Resumo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a composição florística e estrutural em um trecho de floresta secundária, no município de Dona Francisca - RS. Foram instaladas 50 parcelas permanentes de dimensão 10 x 20 m, de modo sistemático, distanciadas 10 m entre si e 40 m entre faixas, totalizando 1 ha. Foram amostrados todos os indivíduos que apresentassem CAP ≥ 15,7 cm e calculado os estimadores fitossociológicos. Foi realizada a curva de acumulação de espécie para verificar a suficiência amostral. Para o cálculo de diversidade e dominância, utilizou-se o Índice de Shannon (H’) e Equabilidade de Pielou (J’). Para a riqueza potencial utilizaram-se os estimadores não paramétricos Jackknife. Avaliou-se a composição florística e estrutural por meio da Análise de Correspondência Distendida (DCA). Verificou-se, também, a distribuição diamétrica e hipsométrica da comunidade arbórea, e para as espécies, com valor de importância acima de 5 %, a distribuição em classes de DAP. As análises estatísticas foram realizadas no programa R. Foram identificadas 65 espécies arbóreas e arbustivas com 2.045 indivíduos distribuídas em 31 famílias botânicas. As espécies com valor de importância acima de 5% foram Casearia sylvestris (14,04%), Nectandra lanceolata (12,86 %), Cupania vernalis (9,57 %), Guarea macrophylla (7,29 %) e Ocotea puberula (5,07 %). Os valores para a diversidade e dominância foram, respectivamente, de 2,91 nats.ind-1 e 0,69, indicando que a área possui baixa diversidade e dominância de poucas espécies. Pela DCA é possível verificar que as parcelas estão distribuídas homogeneamente no trecho florestal. A distribuição diamétrica representou o esperado para a comunidade arbórea com tendência ao J-invertido e a maioria das árvores apresentou altura concentrada no estrato intermediário da floresta. Das cinco espécies analisadas, apenas Nectandra lanceolata e Ocotea puberula não apresentaram curva exponencial negativa. Foi possível observar que há um predomínio de indivíduos nas primeiras classes de DAP e altura, o que caracteriza a resiliência da área após distúrbio. Ainda, indica as flutuações e estabilidade das espécies, na sucessão ecológica, de uma floresta em estágio intermediário de regeneração.

Abstract The objective of the study was to evaluate the floristic and structural composition of an area located in a section of secondary Forest, in the municipality of Dona Francisca, RS state. To do so, 50 permanent plots with a dimension of 10 x 20 m (200 m2) were installed in a systematic way, 10 m apart and 40 m between tracks, totaling 1 ha. All individuals with CAP ≥ 15.7 cm were identified and sampled and the phytosociological estimators were calculated. The species accumulation curve was used to verify the sample adequacy. For the calculation of diversity and dominance estimators, the Shannon Index (H ‘) and Pielou Equability (J’) were used. Subsequently, the floristic and structural composition was evaluated through the Distributed Correspondence Analysis (DCA). It was also verified the diameter and histopic distribution of the tree community, and for the species, with importance value above 5%, the distribution in classes of DAP. Statistical analyzes were performed in the R program. 65 tree and shrub species were identified with 2,045 individuals distributed in 31 botanical families. The species with a value of importance above 5% were Casearia sylvestris (14, 04 %), Nectandra lanceolata (12, 86 %), Cupania vernalis (9, 57 %), Guarea macrophylla (7,29 %) and Ocotea puberula (5.07 %). The values for diversity and dominance were, respectively, 2.91 nats.ind-1 and 0.69, indicating that the area has low diversity and dominance of few species and that by DCA it is possible to verify that the plots are homogeneously distributed in the forest. The diameter distribution represented the expected behavior for the arboreal community with J-inverted tendency and the majority of the trees presented height concentrated in the middle stratum of the forest. Only Nectandra lanceolata and Ocotea puberula did not present negative exponential curve from the five species analyzed. It was possible to observe the mosaic of tree species distributed in the forest section. In addition, there is a predominance of individuals in the first classes of DBH and height, which characterizes the resilience of the area after the disturbance and its capacity for natural recovery. It also indicates the fluctuations and stability of species in ecological succession of a forest in an intermediate stage of regeneration.

