ABSTRACT Introduction: Adherence to non-pharmacological treatment of diabetes mellitus is a key factor in avoiding or delaying the complications of this disease. Treatment compliance depends on multiple factors. Objective: To evaluate adherence to dietary hygienic treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus, especially nutrition and physical activity. Demographic variables and the presence of arterial hypertension were also measured. Methodology: An interview was conducted with adult male and female patients, carriers of diabetes mellitus, residing in the Sajonia neighborhood of Asunción, Paraguay, between May and October 2022. Demographic and clinical variables were measured. Adherence was determined with the Caro Bautista questionnaire, which consists of seven questions that evaluate the therapeutic practices of patients in the last week. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Privada del Este, Paraguay. Results: Two hundred fifty-seven people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were interviewed, with a predominance of females (61.4%), 73.9% reported having their own income and 49% also suffered from arterial hypertension. The questionnaire detected that 20.1% followed a healthy diet all week, 15.5% performed daily physical exercises, and 14.3% performed capillary blood monitoring regularly. Conclusion: Between 10 and 22% of patients with diabetes mellitus perform adequate diet and exercise, as well as glycemia monitoring according to the recommendations of their physicians.

RESUMEN Introducción: la adherencia al tratamiento no farmacológico de la diabetes mellitus es un factor clave para evitar o retrasar las complicaciones de esta enfermedad. El cumplimento terapéutico depende de múltiples factores. Objetivo: evaluar la adherencia al tratamiento higiénico dietético en pacientes con diabetes mellitus, sobre todo la nutricional y la actividad física. Se midieron además las variables demográficas y presencia de hipertensión arterial. Metodología: se realizó una entrevista a pacientes adultos de ambos sexos, portadores de diabetes mellitus, que residen en el barrio Sajonia de Asunción, Paraguay, entre mayo y octubre del 2022. Se midieron variables demográficas y clínicas. La adherencia se determinó con el cuestionario de Caro Bautista que consta de 7 preguntas que evalúan las prácticas terapéuticas de los pacientes en la última semana. El estudio contó con la aprobación del Comité de ética de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Privada del Este, Paraguay. Resultados: fueron entrevistados 257 personas con el diagnóstico de diabetes mellitus, con predominio del sexo femenino (61,4%), 73,9% refería tener ingresos propios y 49% padecía también de hipertensión arterial. El cuestionario detectó que 20,1% seguía una dieta saludable toda la semana, 15,5% realizaba ejercicios físicos diariamente y 14,3% realizaba los monitoreos de sangre capilar regularmente. Conclusión: entre 10 y 22% de los pacientes con diabetes mellitus realiza dieta y ejercicios adecuados, así como monitoreo de la glucemia según las recomendaciones de sus médicos.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes tempos de desidratação do descarte de tomate (0, 4, 24, 60 e 96 horas) adicionado nas silagens de casca de mandioca sobre a densidade, perdas fermentativas, recuperação de matéria seca, composição química e qualidade sensorial. O material foi ensilado por 60 dias em silos de cloreto de polivinila (PVC). Houve redução linear de 0,406 kg ton-1 de matéria fresca na produção de efluente nas silagens. Máxima perda de matéria seca (MS) (p <0,01) de 7,00% foi encontrada com 8,10 h de desidratação do descarte de tomate. Houve comportamento quadrático (p <0,01) para os teores de proteína bruta (PB) e carboidratos não fibrosos (CNF), com mínimo de 9% de PB e máximo de 66,0% de CNF com 3,53 e 7,35 h de desidratação do descarte de tomate, respectivamente. A classificação "satisfatória" foi observada nas silagens com 4, 24 e 96 h de desidratação do descarte de tomate na avaliação sensorial das características associadas à conservação. A casca da mandioca ensilada com descarte de tomate submetido ao tempo de desidratação de 7,35 horas é suficiente para promover um conteúdo adequado de carboidratos não fibrosos, associado a menores perdas no processo fermentativo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different dehydration times of the tomato waste (0, 4, 24, 60 and 96 hours) added in the cassava peel silages on the density, fermentative losses, dry matter recovery, chemical composition, and sensorial quality. The material was ensiled for 60 days in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) silos. There was a linear reduction of 0.406 kg tonne-1 of fresh matter in the effluent production in the silages. A maximum dry matter (DM) loss (p<0.01) of 7.00% was found with 8.10 h of dehydration of the tomato wastes. There was a quadratic behavior (p<0.01) for crude protein (CP) and non-fibrous carbohydrates (NFC), with minimum content of 9% CP and maximum content of 66.0% NFC with 3.53 h and 7.35 h of dehydration of the tomato wastes, respectively. The "satisfactory" classification was observed to the silages with 4, 24 and 96 h of dehydration of tomato waste in the sensory evaluation of the characteristics associated with the conservation. Cassava peel ensiling with tomato waste submitted to dehydration time of 7.35 hours is enough to promote an adequate non-fibrous carbohydrates content, associated with lower losses in the fermentation process.

