Abstract Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 infection is characterized by hyperproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines that impact the cardiovascular system. In addition, several cardiovascular risk factors, like arterial hypertension, were identified as risk factors for greater disease severity and mortality in these patients. The objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of hypertension in patients with COVID-19 and its association with complications, comorbidities and mortality. Methods: Retrospective study of the patients with COVID-19 admitted to Internal Medicine ward between March 2020 and February 2021. Data was collected from the digital clinical file. Logistic regression was applied to clarify the effect of independent variables on mortality. Results: The sample included 1291 patients with COVID-19, a median age of 73 years (IQR: 22) and male gender predominance (n = 701, 54.3%). There were 65.5% (n = 845) of patients with hypertension, 54.9% (n = 709) dyslipidemia and about a third had diabetes mellitus and obesity (31 and 38%, respectively). Comparatively to the non-hypertensive patients, hypertensive group presented with higher prevalence of other cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes mellitus, obesity and dyslipidemia (p <0.001)) and lower functionality and more comorbidities (as calculated by AVDezIS and Charlson modified scores, p<0.001). There was also higher proportion of severe COVID-19 disease (p = 0.003), greater number of patients admitted to intensive care units (p <0.001) and higher in-hospital mortality (p <0.001). Hypertension was not a mortality predictive factor in these patients. Conclusion: In this study, patients with hypertension presented with higher severity of COVID-19 disease, higher pre-valence of other cardiovascular risk factors, complications during hospitalization and in-hospital mortality, however, its presence was not a mortality predictive factor.

Resumo Introdução: A infeção por SARS-CoV-2 caracteriza-se por um estado de sobreprodução de citocinas pró-inflamatórias que podem culminar com atingimento cardiovascular. Além disso, vários fatores de risco cardiovascular, como a hipertensão arterial (HTA), têm sido associados a maior severidade e mortalidade na COVID-19. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a prevalência da HTA nos doentes com COVID-19 e a sua associação com complicações, comorbilidades e mortalidade. Métodos: Estudo retrospetivo dos doentes admitidos em enfermaria por COVID-19 entre março de 2020 e fevereiro de 2021. Foi realizada colheita de dados através do processo clínico. Aplicada regressão logística para clarificar o efeito de variáveis independentes na mortalidade. Resultados: Incluíram-se 1291 doentes com COVID-19 internados no período descrito, com mediana de idades de 73 anos (AIQ: 22) e predomínio do sexo masculino (n = 701, 54,3%). Observou-se que 65,5% (n = 845) dos doentes tinham HTA, 54,9% (n = 709) dislipidemia e 31% e 38% tinham diabetes mellitus e obesidade, respetivamente. Comparativamente com os indivíduos sem HTA, o grupo com HTA apresentou maior prevalência de fatores de risco cardiovascular (diabetes, obesidade e dislipidemia, p <0,001) bem como menor grau de funcionalidade e maior carga de doença (respetivamente score de AVDezIs e Charlson modificado, p <0,001). Verificou-se uma maior proporção de doença grave (p = 0,003), maior número admissões em Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos (p <0,001) e maior taxa de mortalidade intra-hospitalar (p <0,001). A presença de HTA não se revelou como preditor de mortalidade nos doentes com COVID-19. Conclusão: Nesta amostra os doentes com HTA apresentaram múltiplos fatores de risco cardiovascular, doença COVID-19 mais grave, mais complicações e mortalidade intra-hospitalares, contudo, a sua presença não foi um fator preditor de mortalidade por COVID-19.

ABSTRACT. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of diets with reduced energy level content, supplemented with carbohydrase, on broiler performance and the coefficient of metabolizability of nutrients. A total of 720 one-day-old male Cobb-500 chicks were distributed in a completely randomized design, with six treatments, eight repetitions of 15 birds each. The treatments were: (1) a positive control, basal diet to meet the requirements of broiler chickens (PC); (2) a negative control, basal diet with a reduction of 80 kcal kg-1 (NC); (3) NC + alphagalactosydase; (4) NC + xylanase; (5) NC + xylanase and alphagalactosydase, and (6) NC + enzymatic blend (alphagalactosydase, xylanase, pectinase and amylase). The nutrient digestibility was not improved by use of enzymes. At 7 days of age, the broilers which were fed diets supplemented with enzymes showed a lower feed intake (FI) and better feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the broilers fed on PC. Both the NC and enzymatic blend resulted in a worse performance of the broilers at 21, 35 and 42 days old. The use of alphagalactosydase and xylanase, isolated or in combination, in a corn-soybean meal-based diet is effective in improving the growth performance of broilers fed energy-reduced diets.

