ABSTRACT Objective: To report outcomes from the largest multicenter series of penile cancer patients undergoing video endoscopic inguinal lymphadenectomy (VEIL). Materials and Methods: Retrospective multicenter analysis. Authors of 21 centers from the Penile Cancer Collaborative Coalition-Latin America (PeC-LA) were included. All centers performed the procedure following the same previously described standardized technique. Inclusion criteria included penile cancer patients with no palpable lymph nodes and intermediate/high-risk disease and those with non-fixed palpable lymph nodes less than 4 cm in diameter. Categorical variables are shown as percentages and frequencies whereas continuous variables as mean and range. Results: From 2006 to 2020, 210 VEIL procedures were performed in 105 patients. Mean age was 58 (45-68) years old. Mean operative time was 90 minutes (60-120). Mean lymph node yield was 10 nodes (6-16). Complication rate was 15.7%, including severe complications in 1.9% of procedures. Lymphatic and skin complications were noted in 8.6 and 4.8% of patients, respectively. Histopathological analysis revealed lymph node involvement in 26.7% of patients with non-palpable nodes. Inguinal recurrence was observed in 2.8% of patients. 10y- overall survival was 74.2% and 10-y cancer specific survival was 84.8%. CSS for pN0, pN1, pN2 and pN3 were 100%, 82.4%, 72.7% and 9.1%, respectively. Conclusion: VEIL seems to offer appropriate long term oncological control with minimal morbidity. In the absence of non-invasive stratification measures such as dynamic sentinel node biopsy, VEIL emerged as the alternative for the management of non-bulky lymph nodes in penile cancer.

ABSTRACT Low-temperature storage is one of the most effective techniques to maintain the quality and durability of cut flowers. Both quality maintenance and durability are dependent on plant metabolism factors such as antioxidant system. The objective was to evaluate the effect of low-temperature on precooling and storage after harvest, on the metabolism of calla lily [Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) K. Spreng] concerning the antioxidant system, levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Therefore, different storage temperatures (4 ºC and 21 ºC) were tested as well as the effect of precooling in different periods (0 to 24 hours). It was observed that the activity of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was increased at 4 °C, as well as inflorescence durability in the commercial standard (around 12 days). At 21 °C, the content of H2O2 and MDA was higher and the visual quality reduction in the inflorescence was accelerated. Low-temperature leads to a higher activity of the enzymes of the antioxidant system (CAT and SOD) and increases postharvest longevity for calla lily. Precooling did not influence the visual quality and longevity of calla lily. Long-term exposure periods at low temperatures, with 12 and 24 hours of precooling caused stress, evidenced higher MDA levels and higher CAT activity. SOD activity was related to low temperature and shorter precooling periods resulted in better antioxidant system activity and lower MDA levels.

RESUMO O armazenamento em baixa temperatura é uma das técnicas mais eficazes para manter a qualidade e a durabilidade das flores cortadas. Tanto a manutenção da qualidade quanto a durabilidade são dependentes de fatores do metabolismo da planta como o sistema antioxidante. O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito da baixa temperatura no pré-resfriamento e armazenamento pós-colheita, no metabolismo do copo-de-leite [Zantedeschia aethiopica (L.) K. Spreng] quanto ao sistema antioxidante, níveis de peróxido de hidrogênio (H2O2) e malondialdeído (MDA). Portanto, diferentes temperaturas de armazenamento (4 ºC e 21 ºC) foram testadas assim como o efeito do pré-resfriamento em diferentes períodos (0 a 24 horas). Foi observado que a atividade da catalase (CAT) e da superóxido dismutase (SOD) aumentou no armazenamento à 4 °C, assim como a durabilidade da inflorescência no padrão comercial (aproximadamente 12 dias). À 21 °C, o teor de H2O2 e MDA foi maior e a redução da qualidade visual na inflorescência foi acelerada. A baixa temperatura leva a uma maior atividade das enzimas do sistema antioxidante (CAT e SOD) e aumenta a longevidade pós-colheita do copo-de-leite. O pré-resfriamento não influenciou na qualidade visual e longevidade do copo-de-leite. Períodos de exposição de longa duração a baixas temperaturas, com 12 e 24 horas de pré-resfriamento causaram estresse, evidenciados por maiores níveis de MDA e maior atividade de CAT. A atividade da SOD foi relacionada à baixa temperatura e períodos mais curtos de pré-resfriamento resultaram em melhor atividade do sistema antioxidante e menores níveis de MDA.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

ABSTRACT Several therapies are used for the management of subcutaneous emphysema in adults, but no reference to subcutaneous drainage using Beck’s technique has been found in pediatric patients. This is the clinical case of a 14-year-old female patient who presented a blunt force trauma that resulted from a ten-meter-high fall. On admission, she was unconscious and developed respiratory distress syndrome, thus mechanical ventilation was indicated. Seven days later, subcutaneous emphysema occurred, and a fenestrated angiocatheter was inserted using Beck’s method. At 24 hours, the emphysema was reduced in the upper chest and face, and, at 72 hours, complete resolution was observed.

