RESUMO: Descreve-se um caso de rinite por Exserohilum rostratum em um caprino, sem raça definida, fêmea, três anos, com diminuição do apetite, dispneia e deformidade facial, com evolução de aproximadamente dois meses. Durante a necropsia, observou-se que na cavidade nasal havia área focal extensa, amarelo acastanhada, irregular, ulcerada e friável, que drenava secreção purulenta acometendo o vestíbulo nasal e estendendo-se da porção caudal da concha dorsal, associada a obstrução do meato nasal, destruição do septo nasal e osso nasal palatino e vômer. Histologicamente, a lesão foi caracterizada como rinite e osteomielite piogranulomatosa e necrosante, multifocal a coalescente, aguda, crônica, associada a uma miríade de estruturas fúngicas. Morfologicamente, as hifas foram caracterizadas por paredes finas, discretamente tortuosas e septadas medindo 2 a 6 μm de diâmetro. Observamos algumas cadeias de conídios ou grupos com 8 a 10 μm de diâmetro e clamidoconídios pigmentados medindo de 7,5 a 15 μm de diâmetro. Foram positivos na histoquímica especial de Fontana Masson, Nitrato de Metenamina de Prata de Grocott e Ácido Periódico de Schiff. O agente foi determinado por meio de isolamento microbiológico associado à identificação molecular. A rinite piogranulomatosa causada por E. rostratum em caprinos é inédita, sendo o primeiro isolamento do agente em animais no Brasil e o primeiro caso de feo-hifomicose nasal na espécie caprina.