RESUMO Através da variação dos atributos funcionais é possível verificar o funcionamento do ecossistema, tanto pela organização das espécies como pelas respostas das mesmas em relação as variações do ambiente. Nesse sentido, o objetivo foi analisar as características ecológicas das principais espécies arbóreas, pela análise dos atributos funcionais. Utilizou-se uma PCoA para verificar quais espécies são aquisitivas e conservativas; cluster na verificação dos atributos funcionais por grupos; correlação de Pearson entre os atributos funcionais e uma análise CWM-RDA na verificação das variáveis ambientais. A maioria das espécies foram classificadas como clímax exigente de luz e com dispersão zoocórica. As espécies apresentaram a plasticidade fenotípica como importante estratégia ecológica na composição dos seus atributos funcionais, principalmente quando relacionadas a área foliar e área foliar específica. A maioria das espécies pertenceram ao grupo das aquisitivas. O grupo das aquisitivas e conservativas indicam o potencial de resiliência da comunidade arbórea e os processos de mudança na sucessão ecológica. Foi verificada forte correlação negativa entre os atributos foliares e positiva com diâmetro e altura, ambas as correlações relacionadas ao crescimento-desenvolvimento da planta. Das variáveis ambientais, apenas pH, K e cota média tiveram relação com os atributos, indicando ser importantes condições ambientais para o estabelecimento das espécies amostradas. Além disso, verificou-se que a composição de espécies está atrelada a várias condicionantes de estratégias ecológicas associadas com as mudanças no meio ambiente.

