This work compares the anticorrosive properties of DC electrodeposited CuCoNi, CuCo, and CuNi alloy coatings in a NaCl 0.5 mol L-1 solution. The results showed that j and the bath composition influenced the chemical, morphological, and electrochemical characteristics of the alloy coatings. Among all the studied coatings, the CuCo, CuNi, and CuCoNi ones produced at j = 10 A m-2, j = 60 A m-2, and j = 25 A m-2, respectively, showed the best anticorrosive performances in the saline medium, exhibiting charge transfer resistances (Rtc) higher than 2000 Ω cm2 and an electrical double layer capacitances (Cdl) lower than 8 X10-4 F cm-2. These results agree with the compact morphologies and smaller grain sizes presented by these coatings. Therefore, the anticorrosive properties of the coatings cannot be related only to the less noble metal(s) contents in the alloy but also to their morphologies.

Resumo: Os cães são os principais reservatórios do ciclo de transmissão domiciliar da leishmaniose visceral, e o diagnóstico é essencial para a efetividade das medidas de controle recomendadas pelo Ministério da Saúde. Os autores avaliam o desempenho diagnóstico do protótipo da ELISA-Vetlisa/BIOCLIN em amostras sorológicas de 200 cães, em triplicata, incluindo cães sintomáticos, oligossintomáticos e saudáveis, com dois painéis distintos (A e B) caracterizados por testes parasitológicos enquanto referência. No estudo, o kit-protótipo mostrou sensibilidade de 99% (IC95%: 94,5-100,0) e especificidade de 100% (IC95%: 96,4-100,0). A sensibilidade do kit-protótipo não variou de maneira significativa de acordo com o estado clínico dos cães. Considerando a classificação final dos resultados (positivo ou negativo), a concordância entre os resultados dos testes em triplicata foi quase perfeita (kappa = 0,99; IC95%: 0,98-1,00). O protótipo ELISA-Vetlisa/BIOCLIN tem o potencial de ser utilizada para o diagnóstico sorológico da leishmaniose visceral canina no Brasil.

Abstract: Dogs are the main reservoirs in the domestic transmission cycle of visceral leishmaniasis, and the diagnosis is essential for the effectiveness of the control measures recommended by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. We assessed the diagnostic performance of the ELISA-Vetlisa/BIOCLIN prototype with serum samples from 200 dogs, in triplicate, including symptomatic, oligosymptomatic, asymptomatic, and healthy dogs, originated by two distinct panels (A and B) characterized by parasitological tests as the reference standard. In this study, the prototype kit showed a 99% sensitivity (95%CI: 94.5-100.0) and a 100% specificity (95%CI: 96.4-100.0). The sensitivity of the prototype kit did not vary significantly with the clinical status of the dogs. Considering the final result classification (positive or negative), agreement between the results of repeated tests was almost perfect (kappa = 0.99; 95%CI: 0.98-1.00). ELISA-Vetlisa/BIOCLIN is a promising option for the serological diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil.

Resumen: Los perros son los principales reservorios en el ciclo de transmisión doméstica de la leishmaniasis visceral, por ello el diagnóstico es esencial para la efectividad de las medidas de control recomendadas por el Ministerio de Salud de Brasil. Abstract The present work evaluated the efficiency of applied biological control and chemical control of Chrysodeixis includens, and the management of this looper caterpillar in the field soybean crop. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, consisting of six treatments applied only once: two different doses of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), 0.2 and 0.35 L ha-1; Metarhizium rileyi strain UFMS 02 (Mr), 2.0 and 5.0 kg ha-1; insecticide Flubendiamide (Fd) 20 mL ha-1; and the control. The reduction of the pest and the percentage of efficiency of the products along the development of the soybean, besides some phytotechnical parameters, were evaluated thirteen days after the application. In general, there was a decrease in the number of caterpillars after thirteen days of spraying, with the Bt treatment being 350 mL ha-1, which provided the greatest reduction in the population (96.2%) when compared to the control (6.7 %). Regarding efficiency, treatments containing biological products Bt (two doses) and Mr 5.0 kg ha-1 provided the best results: 95.88, 84.69 and 92.35%, respectively. Among the phytotechnical parameters evaluated, the biological treatments were superior to the chemical treatments in relation to the productivity and the number of pods per plant, not differing statistically among them.