ABSTRACT: We described a case of rhinitis case caused by Exserohilum rostratum in a 3-year-old, mixed breed, afemale goat, presenting with decreased appetite, dyspnea, and face deformity, with evolution of approximately 2 months. Necropsy revealed an extensive brownish yellow, irregular, ulcerated, and friable focal lesion in the nasal cavity. Purulent secretion drained from the lesion, affecting the nasal vestibule and extending the caudal portion of the dorsal concha, associated with nasal meatus obstruction, destruction of the nasal septum, and nasal bone palatine and vomer. Histologically, the lesion was characterized as rhinitis and pyogranulomatous and necrotizing osteomyelitis (multifocal to coalescent, sharp, and chronic) and associated with a myriad of fungal structures. Morphologically, the hyphae were characterized by thin, slightly tortuous, and rarely septate walls (2-6 μm diameter), multiple chains of individual conidia or in groups (8-10 μm diameter), and pigmented chlamydoconidia (7.5-15 μm diameter). They showed positive results for the special histochemical techniques such as Fontana Masson, methenamine silver nitrate by Grocott, and periodic acid by Schiff. E. rostratum was identified as the causative agent using microbiological isolation associated with molecular identification. Pyrogranulomatous rhinitis caused by E. rostratum in goats is unprecedented, being the first isolation of the agent in animals in Brazil and the first case of nasal phaeohyphomycosis in the goats.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to assess the effect of progressive neutralization on the antimicrobial properties against bacteria and yeasts of wood vinegar obtained from the pyrolysis of Eucalyptus urograndis (clone I144) wood. Wood samples were carbonized at a heating rate of 0.9 °C min-1 until a final temperature of 450 °C, totalizing 8 hours of carbonization. The raw pyrolysis liquids were left to settle, and the aqueous fraction was separated. Then, the aqueous fraction (raw wood vinegar - WV) was purified to yield the WV. WV samples were collected and neutralized from pH 2.5 until 7.5 (2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5, by adding NaOH solution. Through the broth microdilution method, the antimicrobial effect of the neutralized samples at each pH was assessed on Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Salmonella enteritidis (ATCC 13076), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus agalactiae (CEPA CLINICA), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (and fungicidal) concentrations were determined through in vitro technics. Results were subjected to logarithmic regression analysis, and statistical models were fitted for each microorganism in the assessed pH range; as pH increased, a progressive decrease in the CIM increased, demanding higher concentrations of WV to inhibit microbial growth. The more resistant strains were S. aureus and S. agalactiae, which required an increase in WV concentration from a minimum of 6.25% at pH 2.5 to reaching 50% at pH 6.0. When at pH 7.0, both strains were not inhibited even at 50% (the highest concentration evaluated in the study). In contrast, C. albicans proved to be the most sensitive strain, starting from 3.12% EP at pH 2.5 and requiring only 25% for inhibition at pH 7.0. The behavior of P. aeruginosa and S. enteritidis followed the pattern of C. albicans, differing only at pH 7.0, where they required 50% of EP. As observed, even at neutral and slightly alkaline pH, the inhibitory activity of EP on microbial growth was maintained to some extent. Nevertheless, even when neutral and slightly alkaline pH values are reached, the inhibitory activity remains at a certain level. Higher pH values of the WV were associated with lower antimicrobial activity. However, its activity remained even at neutral and slightly alkaline pH values.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da neutralização progressiva na atividade antimicrobiana do extrato pirolenhoso (EP) da madeira do híbrido Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis (clone I144). Amostras de madeira foram carbonizadas a uma taxa de aquecimento de 0.9 °C min-1 até a temperatura final de 450 °C, perfazendo 8 horas de carbonização. Os líquidos brutos da carbonização foram deixados em repouso e a fração aquosa foi separada. A fração aquosa correspondente ao EP bruto foi destilada obtendo o EP purificado. Alíquotas de EP purificado foram progressivamente neutralizadas do pH 2.5 até 7.5, respectivamente, 2,5, 3,0, 3,5, 4,0, 4,5, 5,0, 5,5, 6,0, 6,5, 7,0, e 7,5, por meio da adição de NaOH. Com o método da micro-diluição em caldo, o efeito antimicrobiano das amostras neutralizadas em cada pH foi avaliado contra Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Salmonella enteritidis (ATCC 13076), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Streptococcus agalactiae (CEPA CLINICA) e Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). As concentrações inibitórias mínimas e as concentrações bactericida e fungicida mínimas foram determinadas por técnicas in vitro. Os resultados foram analisados por regressão logarítmica e modelos estatísticos foram ajustados para cada microrganismo em cada pH. Na determinação da CIM, foi detectada uma perda progressiva da atividade antimicrobiana do EP com a neutralização, exigindo, conforme o pH caminhava para 7.0, concentrações mais elevadas de EP para resultar em inibição. As cepas que demonstraram maior resistência foram S. aureus e S. agalactiae. Esses microrganismos partiram da exigência de concentrações de 6.25% de EP, em pH inicial (2.5), e chegaram a requerer 50% em pH 6.0. Quando em pH 7.0, ambas as cepas não foram inibidas nem a 50% (maior concentração avaliada no estudo). Em contrapartida, C. albicans se mostrou a cepa mais sensível, partindo de 3.12% de EP, em pH de 2.5, e exigindo apenas 25% para inibição em pH 7.0. O comportamento de P. aeruginosa e S. enteritidis acompanhou o padrão da C. albicans, diferenciando-se apenas em pH 7.0, onde exigiram 50% de EP. Como observado, mesmo em pH neutro e ligeiramente alcalino, a atividade inibitória do EP ao crescimento microbiano se manteve em certa extensão.

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze perceptions about black women in science, based on conversations about the film Hidden Figures. The movie portrays the trajectory of three black female NASA scientists, in the context of racial segregation in the USA in the 1960s. Through Content Analysis, we investigate comments on Letterboxd, in order to identify meanings produced by viewers. The results indicate the predominance of comments that celebrate the leading role of black women, even though they reinforce the appeal to the individual merit in the face of structural asymmetries. There are also criticisms of the maintenance of conservative stereotypes, such as the “white savior”. These conversations reveal intersectional crossings in the public perception of science and the relevance of more diverse media representations of scientific activity in terms of gender and race.