ABSTRACT: Children and teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have clinical characteristics that can lead them to challenges in understanding and participating in the new world context and they are more likely to suffer the impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this sense, the goal of this study was to analyze whether the pandemic has had an impact on children and teenagers with ASD. This is a systematic review carried out in the electronic databases PubMed, DOAJ, BVS, SciELO and Oásis. Only studies that had children and teenagers with ASD were included. After the searches, a total of 28 articles were included for review analysis. The results show that aspects related to behavior, mental health, routine, interruption of face-to-face attendance and family and school context had greater negative impacts, while communication and socialization had positive impacts. Not many studies were identified regarding the impacts of the pandemic on the motor aspects and the change of calls to telemonitoring. It is concluded that the pandemic caused significant impacts on children and adolescents with ASD, so, with the resumption of face-to-face activities, this audience will need more attention.

RESUMO: Crianças e adolescentes com Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) apresentam características clínicas que podem levá-las a terem desafios em compreender e participar do novo contexto mundial e estarem sujeitas a sofrerem os impactos causados pela pandemia da covid-19. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar se a pandemia trouxe impactos para crianças e adolescentes com TEA. Trata-se de uma revisão sistemática realizada nas bases de dados eletrônicas PubMed, DOAJ, BVS, SciELO e Oásis. Foram incluídos apenas estudos que tiveram como público crianças e adolescentes com TEA. Após as buscas, um total de 28 artigos foram incluídos para a análise da revisão. Os resultados apontam que aspectos relacionados ao comportamento, à saúde mental, à rotina, à interrupção dos atendimentos presenciais e ao contexto familiar e escolar apresentaram maiores impactos negativos, enquanto comunicação e socialização tiveram impactos positivos. Não foram identificados muitos estudos em relação aos impactos da pandemia sobre os aspectos motores e a mudança dos atendimentos para telemonitoramento. Concluiu-se que a pandemia causou impactos significativos em crianças e adolescentes com TEA; assim sendo, com a retomada das atividades presenciais, esse público precisará de maior atenção.

Abstract This exploratory study investigated whether children with dental decay were more likely to have COVID-19 than those without caries. The children underwent dental inspection and blood collection for detection of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Fifty-four children aged 6 to 9 years participated in the survey, which was conducted between March and June 2020 in the municipality of Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil. The diagnosis of caries was performed using the dmft and DMFT indices. Parents reported signs and symptoms of sickness in their children during this period. The serology test aimed to verify the immune response of the children to coronavirus by detecting IgM/IgG antibodies. Statistical analyses were performed at P < 0.05. The majority of the children presented caries (68.5%). Of the nine children who tested positive for COVID-19 (16.7%), eight presented IgG antibodies to the virus, and only one had IgG and IgM antibodies to SARS-CoV2. Children who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 had a higher percentage of caries lesions than those who tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 (77.8% vs 65.9%), but this difference was not statistically significant.

Abstract Background Despite no evidence showing benefits of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine with or without azithromycin for COVID-19 treatment, these medications have been largely prescribed in Brazil. Objectives To assess outcomes, including in-hospital mortality, electrocardiographic abnormalities, hospital length-of-stay, admission to the intensive care unit, and need for dialysis and mechanical ventilation, in hospitalized COVID-19 patients who received chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, and to compare outcomes between those patients and their matched controls. Methods A retrospective multicenter cohort study that included consecutive laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients from 37 Brazilian hospitals from March to September 2020. Propensity score was used to select matching controls by age, sex, cardiovascular comorbidities, and in-hospital use of corticosteroid. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results From 7,850 COVID-19 patients, 673 (8.6%) received hydroxychloroquine and 67 (0.9%) chloroquine. The median age in the study group was 60 years (46 - 71) and 59.1% were women. During hospitalization, 3.2% of patients presented side effects and 2.2% required therapy discontinuation. Electrocardiographic abnormalities were more prevalent in the chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine group (13.2% vs. 8.2%, p=0.01), and the long corrected QT interval was the main difference (3.6% vs. 0.4%, p<0.001). The median hospital length of stay was longer in the HCQ/CQ + AZT group than in controls (9.0 [5.0, 18.0] vs. 8.0 [4.0, 14.0] days). There was no statistical differences between groups in intensive care unit admission (35.1% vs. 32.0%; p=0.282), invasive mechanical ventilation support (27.0% vs. 22.3%; p=0.074) or mortality (18.9% vs. 18.0%; p=0.682). Conclusion COVID-19 patients treated with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine had a longer hospital length of stay, when compared to matched controls. Intensive care unit admission, invasive mechanical ventilation, dialysis and in-hospital mortality were similar.

