risco de rotura estimado é de 3% a 10%, com uma taxa de mortalidade associada à rotura de 25 a 70%. Critérios para tratamento eletivo incluem aneurismas sintomáticos, aneurismas com dimensões superiores a 20 mm ou com o aumento rápido do diâmetro. Adicionalmente, aneurismas diagnosticados em pacientes com hipertensão portal ou mulheres em idade fértil também têm indicação para tratamento, independentemente do diâmetro. O tratamento endovascular é a primeira linha em doentes com aneurismas da artéria esplenica, e inclui várias opções, como embolização com coils, oclusão com recurso a balões destacáveis e colocação de endoprótese vascular. Esta última é mais adequada para aneurismas localizados proximalmente e sua principal vantagem consiste no potencial para preser- var o fluxo arterial esplénico e a função esplénica. É de salientar que a colocação de endoprótese para o tratamento de aneurismas da artéria esplénica está pouco descri- ta na literatura, consistindo sobretudo em pequenas séries de casos, todas com menos de 10 doentes. Trata-se de um procedimento que pode ser tecnicamente desafiante devido à tortuosidade da artéria esplênica. Não há resultados de follow-up a longo prazo na literatura. Neste artigo descrevemos dois casos de reparação de aneurisma da artéria utilizando stent grafts, com um follow-up máximo de 8 anos. Atingiu-se sucesso técnico em ambos os casos, sem crescimento pós-procedimento, endoleak, kink- ing, migração, re-intervenções ou outras complicações. Como conclusão, os dados na literatura sobre o uso de stents recobertos em aneurismas da artéria esplénica são escas- sos. Os resultados destes dois casos no nosso centro são encorajadores com um período de seguimento excecional

Splenic artery aneurysms are rare, but constitute nearly 60% of all visceral arterial aneurysms. Most patients (80%) are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. Rupture risk is estimated in 3%-10%, with a mortality rate of 25-70%. Elective treatment criteria include symptomatic patients, aneurysms larger than 2 cm in diameter or with rapid enlarge- ment and aneurysms of any size diagnosed in patients with portal hypertension or women of childbearing age; Endovascular treatment is first line of treatment in patients with splenic artery aneurysms, and include several options such as coil embolization, detachable balloon occlusion and stent graft placement. The latter is more suitable for proxi- mally located aneurysms and its main advantage is the potential to preserve splenic blood flow and splenic function. It is noteworthy that stent graft placement to treat splenic artery aneurysms is rarely described in the literature with the largest series having 10 cases, and can be technically challenging due to splenic artery tortuosity. There are no long term results in the literature. In this paper we describe two cases of splenic artery aneurysm repair using stent grafts, with a maximum follow-up of 8 years. We achieved technical success in both cases, with no post-procedure growth, endoleak, kinking, migration re-interven- tion or other complications. As a conclusion, there is paucity of data on the use of stent grafts in splenic artery aneurysms, however our single center small series results are encouraging with a considerable follow-up period.

ABSTRACT Objectives Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are involved in the pathogenesis and complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). Gestational DM (GDM) is characterized by increased glycemia and oxidative stress, which are factors associated with high serum AGE concentrations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of a serum fluorescence AGE (F-AGE) method as a screening tool for gestational diabetes. Subjects and methods Serum samples from 225 GDM patients and 217 healthy pregnant women (healthy controls) were diluted 50-fold in phosphate-buffered saline, and the AGEs were estimated by fluorometric analysis (λEx 350 nm/ λEm 440 nm). Results No significant (P > 0.05) differences in AGE concentrations, expressed in Arbitrary Units (UA/mL × 104), were observed in the women with GDM or in the healthy controls. Furthermore, F-AGE concentrations did not change significantly during the pregnancy (12-32 weeks of gestation). Only the GDM group had a positive correlation (r = 0.421; P < 0.001) between F-AGEs and serum creatinine concentrations. Conclusion It was not possible to distinguish women with gestational diabetes from the healthy controls on the basis of serum F-AGE concentrations.

