Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) is known for its bioactive compounds with high antioxidant potential and pharmacological properties, such as antibacterial, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory. These properties are attributed to the presence of (poly)phenolic compounds. In the literature there is no extraction of these compounds with a totally non-toxic solvent, capable of applying the extract directly to the food. This work aimed to optimize the extraction conditions of bioactive compounds from the rosemary leaves using water as solvent. According to the analysis of variance parameters, a cubic model of high order of significance was obtained with adjusted R2 (R squared) > 0.947. The optimal conditions of the antioxidant potential for conventional and ultrasonic agitation were: temperature 70 °C, 30 min of extraction and the solvent/solute ratio of 25, resulting in an antioxidant potential of 6861 and 7126 µmol L−1 Trolox, respectively. The electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI(−)-MS/MS) analysis showed the presence of antioxidant compounds such as: carnosol (m/z 329.20), rosmanol (m/z 345.03) and rosmarinic (m/z359.14) acids. The response surface methodology evaluated the influence of the main parameters of the bioactive compounds extraction from rosemary using only water as solvent, in addition to the use of less time and sample mass, resulting in lower cost.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the intra- and interexaminer reproducibility of measurements of the resistance and static and dynamic compliance of the respiratory system in patients on mechanical ventilation. Methods: This was an analytical study conducted with individuals aged ≥ 18 years who were on invasive mechanical ventilation and had no clinical diagnosis of respiratory system disease and/or chest abnormality. Three measurements of respiratory mechanics were performed with a 1-minute interval between them. The first and third measurements were performed by examiner A, the second by examiner B. The values for the resistance and static and dynamic compliance of the respiratory system were compared using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: A total of 198 measurements of respiratory mechanics were performed for 66 patients on mechanical ventilation. The patients had a mean age of 52.6 ± 18.6 years and a mean body mass index of 21.6 ± 2.1kg/m2; a surgical profile (61.5%) and female sex (53.8%) were predominant. Mean values were obtained for the three measurements of respiratory system resistance (A1: 15.7 ± 6.8cmH2O/L/s; B1: 15.7 ± 6.4cmH2O/L/s and A2: 15.9 ± 6.2cmH2O/L/s), respiratory system static compliance (A1: 42.1 ± 13.7mL/cmH2O; B1: 42.4 ± 14.6mL/cmH2O and A2: 42.2 ± 14.5mL/cmH2O) and respiratory system dynamic compliance (A1: 21.3 ± 7.3mL/cmH2O; B1: 21.4 ± 7.5mL/cmH2O and A2: 21.3 ± 6.2mL/cmH2O). The intraclass correlation coefficient was also calculated for respiratory system resistance (R = 0.882 and p = 0.001; R = 0.949 and p = 0.001 - interexaminer A1 versus B and B versus A2, respectively; R = 0.932 and p = 0.001 - intraexaminer); respiratory system static compliance (R = 0.951 and p = 0.001; R = 0.958 and p = 0.001 - interexaminer A1 versus B and B versus A2, respectively; R = 0.965 and p = 0.001 - intraexaminer) and respiratory system dynamic compliance (R = 0.957 and p = 0.001; R = 0.946 and p = 0.001 - interexaminer A1 versus B and B versus A2, respectively; R = 0.926 and p = 0.001 - intraexaminer). Conclusion: The measurements of resistance and static and dynamic compliance of the respiratory system show good intra- and interexaminer reproducibility for ventilated patients.

Abstract We investigated fat women’s perceptions of their own bodies and their experiences with weight-related discriminations, and how these situations affected their well-being. Thirty-nine obese women were interviewed, and three axes of analysis were identified: (1) repercussions of being fat, (2) living with a fat body, and (3) am I a person or just a fat body? These axes were composed of eight themes which had similar meaning or complemented each other. The results showed our participants had mechanisms to diminish the magnitude of their stigmatized bodies (e.g., attempting to lose weight and changing their current food choices). Participants also reported being fat had physical and psychological consequences for them. Most notably, their larger bodies influenced their self-evaluation, making them feel devalued, unlovable, incapable, and incomplete. They reported stigmatizing experiences in familiar situations, at the workplace and in public spaces, and reported being stigmatized by both close and unknown individuals, including healthcare professionals. These professionals were reported to treat patients disrespectfully, which urges attention to health care inequalities for obese people. Our results stress stigmatizing attitudes towards fat people and their own considerations about themselves have negative consequences in their physical and mental well-being.