Resumo Fundamento Apesar da ausência de evidência mostrando benefícios da hidroxicloroquina e da cloroquina combinadas ou não à azitromicina no tratamento da covid-19, esses medicamentos têm sido amplamente prescritos no Brasil. Objetivos Avaliar desfechos, incluindo moralidade hospitalar, alterações eletrocardiográficas, tempo de internação, admissão na unidade de terapia intensiva, e necessidade de diálise e de ventilação mecânica em pacientes hospitalizados com covid-19 que receberam cloroquina ou hidroxicloroquina, e comparar os desfechos entre aqueles pacientes e seus controles pareados. Métodos Estudo multicêntrico retrospectivo do tipo coorte que incluiu pacientes com diagnóstico laboratorial de covid-19 de 37 hospitais no Brasil de março a setembro de 2020. Escore de propensão foi usado para selecionar controles pareados quanto a idade, sexo, comorbidades cardiovasculares, e uso de corticosteroides durante a internação. Um valor de p<0,05 foi considerado estatisticamente significativo. Resultados Dos 7850 pacientes com covid-19, 673 (8,6%) receberam hidroxicloroquina e 67 (0,9%) cloroquina. A idade mediana no grupo de estudo foi 60 (46-71) anos e 59,1% eram mulheres. Durante a internação, 3,2% dos pacientes apresentaram efeitos adversos e 2,2% necessitaram de interromper o tratamento. Alterações eletrocardiográficas foram mais prevalentes no grupo hidroxicloroquina/cloroquina (13,2% vs. 8,2%, p=0,01), e o prolongamento do intervalo QT corrigido foi a principal diferença (3,6% vs. 0,4%, p<0,001). O tempo mediano de internação hospitalar foi maior no grupo usando CQ/HCQ em relação aos controles (9,0 [5,0-18,0] vs. 8,0 [4,0-14,0] dias). Não houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos quanto a admissão na unidade de terapia intensiva (35,1% vs. 32,0%; p=0,282), ventilação mecânica invasiva (27,0% vs. 22,3%; p=0,074) ou mortalidade (18,9% vs. 18,0%; p=0,682). Conclusão Pacientes com covid-19 tratados com cloroquina ou hidroxicloroquina apresentaram maior tempo de internação hospitalar, em comparação aos controles. Não houve diferença em relação a admissão em unidade de terapia intensiva, necessidade de ventilação mecânica e mortalidade hospitalar.

Resumo Fundamento A formação de células espumosas ocorre devido ao aumento em lipoproteína plasmática de baixa densidade (LDL) e desregulação da inflamação, sendo importante para o desenvolvimento da aterosclerose. Objetivo Avaliar o perfil do fator de necrose tumoral alfa (TNF-α) e da interleucina-6 (IL-6) no método de formação da célula espumosa existente, otimizando esse protocolo. Métodos A LDL foi isolada, oxidada e marcada com sonda de isotiocianato de fluoresceína (FITC). As células espumosas foram geradas de célula derivada de monócitos humanos THP-1 e incubadas na ausência (controle) ou presença de FITC-ox-LDL (10, 50, 100, 150 ou 200 μg/mL), por 12, 24, 48 ou 72 horas. A FITC-ox-LDL na célula foi quantificada por microscopia. O ensaio de imunoabsorção enzimática foi avaliado para quantificar a IL-6 e o TNF-α, com um p <0,05 considerado significativo. Resultados Todas as concentrações de FITC-ox-LDL testadas apresentaram fluorescência mais alta em comparação com o controle, demonstrando maior acúmulo de lipoproteínas nas células. Quanto mais alta a concentração de FITC-ox-LDL, maior a produção de TNF-α e IL-6. A produção de IL-6 pelas células espumosas foi detectada até o valor de 150 µg/mL da LDL máxima de estímulo. Concentrações acima de 50 μg/mL de LDL estimularam maior liberação de TNF-α comparado ao controle. Conclusões Nosso modelo contribui para o entendimento da liberação de IL-6 e TNF-α em resposta a várias concentrações de ox-LDL usando o método otimizado para a formação de células espumosas.

