Este estudo objetivou realizar atividades de extensão em fitoterapia, a partir de um levantamento de dados sobre as plantas medicinais, fitoterápicos e medicamentos convencionais utilizados por 292 idosos frequentadores de um programa de Atividades Físicas e Recreativas para a Terceira Idade (AFRID), na cidade de Uberlândia-MG, utilizando como instrumento de investigação, um questionário semiestruturado. Dentre os entrevistados verificamos que 88% utilizavam medicamentos prescritos, principalmente para o controle da hipertensão. O uso de plantas medicinais foi relatado por 76,7% dos idosos, sendo as mais citadas: Cymbopogon citratus, Mentha sp., Rosmarinus officinalis, Plectranthus barbatus, Ocimum gratissimum, e Matricaria chamomilla. Dezesseis (5,5%) idosos utilizavam fitoterápicos, principalmente preparados a partir de extratos de Ginkgo biloba, Aesculus hippocastanum e Passiflora incarnata em associação com Crataegus oxyacantha e Salix alba. O uso concomitante de plantas medicinais e fitoterápicos com medicamentos convencionais foi relatado por 86,2% e 81,3% dos idosos, respectivamente. Após a análise dos dados percebemos a necessidade do desenvolvimento de ações educativas para informar e conscientizar os idosos sobre o uso da fitoterapia. Elaboramos uma caderneta e uma cartilha para promoção da difusão dessas informações e o aprimoramento do uso da fitoterapia entre os idosos e, dessa forma, alcançar os profissionais de saúde sobre os riscos e benefícios dessa terapêutica; contribuindo assim para o uso seguro e racional da fitoterapia.

This study aimed to carry out extension activities in herbal medicine from a survey of data on medicinal plants, herbal and conventional medicines used by 292 elderly people who attended a program of physical activity called Physical and Recreational Activities for the Elderly, in Uberlândia-MG, using a semi-structured questionnaire as means of investigation. Among the respondents 88% used prescription drugs, primarily for control of hypertension. The use of medicinal plants was reported by 76.7% of the elderly, being the most cited ones: Cymbopogon citratus, Mentha sp., Rosmarinus officinalis, Plectranthus barbatus, Ocimum gratissimum. and Matricaria chamomilla. Sixteen respondents (5,5%) used herbal medicines, especially those prepared from extracts of Ginkgo biloba, Aesculus hippocastanum, and Passiflora incarnata L. in association with Crataegus oxyacantha L. and Salix alba. The concomitant use of medicinal plants and herbal medicines with conventional drugs was reported by 86.2% and 81.3% of participants, respectively. After analyzing the data, we detected the need to develop educational activities to inform and educate seniors about the use of herbal medicine, encompassing the development a book and a primer for initial dissemination of this information, improving herbal medicine use among the elderly. This course of action would allow a greater knowledge of health professionals about the risks and benefits of this therapy, thereby contributing to the safe and rational use of herbal medicine.

Objetivando verificar a ocorrência de insetos-praga em alimento industrializado para cães, comercializado na região metropolitana do Recife, amostras de 15 diferentes lojas agropecuárias foram submetidas à extração de insetos em funil de Berlese-Tullgren. Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Tenebrionidae) (55,2%) foi o mais freqüente, seguido por Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Cucujidae) (31,3%), Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) (Bostrichidae) (8,9%) e Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius) (Anobiidae) (4,7%), todos Coleoptera. Recife apresentou o maior índice de infestação (53,6%), seguido por Olinda (34,4%) e Jaboatão dos Guararapes (12,0%). A infestação por coleópteros ocorre com elevada freqüência na região, podendo representar uma ameaça principalmente nos produtos comercializados a granel.

