ABSTRACT The chemical composition, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-Candida albicans activity in vitro of the essential oil of Cinchona pubescens Vahl. leaves from the Lambayeque region were analyzed. The predominant phytochemical compounds detected by HPLC analysis were phytol (36,98 %), n-Tetratetracontan (9,38 %) and heneicosane (6,69 %). The DPPH, ABTS and FRAP methods were used to determine the antioxidant activity and the agar diffusion method was used to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-Candida albicans activity in vitro. The essential oil of Cinchona pubescens leaves was reported to have an IC50 of 273.029 mg/mL and TEAC of 0.0089mg Trolox/g sample with the DPPH method; with ABTS an IC50 of 1.2801 mg/mL and a TEAC of 3.5584 mg Trolox/g sample and with FRAP an AAEAC of 1.622 mg AA/ g oil was obtained. In addition, the antimicrobial and anti-Candida albicans activity assay expressed negative results against Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. In conclusion, the HPLC analysis of the chemical composition of the essential oil did not present any compounds with antioxidant capacity and despite containing n-tetratetracontan and heneicosane, compounds with antimicrobial capacity, no inhibition of bacterial growth was observed.

RESUMEN Se analizó la composición química, la actividad antioxidante, antibacteriana y anti- Candida albicans in vitro del aceite esencial de las hojas de Cinchona pubescens Vahl. originario de la región de Lambayeque. Los compuestos fitoquímicos predominantes detectados por análisis de HPLC fueron el fitol (36,98 %), n-Tetratetracontano (9,38 %) y heneicosano (6,69 %). Se emplearon los métodos de DPPH, ABTS y FRAP para determinar la actividad antioxidante y el método por difusión en agar para evaluar la actividad antibacteriana y anti-Candida albicans in vitro. Se encontró que el aceite esencial de las hojas de Cinchona pubescens posee un IC50 de 273.029 mg/mL y TEAC de 0.0089mg Trolox/g muestra con el método DPPH; con ABTS un IC50 de 1.2801 mg/mL y un TEAC de 3.5584 mg Trolox/g muestra y con FRAP se obtuvo y un AAEAC de 1.622 mg AA/ g aceite. Además, el ensayo de actividad antimicrobiana y anti-Candida albicans expresó resultados negativos frente a Streptococcus mutans, Enterococcus faecalis y Candida albicans. En conclusión, el análisis de HPLC de la composición química del aceite esencial no presento ningún compuesto con capacidad antioxidante y a pesar de contener n-tetratetracontano y heneicosano, compuestos con capacidad antimicrobiana, no se observó ninguna inhibición del crecimiento bacteriano.

Resumen Antecedentes: Los almacenes de carbono (C) de los bosques del mundo ascienden a 861 Pg; 44 % se encuentra en el suelo. A pesar de su importancia como reservorio, los estudios sobre carbono orgánico en el suelo (COS) en los bosques de México son escasos. Pregunta: ¿El carbono orgánico en el suelo varía entre tipos de vegetación y tipos de suelo en los bosques de Durango? Sitio de estudio: Bosques templados de Durango, México. Métodos: Los datos de COS se obtuvieron de 399 sitios permanentes. Se colectaron muestras de hojarasca, horizonte de fermentación y de las capas de suelo de 0-30 y 30-60 cm. Los contenidos de C se determinaron en un analizador elemental. El cálculo de las incertidumbres se realizó siguiendo los procedimientos usados por la Comisión Nacional Forestal. Resultados: El COS promedio estimado fue 8.48, 1.08, 110.62 y 53.44 Mg ha-1 en hojarasca, horizonte de fermentación, suelo de 0-30 y de 30-60 cm, respectivamente. Los almacenes promedio de C total en el suelo oscilaron desde 26.34 hasta 578.27 Mg ha-1 (incertidumbre: 6.31 %). La mayor variabilidad de los almacenes de COS se presentó en el bosque de pino. Conclusiones: El tipo de bosque no influye en los almacenes de carbono orgánico en el suelo, pero sí el tipo de suelo. Los reservorios de COS en los bosques Durango son más altos comparados con el mismo tipo de vegetación en otras regiones del país.

Abstract Background: Carbon (C) stocks in the world's forests amount to 861 Pg; 44 % is in the soil. Despite its importance as a reservoir, studies on soil organic carbon (SOC) in forests of Mexico are scarce. Questions: Does soil organic carbon vary between vegetation types and soil types in Durango forests? Study site: Temperate forests of Durango, Mexico. Methods: SOC data were obtained from 399 permanent sites. Samples were collected from leaf litter, fermentation horizon and from the 0-30 and 30-60 cm soil layers. C contents were determined on an elemental analyzer. Uncertainties were calculated following the procedures used by the National Forestry Commission. Results: The average SOC was 8.48, 1.08, 110.62 and 53.44 Mg ha-1 in litter, fermentation horizon, 0-30 and 30-60 cm soil, respectively. The average total soil C stocks ranged from 26.34 to 578.27 Mg ha-1 (uncertainty: 6.31 %). The greatest variability of SOC stocks occurred in pine forest. Conclusions: Forest type does not influence soil organic carbon pools, but soil type does. SOC pools in Durango forests are higher compared to the same type of vegetation in other regions of the country.