Resumen: En este artículo analizamos las percepciones sobre las mujeres negras en la ciencia, a partir de conversaciones sobre la película Figuras Ocultas. La película retrata la trayectoria de tres científicas negras de la NASA, en el contexto de la segregación racial en los Estados Unidos en la década de 1960. Mediante el Análisis de Contenido, investigamos los comentarios en Letterboxd con el fin de identificar los significados producidos por los espectadores. Los resultados indican el predominio de comentarios que celebran el papel protagónico de la mujer negra, aunque refuerzan la apelación al mérito individual ante las asimetrías estructurales. También hay críticas al mantenimiento de estereotipos conservadores, como el del “salvador blanco”. Estas conversaciones revelan cruces interseccionales en la percepción pública de la ciencia y la relevancia de representaciones mediáticas más diversas de la actividad científica en términos de género y raza.

Resumo: Neste artigo, analisamos percepções acerca de mulheres negras na ciência a partir das conversações sobre o filme Estrelas Além do Tempo. A produção retrata a trajetória de três cientistas negras da NASA, no contexto de segregação racial dos EUA nos anos 1960. Por meio da Análise de Conteúdo, investigamos comentários na rede social Letterboxd com o objetivo de identificar sentidos articulados pelos espectadores. Os resultados indicam o predomínio de comentários que celebram o protagonismo de mulheres negras, porém reforçam o apelo ao mérito individual frente a assimetrias estruturais. Há ainda críticas à manutenção de estereótipos conservadores, como o “salvador branco”. Tais conversações desvelam atravessamentos interseccionais na percepção pública da ciência e a importância de representações midiáticas mais diversas da atividade científica em termos de gênero e raça.

Introdução: A alopecia frontal fibrosante (AFF) é uma cicatriz linfocítica, com queda de cabelo pela linha de implantação frontal do couro cabeludo e outras áreas do corpo. Drogas tópicas e sistêmicas, como casos o MTX, não controlam a atividade da doença na maioria dos casos, a necessidade de novas terapias. Objetivo: Avaliar a diligência da microinfusão de metotrexato em AFF. Métodos: Ensaio clínico prospectivo, controlador, realizado com 17 voluntários com 1 diagnóstico clínico e histológico de AFF. As aplicações de MTX por MMP® (método de microinfusão de pele) foram feitas a cada 30 dias, num total de 3 aplicações, na direita da área de alopecia; a outra metade serviu como controle.medidas frontais glalares e parciais, dermatoscópicas, índice de avaliação externa dos olhos, a percepção do plano dos sinais do paciente (LPPAI). Hemograma total e testes de função hepática também foram médios. Resultados: Houve uma redução significativa nas medidas fronto-glabela e frontal temporo-parietal no local tratado, enquanto no local nãou a AAF aumentou. A paciente refere melhora do prurido e descamação, mas não da queda de cabelo e eritema local. A das fotos dermatoscópicas e a análise do LPPAI não são relevantes. Cerca de 9 participantes e todos nós não resultaram em 5% dos resultados com nenhum resultado de nenhum dos exames.Conclusão: A aplicação de MTX por MMP® melhorou os sintomas associados à AFF e as medidas fronto-glabela e fronto-parietal.

Fotos de dermatoscopia foram analisadas por avaliadores cegos e externos com percepção de sinais e sintomas do paciente e o Índice de Atividade do Líquen Planopilar (LPPAI). Hemograma total e testes de função hepática também foram medidos. Resultados: Houve redução significativa nas medidas frontoglabela e frontal temporoparietal no local tratado, enquanto no não tratado a AAF aumentou. Houve melhora do prurido e descamação, mas não da queda de cabelo e eritema local. A análise das fotos dermatoscópicas e o cálculo do LPPAI não mostraram alterações relevantes. Cerca de 95% dos participantes ficaram satisfeitos ou muito satisfeitos com os resultados e nenhum deles teve alteração nos resultados dos exames laboratoriais. Conclusão: A aplicação de MTX por MMP® melhorou os sintomas associados à AFF e as medidas frontoglabela e frontoparietal. Esta técnica mostrou-se segura e bem tolerada.

