Abstract Aim: Polymorphisms in the COMT gene can alter enzymatic functions, raising levels of endogenous catecholamines, which stimulates beta-adrenergic receptors related to pain. This study aimed to evaluate whether a polymorphism in the COMT gene (rs4818) is associated with dental pain in children. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 731 pairs of children and parents randomly selected from a population-based sample of eight-year-old children. Reports of dental pain was evaluated using a question directed at the parents and self-reported pain using the Faces Pain Scale – Revised. Dental caries experience was determined using the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index. For genetic analysis, DNA was obtained from oral mucosa epithelial cells of 352 children randomly selected from the initial sample. Results: Children with the CC genotype had higher odds of reporting moderate to intense pain than those with the GG genotype (OR=3.60; 95% CI=0.80–16.20; p=0.03). These same children had greater odds of parental reports of pain (OR=1.93; 95% CI=0.91-4.08; p=0.02). Moreover, lower schooling of parents/guardians and caries experience in the primary dentition were significantly associated with greater odds of a parental report of dental pain (OR=2.06; 95% CI=1.47–2.91; p<0.001; OR=6.26; 95% CI=4.46–8.78; p<0.001). Conclusions: The rs4818 polymorphism of the COMT gene is associated with dental pain. Children with the C allele are more likely to report higher levels of pain. Clinical Relevance: Even though the experience of pain is subjective and multifactorial, this study raises the hypothesis that there is a genetic predisposition to dental pain that should be considered in clinical practice.

Abstract Background Surgical site infection is an important complication after pediatric cardiac surgery, associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Objectives We sought to identify risk factors for surgical site infection after pediatric cardiac surgeries. Methods A case-control study included patients aged between 1 year and 19 years and 11 months of age, submitted to cardiac surgery performed at a tertiary cardiac center from January 1 st , 2011, through December 31, 2018. Charts were reviewed for pre-, intra, and postoperative variables. We identified two randomly selected control patients with the same pathophysiological diagnosis and underwent surgery within thirty days of each index case. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors. Statistical significance was defined as p<0.05. Results Sixty-six cases and 123 controls were included. Surgical site infection incidence ranged from 2% to 3.8%. The following risk factors were identified: Infant age (OR 3.19, 95% CI 1.26 to 8.66, p=0.014), presence of genetic syndrome (OR 6.20, CI 95% 1.70 to 21.65, p=0.004), categories 3 and 4 of RACHS-1 (OR 8.40, CI 95% 3.30 to 21.34, p<0.001), 48 h C-reactive protein level range was detected as a protective factor for this infection (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.73 to 0.98, p=0.023). Conclusions The risk factors defined in this study could not be modified. Therefore, additional surveillance and new preventive strategies need to be implemented to reduce the incidence of surgical site infection. The increased CRP in the postoperative period was a protective factor that needs further understanding.

Resumo Fundamento A infecção do sítio cirúrgico (ISC) é uma importante complicação no pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca pediátrica associada ao aumento da morbimortalidade. Objetivos Identificar fatores de risco para a ISC após cirurgias cardíacas para correção de malformações congênitas. Métodos Este estudo caso-controle incluiu 189 pacientes com um ano completo e 19 anos e 11 meses, submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca em hospital universitário terciário de cardiologia de janeiro de 2011 a dezembro de 2018. Foi realizado registro e análise de dados pré, intra e pós-operatórios. Para cada caso foram selecionados dois controles, conforme o diagnóstico da cardiopatia e cirurgia realizada em um intervalo de até 30 dias para minimizar diferenças pré e/ou intraoperatórias. Para a análise dos fatores de risco foi utilizado o modelo de regressão binária logística. Significância estatística definida como valor de p<0,05. Resultados O estudo incluiu 66 casos e 123 controles. A incidência de ISC variou de 2% a 3,8%. Fatores de risco identificados: faixa etária de lactentes (OR 3,19, IC 95% 1,26 – 8,66, p=0,014), síndrome genética (OR 6,20, IC 95% 1,70 – 21,65, p=0,004), RACHS-1 categorias 3 e 4 (OR 8,40, IC 95% 3,30 – 21,34, p<0,001), o valor da proteína C reativa (PCR) de 48 horas pós-operatórias foi demonstrado como fator protetor para esta infecção (OR 0,85, IC 95% 0,73 – 0,98, p=0,023). Conclusão Os fatores de risco identificados não são variáveis modificáveis. Vigilância e medidas preventivas contínuas são fundamentais para reduzir a infecção. O papel do PCR elevado no pós-operatório foi fator protetor e precisa ser melhor estudado.

