ABSTRACT: The present study identified virulence genes and pathological changes caused by Escherichia coli in chicken carcasses condemned for airsacculitis and assessed if the histopathological examination and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were effective for studies like this. Trachea, liver, and lung were collected from 30 chickens with suspected airsacculitis that has been condemned in the inspection line. The samples were analyzed by PCR to simultaneously identify two virulence genes (iss and tsh genes) and for histopathological testing. PCR efficiently genotypically characterize the E. coli isolates, where the virulence genes iss and tsh were found in three birds simultaneously. The histopathological examination detected a predominance of heterophils and mononuclear cells in the trachea (100%), lung (90%), and liver (13.3%). The liver was the organ where practically no alteration was diagnosed. The results of multiplex PCR for the tsh and iss virulence genes indicate the great potential of the approach in the characterization of E. coli isolates. Unspecific identification did not occur, thus making it necessary to use technologies for the identification and prevention of this agent in aviaries and poultry abattoirs.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar genes de virulência e alterações patológicas provocadas por Escherichia coli em carcaças de frango condenadas por aerossaculite e se o exame histopatológico e uma Reação em Cadeia da Polimerase (PCR) são eficazes para os estudos dessa natureza. Para isso, foram coletados traqueia, fígado e pulmão de 30 frangos condenados na linha de inspeção, com suspeita de aerossaculite. As amostras foram submetidas a PCR para a identificação de dois genes de virulência de modo simultâneo (genes iss e tsh) e ao teste histopatológico. A PCR foi eficiente para caracterizar genotipicamente os isolados de E. coli, em que se constatou em três aves os genes de virulência iss e tsh simultaneamente. No exame histopatológico detectou-se a predominância de heterófilos e mononucleares na traqueia 100%, no pulmão 90% e no fígado 13,3%. O fígado foi o órgão onde praticamente não foi diagnosticada nenhuma alteração. Diante dos resultados obtidos, foi possível observar que a PCR multiplex para os genes de virulência tsh e iss apresenta um grande potencial na caracterização de isolados de E. coli, já que não gerou identificação inespecífica, com isso faz-se necessária a utilização de tecnologias para identificação e prevenção desse agente nos aviários e matadouros avícolas.

Abstract Non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis, previously known as atypical, anonymous, opportunistic, or unclassified mycobacteriosis, refers to pathogenic mycobacterioses other than those caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae. These mycobacteria are known for their environmental distribution, mainly in water and soil. The incidence of non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis has been increasing in all countries and skin infections are being increasingly studied, mainly with the increase in immunosuppressive conditions and the development of new medications that affect immunological function. In the present article, a detailed narrative review of the literature is carried out to study the main non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis that cause diseases of the skin and appendages. The article also aims to present a historical context, followed by epidemiological, microbiological, and clinical characteristics of these diseases. Practical considerations about the diagnosis and treatment of non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis are detailed.

Abstract Microbiological safety of fish is a concern of consumers, industries and regulatory agencies worldwide. Among the pathogenic microorganisms, Salmonella spp. is one of the main agents of foodborne diseases and should be absent in animal products. Rapid and accurate identification of pathogens in the supply chain is important for both quality assurance and tracking infectious agents within the chain. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the equivalence of two rapid detection tests, as alternative methods to the conventional Salmonella detection method, as well as to verify the microbiological quality parameters of two commercially important fish species in the Amazon biome. The plate count of aerobic bacteria ranged from 7.76 x 104 to 8.71 x 107 CFU.g-1 for mesophiles and 1.70 x 106 to 4.27 x 108 CFU.g-1 for psychrotrophic whereas the maximum for this group of microorganisms in fresh fish is 106 CFU.g-1. Regarding the Staphylococcus count, the two species presented variations between 1.35 x 104 to 1.51 x 105 CFU.g-1. This represents unsatisfactory conditions of handling, storage and conservation of fish species. The immunoenzymatic and molecular methods have been shown to be reliable, fast and effective in the detection of Salmonella and for its high index of agreement with the conventional detection method. We also emphasize the convenience of multiplex PCR application due to the high sensitivity, specificity, speed and accuracy of Salmonella detection.

