Abstract Oceanographic features influence the early stages of fish to a high degree. We investigated the influence of continental shelf-slope gradient on the ichthyoplankton composition and distribution off Northeastern Brazil. Two oceanographic campaigns were performed during July-August 2010 and 2012. The samplings were performed along three transects composed by three stations, covering the continental shelf and slope areas. Abiotic data were obtained by an ADCP and a CTD. The ichthyoplankton was sampled through diurnal and nocturnal hauls using a 500-µm bongo net from 200 m to the surface. A total of 1634 larvae and 4023 eggs, representing 91 genera and 76 species, were collected. Higher concentrations of fish eggs were found on the continental shelf, probably because of the North Brazil Undercurrent flux. Higher concentrations of larvae were found at night and could be associated with net avoidance or natural variation. Neritic, oceanic and transition groups of species association were determined. Larvae of neritic, demersal and pelagic fishes prevailed on the continental shelf, while larvae of oceanic, mesopelagic and bathypelagic fishes on the continental slope. Melanostomiidae, Scorpaena sp., Lestidium atlanticum, Lampadena sp. and Diaphus sp. were identified as indicators of the continental slope.

Abstract This study investigated the large-scale spatial and temporal variability of larval fish assemblages in the west tropical Atlantic Ocean. The sampling was performed during four expeditions. Identification resulted in 100 taxa (64 families, 19 orders and 17 suborders). During the four periods, 80% of the total larvae taken represented eight characteristics families (Scombridae, Carangidae, Paralepididae, Bothidae, Gonostomatidae, Scaridae, Gobiidae and Myctophidae). Fish larvae showed a rather heterogeneous distribution with density at each station ranging from 0.5 to 2000 larvae per 100m3. A general trend was observed, lower densities at oceanic area and higher densities in the seamounts and islands. A gradient in temperature, salinity, phytoplankton biomass, zooplankton biomass and station depth was strongly correlated with changes in ichthyoplankton structure. Myctophidae, and Paralepididae presented increased abundance at high salinities and temperatures. Bothidae and Gobiidae were more abundant at higher phytoplankton biomass and zooplankton biomass. Scaridae, Scombridae and Gonostomatidae had higher abundances at deep offshore stations. Different events might be responsible for the formation, maintenance and breakdown of fish larvae assemblage in the tropical oceanic area of Brazil. The results suggested that the oceanographic variables (temperature, salinity, phytoplankton biomass, zooplankton biomass and station depth) played an important role on the distribution patterns of ichthyoplankton.

Resumo Dados coletados em cruzeiro de larga escala em torno dos montes submarinos e ilhas ao largo do Nordeste do Brasil forneceram informações sobre os anfípodes hyperiideos. Foram identificadas 36 espécies, a maioria pertencente à infraordem Physocephala, representando 21 gêneros e 13 famílias. Treze espécies, Vibilia australis, L. latissimus, L. macrophthalmus, L. schizogeneios, Phronima atlantica, Phrosina semilunata, Primno brevidens, Eupronoe minuta, Oxycephalus clause, Rhabdosoma whitei, Amphithyrus bispinosus, Leptocotis tenuirostris e Tetrathyrus forcipatus são registros novos para a região Nordeste brasileira. A distribuição espacial dos anfípodes hyperiideos foi altamente irregular. Verificou-se que cada área ao redor dos montes submarinos e ilhas ao longo da área estudada apresentaram diferentes características oceanográficas e puderam ser caracterizadas por um grupo definido de espécies mais abundantes.

Abstract Data collected on large-scale surveys around the seamounts and islands off northeastern Brazil provide information on the hyperiid amphipod populations. Thirty-six species were identified. Most of the species belong to the Infraorder Physocephalata, representing 21 genera and 13 families. Thirteen species (Vibilia australis, L. latissimus, L. macrophthalmus, L. schizogeneios, Phronima atlantica, Phrosina semilunata, Primno brevidens, Eupronoe minuta, Oxycephalus clause, Rhabdosoma whitei, Amphithyrus bispinosus, Leptocotis tenuirostris and Tetrathyrus forcipatus) have not previously been recorded in this region. The spatial distribution of the hyperiid amphipods was very patchy. Each area of these amounts and islands off northeastern Brazil has different oceanographic features and can be characterised by a clearly defined group of most abundant species.