RESUMEN Diversas terapias son empleadas para el manejo del enfisema subcutáneo en adultos, pero no se ha encontrado alguna referencia del drenaje subcutáneo mediante la técnica de Beck en pacientes pediátricos. Presentamos el caso clínico de una paciente de catorce años de edad con un trauma cerrado debido a una caída desde una altura de diez metros. Al ingreso, la paciente muestra pérdida de conciencia y desarrolla un síndrome de distrés respiratorio, por lo que se le indica ventilación mecánica. Siete días después se produce un enfisema subcutáneo y se realiza una inserción con angiocatéter fenestrado empleando la técnica de Beck. El enfisema en la zona superior del tórax y el rostro disminuyó a las 24 horas, y a las 72 horas la resolución fue completa.

Abstract Introduction: Mitral valvuloplasty including ring/band support is widely performed despite potential drawbacks of rings. Unsupported valvuloplasty is performed in only a few centers. This study aimed to report long-term outcomes of patients undergoing unsupported valvuloplasty for degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR) and to identify predictive factors for outcomes. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort including patients undergoing mitral valve repair for degenerative MR from 2000 to 2018. The main techniques were Wooler annuloplasty and quadrangular resection. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression models were used for statistical analysis. Results: One hundred fifty-eight patients were included (median age: 64.0 years). In-hospital mortality was 2.5%. Maximum follow-up was 19.6 years, with a median of 4.7 years (992 patient-years). Overall survival at 5, 10, and 15 years was 91.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 85.7-96.3), 87.6% (95% CI: 80.7-94.5), and 78.1% (95% CI: 65.9-90.3), respectively. The European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EuroSCORE) II was an independent predictor of late death (hazard ratio [HR] 1.42; P=0.016). Freedom from mitral reoperation at 5, 10, and 15 years was 88.1% (95% CI: 82.0-94.2), 82.4% (95% CI: 74.6-90.2), and 75.7% (95% CI: 64.1-87.3), respectively. Left atrial diameter > 56 mm was associated with late reintervention in univariate analysis (HR 1.06; P=0.049). Conclusion: Degenerative MR can be successfully treated with repair techniques without annular support, thus avoiding the technical and logistical drawbacks of ring/band implantation while maintaining good long-term results. EuroSCORE II was a risk factor for late death, and larger left atrium was associated with late reoperation.

RESUMO Neste trabalho introduzimos os conceitos de coloração total absolutamente equilibrada e composição de grafos. Provamos que para n , K ∈ ℕ, se k + 1 | n, existe um grafo k-regular conexo com n vértices que admite uma coloração total absolutamente equilibrada com no máximo Δ + 2 cores. Esse resultado mostra que existe uma relação entre a regularidade e o número de vértices do grafo que possibilita a construção de uma família de grafos regulares, denominados grafos harmônicos. Em seguida, mostramos que todo grafo harmônico de grau k pode ser obtido como composição sucessiva de grafos completos de grau k. Finalizamos, provando que os grafos harmônicos não possuem vértice de corte, fato que implica que todo grafo desta família possui conectividade de vértices κ G ≥ 2.

ABSTRACT In this work we introduce the concepts of absolute equitable total coloring and graph composition. We prove that for n , K ∈ ℕ, if k + 1 | n, there is a connected k regular graph with n vertices that admits a absolute equitable total coloring, with at most Delta + 2 colors. This result shows that there is a relationship between regularity and the number of vertices of the graph that makes it possible to build a family of regular graphs, called harmonic graphs. Then, we show that every harmonic graph of degree k can be obtained as successive composition of complete graphs of degree k. We conclude by proving that the harmonic graphs do not have a cut vertex, that implies that every graph of this family has vertex connectivity κ G ≥ 2.