Part of the etiology, for some researchers, may be related to work activities, so knowledge of risk factors may be important for the performance of Occupational Health and Security teams. Thus, taking into account that the evidence on the subject is scarce, the aim of this review was to summarize the available and most current information. Methodology This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content In 2008, around 280,000 new cases were estimated worldwide. Due to the low survival rate, the incidence number is similar to the mortality rate in the medium term. The five-year survival rate in some countries is 7 and 8% for males and females, respectively. This pathology generally does not show encouraging results in relation to chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Although without full consensus, it is believed that males are more likely to be affected. Discussion and Conclusions Part of pancreatic cancers may have an occupational origin through contact with ionizing radiation and, above all, some chemical agents: pesticides, fertilizers, cadmium, nickel (and other heavy metals), nitrosamines, chlorinated and polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbons, silica/asbestos, metallurgy fluids, paints and diesel fumes. Thus, the most relevant professional sectors will be agriculture and gardening, dry cleaning, construction/shipbuilding (and related areas), as well as photography. Taking into account the scarcity of data at a national level, it would be relevant to obtain studies that explore this phenomenon, namely, which levels of exposure to risk factors potentially carcinogenic, which professions are most exposed, which protection measures have been equated, as well as its effectiveness or even the rate of return to work and its eventual limitations.

Parte da sua etiologia poderá associar-se à atividade laboral, pelo que o conhecimento dos fatores de risco em ambiente de trabalho será importante para o desempenho das equipas de Saúde e Segurança ocupacionais. Assim, tendo em conta que a evidência sobre o assunto é escassa, pretendeu-se com esta revisão sintetizar a informação disponível e mais atual sobre o tema. Conteúdo Em 2008 estimaram-se cerca de 280.000 novos casos, mundialmente. Devido à baixa taxa de sobrevivência, o número de incidência é, a médio prazo, parecido ao da mortalidade. A taxa de sobrevivência a cinco anos em alguns países é de 7 e 8% para os sexos masculino e feminino, respetivamente. Esta patologia geralmente não apresenta resultados encorajadores em relação à quimioterapia ou radioterapia. Ainda que sem consenso total, acredita-se que o sexo masculino seja atingido com maior probabilidade. Discussão e Conclusões Parte dos cancros pancreáticos poderá ter origem ocupacional através do contato com radiação ionizante e sobretudo alguns agentes químicos: pesticidas, fertilizantes, cádmio, níquel (e outros metais pesados), nitrosaminas, hidrocarbonetos clorinados e aromáticos policíclicos, sílica/asbestos, fluidos da metalurgia, tintas e fumos diesel. Assim, os setores profissionais mais relevantes serão a agricultura e jardinagem, limpeza a seco, construção civil/naval (e áreas afins), bem como fotografia. Tendo em conta a escassez de dados a nível nacional, seria relevante obter estudos que explorassem este fenómeno, nomeadamente, quais os níveis de exposição a fatores de risco, potencialmente cancerígenos, quais as profissões mais atingidas, que medidas de proteção foram equacionadas, bem como a sua efetividade ou, até mesmo, a taxa de retorno laboral e suas eventuais limitações.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives Lung Cancer is fairly common and usually very lethal. Part of the cases seems to have an occupational etiology, so it will be relevant for professionals in the area to have some notions on the subject. The aim of this review was to summarize what was most recent and pertinent was published on this subject. Methodology This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022, in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content It is the deadliest cancer worldwide; it is the most frequent in males and the third most prevalent in females. Some researchers consider that it is possible that some hormonal issues can boost the number of cases in females. In this last ones, the most frequent is adenocarcinoma, less associated with tobacco. It is believed that the occupational origin can explain almost a third of the cases. In this context, asbestos are the most relevant factor (responsible for 55 to 85% of cases with occupational etiology), according to some authors. Discussion and Conclusions In the literature, there is reasonable evidence that Lung Cancer is more likely to occur in situations where there is exposure to Radon, Asbestos/Silica, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Fiberglass, Diesel, Aluminum, Sulfur Dioxide and/or Particulate Matter. Thus, some of the professional sectors highlighted in this context will be Construction (General and Naval), Foundries and Mines. Evidence points to some professional sectors such as Construction (Civil and Naval), Foundries and Mining are at greater risk. Despite this, there is little available literature that demonstrates the study of this phenomenon in national companies, so it would be relevant for some Occupational Health and Safety teams to dedicate some time to investigating these issues, enhancing global scientific knowledge on this topic and, in particular, epidemiologically characterizing the national panorama (incidence, most affected sectors/professions/tasks, as well as most used and/or effective collective and individual protection measures).