RESUMO A doença de Chagas, enfermidade causada pelo protozoário Trypanosoma cruzi, tem sido relacionada com frequência à transmissão oral pelo consumo de açaí. Métodos moleculares que fornecem uma identificação rápida e precisa do patógeno para a detecção da presença do parasita são de extrema importância para a detecção da presença do parasita neste alimento. Este estudo teve como objetivo otimizar a detecção de DNA de T. cruzi em polpa de açaí por meio da reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). Foram preparadas várias diluições das formas tripomastigotas de T. cruzi DTU TcI cultivadas em meio de cultivo Liver Infusion Tryptose. O DNA de T. cruzi foi extraído das células e submetido à PCR. Posteriormente, as diluições da cultura foram adicionadas às polpas de açaí para avaliar o limite de detecção do novo ensaio de PCR otimizado. Mostramos que nosso ensaio pode detectar DNA de T. cruzi em polpas de açaí na concentração de 1.08 × 10-10 ng µL-1. Concluímos que a metodologia desenvolvida se mostra eficaz e pode ser uma ferramenta importante para a detecção de contaminação por T. cruzi em açaí.

ABSTRACT Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, has often been linked to oral transmission through açai consumption. Molecular methods that allow fast and accurate identification of the pathogen are important for the detection of the presence of the parasite in this food. This study aimed to optimize polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection of T. cruzi DNA in açai pulp. Several dilutions of T. cruzi DTU TcI trypomastigote forms were cultured in liver infusion tryptose (LIT) medium. Trypanosoma cruzi DNA was extracted from the cells and subjected to PCR. Subsequently, culture dilutions were added to açai pulp to evaluate the detection threshold of the optimized PCR assay. We demonstrate that our assay can detect T. cruzi DNA in açai pulp at a concentration of 1.08 × 10-10 ng µL-1. We conclude that our optimized protocol is effective and can be used as an important tool for the detection of T. cruzi contamination in açaí.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever um caso de salmonelose em um peixe-boi-da-amazônia (Trichechus inunguis). O animal foi resgatado em um afluente do rio Capim, no município de Goianésia do Pará, Pará, Brasil, sendo mantido em uma piscina e morrendo aproximadamente cinco meses após o resgate. As principais alterações observadas na necropsia foram ceco e colón com hiperemia da serosa; edema da parede; mucosa espessada, com áreas ulceradas e revestida por uma fina camada de fibrina; e conteúdo líquido amarelado. Histologicamente havia tiflocolite fibrinonecrótica, multifocal, moderada, associada a intensa colonização bacteriana. Em fragmentos de ceco e cólon foi isolada Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica (rugosa). Este é o primeiro relato de salmonelose em peixe-boi-da-amazônia.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to describe a case of salmonellosis in an Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis). The animal was rescued from a tributary of the Capim River, in the municipality of Goianésia do Pará, Pará, Brazil, kept in a pool, and died approximately five months after being rescued. The main changes observed at necropsy were that the cecum and colon had serosal hyperemia, wall edema, thickened mucosa with ulcerated areas and covered by a thin layer of fibrin, and a yellowish liquid content. Histologically, there was moderate multifocal fibrinonecrotic typhlocolitis associated with intense bacterial colonization. Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica (rough) was isolated in cecum and colon fragments. This is the first report of salmonellosis in an Amazonian manatee.

Resumo A pasteurização compreende uma etapa de suma importância para eliminação de patógenos no leite e, a fim de manter a inocuidade do alimento, o controle desse processo é fundamental do ponto de vista da segurança alimentar. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a aplicabilidade e a sensibilidade dos procedimentos de detecção da fosfatase alcalina em leite bovino, bubalino e caprino, experimentalmente pasteurizados e fraudados com alíquotas de leite cru. O leite foi pasteurizado e acrescido de leite cru nas seguintes percentagens: 0,1%; 0,25%; 0,5%; 0,75%; 1%; 3%; 5% e 7%; 10%; 50%, além da adoção dos controles: negativo (leite pasteurizado) e positivo (leite cru). Os métodos utilizados foram: a metodologia oficial da legislação brasileira, tiras colorimétricas e kit de reagentes. Os resultados demonstraram que nos testes realizados com leite bubalino houve uma discreta reação quando utilizados o kit de reagentes e as tiras colorimétricas, ao passo que a metodologia segundo a legislação se apresentou pouco eficiente. Para o leite caprino a enzima não foi detectada nas amostras de leite testadas por nenhuma das metodologias adotadas. Já para o leite bovino o procedimento mais sensível para detectar porções mínimas de leite cru foi o da legislação brasileira. A metodologia da legislação brasileira é a que possui maior sensibilidade para acusar a presença da fosfatase alcalina no leite bovino, e os procedimentos para o controle da pasteurização em leite bovino não possuem a mesma eficácia para os leites bubalino e caprino que, neste caso, precisam ser otimizadas.