RESUMO Neste trabalho analisamos a composição, distribuição e abundância das larvas Pleuronectiformes em relação aos fatores abióticos (temperatura e salinidade) e fatores bióticos (biomassa de fitoplâncton e zooplâncton) no Oceano Atlântico equatorial. A hipótese investigada foi que o padrão de composição e distribuição das espécies de larvas Pleuronectiformes apresenta diferenças entre as áreas estudadas de acordo com a hidrografia analisada. O ictioplâncton foi coletado nos Períodos: 1 (agosto - outubro 1995), 2 (janeiro - abril 1997), 3 (abril - julho 1998) e 4 (setembro - dezembro 2000), no Oceano Atlântico equatorial. Foram analisadas 562 amostras coletadas com rede Bongo (500 μm) que continham 719 larvas de Pleuronectiformes pertencentes a 3 famílias: Bothidae (Bothus ocellatus e Engyophrys senta), Paralichthyidae (Syacium papillosum, Citharichthys spilopterus e Citharichthys sp.) e Cynoglossidae (Symphurus sp.). As larvas de Pleuronectiformes representaram 4% do total de larvas de peixes e ocorreram em 37% das estações oceanográficas. B. ocellatus foi a espécie mais abundante (77%), com maior valor observado no Período 3 (77%) e menor no Período 1 (57%). S. papillosum foi a segunda espécie com maiores valores de abundância relativa (14%), registrados nos Períodos 1 e 4. Os resultados demonstraram que os fatores ambientais tendem a influenciar a distribuição e abundância de larvas de Pleuronectifomes, conduzindo as diferentes espécies a um período e local mais favorável para desova e crescimento. B. ocellatus esteve relacionada com águas mais quentes e com maior concentração de biomassa fitoplanctônica e zooplanctônica, enquanto S. papillosum ocorreu em águas salinas e de menores temperaturas.

ABSTRACT In this study, we analyzed the composition, distribution and abundance of Pleuronectiform larvae in relation to abiotic factors (temperature and salinity) and biotic factors (phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic biomass) in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The working hypothesis was that the composition and distribution pattern of Pleuronectiform larvae species present differences between the areas studied according to the hydrographical environment/factors analyzed. Ichthyoplankton was collected during Period: 1 (August - October 1995), 2 (January - April 1997), 3 (April - July 1998) and 4 (September - December 2000), in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. We examined 562 Bongo-net (500 μm) samples that contained 719 Pleuronectiform larvae belonging to three families: Bothidae (Bothus ocellatus and Engyophrys senta), Paralichthyidae (Syacium papillosum, Citharichthys spilopterus and Citharichthys sp.) and Cynoglossidae (Symphurus sp.). The Pleuronectiform larvae accounted for 4% of total fish larvae and occurred at 37% of the oceanographic stations. B. ocellatus was the species with the highest relative abundance (70%), the greatest value occurring during Period 3 (77%), whereas the lowest relative abundance (57%) was recorded in Period 1. S. papillosum was the species presenting the second highest relative abundance (14%), with higher values during periods 1 and 4. The results demonstrated that environmental factors influence the distribution and abundance of Pleuronectiform larvae so that each species occurs in a more favourable period and place for spawning and growth. B. ocellatus was related to warmer waters and greater phytoplanktonic and zooplanktonic biomass, while S. papillosum occurred in saltier waters and at lower temperatures.

