Abstract This study analyzed the periodontal clinical data of individuals with a history of COVID-19 treated in a dental school during the pandemic in 2021 before vaccination. Methods: This analysis included individuals older than 18 years with no history of systemic disorders other than systemic arterial hypertension. Individuals who had COVID-19 were classified according to the World Health Organization as asymptomatic, with mild, moderate, severe, or critical symptoms. Results: A total of 95 individuals were evaluated, which included 24 with a history of COVID-19. Seventeen percent had been asymptomatic, 21% had mild, 25% moderate, 21% severe, and 17% critical symptoms, including intubation. Individuals with no history of COVID-19 presented significantly lower measurements of probing depth (p=0.003; Mann-Whitney test) and clinical attachment level (p=0.002) compared to individuals with a history of COVID-19. A significant negative association was found between bleeding on probing and the severity of characteristics of COVID-19 (rho= -0.233; p=0.023). Conversely, positive associations between the values of probing depth (rho= 0.292; p=0.004) and mean clinical attachment level (rho= 0.300; p=0.003) and the characteristics of COVID-19 were found. Conclusions: The periodontal data shows that patients who had COVID-19 before vaccination may present a worse periodontal status when compared to patients in the same clinical setting with no history of COVID-19. However, a more extensive study should confirm it with more participants.

Resumo Este estudo analisou os dados clínicos periodontais de indivíduos com histórico de COVID-19 tratados em uma escola de odontologia durante a pandemia em 2021, antes da vacinação. Métodos: Essa análise incluiu indivíduos maiores de 18 anos sem histórico de distúrbios sistêmicos, exceto hipertensão arterial sistêmica. Os indivíduos que tiveram COVID-19 foram classificados de acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde como assintomáticos, com sintomas leves, moderados, graves ou críticos. Resultados: 95 indivíduos foram avaliados, incluindo 24 com histórico de COVID-19. 17% eram assintomáticos, 21% tinham sintomas leves, 25% moderados, 21% graves e 17% críticos, incluindo intubação. Os indivíduos sem histórico de COVID-19 apresentaram medidas significativamente mais baixas de profundidade de sondagem (p=0,003; teste de Mann-Whitney) e nível de fixação clínica (p=0,002) em comparação com indivíduos com histórico de COVID-19. Foi encontrada uma associação negativa significativa entre o sangramento à sondagem e a gravidade das características da COVID-19 (rho= -0,233; p=0,023). Por outro lado, foram encontradas associações positivas entre os valores de profundidade de sondagem (rho = 0,292; p = 0,004) e o nível médio de apego clínico (rho = 0,300; p = 0,003) e as características da COVID-19. Conclusão: Os dados periodontais mostraram que os pacientes que tiveram COVID-19 antes da vacinação podem apresentar um pior estado periodontal quando comparados a pacientes no mesmo ambiente clínico sem histórico de COVID-19. No entanto, um estudo mais extenso deve ser realizado para confirmar tal achado com maior número de participantes.

ABSTRACT Parametric DEA models presume a functional form for the efficiency frontier and are used for resource redistribution. Parabolic DEA is a particular case of these models used to redistribute a single input in Variable Returns to Scale scenarios. In this study, we extend this model to redistribute multiple inputs simultaneously, ensuring that all DMUs will become extreme efficient after redistribution maintaining their outputs. The proposed model is a single multi-objective Linear Programming Problem (PPL) which provides a single optimal solution. ABSTRACT We propose two-dimensional representations for the efficient frontier for two different Network DEA (NDEA) models. Both representations follow a previous study that developed a generalization of the two-dimensional representation method for the classic DEA using a new form of linearization. The graphical representation of the efficient frontier allows managers and decision-makers unfamiliar with linear programming and DEA to understand the results obtained simply and clearly. In this study, we can obtain graphs that provide information about the efficiencies of each DMU. Furthermore, for the NDEA with an efficiency decomposition approach, it is possible to obtain a graph to evaluate the technical efficiency for each stage, as well as for the overall efficiency. The NDEA model based on efficiency composition only produces one graph. However, this unique representation shows the stage-level and the overall process level information within the same graph.