ABSTRACT: Objective To identify the profile of vacancies for nurses disseminated through social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method Quantitative, descriptive and exploratory document-based study based on facebook, instagram and twitter publications through the use of hashtags: facebook (#vacancies #nursing and #employment #nurse), instagram (#vacanciesnurse y and #vacancies) and on twitter (#vacancies and #nurse), from March 01 to 22, 2021. Initially, 6,173 publications were found, of which 117 were selected after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analysis. Results The predominant information in the publications was arranged in five categories, which were named with a hashtag: #nursespecialists, #minimumrequirements, #employment bond, #remuneration and #businessday. The Southeast was the region that most required specialists, followed by the Northeast and the South. Regarding the minimum requirements, 81.60% of the publications had requirements, among which professional experience and having a postgraduate degree were the most present. The most evident employment relationship was the effective contract. The salary range was between 4.1 and 5 minimum wages. And the weekly workload had the highest percentage in 24 hours and equal to or greater than 40 hours. Conclusion Knowing the scenario of hiring nurses in times of coronavirus shows an already announced trend, which is the shortage of qualified professionals to work in the labor market, in addition to the devaluing conditions that affect nursing work.

RESUMEN: Objetivo: Identificar el perfil de las vacantes para enfermeras (os) divulgadas a través de las redes sociales durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Método: Estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y exploratorio, de base documental a partir de publicaciones de facebook, instagram y twitter a través del uso de hashtags: facebook (#vacantes #enfermería y #empleo #enfermero), instagram (#vagaenfermero y #vacantes) y en twitter (#vacante y #enfermero) del 1 al 22 de marzo de 2021. Inicialmente se encontraron 6.173 publicaciones de las cuales 117 fueron seleccionadas tras aplicación de los criterios de inclusión y exclusión y análisis. Resultados: Las informaciones predominantes en las publicaciones fueron dispuestas en cinco categorías, que fueron nombradas con un hashtag: #enfermerospecialistas, #requisitosmínimos, #vínculolaboral, #remuneración y #jornadatrabajo. El Sudeste fue la región que más requirió especialistas, seguido del Nordeste y Sur. En cuanto a los requisitos mínimos, 81,60% de las publicaciones presentaron requisitos, entre estos la experiencia profesional y poseer posgrado fueron las más presentes. El vínculo laboral más evidente fue el contrato efectivo. El rango salarial estaba entre 4,1 y 5 salarios mínimos. Y la carga horaria semanal presentó el mayor porcentaje en 24 horas e igual o superior a 40 horas. Conclusión: Conocer el escenario de contratación de enfermeros en tiempos de coronavirus, evidencia una tendencia ya anunciada, que es la escasez de profesionales calificados para la actuación en el mercado de trabajo, además de las condiciones devaluadoras que concierne el trabajo de enfermería.

Abstract The aim of this work was to determine the total phenolic content and evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial, photoprotective and cytotoxic properties of corn silk ethanol extract prepared from corn silk that was air-dried at room temperature. Corn silk ethanol extract has a high content of phenolic compounds. The concentrations of ethanol extract required to produce 50% of maximal effect (EC50) in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays were 489.0 and 166.1 µg/mL respectively, indicating low activity when compared to the positive control. The ethanolic extract of corn silk showed antibacterial activity, mainly on Gram-positive bacteria. The in vitro sun protection factor (SPF) of the ethanolic extract of corn silk incorporated into sunscreen UVA-UVB 5% gel with Pemulen TR-1® was evaluated for the first time. A relative increase in SPF efficacy was observed for the extract when the sunscreen was incorporated. The ethanolic extract of corn silk and the gel were considered non-cytotoxic. The corn silk ethanolic extract was characterized using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS). Eleven compounds including flavonoids, coumaric acid derivatives, terpenoid, hydroxycinnamic acid derivative and quinic acid derivative were suggested based on their accurate mass and MS/MS spectra.