Resumen Introducción. El uso de antibióticos en seres humanos, en la industria pecuaria y en las actividades veterinarias induce una presión selectiva que resulta en la colonización e infección con cepas resistentes. Objetivo. Determinar la presencia de genes de resistencia a aminoglucósidos, betalactámicos y fluoroquinolonas en cepas de Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae subsp. ozaenae y Escherichia coli, obtenidas de muestras de agua de los ríos que desembocan en la bahía de Guanabara y de muestras clínicas de hospitales de Río de Janeiro. Materiales y métodos. En la selección de las cepas resistentes obtenidas de las muestras de agua de los ríos, se emplearon medios de cultivo que contenían 32 μg/ml de cefalotina y 8 μg/ ml de gentamicina. En el caso de las muestras de especímenes clínicos, se usaron medios de cultivo que contenían 8 μg/ml de gentamicina. Las cepas se identificaron y se sometieron a pruebas de sensibilidad antimicrobiana, extracción de ADN plasmídico y pruebas de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) para detectar los genes que codifican aquellas enzimas que modifican los aminoglucósidos, las betalactamasas de espectro extendido (BLEE) y los mecanismos de resistencia a las quinolonas mediados por plásmidos. Resultados. Se encontraron perfiles de resistencia a los antimicrobianos similares en los dos grupos. En todas las bacterias obtenidas de las muestras de agua y en 90 % de las muestras clínicas, se evidenciaron bandas de plásmidos asociados con la transferencia de genes de resistencia. En las pruebas de PCR, se obtuvieron productos de amplificación de los genes de resistencia para las tres clases de antimicrobianos analizados, en el 7,4 % de las bacterias recuperadas de las muestras de agua y en el 20 % de aquellas recuperadas de las muestras clínicas. Conclusión. La detección de microorganismos con elementos genéticos que confieren resistencia a los antibióticos en ambientes como el agua, es una estrategia necesaria para prevenir y controlar la diseminación de estos agentes patógenos con potencial para infectar a humanos y a otros animales en dichos ambientes.

Abstract Introduction: The use of antibiotics in humans, animal husbandry and veterinary activities induces selective pressure leading to the colonization and infection by resistant strains. Objective: We evaluated water samples collected from rivers of the Guanabara Bay, which have suffered minor and major environmental degradation, and clinical samples of hospital origin to detect evidence of the presence of resistance genes to aminoglycosides, beta-lactam antibiotics and fluoroquinolones in strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae subsp. ozaenae and Escherichia coli. Materials and methods: For isolation of the water strains we employed culture media containing 32 μg/ml cephalotin and 8 μg/ml gentamicin. The strains from clinical materials were selected using culture media containing 8 μg/ml gentamicin. The strains were identified and subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), plasmid DNA extraction and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect genes encoding enzymes modifying aminoglycosides (EMA), extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and plasmid mechanisms of quinolone resistance (PMQR). Results: The AST of the isolates recovered from water samples showed multidrug-resistance profiles similar to those found in isolates recovered from clinical materials. All isolates from water samples and 90% of the isolates from clinical samples showed at least one plasmid band. In the PCR assays, 7.4% of the isolates recovered from water samples and 20% of those from clinical materials showed amplification products for the three antimicrobial classes. Conclusion: We believe that the detection of microorganisms presenting genetic elements in environments such as water is necessary for the prevention and control of their dissemination with potential to infect humans and other animals in eventual contact with these environments.

RESUMO O levantamento florístico das Surirellales (Bacillariophyceae) do PEFI, Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, São Paulo, SP, Brasil resultou da análise de 28 unidades amostrais. As amostras planctônicas foram coletadas com auxílio de rede de plâncton e as de perifíton pela raspagem de substratos duros ou coleta de macrófitas aquáticas submersas. O material foi oxidado e analisado aos microscópios de luz. Dois gêneros e 15 espécies foram identificados, dos quais nove são novas citações para o PEFI e são: Stenopterobia delicatissima (F.W. Lewis) L.A. Brébisson ex H. van Heurck, S. pelagica F. Hustedt, S. planctonica D. Metzeltin & H. Lange-Bertalot, S. curvula (W. Smith) K. Kramer, Surirella angusta F.T. Kützing, S. guatimalensis C.G. Ehrenberg, S. stalagma M.H. Hohn & J. Hellerman, S. splendida (C.G. Ehrenberg) F.T. Kützing e S. tenera W. Gregory.