RESUMEN La papilomatosis respiratoria recurrente es una enfermedad neoplásica causada por el virus del papiloma humano y caracterizada por el crecimiento de lesiones proliferativas exofíticas que afectan la mucosa de las vías respiratorias. En su epidemiología se presenta una distribución bimodal, con una forma juvenil en menores de 20 años, más agresiva, con múltiples lesiones papilomatosas y alta frecuencia de recurrencia, en comparación con la forma adulta. El compromiso pulmonar es poco frecuente y su manejo es un desafío. Se presenta el caso de un varón de 13 años con antecedente de papilomatosis laríngea desde los dos años. El paciente mostró dificultad respiratoria y múltiples nódulos estenosantes en laringe y tráquea, y varios quistes pulmonares visualizados en la tomografía de tórax. Se le realizó exéresis de las lesiones papilomatosas y traqueostomía. Recibió dosis única de bevacizumab 400 mg intravenoso y terapias respiratorias con evolución favorable, sin recurrencias en el seguimiento.

ABSTRACT Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a neoplastic disease caused by the human papillomavirus and characterized by the growth of exophytic proliferative lesions affecting the mucosa of the respiratory tract. This condition has a bimodal age distribution; the juvenile form affects those under 20 years of age, is more aggressive and presents multiple papillomatous lesions and high frequency of recurrence, compared to the adult form. Pulmonary involvement is rare and challenging to treat. We present the case of a 13-year-old male with a history of laryngeal papillomatosis since the age of two years. The patient showed respiratory distress and multiple stenosing nodules in the larynx and trachea, as well as several pulmonary cysts identified on chest CT. The patient underwent excision of the papillomatous lesions and tracheostomy. Then, the patient received a single dose of intravenous bevacizumab 400 mg and respiratory therapies with favorable evolution, without recurrences during follow-up.

Resumen Los trabajos de ingeniería utilizan los modelos digitales de elevación para realizar cálculos y modelar fenómenos, conocer su precisión permite determinar la escala de uso y la calidad de los subproductos que se obtienen. Existen modelos libres que son muy utilizados en la práctica, como es el caso de los modelos digitales del terreno (MDTs): Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), ASTER Global Digital Elevation Map (ASTER GDEM), ALOS PALSAR, el MDT generado por el Instituto Geográfico Militar del Ecuador (IGM) y los modelos geopotenciales (MGs): EGM96, EGM08 y el MG creado por el IGM. Se evaluaron los modelos utilizando los puntos de nivelación geométrica y altura elipsoidal levantados por el IGM. Se determinaron los valores atípicos, se compararon las alturas entre los MDTs para conocer su diferencia, se calculó el error cuadrático medio (RMSE) y se definió la precisión y escala a la que se pueden emplear los diferentes modelos. Se concluyó que los MDTs SRTM 30, ALOS PALSAR e IGM pueden utilizarse para trabajos que requieran una precisión inferior a los 10 metros. El MG EGM08 junto con alturas elipsoidales de alta precisión podrían generar modelos de elevación que alcancen una precisión de 1.25 metros, mientras que los MGs EGM96 e IGM pueden generar modelos que alcancen una precisión de 2.5 metros. Las alturas elipsoidales de los MDTs SRTM 30, ALOS PALSAR e IGM obtenidos con los MGs EGM 96 y EGM 08 se pueden utilizar si se requiere una precisión inferior a los 10 metros.

Abstract Engineering uses digital elevation models to perform calculations and modeling phenomena, since it allows determining the scale at which they can be used and the quality of the by-products obtained. Two groups of models were evaluated, the digital terrain models (DTMs): Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), ASTER Global Digital Elevation Map (ASTER GDEM), ALOS PALSAR and the DTM generated by the Instituto Geográfico Militar del Ecuador (IGM), and the geopotential models (GMs): EGM96, EGM08 and the GM created by the IGM. For the evaluation, the geometric leveling points and ellipsoidal height raised in one of the IGM projects were used to determine atypical values, calculate the mean square error (RMSE) and define the precision and scale at which the different ones can be used. The heights between the DTMs were compared to know their difference. It was determined that the SRTM 30, ALOS PALSAR and IGM DMTs can be used for jobs that require an accuracy of less than 10 meters. The GM EGM08 together with high precision ellipsoidal heights could generate elevation models that can reach an accuracy of 1.25 meters, while the GMs EGM96 and IGM can generate models that achieve an accuracy of 2.5 meters. The ellipsoidal heights of the SRTM 30, ALOS PALSAR and IGM DTMs obtained with the EGM 96 and EGM 08 GMs can only be used in jobs that require an accuracy of less than 10 meters.