ABSTRACT The raw glycerol obtained from the production of biodiesel contains salts and impurities that can generate negative impacts when applied to the soil, however, mixing them with solutions of nitrogen fertilizers could be a viable solution. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of glycerol on the system soil-plant, in two crops, corn (Zea mayz L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The study was conducted in 2016 at the Sao Paulo State University UNESP- Jaboticabal, Brazil. The experiments were prepared in a design totally randomized in a factorial arrangement 2 x 3 with four repetitions. The studied factors were soil: Argisol (Hapludox) and Latosol (Haplustox) and fertilization (without fertilizer, urea and urea + glycerol). At 60 days of having applied the treatments, the electric conductivity (EC) and the dehydrogenase enzyme (DH) were measured in the soil and nitrogen accumulation in aboveground (NF) and the dry biomass (DM) in the plant. Raw glycerol increased EC values in both soils, while DH, NF and DM were higher in Latosol soil. The treatment urea + glycerin increased the EC, the DH and the DM, and the urea the NF. The DH and EC media values varied per treatment and in each studied soil. For application of crude glycerol to these crops, a systematic control of the EC of the soil should be carried out as well as the implementation of agricultural practices that mitigate the salinization impact.

RESUMEN La glicerina cruda obtenida de la producción de biodiésel contiene sales e impurezas que pueden generar impactos negativos cuando se aplica al suelo, sin embargo, su mezcla con disoluciones de fertilizantes nitrogenados pudiera ser una solución viable. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el efecto de la glicerina cruda sobre el sistema suelo-planta, en plantas de maíz (Zea mayz L.) y sorgo (Sorghum bicolor L.). El estudio se realizó en el año 2016 en la Universidad Júlio de Mesquita Filho en Brasil. Los experimentos fueron dispuestos en un diseño completamente aleatorizado en un arreglo factorial 2 x 3 con cuatro repeticiones. Los factores estudiados fueron tipo de suelo: Argisol (Hapludox) y Latosol (Haplustox), y fertilización (sin fertilizante, urea y urea + glicerina). A los 60 días de aplicados los tratamientos se midieron la conductividad eléctrica (EC) y la enzima deshidrogenasa (DH) en el suelo, la biomasa seca (DM) y el contenido de nitrógeno (NF) en la planta. La glicerina cruda incrementó los valores de la EC en ambos suelos, mientras la DH, el NF y la DM fueron mayores en el suelo Latosol. El tratamiento urea + glicerina incrementó la EC, la DH y la DM y la urea el NF. Los valores medios de DH y EC fueron variables entre tratamientos y entre suelos usados. Para la aplicación de glicerina cruda a estos cultivos se debe realizar un control sistemático de la EC del suelo, así como la implementación de prácticas agrícolas que mitiguen el impacto de la salinización.

Abstract Introduction Many patients undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery still have an uncontrolled clinical disease in the late post-operative period. Up to 11.4% of the patients will require a revision surgery. Findings such as the residual uncinated process and the lateralization of the middle turbinate were considered by some studies as being responsible for failure in the primary surgery. Objectives To describe the tomographical findings in adult patients undergoing revision endoscopic sinus surgery, the profile of those patients, and verify the mucosal thickening level of the paranasal sinus. Methods Data were collected from medical records and computed tomography reports of 28 patients undergoing revision sinus surgery on a private service in the city of Blumenau between 2007 and 2014. The score of Lund-Mackay was used to verify the mucosal thickening level. Results Among the 28 patients, 23 were reoperated once, 3 were reoperated twice, and 2 were reoperated 3 times. The most relevant findings were mucosal thickening of the maxillary sinus (89.28%), deviated septum (75%), thickening of the ethmoid (50%) and sphenoidal sinuses (39.28%), and pneumatization of the middle turbinate (39.28%). The average obtained in the Lund-Mackay score was 5.71, withmost patients classified in the lower range of punctuation. Conclusion The analysis of the computed tomography scans showed persistent structures that may be responsible for the failure of the primary surgery. Computed tomography is a useful tool to plan the surgery and quantify the post-operative success.

