Two processing methods for preparation of microbial biomass-silica biosorbent to remove cadmium ions from aqueous solution were developed. The first method involved a slow addition of sulphuric acid into previously prepared dispersion of viable Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Leuconostoc mesenteroides biomass in sodium silicate solution. The obtained material was mesoporous with irregular shape and size between 1 and 10 μm. The second method for the immobilization of microbial biomass by silica gel entrapment was developed in order to restrict desorption of microbial cells and to obtain larger particles with uniform size. The obtained particles were spherical with average particle size of 1.5 mm. Both materials with viable L. mesenteroides cells displayed higher removal efficiency compared the efficiency of materials that containing viable S. cerevisiae cells. Infrared spectra revealed an intensive secretion of dextran by Leuconostoc mesenteoides cells in the presence of cadmium ions. EDS maps clearly showed the dispersion of cadmium in the cross-section of microbial biomass-silica biosorbent. The maximum theoretical binding adsorption capacity for the silica-alginate-S. cerevisiae composite was 54 mg/g. The adsorption capacity for the silica-alginate-L. mesenteroides composite obtained after 24 cycles was about 93 mg/g. The extracellular secretion of dextran by L. mesenteroides cells immobilized in silica-alginate composite enabled efficient removal of cadmium ions. The efficiency of Cd(II) removal by microbial composite was not affected by the presence of co-existing ions at initial cadmium concentration of 1 and 4 mmol/L.

BACKGROUND: Botswana is an economically stable middle-income country with a developing health system and a large HIV and infectious disease burden. Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) is the largest referral and teaching hospital with a mixed eight-bed intensive care unit (ICUOBJECTIVES: To conduct an audit of PMH ICU in order to investigate major admission categories and quantify morbidity and mortality figures using a validated scoring system for quality improvement, education and planning purposesMETHODS: PMH medical records and laboratory data were accessed to record demographics, referral patterns, diagnoses, HIV status, Acute Physiologic Assessment and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II scores and mortality ratesRESULTS: A total of 182 patients >14 years of age were enrolled over a 12-month period from April 2017 - March 2018. Patient's mean age was 42.9 years, males represented 56.6% of the study population and surgical conditions accounted for 46% of diagnostic categories. Sixty percent of the patients were HIV-negative and 12% had no HIV status recorded. The mean APACHE II score was 25 and the mean length of stay in ICU was 10.3 days. Higher APACHE II scores were associated with higher mortality regardless of HIV status. The overall mortality was 42.8% and there was no difference in mortality rates in ICU or at 30 days between HIV-positive and HIV-negative ICU patient groupsCONCLUSIONS: The PMH ICU population is young with a high mean APACHE II score, significant surgical and HIV burdens and a high mortality rate. PMH ICU has significant logistical challenges making comparison with international ICUs challenging, and further research is warranted

RESUMO: Muitas espécies de animais silvestres de vida livre servem como reservatório de bactérias patogênicas que ameaçam a saúde humana e dos animais domésticos. Algumas bactérias, como Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Yersinia enterocolitica e Salmonella enterica, causam enfermidades em humanos e podem contaminar os animais domésticos e silvestres. O Núcleo de Reabilitação da Fauna Silvestre da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (NURFS-UFPel) soluciona uma demanda regional específica de atenção à fauna silvestre brasileira. O objetivo desse trabalho foi identificar a presença de Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Salmonella spp. e Yersinia enterocolitica em animais silvestres que se encontravam em processo de reabilitação. Foram coletadas amostras de fezes, com uso de zaragatoas estéreis, de 34 aves, 16 mamíferos e 23 répteis. Dos 73 animais amostrados, quatro (5,48%) albergavam Y. enterocolitica, sendo duas aves, um mamífero e um réptil. Salmonella e Campylobacter não foram isolados. Os perfis de bandas dos isolados de Y. enterocolitica analisados pela rep-PCR foram diferentes entre si. Esses resultados indicam que as cepas isoladas não estão relacionadas entre si, não possuindo uma origem comum recente. Vanellus chilensis, Turdus rufiventris, Didelphis albiventris e Pantherophis guttatus podem albergar Y. enterocolitica e eliminá-la nas fezes, oferecendo risco de disseminação desse micro-organismo no ambiente, além de constituírem possíveis fontes de contaminação para humanos e outros animais.

ABSTRACT: Wild animals can transmit pathogenic bacteria to human and domestic animal’s health. Some bacteria, such as Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella enterica, cause diseases in humans and can contaminate domestic and wild animais. The Núcleo de Reabilitação da Fauna Silvestre of Universidade Federal de Pelotas (Nurfs-UFPel) attend a specific regional demand of wildlife in Brazil. The aim of this paper was to identify the presence of these pathogenic bacteria in wild animals in rehabilitation. Stool samples were collected using sterile swabs from 34 birds, 16 mammals and 23 reptilian that were housed at Nurfs. Of the 73 collections, Y. enterocolitica was isolated from four (5.48%) of two birds, one mammal and one reptile. Salmonella and Campylobacter were not isolated. The molecular profile of bands of Y. enterocolitica identified in rep-PCR had differences. These results indicated that the isolates did not have a recent common origin. Pantherophis guttatus, Didelphis albiventris, Turdus rufiventris and Vanellus chilensis could shelt Y. enterocolitica and eliminate the bacteria in stool, offering risk of dissemination of these microorganisms in the environment with possible contamination of humans and other animals.

O trabalho identifica e analisa os mecanismos de coordenação entre operadores logísticos e empresas clientes, na cadeia automotiva, recuperando as principais abordagens sobre parcerias logísticas. Ênfase especial é dedicada ao modelo proposto por Lambert et al. (1996). A metodologia assenta-se na descrição e análise de três estudos de caso. De modo geral, a pesquisa evidenciou um elevado grau de integração entre as empresas clientes pertencentes à indústria de autopeças e os operadores logísticos. Os três casos analisados podem ser enquadrados como tipo III - parceria altamente integrada - apresentando, no entanto, diferenças entre os mecanismos de coordenação utilizados, associados ao tipo e à natureza da parceria.

This paper identifies and analyzes the mechanisms of coordination between logistics operators and client companies in the automotive sector, covering the main approaches in logistic partnerships. Special emphasis is given to the model proposed by Lambert et al. (1996). The methodology is based on the description and analysis of three case studies. This study revealed the existence of a high degree of integration between the client companies and their logistics operators. The three cases analyzed here were identified as type III - highly integrated partnerships, albeit presenting differences among the coordination mechanisms employed, according to the type and nature of the partnership.
