BACKGROUND: The contributions of indigenous innovation and foreign direct investments (FDI) inflows are critical elements of economic growth and hence very important for developing economies. FDI inflows have been recognised as having a direct influence on innovation in host countries. The relationship between these two variables is explored and well documented in literature. However, these studies have focused on linear relationships between FDI and indigenous innovation, ignoring a possible asymmetric relationship between them AIM: The current study aims to analyse the existence of hidden cointegration and asymmetries between the two variables using a non-linear approach. SETTING: The focus of this study is on developing countries. Five countries are selected from the regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. These countries are chosen on the basis of economic status (all countries are developing countries) and data availability METHODS: The study employs panel data of 20 developing countries from 1993 to 2017. The study employs the non-linear auto-regressive distributed lag model to test for an asymmetric relationship between the variables. The variables are deconstructed into their negative and positive components to identify possible hidden cointegration and asymmetries that exist between them. This method allows for the detection of long-run asymmetric relationships in a non-linear fashion. RESULTS: The empirical findings show that a long-run cointegration and asymmetric relationship exists between the negative and positive components of FDI and indigenous innovation. For the four regions, positive changes in FDI directly influence positive changes in indigenous innovation. Negative changes in FDI have no effect on the positive changes in indigenous innovation in the countries under study. However, negative changes in FDI influence negative changes in indigenous innovation across the four regions. CONCLUSION: FDI inflows have a positive and significant effect on indigenous innovation in developing countries, and reduction in FDI can lead to reduction in innovation output in the long term. Policy directions in developing countries will be effective if they are centred on non-linear relationships between the investigated variables.

AlCoCuFeMnNi high-entropy alloy coating was prepared by plasma cladding method. The phase structure and microstructure of AlCoCuFeMnNi coating was investigated by XRD, SEM and EDS respectively. The results show that AlCoCuFeMnNi caotings have two BCC phase structure and typical dendrite structure and form good metallurgical bonding with substrate. The dendrite is the typical spinodal decomposition structure. After CeO2 doping, the change of peak intensity and FWHM is obvious due to the effect of Ce on the improvement of grain growth, microstructure and crystallinity. The addition of CeO2 is beneficial to reduce the cladding defect, make dendrite arm spacing enlarged and spinodal decomposition structure refined, and improve element segregation owing to the melioration effect in the temperature gradient, solidification rate, fluidity, wettability, and surface tension.

Two consolidated copper samples were prepared by consolidation of a gas atomized powder using two different routes of spark plasma sintering (SPS), respectively. The first route was direct SPS of copper powder at 800 °C for 10 minutes, and the second route was compacting copper powder by die-pressing to produce a powder compact followed by SPS of the powder compact at 800 °C for 10 minutes. The microstructures and tensile mechanical properties and the fracture surfaces of specimens have been studied. It was found that the level of consolidation of the sample made using Route 1 was higher than that of the sample made using Route 2, as reflected by the relatively higher strength and better ductility of the first sample than those of the second sample. The lower consolidation level of the second sample was depicted by the higher volume fraction of cavities in the fracture surfaces of specimens which were formed by separation of the powder particles at the weakly bonded interparticle boundaries. The grain sizes of the first sample were larger than those of the second sample. The reasons for the differences in the levels of consolidation and grain sizes associated with two SPS routes are discussed.

The myeloid differentiation primary response protein 88 (Myd88) is an essential adaptor protein, which mediates in all Toll-like receptor (TLR) members signal transduction, except for TLR3. In this study, the 4464 bp genomic sequence of porcine Myd88 was first isolated, whereupon tissue distribution, chromosome mapping and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) were analyzed. Our results revealed that porcine Myd88 gene, which was located at chromosome 13 linked with marker S0288 (distance = 40 cR; LOD = 8.66), was widely expressed in all the examined tissues. There were 16 potential SNPs in the isolated genome fragment. SNP 797T/C in the first intron was studied, with no significant association being found between the genotype and immune traits in pigs (p > 0.05). The porcine Myd88 protein contained both the death domain (DD) and the Toll/IL-1 receptor domain (TIR). Leu residues, essential for its structure, were the most abundant encountered in the DD. The TIR contained two conserved motifs which may play important roles in the Myd88 function.