RESUMEN El fluoruro (F-) posee propiedades de gran interés en relación con la salud humana. En concentraciones menores a 1mgF-/L, favorece la mineralización de los tejidos duros. Sin embargo, la ingesta prolongada de agua con concentraciones superiores a 1 mg F-/L produce el cuadro clínico denominado fluorosis. En la provincia de Córdoba, estudios en poblaciones actuales detectaron esta patología en diferentes localidades. Los valores más elevados de F- en agua se hallaron en las zonas sur, noroeste y noreste, en contraste con los de la zona centro-oeste, lo cual permitió delimitar zonas con alto contenido de fluoruro en los cursos hídricos. Este trabajo se propone evaluar el impacto de la fluorosis dental en restos humanos de sitios arqueológicos de la provincia y relacionarlo con el contenido de F- en las aguas de regiones cercanas a los hallazgos. Se analizaron 38 individuos (27 masculinos y 11 femeninos) de diferentes regiones de la provincia de Córdoba y se registraron indicadores de fluorosis dental como hipoplasias y alteraciones en la coloración del esmalte. Además, se relevaron las frecuencias de caries, los restos radiculares, las fracturas del esmalte, las secuelas de procesos periapicales y el estado de las tablas alveolares, para evaluar la salud bucal de los individuos. Los resultados muestran que 21 individuos (55,3%) presentan signos de fluorosis dental, 13 masculinos (34,2%) y 8 femeninos (21,0%). La procedencia de los individuos afectados sugiere una relativa correspondencia con resultados de estudios clínicos actuales y con los niveles de fluoruros en las aguas de la provincia.

ABSTRACT Fluoride (F-) has properties of great interest in relation to human health. In concentrations lower than 1mgF-/L, it favors the mineralization of hard tissues. However, chronic intake of water with concentrations greater than 1 mg F-/L produces fluorosis. In the province of Córdoba, studies in current populations detected this pathology in different localities. The highest values of F- in water were found in the southern, northwestern and northeastern zones, in contrast to those of the central-western zone, which made it possible to delimit zones with high fluoride content in watercourses. This work aims to evaluate the impact of dental fluorosis in human remains from archaeological sites in the province and relate it to the F- content in the waters of regions near the findings. Thirty-eight individuals (27 male and 11 female) from different regions of the province of Córdoba were analyzed and indicators of dental fluorosis such as hypoplasia and alterations in enamel color were recorded. In addition, the frequencies of caries, root remains, enamel fractures, sequelae of periapical processes and the state of the alveolar tables were surveyed, to assess the oral health of individuals. The results show that 21 individuals (55.3%) have signs of dental fluorosis, 13 males (34.2%) and 8 females (21.0%). The origin of the affected individuals suggests a relative correspondence with the results of current clinical studies and with the levels of fluoride in the waters of the province.

Abstract Forest activities exert a positive or negative influence on soil ecosystem properties and services, through changes in vegetation and microclimate. The removal of biomass alters the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles, which are important indicators of soil health. The objective of this study was to determine the reservoir of N and the C:N ratio at two different depths of an Umbrisol, considering three stands with forest management (Clearcutting, Parent Trees and Selection) and a post-fire regenerated area, all of them eight years after the intervention, and a control plot as reference stand in a Pinus-Quercus forest. Results indicate significant differences in the variables for both soil depths (Total N, organic C, C:N ratio, N reservoir Mg ha-1). The observed contents of total nitrogen (>0.10 %) are considered very high, being ascribable to the nature of the Umbrisol and to the quality of the organic matter of this ecosystem, with the ensuing impact on the C:N ratio, which is slightly above the optimal ranges of mineralization, having an average value of 20.4 at both depths. On the other hand, the nitrogen reserve for the analyzed profile ranged between 5.03 (control) and 9.63 Mg ha-1 (Parent Trees). Particularly, the Clearcutting and Parent Trees treatments showed differences in regard to the Control, such treatments accelerated the incorporation of organic material to the soil (roots, branches, leaves), causing increases from 79 to 91 % in the nitrogen reservoir. The present research provides essential information to establish complementary pre- and post-management forestry practices to preserve and improve the condition of the soil (clearing, pruning, burning, etc.).