Abstract Pasteurization is a very important step for eliminating pathogens in milk and keeping the food-safe, the control of this process is fundamental from the point of view of food safety. Thus, the objective of this work was to verify the applicability and sensitivity of the alkaline phosphatase detection procedures in bovine, buffalo, and goat milk, experimentally pasteurized and defrauded with raw milk aliquots. The milk was pasteurized and added raw milk in the following percentages: 0.1%; 0.25%; 0.5%; 0.75%; 1%; 3%; 5% and 7%, 10%, 50%, besides the adoption of the controls: negative (pasteurized milk) and positive (raw milk). The methods used were: the official methodology of the Brazilian legislation, colorimetric strips, and a reagent kit. The results showed that in the tests performed with buffalo milk, there was a slight reaction when using the reagent kit and the colorimetric strips, while the methodology according to the legislation was inefficient. For goat milk, the enzyme was not detected in the milk samples tested by any of the adopted methodologies. For bovine milk, the most sensitive procedure to detect minimal portions of raw milk was the Brazilian legislation. The methodology of the Brazilian legislation is the one with the highest sensitivity to acknowledge the presence of alkaline phosphatase in bovine milk and the procedures for the control of pasteurization in bovine milk do not have the same efficacy for buffalo and goat milk that, in both it is necessary to be optimized.

RESUMO: O leite bubalino é rico em nutrientes e pode servir de substrato para a proliferação de micro-organismos. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a cinética de crescimento de Salmonella Typhimurium e Listeria monocytogenes em leite bubalino, em diferentes condições de processamento e armazenamento. Para isso, utilizaram-se amostras de leite cru e pasteurizado, que foram inoculadas com 1 UFC/25 mL de cada bactéria separadamente e em conjunto. Após a contaminação, as amostras foram armazenadas nas temperaturas de 8 ºC e 37 ºC e realizadas contagens bacterianas em 24, 48 e 168h. Além disso, foi acompanhado o crescimento da microbiota acompanhante, o pH e o efeito dessas variáveis sobre a cinética de crescimento dos micro-organismos. Os patógenos testados conseguiram se proliferar na maioria das condições testadas, atingindo altos títulos durante todo o período experimental. Na temperatura de 37 ºC, houve uma diminuição do pH e um aumento da microbiota acompanhante, o que interferiu na curva de crescimento microbiana. Observou-se também que o leite pasteurizado e submetido a 8 ºC possibilitou melhores condições para a multiplicação das bactérias. Sendo assim, concluiu-se que cuidados durante toda a cadeia de produção, armazenamento e comercialização do leite devem ser adotados para garantir a segurança microbiológica desse alimento.

ABSTRACT: Buffalo milk is rich in nutrients and can serve as a substrate for the proliferation of microorganisms. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the growth kinetics of Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes in buffalo milk under different processing and storage conditions. Samples of raw and pasteurized milk were inoculated with 1 CFU of each bacterium, separately and together, per 25 mL. After contamination, samples were stored at 8 °C or 37 °C, and bacterial counts were performed at 24, 48, and 168 h. In addition, the accompanying microbiota growth, pH, and the effect of these variables on the growth kinetics of microorganisms were monitored. The pathogens tested were able to proliferate under most conditions tested, reaching high titers throughout the experimental period. At 37 °C, there was a decrease in pH and an increase in the accompanying microbiota that interfered with the microbial growth curve. It was also observed that pasteurized milk subjected to 8 °C provided better conditions for the multiplication of bacteria. Therefore, it was concluded that care throughout the production chain, storage, and commercialization of milk must be adopted to guarantee the microbiological safety of this food.

