Abstract Introduction: There is currently a growing demand for hydrocarbons, which has led to the use of non-dynamic technologies, such as hydraulic fracturing. However, this technique causes environmental damages to ecosystems due to the generation of sewage sludge such as the thorny Tamaulipas scrubland that is located within the Burgos basin, an area of economic relevance for conventional gas exploitation. The objective of the study was to evaluate the germination of Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd and Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby and its potential use with biostimulation in the removal of As, Cd and Zn in sewage sludge from the extraction of shale gas. Method: Seeds of Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd and Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby were collected in the ejido El Zaus, municipality of Hidalgo, Tamaulipas. The germination index (GI) was evaluated according to Zucconi. Twenty-three treatments were set by considering the substrates (two types of slugde, soil and a mixture of both substrates), the two species of seedlings (Acacia and Ebenopsis), and the biostimulation with a 46% urea solution. Pots of 3 kg were used as experimental units, in where three seedlings were planted with three replicates per treatment. A final sampling of each treatment was performed for the corresponding determinations of As, Cd, Zn, P and K, which were carried out by extraction of DTPA, and subsequently carried out by plasma induction atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES Varian model 725-ES, Agilent Mulgrave, Australia). The total nitrogen (Nt) in seedlings and substrates, was carried out using the micro Kjeldahl method, and organic matter (OM) content was estimated by Walkely Black method. Results: Differences in IG were observed (P = 0.02374). Results indicated that the structural (size) and physiological (embryo viability) characteristics of the seeds are related to the germination capacity of both species under contaminated substrates. Significant differences were found in the concentrations of As, Cd, and Zn, through treatment (P <0.0001). The accumulation of As, Cd and Zn, was determined by the structure of the plant (root > stem > leaf). Conclusion: Germination index of Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd and Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby in aqueous substrates of residual sludge is based on structural and physiological characteristics of each species. Removal of As, Cd and Zn, was influenced by the species, the substrate, the urea biostimulation, and the presence of OM, which confer the plug effect that controls the alkalinity of the substrates and therefore, the mobility of the metals.

Resumen Introducción: En la actualidad, existe una creciente demanda de hidrocarburos, lo que ha provocado el empleo de tecnologías no convencionales como la fracturación hidráulica. Sin embargo, esta técnica ocasiona daños ambientales a los ecosistemas por la generación de lodos residuales, como es el caso del matorral espinoso tamaulipeco que se encuentra dentro de la cuenca de burgos, zona de relevancia económica para la explotación de gas convencional. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la germinación de Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd y Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby y su uso potencial con bioestimulación, en la remoción de As, Cd y Zn en lodos residuales provenientes de la extracción de gas shale. Método: Se colectaron semillas de Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd y Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby en el ejido El Zaus, municipio de Hidalgo, Tamaulipas. Se evaluó el índice de germinación (IG) de acuerdo con Zucconi. Los tratamientos fueron 23, considerando los sustratos (dos tipos de lodo, suelo y una mezcla de ambos sustratos), las dos especies de plántulas (Acacia y Ebenopsis) y la bioestimulación donde se utilizó una solución de urea al 46 %. Se utilizaron macetas de tres kilogramos como unidades experimentales, donde se sembraron tres plántulas con tres repeticiones por tratamiento. Se realizó un muestreo final de cada tratamiento para las determinaciones correspondientes de As, Cd, Zn, P y K, las cuales se realizaron por extracción de (DTPA), y posteriormente se llevaron a espectroscopia de emisión atómica de inducción por plasma (ICP-OES Varian modelo 725-ES, Agilent Mulgrave, Australia). El Nitrógeno total, en plántulas y sustratos, se realizó por el método micro Kjeldahl, y la materia orgánica (MO) por Walkely Black. Resultados: Se observaron diferencias en IG (P = 0.02374). Los resultados indican que las características estructurales (tamaño) y fisiológicas (viabilidad del embrión) de las semillas están relacionadas con la capacidad de germinación de estas especies en sustratos contaminados. Se encontraron diferencias significativas en la concentración de As, Cd, y Zn, a través del tratamiento (P < 0.0001). La acumulación de As, Cd y Zn, fue determinada por la estructura de la planta (raíz > tallo >hoja). Conclusión: El índice de germinación de Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd y Ebenopsis ebano (Berl.) Barneby, en sustratos acuosos de lodos residuales provenientes de la extracción de gas shale, se sustenta en las características estructurales y fisiológicas de cada especie. La remoción de As, Cd y Zn, estuvo influenciada por la especie, el sustrato, la bioestimulación con la urea y la presencia de MO que confiere el efecto tapón que controló la alcalinidad de los sustratos y, por ende, la movilidad de los metales.