Abstract Fish local knowledge is important to recognize species and contribute to conservation and management strategies. Thus, our aim was to provide diagnostic information for the rapid identification of Mugilidae species in Caeté-Taperaçu Extractive Reserve in Bragança (PA) in northern Brazil. A total of 28 fishers were interviewed using semi-structured questionnaires. Most of the interviewees have lived in their resident village since birth and have been involved in artisanal fishers for at least 12 years. Eight generic folk taxa were identified, including ‘tainha’, which was the vernacular name most used to define the Mugil genus. Each scientific species had at least two folk generic taxa and one species. Mugil curema, M. rubrioculus, and M. trichodon were all included in the same ethnospecies, ‘tainha chata’. Most of the scientific species were referred to at least once as the ethnospecies ‘caica’, this name was applied most often to Mugil brevirostris, which is the smallest species found in northern Brazil. The principal characteristics used by the fishers were morphological traits, however, some behavioral characteristics were also taken into account. These findings should contribute to the elaboration of ethnotaxonomic keys that facilitate the rapid identification of Mugil harvested by the region’s artisanal and industrial fisheries.

Resumo O conhecimento local sobre peixes é importante para reconhecer espécies e contribui para estratégias de conservação e manejo. Nosso objetivo foi fornecer informações diagnósticas para a rápida identificação das espécies de Mugilidae da região da Reserva Extrativista Marinha Caeté Taperaçu (PA), Norte do Brasil. Um total de 28 pescadores foi entrevistado por meio de questionários semiestruturados. A maioria dos entrevistados vive na sua aldeia residente desde o nascimento e está envolvida na pesca artesanal há pelo menos 12 anos. Oito táxons populares genéricos foram identificados por esses pescadores, incluindo ‘tainha’, que era o nome vernacular mais usado para definir o gênero Mugil. Cada espécie científica tinha pelo menos dois táxons genéricos populares e uma espécie. Mugil curema, M. rubrioculus e M. trichodon foram todos incluídos na mesma etnoespécie, ‘tainha chata’. A maioria das espécies científicas foi referida pelo menos uma vez como etnoespécie ‘caica’, este nome foi aplicado mais frequentemente a Mugil brevirostris, que é a menor espécie encontrada no Norte do Brasil. As principais características utilizadas pelos pescadores foram os traços morfológicos, porém, algumas características comportamentais também foram levadas em consideração. Esses achados devem contribuir para a elaboração de chaves etnotaxonômicas que facilitem a rápida identificação de Mugil capturadas pela pesca artesanal e industrial da região.

Resumo Objetivo Nosso estudo avaliou os efeitos de eventos climáticos extremos e condições ambientais sobre os grupos tróficos (herbívoros e onívoros) de copépodes na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Métodos O zooplâncton foi coletado e copépodes e rotíferos foram analisados em nove ambientes da planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná, durante os anos de 2000 e 2010, períodos que ocorreram os eventos climáticos La Niña (seca) e El Niño (cheia), respectivamente. Resultados Os resultados sugerem que em períodos de seca extrema (La Niña) as variáveis associadas a produtividade atuem como forças determinantes sobre a abundância de grupos tróficos de copépodes devido a contração dos ecossistemas aquáticos. As respostas entre as abundâncias dos grupos tróficos divergem apesar de estarem associados a produtividade do sistema, uma vez que a abundância de herbívoros está associada a clorofila-a e ao fósforo total e dos onívoros à abundância de rotíferos. No período de cheia extrema (El Niño) não foi encontrada relação significativa entre as variáveis ambientais e grupos tróficos. Conclusões Acredita-se que em períodos de extrema seca as variáveis associadas à produtividade atuam como forças determinantes na abundância de grupos tróficos de copépodes devido à contração dos ecossistemas aquáticos. De acordo com os resultados encontrados, sugere-se que outros trabalhos sejam realizados com maior número de eventos extremos para corroborar com nossos resultados e, ainda para extrapolar para outras comunidades aquáticas.

