Abstract Entrepreneurial parents are important agents for transmitting entrepreneurial intentions to their children. Recent studies have highlighted that parental influence on children’s entrepreneurial careers can increase when peers are of the same gender (gender homophily) - the effects become greater in father-son or mother-daughter dyads. However, exposure to entrepreneurial parents alone is insufficient to explain their children’s entrepreneurial intentions, as dimensions such as the nature of communication/interaction and financial incentives can impact this relationship. However, these transmission factors/channels have received little attention in the literature. Thus, this study examines whether having entrepreneurial parents affects their children’s propensity to become entrepreneurs, analyzing the main transmission factors/channels and whether gender homophily moderates this effect. The sample consisted of 20,623 university students who participated in the Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey -GUESSS Brazil 2018. Data were analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression and Probit Regression Models. The results suggest that having an entrepreneurial father or entrepreneurial parents (father and mother) is associated with an increase in the probability of an individual becoming an entrepreneur. This effect is greater in the case of males in the father-son dyad. In addition, with regard to transmission channels, it was found that parental influence on the entrepreneurial career is exerted, above all, by the professional models that parents represent (career-related modeling), comments/compliments from parents (verbal encouragement), and financial/material incentive (instrumental assistance).

Resumen Los padres emprendedores son agentes importantes para transmitir las intenciones emprendedoras a sus hijos. Estudios recientes han destacado que la influencia de los padres en las carreras emprendedoras de los hijos puede aumentar cuando los pares son del mismo género (homofilia de género), es decir, los efectos son mayores en las díadas padre-hijo o madre-hija. Sin embargo, la exposición a padres emprendedores por sí sola es insuficiente para explicar las intenciones emprendedoras de los hijos, ya que dimensiones como la naturaleza de la comunicación/interacción e incluso los incentivos financieros pueden afectar esta relación. Sin embargo, estos factores/canales de transmisión han recibido poca atención en la literatura. Así, el objetivo de este estudio es examinar si tener padres emprendedores afecta a la propensión a emprender de sus hijos, analizando los principales factores/canales de transmisión, así como si la homofilia de género juega un papel moderador de este efecto. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 20.623 estudiantes universitarios que participaron en la encuesta Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey -GUESSS Brasil 2018. Los datos se analizaron mediante modelos de regresión lineal múltiple y regresión probit. Los resultados sugieren que tener un padre emprendedor o padres emprendedores (padre y madre) está asociado con un aumento en la probabilidad de emprender de un individuo y este efecto es mayor en el caso de los varones, en la díada padre-hijo. Además, en cuanto a los canales de transmisión, se encontró que la influencia de los padres en la carrera emprendedora la ejercen, sobre todo, los modelos profesionales que representan los padres (modelado relacionado con la carrera), los comentarios/elogios de los padres (estímulos verbales), así como el incentivo económico/material (asistencia instrumental).

Resumo Pais empreendedores são importantes agentes para transmitir intenções empreendedoras aos filhos. Estudos recentes têm destacado que a influência parental sobre a carreira empreendedora dos filhos pode aumentar quando os pares forem do mesmo gênero (homofilia de gênero), ou seja, os efeitos tornam-se maiores nas díades pai-filho ou mãe-filha. No entanto, apenas a exposição a pais empreendedores é insuficiente para explicar as intenções empreendedoras dos filhos, visto que dimensões como a natureza da comunicação/interação e até mesmo os incentivos financeiros podem impactar esse relacionamento. Todavia, esses canais de transmissão têm recebido pouca atenção na literatura. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo é examinar se ter pais empreendedores afeta a propensão a empreender dos filhos, analisando quais os principais fatores/canais de transmissão, bem como se a homofilia de gênero exerce papel moderador de tal efeito. A amostra foi composta por 20.623 estudantes universitários que participaram do Global University Entrepreneurial Spirit Students’ Survey (GUESSS) Brasil 2018. Os dados foram analisados por meio de Modelos de Regressão Linear Múltipla e Regressão Probit. Os resultados sugerem que possuir pai empreendedor ou pais (pai e mãe) empreendedores está associado a um aumento na probabilidade de o indivíduo empreender e tal efeito é maior no caso do gênero masculino na díade pai-filho. Ademais, no tocante aos canais de transmissão, constatou-se que a influência parental na carreira empreendedora é exercida, sobretudo, pelos modelos de profissionais que os pais representam (modelagem relacionada com a carreira), comentários/elogios dos pais (encorajamento verbal), bem como pelo incentivo financeiro/material (assistência instrumental).