With the purpose of verifying the occurrence of insect pests in dog food commercialized in the Metropolitan Region of Recife, samples from 15 different pet stores were submitted to the extraction of insects in a Berlese-Tullgren apparatus. Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Tenebrionidae) (55.2%) was the most frequent specie followed by Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Cucujidae) (31.3%), Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabricius) (Bostrichidae) (8.9%) and Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius) (Anobiidae) (4.7%), all from Coleoptera. Recife showed the highest rate of infestation (53.6%), followed by Olinda (34.4%) and Jaboatão dos Guararapes (12.0%). The infestation by coleopters in the region occurs with high frequency and may represent a threat mainly in commercialized products in bulk.

Em geral, a eficiência de herbicidas inibidores da ACCase é reduzida quando da aplicação em conjunto com herbicidas latifolicidas. Dois experimentos - em casa de vegetação e campo - objetivaram determinar a existência de antagonismo nas associações de clodinafop-propargyl a metsulfuron-methyl ou 2,4-D, para controle de azevém anual. Em casa de vegetação, o delineamento foi o completamente casualizado, com 21 tratamentos compostos pela aplicação de clodinafop (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 e 96 g ha-1) isolado ou em mistura com metsulfuron-methyl (2 e 4 g ha-1) ou 2,4-D (470 g ha-1). Em campo, o delineamento foi de blocos casualizados, com 12 tratamentos, arranjados em fatorial 6 x 2, composto pelos níveis de clodinafop-propargyl (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 e 96 g ha¹) isolado ou em mistura com metsulfuron-methyl (2 g ha-1). A avaliação visual de controle, em casa de vegetação, revelou I50 das misturas de clodinafop-propargyl + metsulfuron-methyl (2 e 4 g ha-1) ou clodinafop-propargyl + 2,4-D (470 g ha-1), respectivamente, 33, 84 e 151% superiores ao de clodinafop-propargyl isolado. Já para matéria verde de azevém, o I50 das misturas supracitadas foi, respectivamente, 119, 244 e 72% superior ao de clodinafop-propargyl isolado. Em campo, ocorreu redução da matéria verde de azevém com a elevação dos níveis de clodinafop-propargyl isolado, mas não houve variação da matéria verde com a elevação dos níveis de clodinafop-propargyl, em associação a metsulfuron-methyl. Os resultados evidenciam a existência de antagonismo entre clodinafop-propargyl e os herbicidas metsulfuron-methyl e 2,4-D. São feitas considerações sobre as possíveis vantagens da aplicação dos herbicidas em mais de uma operação de controle, em comparação à associação entre graminicidas e latifolicidas.

The efficacy of ACCase inhibitors is usually reduced when tank-mixed with broad leaf herbicides. A greenhouse and a field experiments were carried out to determine the existence of antagonistic effects of clodinafop-propargyl associated with metsulfuron methyl or 2,4-D to control Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum). In the greenhouse experiment, 21 treatments were tested, composed by clodynafop(0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 g ha-1) alone or tank-mixed with metsulfuron (2 and 4 g ha-1) or 2,4-D (470 g ha-1). In the field experiment, twelve treatments were set up in a factorial 6 x 2, composed by clodinafop (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 g ha-1) alone or tank-mixed with metsulfuron (2 g ha-1). In the greenhouse experiment, the control (visual evaluation), I50 from the mixtures with metsulfuron (2 and 4 g ha-1) or 2,4-D (470 g ha-1) were 33, 84 and 151% higher than clodinafop applied alone. The I50 from the rye live matter from the mixtures cited above were, respectively, 119, 244 and 72% higher than clodinafop applied alone. In the field experiment, rye live matter reduction was observed with increase of the levels of clodinafop applied alone, but rye live matter did not decrease, changing the levels of clodinafop tank-mixed with metsulfuron. The results reveal the antagonistic effect of tank-mixtures of clodinafop and metsulfuron or 2,4-D. We did make some considerations on the advantages of applying herbicides in more than one control operation, in comparison to graminicide and latifolicide mixtures.