Abstract Aim Our study evaluated the effects of extreme weather events and environmental conditions on the trophic groups of copepods (herbivores and omnivores) in the upper Paraná River floodplain. Methods The zooplankton were collected and Copepods and Rotifers were analyzed in nine environments of the upper Paraná River floodplain during 2000 and 2010, during which time the La Niña (drought) and El Niño (flood) climatic events occurred, respectively. Results The results suggest that in periods of extreme drought productivity-related variables act as determining forces on abundance of copepod trophic groups due to the contraction of aquatic ecosystems. Although the abundance of trophic groups is associated with system productivity, the responses between them differ, since herbivore abundance was associated with chlorophyll-a and total phosphorus and omnivores with rotifer abundance. In extreme flood (El Niño), no significant relationship was found between environmental variables and any trophic group. Conclusions In general, it is believed that in periods of extreme drought the variables associated with productivity act as determining forces on the abundance of trophic groups of copepods due to the contraction of aquatic ecosystems. According to the results found, it is suggested that other works be carried out with a greater number of extreme events to corroborate our results and, and also to extrapolate to other aquatic communities.

ABSTRACT Background: We evaluated different technological approaches and anti-D clones to propose the most appropriate serologic strategy in detecting the largest numbers of D variants in blood donors. Methods: We selected 101 samples from Brazilian blood donors with different expressions of D in our donor routine. The tests were performed in immediate spin (IS) with eleven commercially available anti-D reagents in a tube and microplate. The D confirmatory tests for the presence of weak D included the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT) in a tube, gel and solid-phase red blood cell adherence (SPRCA). All DNA samples were extracted from peripheral blood and the D variants were classified using different molecular assays. Results: The RHD variants identified by molecular analysis included weak D types (1, 2, 3, 11 and 38) and partial Ds (DAR1.2, DAR1, DAR3.1, DAU0, DAU2, DAU4, DAU5, DAU6, DMH and DVII). The monoclonal-monoclonal blend RUM-1/MS26 was the best anti-D reagent used in detecting the D antigen in the IS phase in a tube, reacting with 83.2% of the D variants, while the anti-D blend D175 + 415 was the best monoclonal antibody (MoAb) used in a microplate to minimize the need for an IAT, reacting with 83.2% of the D variants. The D confirmatory tests using SPRCA showed a reactivity (3 - 4+) with 100% of the D variant samples tested. Conclusion: Our results show that, even using sensitive methods and MoAbs to ensure the accurate assignment of the D antigen, at least 17% of our donor samples need a confirmatory D test in order to avoid alloimmunization in D-negative patients.

Antimicrobial and antitumor activities of resveratrol, a compound found mainly in grapes, have already been demonstrated. However, its low bioavailability is a limiting factor for therapeutic application. Polymeric micelles can be an approach to solve this problem since they can encapsulate hydrophobic substances. We developed and characterized micellar formulations containing resveratrol and evaluated their cytotoxic and antimicrobial effects. The formulations were prepared by the cold dispersion method with different concentrations of F127 (5 or 10% w/w) and resveratrol (500 or 5000 µM). The formulations were characterized according to size, polydispersity index, pH, encapsulation rate and in vitro release. Cytotoxic effect was evaluated on a bladder cancer cell line and antimicrobial effect was evaluated on E. coli, S. aureus and C. albicans. One of the formulations (10% w/w of F127 and 5000 µM of resveratrol) was a monodispersed solution with high encapsulation rate, thus it was chosen for the cytotoxicity and antimicrobial assays. MS- 10+RES-3 was able to preserve the antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity of resveratrol. This is the first study that evaluated antimicrobial potential and cytotoxicity of micelles containing resveratrol on bladder cancer cells and the results showed that micellar nanostructures could ensure the maintenance of the biological activity of resveratrol.

Due to the increase of bacterial resistance, the search for new antibiotics is necessary and the medicinal plants represent its most important source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial property of extract and fractions from Protium spruceanum leaves, against pathogenic bacteria. By means of diffusion and microdilution assays, the crude extract was active against the nine bacteria tested being the hydromethanolic fraction the most active. During phytochemical procedures, procyanidin (1) and catechin (2) were identified as the main antibacterial constituents of this fraction. In silico results obtained using PASSonline tool indicated 1 and 2 as having good potential to interact with different targets of currently used antibiotics. These results no indicated potential to none DNA effect and indicated the cell wall as mainly target. Electrophoresis result supported that had no DNA damage. Cell wall damage was confirmed by propidium iodide test that showed increased membrane permeability and by cell surface deformations observed in scanning electronic microscopy. The in vitro assays together with the in silico prediction results establish the potential of P. spruceanum as source of antibacterial compounds that acts on important bacterial targets. These results contribute to the development of natural substances against pathogenic bacteria and to discovery of new antibiotics.

