RESUMOO surubim (Pseudoplatystoma sp.) é uma das espécie de peixe mais apreciadas para o consumo. Por ser uma espécie carnívora, exige atenção especial no que tange às suas exigências nutricionais. Até o momento, poucos estudos foram realizados para estabelecê-las na fase de engorda, em especial em sistema de cultivo intensivo. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar os desempenhos zootécnico e econômico de surubins (Pseudoplatystoma sp.) na fase final de crescimento, estocados em tanque-rede e alimentados com dietas com diferentes níveis de proteína. Os peixes, com peso de 356,6±40,3g, foram acondicionados em 12 tanques-rede de 18m3, nos quais permaneceram por cinco meses até adquirirem o peso comercial para abate. O tratamento experimental foi constituído por três dietas extrusadas comerciais, com os níveis de proteína bruta (36, 38, 40%PB) sendo substituídos gradativamente por carboidratos. Foram avaliados os parâmetros de crescimento, rendimento de filé, enzimas metabólicas e desempenho econômico. O ganho de peso, o ganho de peso diário, o consumo de dieta, a taxa de eficiência proteica, a sobrevivência e o rendimento de filé não apresentaram diferença significativa. A conversão alimentar foi melhor para os peixes alimentados com a dieta com 38 e 40%PB. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas para os parâmetros de índice hepatossomático e de enzimas hepáticas. Apesar dos maiores gastos com a ração contendo 38%PB em comparação à dieta com 36%PB, esta foi a que apresentou o melhor índice de custo por kg de peixe produzido. Os melhores índices de crescimento e o menor custo de arraçoamento foram obtidos pelos peixes alimentados com a dieta 38%PB, sendo esta, portanto recomendada para o arraçoamento na fase final de surubins em tanque-rede.

ABSTRACTThe Pseudoplatystoma sp. is one of the most appreciated fish species for consumption. Being a carnivorous species, the painted requires special attention regarding their nutritional requirements. To date, few studies have been conducted to establish them in their stage of fattening especially in intensive cultivation systems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the growth and economic performance of Pseudoplatystoma sp fed with protein levels reared in net cages. The fish weighing from 356.6 ± 40.3g were packed in twelve net cages in 18 m3 in which they remained for five months until acquiring the commercial weight for slaughter. The experimental treatment was constituted by three commercial extruded diets with different crude protein levels (36, 38, 40% CP) gradually being replaced with carbohydrate. Growth parameters, metabolic enzymes, fillet yield and economic performance were evaluated. The gain in weight, daily weight gain, diet consumption, protein efficiency rate, survival and fillet yield did not show significant difference. The feed conversion was best for fish fed a diet with 38 and 40% CP. No significant differences were observed for the hepatossomatic index parameters and liver enzymes. There were larger expenditures on rations containing 38% PB compared to the diet with 36% CP, this presented the best index of cost per kg of fish produced. The best growth rates and lower cost of feeding were obtained by fish fed with a 38% CP diet, which is, therefore, recommended for feeding in the final phase of surubins monitored via net cages.

Objetivo Determinar a prevalência de massa óssea baixa em pacientes adolescentes e adultos com fibrose cística e estudar os fatores potencialmente associados. Métodos Densidade mineral óssea foi determinada por absorciometria por dupla emissão de raios X na coluna lombar em pacientes ≤ 19 anos e na coluna e no fêmur em pacientes ≥ 20 anos. Avaliações nutricionais, bioquímicas e pulmonares foram realizadas. Dados referentes ao tratamento farmacológico foram coletados. Resultados 58 pacientes foram incluídos no estudo (25 homens/33 mulheres), média de idade de 23,9 anos (16-53). Massa óssea abaixo da esperada foi verificada em 20,7% dos pacientes. Não houve histórico de fratura. Z-score da coluna lombar associou-se positivamente com índice de massa corporal (r=0,3; p=0,022), volume expiratório forçado (% previsto) (r=0,415; p=0,001). A média do Z-score da coluna foi mais alta nas mulheres que nos homens (p=0,001), em pacientes que não possuíam insuficiência pancreática (p=0,02) e em pacientes que não haviam sido hospitalizados nos últimos três meses (p=0,032). Os fatores encontrados como preditores independentes de Z-score da coluna lombar foram sexo masculino (p=0,001) e índice de massa corporal (p=0,001). Conclusão Massa óssea baixa é frequente em pacientes com FC, estando associada independentemente com índice de massa corporal e sexo masculino.