RESUMO: No presente estudo investigamos a relação da afiliação etnolinguística com a diversidade genética de variedades locais de tomate na região Centro-Sul do México. Um total de 30 variedades de tomate, coletadas em 18 aldeias com diferentes afiliações etnolinguísticas, foram analisadas. Verificamos que a diversidade genética das variedades crioulas de tomate está associada ao grupo etnolinguístico presente na região estudada. Nossos resultados mostram que existem diferenças morfológicas entre raças cultivadas por diferentes grupos etnolinguísticos. No entanto, também houve evidências de semelhanças morfológicas entre raças de grupos com diferentes afiliações etnolinguísticas. Finalmente, diferentes critérios de seleção, como, principalmente, cor, tamanho e forma dos frutos, desempenham um papel importante na divergência fenotípica entre as variedades crioulas cultivadas em diferentes sistemas agrícolas tradicionais.

ABSTRACT: In the present study, we investigated the influence of social and environmental factors in the genetic diversity of tomato landraces in the South-Central region of Mexico. A total of 30 tomato landraces, collected in 18 villages with different ethnolinguistic affiliations, were analyzed. We reported that the genetic diversity of tomato landraces is associated with the ethnolinguistic group, weather, and soil-type present in the region studied. Our results showed that there are morphological differences between landraces grown by different ethnolinguistic groups; however, there was also evidence of morphological similarities between landraces from groups with different ethnolinguistic affiliations. Finally, different selection criteria, mainly fruit color, size and shape, plays an important role in the phenotypic divergence among landraces grown in different traditional farming systems.

This research aimed to determine richness on ethnobotanical knowledge possessed by inhabitants of two local communities. For this, 30% of the inhabitants of both localities (66 people in total) were randomly interviewed, and two participatory community workshops (one per locality) were performed. We identified 156 useful taxa corresponding to 62 botanical families. Richness on ethnobotanical knowledge (RQZ) in both communities is similar, observing a homogeneous level of knowledge in different age groups of both communities. Only in the Alta Cima community there is a significant difference in the age group from 41 to 50 years. Those who know more about useful plants are men (in Alta Cima), while in San Jose the values between men and women are similar. Most useful species are native to both communities, although there is a greater percentage of exogenous species claimed in San Jose. The empirical knowledge of plant species, which persists to this day, and more notably in rural communities, is the direct result of the uses that humans have given these plants.

El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la riqueza de conocimiento etnobotánico que poseen habitantes de dos comunidades locales. Para ello se realizaron entrevistas al azar al 30% de los habitantes de ambas localidades (66 personas en total) y dos talleres participativos comunitarios (uno por localidad). Se identificaron 156 taxones útiles correspondientes a 62 familias botánicas. La riqueza de conocimiento (RQZ) en ambas comunidades es similar, observándose un nivel de conocimiento homogéneo en los diferentes grupos etarios de ambas comunidades. Sólo en la comunidad de Alta Cima existe una diferencia significativa en el grupo etario de 41 a 50 años. Quienes conocen más sobre plantas útiles son los hombres (en Alta Cima), mientras que en San José son similares los valores entre hombres y mujeres. La mayoría de las especies útiles son nativas en ambas comunidades, aunque hay un mayor porcentaje de especies exógenas demandadas en San José. El conocimiento empírico de las especies vegetales, el cual persiste hasta el día de hoy, y en forma más notaria en comunidades rurales, es el resultado directo de los usos que el ser humano ha dado esas plantas.

Abstract: In treatment of wastewater produced as known sediment sludge that could be used in agriculture. The objective was to verify phytomineralization process with Phragmites closure and ecological wastewater treatment. Four treatment plants (La Fontina, El Oratoio, Colle di Compito and El Pittini) were chosen in Pisa, Italy. Samplings were conducted May to November. During preparation of systems and processes percolation, mineralization and humification of organic material was observed. Specific laboratory analyzes were performed. Results indicate that mineralization of organic carbon content, total nitrogen, and organic matter in each sample decreases from 47% to 32% and carbon content of humic significantly decreased (p < 0.05). The product obtained is pre-humidified, suitable to be subjected to a composting process and subsequently used as fertilizer.