Abstract In this study, we evaluated the physicochemical properties (PCP; radiopacity, flow, pH, and solubility) and the quality of root canal filling provided by an experimental industrialized paste (EP), with the same active ingredients as those of the Guedes Pinto paste, compared with the Vitapex® paste. PCP were analyzed according to the ANSI/ADA laboratory testing methods for endodontic filling and sealing materials. To analyze filling capacity, 120 artificial primary teeth (60 maxillary incisors [MIs] and 60 mandibulary molars [MMs]) were endodontically treated. The teeth were divided into eight groups based on the dental group (MIs or MMs), filling material (Vitapex® or EP), and insertion method (syringe or lentulo). The Image J® software was used to analyze the initial an final digital radiographies of each tooth, measuring and comparing root canal and void areas. The percentage of filling failure areas was obtained. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey test of mean comparison. Regarding PCP, both pastes presented results according the ANSI/ADA standards. Flow capacity: Vitapex: 19.6 mm, EP: 25 mm (p < 0.01); radiopacity: Vitapex: 4.47 mmAl, EP: 6.06 mmAl (p < 0.01); pH after 28 days: Vitapex: 7.79, EP: 8.19 (p = 0.12); and solubility after 28 days: Vitapex: 2.68%, EP: 2.89% (p > 0.05). Regarding filling capacity analysis, EP demonstrated 12.5% of failure against 31.5% of Vitapex (p < 0.01). Compared to Vitapex, EP presented statistically significantly better results in flow, radiopacity, pH, and filling capacity. Molars presented more filling failures than incisors. The insertion method using a syringe and a thin tip was significantly better than that using Lentulo spiral carriers.

Abstract Background: sarcopenic obesity (SO) decreases functional capacity, favors loss of autonomy, and is associated with increased mortality in the elderly. The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity differs according to the chosen diagnostic method and/or the population studied. Objective: to identify sarcopenic obesity in community-dwelling elderly women using different diagnostic methods. Methods: this is a cross-sectional study involving 138 elderly women enrolled in an Open University of the Third Age. Sarcopenia was defined according to three criteria a skeletal muscle index (SMI) ≤ 6.42 kg/m2; reduced muscle strength, defined by handgrip strength (HS) < 20 kg/f; and reduced physical performance, determined by a usual gait speed (GS) < 0.8 m/s. Obesity was diagnosed when body mass index (BMI) > 28 kg/m2, waist circumference (WC) > 88 cm2, total body fat percentage (TBF%) determined by bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) ≥ 38%, and value for triceps skinfold (TS) ≥ 85th percentile. Sarcopenic obesity is the coexistence of sarcopenia and obesity. Results: the prevalence of sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia was 14.5% and 3.6%, respectively. The highest prevalence of obesity was found using WC (69.6%) and TBF% (52.9%) (p < 0.001). The highest prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was found using TBF% (9.4%) and WC (6.5%) (p < 0.001). Sarcopenic obesity according to BMI was only 0.7%. Conclusion: the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was high and depended on the diagnostic criteria applied. The association of TBF% with the diagnosis of sarcopenia was the method that identified the highest prevalence of sarcopenic obesity.

