Abstract The corn leafhopper Dalbulus maidis (DeLong) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), transmits three important plant pathogens that adversely affect corn crop and ranges from the USA to Argentina. The vector has a rich natural enemy complex that generates high levels of parasitism, but its populations are persistent and prevalent. We characterized the oviposition sites of D. maidis on young corn plants in order to verify the hypothesis that the vector has an oviposition strategy for mitigating parasitism. Oviposition locations on plants were assessed in the laboratory and eggs within corn plants were exposed to natural parasitism in a cornfield. Eggs were located mostly laid in the unfolded leaves and were attacked by five parasitoid species. Parasitism was significantly affected by the class of leaf and the position of the egg in the leaf. Anagrus virlai Triapitsyn was the most abundant parasitoid species, which emerged significantly higher in the basal blade than other species. Our results suggest that leafhoppers minimize egg parasitism by laying their eggs within concealed locations on the plant.

Abstract In this study, four milk substrates were analyzed to evaluate bovine Lactobacillus plantarum strain viability after 24 and 48 h of fermentation. In addition, cell viability, and post-acidification in transition milk fermented by these bacteria were assessed over a 60-d storage period at 4 and 25 °C. Significant reduction (30.9 %) of cell viability after 48 h of fermentation was observed for the formulation with whole milk. However, in fermented transition milk stored at 4 °C, cell viability and acidity were maintained at acceptable levels throughout the 60-d storage period. The viability of L. plantarum in fermented transition milk stored at 25 °C remained acceptable up to 50 d and minimum pH values were analyzed after 38 d of storage and maximum acidity levels after 56 d. Considering these results, transition milk may be preserved by L. plantarum fermentation as a substitute for milk in the artificial feed for calves as functional food.

Resumen En este estudio se analizaron cuatro sustratos de la leche para evaluar la viabilidad de la cepa de Lactobacillus plantarum de origen bovino después de 24 y 48 horas de fermentación. Además, se evaluó la viabilidad celular y la post-acidificación en la leche de transición fermentada por estas bacterias durante un periodo de almacenamiento de 60 días a 4 y 25 °C. Se observó una reducción significativa (de 30.9 %) de la viabilidad celular después de 48 horas de fermentación para la formulación con leche entera. Sin embargo, en la leche de transición fermentada almacenada a 4 °C, la viabilidad celular y la acidez se mantuvieron en niveles aceptables a lo largo del periodo de 60 días. La viabilidad de L. plantarum en la leche de transición fermentada permaneció aceptable hasta los 50 días, y se analizaron los valores de pH mínimo después de 38 días de almacenamiento y los niveles máximos de acidez después de 56 días. Tomando en cuenta estos resultados, la leche de transición puede ser conservada mediante la fermentación con L. plantarum como un sustituto de la leche en la alimentación artificial para terneros como alimento funcional.

Resumo O emprego de microrganismos na micropropagação de plantas de orquídeas pode melhorar a produção de mudas por aumentar a resistência das plantas a doenças e diminuir o requerimento de fertilizantes. Neste estudo, um fungo (F1), uma levedura (L1) e uma bactéria gram-positiva (B+) foram isolados de raízes da orquídea Oncidium varicosum e empregados no cultivo in vitro de protocormos e plântulas obtidos de sementes desta espécie. No primeiro ensaio, o meio Murashige & Skoog (MS) enriquecido com sacarose e inoculado individualmente com os microorganismos não proporcionou melhoria no desenvolvimento dos protocormos do que o meio sem microrganismos. No segundo ensaio, com plântulas em início de enraizamento e com três meios de cultura, o meio MS sem sacarose inoculado com B+ proporcionou aumento no número médio de folhas (3,8 para 7,5), raízes (4,0 para 12,1) e comprimento da maior raiz (1,1 para 6,4cm) por planta, comparado ao meio sem a bactéria, sugerindo sinergismo entre plantas e o microrganismo na ausência de sacarose no meio. Na aclimatização em casa de vegetação, plântulas advindas do meio aveia-ágar inoculado com B+ apresentaram o maior diâmetro de pseudobulbo, número de raízes, altura e massa fresca entre os tratamentos. Conclui-se que há potencial de aplicação de microrganismos para melhorar a produção de mudas de O. varicosum.