Resumen Las actividades forestales influyen positiva o negativamente sobre las propiedades y servicios ecosistémicos del suelo, mediante cambios en la vegetación y microclima. La remoción de biomasa altera los ciclos del Carbono (C) y Nitrógeno (N), indicadores importantes de la salud edáfica. El objetivo fue determinar el reservorio de N y la relación C:N en dos profundidades de un Umbrisol, en tres rodales con cortas de regeneración (Matarrasa, Árboles Padre y Selección), un área regenerada posincendio con antigüedad de ocho años de ser intervenidos y un rodal de referencia (control) en un bosque de pino-encino (Pinus-Quercus). Los resultados indicaron diferencias significativas para N total, C orgánico, relación C:N, y reservorio de N Mg ha-1 para ambas profundidades del suelo. Los contenidos de N total (>0.10 %) se consideran muy altos, atribuibles a la naturaleza del Umbrisol y calidad de su materia orgánica, lo que influye en la relación C:N, la cual está ligeramente por encima de los intervalos óptimos de mineralización, con un promedio para ambas profundidades de 20.4. La reserva de N para el perfil analizado varió entre 5.03 (Referencia) a 9.63 Mg ha-1 (Árboles Padre). Particularmente, las cortas de Matarrasa y Árboles Padre tuvieron diferencias con el control, estos tratamientos aceleraron la incorporación de material orgánico al suelo (raíces, ramas, hojas) que provocaron incrementos de 79 a 91 % en el reservorio de N. La información generada es fundamental para el establecimiento de prácticas complementarias pre y posmanejo forestal (limpias, podas, quemas) que conserven y mejoren la condición del suelo.

Resumen Introducción: El midazolam es una benzodiazepina utilizada para la sedación, sin embargo, puede causar depresión respiratoria y aumentar la morbilidad en los pacientes. La melatonina es una alternativa eficaz para controlar la ansiedad en el período perioperatorio y podría ayudar a reducir el uso de benzodiazepinas durante la cirugía. El objetivo de este ensayo clínico fue determinar la eficacia de la sedación preoperatoria con una dosis única de melatonina para reducir el uso intraoperatorio de midazolam en mujeres sometidas a histerectomía abdominal total (HTA). Material y métodos: Se trata de un ensayo clínico aleatorizado doble ciego realizado en mujeres mayores de 25 años, programadas para TAH, con American Society of Anesthesiologists Grado I o II. Cada paciente fue asignado al azar para recibir 5 mg de cápsulas orales de liberación prolongada de melatonina o placebo. El uso de midazolam para el manejo anestésico fue decisión del anestesiólogo tratante y el estado de sedación se determinó mediante la escala OAA/S. Resultados: En las pacientes que recibieron melatonina, el uso de midazolam durante la cirugía fue menor que en las pacientes que recibieron placebo. Además, la melatonina produce sedación 30 min después de la administración, el efecto sedante se mantuvo a los 60 y 90 min. Además, la estancia hospitalaria fue más corta en los pacientes que recibieron melatonina (p = 0.006). Conclusión: La melatonina es eficaz para reducir el consumo de midazolam intraoperatorio y la estancia hospitalaria en mujeres sometidas a HTA.

Abstract Introduction: Midazolam is a benzodiazepine used for sedation, however, can cause respiratory depression and increases morbidity in patients. Melatonin is an effective alternative to manage anxiety in the perioperative period and could help to reduce the use of benzodiazepines during surgery. The aim of this clinical trial was to determine the efficacy of pre-operative sedation with a single-dose melatonin to reduce intraoperative use of midazolam in women under total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH). Materials and methods: This is a double-blind randomized clinical trial conducted in women over 25 years, scheduled for TAH, with American Society of Anesthesiologists Grade I or II. Each patient was randomly assigned to receive 5 mg of melatonin prolonged-release oral capsules or placebo. Midazolam use for anesthetic management was the decision of the treating anesthesiologist and sedation status was determined using the observer’s assessment of alertness/sedation scale. Results: In patients receiving melatonin, the use of midazolam during surgery was less than in patients receiving placebo. In addition, melatonin produces sedation 30 min after administration, the sedative effect was maintained at 60- and 90-min. Furthermore, hospital stay was shorter in patients who received melatonin (p = 0.006). Conclusion: Melatonin is effective for reduces intraoperative midazolam consumption and hospital stay in women undergoing TAH.