A relação entre a sua etiologia e a exposição a alguns riscos laborais pode ser relevante, pelo que será importante que os profissionais da área tenham algumas noções sobre o tema. Nesse sentido, é objetivo deste artigo reunir a melhor e mais recente evidência sobre o assunto. Conteúdo É o cancro mais mortal mundialmente; é o mais frequente no sexo masculino e o terceiro mais prevalente no feminino. Alguns investigadores consideram que é possível que algumas questões hormonais consigam potenciar o número de casos no sexo feminino. Neste género o mais frequente é o adenocarcinoma, menos associado ao tabaco. Acredita-se que a origem ocupacional pode justificar quase um terço dos casos. Neste contexto, os asbestos/amianto são o fator mais relevante (responsáveis por 55 a 85% dos casos com etiologia ocupacional), segundo alguns autores. Discussão e Conclusões Na bibliografia sobre o tema encontra-se evidência razoável de que o Cancro do Pulmão seja mais provável de ocorrer em situações em que haja exposição a Radão, Asbestos/Amianto/Sílica, Hidrocarbonetos Aromáticos Policíclicos, Fibra de Vidro, Diesel, Alumínio, Dióxido de Enxofre e/ou Matéria Particulada. A evidencia destaca alguns setores profissionais, como o da Construção (Civil e Naval), Fundições e Minas. Apesar disso, é escassa a bibliografia disponível, que demonstre o estudo deste fenómeno nas empresas nacionais, pelo que seria relevante que algumas equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais dedicassem algum tempo a investigar estas questões, potenciando o conhecimento científico global sobre este tema e, em particular, caraterizando epidemiologicamente o panorama nacional (incidência, setores/profissões/tarefas mais afetados, bem como medidas de proteção coletiva e individuais mais usadas e/ou eficazes).

Contents: Although there are many definitions for this concept, the different proposals do not conflict with each other and represent a similar general idea. In the bibliography there is abundant information on what are the factors that enhance and mitigate Job Satisfaction, as well as the main advantages with the existence of Labor Satisfaction. Discussion and Conclusions: There are several parameters that, if well worked out, will be able to enhance the Job Satisfaction of employees, as well as provide advantages, certainly sufficiently encouraging for institutions to be motivated to invest in it. Most authors argue that the management of expectations, remuneration/rewards, type of leadership, employment relationship/security, justice, respect, autonomy, self-esteem, commitment, sense of belonging, working hours, technical support and access to workshops are the most relevant in this context; as training, participation in decision-making, the possibility of career progression and the existence of good social relations between colleagues and managers.

Discussão e Conclusões: Existem diversos parâmetros que, se bem trabalhados, conseguirão potenciar a Satisfação Laboral dos funcionários, bem como proporcionar vantagens suficientemente incentivadoras, para que as instituições se motivem em nela apostar. A generalidade dos autores defende como mais relevantes neste contexto itens como a gestão das expetativas, remuneração/recompensas, tipo de liderança, vínculo laboral/segurança, justiça, respeito, autonomia, autoestima, compromisso, sensação de pertença, horários de trabalho, apoio técnico, acesso a formação, participação na tomada de decisão, possibilidade de progressão na carreira e existência de boas relações sociais entre colegas e com as chefias.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: Bladder cancer is reasonably prevalent, and in some cases it may be related to work characteristics. It would be relevant for most professionals to have some knowledge of what is published on this topic. Methodology: This is a bibliographic review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: Bladder Cancer is the most frequent or the second most among genito-urinary neoplasms and the second most deadly in that context. Considering all oncological pathologies, it is estimated that it is the 7th or 9th most prevalent. By sex, it is two to four times more frequent in males. It arises from the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, namely occupational. Some researchers argue that, in developed countries, occupational exposure is the main cause, followed by smoking; however, most studies claim the opposite. The most relevant chemical agents are aromatic amines, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides; as well as combustion products/diesel emissions and heavy metals. Discussion and Conclusions: There are some risk factors with suspected or proven association with the etiology of Bladder Cancer. It is important to disclose these, so that occupational health and safety teams can take collective and individual protection measures to mitigate this. It would also be interesting for these companies to carry out more research on the subject, adding evidence to what has already been published or providing an overview of the state of the art in Portugal.