Abstract Background The formation of foam cells occurs due to the increase in low-density plasma lipoprotein (LDL) and dysregulation of inflammation, which is important for the development of atherosclerosis. Objective To evaluate the profile of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the existing foam cell formation method, optimizing this protocol. Methods The LDL was isolated, oxidized, and labeled with a Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) probe. Foam cells were generated from THP-1 human monocyte-derived cells and incubated in the absence (control) or presence of FITC-ox-LDL (10, 50, 100, 150, or 200 μg/mL), for 12, 24, 48, or 72 hours. The accumulated FITC-ox-LDL in the cell was quantified by microscopy. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was evaluated to quantify the IL-6 and TNF-α, with p < 0.05 considered significant. Results All the FITC-ox-LDL concentrations tested showed a higher fluorescence when compared to the control, showing a greater accumulation of lipoprotein in cells. The higher the concentration of FITC-ox-LDL, the greater the production of TNF-α and IL-6. The production of IL-6 by foam cells was detected up to the value of 150 µg/mL of the maximum stimulus for LDL. Concentrations above 50 μg/mL LDL stimulated greater release of TNF-α compared to control. Conclusions Our model contributes to the understanding of the release of IL-6 and TNF-α in response to different concentrations of ox-LDL, using an optimized method for the formation of foam cells.

ABSTRACT Post-Chikungunya chronic arthralgia (PCCA) may lead to musculoskeletal repercussions and functional loss. The objective was to assess the upper limb physical disability and symptoms during daily, work, and leisure activities of women presenting PCCA compared to healthy controls (HC). This was a cross-sectional study conducted with 52 women. The participants were divided into PCCA (37) and HC (15) groups. Handgrip strength, range of motion, level of pain (numerical rating scale), and participants’ physical disability and symptoms (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire - DASH) were evaluated. Differences between groups were evaluated using the Students t-test and Pearson’s correlations. The chi-square test was applied for categorical variables. The significance was set at α=0.05. The disease duration was 19.5±13.1 months. We found no differences between groups for peak force (PCAA:23.6±7.4kgf; HC: 24.5±6.2kgf; p=0.676). The results showed a significant difference between groups regarding range of motion (PCCA: 63.5±17.3o; HC: 77.2±9.6o), level of hand pain (PCCA: 5.8±2.2; HC: 0.4±1.5), and upper limbs functional levels (PCCA: 44.5±17.4; HC: 16.2±20.5). Participants related severe difficulty or inability to perform tasks such as opening a jar (78.4%), placing objects above head height (48.7%), doing heavy household chores (56.8%), and gardening (51.4%). Impairment in the upper limb physical function in daily, work, and leisure activities shows the higher prevalence in the long-term.

RESUMEN La artralgia crónica poschikunguña (ACPC) puede tener como efecto repercusiones musculoesqueléticas y pérdida funcional. En este sentido, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la discapacidad física y los síntomas de miembros superiores de mujeres con ACPC durante las actividades diarias, laborales y de ocio en comparación con controles sanos (CS). Por ello, se realizó un estudio transversal con 52 mujeres. Las participantes se dividieron en los grupos ACPC (37) y CS (15). La fuerza de agarre, el rango de movimiento (ROM), el nivel de dolor (escala numérica de dolor), la discapacidad física y los síntomas se evaluaron mediante el Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (Dash). Las diferencias entre los grupos se evaluaron con la aplicación de la prueba t de Student y las correlaciones de Pearson. Se utilizó la prueba de chi-cuadrado para las variables categóricas y se estableció como nivel de significación α=0,05. Se encontró que la duración de la ACPC fue de 19,5±13,1 meses. No hubo diferencia entre los grupos para la fuerza máxima (ACPC: 23,6±7,4kgf; CS: 24,5±6,2kgf; p=0,676). Los resultados mostraron una diferencia significativa entre los grupos respecto al ROM (ACPC: 63,5±17,3o; CS: 77,2±9,6o), el nivel de dolor en la mano (ACPC: 5,8±2,2; CS: 0,4±1,5) y los niveles funcionales de miembros superiores (ACPC: 44,5±17,4; CS: 16,2±20,5). Las participantes informaron una extrema dificultad o incapacidad para realizar tareas como abrir un frasco (78,4%), poner objetos en un lugar más alto (48,7%), realizar actividades domésticas pesadas (56,8%) y actividades de jardinería (51,4%). Se concluyó que la función física de los miembros superiores durante las actividades diarias, laborales y de ocio constituye el mayor compromiso a largo plazo.