Abstract Agave angustifolia Haw. plants, which are obtained by asexual propagation (inflorescence bulbils and rhizome suckers), are established in a nursery where they are provided with agronomic management that is considered to include the supply of nutrients, to achieve quality plants in health and vigor that are successfully established in the field. The research was carried out from January 2017 to August 2018, in the nursery of the Technological Institute of the Valley of Oaxaca, located in the Exhacienda de Nazareno, Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, Mexico, the objective was to evaluate the nutritional contents in foliar tissues and the size of Agave angustifolia plants, in nursery conditions, fertigated at different concentrations of nutrients. For seven months, four groups of plants that were in soil of loamy-sandy texture were applied different types of irrigation: water or nutrient solution (SN) at 50, 75 and 100% of the Steiner formulation, after that time, their growth was evaluated. In leaf samples, the nutritional contents were analyzed, and the plants to which water was applied, SN-50%, SN-75% and SN-100%, had in mg kg-1 of foliar dry matter: 7 225, 10 641, 12 575 and 14 957 of N; 3 017, 5 018, 5 297 and 6 719 of P; 7 827 19 604, 16 220.1 and 18 847 of Mg, accumulated, 282.74, 340.11, 431.98 and 453.05 g of foliar dry matter, as well as 75.01, 77.21, 95.92 and 103.14 g of dry matter in the root, respectively.

Resumen Las plantas de Agave angustifolia Haw., que se obtienen mediante propagación asexual (bulbilos de inflorescencia e hijuelos de rizoma) se establecen en vivero en donde se les proporciona manejo agronómico que se considera debe incluir el abastecimiento de nutrimentos, para lograr plantas de calidad en sanidad y vigor que se establezcan con éxito en campo. La investigación se realizó de enero 2017 a agosto de 2018, en el vivero del Instituto Tecnológico del Valle de Oaxaca, ubicado en la Exhacienda de Nazareno, Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, México, el objetivo fue evaluar los contenidos nutrimentales en tejidos foliares y el tamaño de las plantas de Agave angustifolia, en condiciones de vivero, fertirrigadas a diferentes concentraciones de nutrimentos. Cuatro grupos de plantas que estuvieron en suelo de textura franco-arenosa, durante siete meses se les aplicó diferentes tipos de riego: agua o solución nutritiva (SN) al 50, 75 y 100% de la formulación Steiner, transcurrido ese tiempo se evaluó su crecimiento. En muestras de hojas se analizaron los contenidos nutrimentales, y las plantas a las que se aplicó Agua, SN-50%, SN-75% y SN-100%, tuvieron en mg kg-1 de materia seca foliar: 7 225, 10 641, 12 575 y 14 957 de N; 3 017, 5 018, 5 297 y 6 719 de P; 7 827 19 604, 16 220.1 y 18 847 de Mg, acumularon, 282.74, 340.11, 431.98 y 453.05 g de materia seca foliar, así como 75.01, 77.21, 95.92 y 103.14 g de materia seca en la raíz, respectivamente.

Abstract. The effect of chitosan addition on the production of secondary metabolites of Piper auritum ethanolic extracts was tested, as well as the in vitro fungicidal activity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae. Piper auritum plants were divided into six parcels and commercial chitosan was added to half of them. The concentrations of flavonoids, phenols, terpenes, alkaloids and salicylic acid were measured in P. auritum ethanolic extracts and the antifungal activity was measured with the median effective concentration (EC50). The concentrations of total flavonoids, phenols and terpenes were higher with chitosan treatment (respectively 12.8 vs 12.4 μg quercetin equivalent per mg, 12.6 vs. 2.3 μg tannic acid equivalent per 10 mg, and 16.3 vs. 11.6 mg menthol equivalent per 100 mg). However, the alkaloid concentration was reduced by chitosan addition (from 148.2 to 84.5 μg piperine equivalent per mg). Chitosan addition increased the concentration of salicylic acid (from 1.3 to 2.2 μg salicylic acid equivalent per mg). A 4 mg mL-1 ethanolic extract of P. auritum treated with chitosan inhibited 100% of mycelial growth. The EC50 of P. auritum against F. oxysporum f. sp. vanillae was lower with chitosan treatment (1.5 mg mL-1) compared to control (5.1 mg mL-1). Chitosan addition increased secondary metabolite production and in vitro antifungal activity in P. auritum extracts.

Resumen. Se probó el efecto del quitosano sobre la producción de metabolitos secundarios de extractos etanólicos de Piper auritum, así como la actividad fungicida in vitro contra Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vanillae. Las plantas de P. auritum se dividieron en seis parcelas y se añadió quitosano comercial a la mitad de ellas. Se midieron las concentraciones de flavonoides, fenoles, terpenos, alcaloides y ácido salicílico en extractos etanólicos de P. auritum y la actividad antifúngica se midió con la concentración efectiva media (CE50). Las concentraciones totales de flavonoides, fenoles y terpenos fueron más altas con el tratamiento con quitosano (sin quitosano 12.8 versus con quitosano 12.4 μg equivalente de quercetina por mg, 12.6 versus 2.3 μg equivalente de ácido tánico por 10 mg y 16.3 versus 11.6 mg equivalente de mentol por 100 mg). Mientras que la concentración de alcaloides disminuyó mediante la adición de quitosano (de 148.2 a 84.5 μg de equivalente de piperina por mg). La adición de quitosano aumentó la concentración de ácido salicílico (de 1.3 a 2.2 μg de equivalente de ácido salicílico por mg). La concentración de 4 mg mL-1 de extracto etanólico de P. auritum tratado con quitosano inhibió el 100% del crecimiento micelial. El tratamiento con quitosano generó que la CE50 de P. auritum contra F. oxysporum f. sp. vanillae fuera menor (1.5 mg mL-1) respecto al control (5.1 mg mL-1). Se concluye que la adición de quitosano aumentó la producción de metabolitos secundarios y la actividad antifúngica in vitro en extractos de P. auritum.