ABSTRACT This paper aims to evaluate the impact of gamification as a practice of teaching entrepreneurship on the entrepreneurial intention. We applied the FishBanks simulation to entrepreneurship classes of a Brazilian technical business course at the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN). We adopted as an identification strategy the use of the methods of difference-in-differences, combined with propensity score matching and quantile regression to investigate the impact of gamification on entrepreneurial intention of the students of a technical business course. The sample was composed of 191 students on a longitudinal panel of two periods, with 106 students in the treatment group and 85 students in the control group, totaling 382 observations. The results indicate a positive and statistically significant impact of the use of the business game on the entrepreneurial intention. Furthermore, we observed a higher impact of gamification in entrepreneurial intention of the students in the first quartile of the entrepreneurial intention.

ABSTRACT The intergenerational transmission is one of the key variables that shape entrepreneurship as an occupational choice. However, the role of gender is still a gap in the literature on intergenerational transmission of entrepreneurial behavior. Thus, this study aims to assess the effect of gender homophily in the intergenerational transmission of entrepreneurial behavior. The sample was composed of 10,889 students from the Federal Institute of Technology of Rio Grande do Norte. The probit regression method was applied to measure the probability of an individual becoming an entrepreneur if they are born of an entrepreneurial father or mother. The results show that being an offspring of an entrepreneurial father or entrepreneurial mother is associated with an increase in the probability of an individual becoming an entrepreneur. Moreover, the transmission is increased when the entrepreneurial parent and the offspring share the same gender.

RESUMO A literatura sobre o papel do gênero no empreendedorismo cresceu consideravelmente nos últimos anos, entretanto pouco se estudou sobre sua influência na concepção de um negócio (FRIGOTTO; DELLA VALLE, 2016). Em busca de evidências que auxiliem a elucidar o debate sobre essa lacuna, esta pesquisa buscou verificar se há associação entre gênero e o modo de empreender à luz das abordagens Causation - baseada na causalidade - e Effectuation - baseada em contingências - (SARASVATHY, 2001). Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa com Microempreendedores Individuais (MEI) na cidade de Nova Cruz/RN. A amostra aleatória foi constituída por 100 respondentes. O instrumento de pesquisa foi composto por perguntas fechadas, compreendendo o perfil do empreendedor, perfil da empresa e as abordagens Causation e Effectuation. Para a análise dos dados, foram utilizadas as técnicas de análise fatorial e regressão linear múltipla. Os resultados demonstram associação positiva entre o gênero feminino e a perspectiva Causation.

ABSTRACT The literature on the role of gender in entrepreneurship has been growing significantly in recent last years (FRIGOTTO; DELLA VALLE, 2016). However, little has been studied about the influence of gender in the conception of a business venture. In the search for empirical evidence to elucidate the debate about this gap in the literature, this research sought to verify whether there is an association between gender and the approaches Causation - based on causality - and Effectuation - based on contingencies - (SARASVATHY, 2001). For this purpose, a survey was conducted with Individual Micro Entrepreneurs (MEI) in the city of Nova Cruz/RN. A probabilistic random sample of 100 respondents was collected. The survey was composed of closed questions, including the profile of the entrepreneur, company profile and the Causation and Effectuation questions. The techniques of factorial analysis and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis. The results show a positive and statistically significant association between the female gender and the Causation perspective.

