Hybrid magnetite materials are interesting for both biomedical and catalytic applications due to their well-known biocompatibility, as well as their magnetic and electric properties. In this work we prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) coated with tannic acid (TA), a natural polyphenol, through two different synthetic routes, aiming to understand the influence of TA in the synthesis step and contribute to the development of water-dispersible magnetic materials. The coating process was verified by information obtained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta-potential and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The incorporation of TA after Fe3O4 NPs production generated spherical NPs smaller than 10 nm, suggesting that TA plays a fundamental role in the nucleation and organization of Fe3O4 NPs. Data from both density functional theory (DFT) and FTIR allowed us to infer that Fe3O4 interacts mainly with the carbonyl groups of TA. Hybrid materials having improved water-dispersibility are very attractive for biomedical applications.

OBJETIVOS: Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a prevalência do refluxo gastroesofágico em crianças com asma e avaliar se o índice de refluxo tem uma boa sensibilidade e especificidade para o diagnóstico de refluxo gastroesofágico. MÉTODOS: Foram estudadas 69 crianças de 1 a 5 anos, com asma, através do exame de pHmetria de 24 horas. RESULTADOS: A idade das crianças variou de 12,4 a 63,1 meses, com uma média de 30,79, sendo que 62,3% eram do sexo masculino. O refluxo gastroesofágico foi observado em 68,1% das crianças. Quando separados os pacientes em duas categorias (asma moderada e grave), a associação foi de 58,5 e 82,1%, respectivamente. O refluxo gastroesofágico oculto ocorreu em 31,8% dos casos. O índice de refluxo mostrou uma sensibilidade de 89,4%, especificidade de 95,5%, valor preditivo positivo de 97,7% e valor preditivo negativo de 80,8%. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados obtidos neste estudo indicam uma elevada associação entre o refluxo gastroesofágico e a asma e sugerem que o índice de refluxo, como parâmetro único, tem uma boa sensibilidade e especificidade para o diagnóstico da doença do refluxo gastroesofágico.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims at verifying the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux in asthmatic children, and at determining the sensitivity and specificity of the reflux index for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. METHODS: Sixty-nine children, aged 1-5 years, with asthma, were studied by 24-hour pH monitoring. The patients were randomly selected. RESULTS: Ages varied from 12.4 to 63.1 months, mean age = 30.79 months, and 62.3% were males. Gastroesophageal reflux was observed in 68.1% of the children. The patients were divided into two groups, moderate and severe asthma, and gastroesophageal reflux was diagnosed in 58.5 and 82.1% of the cases, respectively. Occult gastroesophageal reflux occurred in 31.8% of the cases. The reflux index showed an sensitivity of 89.4%, specificity of 95.5%, positive predictive value of 97.7% and negative predictive value of 80.8%. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicate a relationship between gastroesophageal reflux and asthma, and suggest that the reflux index as a single parameter of pH monitoring has good sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

OBJETIVO: avaliar o efeito do tamoxifeno no perfil lipídico e renal de ratos controles e diabéticos. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados 40 ratos fêmeas Wistar (180-220g peso corporal), divididos randomicamente em 4 grupos: C (n=10, receberam veículo), T (n=10, tratados com tamoxifeno, 0,3mg/kg/dia), D (n=10, diabéticos induzidos por estreptozotocina, 45mg/Kg) e DT (n=10, diabéticos tratados com tamoxifeno). Foram dosados os analitos, glicose, colesterol total, triglicérides, proteínas totais, albumina, uréia e creatinina utilizando Kits Labtest através do analisador Cobas Mira (Alemanha,1996). RESULTADOS: o grupo T apresentou diminuição do colesterol total e triglicérides em relação ao C, e o grupo D um aumento em relação aos demais. Para as proteínas totais foi observado um aumento no Grupo T em relação ao C. A albumina diminuiu nos grupos D e DT em relação aos grupos C e T. Nos níveis de uréia houve um aumento no grupo D e DT em relação aos grupos C e T. CONCLUSÃO: Em relação ao perfil lipídico foi constatado que durante o período de 60 dias o tratamento com tamoxifeno promoveu uma diminuição dos níveis séricos de colesterol e triglicérides, mesmo associado a condição de Diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of tamoxifen in the lipidic and renal profile in diabetic and control rats. METHODS: 40 female Wistar rats had been used (180-220g corporal weight), divided randomly in 4 groups: C (n=10, received vehicle), T (n=10, treated with tamoxifen, 0.3mg/kg/day), D (n=10, diabetic induced by streptozotocin, 45mg/Kg) and DT (n=10, diabetic treated with tamoxifen). Glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, total proteins, albumin, urea and creatinin were analyzed using Labtest Kits through the Cobas Mira analyzer (Germany, 1996). RESULTS: Group T presented a reduction of total cholesterol and triglyceride in relation to C, and group D an increase in relation to the other ones. About the total proteins it was observed an increasing in Group T in relation to C. The albumin diminished in groups D and DT in relation to C and T. The urea levels increased in groups D and DT in relation to C and T. CONCLUSION: In relation to the lipidic profile it was evidenced that during the period of 60 days the treatment with tamoxifen promoted a reduction in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the serum, even associated to the condition of Diabetes mellitus.