Summary: Nationally, the use of sewage water for irrigation of agricultural crops has increased over the last twenty years. However, its prolonged use can cause soil degradation and pollution. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of untreated, treated and mixed (1:1 ratio) sewage water on bulk density (Da), hydrogen potential (pH), electric conductivity (CE), cationic exchange capacity (CIC), organic matter (MO), exchangeable sodium percent (PSI) and concentrations of copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) at three soil depths. The investigation was conducted in soils irrigated with sewage water for ten years. The results indicate significant differences among types of water in Da with values of 1.21, 1.25 and 1.50 g cm-3, for the soils irrigated with untreated, treated and mixed sewage water, respectively. Highly significant differences in pH were found: 8.04, 8.60 for the soils irrigated with untreated and treated sewage water. Soil PSI had percentages of 1.64, 4.64 and 6.44 for untreated, treated, and mixed sewage water, respectively. The highest concentrations of copper, lead and cadmium were 1.48, 2.91 y 0.16 mg kg‑1 in soil irrigated with untreated sewage water without exceeding the maximum permissible limits established in the Official Mexican Standard. The highest values of Da were observed at depth 60-90 cm for untreated and treated sewage water with values of 1.32 and 1.42 g cm-3, respectively. The highest concentrations of Pb and Cu were observed at the depth of 0-30 cm with values of 2.26 and 1.44 mg kg-1, respectively. The use of untreated sewage water negatively modifies soil physical-chemical properties and increases heavy metal content in the topsoil.

Resumen: El uso de aguas residuales para el riego de cultivos agrícolas es una práctica que se ha incrementado en los últimos años; sin embargo, su uso prolongado puede causar degradación y contaminación del suelo. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el efecto del uso de aguas residuales cruda, tratada y mezclada (relación 1:1), sobre la densidad aparente (Da), potencial de hidrógeno (pH), conductividad eléctrica (CE), capacidad de intercambio catiónico (CIC), materia orgánica (MO), porciento de sodio intercambiable (PSI), concentración de cobre (Cu), plomo (Pb) y cadmio (Cd) a tres profundidades del suelo. La investigación fue realizada en terrenos irrigados durante un periodo de 10 años con estas clases de agua. Los resultados indican diferencias significativas entre las fuentes de agua evaluadas para el caso de la Da con valores de 1.21, 1.25, y 1.50 g cm-3, para los suelos irrigados con agua residual cruda, tratada y mezclada, respectivamente. Altamente significativas para el pH con resultados de 8.04 y 8.60 para los terrenos regados con agua residual cruda y tratada y el PSI del suelo con porcentajes de 1.64, 4.64 y 6.44 para el agua residual cruda, tratada y mezclada, respectivamente. Las más altas concentraciones de Cu, Pb y Cd, fueron 1.48, 2.91 y 0.16 mg kg-1 para el suelo regado con agua residual cruda, sin superar los límites máximos permisibles establecidos en la Norma Oficial Mexicana. Los valores más altos de Da se observaron en la profundidad 60-90 cm para el agua residual cruda y tratada con valores de 1.32 y 1.42 g cm-3 respectivamente. En la concentración de Pb y Cu, los valores más altos se observaron en la profundidad de 0-30 cm con valores de 2.26 y 1.44 mg kg‑1, respectivamente. La utilización de agua residual cruda modifica negativamente las propiedades físico-químicas e incrementa metales pesados en los primeros estratos del suelo.

The isoflavone aglycones daidzein and genistein are phytoestrogens that ameliorate the symptoms of menopause and assist in the prevention of chronic diseases. These compounds have been studied mainly in soya but have also been detected in faba beans (Vicia faba L.). Since little information is available concerning the content of isoflavone aglycones in faba beans from Mexico, the present study aimed to establish the presence and concentrations of daidzein and genistein in stems of faba bean cultivars from the Mexican central plateau. Cultivars C-281, C-146, C-160, C-89, C-288, C-181, C-93 and C-Zac22 were grown under greenhouse conditions and 6 to 7 week-old stems were harvested. The presence of daidzein and genistein in these tissues was confirmed by thin layer chromatography using a solvent system containing toluene-ethyl acetateacetone- formic acid (74:14.8:7.4:3.8). High-pressure liquid chromatographic analysis revealed significant differences (p≤0.01) in the concentrations of aglycones with levels of genistein in the range 0.30 to 0.85 mg kg-1 dry weight (DW) and of daidzein, which was more abundant in all cultivars, present in the concentration range 34.92 to 59.98 mg kg-1 DW. Stems of cultivars C-89, C-181, C-281 and C-146 were exceptional for their concentrations of isoflavones and may represent good alternative sources of phytoestrogens.