Abstract Sustainable production of orchids may be achieved with the use of symbiotic microorganisms that improve resistance of plants to pests and diseases and reduce the need of substrate fertilization. In this study, one fungus (F1), one yeast (Y1) and one gram-positive bacteria (B+) were isolated from the roots of the orchid Oncidium varicosum and used in the cultivation of protocorms and plantlets obtained from seeds of this species. Cultivation of protocorms in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium enriched with sucrose and inoculated with microorganisms did not result in better development of protocorms. However, the use of plantlets in the rooting phase in MS medium without sucrose and inoculated with B+ resulted in plantlets with more leaves and roots and longer shoots and roots, suggesting synergism between microorganism and plant when sucrose is absent. The major benefits of co-cultivating plantlets and these microorganisms were observed in the acclimatization in the greenhouse. Plantlets obtained with oat meal agar medium and B+ showed the highest pseudobulb diameter, number of roots, height and fresh weight among treatments. We concluded that the application of rooting-derived microorganisms in the in vitro culture and plantlet acclimatization of Oncidium varicosum is beneficial.

O objetivo deste estudo foi averiguar a existência de uma possível transição florística ao longo de um gradiente altitudinal numa floresta serrana do sul da Bahia, Brasil. A área amostrada situa-se em uma zona de transição (leste-oeste) entre florestas ombrófilas e estacionais. Um transecto linear abrangendo um hectare (10 × 1.000 m) foi situado na encosta da serra (de ca. 350 a 750 m.s.m.). Todas as árvores e lianas com DAP > 5 foram numeradas, coletadas e medidas. Foram calculados valores de densidade, dominância, frequência e valor de importância (VI) para cada espécie amostrada. Foram amostrados 1.400 indivíduos agrupados em 264 espécies e 56 famílias de angiospermas. Cariniana legalis (Mart.) Kuntze teve o maior VI, devido à elevada dominância de poucos indivíduos. Discocarpus pedicellatus Fiaschi & Cordeiro e Ampelocera glabra Kuhlm. foram as espécies mais frequentes, com 90 e 86 indivíduos respectivamente. Noventa e seis espécies foram representadas por apenas um indivíduo. As famílias mais diversas foram Fabaceae e Myrtaceae com 37 e 31 espécies respectivamente. Análises de agrupamento e correspondência (DCA) revelaram que a composição florística da floresta situada na porção mais alta do transecto foi distinta da restante. As florestas de porções mais baixas e mais altas do fragmento puderam ser consideradas respectivamente como semideciduais e ombrófilas. Embora haja diferenças florísticas evidentes entre essas florestas, ambas estão claramente vinculadas ao setor sul-Baiano da Mata Atlântica.

The purpose of this study was to attempt to detect a floristic transition in forest along an altitudinal gradient on a mountain side in southern Bahia, Brazil. The study site is located at the east-west transition from tropical moist to semideciduous forests. A belt transect of one hectare (10 × 1000 m) was established running up the slope (from ca. 350 m to 750 m elevation). All included trees and lianas > 5 cm in diameter at breast height were numbered, collected, and measured. Density, dominance, frequency, and importance values (IV) were calculated for each species. We encountered 1400 individuals and 264 species of woody plants in 56 families. Cariniana legalis (Mart.) Kuntze had the highest IV, based on the dominance of a small number of trees. Discocarpus pedicellatus Fiaschi & Cordeiro and Ampelocera glabra Kuhlm. were the most frequent trees, with 90 and 86 individuals respectively. Ninety-six species were represented by a single individual. The Fabaceae and Myrtaceae were the most diverse families with 37 and 31 species respectively. Cluster analysis and correspondence analysis (DCA) revealed that the composition of the forest along the uppermost 30 percent of the transect was distinct from the rest. The lower and upper forests can be considered respectively as semideciduous and moist forests. Although there are some well-marked floristic differences between these forests, both clearly belong to the southern Bahian sector of the Atlantic coastal forests.

