Abstract Considering the side effects in the oral cavity and dental structures of radiotherapy (RDT) for head and neck cancer, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of RDT on the root dentin concerning the obliteration of dentinal tubules, the inorganic composition of intra-radicular dentin, and the integrity of collagen fibers. Thirty human canines were selected from a biobank and randomly divided into two groups (n=15). The samples were sectioned buccolingually, and a hemisection was used for structural analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). Low-vacuum SEM images were obtained at 2000-x magnification to observe the obliteration of the dentinal tubules. Moreover, compositional evaluation was performed using EDS. After RDT, the SEM and EDS analyses were repeated using the same methodology. RDT was applied fractionally at 2 Gy per day, 5 days per week, for 7 weeks, resulting in a total dose of 70 Gy. The collagen integrity of the irradiated and non-irradiated samples was analyzed using Masson’s trichrome and picrosirius red staining polarization microscopy. Samples subjected to RDT exhibited dentinal tubule obliteration (p < 0.001); low integrity of type I and III collagen fibers (p < 0.05); compositional reduction of calcium (p = 0.012), phosphorus (p = 0.001), and magnesium (p < 0.001); an increased Ca/P ratio (p < 0.001). RDT affects the structure of dentinal tubules, the inorganic composition of intra-radicular dentin, and the collagen fiber integrity in the root dentin, which may interfere with the effectiveness and durability of dental procedures.

Resumo Considerando os efeitos colaterais na cavidade oral e estruturas dentárias da radioterapia (RDT) para o câncer de cabeça e pescoço, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da RDT sobre a dentina radicular quanto à obliteração dos túbulos dentinários, a composição inorgânica da dentina intra-radicular e a integridade das fibras colágenas. Trinta caninos humanos foram selecionados de um biobanco e divididos aleatoriamente em dois grupos (n=15). As amostras foram seccionadas no sentido vestíbulo-lingual, e uma hemissecção foi utilizada para análise estrutural por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e espectrômetro de raios X de dispersão de energia (EDS). Imagens de MEV de baixo vácuo foram obtidas com aumento de 2500x para observar a obliteração dos túbulos dentinários. Além disso, a avaliação composicional foi realizada usando EDS. Após a RDT, as análises em MEV e EDS foram repetidas usando a mesma metodologia. A RDT foi aplicada fracionada a 2 Gy por dia, 5 dias por semana, durante 7 semanas, resultando em uma dose total de 70 Gy. A integridade do colágeno das amostras irradiadas e não irradiadas foi analisada usando microscopia de polarização de coloração com tricrômio de Masson e picrosirius red. As amostras submetidas a RDT apresentaram obliteração dos túbulos dentinários (p < 0,001); baixa integridade das fibras colágenas tipo I e III (p < 0,05); redução composicional de cálcio (p = 0,012), fósforo (p = 0,001) e magnésio (p < 0,001); e uma relação Ca/P aumentada (p < 0,001). A RDT afeta a estrutura dos túbulos dentinários, a composição inorgânica da dentina intra-radicular e a integridade das fibras colágenas na dentina radicular, o que pode interferir na eficácia e durabilidade dos procedimentos odontológicos.

Resumo Hemoplasmas são bactérias epieritrocíticas que infectam mamíferos. ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemoalbiventris’ foi detectado previamente em gambás-de-orelha-branca (Didelphis albiventris) das regiões sul e centro-oeste do Brasil. O presente estudo objetivou: i) triar os gambás para as doenças transmitidas por carrapatos (Piroplasmida e Anaplasmataceae); e ii) detectar e caracterizar as espécies de hemoplasma que infectam gambás nas cidades de Curitiba e Foz do Iguaçu, no Estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil. Trinta amostras de sangue de gambás-de-orelha-branca foram analisadas por PCR. Os animais não estavam infestados por ectoparasitos. O gene endógeno de mamífero gapdh foi amplificado em todas as amostras. Todos os gambás testaram negativos para Theileria/Babesia spp. e Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp. por PCR, respectivamente, para os genes 18S rRNA e 16S rRNA. Uma PCR gene-específica, baseada no gene 16S rRNA de hemoplasmas, mostrou que três/13 (23,08%; CI 95%: 8,18-50,26%) gambás de Foz do Iguaçu foram positivos para Mycoplasma sp. hemotrópico. Todos os gambás de Curitiba testaram negativos para hemoplasmas. O sequenciamento de fragmentos dos genes 16S e 23S rRNA revelou que os animais estavam infectados pelo ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’. Embora ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’ seja prevalente em gambás no Brasil, os sinais clínicos associados à infecção e os prováveis vetores permanecem desconhecidos.