A relação entre a distribuição espacial de chaetognatha e condições hidrográficas ao redor dos montes submarinos e ilhas oceânicas do nordeste do Brasil foram analisados a partir de 133 estações oceanográficas em janeiro-abril de 1997 e abril-julho de 1998. Foram realizados arrastos oblíquos de zooplâncton, utilizando redes Bongo de 50 cm de diâmetro com malha de 500 µm equipadas com fluxômetro para determinar o volume de água filtrado, foram realizados a uma profundidade máxima de 200m. A Água Equatorial Superficial teve uma salinidade > 36 PSU e temperatura > 20°C, ocupou o pico de 80 a 200m de profundidade. Abaixo desta massa de água estava a Água Central do Atlântico Sul com salinidade variando de 34,5-36 PSU e temperatura de 6 a 20°C. A comunidade de chaetognathas apresentou seis espécies: Pterosagitta draco, Flaccisagitta enflata, Flaccisagitta hexaptera, Pseudosagitta lyra, Serratosagitta serratodentata e Sagitta helenae. Destas espécies, F. enflata foi a mais abundante (32,05% em 1997 e 42,18% em 1998) e frequente (87,88% em 1997 e 95% em 1998) em ambos os períodos. Uma espécie mesopelagica foi identificada (P. lyra). Esta espécie foi mais abundante em 1997 (3,42%), quando a ressurgência foi mais intensa. P. lyra ocorreu em 22% das amostras em 1997. A abundância de F. enflata, uma espécie epiplanctônica, aumentou associada com uma maior estabilidade da coluna de água.

Relationship between spatial distribution of chaetognaths and hydrographic conditions around seamounts and islands off Northeastern Brazil were analyzed from 133 oceanographic stations during the months of January – April of 1997 and April – July of 1998. Oblique zooplankton tows, using 50 cm diameter Bongo nets with 500µm mesh with a flowmeter to determine the filtered volume, were carried out to a maximum of 200m depth. The Superficial Equatorial Water, which had a salinity > 36 PSU and temperature > 20°C, occupied the top 80 to 200m depth. Below this water mass was the South Atlantic Central Water with salinity ranging from 34.5 to 36 PSU and temperature from 6 to 20°C. The community of chaetognaths showed six species: Pterosagitta draco, Flaccisagitta enflata, Flaccisagitta hexaptera, Pseudosagitta lyra, Serratosagitta serratodentata, and Sagitta helenae. Of these species, F. enflata was the most abundant (32.05% in 1997 and 42.18% in 1998) and the most frequent (87.88% in 1997 and 95% in 1998) during both periods. A mesopelagic specie was identified (P. lyra). This specie was more abundant in 1997 (3.42%), when the upwelling was more intense. P. lyra occurred in 22% of the samples during 1997. The abundance of F. enflata, an epiplanktonic species, increased, associated with greater water-column stability.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a distribuição e abundância das larvas de Carangidae, foi analisada também a influência de fatores hidrológicos (temperatura e salinidade) e biológicos (biomassa fitoplanctônica e biomassa zooplanctônica), sobre a distribuição espacial e temporal dessas larvas. O ictioplâncton foi coletado durante quatro expedições: Período 1 (Agosto Outubro 1995), Período 2 (Janeiro Abril 1997), Período 3 (Abril Julho 1998) e Período 4 (Setembro Dezembro 2000)), realizadas na Zona Econômica Exclusiva do nordeste. Em um total de 313 larvas foram identificadas 6 espécies (Trachurus lathami, Decapterus punctatus, Chloroscombrus chrysurus, Selene setapinnis, Selene vomer e Elagatis bipinnulata) e o Complexo Caranx Carangoides pertencentes à família Carangidae. D. punctatus foi a espécie mais abundante neste estudo (52% do total). Sua maior abundância foi observada no Período 3 e a menor no Período 2. C. chrysurus foi a segunda espécie em abundância representando 30% do total de carangídeos. Esta espécie teve maior abundância durante o Período 2, enquanto que os Períodos 1 e 3 foram ás épocas de menor abundância. A terceira espécie em abundância foi T. lathami que correspondeu 8% do total de larvas de carangídeos, sendo o Período 4 o mais abundante. S. setapinnis, S. vomer e E. bipinnulata foram bem menos abundantes que as outras espécies analisadas, representando juntas 2% do total de larvas identificadas. Larvas do Complexo Caranx - Carangoides representaram 9% do total de carangídeos.

