Abstract Pequi, murici and sweet passionfruit are typical fruits from Brazilian Cerrado, which stand out for their sensory attributes such as color, flavor and aroma, in addition to their high nutritional value. Their seeds are by-products from the industrial processing of juices, pulps, jellies, and others, and have great exploitation potential due to their high oil content and the presence of bioactive compounds. The present work aimed to evaluate the chemical composition of pequi almonds, and of murici and sweet passionfruit seeds, and also to quantify the total phenolic compounds, carotenoids, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity by the scavenging activity of •DPPH method. Concerning the chemical composition, pequi almonds presented the highest concentration of lipids (50%), followed by sweet passionfruit (30%) and murici seeds (15%). The almonds from pequi fruit showed the greatest content of protein (33.3%) followed by sweet passionfruit seeds (15%), which presented the highest amount of fiber (41.3%). Murici seeds exhibited the highest content of carbohydrates (46.4%). Pequi almonds had the greatest content of the following minerals, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, manganese, zinc, copper, iron, and sodium, and anthocyanins (14.4 mg CYG/100 g d.b.). Sweet passionfruit seeds presented the greatest amount of calcium, and also had the highest carotenoid content (9 mg/100 g d.b.). Murici seeds showed the highest potential for bioactive compounds, with 404 mg GAE/100 g d.b. and 81% of scavenging activity for the •DPPH. The results demonstrated that the studied seeds have the potential to be sources for new product development, such as oil.

RESUMO A ectopia ureteral é uma enfermidade congênita que se caracteriza quando um ou ambos os ureteres apresentam-se inseridos fora do seu local anatômico, com a inserção ocorrendo no útero, no colo da bexiga, na uretra ou na vagina, devido a uma diferenciação anormal dos ductos mesonéfricos e metanéfricos. Nos machos, a inserção pode ocorrer também nos ductos deferentes e na próstata. A incontinência urinária é o sinal clínico mais comumente associado ao ureter ectópico. O presente relato descreve um caso de ureter ectópico extramural unilateral, em um cão da raça Labrador Retriever de sete anos de idade, corrigido cirurgicamente, e mostra a importância dos exames radiográfico contrastado e ultrassonografia.

ABSTRACT Ureteral ectopia is a congenital disease that is characterized when one or both ureters are shown inserted outside their anatomic site, with the possible insertion in the uterus, bladder neck, the urethra or vagina due to abnormal differentiation of ducts mesonephrics and metanephrics. In males the insertion can also occur in the vas deferens and prostate. Urinary incontinence is the most common clinical sign associated with ectopic ureter. This report describes a case of unilateral extramural ectopic ureter in a dog of the Labrador Retriever breed at seven years old surgically corrected, and shows the importance of contrast radiographic examination and ultrasound.

Microcystin is a hepatotoxic peptide which inhibits protein phosphatase types 1 and 2A. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the physiopathologic effects of microcystin-LR in isolated perfused rat kidney. Adult Wistar rats (N = 5) of both sexes (240-280 g) were utilized. Microcystin-LR (1 µg/ml) was perfused over a period of 120 min, during which samples of urine and perfusate were collected at 10-min intervals to determine the levels of inulin, sodium, potassium and osmolality. We observed a significant increase in urinary flow with a peak effect at 90 min (control (C) = 0.20 ± 0.01 and treated (T) = 0.32 ± 0.01 ml g-1 min-1, P<0.05). At 90 min there was a significant increase in perfusate pressure (C = 129.7 ± 4.81 and T = 175.0 ± 1.15 mmHg) and glomerular filtration rate (C = 0.66 ± 0.07 and T = 1.10 ± 0.04 ml g-1 min-1) and there was a significant reduction in fractional sodium tubular transport at 120 min (C = 78.6 ± 0.98 and T = 73.9 ± 0.95%). Histopathologic analysis of the perfused kidneys showed protein material in the urinary space, suggestive of renal toxicity. These data demonstrate renal vascular, glomerular and urinary effects of microcystin-LR, indicating that microcystin acts directly on the kidney by probable inhibition of protein phosphatases.
