Abstract The restoration methods applied on the areas affected by the Fundão tailings dam collapse have a high priority in Mariana region. We evaluated the effect of different restoration methods and site preparation techniques, depth and seasonality on penetration resistance of tailings, and how these predictors affect tree aboveground biomass in areas affected by the Fundão dam collapse in Mariana, Brazil. No significant differences in penetration resistance and aboveground biomass between treatments were observed, but significant differences were observed between seasonal periods. The main univariate model explained the significant effects of depth and seasonality, mainly by a negatively wet effect on penetration resistance. According to the best models (univariate and multivariate) were those that had depth as a predictor. This study showed how penetration resistance can be an indicator to select the best period for restoration process in areas affected by the collapse of the Fundão dam, but no limit to the aboveground biomass recovery on tailing.

O objetivo deste estudo foi o de determinar as mudanças na composição, abundância e riqueza de espécies ao longo de um gradiente de floresta com variações de solo e inundações. As florestas localizam-se na margem esquerda do Rio Jucu, no Parque Natural Municipal de Jacarenema, Espírito Santo. O levantamento das espécies arbustivo/arbóreas foi realizado em 80 parcelas de 5x25m, distribuídas equitativamente entre as florestas estudadas. Foram incluídos na amostragem todos os indivíduos com >3,2 cm diâmetro à altura do solo (1,30 m). Foram coletadas amostras de solo superficial (0-10 cm) em cada parcela para análise química e física. Os resultados mostraram a existência de gradiente pedológico significativo, que é influenciado pelas variações sazonais do lençol freático. As formações florestais da Restinga apresentaram diferenças significativas na riqueza de espécies, com exceção da Floresta Não Inundável em relação a Floresta Não Inundável de Transição. A Análise de Correlação Canônica (CCA) mostrou que algumas espécies apresentam sua distribuição ao longo do gradiente sob influência da drenagem, das concentrações de nutrientes e das características físicas dos solos. Entre as variáveis testadas, a inundação parece ser o fator mais limitante para o estabelecimento de espécies vegetais nas florestas de Restinga do que os atributos básicos de fertilidade do solo.

The aim of this study was to determine changes in composition, abundance and richness of species along a forest gradient with varying soils and flood regimes. The forests are located on the left bank of the lower Jucu River, in Jacarenema Natural Municipal Park, Espírito Santo. A survey of shrub/tree species was done in 80 plots, 5x25 m, equally distributed among the forests studied. We included in the sampling all individuals with >3.2 cm diameter at breast height (1.30 m). Soil samples were collected from the surface layer (0-10 cm) in each plot for chemical and physical analysis. The results indicate that a significant pedological gradient occurs, which is influenced by varying seasonal groundwater levels. Restinga forest formations showed significant differences in species richness, except for Non-flooded Forest and Non-flooded Forest Transition. The Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) showed that some species are distributed along the gradient under the combined influence of drainage, nutrient concentration and physical characteristics of the soil. Regarding the variables tested, flooding seems to be a more limiting factor for the establishment of plant species in Restinga forests than basic soil fertility attributes.

Estudiamos las variaciones florísticas de arbustos y árboles en dos sitios de un bosque semicaducifolio, bosque primario y bosque maduro, en la Reserva Forestal Mata do Paraíso, en Viçosa, Estado de Minas Gerais, Sudeste de Brasil, para analizar la similitud florística y las correlaciones entre las variables ambientales y la distribución de tres especies en estos bosques. Árboles individuales con diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) ≥ 4.8 cm. fueron muestreados en veinte parcelas de 10 x 30 m (10 parcelas en cada sitio). Las parcelas se distribuyeron sistemáticamente a intervalos de 10 m. Las variables ambientales fueron analizadas así: la abertura del dosel y características químicas y de textura del suelo. Los dos sitios de bosque mostraron diferencias evidentes en la abertura del dosel y fertilidad del suelo, factores que reflejan las diferencias florísticas y sucesionales de arbustos y árboles, revelado por la baja similitud entre estos bosques por medio de análisis de conglomerados. El análisis de correspondencia canónica (CCA) de variables ambientales y abundancia de especies indican que las especies en los bosques estudiados están distribuidas bajo una fuerte influencia de la abertura del dosel, humedad y fertilidad del suelo