Abstract The Equine Strangles, caused by Streptococcus equi subs. equi, is a contagious disease, causing high rates of morbidity been responsible for important economic losses. The M protein synthesized by S. equi plays an important role in the pathogenesis and is a promising candidate for a vaccine antigen. The innate immune system is responsible for the first immune response against microorganisms, this response is mediated by receptors that detect PAMPs and their activation trigger crucial modulation of the adaptative immune response. This work describes the immune response of S. equi subs. equi. recombinant SeM protein, using Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) as an expression and delivery vaccine system. To characterize and to determine the vaccine efficacy, mice were vaccinated as followed: 1. Recombinant E. coli expressing rSeM protein; 2. The same recombinant E. coli, inactivated adsorbed in Alumen; 3. Purified rSeM protein adsorbed in Alumen; 4. Inactivated S. equi whole cells adsorbed in Alumen; 5. Control group. All vaccinated mice developed protective response against S. equi infection, however the groups that received the E. coli expressing rSeM presented significant higher IgG level than other vaccinated groups. The recombinant E. coli delivery vaccine system also induced a highest IgG response than inactivated S. equi or purified rSeM vaccines in horses. This study evidence that the recombinant E. coli, live or inactivated, enhanced the humoral response, reaching significant higher antibodies levels than those obtained in the vaccination with the bacterin or purified antigen, showing the feasibility of producing low-cost vaccines against strangles.

The objective of the present case report was to describe the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of the upper anterior incisors of a patient with bruxism. A 23-year-old male patient, with bruxism, sought treatment for his upper anterior teeth due to diastemas and reduced lengths of the upper central incisors. The gingivoplasty and osteotomy were performed in the region of the upper central incisors to improve the positions of the gingival contours and increase the length of these teeth. After 90 days, teeth whitening was performed. After 1 month the composite resin veneers were made in the upper central incisors. During treatment, the needs and perspectives of the patient were considered to achieve clinical success. The treatments were finalized, and the final result was satisfactory. Therefore, an integrated treatment plan proved to be extremely important, especially when the patient is adequately informed of the available treatment options and collaborates with the treatment.