Conteúdo: O Cancro da Bexiga é o mais frequente ou o segundo mais prevalente entre as neoplasias genito-urinárias e o segundo mais mortal nesse contexto. Considerando todas as patologias oncológicas, está estimado que é o 7º ou 9º mais prevalente. Em função da divisão por sexos, é duas a quatro vezes mais frequente no sexo masculino. Ele surge da interação entre fatores genéticos e ambientais, nomeadamente ocupacionais. Alguns investigadores defendem que, nos países desenvolvidos, a exposição ocupacional é a principal causa, seguida do tabagismo; contudo, a maioria dos estudos afirma o oposto. Os agentes químicos mais relevantes são as aminas aromáticas, hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos e os pesticidas; bem como produtos de combustão/emissões diesel e metais pesados. Discussão e Conclusões: Existem alguns fatores de risco com associação suspeita ou comprovada em relação à etiologia do Cancro da Bexiga. É importante a divulgação dos mesmos para que as equipas de saúde e segurança ocupacionais possam tomar medidas de proteção coletiva e individual para atenuar esse perigo. Seria também interessante que se realizasse mais investigação sobre o tema, acrescentando evidência ao que já está publicado e/ou dando a perspetiva do estado da arte em Portugal.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: Evidence that Laryngeal Cancer may originate at work or be influenced by behaviors carried out in the workplace has been increasing, although this relationship is still undervalued by health professionals. In this sense, the aim of this study is to identify occupational risk factors for laryngeal cancer, so that occupational health professionals can have information available to facilitate workers' health promotion and disease prevention tasks or, at the limit, suspect the problem earlier. Methodology: This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022, in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: Laryngeal Cancer is the most prevalent at the aerodigestive level; that is, about 130.000 new cases per year worldwide in males and 21.000 in females, although with some differences between countries. Although the main risk factors are alcohol and tobacco consumption, which contribute synergistically to the problem, there are activities, mainly in the primary and secondary sectors, which, due to their exposure to physical and chemical agents (such as silica, asbestos, asbestos, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heavy metals and other components of paints and cement, for example). Discussion and Conclusions: There are some risk factors with suspected or proven association with the etiology of Laryngeal Cancer. It is essential that professionals in the sector acquire a minimum of knowledge regarding what the bibliography describes, to be able to take collective and individual protection measures that can mitigate the risk. RESUMO Introdução/enquadramento/objetivos: A evidência de que o Cancro da Laringe pode ter origem no trabalho ou ser influenciado pelos comportamentos realizados em meio laboral tem vindo a aumentar, embora essa relação seja ainda pouco valorizada. Nesse sentido, pretende-se com este estudo identificar fatores de risco laborais para cancro da laringe, para que os profissionais de saúde ocupacional possam ter disponível, informações que facilitem as tarefas de promoção da saúde e prevenção da doença dos seus trabalhadores. É fundamental que os profissionais do setor adquiram conhecimentos mínimos relativos ao que a bibliografia descreve, para ser possível implementar medidas de proteção coletiva e individual que consigam atenuar o risco. Seria também desejável que as equipas de saúde ocupacional, com trabalhadores expostos a estas condições de trabalho, conseguissem investigar o tema, lançando para a bibliografia dados inovadores e/ou mais completos dos que o que estão presentemente publicados, incluindo dar uma perspetiva do estado da arte no nosso país.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: Hematopoietic oncological pathologies may be associated with some work conditions. The bibliography on the subject is not very exhaustive and, therefore, the associated knowledge is not very developed among professionals in the area and/or workers/managers/employers. The aim of this review is to summarize the most recent and relevant publications on the subject. Methodology: This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: In the work environment, the most relevant chemical agents in relation to leukemia are benzene, tetrachlorethylene, styrene, chlorophenols, aromatic amines, creosote, chromium, arsenic, ethylene oxide, asbestos, antineoplastic agents and pesticides. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has identified more than one hundred important chemical carcinogens and, of these, about a quarter increase the risk of leukemia and lymphoma. This entity classifies butadiene and formaldehyde (used in the plastic, rubber and textile production industry, for example) as included in group 1, that is, carcinogenic to humans; it further published that benzene, ethylene oxide, some pesticides and formaldehyde as probably linked to leukemia (group 2a); as well as some types of radiation. This institution highlighted the existence of a greater hematopoietic risk related to professional activities associated with shipbuilding, footwear and rubber production, although the conclusions are not consensual among researchers. In turn, chimney sweeping work has been shown to be associated with all types of hematopoietic cancer. Discussion and Conclusions: There are some risk factors with suspected or proven association with the etiology of some hematopoietic oncological pathologies. It is essential that professionals in the sector acquire a minimum of knowledge regarding what the scarce bibliography describes, so that it is possible to plan collective and individual protection measures that manage to mitigate the risk. It would also be interesting if some occupational health and safety teams, working in institutions with workers exposed to these working conditions, were able to investigate the topic, releasing innovative and/or more complete data to the bibliography than what is currently published.