Las isoflavonas agliconas, daidzeína y genisteína, son fitoestrógenos que benefician la salud, mejoran los síntomas de la menopausia y previenen enfermedades crónicas. Estos compuestos se han estudiado principalmente en soya (Glicine max), pero también se han detectado en habas (Vicia faba L.). Dado que hay poca información disponible sobre el contenido de isoflavonas agliconas en habas de México, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo establecer la presencia y las concentraciones de daidzeína y genisteína en tallos de cultivares provenientes de la Meseta Central de México. Los cultivares C-281, C-146, C-160, C-89, C-288, C-181, C-93 y C-Zac22 se sembraron en un invernadero para la obtención de tallos entre 6-7 semanas posteriores a la siembra. Se comprobó la presencia de daidzeína y genisteína por cromatografía en capa fina usando un sistema de solventes de tolueno-acetato de etilo-acetona-ácido fórmico (74:14,8:7,4:3,8). Los resultados de la cromatografía líquida de alta resolución mostraron diferencias significativas (p≤0,01) con concentraciones para genisteína entre 0,30-0,85 mg kg-1 y daidzeína entre 34,92-59,98 mg kg-1 de materia seca, siendo este último el metabolito más abundante en todos los cultivares. Los cultivares C-89, C-181, C-281 y C-146 fueron sobresalientes en la concentración de isoflavonas, por esta razón, pueden ser una buena fuente de fitoestrógenos.

Abstract Laelia halbingeriana Salazar & Soto Arenas is a wild epiphytic orchid endemic to Oaxaca, Mexico, that is collected with no plans for its management or conservation. The objective of this study was to propagate and evaluate the in vitro development of this species in the culture media with a variety of mineral salts and growth regulators. Groups of three plants, 1.2 to 1.4 cm tall, were established in receptacles with culture medium containing 30 g L−1 sucrose, 1 mg L−1 thiamine, 100 mg L−1 inositol and 0.5 mg L−1 benzyl aminopurine (BAP). Proportions of Murashige and Skoog (1962) or Knudson (1946) mineral salts were varied (100, 66 and 33%). The growth regulators indoleacetic acid (IAA) and kinetin (Kin) were used at various concentrations (0.5 + 0.5 mg L−1, 1 + 1 mg L−1 and 2 + 2 mg L−1). pH was adjusted to 5.8, and 5.5 g L−1 agar was added. After 120 days of incubation, the plants that were cultivated in 66% and 100% Knudson media were 2.1 cm tall and had 4.8 roots, while the plants in 100% Murashige and Skoog media were 1.5 cm tall and had 2.5 roots. For 120 days, the plants had a logarithmic trend in vertical growth (R2≥0.96). Several plant characteristics were evaluated simultaneously using a cluster analysis, which found that the best culture medium for Laelia halbingeriana development contains 100% Knudson mineral salts, 0.5 mg L−1 BAP, 0.5 mg L−1 IAA, and 0.5 mg L−1 KIN.

Resumen Laelia halbingeriana es una orquídea epífita silvestre, endémica de Oaxaca, México, colectada sin planes de manejo, y este trabajo tuvo el objetivo de propagar y evaluar el desarrollo in vitro de esta especie en medios de cultivo que variaron en sales minerales y reguladores de crecimiento. Grupo de 3 plantas de 1.2 a 1.4 cm de altura se establecieron en cada frasco con medios de cultivo que tenian 30 g L−1 de sacarosa, 1 mg L−1 de tiamina, 100 mg L−1 de inositol y 0.5 mg L−1 de bencilaminopurina, BAP, variando las sales minerales de Murashige y Skoog (1962) o Knudson (1946) (100, 66 y 33%) los reguladores de crecimiento: ácido indolacético, AIA, y kinetina, Kin, y su concentración (0.5+0.5 mg L−1, 1+1 mg L−1 y 2+2 mg L−1). El pH se ajustó a 5.8, y agregó 5.5 g L−1 de agar. Transcurridos 120 días de incubación, las plantas que estuvieron en medios Knudson 100 y 66 %, tuvieron 2.1 de altura y 4.8 raíces, mientras las plantas en medios Murashige y Skoog 100 % tuvieron 1.5 de altura y 2.5 raíces. Durante 120 días, las plantas mostraron crecimiento en altura con una tendencia logarítmica (R2≥0.96). Al evaluar simultáneamente varias características de plantas mediante análisis clúster, se determinó que el mejor medio de cultivo para el desarrollo de Laelia halbingeriana tenía las sales minerales Knudson al 100%, 0.5 mg L−1 de BAP, 0.5 mg L−1 de AIA, 0.5 mg L−1 de KIN.