RESUMO: Os alimentos funcionais têm sido empregados como adjuvantes no tratamento do câncer de mama. Neste estudo avaliaram-se as respostas hematológicas e bioquímicas clínicas à ação de um alimento funcional administrado a cadelas com diagnóstico de neoplasia mamária maligna. Após a mastectomia, 16 cadelas foram divididas em dois grupos: suplementadas (S) e não suplementadas (NS) com um composto comercial contendo Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mananoligossacarídeos e nutracêuticos. Ambos grupos receberam tratamento quimioterápico com doxorrubicina e carboplatina, alternadamente, em intervalos de 21 dias, por oito sessões, totalizando 168 dias de tratamento. As avaliações clínicas e laboratoriais foram realizadas nos momentos de aplicação do tratamento. Os resultados dos perfis hematológico (hemograma, leucograma e plaquetograma) e bioquímico sérico (ureia, creatinina, albumina, bilirrubina total e direta, alanina aminotransferase, fosfatase alcalina e gama glutamiltransferase - GGT) foram analisados pelo teste de Kruskall Wallis. No grupo S comprovou-se elevação do peso corporal e não foram observados transtornos gastrointestinais ou outros sinais de alteração clínica ao longo do tratamento. Diferentemente no grupo NS, ocorreu perda de peso e alterações clínicas, como diarreia e vômito. No quadro hematológico, constatou-se leucopenia por linfopenia no grupo de cadelas NS e preservação do valores dentro dos parâmetros considerados normais para a espécie no grupo S. Dentre todas as variáveis da bioquímica clínica, constatou-se apenas a elevação da atividade sérica da GGT nos animais do grupo NS, sem alterações no grupo S. Conclui-se que cadelas com neoplasia mamária quando suplementadas com com alimento funcional imunoestimulante apresentam melhor condição clínica, hematológica e dos níveis bioquímicos, particularmente da GGT.

ABSTRACT: Functional foods have been used as adjuvant for breast cancer treatment of bitches. The aim of the present study was to evaluate hematological and clinical biochemistry response in female dogs diagnosed with malignant mammary tumors and supplemented with functional food. After the mastectomy, 16 bitches were divided into two groups: supplemented (S) and none supplemented (NS) with a commercial product of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, mannanoligosaccharides and nutraceuticals. Chemotherapy with doxorubicin and carboplatin was performed alternately at intervals of 21 days for eight sessions during 168 days of treatment. Clinical and laboratorial assessments was made at the treatment moments. The results of the hemogram (erythrogram, leukogram and platelet count) and serum biochemistry (urea, creatinine, albumin, total and direct bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and gamma glutamyltransferase - GGT) were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis test. In the S group, increase body weight was observed, but gastrointestinal disorders or other clinical disorders were not detected over the treatment. In the NS group, loss of weight and clinical disorders were observed. All hematology parameters were normal in the S group; however, leukopenia and lymphopenia were detected in the bitches of the NS group. Among all the clinical biochemistry parameters tested, only serum GGT was increased in the NS group, with no changes in the S group. In conclusion, female dogs with mammary tumor supplemented with immunostimulant functional food have better clinical condition, they demonstrate normal levels of hematological and biochemical exams, particularly GGT.

ABSTRACT The taxonomic identification of micromammals might be complicated when the study material is fragmented, as it is the case with pellets and fossil material. On the other hand, tooth morphology generally provides accurate information for species identification. Teeth preserve notably well, retaining their original morphology, unlike skulls and mandibles, which can get crushed or have missing parts. Here, we explored a geometric morphometrics approach (GM) to identify fragmented specimens of two sympatric Calomys Waterhouse, 1837 species - Calomys tener (Winge, 1888) and Calomys expulsus (Lund, 1841) - using the morphology of intact molars as the basis for identification. Furthermore, we included some specimens of uncertain taxonomic identification to test their affinities and the utility of the shape of the molar to identify incomplete specimens. We evaluated the variations in the shape of the first upper molar (M1) among 46 owl pellets specimens of Calomys, including C. expulsus (n = 15), C. tener (n = 15), and unidentified specimens treated as Calomys sp. (n = 16) through GM analysis using 17 landmarks. The data was explored using PCA, PERMANOVA, and Discriminant analyses over the Procrustes residuals matrix were applied to evaluate inter- and intraspecific shape differences. Also, we evaluated whether allometric shape differences could impact the data, but found no evidence of a correlation between size and shape. Our results support that shape differences in the M1 are effective for discriminating between C. tener and C. expulsus. Moreover, the unidentified specimens do not represent a third shape but could be identified with confidence either as C. tener or C. expulsus. Our results show that even with fragmentary materials, GM is a feasible and useful tool for exploring inter-specific shape differences and assisting in taxonomic identification as a complement to traditional qualitative description of diagnostic features in poorly preserved specimens.

AbstractWastewater treatment by deactivated and activated sludge was investigated to evaluate the removal of estrogens [estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2)] via adsorption and degradation. Different treatment conditions were used, including three mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS) concentrations, three methanol concentrations (carbon source) and three types of aqueous media (water, synthetic solution, and supernatant). The E2 was degraded the fastest by the bacterial community. In all cases the removal rate increased when the initial MLVSS and methanol concentrations increased and when the macro- and micronutrients were present in the solution. In the experiments with deactivated sludge, the synthetic compound EE2 was more easily removed via sorption. The bacterial communities of the activated sludge were studied, which indicated a similarity of more than 75% between the different samples. A similarity of only 50% was found between the activated and deactivated sludges.