Objective The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the prevalence of low bone mass density in cystic fibrosis patients as well as to evaluate the factors associated with bone mass in such patients. Methods Bone mass density was measured by dual-photon X-ray absorptiometry of lumbar spine (L1-L4), in patients ≤19 years old, or lumbar spine and femur (total and neck) in patients ≥20 years old. Evaluations of nutritional status, biochemical parameters, and lung function were performed. Medication data were obtained from medical records. Results Fifty-eight patients were included in the study (25 males/ 33 females), mean age 23.9 years (16-53years). The prevalence of bone mass below the expected range for age at any site was 20.7%. None of the subjects had history of fracture. Lumbar spine Z-score in cystic fibrosis patients correlated positively with body mass index (r= 0.3, p=0.001), and forced expiratory volume in the first second (% predicted) (r=0.415, p=0.022). Mean lumbar spine Z-score was higher in women (p=0.001), in patients with no pancreatic insufficiency (p=0.032), and in patients with no hospitalization in the last 3 months (p=0.02). After multivariate analysis, body mass index (p= 0.001) and sex (p=0.001) were independently associated with Z-score in lumbar spine. Conclusion Low bone mass is a frequent problem in patients with CF, being independently associated with body mass index, and male sex.

O presente trabalho verificou a utilização de plantas medicinais encontradas no Cerrado mato-grossense para o tratamento de hiperlipidemias e obesidade. Entrevistas com 180 pessoas acima de 50 anos foram realizadas em Nova Xavantina-MT. O questionário abordou nome popular, parte utilizada, forma de preparo e uso das espécies citadas, além de informações gerais sobre o uso de plantas. As dez plantas mais citadas foram coletadas, identificadas e estudadas por meio de uma revisão bibliográfica. A maioria dos entrevistados (95,6%) declarou utilizar plantas medicinais regularmente, sendo que 71,5% deles herdaram o conhecimento sobre plantas dos pais e avós e 94,20% relataram aconselhar o uso aos mais jovens. Além disso, 93,6% atestaram que as plantas são mais eficazes que os medicamentos de farmácia e 57% consideraram forte o efeito das mesmas, ou seja, sempre resolvem o problema de saúde. Quanto aos efeitos adversos, 95,9% disseram nunca ter sentido após o uso de plantas. Dos entrevistados, 56,7% conheciam ou já haviam utilizado plantas medicinais no tratamento de hiperlipidemias e obesidade, sendo citadas 54 espécies medicinais diferentes pertencentes a 53 gêneros e 38 famílias, com destaque para Fabaceae (13%). As dez plantas mais citadas foram: guatambu (Aspidosperma tomentosum Mart.), quina-do-cerrado (Strychnos pseudoquina St. Hil.), ipê-roxo [Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. Ex DC.) Standl], embaúba (Cecropia pachystachya Trec.), calunga (Simaba sp.), pata-de-vaca [Bauhinia rufa (Bong.) Steud.], mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomez), batata-de-tiú [Jatropha elliptica (Pohl.) Muell. Arg.], folha-de-carne (Casearia sylvestris Sw.) e manacá (Spiranthera odoratissima A. St.-Hil.). A folha foi a parte mais utilizada (46%) e o preparo das plantas ocorre principalmente por meio de infusão citado por 36,5% dos entrevistados. Apesar do uso popular destas plantas no combate as hiperlipidemias e obesidade, há necessidade de estudos fitoquímicos e farmacológicos que comprovem estas atividades, com vistas ao desenvolvimento de um fitoterápico.