This work proposes the reuse of spent ground coffee waste (SCG) extracts as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in acid medium, and the correlation between their anticorrosive efficiency and chemical composition. The extraction method was optimized using a central composite design, and the chemical composition of the extracts was accessed using UV-Vis spectrometry, HPLC, and ICP-OES. EIS and Potentiodynamic Polarization (PP) tests evaluated the anticorrosive properties of the extracts. Total phenol content ranged from 93 mg L-1 to 219 mg L-1 Gallic Acid Equivalent. The highest concentration of phenolic compounds was observed for syringic acid (78.67 mg L-1), while the lowest concentration was verified for (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (0.01 mg L-1). The Pearson correlation coefficient showed no correlation between the Rct and the total phenol content, although, positive correlations with the Rct was observed for caffeic acid, (+)-catechin, ferulic acid, and protocatechuic acid. EIS analysis revealed that all of the extracts could act as corrosion inhibitors. The best performance was verified for C3 extract (IE % = 94.83%). PP tests showed that this extract acted as a mixed inhibitor, with a predominant cathodic effect. Therefore, the valorization of the extracts as corrosion inhibitors was successfully achieved.

Abstract BACKGROUND: DRESS syndrome is a severe, infrequent, and life-threatening toxicodermia. CLINICAL CASE: 17-year-old patient, primitive, diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy, treated with 200 mg of carbamazepine every 12 hours. Two months after the beginning of the treatment, exanthema appeared on the face, trunk and abdomen, itching and fever of 38.5 ºC. She was treated with antihistamines and paracetamol, without improvement. She had generalized erythema, hyperkeratotic plaques on face and trunk, stomatitis and suppurative otitis media. She was admitted to the intensive care area with diagnosis of 30 weeks of pregnancy, with single live intrauterine fetus, without labor and dermatosis under study. Multiple discipline care began with the establishment of the diagnosis of DRESS syndrome. Obstetric ultrasound reported: altered fetal hemodynamics and laboratory studies with increased transaminases. It was decided to terminate the pregnancy by cesarean section, indicated by fetal distress and deterioration in the mother’s health conditions, without complications. It continued with the established treatment. Since the clinical evolution was favorable, she was discharged from the service. CONCLUSIONS: Although DRESS syndrome is rare, physicians should be careful in the care of pregnant patients with comorbidities and identify risk factors that may be related to the condition for timely diagnosis and treatment. When patients are properly treated, the syndrome will disappear spontaneously, with limited damage and uncomplicated recovery.

Resumen ANTECEDENTE: El síndrome de DRESS es una toxicodermia grave, infrecuente y potencialmente mortal. CASO CLÍNICO: Paciente de 17 años, primigesta, con diagnóstico de epilepsia del lóbulo frontal, en tratamiento con 200 mg de carbamacepina cada 12 horas. Dos meses después del inicio del tratamiento le apareció exantema en la cara, el tronco y el abdomen; prurito y fiebre de 38.5 oC. Recibió antihistamínicos y paracetamol, sin mejoría del cuadro. Tuvo eritema generalizado, placas hiperqueratósicas en la cara y el tronco, estomatitis y otitis media supurativa. Ingresó al área de terapia intensiva con 30 semanas de embarazo, con feto único vivo intrauterino, sin trabajo de parto y dermatosis en estudio. La atención multidisciplinaria se inició con el establecimiento del diagnóstico de síndrome de DRESS. El ultrasonido obstétrico reportó: hemodinamia fetal alterada y los estudios de laboratorio informaron: aumento de transaminasas. Se decidió interrumpir el embarazo mediante cesárea, indicada por sufrimiento del feto y deterioro en las condiciones de salud de la madre, que transcurrió sin complicaciones. La paciente continuó con el tratamiento establecido y ante la evolución clínica favorable se dio de alta del servicio médico. CONCLUSIONES: Si bien el síndrome de DRESS es un trastorno excepcional, las pacientes embarazadas que lo sufren y tienen comorbilidades deben estudiarse cuidadosamente para identificar los factores de riesgo asociados con el padecimiento, para que el diagnóstico y el tratamiento sean oportunos. Cuando las pacientes se tratan de manera adecuada, el síndrome desaparece espontáneamente, con limitación del daño y recuperación sin complicaciones.