Resumen Antecedentes: la obesidad sarcopénica (SO) disminuye la capacidad funcional, favorece la pérdida de autonomía y se asocia a mayor mortalidad en los ancianos. La prevalencia de la obesidad sarcopénica difiere según el método de diagnóstico elegido y/o la población estudiada. Objetivo: identificar la obesidad sarcopénica en mujeres ancianas que viven en la comunidad utilizando diferentes métodos de diagnóstico. Métodos: este es un estudio transversal en el que participaron 138 mujeres ancianas inscritas en una Universidad Abierta de la Tercera Edad. La sarcopenia se definió de acuerdo con tres criterios: un índice de músculo esquelético (SMI) ≤ 6.42 kg/m2; fuerza muscular reducida, definida por una fuerza de empuñadura (HS) < 20 kg/f, y rendimiento físico reducido, determinado por una velocidad de marcha habitual (GS) < 0,8 m/s. La obesidad se diagnosticó si: índice de masa corporal (IMC) > 28 kg/m2, perímetro de la cintura (WC) > 88 cm2, porcentaje de grasa corporal total (TBF%) determinado por análisis de impedancia bioeléctrica (BIA) ≥ 38%, y valor de pliegue cutáneo del tríceps (TS) ≥ percentil 85. La obesidad sarcopénica es la coexistencia de sarcopenia y obesidad. Resultados: la prevalencia de la sarcopenia y la sarcopenia severa fue del 14,5% y 3,6%, respectivamente. La mayor prevalencia de obesidad se encontró mediante el WC (69,6%) y el porcentaje de TBF (52,9%) (p < 0,001). La prevalencia más alta de obesidad sarcopénica se encontró utilizando el % de TBF (9,4%) y el WC (6,5%) (p < 0,001). La obesidad sarcopénica según el IMC fue solo del 0,7%. Conclusión: la prevalencia de la obesidad sarcopénica fue alta y dependió de los criterios diagnósticos aplicados. La asociación del TBF% con el diagnóstico de sarcopenia fue el método que identificó la prevalencia más alta de obesidad sarcopénica.

RESUMO Dentre os parâmetros do processo de carbonização, a taxa de aquecimento é um dos mais importantes. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influência de diferentes taxas de aquecimento na composição química do extrato pirolenhoso (EP) de duas espécies de madeira. Discos secos de madeira de Eucalyptus grandis e Mimosa tenuiflora foram utilizados como matéria prima. As carbonizações foram conduzidas em mufla de laboratório em três taxas de aquecimento (0,7, 1,0 e 1,4 °C min-1), com 10 repetições para cada taxa de aquecimento, atingindo temperatura final de 450 °C. Rendimentos gravimétricos em carvão, líquidos e gases de foram obtidas para todas as carbonizações. Os respectivos líquidos brutos da pirólise para cada espécie e taxa de aquecimento foram bidestilados, obtendo-se as amostras de EP purificado. As amostras foram extraídas com acetato de etila e a fração orgânica foi analisada por cromatografia gasosa/espectrometria de massas obtendo-se dados qualitativos e semi-quantitativos. Um total de 57 e 42 compostos químicos foram identificados nos EP’s de Eucalyptus e Mimosa, respectivamente, divididos nos principais grupos: álcoois, cetonas, furanos, piranos e compostos fenólicos. Para as duas espécies, altas taxas de aquecimento favorecem a formação de furanos e piranos e acarretam baixas concentrações de compostos fenólicos.

ABSTRACT Among the parameters used in the biomass carbonization process, the heating rate is one of the most important. The objective of the present work was to assess the influence of different heating rates on the chemical composition of wood vinegar (WV) from two wood species. Dried disks of Eucalyptus grandis and Mimosa tenuiflora wood were used as raw material. Carbonization runs were carried out in a laboratory muffle furnace at three heating rates (0.7, 1.0 and 1.4 °C/min), with 10 runs at each heating rate, reaching 450 °C. Yields of charcoal, pyrolysis liquids and gases were determined for all carbonization conditions. Crude pyrolysis liquid from each wood species and each heating rate was bi-distilled, yielding purified WV samples. These samples were extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic fraction was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to obtain qualitative and semi-quantitative data. Results showed that lower heating rates produce higher yields of charcoal, while higher heating rates lead to higher yields of pyrolysis liquids and gases. Totals of 57 and 42 chemical compounds were identified in the WV of Eucalyptus and Mimosa, respectively, divided into the following groups: alcohols, ketones, furans and pyrans, and phenolic compounds. In general, higher heating rates led to greater contents of furans and pyrans and lower concentrations of phenolic compounds.