ABSTRACT Through the variation of the functional attributes, it is possible to verify the functioning of an ecosystem, both by the species organization as by their responses to the environmental variations. In this sense, the objective of this study was to analyze the ecological strategies of the main tree species by analyzing their functional attributes. PCoA was used to verify which species are acquisitive and conservative; clustering was used to verify the functional attributes by groups; the Pearson’s correlation between the functional attributes and a CWM-RDA analysis was used to verify the environmental variables. Most species were classified as light-demanding climax and having zoochoric dispersion. The species presented phenotypic plasticity as an important ecological strategy in the composition of their functional attributes, especially when related to leaf area and specific leaf area. Most of the species belonged to the acquisitive group. The acquisitive and conservative groups indicate the resilience potential of the tree community and the change processes in ecological succession. There was a strong negative correlation between the leaf attributes, and a positive one with diameter and height, both correlations related to plant growth and development. Of the environmental variables only pH, K, and average elevation, were related to the attributes, indicating that environmental conditions are important for the establishment of the sampled species. Also, it was found that the species composition is linked to several conditions of ecological strategies associated with changes in the environment.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to characterize the floristic-structural heterogeneity of the tree species in an alluvial forest remnant considering three sectors: forest-river edge, forest interior and forest/non-forest matrix edge. Forty-eight plots of 200 m 2 were allocated and all tree individuals with a diameter at breast height (dbh) equal to or greater than 5 cm were measured and identified. Data was analyzed by Shannon’s diversity index, Pielou evenness and phytosociological descriptors. Plots were ordered through NMDS. Sixty-six species were sampled and Myrtaceae was found to be the richest family. Diversity and evenness reached 2.96 and 0.71, respectively. Sebastiania commersoniana (Baill.) L.B.Sm. & Downs presented the highest importance value (21.22%). The NMDS showed that tree components are spatially partitioned according to sectors, therefore indicating floristic-structural heterogeneity.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar a variação de atributos funcionais de espécies arbóreas ao longo de diferentes posições topográficas, em uma floresta subtropical na região do Alto Uruguai, em Santa Catarina. Para as 20 espécies mais abundantes na área amostrada, foram determinados densidade básica da madeira (WD), altura potencial (Hmax), área foliar (LA), área foliar específica (SLA), regime de renovação foliar, guildas de regeneração e de dispersão. A estrutura funcional foi avaliada por meio dos valores dos atributos funcionais por parcela, ponderados para a comunidade (CWM). A partir de um Modelo Digital do Terreno na resolução de 1 m, foram extraídas para cada parcela a elevação, a declividade e curvatura. Os dados foram analisados por meio de correlações lineares, Análise de Coordenadas Principais (PCoA), Análises de Componente Principais (PCA) e modelo linear simples. Os resultados demonstraram correlações significativas e negativas entre Hmax x LA e Hmax x SLA. O gradiente topográfico influenciou de forma significativa a estrutura funcional do componente arbóreo. Conclui-se que a ocupação de diferentes posições no gradiente topográfico e ao longo do perfil vertical da floresta se deve ao fato das espécies apresentarem diferentes estratégias ecológicas.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate functional attributes of tree species along different topographic position, in a forest located in Upper Uruguay region, in Santa Catarina. The wood density (WD), potential height (Hmax), leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaves renovation regime, regeneration and dispersal guilds were determined for the 20 most abundant species in the sampled area. The functional structure was evaluated through a community weight matrix (CWM) of traits values for each sampling unit. Mean values of elevation, declivity and curvature were extracted for each sampling unit, from a Terrain Digital Model in a resolution of 1 m. The data was analyzed through linear correlations, Principal Coordinates Analysis (PCoA), Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and linear simple model. The results indicated significant and negative correlation between Hmax x LA and Hmax x SLA. The topographic gradient significantly influenced the functional structure of tree component. It is concluded that the occupation of different positions along the topographic gradient and the forest vertical profile by tree species were mediated by different ecological strategies.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo descrever atributos funcionais de espécies arbóreas em um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista em Lages - SC, com o propósito de agrupá-las funcionalmente. Para cada uma das 20 espécies mais abundantes na área de estudo foi amostrado um total de 10 indivíduos e determinada a média da densidade da madeira e o tamanho médio das folhas. Dessas espécies, também foi descrito o regime de renovação foliar, a síndrome de dispersão de propágulos e a altura máxima no fragmento. Os resultados de altura máxima e de densidade da madeira sugerem a existência de um trade-off entre o investimento de recursos para o crescimento em altura, garantindo o acesso à maior disponibilidade lumínica, ou em densidade da madeira, permitindo maior capacidade de resistência e sobrevivência em um ambiente sombreado de sub-bosque. As gimnospermas Araucaria angustifolia e Podocarpus lambertii apresentaram as folhas de menor tamanho, enquanto Cupania vernalis, Jacaranda puberula e Matayba elaeagnoides, todas de folhas compostas, apresentam as maiores folhas. Quatro grupos funcionais se destacaram: 1) perenes de folhas grandes, 2) perenes de folhas pequenas, 3) decíduas zoocóricas e 4) decíduas não zoocóricas. Os resultados demonstraram que as espécies mais abundantes do fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista estudado apresentam variações dos atributos funcionais avaliados, sugerindo diferentes estratégias de vida.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to describe the functional traits of tree species in an Araucaria Forest fragment, in the municipality of Lages, SC state, in order to group them functionally. For each of the 20 most abundant species in the study area, a total of 10 individuals were sampled for the determination of the mean wood density and mean leaf size. The leaf renovation regimes, the dispersal syndrome and the maximum height in the fragment were also described for these species. The results of maximum height and wood density suggest the existence of a trade-off between investment of resources in height growth, ensuring access to some higher light availability, or in wood density, allowing for greater resilience and survival in a shaded understory environment. The gymnosperm species, Podocarpus lambertii and Araucaria angustifolia showed smaller leaves, while Cupania vernalis, Jacaranda puberula and Matayba elaeagnoides, all of compound leaves, had larger ones. Four functional groups stood out: 1) Evergreen with large leaves, 2) Evergreen with small leaves, 3) Deciduous with zoochoric syndrome, and 4) Deciduous with non-zoochoric syndrome. The results showed that the most abundant species of the studied Araucaria Forest fragment present functional trait variations, suggesting different life strategies.

RESUMO Os objetivos do presente estudo foram caracterizar a regeneração natural arbórea e relacionar esse estrato com o componente adulto e com variáveis ambientais em um fragmento de floresta nebular em Santa Catarina. Em cada uma das 25 parcelas de 20 × 20 m, onde previamente foi realizado um estudo com caracterização do componente adulto e de variáveis ambientais, foram estabelecidas subparcelas, com tamanhos diferenciados de acordo com o tamanho das plantas, para a avaliação dos regenerantes: Classe 1, plantas com altura de 0,15 cm até 1 m, avaliadas em 5 m2; Classe 2, plantas com altura entre 1 e 3 m, avaliadas em 10 m2, e; Classe 3, plantas com altura maior que 3 m e DAP menor que 5 cm, avaliadas em 20 m2. Foram determinadas: diversidade (índice de Shannon), equabilidade (Pielou), Índice de Regeneração Natural (IRN), similaridade com o componente arbóreo adulto (Jaccard e Bray-curtis), organização florística-estrutural (escalonamento multidimensional não-métrico - NMDS) e relação com as variáveis ambientais. Foram amostrados 518 indivíduos distribuídos em 28 espécies. O valor do índice Shannon (2,51 nat/ind) e da equabilidade de Pielou (0,75) sugerem baixa diversidade e elevada dominância ecológica. A espécie de maior IRN foi Symphyopappus itatiayensis (Hieron.) R.M.King & H.Rob (19,36%). As similaridades com os adultos foram de 0,45 (Jaccard) e 0,24 (Bray-Curtis), demonstrando baixa similaridade (<0,50). A compactação do solo foi a única variável que apresentou relação com a regeneração, o que pode estar relacionado com a presença de gado no fragmento.