ABSTRACT Floristic survey of order Surirellales (Bacillariophyceae) in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga (PEFI), São Paulo, SP, Brazil was based on the analysis of 28 sampling units. Plankton samples were collected with a plankton net and periphyton by scraping hard substrates and/or gathering aquatic macrophytes. Samples were oxidized and analyzed under a light microscope. Two genera and 15 species were identified. Nine taxa are cited for the first time for the PEFI area: Stenopterobia delicatissima (F.W. Lewis) L.A. Brébisson ex H. van Heurck, S. pelagica F. Hustedt, S. planctonica D. Metzeltin & H. Lange-Bertalot, S. curvula (W. Smith) K. Kramer, Surirella angusta F.T. Kützing, S. guatimalensis C.G. Ehrenberg, S. stalagma M.H. Hohn & J. Hellerman, S. splendida (C.G. Ehrenberg) F.T. Kützing and S. tenera W. Gregory.

The diterpene ent-18,19-dihydroxytrachylobane was biotransformed for the first time by Rhizopus stolonifer, and yielded the new ent-11β,18,19-trihydroxytrachylobane derivative besides the new ent-kaur-11-ene diterpenes ent-16α,18,19-trihydroxykaur-11-ene and ent-18,19-dihydroxy-16α-methoxykaur-11-ene. Their structures were determined by spectrometric methods.

Neste trabalho, foi estudado o desempenho catalítico de materiais a base de Ni, suportado em cério dopado com Zr, Pr e Nb para serem usados como anodos em células a combustível de óxido sólido (SOFC) alimentadas com combustíveis contendo metano e CO2. Os anodos foram preparados pelo método hidrotérmico, usando um teor de Ni (14% em volume) menor do que o utilizado em anodos convencionais (30% em volume). Os materiais obtidos foram caracterizados através de análises de difração de raios X, redução à temperatura programada, espectroscopia Raman e termogravimetria. Os resultados mostraram que o material contendo Zr apresentou o menor tamanho de cristalito de níquel metálico, o que levou a um maior valor de atividade inicial na reação de reforma seca do metano a 1073 K. Entretanto, o catalisador Ni/CePr apresentou a menor quantidade de carbono formada. Isto foi atribuído à maior mobilidade de oxigênio do suporte CePr, o que promove o mecanismo de remoção do carbono.

In this work, the catalytic performance of Ni supported on ceria doped with Zr, Pr and Nb used as anodes for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) operating directly on fuels containing methane and CO2 was studied. The anodes were prepared by a hydrothermal method using a Ni content (14 vol%) lower than that of a conventional SOFC anodes (30 vol%). The materials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses. The results showed that the sample containing Zr exhibited the lowest Ni crystallite size, which led to a high initial activity on dry reforming of methane at 1073 K. However, the Ni/CePr catalyst showed the lowest carbon formation. This was attributed to the higher oxygen mobility of CePr support that promotes the carbon removal mechanism.

ABSTRACT: A turbulent reacting flow in a channel with an obstacle was simulated computationally with large eddy simulation turbulence modeling and the Xi turbulent combustion model for premixed flame. The numerical model was implemented in the open source software OpenFoam. Both inert flow and reactive flow simulations were performed. In the inert flow, comparisons with velocity profile and recirculation vortex zone were performed as well as an analysis of the energy spectrum obtained numerically. The simulation with reacting flow considered a pre-mixture of propane (C 3 H 8) and air such that the equivalence ratio was equal to 0.65, with a theoretical adiabatic flame temperature of 1,800 K. The computational results were compared to experimental ones available in the literature. The equivalence ratio, inlet flow velocity, pressure, flame-holder shape and size, fuel type and turbulence intensity were taken from an experimental set up. The results shown in the present simulations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

We assessed the IgG levels anti-diphtheria (D-Ab) and T cell counts (CD4+ and CD8+) in HIV-1 infected subjects undergoing or not highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Approximately 70% of all HIV-1 patients were unprotected against diphtheria. There were no differences in D-Ab according to CD4 counts. Untreated patients had higher D-Ab (geometric mean of 0.62 IU/ml) than HAART-patients (geometric mean of 0.39 IU/ml). The data indicated the necessity of keeping all HIV-1 patients up-to-date with their vaccination.