Objetivo: avaliar a efetividade da cavernostomia nos pacientes com bola fúngica complexa.Métodos: foram analisados os prontuários de pacientes submetidos à cavernostomia entre janeiro de 2005 e maio de 2013. Foram avaliados: idade, sexo, sinais e sintomas pré-operatórios, doença predisponente, exames pré-operatórios, localização do aspergiloma, agente etiológico, indicação da cavernostomia, evolução pós-operatória.Resultados: dez pacientes eram do sexo masculino. A média de idade foi 42,9 anos (34-56). O sintoma mais frequente foi o sangramento pulmonar repetido. A cavernostomia foi proposta para os pacientes com risco elevado para ressecção pulmonar, foi realizada em 17 pacientes e todos eles apresentavam sequelas de tuberculose pulmonar com lesões cavitárias. A indicação em todos os casos foi hemoptise e eliminação de catarro. As cavernostomias foram realizadas em tempo cirúrgico único. Nos 17 pacientes a caverna foi deixada aberta após a retirada do micetoma. Em todos os pacientes a hemoptise cessou imediatamente. A mortalidade operatória foi 1 (9.5%).Conclusão: a cavernostomia é uma alternativa de tratamento efetivo em pacientes com risco elevado. Pode ser útil em alguns pacientes com aspergiloma complexo, independentemente da função pulmonar ou doença bilateral. É tecnicamente fácil, de baixo risco, poupa parênquima, e realizada em tempo operatório único.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of cavernostomy in patients with complex fungal balls.Methods: We analyzed the medical records of patients undergoing cavernostomy between January 2005 and May 2013, evaluating: age, gender, preoperative signs and symptoms, predisposing disease, preoperative tests, location of the aspergilloma, etiologic agent, cavernostomy indication, postoperative outcome.Results: Ten patients were male. The mean age was 42.9 years (34-56). The most frequent symptom was repeated pulmonary bleeding. Cavernostomy was proposed for patients at high risk for lung resection. It was performed in 17 patients and all of them had pulmonary tuberculosis sequelae, with cavitations. The indication in all cases was hemoptysis and elimination of phlegm. The cavernostomies were performed in a single surgical procedure. In all 17 patients the cavity was left open after the withdrawal of the mycetoma. In all patients hemoptysis ceased immediately. Operative mortality was 9.5% (1).Conclusion: cavernostomy is an effective treatment alternative in patients at high risk. It may be useful in some patients with complex aspergilloma, irrespective of lung function or bilateral disease. It is technically easy, has low-risk, saves parenchyma, and may be performed in a single operative time.

Traumatic lung herniation is an unusual clinical problem. We present a case of a large left post-traumatic lung hernia on the left, anterior, second intercostal space following blunt chest trauma. An important factor in the etiology of these lesions is the relative lack of muscular support of the anterior part of the chest. This report describes the diagnosis and management of a post-traumatic lung hernia.

O blastoma pulmonar é um tumor primário do pulmão, raro, de mau prognóstico e que acomete doentes mais jovens do que os portadores do carcinoma de células não pequenas do pulmão. Geralmente, são vistos sob a forma de grandes massas pulmonares, sintomáticas e com metástases para linfonodos mediastinais. Do ponto de vista anátomo-patológico, estes tumores são bifásicos, englobando na sua estrutura componentes mesenquimal e epitelial. Embora infrequente, este tipo de tumor deve fazer parte do diagnóstico diferencial das neoplasias pulmonares. Os autores apresentam um caso de blastoma pulmonar e fazem revisão da literatura.

Pulmonary blastoma is a rare primary lung tumor with poor prognosis that commonly presents at a younger age than the non-small cell lung cancer. Classicaly they are large, symptomatic tumors with lymph nodal metastasis and carry poor prognosis. Pathological examination revealed features suggesting a biphasic tumor with mesenchymal and epithelial components. Over 200 cases have been reported so far worldwide since the first description of the tumor in 1945. Authors present a case of pulmary blastoma with literature revision.