RESUMO Introdução/enquadramento/objetivos: As patologias oncológicas hematopoiéticas podem estar associadas a algumas condições de trabalho. A bibliografia sobre o tema não é muito exaustiva ou robusta e, por isso, os conhecimentos associados não estão muito desenvolvidos entre os profissionais da área e e/ou trabalhadores/chefias/empregadores. Pretende-se com esta revisão resumir o que de mais recente e pertinente se publicou sobre o tema. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma Revisão Bibliográfica, iniciada através de uma pesquisa realizada em janeiro de 2022 nas bases de dados “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina e RCAAP”. Conteúdo: Em ambiente laboral os agentes químicos mais relevantes (em relação à leucemia) são o benzeno, tetracloroetileno, estireno, clorofenois, aminas aromáticas, creosoto, crómio, arsénio, óxido de etileno, asbestos, agentes antineoplásicos e pesticidas. A International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) identificou mais de cem agentes químicos carcinogénicos e, destes, cerca de um quarto aumenta o risco de leucemia e linfoma. Esta entidade classifica o butadieno e o formaldeído (usados na indústria da produção de plástico, borracha e têxtil, por exemplo), como inseridos no grupo 1, ou seja, cancerígenos para humanos; ela publicou ainda que o benzeno, óxido de etileno, alguns pesticidas e o formaldeído como provavelmente ligados à leucemia (grupo 2a); bem como alguns tipos de radiação. Esta instituição salientou a existência de um maior risco hematopoiético relacionado com as atividades profissionais associadas à construção naval, produção de calçado e borracha, ainda que as conclusões não sejam consensuais entre investigadores. Por sua vez, o trabalho de limpeza de chaminés demonstrou estar associado a todos os tipos de cancro hematopoiético. Discussão e Conclusões: Existem alguns fatores de risco com associação suspeita ou comprovada em relação à etiologia de algumas patologias oncológicas hematopoiéticas. É fundamental que os profissionais do setor adquiram conhecimentos mínimos relativos ao que a escassa bibliografia descreve, de forma a ser possível planear medidas de proteção coletiva e individual que consigam atenuar o risco. Seria também interessante que algumas equipas de saúde e segurança ocupacionais, a exercer em instituições com trabalhadores expostos a estas condições de trabalho, conseguissem investigar o tema, lançando para a bibliografia dados inovadores e/ou mais completos dos que o que estão presentemente publicados.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: There are work circumstances that can increase the oncological risk and Breast Cancer is no exception to this situation. However, knowledge on this subject is not particularly abundant among workers and/or Occupational Health and Safety teams professionals. This review was intended to mitigate this issue. Methodology: This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases: “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: Night shifts are chronodisruptive, probably due to decreased melatonin production. Other researchers add that night work and/or nocturnal exposure to light disturbs the circadian rhythm and hormone secretion (with emphasis also on prolactin, glucocorticoids, adrenocorticotropic hormone, corticoliberin and serotonin). However, there is no consensus that night shifts imply lower levels of prolactin secretion and that this is associated with Breast Cancer. Some studies may be biased due to having studied night shifts versus exposure to light during these shifts (the latter being the situation that presents evidence of moderately increasing the risk of this Cancer). In addition, more recent investigations consider more possibly biasing variables. It is believed that nocturnal exposure to light implies changes in the production of melatonin and vitamin D. However, others consider that these data are not supported by robust scientific evidence or free of controversy, even due to the difference between the different types of night shifts. In 2007, the IARC published some data on this possible relationship- namely that night shifts were probably carcinogenic to humans (group 2A), and/or that there was evidence of an association between oncological processes and night shifts, probably for Breast Cancer in particular, based on sufficient evidence in animals and limited evidence in humans. Discussion and Conclusions: Most of the bibliography on the subject emphasizes night shifts and/or exposure to light during them as a work etiology, although without full consensus between causality and/or pathophysiology. Pesticides, solvents and products included in kitchen fumes (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes and polycyclic aromatic amines) are also mentioned. It would be an asset for some Occupational Health and Safety professionals, with adequate logistical capacity, to investigate the area, subsequently disclosing the conclusions covered.

