Resumo Os manguezais se configuram em um dos ecossistemas mais produtivos do planeta, entretanto eles vêm sofrendo progressivas alterações ambientais, devido às pressões antrópicas. Informações sobre o comportamento fenológico podem ser utilizadas como instrumento na construção de projetos de conservação de recursos naturais. O presente estudo foi realizado em quatro áreas estuarinas em Acaraú, Ceará, objetivando analisar o comportamento fenológico dos componentes reprodutivos de três espécies de mangue em diferentes áreas sujeitas a diferentes tipos de impactos ambientais (resíduos sólidos, desmatamento e efluentes da carcinicultura) e uma área de baixo impacto no período de um ano. A fim de se caracterizar os padrões fenológicos foi realizada observação direta, registrando-se a presença e a intensidade da floração e frutificação. Dois métodos de análise foram aplicados para entender os padrões de floração e frutificação: percentual de intensidade de Fournier e o índice de atividade. As florações de Avicennia spp. e Rhizophora mangle L, em condições naturais, ocorrem o ano todo, e nas áreas impactadas mostraram padrões irregulares. Quanto à frutificação, Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C. F. Gaertn foi a espécie que apresentou os mais altos percentuais para os dois índices fenológicos analisados. A pluviosidade e a salinidade parecem exercer maior força seletiva quando as espécies estão sujeitas a algum tipo de impacto antrópico. A análise comparativa dos diferentes métodos de avaliação fenológicos realizados neste estudo indicou que estes fornecem dados distintos e complementares sobre o comportamento reprodutivo vegetal e de como os impactos a que estes ambientes estão sujeitos pode estar interferindo negativamente sobre a flora deste ecossistema.

Abstract Mangroves are one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet however they have undergone progressive environmental changes due to anthropic pressures. Information on phenological behavior can be used as an instrument in the construction of conservation projects of natural resources. The present study was carried out in four estuarine areas in Acaraú, Ceará, Brazil, with the aim of analyzing of phenological behavior regarding reproductive components of three mangrove species in different areas subject to different environmental impacts (solid waste, deforestation and shrimp farm effluent) and a low impacted area, during a period of one year. patterns of flowering and fruiting: Fournier Index (percentage of intensity) and the index of activity. The flowering of Avicennia spp. and Rhizophora mangle, under natural conditions, occurred all year round, and it showed irregular patterns. Regarding fruiting, Laguncularia racemosa was the species that presented the highest values for the two phenological indices analyzed. Rainfall and salinity seemed to exert a more selective force when species were subjected to an anthropic impact. The comparative analysis of the different phenological evaluation methods carried out in this study indicated that they provide different and complementary data about the reproductive behavior of the plant and how the impacts to which these environments are subjected may be negatively interfering with the flora of this ecosystem.

RESUMO Os fatores ambientais, principalmente a luminosidade, temperatura e as condições edáficas são de grande importância para o estabelecimento da comunidade vegetal. Em áreas degradadas por desmatamento, esses fatores podem passar por alterações de grande magnitude, podendo a fetar a recolonização das populações típicas da área alterada. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desenvolvimento de plântulas de espécies pioneiras de mangue sob diferentes níveis de sombreamento, em substrato de solo degradado pelo desmatamento, visando o efeito do desmatamento na recolonização das plântulas de mangue e gerar subsídios para a recuperação de áreas desmatadas e produção de mudas. O estudo foi realizado no Instituto Federal do Ceará, localizado no Município de Acaraú no Estado do Ceará, Brasil. Para o experimento foram escolhidas as espécies Avicennia schaueriana Stapf and Leechm. ex Moldenke (1939) e Laguncularia racemosa C. F. Gaertn (1807). O substrato para produção das mudas foi coletado em área impactada por desmatamento, apresentando baixa fertilidade e de textura franco argilosa. As plântulas foram testadas a pleno sol e sob níveis de 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento. Os dados obtidos foram altura, diâmetro do coleto, anotações das condições fenológicas das plântulas, matéria fresca, matéria seca da raiz, parte aérea e a temperatura ambiente dos viveiros. Os resultados revelaram que em condições de desmatamento total da área de mangue, gerando alta luminosidade e solos degradados, a regeneração natural é comprometida, sendo essencial a intervenção humana, com sombreamento de 50% para uma boa estabilidade de plântulas.

ABSTRACT Environmental factors, especially light, temperature, and edaphic conditions are of great importance for the establishment of plant communities. In areas degraded by deforestation, these factors can vary greatly, which may affect the recolonization of the typical populations in the altered area. This study evaluated the development of seedlings of pioneer mangrove species under different levels of shading in soil substrate degraded by deforestation, aiming to assess the effect of deforestation on the recolonization of mangrove forests, which may be of help in the production of seedlings and recovery of deforested areas. The study was conducted in the municipality of Acaraú in the state of Ceará, Brazil. The species Avicennia schaueriana Stapf and Leechm. ex Moldenke (1939) and Laguncularia racemosa C. F. Gaertn (1807) were used in the study, and the substrate was collected from an area impacted by deforestation. The propagules and seedlings were exposed to full sun and 30, 50 and 70% shading. The results revealed that the treatment at full sun had the lowest germination rate of 86.66% for L. racemosa. Seedlings of both species showed a significant difference and better quality between shading treatments and full sun. The height of the seedlings showed a correlation above -0.90 with ambient temperature. L. racemosa tested in full sun had a viable seedling reduction of 50% and A. schaueriana was superior. It is concluded that the natural regeneration of a mangrove area can be compromised under the conditions of total deforestation with high sun exposure and degraded soils. Human intervention in providing 50% shading is essential for the development of seedlings and regeneration of the area impacted by deforestation.