Resumo O fitoquímico natural látex de Euphorbia milii var. hislopii é um dos mais promissores moluscicidas naturais para o controle de Biomphalaria glabrata, tendo sido amplamente estudado em condições laboratoriais como controle seletivo da transmissão da esquistossomose. No entanto, o efeito deste produto em B. glabrata infectada por outro helminto, ainda não tinha sido investigado. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo avaliar o efeito do látex de E. milii var. hislopii na sobrevivência e atividade reprodutiva de B. glabrata infectada por Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Para isso, foram formados os seguintes grupos: controle (C), exposto (E), infectado (I) e infectado e exposto em diferentes intervalos de tempo de infecção (1 dia – I+E-1D, 7 dias – I+E-7D, 14 dias – I+E-14D, 21 dias – I+E-21D e 28 dias – I+E-28D). A infecção experimental foi realizada com larvas L1 de A. cantonensis e a exposição com 0,08 mg/L (LC50) do látex de E. milii por um período de 24 horas. Foram analisados os efeitos do látex de E. milii quanto à sobrevivência dos moluscos ao longo de quatro semanas, aos parâmetros reprodutivos e as possíveis alterações histofisiopatológicas na gônada e na glândula de albúmen dos moluscos analisados. Em relação à sobrevivência foi possível observar redução de mais de 50% nos grupos expostos ao látex (E e I + E) em comparação ao grupo controle. Quanto ao número de massas ovígeras, ovos e número médio de moluscos eclodidos pode-se observar um aumento significativo no grupo I+E-1D na 4ª semana em comparação ao grupo controle e as demais semanas no mesmo grupo. Larvas de A. cantonensis foram observadas na glândula e na glândula de albúmen, a partir dos 21º dias e 28º dia de infecção nos grupos I e I+E, respectivamente, com a formação de granuloma-like. Nesses períodos de observação e nesses grupos pode-se observar na glândula de albúmen, um aumento do conteúdo de galactogênio, o que influenciou a postura dos ovos, sugerindo um fenômeno de compensação da fecundidade. Foi possível concluir que ambos agentes estressores, infecção por A. cantonensis e exposição ao látex de E. milii influenciou diretamente a sobrevivência e os parâmetros reprodutivos de B. glabrata.

Abstract The natural phytochemical latex of Euphorbia milii var. hislopii is one of the most promising natural molluscicides for the control of Biomphalaria glabrata, and has been widely studied under laboratory conditions for selective control of schistosomiasis transmission. However, the effect of this product on B. glabrata infected by other helminths had not yet been investigated. The present study reports evaluation of the effect of E. milii var. hislopii latex on the survival and reproductive activity of B. glabrata infected by Angiostrongylus cantonensis. For this purpose, the following groups were formed: control (C), exposed (E), infected (I) and infected and exposed for different time intervals (1 day - I+E-1D, 7 days - I+E-7D, 14 days - I+E-14D, 21 days - I+E-21D and 28 days - I+E-28D). The experimental infection was performed with L1 larvae of A. cantonensis and exposure to 0.08 mg/L (LC50) of E. milii latex for a period of 24 hours. We analyzed the effects of E. milii latex on the survival of snails during four weeks, reproductive parameters and possible histophysiopathological changes in the gonad and albumen gland of the snails. Regarding survival, there was reduction of more than 50% in the groups exposed to latex (E and I + E) compared to the control group. As for the number of ovigerous masses, eggs, and average number of hatched snails, significant increases were observed in the I+E-1D group at the 4th week compared to the control group and the other weeks in the same group. Angiostrongylus cantonensis larvae were observed in the gonad and albumen gland from day 21 and 28 of infection in groups I and I+E, respectively, with granuloma-like formation. At these observation periods and in these groups, an increase in galactogen was observed in the albumen gland, which influenced egg laying, suggesting the existence of a fecundity compensation mechanism phenomenon. It was possible to conclude that both stressors – A. cantonensis infection and exposure to E. milii latex – directly influenced the survival and reproductive parameters of B. glabrata.