Resumen: En el tratamiento de las aguas residuales se producen sedimentos conocidos como lodos residuales que podrían ser utilizados en la agricultura. El objetivo fue verificar el proceso de fitomineralización con Phragmites como cierre ecológico del tratamiento de aguas residuales. Se eligieron cuatro plantas de tratamiento (La Fontina, El Oratoio, Colle di Compito y El Pittini) en Pisa, Italia. Se realizaron muestreos de mayo a noviembre. Se verificó el curso de la preparación de los sistemas y los procesos de percolación, mineralización y humificación del material orgánico. En laboratorio se realizaron análisis específicos. Los resultados de mineralización indican que el contenido de carbono orgánico, nitrógeno total y materia orgánica decrece en cada muestreo de 47% a 32%, y el contenido de carbono húmico disminuye significativamente (p < 0.05). El producto que se obtiene es prehumificado, apto para ser sometido a un proceso de compostaje, y posteriormente utilizarse como fertilizante.

Air temperature is the most related factor to plant growth and development. There are few investigations reported for growing cactus in northern Mexico that address modeling degree days with biomass production under hydroponic conditions. The objectives of this study were: i) production modeling of cactus pear related to fresh (PF) and dry (PS) biomass, with air temperature; and ii) estimate the rate of biomass growth in a closed hydroponic system. The experiment was conducted in (2009) in Marin, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The variety "Villanueva" was used, with a population density of 16 plants m-2, a substrate of river sand and a complete nutrient solution. Irrigation was made every third day and the solution was renewed every week. The average values of temperature, relative humidity and degree day in the harvest period were: 29 ºC, 55% RH and 558.2 degree days, respectively. Only two cladodes were left to maturity on the mother cladode and from them were harvested each week all shoots when they reached 15 cm or more in length. The ratio of PF, PS vs. degree days (GD) variables were adjusted to quadratic polynomials with R²= 0.83 and 0.91, respectively; the rate of increase was variable during the crop production cycle. The average monthly production of 16 plants was 4.36 and 0.72 kg m-2 of PF and PS, respectively.

La temperatura del aire es el factor que más se relaciona con el crecimiento y desarrollo vegetal. Son pocas las investigaciones reportadas para el cultivo de nopal verdura en el norte de México que abordan el modelado de los grados día con la producción de biomasa en condiciones hidropónicas. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: i) modelar la producción de nopal verdura relacionando la biomasa fresca (PF) y seca (PS), con la temperatura del aire; y ii) estimar la tasa de crecimiento de biomasa en un sistema hidropónico cerrado. El experimento se realizó en (2009) en Marín, Nuevo León, México. Se usó la variedad "Villanueva", con una densidad de población de 16 plantas m-2, un sustrato de arena de rio y una solución nutritiva completa. Se rego cada tercer día y la solución fue renovada cada semana. Los valores promedio de temperatura, humedad relativa y grados día en el período de cosecha fueron: 29 ºC, 55% HR y 558.2 grados día, respectivamente. Se dejaron madurar solo dos cladodios sobre el cladodio madre y a partir de ellos se cosecharon cada semana todos los brotes cuando alcanzaron 15 cm o más de longitud. La relación de las variables PF, PS vs. grados-día (GD) se ajustó a polinomios cuadráticos con R2= 0.83 y 0.91, respectivamente; la tasa de incremento fue variable durante el ciclo productivo del cultivo. La producción promedio mensual de las 16 plantas fue de 4.36 y 0.72 kg m-2 de PF y PS, respectivamente.

El empleo de fertilizantes nitrogenados y de aguas residuales no tratadas de origen urbano por los cultivos es una necesidad agronómica, económica y ambiental. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la respuesta del cultivo de trigo a la aplicación de diferentes fertilizantes nitrogenados, irrigado con agua residual y de pozo. Se utilizó un suelo Vertisol Háplico. Se usó como cultivo indicador trigo variedad Tlaxcala F2000. Los fertilizantes aplicados fueron: Fertilizante comercial (FC) constituido por Fosfato monoamónico + urea, Fertilizante orgánico (FO) Vermicomposta; y Fertilizante de lenta liberación (FL) combinación de: urea, H2PO4 y arcilla. La mezcla contiene N y P, 8.08 y 6.3 % en peso, respectivamente. Los tratamientos se diseñaron para probar el efecto simple de cada uno de estos materiales y la combinación de FL+FO. La dosis de fertilización de N y P fue (280-80-0). Con los datos de los análisis de laboratorio de N y P de las plantas, se calculó la eficiencia de recuperación de estos nutrimentos. Las interacciones fechas de Muestreo por agua y fertilizante por agua, fueron significativas al (p<0.05), para la biomasa fresca y seca en el cultivo experimental, asimismo se obtuvo mayor número de granos al irrigar con agua residual.

