Resumen Antecedentes y Objetivos: Se ha reportado la visita y recolección de fragancias en frutos del género Vanilla por abejas Euglosinas (Eulaema spp.). Sin embargo, en Vanilla planifolia aun no se ha registrado este comportamiento. Por lo tanto, los objetivos del presente trabajo fueron identificar a los euglosinos que visitaban los frutos maduros de V. planifolia, así como la frecuencia de su visita. Métodos: Se llevaron a cabo 11 muestreos durante un mes (6 de marzo al 6 de abril de 2021) en una plantación experimental de Vanilla planifolia con frutos maduros de vainilla en Veracruz, México. Cada muestreo tuvo una duración de diez horas (08:00 a 18:00 hrs), representando en total 110 horas de esfuerzo de muestreo. Durante los muestreos se colectaron individuos de abejas Euglosinas directamente de los frutos maduros de vainilla para identificarlos a nivel de especie. También se registró la frecuencia de visita por parte de los euglosinos a los frutos maduros de V. planifolia. Resultados clave: Se identificaron cinco especies pertenecientes a tres géneros de Euglossini que visitaban los frutos maduros de Vanilla planifolia: Euglossa hemichlora, E. variabilis, Eulaema cingulata, E. polychroma y Exaerete frontalis. El género Eulaema representó 72% de las visitas a los frutos de V. planifolia. A su vez, la frecuencia de visita estuvo dominada por Eulaema polychroma con 54% del total de las vistas registradas (n=211). Conclusiones: Por primera vez se registran abejas Euglosinas colectando fragancias de los frutos maduros de V. planifolia. Eulaema polychroma es la especie con el mayor porcentaje de visita a los frutos maduros de V. planifolia para recolectar fragancias.

Abstract Background and Aims: Visitation and fragrance collection in fruits of the genus Vanilla by Euglossine bees (Eulaema spp.) have previously been documented. However, in Vanilla planifolia, the most commonly cultivated species, this behavior has not yet been recorded. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify Euglossine visitors of the mature fruits of V. planifolia and to identify the frequency of these visitations. Methods: We held 11 observations set within a month (from March 6 to April 6, 2021) in an experimental Vanilla planifolia plantation with mature fruits of vanilla in Veracruz, Mexico. Each observation lasted for ten hours (from 8:00 to 18:00), representing a total of 110 hours sampling effort. During our observations we collected individuals of Euglossine bees directly from the mature fruits of vanilla to identify them at species level. We also recorded the frequency of Euglossini visits to mature fruits of V. planifolia. Key results: We identified five species belonging to three Euglossini genera visiting mature fruits of V. planifolia: Euglossa hemichlora, E. variabilis, Eulaema cingulata, E. polychroma, and Exaerete frontalis. The genus Eulaema had 72% of visits to V. planifolia fruits. Visitation frequency was dominated by Eulaema polychroma with 54% of total recorded visits (n=211). Conclusions: For the first time, Euglossine bees have been registered collecting scents in mature fruits of V. planifolia. Eulaema polychroma was the species with the highest percentage of visits to mature fruits V. planifolia to collect fragrances.

A teoria de campo de cancerização em neoplasias de cabeça e pescoço (CP) reflete a complexa oncogênese que ocorre nesta região. Os mecanismos a nível molecular que controlam a proliferação celular em Carcinomas epidermóides (CEC) de vias aerodigestivas superiores ainda são pouco conhecidos. Mutações no p53 são as alterações genéticas mais encontradas em CEC de CP e parecem contribuir ativamente em seu processo carcinogênico como gene supressor de tumor e a sua associação com tabaco. O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a expressão da proteína p53 em carcinoma epidermóide de cabeça e pescoço por meio de reação imunohistoquimica e sua correlação com outros fatores prognósticos. O estudo inclui 63 casos consecutivos de CEC, não tratados previamente. Espécimes de tumor e de mucosa normal adjacente foram colhidos durante o ato cirúrgico e submetidos a reação imunohistoquímica para avaliação da expressão do anticorpo anti-proteína p53 (M7001 DAKO AVS, Denmark Inc.) Não houve significância entre os dados anatomo-clínicos e demográficos, presença de metastases linfonodais e a expressão de p53 no tumor ou na mucosa adjacente normal. A localização do tumor na laringe apresentou correlação estatistica significativa com a expressão da p53 . A graduação histológica, separada em graus I e ll, e III e IV apresentou correlação com a expressão de p53 significante ( p=0,025). Conclusões: 1-No material estudado proveniente de 63 casos de CEC de cabeça e pescoço encontramos 48% de superexpressão de p53 imunohistoquimicamente detectável, índice compatível com os demais relatados na literatura; 2-Não encontramos relação entre os dados demográficos do paciente e a expressão de p53 no tumor e na mucosa normal adjacente; 3- O achado de superexpressão de p53 mais freqüente em Material de CEC de laringe foi estatisticamente significativo. 4-A presença de 12 casos com superexpressão de p53 na mucosa normal adjacente e com tumor p53 negativo esta de acordo com a teoria de cancerização de campo. O seguimento desta série por maior tempo possibilitará uma melhor análise destes valores.

The theory of field cancerization in tumors of the head and neck reflects the complex oncogenesis that occurs in this region. The mechanisms that control cell proliferation at the molecular level in epidermoid carcinomas (ECs) of the upper aerodigestive tract are still unclear. Mutations in p53 are the genetic alterations most often detected in ECs of the head and neck and seem to contribute actively to the carcinogenic process triggered by p53 as a tumor-suppressor gene and to its association with tobacco. The objective of the present study was to investigate the expression of p53 protein in epidermoid head and neck carcinomas by immunohistochemistry and its immunohistochemical correlation with other prognostic factors. The study was conducted on 63 consecutive ECs cases not submitted to previous treatment. Specimens of the tumor and of the normal adjacent mucosa were collected during surgery and submitted to immunohistochemical reaction for the determination of the expression of anti-protein p53 antibody (M7001 DAKO A/S, Denmark). Anatomo-clinical and demographic data were not significantly correlated with the presence of lymph node metastases or p53 expression in the tumor or in the adjacent normal mucosa. Tumor localization in the larynx was significantly correlated with p53 expression. Histological grading as grades I, II, Ill and IV was correlated with significant p53 expression (p = 0.025). Conclusions: 1) in the studied material obtained from 63 cases of head and neck ECs, we detected a 48 percent rate of immunohistochemically detectable p53 overexpression; 2) we did not detect a relationship between demographic patient data and p53 expression in the tumor or in the normal adjacent mucosa; 3) p53 overexpression was significantly more frequent in ECs material from the larynx; and 4) The presence of 12 cases with p53 overexpression in the normal adjacent mucosa and with a p53-negative tumor is in agreement with the theory of field cancerization. Follow-up of this patient series for a longer period of time will permit a better analysis of these values.