RESUMO Introdução/enquadramento/objetivos: Existem circunstâncias laborais que podem potenciar o risco oncológico e não se encontra em situação excecional o Cancro de Mama. Contudo, o conhecimento disponível sobre o assunto é escasso, pelo que há o risco de essa informação não circular pelos trabalhadores e/ou profissionais a exercer em equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais. Nesse sentido, pretendeu-se com esta revisão reunir e disponibilizar conhecimento para facilitar a prevenção da doença e promoção da saúde em meio ocupacional. Metodologia: Realizou-se uma Revisão Bibliográfica, em janeiro de 2022, nas seguintes bases de dados; “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina e RCAAP”. Conteúdo: Os turnos noturnos são cronodisruptores provavelmente devido à redução na produção de melatonina. Outros investigadores acrescentam que o trabalho noturno e/ou a exposição noturna à luz perturba o ritmo circadiano e a secreção hormonal (com destaque também para a prolactina, glicocorticoides, hormona adrenocorticotrópica, corticoliberina e serotonina). Não é, contudo, consensual que os turnos noturnos impliquem níveis menores de secreção de prolactina e que tal se associe ao Cancro de Mama. Poderão alguns estudos estar enviesados por terem estudado os turnos noturnos versus a exposição à luz nesses turnos (sendo a última situação a que apresenta evidência de aumentar moderadamente o risco de cancro mamário), uma vez que se acredita que esta implique alteração na produção de melatonina e vitamina D. Contudo, outros consideram que esses dados não são suportados por evidência científica robusta ou isentos de controvérsias, até pela diferença entre os diversos tipos de turnos noturnos. A International Agency for Reserch on Cancer publicou em 2007 alguns dados sobre esta eventual relação- nomeadamente que turnos noturnos eram provavelmente carcinogénicos para humanos (grupo 2A) e/ou que havia evidência na associação entre processos oncológicos e os turnos noturnos, provavelmente para este cancro em específico, baseada em evidência suficiente em animais e limitada em humanos. Discussão e Conclusões: A maioria da bibliografia sobre o tema realça como etiologia laboral os turnos noturnos e/ou a exposição a luz durante os mesmos, ainda que não exista consenso total entre nexo de causalidade e/ou fisiopatologia. Também são mencionados de forma mais sumária os pesticidas, solventes e os produtos inseridos nos fumos das cozinhas (hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos, aldeídos e aminas aromáticas policíclicas). Tendo em conta a relevância do assunto e a escassez de informação disponível, seria importante que as equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais, com capacidade logística adequada, sinalizassem os casos positivos e investigassem potenciais associações, divulgando posteriormente as conclusões abarcadas.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: Testicular Cancer usually appears at earlier ages than other oncological pathologies, therefore, it is more likely to be diagnosed in the active population. It is suspected that part of the cases may have an occupational etiology, so it will be relevant to develop efforts for its early diagnosis and prevention. In this sense, this review intends to highlight the most relevant publications on the subject, to facilitate the work of occupational health teams. Methodology: The research and bibliographic review were carried out in January 2022, in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: It is most frequent in developed countries; corresponds to 1% of all cancers diagnosed in men, considering all age groups. Incidences have been increasing to nearly double over the last four decades in most countries, possibly due to some occupational and/or environmental exposures. Discussion and Conclusions: Occupational issues that seem to be more related to this cancer are contact with some chemical agents (namely pesticides, asbestos, solvents and heavy metals); as well as ionizing radiation. Thus, some of the most relevant sectors will be agriculture, civil construction, demolitions, industry with the production of chemical agentes, paper and plastics, laundries and firefighters. It would be relevant for some Occupational Health and Safety teams to dedicate some time to investigating these issues, enhancing global scientific knowledge on this topic and, in particular, deepening the national level (global incidence, more relevant sectors/professions/tasks, as well as collective and individual protection measures most used and effective).

RESUMO Introdução/enquadramento/objetivos: O Cancro do Testículo surge, geralmente, em idades mais precoces que as outras patologias oncológicas, logo, tem maior probabilidade de ser diagnosticado na população ativa. Suspeita-se que parte dos casos possa ter uma etiologia ocupacional, pelo que será relevante desenvolver esforços para o seu diagnóstico precoce e sobretudo prevenção. Nesse sentido, com esta revisão pretende-se evidenciar o que de mais pertinente se publicou sobre o assunto, para facilitar a atuação das equipas de saúde e segurança ocupacionais. Metodologia: A pesquisa e Revisão Bibliográfica, foram realizadas em janeiro de 2022, nas bases de dados “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina e RCAAP”. Conteúdo: O Cancro Testicular é o mais frequente nos países desenvolvidos; corresponde a 1% de toda a patologia oncológica diagnosticada nesse género, considerando todas as faixas etárias. As incidências têm vindo a aumentar para cerca do dobro nas últimas quatro décadas na generalidade dos países, eventualmente devido a algumas exposições ocupacionais e/ou ambientais. Discussão e Conclusões: As questões ocupacionais que aparentam estar mais relacionadas são o contato com alguns agentes químicos (nomeadamente pesticidas, asbestos, solventes e metais pesados); bem como radiação ionizante. Assim, alguns dos setores mais relevantes serão a agricultura, construção civil, demolições, indústria com produção de alguns agentes químicos, papel e plásticos, lavandarias e bombeiros. Seria relevante que algumas equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais dedicassem algum tempo a investigar estas questões, potenciando o conhecimento científico global sobre este tema e, em particular, aprofundando o patamar nacional de dados (incidência global, setores/profissões/tarefas mais relevantes, bem como medidas de proteção coletiva e individuais mais usadas e eficazes).

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: The study of cancer and work-related etiology has been increasing, revealing some associations with previously undervalued occupational risk factors. In this sense, it is legitimate to find out whether Thyroid Cancer can be associated with certain occupational characteristics, so that occupational health and safety teams can effectively carry out its work. Thus, the aim of this review is to gather as much scientific evidence on the phenomenon as possible, to promote a healthier and safer work environment. Methodology: This is a bibliographic review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022, in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: In recent decades, this pathology has increased to about three times more, becoming one of the most frequent in some countries, which may be associated with the existence of greater medical surveillance and more regular auxiliary diagnostic exams, not least because most of the lesions detected are increasingly small and premature: although other researchers consider that the increase in incidence is real, due to ionizing radiation and worsening of the Body Mass Index. Discussion and Conclusions: The work circumstances that seem to be more associated are ionizing radiation, as well as some dust and chemical agents present in demolition areas/collapsed buildings and/or mercury, although without full consensus among researchers. It will be necessary to carry out further studies to prove the etiology of work origin, which will only be possible if the Occupational Health and Safety teams are aware of the problem and carry out epidemiological studies to investigate this potential causality.