The use of nitrogen phosphorous fertilizers and untreated sewage from urban areas by crops is an agronomic, economic and environmental necessity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of growing wheat to the application of different nitrogen fertilizers, irrigated with wastewater and well water. Haplic Vertisol soil was used. Was used as indicator crop wheat variety Tlaxcala F2000. Fertilizers applied were: commercial fertilizer (CF) consisting of monoammonium phosphate + urea, organic fertilizer (FO) Vermicomposta, and slow release fertilizer (FL) combination of: urea, H2PO4 and clay. The mixture contains N and P, 8.08 and 6.3 wt%, respectively. The treatments were designed to test the effect of each single one of these materials and the combination FL + FO. The fertilization of N and P was (280-80-0). With the laboratory analysis data of N and P of the plants, the recovery efficiency of these nutrients was calculated. Dates of Sampling Water and Fertilizer water interactions were significant at (p < 0.05) for fresh and dry biomass in the experimental cultivation also increased the number of grains by irrigating with wastewater.

The study of N2O emission originated by the combination of different types of fertilizers and water on rizospheric soil, and non- rizospheric soil along the crop cycle, can contribute to useful knowledge in order to increase fertilizer and manure N recovery efficiency and to reduce the N loss by denitrification. The efficient use of nitrogen fertilizers and non- treated urban waste water for crops is an agronomic, economic and environmental need. The denitrification is an important factor that diminishes the N efficiency in crops. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the denitrification of a slow release fertilizer using as reference urea plus monoamonium phosphate and an organic fertilizer, applied to wheat irrigated with urban waste water or well water. Analyses were made in the vertisol type soil used in the experiment with both, rizospheric and non-rizospheric soil. The slow release fertilizer used has a matrix enriched with N and P and its patent is currently in progress. Each fertilizer was evaluated alone, as well as the slow release fertilizer plus organic fertilizer. The samples of rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soils for each treatment were collected at 55, 67 and 97 days after sowing and incubated during 18 days at 25 °C, controlling the soil humidity daily. The results (p < 0.05) showed that the interactions between samplings and types of water, samplings and fertilizers, and types of water and fertilizers affected (p < 0.06) the emission of N2O, which was increased when urea plus monoamonium phosphate and waste water were applied. On average, there was less N2O when emissions slow release fertilizer or organic fertilizer were applied and irrigated with well water as compared to irrigation with waste water. As well, use of waste water was, on average, associated with a bigger loss of N. The highest average emission in N2O was observed 67 days after sowing. The average denitrification was similar in the rhizospheric and non-rhizospheric soil.

El estudio de la emisión de óxido nitroso (N2O) producto de la combinación de tipos de fertilizante y agua en suelo rizosférico, y no rizosférico a lo largo del ciclo del cultivo, puede generar conocimiento que contribuya a incrementar la eficiencia de recuperación del N de los fertilizantes o abonos y a reducir las pérdidas de nitrógeno (N) por desnitrificación. El empleo eficiente de fertilizantes nitrogenados y de aguas residuales no tratadas de origen urbano por los cultivos es una necesidad agronómica, económica y ambiental. La desnitrificación es un factor importante que generalmente disminuye la eficiencia del N aplicado a los cultivos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar la desnitrificación de un fertilizante de lenta liberación usando como referencia urea+fosfato monoamónico y fertilizante orgánico, en trigo irrigado con agua residual o de pozo. Se efectuaron análisis en el suelo vertisol empleado en el experimento con la fracción rizosférica y no rizosférica. El fertilizante de lenta liberación usado tiene una matriz enriquecida con N y fósforo (P) y se encuentra en proceso de ser patentado. Se evaluó cada fertilizante y la combinación del fertilizante de lenta liberación con fertilizante orgánico. Las muestras de suelo rizosférico y no rizosférico fueron colectadas a los 55, 67 y 97 días después de la siembra, se incubaron durante 18 días a una temperatura de 25 °C controlando diariamente la humedad. Los resultados (p < 0.05) arrojaron que las interacciones entre: muestreos y tipos de agua, muestreos y fertilizantes y tipos de agua y fertilizantes afectaron (p < 0.06) la emisión de N2O, la cual se incrementó al aplicar urea+fosfato monoamónico junto con agua residual. En promedio existió menos emisión de N2O al aplicar fertilizante de lenta liberación o fertilizante orgánico al irrigar con agua de pozo que con agua residual. El uso de agua residual en promedio se asoció con una mayor pérdida de N. La mayor emisión promedio de N2O ocurrió a los 67 días después de la siembra. La desnitrificación promedio fue similar en el suelo rizosférico y no rizosférico.