RESUMO A artralgia crônica pós-Chikungunya (ACPC) pode gerar repercussões musculoesqueléticas e perda funcional. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a incapacidade física e os sintomas de membros superiores de mulheres com ACPC durante atividades diárias, laborais e de lazer comparadas aos controles saudáveis (CS). Para tanto, realizou-se um estudo transversal conduzido com 52 mulheres. As participantes foram divididas entre os grupos com ACPC (37) e CS (15). Foram avaliados força de preensão, amplitude de movimento (ADM), nível de dor (escala numérica de dor) e incapacidade física e sintomas por meio do Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (Dash). Diferenças entre os grupos foram avaliadas pelo teste t de Student e correlações de Pearson. O teste qui-quadrado foi utilizado para variáveis categóricas e α=0,05 foi estabelecido como nível de significância. Verificou-se que a duração da ACPC foi de 19,5±13,1 meses. Não houve diferença entre os grupos para a força pico (ACPC: 23,6±7,4kgf; CS: 24,5±6,2kgf; p=0,676). Os resultados demonstraram diferença significativa entre os grupos em termos de ADM (ACPC: 63,5±17,3o; CS: 77,2±9,6o), nível de dor nas mãos (ACPC: 5,8±2,2; CS: 0,4±1,5) e níveis funcionais dos membros superiores (ACPC: 44,5±17,4; CS: 16,2±20,5). As participantes relataram extrema dificuldade ou incapacidade para realizar tarefas como abrir um pote (78,4%), colocar objetos em um local acima da cabeça (48,7%), realizar atividades domésticas pesadas (56,8%) e atividades de jardinagem (51,4%). Conclui-se que a função física dos membros superiores durante as atividades diárias, laborais e de lazer constitui o maior comprometimento apresentado a longo prazo.

Abstract Background The long incubation periods of cardiovascular diseases offer opportunities for controlling risk factors. In addition, preventive interventions in childhood are more likely to succeed because lifestyle habits become ingrained as they are repeated. Objective To investigate the effects of recreational physical activities, in combination or not with a qualitative nutritional counseling, in cardiometabolic risk factors of students with dyslipidemia and abdominal obesity. Methods Students (8-14 years old) were randomly divided into three groups (n=23 each): i ) Control; ii ) PANC, students undergoing Physical Activity and Nutritional Counseling, and iii ) PA, students submitted to Physical Activity, only. Blood samples (12-h fasting) were collected for biochemical analysis and anthropometric markers were also assessed. Two-Way RM-ANOVA and Holm-Sidak’s test, and Friedman ANOVA on Ranks and Dunn’s test were applied. P ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. Effect sizes were evaluated by Hedges’ g and Cliff’s δ for normal and non-Gaussian data, respectively. Results Compared to the control group and to baseline values, both interventions caused significant average reductions in total cholesterol (11%; p <0.001), LDL-c (19%; p=0.002), and non-HDL-c (19%; p=0.003). Furthermore, students in the PANC group also experienced a significant decrease in body fat compared to baseline (p=0.005) and to control (5.2%; g=0.541). Conclusions The proposed strategies were effective to reduce cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents. The low cost of these interventions allows the implementation of health care programs in schools to improve the students’ quality of life.

Abstract This study evaluated the impact of processing, packages (amber and transparent glass jars), and storage time on the stability of the bioactive compounds (total phenolic compounds and vitamin C), and antioxidant activity of mangaba jelly. Jelly processing, significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity. The storage time, significantly (p < 0.05) influenced all the variables studied in this work, although they were not affected by packages. A significant decrease of the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity was observed during the jelly storage. HPLC-DAD/UV-Vis analyses allowed to identify 10 phenolic compounds, including flavonoids and non-flavonoids, and among these, quercetin and catechin were the major compounds. After processing, all these compounds decreased significantly (p < 0.05), except for the gallic acid and the p-coumaric acid, which presented an increasing tendency. During jelly storage, only gallic acid, caffeic acid, catechin, and rutin were affected. Despite the reduction in the antioxidant activity and bioactive compounds studied, mangaba jelly retained good levels of them and may be considered a potential novel functional food.

