Com a finalidade de verificar o valor de alguns atributos para avaliação da qualidade do sêmen congelado, através da prenhez, duzentas e noventa e sete ovelhas da raça Corriedale foram inseminadas, intra-uterinamente, por laparoscopia. Utilizou-se cio sincronizado, com pessários vaginais contendo 50 mg de MAP (acetato de medroxiprogesterona), por 12 dias, e 400 UI de eCG (Equine chorionic gonadotrophin) no 12º dia. O sêmen, proveniente de 32 carneiros, foi congelado em pellets. Para a inseminação, utilizaram-se amostras de sêmen com diferentes padrões de qualidade preestabelecida, de motilidade progressiva (MP) ao descongelamento, média da MP durante todo o período de incubação (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 horas), a 37ºC, MP após cinco horas de incubação e percentagem de células, morfologicamente, íntegras. O diagnóstico de gestação foi realizado por ecografia 40 dias após a inseminação. Obtiveram-se percentuais de prenhez entre 60 e 80% somente quando as amostras apresentaram um movimento progressivo superior a 40% (68,0%), uma MP média e após 5 horas de incubação mínima de 20% (64,4 e 72,3%) e uma MP às 5 horas de incubação quando superior a 10% (61,1 e 78,5%). Com relação ao percentual de células íntegras, as amostras com um mínimo de 40% proporcionaram prenhez de 61,7 e 66,4%, enquanto nas com menos de 40% o percentual foi de apenas 15,2%. Os parâmetros estudados demonstraram eficiência para estimar a capacidade fecundante do sêmen congelado para utilização em inseminação laparoscópica.

The aim of the present study was to verify some parameters for evaluating frozen semen, throughout pregnancy rate, in sheep. Two hundred and ninety-seven ewes from the Corriedale breed were inseminated by laparoscopic method. The estrus were synchronized with intravaginal sponge, containing 50 mg of MAP (medroxyprogesterone acetate), for 12 days and eCG (Equine Chorionic Gonadotrophin; 400 IU) was given in a single intramuscular injection at the moment of withdrawing the sponges. The semen from 32 rams was frozen in pellets. Semen of different qualities was used. The quality of the semen was determined by evaluating sperm motility at thawing, sperm motility after 5 hours incubation, the mean of sperm motility during incubation period (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 hours) and the percentage of normal sperm cells. Each of these parameters was correlated with pregnancy after laparoscopic insemination. The diagnosis of pregnancy was performed by ultrasonography at 40 days after insemination. The percentages of pregnancy were from 60% to 80% only when the sperm samples exhibited sperm motility higher than 40% (68.1), mean of sperm motility and after thawing at least of 20% (64.4 and 72.3) and sperm motility after 5 hours of incubation superior to 10% (61.1 and 78.6). With regard to the percentage of viable cells, the samples with at least 40% of sperm motility resulted in 61.8% and 66.4% of pregnancy while sperm motility less than 40% resulted in only 15.2%. The parameters investigated were efficient to evaluate the capacity of frozen semen to fertilize sheep to use in laparoscopic insemination.

O presente experimento teve por finalidade verificar o efeito na prenhez de diferentes técnicas de inseminação cervical com sêmen congelado, em 234 ovelhas Corriedale, em cio natural. Utilizou-se sêmen congelado em peletes de três carneiros Suffolk e um Corriedale. Cento e trinta e seis ovelhas foram inseminadas por via cervical, com (60) e sem (76) tração cervical. Como grupo controle, noventa e oito ovelhas foram submetidas à inseminação laparoscópica. Para a análise do índice de prenhez, verificado através da ecografia, os graus de penetração foram classificados em cervical superficial e profundo. Considerando-se todas as ovelhas submetidas à inseminação cervical, obteve-se resultados de prenhez de 44,19% e 32,26%, respectivamente para maior e menor profundidade de deposição. A inseminação cervical sem tração resultou em 28,95% de prenhez, o que é estatisticamente inferior aos resultados observados por laparoscopia (57,14%; p < 0,001) e similares aos obtidos com tração cervical (45,00%). No entanto, a percentagem de prenhez foi semelhante entre a inseminação por tração cervical e laparoscópica. Os resultados são indicativos de que a inseminação com tração cervical proporciona resultados de prenhez análogos aos obtidos com a laparoscopia.