ABSTRACT The use of chemical and organic nitrogen fertilizers and its relationship to environmental contamination implies the necessity of implementing alternatives that may reduce nitrogen losses from soil and hence increase nitrogen use efficiency by crops. Fertirrigation is a technique of water and fertilizers application that improves fertilizers use efficiency. There are no reports on fertirrigation effects on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions or denitrification. The objective of the present work was to study the effect of fertirrigation and conventional fertilization on denitrification and verify if fertirrigation can reduce N2O emissions to the atmosphere. N2O was trapped in situby the method adapted by Grageda (1999) and Vivanco (2000). The samples of N2O were taken at 2, 24, 48, and 72 h after irrigation. Soil temperature was taken with a regular thermometer approximately at 10 cm of soil depth. Soil water (0-12 cm) was monitored by using a DT Delta - T device, type ML2 ThetaProbe. N2O quantification was carried out by gas chromatography. Statistical analysis and figures were developed using the SAS soft ware (SAS 1998). The figures and results obtained demonstrated that soil water strongly affected N2O emission since there were significant differences at 2, 24, 48, and 72 h after irrigation compared to conventional fertilization and irrigation. In spite of the fact that differences between systems were not significant, N2O emission for fertirrigation was 0.69 and 2.82 for conventional fertilization at 48 and 72 h. The temperature registered along crop growing season were lower than optimum temperature for denitrification, and it is believed that low temperature decreases denitrification. Soil pH ranged from 8.0 to 8.4, which is significantly higher than optimum for denitrificacion and this may affect negatively N2O emissions in conventional and fertirrigation nitrogen fertilization.

RESUMEN El relacionar el uso de fertilizantes químicos u orgánicos nitrogenados con la contami nación ambiental, implica adoptar alternativas que reduzcan las pérdidas de nitrógeno (N) del suelo que podría ser utilizado por los cultivos. La fertirrigación es una técnica de aplicación de agua y fertilizante que mejora la eficiencia en el uso de los fertilizantes mediante el riego por goteo. No existen reportes sobre como la fertirrigación afecta a la desnitrificación. El objetivo del presente trabajo es estudiar cómo afectan la fertirrigación y la fertilización convencional a la desnitrificación y verificar si, efectivamente, es posi ble reducir las emisiones de óxido nitroso (N2O) hacia la atmósfera. Se utilizó la captura de N2O in situpor el método adaptado por Grageda (1999) y Vivanco (2000). Las mues tras de N2O se tomaron a las 2, 24, 48 y 72 h después del riego. La temperatura del suelo se midió con un termómetro aproximadamente a 10 cm de profundidad del suelo. La humedad del suelo (0 -12 cm) se determinó con la ayuda de un instrumento DT Delta- T devices, tipo ML2 ThetaProbe. La cuantificación de N2O fue por cromatografía de gases. Los cálculos y análisis estadístico se efectuaron con el paquete estadístico SAS (SAS 1998). Los resultados obtenidos para la emisión de N2O manifiestan que el factor que más influyó en el sistema de riego convencional fue la humedad ya que existió una diferencia significativa a las 2, 24 y 48 h después del riego con respecto al fertirriego (riego por goteo). A pesar de que estadísticamente no hubo diferencia significativa en la emisión de N2O entre sistemas se obtuvo una concentración en riego por goteo de 0.69 y 2.82 mM menor que en el sistema convencional a las 48 y 72 h. Las temperaturas registradas a lo largo del desarrollo del cultivo estuvieron por debajo de las reportadas, por lo que se asume que este factor influyó en la disminución de la producción de N2O. Con respecto al pH del suelo se trabajó en un rango de 8.0 a 8.4, promedio superior al reportado como pH óptimo para el crecimiento de brócoli por lo que probablemente también influyó en la emisión de NO en el sistema convencional y en el fertirriego.