Abstract Recently, latex (NRL) and natural rubber (NR) from Hevea brasiliensis have emerged as promising biomaterials from renewable sources for biomedical applications. Although some attempts at commercial applications have been made, there is a need to comprehensively document the state-of-the-art of these biopolymers for biomedical applications and regenerative medicine. Here we present the recent advances in the development of NRL and NR as biomedical materials with potential properties including biocompatibility and biodegradability. Due to the angiogenic properties of NRL and NR, well-defined functional materials can be used for drug delivery systems (oral/transdermal), scaffolds for skin and bone regeneration, and dressings for wound healing. The incorporation of drugs, nanoparticles, cells, and others into NRL and NR polymer chains offers a wide range of applications such as dressings with antimicrobial activity and sustained release systems. Concluding remarks on the growth of these biomaterials for biomedical applications and regenerative medicine were discussed.

Abstract As the pandemic progressed, the incidence of viruses among children also increased. This study investigates the presence of oral lesions in hospitalized children by analyzing data collected from medical records of infants seen at the pediatric Infectious disease unit at the General Hospital of the University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil, from March to August 2020. This study includes children aged 0 to 12 years diagnosed with severe symptoms of COVID-19. The data describe the frequencies and percentages of categorical variables, expressed as mean, median, and standard deviation. The chi-square test evaluated the association of oral manifestations according to the presence of comorbidities. Of 89 children, 20.2% had oral manifestations, and mucositis was the most prevalent lesion (12.4%). Of the 18 children with oral manifestations, 12 did not present comorbidities, but 7.9% had multisystem inflammatory syndrome and 5.6% had Kawasaki disease. Results show that children with oral lesions had longer hospital stays. These findings indicate the need for further studies to clarify the relationship between the oral manifestations of COVID-19 in pediatric patients for screening of the virus by dentists.

Abstract Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe disease with no cure caused by a genetic abnormality, promoting progressive muscle degeneration. Corticosteroids are used drugs in treatment associated with adverse effects. The extract of Miconia ferruginata (Melastomataceae) (MF) has demonstrated potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential in vitro. This study used a DMD model (mdx) to determine the toxic dose of this plant and found a possible non-toxic dose with therapeutic effects. The mdx groups received an intraperitoneal injection of 0 (control group), 50, 100, 200, 300, and 2000 mg kg-1 of the aqueous leaf extract following a single-dose acute toxicity protocol and were observed for 14 days. The range of toxicity of the extract and LD50 were determined. Histopathological analysis, the quantification of fibrosis, and immunohistochemical analysis of the tissues were performed. The results demonstrated that 2000 mg kg-1 was highly toxic, inducing histopathological changes in the tissues evaluated, with 100% mortality in 48 hours. The other doses caused no behavioral changes or signs of toxicity. The MF extract led reduction in histopathological changes, fibrosis, and inflammation, a reduction in HSP70 and an increase in MCL-1 proteins. Doses of 50-200 mg kg-1 demonstrated regenerative tissue and anti-inflammatory potential.

Resumo Objetivo: Estabelecer valores de referência ultrassonográficos de volumes tireoidianos em crianças de até três anos de idade, por ser exame essencial no diagnóstico de doença tireoidiana infantil. Materiais e Métodos: Trata-se de estudo prospectivo conduzido em cidade do sudeste brasileiro suficiente em iodo. Participaram 100 crianças saudáveis, submetidas a exame clinicoantropométrico e ultrassonografia cervical seguindo protocolos convencionais. Características como ecotextura e volumes dos lobos e da tireoide total foram obtidos. Segundo a idade, as crianças foram distribuídas em cinco grupos: < 2 meses; 2-12 meses; 12-18 meses; 18-24 meses; e 24-36 meses. Resultados: No grupo < 2 meses os volumes tireoidianos foram menores (p < 0,001) do que nos demais (0,4 mL; 0,18-0,70 mL). Além dessa idade, o volume total médio foi 1,0 mL (0,30-2,0 mL) e não diferiu entre os grupos. Não foram observadas diferenças entre lobos ou relacionadas a gênero. Houve correlação (r = 0,347; p = 0,001) entre índice de massa corporal e volume total. Conclusão: As dimensões tireoidianas foram menores até dois meses (0,35 ± 0,16 mL), e a partir dessa idade os mesmos valores de referência podem ser usados até 36 meses (0,85 ± 0,42 mL). Tais dados podem orientar a investigação diagnóstica, especialmente no hipotireoidismo congênito.