Várias espécies vegetais liberam ânions de ácidos orgânicos (AO) de suas raízes em resposta a íons tóxicos de alumínio (Al) presentes no ambiente radicular. Hipoteticamente esses AO complexam os íons de Al presentes no apoplasto da raiz e/ou na rizosfera evitando assim sua interação com componentes celulares e ainda sua penetração no simplasto da raiz. Dois padrões temporais de exsudação são reconhecidos. No padrão I, os AO são rapidamente liberados pelas raízes após a exposição das mesmas aos íons de Al. No padrão II de exsudação, ocorre um atraso na liberação de AO após exposição das raízes à solução contendo Al. Outros compostos além dos AO foram detectados em exsudatos radiculares e relacionados com mecanismos de resistência a Al em plantas. Espécies vegetais como trigo sarraceno e chá apresentam mecanismos de tolerância ao Al. Estes mecanismos conferem às plantas capacidade de inativar e de armazenar o Al em formas não tóxicas nas folhas. Os distúrbios induzidos por Al em rotas metabólicas ainda são desconhecidos, assim como a relação desses distúrbios com as mudanças nas concentrações de AO em raízes que estão sob estresse de Al. Altas concentrações internas de AO nas raízes nem sempre levam a altas taxas de exsudação desses compostos, mesmo quando a variabilidade espacial da concentração e da exsudação ao longo do eixo radicular é considerada. Certamente Al induz uma grande permeabilidade de AO em células jovens da raiz. Canais aniônicos localizados na membrana plasmática são os prováveis transportadores desses compostos orgânicos para fora da célula. Plantas que superexpressam genes envolvidos na síntese e na exsudação de AO bem como genes relacionados com a toxidez de Al foram desenvolvidas pela engenharia genética. Na maioria dos casos essas plantas tiveram uma maior capacidade para desenvolver sob estresse de Al. Esses resultados indicam, portanto, novas alternativas para o desenvolvimento de plantas mais adaptadas às condições de solos ácidos e com problemas de toxidez de Al. O impacto ambiental que a grande quantidade de exsudatos radiculares de plantas geneticamente modificadas pode causar, especialmente na microbiota do solo, é discutido.

Numerous plant species can release organic acid anions (OA) from their roots in response to toxic aluminium (Al) ions present in the rooting medium. Hypothetically OA complex Al in the root apoplast and/or rhizosphere and thus avoid its interaction with root cellular components and its entry in the root symplast. Two temporal patterns of root OA exudation are observed. In pattern I, OA release is rapidly activated after the contact of the root with Al ions while in pattern II there is a lag phase between the addition of Al and the beginning of OA release. Compounds other than OA have been detected in root exudates and are also correlated with Al resistance in plants. Plant species like buckwheat and tea show mechanisms of Al tolerance, which confer them the capacity to inactivate and store Al internally in the leaves. Disturbances in metabolic pathways induced by Al are still obscure and their relation to the altered OA concentration observed in roots under Al stress is not yet established. High concentrations of OA in roots do not always lead to high rates of OA release even when the spatial distribution of these two characteristics along the root axis is taken into account. Al induces high permeability to OA in young root cells and anion channels located in the cell membrane have been proposed to mediate the transport of OA to outside the cell. Genetically modified plants that overexpress genes involved in the biosynthesis and transport of OA as well as in Al toxicity events at the cell level have been generated. In most cases the transformations resulted in an improved ability of the plant to cope with Al stress. These promising findings reinforce the possibility of engineering plants with superior resistance to Al-toxic acid soils. The environmental impact of the large amounts of root exudates possibly conferred by these genetically modified plants is discussed, with special emphasis on soil microbiota.