Objetivou-se identificar o modelo de regressão não linear mais adequado para descrever a curva de crescimento de quatro linhagens de frangos caipira e compará-las entre as linhagens. Foram utilizadas 100 aves, sendo 13 machos e 12 fêmeas de cada uma das linhagens. Foram testados 13 modelos de regressão não linear e, após a seleção do melhor modelo, foi verificada a igualdade de parâmetros e identidade de modelos não lineares. O peso médio aos 77 dias de idade foi de 3.017, 2.781, 2.724 e 2.587kg para a Pesadão, Mista, Carijó e Pescoço Pelado, respectivamente. O modelo Quadrático Logarítmico apresentou melhor ajuste dos dados para as linhagens Pesadão, Carijó e Mista, segundo o quadrado médio do resíduo e desvio médio absoluto. Para a linhagem Pescoço Pelado, os critérios estatísticos apontaram como mais adequado o modelo Polinomial Inverso, seguido do Quadrático Logarítmico. As curvas de crescimento entre machos e entre fêmeas das linhagens foram diferentes, assim, como as curvas de crescimento de machos e fêmeas dentro de linhagens. A divergência entre as classes avaliadas foi atribuída à taxa de decréscimo de peso, parâmetro c do modelo Quadrático Logarítmico. O modelo Quadrático Logarítmico pode ser utilizado para descrever a curva de crescimento das quatro linhagens. A linhagem Pesadão tem o crescimento mais acelerado e a linhagem Pescoço Pelado tem o crescimento mais lento. A partir do 35o dia de idade, sugere-se o ajuste do manejo nutricional para alterar a curva de crescimento e atender a legislação vigente e o mercado consumidor.

This study aimed to identify the nonlinear regression model more adequate to describe and compare the growth curve of four strains of broiler chickens. One hundred birds were used, 13 males and 12 females from each strains. There were tested 13 models of nonlinear regression and after that the best model was used to test the parameters equality and the models identity. The average weight at 77 days of age was 3.017, 2.781, 2.724 and 2.587kg to the strains Hulking, Mixed, Carijó and Naked Neck, respectively. The Quadratic Logarithmic model showed better fit the data from Hulking, Carijó and Mixed strains, according to the mean square and mean absolute deviation tests. To the Naked Neck line the statistical criteria showed as more suitable the Inverse Polynomial model followed by the Quadratic Logarithmic. The males and females growth curves were different between and within the strains. The divergence between the evaluated classes was attributed to the decrease of weight rate, c parameter of Quadratic Logarithmic model. Quadratic Logarithmic model could be used to describe the growth curve of the four strains. The Hulking strain presented the faster and the Naked Neck strain presented the slowest growth. The feed system with the objective of change the growth curve must be adopted by the 35th day of age, to attend the current legislation and the consumer market.

Ratoon sugarcane response to potassium is dependent on the environmental conditions of the region. Cropping systems that do not burn crop biomass after harvest leave crop residues on the soil, affecting the soil-plant nutrient dynamics system and fertilizer requirements. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of potassium fertilization of first and second ratoon sugarcane crops on potassium contents in the soil, in the plant, and yield and quality of stalksin an Oxisol under a conservation cropping system. The following potassium rates were tested: 0, 27, 54, 108, and 162 kg K ha-1, arranged in a randomized block design with five replicates. The application of potassium increased soil nutrient concentrations at six months, reaching 2.87 and 2.61 mmol c dm-3 with the highest rate in the first and second ratoons, respectively. The increase in available exchangeable-K content in the soil favored a greater plant uptake of this nutrient, reaching 12.1 and 10.0 g kg-1 in the first and second ratoons, respectively. The increase in potassium absorption by plants was reflected in the production of stems; the highest yields (87.0 and 132.9 t ha-1) were obtained with the application of 162 kg K ha-1 in the first and second ratoons, respectively.