Abstract Hemoplasmas are epierythrocytic bacteria that infect mammals. ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemoalbiventris’ was detected in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) from southern and central-western Brazil. The present study aimed at: i) screening opossums for tick-borne (TBP) pathogens (Piroplasmida and Anaplasmataceae) and ii) detecting and characterizing hemoplasma species infecting opossums from Curitiba and Foz do Iguaçu cities in the Paraná State, southern Brazil. Thirty blood samples from white-eared opossums were evaluated by PCR assays. Animals were not infested by ectoparasites. The mammalian endogenous gapdh gene was consistently amplified in all samples. All opossums tested negative for Theileria/Babesia spp. and Ehrlichia/Anaplasma spp. by PCR based on 18S rRNA and 16S rRNA genes, respectively. A genus-specific PCR assay based on the 16S rRNA gene of hemoplasmas showed that three/13 (23.08%; CI 95%: 8.18-50.26%) opossums from Foz do Iguaçu were positive for hemotropic Mycoplasma sp. All opossums from Curitiba tested negative for hemoplasmas. Sequencing of both the 16S and 23S rRNA genes revealed that the animals were infected by ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’. Although ‘Ca. M. haemoalbiventris’ is prevalent in opossums in Brazil, clinical signs associated with its infection and its putative vectors remain unknown.

Resumo O desenvolvimento ósseo nas aves é diferenciado e, radiograficamente, não existe uma placa de crescimento visível. A densitometria radiográfica (DR) é utilizada para avaliar e mensurar a densidade óssea. Foram utilizadas cinquenta e quatro codornas-japonesas (Coturnix japonica) de um dia de vida e de ambos os sexos. A cada três dias foram pesados dois animais e, em seguida, identificados, submetidos à eutanásia e radiografados. Foi utilizada uma escada de alumínio de vinte e um degraus para a mensuração densitométrica. Realizaram-se mensurações de comprimento do úmero, rádio, ulna, fêmur, tibiotarso e tarsometatarso; correlação do período de postura com a ocorrência de hiperostose poliostótica (HP) nos ossos longos; bem como avaliação densitométrica ao longo de 80 dias. Houve aumento na densidade óssea conforme crescimento em comprimento dos ossos em úmero, seguido pelo tibiotarso, ulna e fêmur, verificado principalmente no período de sete a 13 dias de vida. No úmero e no fêmur, houve significativo aumento de densidade óssea também entre 70 a 79 dias. A partir do 61º dia, foi identificada a presença de hiperostose poliostótica nos fêmures das fêmeas. A DR é uma técnica aplicável em C. japonica como um método acessível e de baixo custo. Os resultados confirmam um grande aumento mineral ao longo do crescimento e durante a postura, confirmando a presença de HP na espécie.

Abstract In birds, bone development is distinct and there is no radiographically obvious growth plate. Radiographic densitometry (RD) has been used to evaluate and measure bone density. Fifty-four one day-old Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica), of both sexes, were used. Every three days, two animals were weighed, identified, euthanized and x-rayed. A 21-step aluminum step wedge was used for densitometric measurements. The length of the humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibiotarsus and tarsometatarsus was measured. Bone density increased as the bones grew in length in humerus followed by tibiotarsus, ulna and femur between 7 and 13 days of age. The humerus and femur increased also between 70-79 days. From day 61 it was possible to identify polyostotic hyperostosis in female femurs. Radiographic densitometry is an accessible and low cost method applicable in C. japonica. The results confirm a large mineral deposition increasing during growth and also during the laying phase, confirming the presence of polyostotic hyperostosis in this specie.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) and of osteoprotegerin (OPG), important proteins correlated with osteoclastogenesis, in central giant cell lesions (CGCL) and peripheral giant cell lesions (PGCL) and to compare their expression with the histological and clinical parameters for quantification of multinucleated giant cells (MGC) and their nuclei, lesion size, and recurrences. Twenty cases of each lesion type were selected to quantify the number of MGCs and nuclei/mm2 of connective tissue. The immunoreactivity of RANKL and OPG was expressed as a percentage of the marked area in the stroma. Clinical data were collected from pathoanatomical and medical reports. No statistical differences were found for the number of MGCs (p = 0.24) between PGCL and CGCL, but the number of nuclei within the MGCs was higher in CGCL (p = 0.01). RANKL expression was higher in CGCL than in PGCL (p = 0.04) and all recurrent lesions showed higher RANKL and OPG expressions than nonrecurrent lesions. We report higher RANKL expression and a greater number of nuclei in CGCL, which may explain the difference in clinical behaviour between these lesions and their pathogenesis.