The present study aimed to verify the effect of different cervical insemination techniques with frozen semen on pregnancy of 234 Corriedale ewes, in natural estrus. Frozen semen in pellets from three Suffolk and one Corriedale ram were used in this experiment. One hundred and thirty-six ewes were inseminated through the cervix, with (60) and without (76) cervical traction. As the control group, ninety-eight ewes were submitted to laparoscopic insemination. Pregnancy rate was verified by ultrasound, the data were divided in superficial and deep penetration based in the degree that the catheter passed through the cervix. Considering the total number of ewes submitted to cervical insemination, the pregnancy rate was 44.19% and 32.26% for deep and superficial cervical deposition of the semen, respectively. The cervical insemination without traction resulted in 28.95% of pregnancy, which is statistically lower to that observed by laparoscopic insemination (57.14%; p < 0.001) and similar to the results obtained with cervical traction (45.00%). However, the percentage of pregnancy was similar between the insemination by cervical traction and laparoscopy. In conclusion, the results suggest that pregnancy rate of ewes, in natural estrus, is similar when either cervical traction or laparoscopy is used to inseminate with frozen semen.

A forma de abertura, o comprimento, o diâmetro e o número de dobras de 272 cérvices, provenientes de ovelhas abatidas, foram examinados, sendo 134 da raça Ideal e 138 da Corriedale. Adicionalmente, a forma de abertura de 136 ovelhas Corriedale, em serviço de inseminação artificial, foi examinada. A forma de flap foi a mais freqüente em ambas as raças, com uma média de 52,2%, confirmado também nos animais inseminados. O comprimento cervical médio foi de 5,9cm para a raça Ideal e 5,7cm para a raça Corriedale (p<0,05). O diâmetro médio do cérvix foi de 0,8cm, em ambas as raças. O número de dobras cervicais foi maior para a raça Ideal (4,9) em relação à Corriedale (4,6; p<0,01).Com a finalidade de verificar a penetrabilidade de um cateter de inseminação no cérvix, 136 ovelhas Corriedale, em cio natural, foram submetidas à tentativas de penetração cervical, com (60) e sem (76) tração do tecido adjacente ao orifício cervical. O grau de profundidade alcançado pelo cateter foi classificado numa escala crescente de 0 a 3. Os graus 1 e 3 de penetração foram, respectivamente, o mais e o menos frequente (p<0,0001). Uma maior profundidade de penetração foi alcançada com o uso da tração cervical.

The opening form, length, diameter and number of folds of 272 cervices (134 from Ideal breed and 138 from Corriedale breed), from slaughtered ewes, were investigated. In addition, the cervical opening form of 136 Corriedale ewes, during insemination, was examined. The flap cervical form was observed in 52.2% of the total number of the cervices examined, which was also found in the inseminated animals. The average of the cervical length was 5.9cm for the Ideal breed and 5.7cm for the Corriedale breed (p<0.05). The average of the cervix diameter was 0.8cm in both breeds. The number of cervical folds was greater in the Ideal breed (4.9) than in the Corriedale breed (4.6; p<0.01). A catheter was tried to penetrate through the cervix of those 136 Corriedale ewes during the natural estrus to verify the degree of penetration. The catheter was attempted to pass the cervix with (60) and without (76) cervical traction, using a scale from 0 to 3 to characterize the proportion in which the catheter penetrated through the cervix. The penetration degree one and three were respectively the most and the least frequent. Using traction for insemination, greater penetration was obtained than without traction (p<0.01).