Abstract Early age acute leukemia (EAL) shows a high frequency of KMT2A-rearrangements (KMT2A-r). Previous investigations highlighted double-strand breaks arising from maternal exposure to xenobiotics during pregnancy as a risk factor for EAL and KMT2A-r. In this case-control study, we investigated the relationship between EAL and genetic variants of the nonhomologous end-joining (XRCC6 rs5751129, XRCC4 rs6869366 and rs28360071), since they might affect DNA repair capacity, leading to KMT2A-r and leukemogenesis. Samples from 577 individuals (acute lymphoblastic leukemia-ALL, n=164; acute myeloid leukemia-AML, n=113; controls, n=300) were genotyped. No significant association was found for rs5751129 and rs6869366, whereas rs28360071 was associated with an increased risk for ALL with KMT2A-r (IIxID: OR - Odds ratio 2.23, CI 1.17-4.25, p=0.014). Bone marrow samples from ALL patients showed a higher expression of XRCC4 compared to AML patients (p=0.025). Human Splicing Finder 3.1 predicted that the deleted allele of rs28360071 is potentially associated with the activation of a 5’ cryptic splice site in intron 3 of XRCC4. The sequencing of cDNA did not show any differences on the splicing process for the rs28360071 genotypes. Our results suggest that the deleted allele for rs28360071 increases the risk for ALL with KMT2A-r, but not by modifying the XRCC4 expression levels or its structure.

Abstract When exposure of the pulp to external environment occurs, reparative dentinogenesis can be induced by direct pulp capping to maintain pulp tissue vitality and function. These clinical situations require the use of materials that induce dentin repair and, subsequently, formation of a mineralized tissue. Objective: This work aims to assess the effect of tricalcium silicate cements and mineral trioxide aggregate cements, including repairing dentin formation and inflammatory reactions over time after pulp exposure in Wistar rats. Methodology: These two biomaterials were compared with positive control groups (open cavity with pulp tissue exposure) and negative control groups (no intervention). The evaluations were performed in three stages; three, seven and twenty-one days, and consisted of an imaging (nuclear medicine) and histological evaluation (H&E staining, immunohistochemistry and Alizarin Red S). Results: The therapeutic effect of these biomaterials was confirmed. Nuclear medicine evaluation demonstrated that the uptake of 99mTc-Hydroxymethylene diphosphonate (HMDP) showed no significant differences between the different experimental groups and the control, revealing the non-occurrence of differences in the phosphocalcium metabolism. The histological study demonstrated that in mineral trioxide aggregate therapies, the presence of moderate inflammatory infiltration was found after three days, decreasing during follow-ups. The formation of mineralized tissue was only verified at 21 days of follow-up. The tricalcium silicate therapies demonstrated the presence of a slight inflammatory infiltration on the third day, increasing throughout the follow-up. The formation of mineralized tissue was observed in the seventh follow-up day, increasing over time. Conclusions: The mineral trioxide aggregate (WhiteProRoot®MTA) and tricalcium silicate (Biodentine™) present slight and reversible inflammatory signs in the pulp tissue, with the formation of mineralized tissue. However, the exacerbated induction of mineralized tissue formation with the tricalcium silicate biomaterial may lead to the formation of pulp calcifications

In the last few years some farmers of soybeans have been testing a sowing technique called "Cross Sowing". The adoption of cross-sowing in soybean cultivation may represent a viable alternative for producers. The objective of this study was to analyze the cross-sowing system in the soybean crop, verifying the degree of technology adopted by the producers and the results achieved by the adoption of the technique in the production areas. The methodology used was the Literature Review, performing a detailed analysis on the importance of the soybean crop for Brazilian agribusiness, as well as its growth and development in the agricultural production environment for a better understanding of the cross sowing system. In view of these considerations, it is worth noting that the cross-sowing system is a promising technique. However, new experiments should be conducted verifying the real answers of this new arrangement of plants, taking into account the particularities of each producer.