RESUMO Introdução: A testosterona é o principal hormônio regulador das funções reprodutivas masculinas, participando diretamente da espermatogênese e do aumento da atividade sexual. A dosagem sanguínea desse hormônio é fundamental no diagnóstico de distúrbios neuroendócrinos, como o hipogonadismo. Entretanto, há pouca padronização no preparo adequado do paciente para a coleta do hormônio em laboratórios clínicos. Objetivo: Avaliar o efeito de variáveis pré-analíticas, incluindo realização de jejum, variação circadiana e sazonal nas dosagens de testosterona em jovens saudáveis do sexo masculino. Material e métodos: Foram selecionados 42 voluntários para o estudo, na cidade de Barbacena, Minas Gerais. Quatro amostras de sangue de cada um dos participantes foram coletadas, sendo três no inverno: a primeira de manhã, em jejum; a segunda à tarde, sem jejum; a terceira no dia seguinte, de manhã, sem jejum. A última foi coletada no verão, na parte da manhã, em jejum. Resultados: As análises demonstraram que houve diminuição significativa dos níveis de testosterona total quando não foi realizado jejum de 8 horas antes da coleta e no período da tarde em comparação ao período da manhã, ambos com valor de p < 0,001. Não houve diferença significativa nos resultados obtidos no inverno e no verão. Conclusão: Recomendamos que os laboratórios clínicos padronizem a coleta de testosterona total com a realização do exame no período da manhã e em jejum de 8 horas, a fim de reduzir a variabilidade e garantir a confiabilidade nos resultados.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Testosterone is the main hormone that regulates male reproductive functions, directly participating in spermatogenesis and increasing sexual activity. The blood measurement of this hormone is essential for the diagnosis of neuroendocrine disorders, such as hypogonadism. However, there is lack of standardization regarding patient preparation for the hormone collection in clinical laboratories. Objective: Evaluate the effect of pre-analytical variables, including fasting, circadian and seasonal variation on testosterone levels in healthy young males. Material and methods: Forty-two volunteers were selected for the study, in the city of Barbacena, Minas Gerais. Four blood samples were collected from each of the participants, three in the winter: the first one in the morning after fasting; the second in the afternoon, without fasting; the third, in the next day morning, without fasting; and the last one taken in the summer, in the morning, after fasting. Results: The analyses showed that there was a significant decrease in total testosterone levels when there was no fasting for eight hours prior to collection and in the afternoon compared to the morning, both with p < 0.001. There was no significant difference in the results obtained in winter and summer. Conclusion: It is recommended that clinical laboratories standardize the collection of total testosterone by performing the test in the morning and after an eight-hour fast, in order to reduce variability and ensure reliability in the results.

RESUMEN Introducción: La testosterona es la principal hormona reguladora de funciones reproductoras masculinas, participando directamente en la espermatogénesis y en el aumento de la actividad sexual. La medición sanguínea de esa hormona es fundamental en el diagnóstico de trastornos neuroendocrinos, como el hipogonadismo. Sin embargo, hay poca estandarización en la preparación adecuada del paciente para la recolección de la hormona en laboratorios clínicos. Objetivo: Evaluar el efecto de variables preanalíticas, incluyendo ayuno, variación circadiana y estacional en las mediciones de testosterona en hombres jóvenes sanos. Material y métodos: Se eligieron 42 voluntarios para el estudio, en la ciudad de Barbacena, Minas Gerais. Se tomaron cuatro muestras de sangre de cada uno de los participantes, de las cuales tres en invierno: la primera, matutina, en ayunas; la segunda, vespertina, sin ayunas; la tercera, el dia siguiente, matutina, sin ayunas; el última se recolectó en verano, por la mañana, en ayunas. Resultados: Los análisis demostraron que hubo reducción significativa en los niveles de testosterona total cuando no se realizó el ayuno de ocho horas antes de la recolección y en el período vespertino en comparación al matutino, ambos con valor de p < 0,001. No hubo diferencia significativa en los resultados obtenidos en invierno y en verano. Conclusión: Se recomienda que los laboratórios clínicos estandarizen la recolección de testosterona total con la realización de la prueba en el período matutino y en ayuno de ocho horas, para reducir la variación y garantizar la confiabilidad de los resultados.