O objetivo do presente relato de caso clínico foi descrever a reabilitação estética e funcional dos incisivos anteriores superiores de um paciente com bruxismo. Paciente do gênero masculino, 23 anos de idade, bruxoma, procurou tratamento para os dentes anteriores superiores devido aos diastemas dentários e também por causa dos comprimentos reduzidos dos incisivos centrais superiores. Para isso, foi realizada a gengivoplastia e osteotomia na região dos incisivos centrais superiores com o objetivo de melhorar as posições dos contornos gengivais e aumentar o comprimento desses dentes. Após 90 dias, o clareamento dentário foi realizado. Depois de 1 mês as facetas de resina composta foram confeccionadas nos incisivos centrais superiores. Durante o tratamento as necessidades e perspectivas do paciente foram levadas em consideração para alcançar o sucesso clínico. Após a conclusão dos procedimentos, o resultado final foi satisfatório. Portanto, um plano de tratamento integrado se mostrou de extrema valia, principalmente quando o paciente é devidamente esclarecido das opções disponíveis de tratamento e colabora com o mesmo.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da PCR multiplex na detecção da adulteração por adição e/ou substituição de carne bubalina em carne moída bovina, comercialmente disponível. A fim de determinar o limite de detecção da técnica, carnes moídas bovinas fraudadas intencionalmente foram fabricadas em triplicata e, adicionalmente, concentrações conhecidas de DNA das espécies Bostaurus e Bubalusbubalis foram diluídos. Ao mesmo tempo, 91 amostras de carne moída comercializadas como sendo de origem bovina foram coletadas em diferentes comércios na região Norte do Brasil e a PCR multiplex proposta foi realizada. Os resultados demonstraram que o DNA bubalino foi detectado em 17,5% das amostras de carne moída coletadas. Concluiu-se que a PCR multiplex é uma técnica eficaz, capaz de detectar a incorporação de carne moída bubalina em percentagens que variaram de 10 a 100%, e a incorporação de carne bovina em percentagens que variaram de 0,1 a 100% em amostras de carne moída.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy ofmultiplex PCR in detecting the adulterationof commercially available ground beefvia addition and/orsubstitution ofground buffalo meat. Experimentally adulterated ground beefsamples were prepared in triplicate, and dilutions of DNA from Bos taurus and Bubalusbubalis were prepared to determine the detection limit of the method. Concurrently, 91 ground meatsamples sold as “ground beef” were collected from differentstores in northern Brazil andanalyzed bymultiplex PCR. Buffalo DNA was detected in 17.5% of the collected ground meat samples.Our results showed that multiplex PCR is an efficient method for detectingthe incorporation of groundbuffalo meatatpercentages ranging from 10 to 100% and the incorporation of beef at percentages ranging from0.1 to 100% intoground meat samples.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify different market segments for buffalo meat with target groups defined in the city of Belém, Pará, Brazil. Paired samples of beef and buffalo meat were given to 447 volunteers, and a sensory analysis of the products was conducted. After the tasting, a questionnaire was administered to obtain demographic (age, educational level, marital status) and economic (household income) data as well as information on the habits of respondents and preferences regarding buffalo meat. The factors were estimated using the principal components method and the factors with characteristic roots greater than one were extracted. To check the suitability of the factorial model, Bartlett’s sphericity test and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test were used. A factor analysis was performed, identifying five factors with common variability dimensions. The study has helped identify four distinct market segments which, combined with a targeted marketing strategy, can be used to leverage the productive chain: I - Young and interested, II - Mixed and indifferent, III - Graduates and successful, and IV - Healthy women. All had positive responses to buffalo meat; clusters I and III stood out with regard to several indicators, especially those related to the preference for buffalo meat and the predisposition to purchase and include it in meals. The sensory analysis indicated that consumers showed a greater acceptance of buffalo meat based on the characteristics of flavour, colour, succulence and tenderness. The study helps to identify market segments with distinct features that, combined with a targeted marketing strategy, can be used to leverage the supply chain.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito da adição de farelo de dendê (BP) como aditivo na silagem de capim-elefante. A composição química e fermentação foram analisadas em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com seis tratamentos, sendo um sem BP (C) e seis repetições, em que as médias dos resultados dos dias de fechamento e abertura foram analisadas por análise de regressão. As amostras foram coletadas no momento da ensilagem e após 190 dias de armazenamento para avaliação da matéria seca, proteína bruta, carboidratos (total, não fibrosos, solúvel em água, celulose e hemicelulose), cinzas, lignina e extrato etéreo. Na fase aeróbia, foram coletadas amostras para pH, nitrogênio amoniacal, fungos e leveduras. O capim-elefante do experimento apresentou valores de 13,9% de MS e 8,25% de PB, enquanto a BP tem 77,2% de MS e 16,9% de PB. A inclusão de BP inibiu o crescimento de fungos e leveduras. O aumento do teor de BP diminuiu a concentração de NH3-N. Maiores concentrações de BP tornaram as silagens mais estáveis, tendo sua quebra em 72 horas, enquanto que a estabilidade de C foi de 19 horas. As silagens com concentrações superiores a 15% BP não apresentaram variações significativas no pH, na fase aeróbica. A inclusão de farelo de palma, em concentrações de 10% a 15% pode ser usado em silagem de elefante, inibindo fermentação indesejável e tornando-as mais estáveis. Concentrações acima deste valor podem afetar o valor nutritivo da silagem pelo alto teor de lignina do aditivo.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding palm kernel meal (BP) as an additive in elephant grass silage. The chemical qualitative and fermentation were analysed in a completely randomized design with six treatments, one with no BP (C) and six replications, where the averages of the results of days of closing and opening were analysed by regression analysis. We collected samples at the time of ensiling and after 190 days of storage for evaluation of dry matter, crude protein, carbohydrates (total, non-fibrous, water-soluble, cellulose and hemicellulose), ash, lignin and ether extract. In aerobic phase, we collected samples for pH, ammoniacal nitrogen, fungi and yeasts. The elephant grass of this experiment showed values of 13.9% DM and 8.25% CP while the BP has 77.2% DM and 16.9% CP. The inclusion of BP had inhibited the growth of fungi and yeasts. The increase in the content of BP decreased the concentration of NH3-N. Higher concentrations of BP in silage were more stable, and the stability breaks in 72 hours, while the stability of C was 19 hours. Concentrations above 15% BP had no significant variations in pH in the aerobic phase. The inclusion of palm kernel meal at concentrations 10% to 15% can be used in silage of elephant grass, inhibiting undesired fermentation and making them more stable. Concentrations above this value may affect the nutritive value of silage by high lignin content of the additive.

