Este trabajo tiene por objetivo la caracterización de la madera de Eucalyptus bosistoana, a través del estudio de las propiedades físicas (densidad y contracción) y mecánicas (flexión estática, dureza Janka y compresión paralela al grano). Se trabajó con 11 árboles de 42 años pertenecientes a una cortina forestal ubicada en la Estación Experimental Bernardo Rosengurtt (Bañado de Medina, Cerro Largo). Para la realización de los ensayos de densidad aparente, contracción, flexión estática y dureza Janka se siguió lo prescrito en las normas uruguayas, UNIT. Para el ensayo de compresión paralela se utilizó la norma norteamericana, ASTM. Se encontró que la densidad aparente básica de la especie es de 0,82 g cm-3 y la densidad aparente corriente es de 0,94 g cm-3. Se clasifica la madera como de alta contracción con un valor volumétrico de 17,83 %. Respecto a las propiedades mecánicas con un contenido de humedad promedio de 15 %, la madera es de gran resistencia con valores de 66,19 MPa para la compresión paralela al grano y de 18738 MPa y de 146,2 MPa, MOE y MOR respectivamente, en flexión estática. Para estas propiedades se realizaron las correcciones al 12 % de contenido de humedad, utilizando factores de ajuste apropiados.

This work aims to characterize the wood of Eucalyptus bosistoana, through the study of physical (density and shrinkage) and mechanical (static bending, Janka hardness and compression parallel to grain) properties. The material used for the test was eleven 42 years old trees from a forest shelter belt located at the Experimental Station Bernardo Rosengurtt (Bañado de Medina, Cerro Largo). For physical properties, static bending and Janka hardness Uruguayan UNIT standards were used, while American ASTM standards were followed to carry out compression parallel to grain tests. It was found that the species basic density is 0.82 g cm-3 and 0.94 g cm-3 for the density at a moisture content of 12 %. The wood was classified as high shrinkage, with a volumetric value of 17.83 %. Regarding the mechanical properties the wood is of great strength. At an average moisture content of 15 %, the value for compression parallel to grain is 66.19 MPa. For static bending, MOE and MOR are 18738 MPa and 146.2 MPa, respectively. These properties were corrected to 12 % moisture content using appropriate adjustment factors.

Incidentally discovered adrenal masses, or adrenal incidentalomas, have become a common clinical problem owing to wide application of radiologic imaging techniques. This definition encompasses a heterogeneous spectrum of pathologic entities, including primary adrenocortical and medullary tumors, benign or malignant lesions, hormonally active or inactive lesions, metastases, and infections. Once an adrenal mass is detected, the clinician needs to address two crucial questions: is the mass malignant, and is it hormonally active? This article provides an overview of the diagnostic clinical approach and management of the adrenal incidentaloma. Mass size is the most reliable variable to distinguish benign and malignant adrenal masses. Adrenalectomy should be recommended for masses greater than 4.0 cm because of the increased risk of malignancy. Adrenal scintigraphy has proved useful in discriminating between benign and malignant lesions. Finally, fine-needle aspiration biopsy is an important tool in the evaluation of oncological patients and it may be useful in establishing the presence of metastatic disease. The majority of adrenal incidentalomas are non-hypersecretory cortical adenomas but an endocrine evaluation can lead to the identification of a significant number of cases with subclinical Cushing's syndrome (5-15%), pheochromocytoma (1.5-13%) and aldosteronoma (0-7%). The first step of hormonal screening should include an overnight low dose dexamethasone suppression test, the measure of urinary catecholamines or metanephrines, serum potassium and, in hypertensive patients, upright plasma aldosterone/plasma renin activity ratio. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate measurement may show evidence of adrenal androgen excess.