RESUMO Introdução/enquadramento/objetivos: O estudo entre algumas doenças oncológicas e a eventual etiologia laboral tem vindo a aumentar. Nesse sentido é lícito averiguar se o Cancro da Tiroide pode estar associado a determinadas caraterísticas ocupacionais, de forma a que as equipas de saúde e segurança laborais possam realizar com eficácia o seu trabalho. Assim, é objetivo desta revisão reunir o máximo de evidência científica sobre o fenómeno, para potenciar um ambiente laboral mais saudável e seguro. Metodologia: Realizou-se uma Revisão Bibliográfica, tendo a pesquisa sido realizada em janeiro de 2022, nas bases de dados “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina e RCAAP”. Conteúdo: Nas últimas décadas esta patologia aumentou para o triplo, passando a ser um dos cancros mais frequentes em alguns países, o que poderá associar-se à existência de uma maior vigilância médica e exames auxiliares de diagnóstico mais regulares, até porque a generalidade das lesões detetadas são cada vez mais pequenas e precoces; contudo, também se acredita que o aumento da incidência pode ser real devido, principalmente, à radiação ionizante e agravamento do índice de Massa Corporal. Discussão e Conclusões: As circunstâncias laborais que parecem estar mais associadas são a radiação ionizante, bem como algumas poeiras e agentes químicos presentes em zonas de demolições/queda de edifícios e/ou mercúrio, ainda que sem consenso total entre investigadores. Será necessário realizar mais estudos para comprovar a etiologia de origem laboral, o que só será possível se as equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais estiverem atentas ao problema e realizem estudos epidemiológicos para averiguar essa potencial causalidade.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: Some studies alert to the possibility that the incidence of Liver Cancer is increased in workers of some professional sectors. This information is, however, still very scarce, and may not be available for occupational health teams, to be able to take measures in higher risk workplaces or study the incidence of this phenomenon. Thus, the objective of this work was to summarize the most relevant data about occupational risk factors for liver cancer. Methodology: This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: Liver Cancer is the fifth or sixth most common worldwide and the second most deadly, with around 750,000 cases/year. 80% of cases occur in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and only 8% occur in developed countries. At an occupational level, there may be a relationship with exposure to Aflotoxins, Pesticides, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Vinyl Chloride and some viruses. Discussion and Conclusions: There is some evidence that liver cancer may be associated with contact with some chemical and biological agents, however it is still not possible to irrefutably establish their relationship with work environments. The statistics shown in this study do not reveal data from Portugal, so it would be interesting to get to know the national reality better and to find out the existence of relationships between cases of liver oncological disease and their workplaces.

Essa informação é, no entanto, sumária, podendo não estar disponível para as equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacional, de forma a tomarem medidas nos locais de trabalho de maior risco e/ou estudarem a incidência desse fenómeno. Assim, objetivou-se com este trabalho resumir os dados mais relevantes sobre este tema, de modo a potenciar o desenvolvimento de ambientes laborais mais saudáveis e seguros. Metodologia: Realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica, em janeiro de 2022, nas bases de dados “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina e RCAAP”, da qual resultou um estudo de Revisão Bibliográfica. Conteúdo: O Cancro do Fígado é o quinto ou sexto mais frequente a nível mundial e o segundo mais mortal, com cerca de 750.000 casos/ano. 80% dos casos ocorrem na Ásia e África subsariana e apenas 8% em países desenvolvidos. A nível ocupacional poderá existir relação com a exposição a Aflotoxinas, Pesticidas, Hidrocarbonetos Aromáticos Policíclicos, Cloreto de Vinilo e alguns vírus. Discussão e Conclusões: Existe alguma evidência de que o Cancro do Fígado pode estar associado ao contato com alguns agentes químicos e biológicos, contudo ainda não é possível estabelecer, de forma irrefutável, a sua relação com os ambientes laborais. As estatísticas evidenciadas neste estudo não revelam dados de Portugal, pelo que seria interessante conhecer melhor a realidade nacional e averiguar a existência de relações eventuais entre os casos de doença oncológica hepática e os seus locais de trabalho.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: There are several cancers that can be associated with some characteristics of the Work. Regarding the oncological pathology of the Kidney, there are not many publications. The aim of this review was to summarize what has been reported on the subject to date, in order to enhance the performance of Occupational Health and Safety Teams working in possibly targeted sectors. Methodology: This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: Kidney Cancer, at the level of non-occupational etiology, may be associated with tobacco, obesity and high blood pressure (metabolic syndrome), as well as Cystic Kidney Disease, male gender, older age, black ethnicity and family history. It is believed that tobacco can explain 20 to 30% of it in men and 10 to 20% in women; being the dose-dependent relationship. The association with arterial hypertension also seems to be dose-dependent and more intense above 160 and 100 mmHg for systolic and diastolic, respectively. There are several working conditions capable of enhancing it; even so, studies sometimes do not consider the possible influence of biasing variables, such as smoking, including passive. Discussion and Conclusions: Although without absolute consensus, this cancer seems to be enhanced by exposure to Radon/Uranium, Asbestos, Pesticides, derivatives of Fuels and various Chemical Agents (such as tri and tetrachlorethylene, dinitrotoluene and lead). Thus, the most targeted professional sectors could be mining; civil and naval construction, demolition sector; agriculture; production, packaging and distribution of relevant chemical agents; refineries and filling stations; as well as dry cleaning, printing, car and aircraft mechanics, maintenance, metallurgy, drivers and road pavers. It would be pertinent for some Occupational Health and Safety teams to initiate research projects in this context, for subsequent dissemination of conclusions, in order to advance knowledge and provide a healthier and safer work environment.