This study checked the use of medicinal plants found in the Cerrado mato-grossense for the treatment of hyperlipidemia and obesity. Interviews with 180 people over 50 years were held in Nova Xavantina-MT. The questionnaire addressed popular name, part used, type of preparation and use of the species mentioned, beyond general information about the use of plants. The ten plants most cited were collected, identified and studied through a literature review. Most respondents (95.6%) said using medicinal plants regularly, while 71.5% of them inherited the knowledge of plants of parents and grandparents and 94.20% reported the use to advise youngsters. Furthermore, 93.6% attested that the plants are more effective than the drugs from pharmacy and 57% considered the strong effect of the same, i.e., they always solved health problems. Regarding adverse effects, 95.9% said they have never felt them after the use of plants. Of the respondents, 56.7% knew or had used medicinal plants in the treatment of hyperlipidemias and obesity, being cited 54 medicinal species belonging to 53 different genera and 38 families, with emphasis on Fabaceae (13%). The ten most cited were: guatambu (Aspidosperma tomentosum Mart.), quina-do-cerrado (Strychnos pseudoquina St. Hil.), ipê-roxo [Tabebuia impetiginosa (Mart. Ex DC.) Standl], embaúba (Cecropia pachystachya Trec.), calunga (Simaba sp.), pata-de-vaca [Bauhinia rufa (Bong.) Steud.], mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomez), batata-de-tiú [Jatropha elliptica (Pohl.) Muell. Arg.], folha-de-carne (Casearia sylvestris Sw.) and manacá (Spiranthera odoratissima A. St.-Hil.). The leaf was the most used (46%) and the preparation of the plants occurs mainly through the infusion cited by 36,5% of respondents. Despite the popular use of these plants for treatment of obesity and hyperlipidemia, further chemical and pharmacological studies are required to demonstrate these activities, in order to develop a phytotherapic product.

Steel sheet coated with zinc or 55%Al-Zn is widely used at the civil construction, mainly for roofing and cladding applications. The 55%Al-Zn coated steel shows mechanical properties slightly different from zinc coated steel, even under the same heat cycle processing, due to the higher molten metal temperature and also to the higher strength of the 55%Al-Zn coating. The knowledge of those differences can be used by the final users to evaluate if some of those products are not suitable for any specific application. Although those two coated products are widely used at the civil construction in Brazil, only a limited literature is available on the difference between the mechanical properties of those products. Through tensile tests of commercial grade samples - as coated and after removing the coating - the aim of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties (tensile strength, yield strength, total elongation and hardening coefficient) and also how much the coating influences the mechanical properties of the zinc and 55%Al-Zn coated steel. The 55%Al-Zn coated steel showed higher yield and tensile strength and lower total elongation and hardening coefficient compared to zinc coated steel and the coating showed a significant influence on the mechanical properties of both products.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between hematological and biochemical parameters and tuberculosis process activity time according to clinical complaint duration. It was a retrospective study analyzing medical records from 80 pulmonary tuberculosis patients at Botucatu Medical School University Hospital (Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil), who were divided into 2 groups according to clinical complaint duration: Group 1 (G1) - up to three months; Group 2 (G2) - over three months. Parameters included: age, gender, bacilloscopy, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), platelet count, alpha1-globulin, alpha2-globulin, gamma globulin, mucoprotein, alpha1-acid glycoprotein values, and the presence of risk factors such as smoking, alcoholism, drug addiction, sexual promiscuity, contact with tuberculosis carriers, and previous treatment. Groups were compared by calculating t and p, and Chi-square (X²) and p. Comparisons revealed a tendency towards smoking with a higher frequency of smokers in G1 (0.05<p<0.10). G1 also tended to present greater platelet values than G2 (0.05<p<0.10) and presented significantly higher ESR values than G2 (p<0.05). Other factors did not show any significantly different behavior between groups (p>0.05). A correlation was found between ESR, platelet count, smoking and less than three months clinical duration.