The floristic variations of shrub and tree components were studied in two sites of Semideciduous Forest, initial forest and mature forest, located in the Mata do Paraíso Forest Reserve, in Viçosa, State of Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil, in order to analyze the floristic similarity and the correlations between environmental variables and the distribution of tree species in these forests. Individual trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 4.8 cm were sampled in twenty 10 x 30 m plots (10 plots in each site). The plots were distributed systematically at 10 m intervals. The environmental variables analyzed were: the canopy openness and soil chemical and texture characteristics. The two forest sites showed clear differences in the levels of canopy openness and soil fertility, factors that reflect the floristic and successional differences of the shrub and tree component, revealed by the low similarity between these forests by cluster analysis. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of environmental variables and species abundance indicated that the species in these forests studied are distributed under strong influence of canopy openness, moisture and soil fertility. Diante da crescente descaracterização do Bioma Cerrado em função da expansão da fronteira agropecuária na região central do Brasil, torna-se importante avaliar a capacidade de adaptação das espécies ao ambiente antropizado. Neste sentido, este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de estimar e comparar a densidade populacional da raposa-do-campo Lycalopex vetulus (Lund, 1842) em duas áreas com diferentes graus de alteração, pastagem e campo sujo, em Campinápolis, Mato Grosso. Para tanto, no período entre agosto a novembro de 2005, foram efetuados censos noturnos ao longo de transectos lineares, totalizando percursos de 129,8 km na área de campo sujo e 62,08 km na área de pastagem. Estimativas de densidade populacional foram geradas utilizando o programa Distance 5.0, sendo que o modelo e ajuste mais adequados aos dados foram half-normal + hermite. Foram obtidas 23 e 52 detecções de raposas-do-campo nas áreas de campo sujo e pastagem, respectivamente. A densidade populacional de raposa-do-campo na área de pastagem (D=4,28 indivíduos/km²; IC=2,69 - 6,82) foi maior que na área de campo sujo (D=1,21 indivíduos/km²; IC=0,73 - 2,01), fato que deve estar relacionado, principalmente, com a disponibilidade de alimento e redução de potenciais predadores. Por apresentar uma dieta composta principalmente de cupins, especialmente os dos gêneros Syntermes e Cornitermes, a raposa-do-campo encontra na área de pastagem uma base alimentar abundante e estável. Além disto, a simplificação ambiental, em função da implantação de pastagens acaba por reduzir, ou até mesmo eliminar, animais que são potenciais predadores de raposas-do-campo, como Chrysocyon brachyurus (Illiger, 1815), favorecendo o aumento da densidade populacional da espécie neste tipo de ambiente. Por fim, características adaptativas apresentadas pela raposa-do-campo têm permitido que esta espécie sobreviva, inclusive apresentando elevada densidade populacional, em áreas de pastagem utilizadas para a criação de gado, em Campinápolis, Mato Grosso, onde a vegetação original era Cerrado.

In face of the growing disturbance of the Cerrado biome, due to the expansion of the agricultural borders of Central Brazil, it becomes important to evaluate the adaptation capacity of animal species to the anthropized environment. Thus, this work was developed aiming to estimate and compare the population density of hoary fox Lycalopex vetulus (Lund, 1842) in two areas of Central Brazil with distinct disturbance degrees, pasture and campo sujo, a vegetation type of Cerrado. For this, during the period of August to November 2005, nocturnal sampling were done along linear transects, totaling 129.8 km in the campo sujo and 62.08 km in the pasture. A total of 23 sightings of hoary fox was obtained in campo sujo and 52 in the pasture. Estimations of population density were made using the Distance 5.0 software, which chose the half normal + hermite adjust as the model with best fit. Population density was higher in the pasture (D=4.28 individuals/km²; IC=2.69 - 6.82) than in the campo sujo (D=1.21 individuals/km²; IC=0.73 - 2.01), what is likely related, mainly, to higher availability of food and reduction of potential predators. As its diet is composed basically of termites, especially from the genera Syntermes and Cornitermes, the hoary fox find in the pasturage area an alimentary base abundant and stable. Moreover, the environmental simplification, due to the pasture implantation, end up reducing or to local extinction potential predators of the hoary fox, such as Chrysocyon brachyurus (Illiger, 1815), supporting the increase of population density of this specie in this kind of environment. Results indicate that the Cerrado endemic hoary fox is able to survive, and even proliferate, in highly modified areas of the Cerrado.