ABSTRACT This paper aims at characterizing the tree species natural regeneration and evaluating the relation of this stratum to both the adult component and the environmental variables in a fragment of a cloud forest in Santa Catarina, Brazil. In each of 25 20 × 20 m plots, where the adult component and environmental variables have previously been evaluated, subplots of different sizes varying according to plants' height were then allocated as follows: Class 1 - plants with a height varying from 0.15 cm up to 1 m, being evaluated within 5 m2; Class 2 - plants with a height varying from 1 up to 3 m, being evaluated within 10 m2; Class 3 - plants with a height greater than 3 m and DBH smaller than 5 cm, being evaluated within 20 m2. Data have been analyzed with regard to the determination of diversity (Shannon index), evenness (Pielou), Natural Regeneration Index (NRI), similarity with the adult component (Jaccard and Bray-Curtis), floristic-structural organization (Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling - NMDS) and their relation to environmental variables. A total of 518 individuals distributed in 28 species were sampled. The low values of Shannon index (2.51 nat/ind) and evenness (0.75) suggest low diversity and elevated ecological dominance. The highest NRI has been found in the species Symphyopappus itatiayensis (Hieron.) R.M.King & H.Rob (19.36%). The similarity with the adult component were of 0.45 (Jaccard) and 0.24 (Bray-Curtis), demonstrating a low overall similarity (<0.50). The soil compaction was the only variable that has shown a relation with regeneration, which can be related to cattle's presence in the fragment.

O objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar a composição florística e a estrutura do componente arbóreo em fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Alto-Montana e avaliar a influência do efeito de borda sobre a organização, estrutura, riqueza e diversidade de espécies. Foram alocadas 50 parcelas permanentes de 10 x 20 m, divididas em cinco transeções distanciadas, no mínimo, 100 m entre si, em um fragmento florestal, no município de Bom Jardim da Serra - SC. As árvores com circunferência ≥ 15,7 cm na altura do peito (CAP) foram mensuradas (CAP e altura total), identificadas e classificadas quanto às guildas de regeneração (pioneiras, climácicas exigentes em luz e climácicas tolerantes à sombra). Os dados foram analisados por meio dos índices de valor de importância (IVI), NMDS (Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling), modelo aditivo generalizado e regressões lineares simples. Foram observados 1.457 indivíduos arbóreos, distribuídos em 29 famílias, 43 gêneros e 55 espécies. A espécie com maior valor de importância foi Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. Não foi observada influência do efeito de borda sobre a organização, a estrutura (diâmetro médio, altura média e densidade) da comunidade e participação relativa das guildas de regeneração. No entanto, ficaram evidenciados maiores valores de diversidade, riqueza e equabilidade nas áreas de borda. Desta forma, concluí-se que parte das variações dos valores relativos à diversidade de espécies arbóreas na Floresta Ombrófila Mista Ato-Montana foi determinada pela distância da borda.