Abstract Objective: To establish ultrasound reference values for thyroid volumes in children up to 3 years of age, given that ultrasound of the thyroid is an essential examination in the diagnosis of childhood thyroid disease. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study conducted in an iodine-sufficient city in southeastern Brazil. A total of 100 healthy children underwent clinical evaluation, anthropometric examination, and cervical ultrasound in accordance with conventional protocols. We evaluated characteristics such as echotexture, thyroid lobe volume, and total thyroid volume. The children were divided into five groups, by age: < 2 months; 2-12 months; 12-18 months; 18-24 months; and 24-36 months. Results: The mean thyroid volume was lower in the < 2 month age group than in the other groups (0.4 mL vs. 0.18-0.70 mL; p < 0.001). For the subjects between 2 and 36 months of age, the mean volume was 1.0 mL (range, 0.30-2.0 mL). No other significant differences were observed between groups, thyroid lobes, or gender. However, body mass index correlated significantly with total thyroid volume (r = 0.347; p = 0.001). Conclusion: The mean thyroid dimensions were smallest in the < 2 month age group (0.35 ± 0.16 mL). For the subjects between 2 and 36 months of age, a reference value of 0.85 ± 0.42 mL can be used. Our data could guide the diagnostic investigation of thyroid disease, especially congenital hypothyroidism, in childhood.

RESUMO: Busca-se, neste texto, analisar como se configurava o trabalho pedagógico em escolas do campo do estado de Mato Grosso, nas décadas de 1980 e 1990. O estudo pauta-se na abordagem crítico-dialética e na pesquisa qualitativa, tendo como instrumento a entrevista semiestruturada, realizada com 23 professores. Os resultados apontam que as escolas não tinham uma proposta pedagógica definida; o trabalho pedagógico baseava-se nas orientações das secretarias de educação e nas experiências escolares dos professores; embora a educação no período em questão estivesse centrada nos aspectos instrucionais, alguns professores tentavam realizar um ensino humanizado, pautado na colaboração com alunos e pais/mães. A partir dos anos de 1990, o trabalho pedagógico passa a ocorrer de forma mais sistematizada e crítica, buscando incorporar a pesquisa como princípio pedagógico e a realidade do campo como laboratório vivo e fator de promoção da relação teoria-prática e da aprendizagem. Conclui-se que o trabalho pedagógico das escolas do campo, no período aqui recortado, é marcado por enormes desafios em termos da própria existência dessas escolas, da garantia de acesso dos trabalhadores rurais à educação escolar e da precariedade das condições de trabalho - estrutura física, recursos didáticos e formação/reconhecimento profissional. O processo de democratização do Brasil abre caminhos para se pensar em políticas públicas para a educação do campo, o que se intensificará no fim dos anos de 1990 e início dos anos 2000.

ABSTRACT3: This article seeks to analyze how the pedagogical work in rural school of the state of Mato Grosso was configured in the 1980s and 1990s. This study is based on the critical-dialectical approach and the qualitative research, having as instrument the semi-structured interview with 23 teachers. The results indicate that the schools did not have a defined pedagogical proposal. The pedagogical work was based on the orientations of the departments of education and on the teachers’ school experiences; although education in the period was focused on instructional aspects, some teachers tried to perform humanized teaching based on collaboration with students and parents. From the 1990s, pedagogical work started to take place in a more systematic and critical way, seeking to incorporate research as a pedagogical principle and the reality of the rural world as a living laboratory and as factor for the promotion of the theory-practice relationship and learning. We conclude that the pedagogical work of the rural school, during this period, is marked by enormous challenges in terms of the very existence of these schools, the guarantee of rural workers’ access to school education and the precarious working conditions - physical structure, teaching resources and professional recognition and training. Brazil’s democratization process opens the way to think public policies for rural education, which grew in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

RESÚMEN: Este artículo busca analizar cómo se configuró el trabajo pedagógico en las escuelas rurales del estado de Mato Grosso en las décadas de 1980 y 1990. El estudio se basa en el enfoque crítico-dialéctico y la investigación cualitativa, teniendo como instrumento la entrevista semiestructurada, realizada a 23 docentes. Los resultados indican que las escuelas no tenían una propuesta pedagógica definida; el trabajo pedagógico se basaba en las orientaciones de las secretarías de educación y en las experiencias escolares de los docentes; aunque la educación en el período en cuestión se centró en aspectos de instrucción, algunos maestros trataron de llevar a cabo una enseñanza humanizada, cimentada en la colaboración con estudiantes y padres de familia. A partir de la década de 1990, el trabajo pedagógico se realizó de una manera más sistemática y crítica, buscando incorporar la investigación como un principio pedagógico y la realidad del campo como laboratorio vivo y factor de promoción de la relación teoría-práctica con el aprendizaje. Se concluye que el trabajo pedagógico de las escuelas rurales durante este lapso de tiempo está marcado por enormes desafíos para la existencia misma de estas escuelas, la falta de garantía para el acceso de los trabajadores rurales a la educación escolar, precarias condiciones de trabajo, estructuras físicas deficientes, escasos recursos didácticos, al igual que formación y reconocimiento profesional. El proceso de democratización del Brasil abre caminos para pensar políticas públicas para la educación en contextos rurales, lo que se intensificará a finales de la década de 1990 y principios de la década de 2000.