Resumo Este estudo descreve a formação de novas ligações C-C através da reação de alilação de diferentes aldeídos promovida pela zeólita beta. Este método ecologicamente amigável foi caracterizado por sua eficiência, versatilidade e quimiosseletividade, na formação de diferentes álcoois homoalílicos. Os álcoois homoalílicos foram obtidos em bons rendimentos (80% a 96%), tempos reacionais curtos (30 a 75 min) em temperatura ambiente e sem a necessidade de purificações adicionais. Além disso, foi utilizada água como cossolvente garantindo ao método um desenvolvimento no âmbito da química verde. Adicionalmente, constatou-se que a zeólita beta pode ser reutilizada por até um ciclo reacional sem perda de sua eficiência.

Abstract This study describes the formation of new C-C bonds through the allylation reaction of different aldehydes promoted by beta zeolite. This environmentally friendly method was characterized by its efficiency, versatility, and chemoselectivity in the formation of different homoallylic alcohols. Homoallylic alcohols were obtained in good yields (80% to 96%), short reaction times (30 to 75 min) at room temperature, and without the need for additional purifications. In addition, water was used as a co-solvent, ensuring the method a development in the field of green chemistry. Moreover, it was found that the zeolite beta can be reused for up to one reaction cycle without loss of its efficiency.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes tempos de desidratação do descarte de tomate (0, 4, 24, 60 e 96 horas) adicionado nas silagens de casca de mandioca sobre a densidade, perdas fermentativas, recuperação de matéria seca, composição química e qualidade sensorial. O material foi ensilado por 60 dias em silos de cloreto de polivinila (PVC). Houve redução linear de 0,406 kg ton-1 de matéria fresca na produção de efluente nas silagens. Máxima perda de matéria seca (MS) (p <0,01) de 7,00% foi encontrada com 8,10 h de desidratação do descarte de tomate. Houve comportamento quadrático (p <0,01) para os teores de proteína bruta (PB) e carboidratos não fibrosos (CNF), com mínimo de 9% de PB e máximo de 66,0% de CNF com 3,53 e 7,35 h de desidratação do descarte de tomate, respectivamente. A classificação "satisfatória" foi observada nas silagens com 4, 24 e 96 h de desidratação do descarte de tomate na avaliação sensorial das características associadas à conservação. A casca da mandioca ensilada com descarte de tomate submetido ao tempo de desidratação de 7,35 horas é suficiente para promover um conteúdo adequado de carboidratos não fibrosos, associado a menores perdas no processo fermentativo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different dehydration times of the tomato waste (0, 4, 24, 60 and 96 hours) added in the cassava peel silages on the density, fermentative losses, dry matter recovery, chemical composition, and sensorial quality. The material was ensiled for 60 days in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) silos. There was a linear reduction of 0.406 kg tonne-1 of fresh matter in the effluent production in the silages. A maximum dry matter (DM) loss (p<0.01) of 7.00% was found with 8.10 h of dehydration of the tomato wastes. There was a quadratic behavior (p<0.01) for crude protein (CP) and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), with minimum content of 9% CP and maximum content of 66.0% NFC with 3.53 h and 7.35 h of dehydration of the tomato wastes, respectively. The "satisfactory" classification was observed to the silages with 4, 24 and 96 h of dehydration of tomato waste in the sensory evaluation of the characteristics associated with the conservation. Cassava peel ensiling with tomato waste submitted to dehydration time of 7.35 hours is enough to promote an adequate non-fibrous carbohydrates content, associated with lower losses in the fermentation process.

The sulfur related thermochemical water-splitting cycles are an important class of chemical processes considered for hydrogen production. Recently, the magnesium sulfate thermal decomposition has been reported as a potential unit operation in one of these cycles. Therefore, some interest has been observed in the use of catalysts to lower the activation energy of such reactions. In this context, the present manuscript reports the thermodynamics and kinetics modeling results associated with this reaction system in the presence of a Pd catalyst supported over γ-Al2O3. The presence of such species is responsible for shifting the decomposition temperature to lower values in at least 100 °C. It was observed that the magnesium content is still oriented towards MgO formation. The obtained results indicate that the Pd/Al2O3 catalyst could be a good alternative in reducing the thermal decomposition temperature as its presence was responsible for diminishing the process activation energy from 368.2 to 258.8 kJ.mol−1.