RESUMO O abastecimento de água e o saneamento são dois serviços essenciais para a sociedade, ainda mais no Brasil, onde há, historicamente, um déficit desses serviços básicos. Além disso, também se sabe que tais serviços envolvem muitos atores, que muitas vezes possuem perspectivas conflitantes, características de problemas multicriteriais. Diante disso, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o serviço de abastecimento de água de oito municípios do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (RN). Para tanto, foram selecionados 11 critérios, levando-se em consideração aspectos operacionais, financeiros e de qualidade da água, e foi adotado o método de apoio multicritério à decisão TOPSIS. Também foi utilizado o procedimento da entropia para a obtenção dos pesos de cada critério. Os resultados apontaram o município de Lagoa Nova como a alternativa com melhor serviço de abastecimento de água entre as opções estudadas. Em contrapartida, Santana do Matos foi o município com a pior avaliação do conjunto de alternativas estudadas.

ABSTRACT Water supply and sewage are two essential services to society, especially in Brazil, where historically there has been a deficit of these crucial services. Moreover, it is also known that such services involve many actors who often have conflicting perspectives, characteristics of multicriteria problems. Thus, this paper aimed to evaluate the water supply service in eight cities of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. Eleven criteria were selected, considering operational, financial and water quality aspects. We adopted the TOPSIS method to support the multicriteria decision. In addition, the entropy method was used to obtain the weights for each criterion. The results showed the city of Lagoa Nova as the alternative with the best water supply service of the alternatives studied. In contrast, Santana do Matos was the city with the worst water supply assessment of all the studied alternatives.

A atividade empreendedora representa papel preponderante na dinâmica econômica de uma nação. Estudos anteriores afirmam que fatores institucionais estão correlacionados com a abertura de novos negócios, entretanto a literatura é divergente quanto ao efeito da corrupção burocrática sobre o empreendedorismo. Desse modo, o presente estudo tem por objetivo verificar a relação entre empreendedorismo e corrupção burocrática, tendo como base os estados brasileiros e Distrito Federal, para o período de 2000 a 2008. Adota-se o termo empreendedorismo como o ato de abrir uma nova empresa, como em Say (1816), Mescon e Montanari (1981) e Lachman (1980). A principal hipótese é que a abertura de empresas nos estados brasileiros é afetada negativamente pela incidência da corrupção. Através do método de regressão com dados em painel, foram estimados os modelos com dados agrupados e com efeitos fixos e aleatórios. Para mensurar a corrupção, utilizou-se o Índice Geral da Corrupção de Boll (2010) para os estados brasileiros e, para representar o empreendedorismo, a abertura de empresas per capita por estado. Os testes de Chow (1960), Hausman (1978) e Breusch e Pagan (1979) apontam que o modelo de efeitos aleatórios é o mais apropriado e seus resultados indicam uma correlação positiva entre o índice de corrupção e a abertura de empresas, contrariando as evidências empíricas encontradas em trabalhos anteriores realizados para o Brasil.

Entrepreneurial activity performs an important role in a nation's economic dynamics. Previous studies argue that institutional factors are correlated with the opening of new businesses, however, the literature is divergent as to the effect of bureaucratic corruption on entrepreneurship. Thus, this article aims to investigate the relationship between entrepreneurship and the incidence of bureaucratic corruption in Brazilian states and its Federal District (Brasilia), for the period of 2000-2008. This study's main hypothesis is that opening a business in Brazilian states is negatively affected by the incidence of corruption. Using a regression method with panel data, we estimated models with pooled data and fixed and random effects. The term entrepreneurship is adopted as the act of starting a new business, as in Say (1816), Mescon and Montanari (1981) and Lachman (1980). To measure corruption, we used the General Index of Corruption for Brazilian states (Boll, 2010), and to represent entrepreneurship, we used firm entry per capita by state. Tests of the Chow (1960), Hausman (1978) e Breusch and Pagan (1979) indicate that the random effects model is more appropriate, and the results indicate a positive correlation between bureaucratic corruption and entrepreneurial activity, contradicting the hypothesis expected and found in previous articles about Brazil.