RESUMO Introdução/enquadramento/objetivos: Existem vários cancros que podem ter associação com algumas caraterísticas do Trabalho. Em relação à patologia oncológica do Rim, não se encontram muitas publicações. Foi objetivo desta revisão fazer uma síntese do que foi até hoje relatado sobre o assunto, de modo a potenciar o desempenho das Equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais a atuar em setores possivelmente visados. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma Revisão Bibliográfica, iniciada através de uma pesquisa realizada em janeiro de 2022 nas bases de dados “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina e RCAAP”. Conteúdo: O Cancro Renal, a nível de etiologia não ocupacional, poderá estar associado a tabaco, obesidade e hipertensão arterial (ou seja, síndroma metabólico), bem como Doença Renal Quística, sexo masculino, idade mais avançada, etnia negra e antecedentes familiares. Acredita-se que o tabaco possa justificar 20 a 30% desta patologia em homens e 10 a 20% nas mulheres; sendo a relação dose-dependente. Também a associação com a hipertensão arterial parece ser dose-dependente e mais intensa acima de 160 e 100 mmHg para a sistólica e diastólica, respetivamente. Existem várias condições laborais com capacidade de potenciar o Cancro Renal; ainda assim, por vezes, os estudos não consideram a eventual influência de variáveis enviesadoras, como o tabagismo, incluindo passivo. Discussão e Conclusões: Ainda que sem consenso absoluto, esta patologia parece ficar potenciada com a exposição ao Radão/Urânio, Asbestos, Pesticidas, derivados dos Combustíveis e Agentes Químicos diversos (como o tri e o tetracloroetileno, dinitrotolueno e o chumbo). Assim, os setores profissionais mais visados poderão ser a mineração; construção civil e naval, setor das demolições; agricultura; produção, embalamento e distribuição de agentes químicos relevantes; refinarias e postos de abastecimento; bem como a limpeza a seco, indústria gráfica, mecânica de carros e aviões, manutenção, metalurgia, motoristas e pavimentadores de estrada. Seria pertinente que algumas equipas de Saúde e Segurança Ocupacionais iniciassem projetos de investigação neste contexto, para posterior divulgação das conclusões, de modo a fazer progredir o conhecimento e proporcionar um ambiente laboral mais saudável e seguro.

ABSTRACT Introduction/framework/objectives: Sometimes some oncological pathologies may be associated with certain working conditions; in relation to Ovarian Cancer, publications are scarce. The aim of this review was to summarize what was most relevant in relation to this topic. Methodology: This is a Bibliographic Review, initiated through a search carried out in January 2022 in the databases “CINALH plus with full text, Medline with full text, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Methodology Register, Nursing and Allied Health Collection: comprehensive, MedicLatina and RCAAP”. Content: Ovarian Cancer is the 6th or 8th most common in females worldwide and the fifth most frequent in Europe and USA, that is, it is responsible for about 4% of female oncological pathology. Of all gynecological cancers, it has the highest mortality. Discussion and Conclusions: Although some defend that there have been no proven associations between some work characteristics and this pathology; others highlight asbestos, talcum powder, trichlorethylene, silica and ionizing radiation, as well as shift work. However, the relationships are complex. It would be desirable for the topic to be further investigated and the data disseminated, so that scientific knowledge progresses and workplaces become a little safer.

Conteúdo: O Cancro do Ovário é o 6º ou 8º mais comum no sexo feminino mundialmente e o quinto mais frequente na Europa e nos EUA, ou seja, é responsável por cerca de 4% da patologia oncológica feminina. De todos os cancros ginecológicos é o que apresenta maior mortalidade. Discussão e Conclusões: Ainda que alguns defendam que não se provaram existir associações entre algumas caraterísticas laborais e esta patologia oncológica; outros destacam os asbestos, pó de talco, tricloroetileno, sílica e a radiação ionizante, bem como o trabalho por turnos. Contudo, as relações são complexas. Seria desejável que o tema fosse mais investigado e os dados divulgados, de forma ao conhecimento científico progredir e os locais de trabalho passarem a ser um pouco mais seguros.