O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar a duração do estro, momento da ovulação e o desempenho reprodutivo de marrãs submetidas à infusão de plasma seminal no início do estro da cobertura. Foram utilizadas 147 marrãs pré-púberes da linhagem Camborough 22Ò alojadas no verão (n=69) e inverno (n=78). No início do terceiro estro, as matrizes foram submetidas a uma infusão transcervical com plasma seminal ou foram alocadas em um grupo controle. As fêmeas foram examinadas três vezes ao dia para a detecção do estro e da ovulação, sendo realizadas três inseminações com intervalos de 8 e 16h após o início do estro. A duração do estro não foi afetada pela infusão de plasma seminal. No verão, as fêmeas infundidas com plasma seminal a nteciparam a ovulação em 4,18h (p=0,06), enquanto no inverno não foi observada nenhuma diferença. Com relação à taxa de retorno ao estro, à taxa de parto ajustada e ao tamanho da leitegada não foram observadas diferenças entre os grupos nas duas épocas do ano avaliadas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the estrus length, time of ovulation and reproductive performance of gilts submitted to the infusion of seminal plasma at the beginning of the breeding oestrus. A hundred and forty seven pre-puberal Camborough Ò gilts housed in the summer (n=69) and in the winter (n=78) were used. In the beginning of the three oestrus, gilts were submitted to a transcervical infusion of seminal plasma or allocated to a control group. Gilts were examined Three times daily for oestrus and ovulation detection, and three inseminations were performed in 8 and 16h intervals after the beginning of oestrus. Oestrus duration was not influenced by seminal plasma infusion. In the summer, gilts received seminal plasma infusion anticipated ovulation in 4.18h (p=0.06), whereas in the winter no difference was found. As to return to oestrus rate, adjusted farrowing rate and litter size, no difference was observed between the groups in both evaluated seasons.

RESUMO O arrasto induzido em uma aeronave pode ser reduzido modificando-se suas pontas de asa. Alguns modelos de pontas de asa deslocam os vórtices para fora, diminuindo o arrasto induzido. Tratando-se de aviões agrícolas, que efetuam a deposição de defensivos sobre plantações, em vôo rasante, deslocamentos do vórtice são fundamentais para o aumento na eficiência da pulverização. Neste trabalho, efetuaram-se ensaios em túnel de vento para o estudo da influência que alguns tipos de pontas de asa podem ocasionar no desempenho de um avião agrícola. As pontas de asa ensaiadas foram: 'delta tip', 'winglet' e 'curvada para baixo'. A 'delta tip' apresenta moderado benefício aerodinâmico e bom posicionamento do vórtice para aplicação agrícola, enquanto a 'winglet' demonstra razoável benefício aerodinâmico e bom posicionamento do vórtice, mas prejuízo estrutural. A ponta de asa 'curvada para baixo' apresenta bom desempenho aerodinâmico; entretanto, posição do vórtice é inadequada para uso agrícola. Dentre estas, a ponta 'delta tip' é bastante promissora para emprego em uma aeronave agrícola.

ABSTRACT The induced drag in an aircraft be reduced through modifications of the wing tip. Some models displace wingtips vortices outwards diminishing the induced drag. Concerning agricultural airplanes, wing tip vortex position is really important while spreading products over a plantation. In this work, wind tunnel tests were made in order to study the influence in aerodynamic characteristics and vortex position over Brazilian agricultural aircraft, by the following types of wing tips: delta tip, winglet and down curved. The down curved tip was better for total drag reduction but not good with reference to vortex position. The delta tip gave moderate improvement on aerodynamic characteristic but a good vortex position. The winglet had a better vortex position but caused an undesirable result with reference to the wing root bending moment. Therefore, delta tip is more promising for agricultural aircraft.