The presence of mulch on the soil surface after the mechanical harvesting of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) enhances the cycling of nutrients, especially K, which can decrease K fertilizer recommendations for the crop. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of K addition to an Oxisol, with an initial concentration 0.07 cmol c K kg-1, in first and second ratoon (no-till) sugarcane cultures by a conservationist system, i.e. rational use of fertilizers, use of alternative inputs and especially the maintenance of residues in soil that was previously burned to facilitate cutting. The following K doses were tested: 0, 32.5, 65, 130, and 195 kg K2O ha-1, arranged in a randomized block design with five replicates. Potassium content in the soil and in the plant, as well as the yield and the quality of stalks were evaluated. Soil K application increased K concentration in soil and plant, and was reflected in the production of stalks, with higher production (87.5 and 107.5 t ha-1) with the use of 120 and 123 kg K2O ha-1 in first and second ratoon sugarcane, respectively. At the first 2 yr it was not possible to reduce the K fertilization in ratoon. Therefore, with the introduction of the conservationist system there was an increase (20 t ha-1) at the second ratoon regarding the first one with the same applied rate.

CONTEXTO: Na doença de Machado-Joseph, a má postura, a distonia e a neuropatia periférica predispõem à disfagia orofaríngea, mais comumente associada à distrofia muscular. OBJETIVO: Avaliar as características clínicas da disfagia orofaríngea em pacientes com doença de Machado-Joseph. MÉTODOS: Quarenta indivíduos participaram do estudo, incluindo 20 sem quaisquer queixas clínicas e 20 disfágicos com doença de Machado-Joseph do tipo clínico 1, grupos similares em termos de sexo, média de idade e função cognitiva. Foi verificada a história clínica de cada paciente e todos os indivíduos passaram por avaliação clínica da deglutição. Ao final, a disfagia dos enfermos com doença de Machado-Joseph foi classificada de acordo com a Escala de Severidade da Disfagia. RESULTADOS: A comparação entre disfágicos e controles não revelou muitas diferenças significativas quanto à avaliação clínica da fase oral da deglutição, visto que os pacientes demonstraram déficits apenas relacionados à protrusão, retração e tônus linguais. Entretanto, em relação à fase faríngea, várias alterações relevantes, ausentes nos controles, foram notadas nos pacientes, tais como estase faríngea à deglutição de líquidos e sólidos, acompanhada de tosse e/ou engasgo, assim como de penetração e/ou aspiração laringotraqueal. CONCLUSÕES: Disfagia orofaríngea faz parte da doença de Machado-Joseph desde as primeiras manifestações neurológicas. Há maior comprometimento da fase faríngea, em relação à fase oral da deglutição. A disfagia desses pacientes é classificada entre leve e moderada.

CONTEXT: In Machado-Joseph disease, poor posture, dystonia and peripheral neuropathy are extremely predisposing to oropharyngeal dysphagia, which is more commonly associated with muscular dystrophy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of oropharyngeal dysphagia in Machado-Joseph disease patients. METHOD: Forty individuals participated in this study, including 20 with no clinical complaints and 20 dysphagic patients with Machado-Joseph disease of clinical type 1, who were all similar in terms of gender distribution, average age, and cognitive function. The medical history of each patient was reviewed and each subject underwent a clinical evaluation of deglutition. At the end, the profile of dysphagia in patients with Machado-Joseph disease was classified according to the Severity Scale of Dysphagia, as described by O'Neil and collaborators. RESULTS: Comparison between dysphagic patients and controls did not reveal many significant differences with respect to the clinical evaluation of the oral phase of deglutition, since afflicted patients only demonstrated deficits related to the protrusion, retraction and tonus of the tongue. However, several significant differences were observed with respect to the pharyngeal phase. Dysphagic patients presented pharyngeal stasis during deglutition of liquids and solids, accompanied by coughing and/or choking as well as penetration and/or aspiration; these signs were absent in the controls. CONCLUSIONS: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is part of the Machado-Joseph disease since the first neurological manifestations. There is greater involvement of the pharyngeal phase, in relation to oral phase of the deglutition. The dysphagia of these patients is classified between mild and moderate.

In this work we report efficiency measurements on light-emitting diodes with electrochemically synthesized sulfonated polyaniline as hole transport layer. The anode used in our devices is fluorine-doped tin oxide, the blocking layer is electrochemically synthesized poly(9,9-dioctyl-1,4-fluorenylenevinylene) and the electron transporting material and emitter is tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum. Sulfonated polyaniline based devices presented efficiency of 0.79 cd/A.