A serapilheira representa fonte de alimentos para diversos organismos que podem contribuir diretamente para a decomposição de matéria orgânica. A presença física desses detritos vegetais pode modificar áreas do ambiente e promover a formação de microhabitats, servindo de refúgio para diversos animais contra predadores e dessecação. O gastrópode Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Ellobiidae) é comum em florestas de mangue na costa do Atlântico e se alimenta de folhas de mangue caídas. Nesse trabalho foi assumida a hipótese de que a distribuição espacial do Melampus coffeus é diretamente afetada pela deposição de serapilheira no manguezal. Objetivou-se avaliar a distribuição espacial desses gastrópodes em relação à serapilheira de mangue durante doze meses de coletas. A área de estudo foi estabelecida no médio estuário do rio Pacoti, Estado do Ceará, Brasil onde foram determinadas duas zonas de diferentes perfis topográficos. Amostras de Melampus coffeus e de serapilheira foram coletadas mensalmente. Os resultados indicaram que a presença de galhos na superfície do solo do manguezal favorece a ocupação do ambiente por indivíduos dessa espécie de molusco de menor tamanho, provavelmente porque indivíduos menores são mais suscetíveis ao ataque de predadores e à dessecação e a presença de galhos pode formar microhabitats mais seguros.

Leaf litter represents a food source to many organisms that may directly contribute to organic matter decomposition. In addition, the physical presence of these vegetal detritus contributes for the modification of some environmental areas and produce microhabitats that may act as a refuge against predators and desiccation for many animals. The pulmonate gastropod Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Ellobiidae) is a very common specie in Atlantic Coast mangrove forests and feeds on fallen mangrove leaves. It was hypothesized that the spatial distribution of Melampus coffeus is directly affected by mangrove leaf litter biomass deposition. Thus, this research aimed at evaluating the spatial distribution of these gastropods in relation to the biomass of mangrove leaf litter through a twelve-month period. The study area was established in the middle estuary of Pacoti River, state of Ceará, Brazil where two adjacent zones with different topographic profiles were determined. Samples of Melampus coffeus and leaf litter were collected monthly, throughout a year, from the mangrove ground surface. The results indicated that the presence of twigs in mangrove litter favor the occupation by smaller individuals of M. coffeus, probably because smaller individuals are more susceptible to predator attacks and desiccation than larger ones, and twigs and branches may provide a safe microhabitat.

Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) é um gastrópode pulmonado, macrodetritívoro, importante na transferência de energia em manguezais neotropicais, mas sua distribuição em diferentes escalas espaciais ainda é pouco conhecida nas regiões brasileiras. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a distribuição de M. coffeus com relação: 1) às espécies Rhizophora mangle Rhizophoraceae e Laguncularia racemosa Combretaceae; 2) à posição dos rizóforos de R. mangle e 3) à altura das árvores em diferentes manguezais. O seu comportamento ao longo do ciclo de marés também foi descrito. A densidade de M. coffeus foi similar entre R. mangle e L. racemosa, porém os maiores caramujos foram encontrados nas árvores de R. mangle. A distribuição dos caramujos encontrados no sedimento diferiu em relação aos rizóforos, com maior densidade no centro e o maior tamanho na borda da área amostral. Entretanto, não houve relação com a disponibilidade de recursos alimentares formados por folhas. A densidade também foi maior nos manguezais baixo e médio quando comparados ao alto, porém não foram encontradas diferenças de tamanho dos caramujos em mangues de alturas distintas. Observamos também que, durante a maré alta, M. coffeus sobe nas árvores mais próximas. Estes resultados podem estar relacionados principalmente com a disponibilidade de recursos e abrigos fornecidos por R. mangle. Desta forma, novos estudos sobre a distribuição de M. coffeus sob diversas condições são recomendáveis, já que as regiões de manguezais estão cada vez mais sujeitas a perturbações.

Melampus coffeus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a pulmonate, macrodetritivore gastropod, important in energy flows in neotropical mangroves, but its distribution in different spatial scales is still unknown in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the distribution of M. coffeus: 1) among the mangrove trees Rhizophora mangle Rhizophoraceae and Laguncularia racemosa Combretaceae; 2) in relation to the position of R. mangle prop roots and 3) among mangroves with different tree heights. Further, its behavior along one tidal cycle was also described. The densities of M. coffeus did not differ between R. mangle and L. racemosa, but the largest snails were found on R. mangle. The distribution of snails found on the sediment differed relative to the position of the prop roots, with the highest density in the center and largest size in the edge of the studied areas. However, this distribution was not related with the availability of food resources provided by decayed leaves. Higher densities were also recorded in intermediate and low-stature mangroves when compared with taller ones, but no differences in snail's sizes among mangroves were found. During the high tide, M. coffeus individuals climb nearby trees. These results are possibly related to the availability of resources and shelter supplied by R. mangle. Thus, studies on the distribution of M. coffeus in diverse conditions are essential, because mangroves are being intensively disturbed.