This work had as objective to study the distribution and abundance of the Carangidae larvae and to analyze the influence of the hydrological (temperature and salinity) and biological factors (phytoplanktonic biomass and zooplanktonic biomass), on the space and temporal distribution of the larvae. Ichthyoplankton was collected during four expeditions from the Northeast Exclusive Economic Zone. Six species (Trachurus lathami, Decapterus punctatus, Chloroscombrus chrysurus, Selene setapinnis, Selene vomer and Elagatis bipinnulata) and Caranx- Carangoides complex were identified. D. punctatus was the species most abundant (52% of the total), with higher abundance during the Period 3, while the Period 2 was the period of low abundance. C. chrysurus was the second species in abundance representing 30% of the total of carangid. This species had higher abundance during the Period 2 and the Period 1. However, in Period 3 abundance were lesser. The third species in abundance was T. lathami that corresponded 8% of the total of carangid larvae. S. setapinnis, S. vomer and E. bipinnulata were the species less abundant, representing together 2% of the total identified larvae. The larvae of Caranx- Carangoides complex represented 9% of the carangid total.

Duas amostragens de ictioplâncton foram realizadas durante Julho de 1994 e Julho de 1995, no Golfo de Cádiz, com o objetivo de descrever a composição, abundância, padrões de distribuição e variações interanuais das associações de larvas de peixes. Diferenças interanuais foram encontradas neste estudo. Em 1994 salinidades mais elevadas foram observadas nas estações da plataforma externa, enquanto que, em 1995 os valores mais elevados foram encontrados nas estações da plataforma interna. A coluna de água foi mais quente em 1994 e apresentou menor densidade de larvas de peixes. Durante 1994 Sardinella aurita e Engraulis encrasicolus foram abundantes, porém com localização espacial oposta. Em 1995, a abundância de ambas as espécies foi muito diferente, mas com padrão espacial semelhante. A análise de cluster revelou grupos bem definidos de estações e associações de larvas, primariamente relacionadas com a batimetria. A "associação costeira" ocupou as zonas menos profundas; suas espécies características, vinculadas a sistemas estuarinos, compreenderam principalmente Engraulis encrassicolus e Gobiidae. A "associação de plataforma" esteve formada por larvas cujos adultos habitam a plataforma continental e desovam nesta mesma zona, tais como: Sardinella aurita e Trachurus spp. Variações interanuais na composição e extensão dos subgrupos podem ser atribuídas aos principais padrões de circulação, vazão de águas continentais e as estratégias de desova dos peixes.

Two ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted during July 1994 and July 1995 in the Gulf of Cádiz with the aim of describing composition, abundance, distribution patterns and interannual variations of larval fish assemblages. Interannual differences were found in this study. In 1994, higher salinities were observed at external sites, though in 1995, higher values were observed at intermediate sites. The upper water column was warmer in 1994 and had less fish larvae density. During 1994, Sardinella aurita and Engraulis encrasicolus were abundant but spatial location was opposite. In 1995, abundance of both species was very different, but with similar spatial pattern. Cluster analysis revealed well-defined groups of stations and assemblages of larvae, primarily related to bathymetry. The "inshore assemblage" occupied the shallow coast area; its characteristics species being closely related to the estuarine system, mainly comprising Engraulis encrasicolus and Gobiidae. The "shelf assemblage" occupied the continental shelf and its characteristics species consisted of larvae whose adults inhabited the shelf province and spawn in the same zone, like Sardinella aurita and Trachurus spp. Interannual variations in composition and extension of the subgroups could be attributed to the main circulation patterns, continental water discharge and spawning strategies of fishes.