Populações de Euphorbia heterophylla resistentes (R) aos herbicidas inibidores da enzima acetolactato sintase encontram-se amplamente disseminadas em várias regiões do Brasil. Resíduos culturais de várias espécies apresentam elevado potencial para suprimir o desenvolvimento de plantas daninhas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de diferentes níveis de resíduos das partes aéreas de sorgo, milho e aveia na supressão de E. heterophylla resistente a herbicidas. Foram realizados dois experimentos em vasos com delineamento experimental completamente casualizado, com quatro repetições. No primeiro, os tratamentos foram arranjados em fatorial 4x6, em que o fator A representou três híbridos de sorgo (AG-2501, Dow 1P-400 e BR-501) e um de milho (AG-3010); e o fator B, seis níveis de resíduos na superfície do solo (0, 3,25, 6,5, 9,75, 13 e 26 t ha-1). Os tratamentos do segundo experimento foram arranjados em fatorial 2 x 6, em que A representou as espécies (sorgo e aveia) e B os níveis de resíduos (0, 1,12, 3,25, 6,5, 13 e 26 t ha-1). A emergência das plantas de E. heterophylla foi atrasada e reduzida. Estimou-se que seriam necessárias 28,6 t ha-1 de palha de sorgo para causar redução de 50% na emergência de plântulas. O número de folhas diminuiu com a elevação dos níveis de resíduos da parte aérea de sorgo e milho. Níveis intermediários de resíduos de Dow 1P-400 reduziram mais o IVE do que os outros híbridos de sorgo, entretanto não houve diferenças entre genótipos quanto à emergência de plântulas. Resíduos da parte aérea de aveia não foram eficazes em reduzir a emergência de E. heterophylla.

Euphorbia heterophylla populations resistant to ALS-inhibitors were reported in many regions in Brazil. Straw residues of many species have shown high potential to supress weeds. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of different rates of sorghum, corn and black oat shoot residues in supressing emergence and growth of E. heterophylla resistant to herbicides. Two experiments were conducted in pots in a completely randomized design, with four replicates, arranged in a factorial scheme. In the first trial, factor A was composed by sorghum (AG-2501, Dow 1P-400 and Br-501) and corn (AG-3010) hybrids and factor B by six rates of sorghum and corn residues above soil surface (0, 3.25, 6.5, 9.75, 13 and 26 t ha-1 ). In the second trial, factor A was composed by two species (sorghum and oat) and factor B by shoot residue rates (0, 1.12, 3.25, 6.5, 13 and 26 t ha-1). Emergence of E. heterophylla plants was delayed and decreased. The total number of leaves decreased with increase of sorghum and corn straw rate. However, it was estimated that 28.6 t ha-1 of sorghum residues would be necessary to decrease 50% emergence. Dow 1P-400 sorghum straw at intermediate rates presented a greater potential to decrease IVE than the other sorghum hybrids, but no difference was observed between emergence of sorghum genotypes. Black oat shoot straw was not efficient in decreasing E. heterophylla emergence.

The collagen structure of isolated and in situ liver granuloma from Swiss Webster mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni was sequentially and three-dimensionally analyzed during different times of infection (early acute, acute, transitional acute-chronic, and chronic phases) by laser scanning confocal microscopy and electron scanning variable vacuum microscopy. The initial granuloma structure is characterized by vascular collagen residues and by anchorage points (or fiber radiation centers), from where collagenous fibers are angularly shed and self-assembled. During the exudative-productive stage, the self-assembly of these fibers minimizes energy and mass through continuous tension and focal compression. The curvature or angles between collagen fibers probably depends on the fibroblastic or myofibroblastic organization of stress fibers. Gradually, the loose unstable lattice of the exudative-productive stage transforms into a highly packed and stable architecture as a result of progressive compactness. The three-dimensional architecture of granulomas provides increased tissue integrity, efficient distribution of soluble compounds and a haptotactic background to the cells.