Produtividade e qualidade da produção de citros (Citrus spp.) é largamente influencia pela adubação com potássio (K). O cloreto de potássio é a principal fonte K como fertilizante, embora outras fontes estejam disponíveis para uso agrícola e que são de interesse para culturas sensíveis ao cloreto ou cultivadas em solos com potencial para acúmulo de sais. Poucos pesquisadores avaliaram o efeito de fontes de K na produção e qualidade de frutas cítricas. Assim sendo, avaliaram-se fontes de K2SO4 e KCl nas doses de 0, 100, 200 e 300 kg ha-1 por ano de K2O na produção e qualidade de frutos em pomares de laranjeiras 'Pêra' e 'Valência'. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento fatorial do tipo 4 × 2, com quatro repetições e conduzidos no período de 2001 a 2004. A produtividade da laranjeira aumentou com a adubação potássica. O máximo rendimento econômico para a adubação com K na laranjeira 'Pêra' foi obtido na dose de 200 kg ha-1 de K2O, enquanto, na laranjeira 'Valência' foi de 270 kg ha-1 de K2O. As diferenças foram atribuídas ao maior nível de produção e exportação de K pelos frutos de 'Valência'. A massa do fruto também aumentou com o incremento nas doses de K o que determinou as perdas de sólidos solúveis totais no suco. Esta foi correlacionada com as concentrações de K nas folhas da laranjeira 'Valência' (r = 0,76; p < 0,05). A concentração de Ca, Mg e B nas folhas diminuíram com as doses de K. A concentração de Cl nas folhas aumentou até 440 mg kg-1 com o incremento nas doses de KCl, entretanto, não foram observados efeitos adversos na produção e na qualidade dos frutos.

Fruit yield and quality of citrus trees (Citrus spp.) is markedly affected by potassium (K) fertilization. Potassium chloride is the major source of K, even though other sources are also available for agricultural use when crops are sensitive to chloride or where potential for accumulation of salts in soils exists. Only few studies addressed the effect of K sources on yield and quality of citrus fruits. Therefore, the present study was conducted to evaluate K2SO4 and KCl fertilizer sources at 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1 per year K2O on fruit yield and quality of 'Pêra' and 'Valencia' sweet orange trees in the field. The experiments were carried out in a 4 × 2 factorial design under randomized complete blocks, with four replicates from 2001 to 2004. Fruit yield increased with increased K fertilization. Nutrient rate for maximum economic yield of 'Pêra' was 200 kg ha-1 of K2O and for 'Valencia', 270 kg ha-1 of K2O. Differences were attributed to higher production and K exportation by fruits of 'Valencia'. Fruit mass also increased with increased K fertilization what decreased total soluble solids in juice, and which correlated with leaf K concentrations for 'Valencia' (r = 0.76; p < 0.05). Leaf Ca, Mg and B concentrations decreased with K rates. Additionally, leaf Cl increased up to 440 mg kg-1 with KCl rates, even though no negative effects occurred either on fruit yield or quality of trees.

Pau-santo (Kielmeyera coriacea) é a espécie fornecedora de cortiça mais importante do Cerrado, porém apresenta alto grau de polimorfismo entre os indivíduos, o que pode afetar de forma distinta os testes de germinação de sementes e emergência de plântulas. Diante disso, os objetivos foram correlacionar características de germinação de sementes com a emergência de plântulas da espécie e quantificar o impacto da variabilidade entre os indivíduos na correlação e no teste de significância. Nos testes de germinação e emergência, o delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com sete tratamentos correspondentes aos indivíduos, com três repetições em parcelas compostas de 32 sementes. Dois critérios distintos de avaliação foram adotados, o de protrusão da radícula, no teste de germinação, e de plântula normal, no teste de emergência. Os indivíduos de K. coriacea apresentaram alta capacidade de germinação e emergência, com alto grau de incerteza, baixa sincronia e espalhamento em relação ao tempo médio, embora em ambos os testes os indivíduos tenham apresentado classificação distinta quanto a essas características. As correlações entre medidas de germinação e emergência com dados originais e com resíduos foram diferentes, mostrando que a variabilidade intrínseca do indivíduo interfere no resultado da medida. A significância associada à correlação apenas indicou que o valor encontrado não é zero e, portanto, não pode ser interpretado como relevante na associação entre as características da espécie.

Kielmeyera coriacea is the most important cork supplying species of the Brazilian Savannah but it shows a high degree of individual polymorphism which can affect seed germination tests and seedling emergence. The objectives of this study were to correlate seed germination characteristics with seedling emergence and quantify the impact of individual variability in the correlation and significance tests. A randomized block design was used in the germination and emergence tests with seven treatments corresponding to the individuals and three plot replications with 32 seeds each. Two distinct evaluation criteria were adopted: radicle protrusion in the germination test and a normal seedlings in the emergence test. K. coriacea individuals presented high germination and emergence capacities, with a high degree of uncertainty, low synchronization and spread in relation to average time, although in both tests the individuals showed a distinct classification with regards to these characteristics. The correlations between germination and emergence measurements with original data and with residuals were different, showing that the individual's intrinsic variability interferes with the measurement result. The significance associated with the correlation only indicated that the value found is not zero and, therefore, cannot be interpreted as being important in the association among the species characteristics.