RESUMO Objetivo Correlacionar a lombalgia crônica com a função sexual feminina. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo transversal. Foram selecionadas 32 mulheres com faixa etária entre 18 e 44 anos, com Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) entre 18,5 kg/m2 e 29,9 kg/m2, diagnóstico médico de lombalgia crônica e sexualmente ativas nos últimos seis meses. As pacientes foram submetidas a uma única avaliação fisioterapêutica e responderam a dois instrumentos: Questionário de Incapacidade Roland-Morris e Quociente Sexual – versão feminina (QS-F). Para a avaliação do impacto da lombalgia crônica na função sexual foi utilizada a correlação de Pearson. Resultados A média de idade foi de 30,31 anos (± 7,10) e a do IMC foi de 24,54 Kg/m2 (± 3,06). A média da pontuação do Questionário de Incapacidade Roland-Morris foi de 5,2 (± 3,28), representando que as pacientes não tinham incapacidade significante. A pontuação do QS-F foi de 60,37 (± 14,48), classificada como “desfavorável a regular” quanto à função sexual feminina. O teste de correlação demonstrou que houve baixa correlação entre a lombalgia crônica e a função sexual feminina (r = 0,027). Conclusões Houve baixa correlação entre a lombalgia crônica e a função sexual feminina na população estudada, porém a correlação moderada entre o domínio “conforto” e o escore do Questionário de Incapacidade Roland-Morris foi significativa. ABSTRACT Objective To correlate chronic low back pain with female sexual function. Methods This is a cross-sectional study. Thirty-two women aged between 18 and 44 years old, with body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 kg/m2 and 29.9 kg/m2, with a medical diagnosis of chronic low back pain and sexually active in the last six months were selected. The patients underwent a physical therapy evaluation and responded to two questionnaires: the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire and the Female Sexual Quotient (QS-F). Pearson’s correlation test was used to assess the impact of chronic low back pain on sexual activity. Results The mean age was 30.31 years old (±.7.10) and the mean BMI was 24.54 Kg/m2 (±3.06). The mean Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire score was 5.2 ( ± 3.28), indicating that the patients did not have significant disability. The mean QS-F score was 60.37 (±14.48), classified as “unfavorable to normal”. The correlation test showed a low correlation between chronic low back pain and female sexual function (r = 0.027). Conclusion There was a low correlation between chronic low back pain and female sexual function in the study population, but the moderate correlation between the “comfort” domain and the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire score was significant. Se seleccionaron 32 mujeres con edades entre 18 y 44 años, con Índice de Masa Corporal (IMC) entre 18,5 kg/m2 y 29,9 kg/m2, diagnóstico médico de lumbalgia crónica y sexualmente activas en los últimos seis meses. Las pacientes fueron sometidas a una única evaluación fisioterapéutica y respondieron a dos instrumentos: Cuestionario de Discapacidad Roland-Morris y por el Cociente Sexual - versión femenina (QS-F). Para la evaluación del impacto de la lumbalgia crónica en la función sexual se utilizó la correlación de Pearson. Resultados El promedio de edad fue de 30,31 años (± 7,10) y la del IMC fue de 24,54 kg/m2 (± 3,06). El promedio de la puntuación del Cuestionario de Discapacidad Roland-Morris fue de 5,2 (± 3,28), representando que las pacientes no tenían incapacidad significativa. La puntuación del QS-F fue de 60,37 (± 14,48), clasificada como “desfavorable a regular” en cuanto a la función sexual femenina. El test de correlación demostró que hubo baja correlación entre la lumbalgia crónica y la función sexual femenina (r = 0,027). Conclusiones Hubo baja correlación entre la lumbalgia crónica y la función sexual femenina en la población estudiada, sin embargo la correlación moderada entre el dominio “comodidad” y el score del Cuestionario de Discapacidad Roland-Morris fue significativa.