Abstract The Euphobia milii var. hislopii latex has been tested in the control of schistosomiasis but its action in the locomotor activity of Biomphalaria glabrata is unknown. The objective of this work was to study the locomotor and reproductive behaviors of B. glabrata exposed to E. milii var. hislopii latex. For this, 96 snails were individually exposed to the latex (LC50 - 0.53 mg / L) for 24 hours. The specimens were submitted to biomonitoring for image analysis to record the locomotor parameters at different times: before exposure (control), one day post exposure (group 1 d-p-e) and 30 days post exposure (group 30 d-p-e). The reproductive parameters were recorded weekly for 10 weeks. All locomotor activities of group 1 d-p-e decreased significantly. The egg/egg mass ratio decreased the week after exposure while there was an increase in the hatching rate. After 30 days, these reproductive parameters were similar to those observed in these same snails before exposure. However, the number of hatched snails declined after exposure until the end of the experiment. The influence of the latex in the parameters of B. glabrata added further evidence that this natural water-soluble product can be an important tool for the control of schistosomiasis.

Abstract In this work, a simple and fast method is proposed for the determination of ethanol in homeopathic medicines using thermal infrared enthalpimetry (TIE). Samples containing alcohol in a wide concentration range (from 5% to 95% v/v) were used. Purified water or absolute ethanol was added directly into homeopathic medicine and increase of temperature was monitored using an infrared camera. Total volume, stirring speed and dispensing rate of solutions were the most significant parameters studied for method optimization. A response surface methodology (RSM) was used for optimization of the experimental conditions. The method was validated in the following parameters: selectivity, linearity, linear range, precision (repeatability and intermediate precision), limit of detection and quantification, accuracy and robustness. Linear range was obtained from 4% to 55% (ethanol, v/v). The proposed method showed accuracy in agreement with the conventional one. The proposed method it was demonstrated a good alternative for determination of ethanol in homeopathic medicines, presenting low cost, fast analysis and agreement with the principles of green analytical chemistry.

Resumo Apesar de muitos estudos sobre a ictiofauna do Arquipélago de Fernando de Noronha terem sido realizados, sua diversidade de peixes mesofóticos nunca foi estudada antes. Neste estudo utilizamos mergulho autônomo e mergulho técnico, vídeos subaquáticos remotos com isca e veículo operado remotamente para registrar peixes de ecossistemas rasos (≤ 30 m de profundidade) e mesofóticos (31 a 150 m de profundidade). Dezenove espécies de peixes pertencentes a 14 famílias são apresentadas aqui como novos registros, representando um aumento de 8,2% na riqueza de peixes marinhos da região, que agora possui um total de 250 espécies e 77 famílias. Esses novos registros incluem quatro prováveis novas espécies e reforçam a importância de estudos em ecossistemas mesofóticos. Nossos resultados também enfatizam a necessidade de proteção e atenção à essa ictiofauna única encontrada nesses ecossistemas profundos.