The objectives of this study were to characterize the floristic and structure of the tree component in Upper Montane Araucaria Forest fragment and to evaluate the influence of the edge effects on tree species organization, structure, richness and diversity. For this, a total of 50, 10 x 20 m, permanent plots divided in five transects spaced, at least, 100 m from each other, were established in the a forest fragment, located in the municipality of Bom Jardim da Serra, SC. The trees with circumference at breast height (CBH) ≥ 15,7 cm were measured (CBH and total height), identified and classified according to the regeneration guilds. The data were analyzed through the index of importance values (IVI), a NMDS analysis (Nonmetric Multidimensional Scaling), a generalized additive model and simple linear regressions. A total of 1,457 individuals, distributed in 29 families, 43 genera and 55 species were surveyed. The most relative important species was Dicksonia sellowiana Hook. There was no influence of edge effect on tree community organization, structure (average diameter, average height and density) and guilds participation. However, values of diversity, richness and evenness were higher at edge areas. We conclude that part of the variation in values related to tree species diversity in the Upper Montane Araucaria Forest was determined by edge distance.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o processo de restauração em uma Área de Preservação Permanente (APP) degradada em Pouso Redondo, SC, seis anos após o plantio de mudas e proteção da área. Foi realizado o levantamento da vegetação arbórea e, a partir da relação das espécies plantadas inicialmente, foi quantificado o aumento da riqueza que ocorreu por meio do estabelecimento natural de novas espécies. Foram determinadas as síndromes de dispersão de propágulos e as guildas de regeneração. Foram encontrados 918 indivíduos pertencentes a 73 espécies, sendo que 48 (65,8%) não correspondem àquelas que foram plantadas em 2007, tratando-se de novas espécies que se estabeleceram. 71,2% das espécies foram classificadas como zoocóricas e 54,8% como clímax exigente em luz. Após seis anos, o processo de restauração foi caracterizado pela tendência do aumento da riqueza e da substituição de espécies iniciais por tardias, indicando a relevância do mecanismo de regeneração natural.

This study evaluated the process of restoration in a degraded Permanent Preservation Area (PPA) in the municipality of Pouso Redondo, Santa Catarina state, six years after the initial plantation of trees and isolation of the area. Tree species were surveyed and increment of richness by natural establishment was quantified. Syndromes of propagule dispersion and regeneration guilds were determined. A total of 918 individuals from 73 species were found; 48 (65.8%) of them were species naturally established in the area. 71.2% of the species were classified as zoochoric (71.2%), and 54.8% as light demanding for climax. After six years, the restoration process was characterized by a trend of richness increment and replacement of initial by late successional species, indicating the relevance of the natural regeneration mechanism.

Este estudo teve como objetivos avaliar a similaridade florística do componente arbóreo de 39 remanescentes de florestas superomontanas no domínio atlântico, Brasil, e analisar a influência de variáveis geográficas e climáticas sobre os padrões observados. Foi utilizada uma matriz binária de presença e ausência das espécies arbóreas compiladas dos 39 levantamentos florísticos e fitossociológicos. Para conhecer a relação da composição florística das áreas com variáveis ambientais e espaciais, foram extraídas as coordenadas geográficas e os dados climáticos de cada área. Com o objetivo de avaliar a similaridade florística dos remanescentes, foi utilizado um dendrograma e, para determinar a influência de variáveis ambientais e espaciais sobre os padrões florísticos, foi utilizada a análise multivariada NMDS. O dendrograma e a NMDS demonstraram a formação de agrupamentos, predominantemente entre remanescentes localizados em uma mesma unidade fitogeográfica. Observou-se a existência de um gradiente ambiental ligado às condições climáticas. Em áreas com maiores valores de sazonalidade térmica, amplitude térmica anual, precipitação, latitude e longitude, ocorreram florestas superomontanas com matriz ombrófila e, em áreas com maiores valores de temperatura média, amplitude térmica diária, isotermalidade, sazonalidade da precipitação e temperatura mínima no mês mais frio, ocorreram predominantemente florestas com matriz estacional.

This study investigated the floristic similarity of the tree component of 39 upper montane forest fragments in Atlantic domain, Brazil, and the influence of geographic and climatic variables on the patterns observed. It was created a binary matrix of presence and absence of the tree species compiled from the 39 floristic and phytosociological survey. For the relationship of the floristic composition of the areas with the environmental and spatial variables, the geographic coordinates and climate data of each area were extracted. The floristic similarity of the fragments was measured using a dendrogram and for determination of environmental and spatial variables influence on floristic patterns, a nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis (NMDS) was used. The dendrogram analysis and the NMDS showed the formation of clusters, predominantly among fragments located in the same phytogeographic unit. The existence of an environmental gradient based on the climatic conditions was observed. In areas with higher thermal seasonality, annual temperature range, precipitation, latitude and longitude, upper montane forests with rain forest matrix occurred, and in areas with higher average temperature, daily temperature range, isothermality, seasonality of precipitation and minimum temperature in the coldest month, upper montane forests with seasonal matrix occurred.