Seventy-nine HIV-1 infected patients were studied in three groups: Group G1 - 11 patients with no antiretroviral therapy; G2 - 40 patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy, 33 with only two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI), and seven with two NRTI and one protease inhibitor (PI), all with viral load (VL) equal or higher than 80 copies of plasma RNA/ml; Group G3 - 28 patients, 23 on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), 18 with two NRTI and one PI, and five with two NRTI and one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI), the remaining five with combination of two NRTI. All G3 patients had undetectable viral load for at least the past six months. The control group (Gc) included 20 normal blood donors without clinical complaints or signs of disease and negative for anti-HIV-1/2 antibodies. Serum cytokine levels pg/ml (TNF-alpha, INF-gamma, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10) were determined in all patients including controls. CD4+ T and CD8+ T lymphocyte counts were made in the 79 patients by flow cytometry; VL determination was by NASBA technology. Analysis of results showed that the number of CD4+ T and CD8+ T lymphocytes were higher in G2 than G1, while VL was 0.5 log lower. G3 patients had similar lymphocyte values to G2, however they were chosen for G3 because their VL was undetectable, different by 4.0 log to G2. These results show the effect of antiretroviral treatment in G2 and G3 patients with better performance in the latter. Statistical difference was seen between the three groups and controls for serum cytokine behavior: TNF-alpha [H=48.323; p<0.001;(G1=G2=G3)>Gc]; INF-gamma[H=28.992; p<0.001; (G1=G2=G3)>Gc]; IL-4[H=48.323; p<0.001; (G1=G2=G3)>Gc]; IL-10[H=47.256; p<0.001; (G1=G2=G3)>Gc. There was no statistical difference in IL-2 values between all groups (H=6.071; p>0.10; G1=G2=G3=Gc). In absolute values however, G3 showed slightly lower TNF-alpha, IL-4, and IL-10, and higher INF-gamma and IL-2, to G1 and G2. This suggests a better performance in G3 patients, especially in IL-2 behavior. For cytokine profile, the three groups showed mature Th0 subset. In G1 72.73% were mature Th0, and 27.27% Th2; G2, 72.50% mature Th0, and 27.50% Th2; and G3, 89.29% mature Th0, and 10.71% Th2. There was no statistical difference between groups (chi22=3.014; p>0.10; G1=G2=G3). Statistical difference was seen between G2 and G3 for antiretroviral regimes used (chi21=27.932; p<0.001; G3>G2); HAART with PI predominated in G3, suggesting that it was responsible for this better performance. Linear correlation between pairs of variables was made with patient groups only, excluding controls. This was made separately for G1 and G2, 51 patients with detectable VL, and G1, G2, and G3 also including those with undetectable VL. The results showed a strong positive correlation between TNF-alpha and IL-4; TNF-alpha and IL-10; INF-gamma and IL-2; IL-4 and IL-10; IL-2 and CD4+. Weak negative correlation was seen between IL-2 and VL. Considering all correlations together, we found that IL-2 had the most correlations - eleven - strong, weak, positive, and negative; it was the only one that correlated with CD4+ (positively) and LV (negatively). The number of correlations allowed us to evaluate qualitative aspects such as IL-2 correlated positively with INF-gamma and CD4+ and negatively with LV; this somehow expresses the compatible profile with subset Th1, which could signify a tendency towards immune response recovery. Determination of cytokine serum values, especially IL-2, could be useful in follow-up of HIV-1 infected patients under HAART together with CD4+ and VL count.

There are doubts about the presence of glycosuria and the progress of glomerular disease. Some reports suggest that glycosuria could be an index of a more severe tubulointerstitial lesion. We investigated the presence of glycosuria in 60 patients with primary glomerular diseases: 17 patients (28%) had glycosuria and 43 patients (72%) were glycosuria free. The two groups were similar in age, arterial pressure and sex. Serum creatinine was higher in patients with glycosuria (2.0 ± 1.7 vs 1.3 ± 0.9 mg/dl, P<0.05). The protein excretion rate was 7.5 ± 3.7 vs 5.3 ± 4.2 g/day (P>0.05) in patients with and without glycosuria, respectively, while serum albumin was lower in patients with glycosuria (1.7 ± 0.6 vs 2.7 ± 1.0 g/dl, P<0.05). Several histological forms were present in the group with glycosuria, with membranous glomerulonephritis being the most frequent. Histological evidence of tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis prevailed in patients with glycosuria, suggesting a poor prognosis for these patients. We may conclude that the presence of glycosuria in patients with glomerular disease is associated with more pronounced tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis and therefore imply a poorer prognosis.