Abstract Although several studies on the ichthyofauna of the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago have been carried out, its mesophotic fish diversity has never been surveyed before. Here we used SCUBA and technical rebreather diving, baited remote underwater videos and remotely operated vehicle to record shallow (≤ 30 m depth) and mesophotic (31 to 150 m depth) fishes. Nineteen fish species belonging to 14 families are reported here as new records, representing an increase of 8.2% in marine fish richness for the region, which now has a total of 250 species and 77 families. These new records include four potential new species and highlight the importance of surveying mesophotic ecosystems, even in well studied sites. Our results also emphasize the need for protection and attention to the unique ichthyofauna found at mesophotic depths.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar a co-soropositividade para agentes transmitidos por carrapatos, como Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Coxiella burnetii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, e Trypanosoma vivax em bovinos de corte do Pantanal Brasileiro. Amostras de soro foram colhidas de 400 animais (200 vacas; 200 bezerros) e submetidas a Ensaios Imunoenzimáticos Indiretos (iELISA) para detecção de anticorpos IgG anti- A. marginale, anti- B. bovis, anti- B. bigemina e anti- T. vivax, e à Reação de Imunofluorescência Indireta (RIFI) para detecção de anticorpos IgG anti -C. burnetii e anti- A. phagocytophilum. Ausência de correlação foi vista entre os animais soropositivos para C. burnetii e A. phagocytophilum com os outros agentes e correlação moderada ocorreu entre A. marginale x B. bigemina x B. bovis. Vacas foram mais soropositivas que bezerros para T. vivax e bezerros mais soropositivos que vacas para B. bovis e B. bigemina. Maior número de animais soropositivos para um único agente foi visto para T. vivax (15,2%). Vacas demonstraram maior co-soropositividade para T. vivax + A. marginale (25,5%) e bezerros para T. vivax + B. bovis + B. bigemina + A. marginale (57,5%). A alta correlação entre a soropositividade para A. marginale x B. bovis x B. bigemina é provavelmente devida à presença do vetor biológico, o carrapato Rhipicephalus microplus, nas fazendas estudadas. As vias de transmissão comuns, mediadas por dípteros hematófagos e fômites, podem explicar a alta co-soropositividade das vacas para A. marginale e T. vivax. A baixa soropositividade para C. burnetii é provavelmente devida ao tipo de sistema de criação empregado (extenso). A soropositividade para A. phagocytophilum em apenas um animal sugere a ocorrência de reação sorológica cruzada com outro agente do gênero Anaplasma.

Abstract This study investigated the seropositivity for five different tick-borne agents, namely Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Coxiella burnetii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Trypanosoma vivax in beef cattle in the Brazilian Pantanal. The serum samples collected from animals (200 cows; 200 calves) were used in indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (iELISA) to detect IgG antibodies against A. marginale, B. bovis, B. bigemina, and T. vivax, and Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT) for detecting IgG antibodies against C. burnetii and A. phagocytophilum. No correlation was observed between seropositivity for C. burnetii and A. phagocytophilum with other agents whereas moderate correlation was observed for A. marginalexB. bigemina x B. bovis. Cows were more seropositive for T. vivax whereas calves were more seropositive for B. bovis and B. bigemina. The highest number of seropositive animals by a single agent was observed for T. vivax (15.2%). Co-seropositivity for T. vivax + A. marginale was higher in cows (25.5%) and for T. vivax + B. bovis + B. bigemina + A. marginale was higher in calves (57.5%). The high seropositivity correlation for A. marginale x B. bovis x B. bigemina is probably due to the presence of the tick biological vector, Rhipicephalus microplus, in the studied farms. Common transmission pathways, mediated by hematophagous dipterans and fomites, may explain the high co-seropositivity of cows for A. marginale and T. vivax. Low seropositivity to C. burnetii is probably due to the type of breeding system employed (extensive). Seropositivity for A. phagocytophilum in only one animal suggests the occurrence of a cross-serological reaction with another agent of the genus Anaplasma.

Abstract This paper presents an evaluation of multicarrier channel sounding techniques using different random and pseudo-random sequences to modulate the OFDM sounding signal. The Random (Rand), Pseudo-Noise (PN) and Zadoff-Chu (ZC) were tested, both in laboratory simulations and in field measurements. For the laboratory simulations Matlab routines were used to generate OFDM signals modulated with each of the three sounding signals, that were then convoluted with a synthesized transfer function of a test channel with six multipath components and added Gaussian noise and Doppler fading. The resulting signals are then correlated with a copy of the original signal to provide the multipath power delay profiles. The root mean square deviation (RMSD) and the relationship between peak power and mean power (PAPR) were used as metrics for the comparison between the test transfer function and the simulation detected multipath delay profiles, showing slight advantages of the ZC sequence. The three sequences were then used in field measurements to characterize an urban channel at 700 MHz. In the field measurements, the ZC sequence showed the lowest detection threshold, allowing for the detection of a larger number of multipath components.