ABSTRACT A new coccidian species parasitizing white-necked thrushes Turdus albicollis Vieillot, 1818 is described from the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, in Southeastern Brazil. Isospora machadoae sp. nov. has oocysts that are sub-spherical, 22.2 × 21.2 µm, with bilayered wall, ~1.3 μm thick. Outer layer is rough with micropyle and micropyle cap. Oocyst residuum is absent, but one or two polar granules are present. Sporocysts are ellipsoidal, 13.3 × 9.7 µm. The Stieda body is flattened to half-moon-shaped and substieda body rounded. Sporocyst residuum is present, composed of scattered spherules of different sizes. Sporozoites are vermiform with a refractile body and a nucleus. These parasitized thrushes had no apparent clinical signs of coccidiosis or high densities of oocysts in feces. This condition may be associated with a specific low pathogenicity of I. machadoae sp. nov. and/or with the conserved habitat of these birds, which ensures the ecological niches and thus the immunocompetence to wildlife.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Angiosarcomas are rare pathologies, and their appearance in the small intestine is extremely unusual. Case report: Female patient presenting vomiting, colic, abdominal distension and peritoneal irritation. An exploratory laparotomy and an enterectomy were performed. Histopathology revealed vascular neoplasm; immunohistochemistry, markers CD31, p53 and cell proliferation antigen Ki-67. The patient developed diffuse sarcomatosis and died two months after the onset of symptoms. Conclusion: This case demonstrates the difficulty in early diagnosing this pathology, due to its nonspecific clinical presentation. The disease aggressiveness, its unestablished predisposing factors and the controversy around the adequate treatment engender the poor prognosis.

ABSTRACT Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors years after recovery from an initial acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus. Most often, polio survivors experience a gradual new weakening in muscles that were previously affected by the polio infection. The actual incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in individuals suffering from PPS is not known. However, there is a reason to suspect that individuals with PPS might be at increased risk. Method A search for papers was made in the databases Bireme, Scielo and Pubmed with the following keywords: post polio syndrome, cardiorespiratory and rehabilitation in English, French and Spanish languages. Although we targeted only seek current studies on the topic in question, only the relevant (double-blind, randomized-controlled and consensus articles) were considered. Results and Discussion Certain features of PPS such as generalized fatigue, generalized and specific muscle weakness, joint and/or muscle pain may result in physical inactivity deconditioning obesity and dyslipidemia. Respiratory difficulties are common and may result in hypoxemia. Conclusion Only when evaluated and treated promptly, somE patients can obtain the full benefits of the use of respiratory muscles aids as far as quality of life is concerned.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Changes in fatty acid profiles have been associated with several pathophysiological processes. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) data monitoring of selected ions was used with principal components analysis (PCA), revealing a set of relevant ions for quantification and characterization of fatty acids. This protocol was successfully applied to the analyses of fatty acids in different human blood lipids, allowing the quantification of several fatty acids and revealing their unsaturation numbers. Moreover the presences of contaminants, artifacts and co-eluitions in the chromatogram were also revealed without any additional analyses. Thus, fatty acid constituents of triglycerides, phospholipids and esters of cholesterol present in plasma and erythrocyte membranes were accurately determined, with repeatability, low limits of determination and of quantification.

OBJECTIVE : Investigate breeding sites with host snails and autochthonous human cases of schistosomiasis. METHODS : Between July 2010 and September 2012 were performed: (1) malacological survey searching for breeding sites, collection and identification of Biomphalaria snails positive for Schistosoma mansoni in Recife, PE, Northeastern Brazil; (2) prevalence survey in 2,718 schoolchildren aged from seven to 14 years old to identify cases of schistosomiasis, clinical examination and ultrasound in positive cases of S. mansoni. The autochthony of the cases was investigated and the case were clinically evaluated. The cases and breeding sites were georeferenced and spatially described. RESULTS : The results identified 30 breeding with B. straminea, four of which were potential foci of transmission, as molecular testing identified snails with S. mansoni DNA. There were 14 children diagnosed with schistosomiasis, of which five were considered to be autochthonous cases of the disease. CONCLUSIONS : Urgent measures are required in order to avoid schistosomiasis becoming endemic to Recife, as has happened in other coastal areas of the state of Pernambuco.