Em outubro de 1986, 7 a 22 dias após uma reunião em uma fazenda no estado da Paraíba, 26 pessoas apresentaram doença febril, associada a edema bipalpebral bilateral, e de membros inferiores, hepatoesplenomegalia leve, linfadenopatia e, mais raramente, a um exantema. Um menino de 11 anos apresentou arritmia atrial ao eletroeardiograma e um paciente de 74 anos desenvolveu insuficiência cardíaca aguda. Em 2 pacientes hospitalizados em São Paulo, foi estabelecido o diagnóstico de Doença de Chagas aguda por observação de T. cruzi em creme leucocitário. Em autópsia de um caso fatal foi demonstrada cardiomiopatia chagásica aguda. O xenodiagnóstico foi positivo em 9 de 14 pacientes testados. Anticorpos específicos de classe IgG foram encontrados em todos os pacientes e da classe IgM em 20 de 22 doentes examinados. Estudo epidemiológico revelou Triatoma brasiliensis nas vizinhanças desta fazenda, porem tal vetor não foi encontrado na casa onde a maioria dos hóspedes pernoitou. Observou-se alta taxa de gambás infectados por Trypanosoma cruzi. Essas observações, associadas as informações relativas aos alimentos consumidos, sugerem que a contaminação de alimentos tenha se originado de secreções de marsupiais naturalmente infectados ou de triatomíneos infectados, que poderiam ter sido esmagados durante o preparo do caldo de cana.

In October, 1986, 7 to 22 days after a meeting at a farm in Paraíba state, 26 individuals presented with a febrile illness associated with bilateral eyelid and lower limb edema, mild hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and, occasionally a skin rash. A 11-year-old boy exhibited atrial premature complexes and a 74-year-old patient developed acute heart failure. In two patients hospitalized in São Paulo city, acute Chagas' disease was diagnosed by the demonstration of circulating Trypanosoma cruzi. At autopsy in a fatal case, acute Chagas' cardiomyopathy was demonstrated. Xenodiagnosis were positive in 9 out of 14 tested patients. A specific IgG immune response was found in all patients and specific IgM antibodies were identified in 20 out of 22 tested patients. A epidemiological survey showed the existence of Triatoma brasiliensis in the outbuildings of this farm, but none in the house where most of the guests stayed. A high rate of infection with Trypanosoma cruzi was found in opossums. These observations together with those related to the food consumed by the patients, lead the authors to suggest that the human infections resulted from oral contamination probably originating from naturally infected marsupials in the area or crushed infected bugs.

Foram estudadas 5 crianças com subnutrição grave por ocasião da admissão, durante a recuperação e por ocasião da cura clínica. Em cada ocasião foram estudados: peso, estatura, teores de hemoglobina e colesterol, glicemia ,eletroforese de proteínas, teste de Gesell, dados de exame neurológico, pneumencefalograma, eletrencefalograma e líquido cefalorraqueano. Apesar de recuperação clínica e bioquímica muito satisfatória, o teste de Gesell mostrou pequena recuperação neuropsicomotora no último estudo em comparação com o grave retardo global observado à admissão. Todos os pacientes apresentavam atrofia cortical difusa no primeiro estudo pelo pneumencefalograma: três dos 4 pacientes submetidos a novo exame após a cura clínica ainda apresentavam a referida alteração. Os estudos eletrencefalográficos e de líquido céfalorraqueano não evidenciaram alterações praticamente em todos os estudos.

The cases of 5 children with severe malnutrition, marasmic type, aged four to fourteen months are reported. The patients were sturied at admission in the hospital and 45-60 days and 4-5 months later. Eeach study included: hemoglobinemia, cholesterolemia, glycemia, weight, height, Gesell test, neurological examination, pneumoencephalogram, electroencephalogram and cerebrospinal fluid examination. Biochemical and physical recuperation was very good. Gesell test show an important and homogeneous deficiency, even at the third study. All patients presented cortical atrophy at the pneumoencephalogram in the first study: 4 patients were re-studied 4-5 months later and only one become normal. No changes in electroencephalogram and cerebrospinal fluid were found. It was not possible to evaluate the significancy of the poor psychosocial environment from where the patients came in the aetiology of the mental deficiency.