A adenite equina, também conhecida como garrotilho, é uma enfermidade bacteriana contagiosa, causada por Streptococcus equi, subsp. equi, bactéria β hemolítica do grupo C de Lancefield, que afeta o trato respiratório anterior de equinos de todas as idades, com maior prevalência entre um e cinco anos de idade. Caracteriza-se por produzir secreção mucopurulenta das vias aéreas anteriores e linfadenite dos gânglios retrofaríngeos e submandibulares com formação de abscessos. Fatores de virulência de S. equi, subsp. equi, incluem cápsula de ácido hialurônico, hialuronidase, estreptolisina O, estreptoquinase, receptores para Fc de IgG, peptidoglicano e proteína M. Dentre esses fatores, a proteína M tem especial importância por ser de membrana com propriedades antifagocitárias e de aderência. A doença tem baixa letalidade e alta morbidade e seus prejuízos econômicos devem-se à perda de performance e custo do tratamento. O diagnóstico clínico e o tratamento não apresentam dificuldades, mas a profilaxia é prejudicada pela baixa eficiência das vacinas disponíveis, com índices de proteção de 50%. O garrotilho pode ocorrer em todas as épocas do ano, mas o frio e a umidade facilitam a sobrevivência do agente e sua disseminação, portanto animais que vivem nos estados mais frios e úmidos do país são mais vulneráveis à infecção. Novas vacinas utilizando antígenos purificados ou de subunidades estão sendo desenvolvidas com a finalidade de incrementar sua potência e evitar efeitos indesejáveis. A comprovação de diferenças de antigenicidade, entre estirpes, alerta sobre a importância da seleção apropriada das cepas vacinais.

Strangles is a contagious disease of the respiratory tract of horses produced by Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, a Lancefield's group C β haemolytic bacterium. It produces a mucopurulent secretion of the anterior airways, as well as lymphadenitis and abscesses. The bacteria synthesizes several pathogenicity factors such a hyaluronic acid capsule, hyaluronidase, streptolisin O, streptokinase, IgG Fc receptors, peptidoglican and protein M. Among these factors, protein M deserves special importance due to its antifagocitic and adherence properties. The disease has high morbidity and low lethality, and produces economic losses due to low performance and treatment. Clinical diagnosis and treatment are done easily, but prophylaxis is hampered by the low potency of vaccines, that protect around 50 % of vaccinated animals. Strangles may occur during all the year, but cold and humid weather favors the survival of streptococci, making animals that live in regions with those characteristics more prone to infection. New vaccines using purified or subunit antigens have been developed aiming to increase their potency and to avoid undesirable side effects. The demonstration that bacteria strains show differences in their antigenicity, called attention on the selection of appropriate strains to use as antigens.

Foram avaliados fatores de risco associados à ocorrência de doenças respiratórias em 349 potros Puro Sangue Inglês (PSI) monitorados do nascimento ao sexto mês de vida na região de Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brasil. A partir da avaliação clínica e laboratorial pôde-se registrar a frequência de 9,5% (33) casos respiratórios, com mortalidade de 0,57% (2). A ocorrência de casos foi mais elevada nos meses de verão, e potros com idade entre quatro e seis meses foram mais suscetíveis (P<0,001). O desenvolvimento de doenças foi influenciado (P<0,001) pelo sistema de criação e pelas práticas de manejo, os quais aumentaram o potencial de contaminação do ambiente. Na avaliação microbiológica, a maior frequência de isolados foi de Streptococcus equi (57%), seguido do Rhodococcus equi (17%), letal em 50% dos casos. Nenhum caso clínico foi associado ao vírus da influenza equina (EIV) e ao herpesvírus equino (EHV-1-4). Os resultados sugerem que fatores ligados ao manejo, na criação de equinos PSI, parecem contribuir decisivamente para a manifestação da doença respiratória e alertam para a morbidade causada pela adenite equina e a letalidade atribuída à rodococose.

Risk factors associated the occurrence of respiratory diseases they were evaluated between 349 Thoroughbred foals, monitored of the birth to the sixth month of life in the region of Bagé-RS-Brazil. From the laboratory and clinical evaluation, the frequency of 9.5% (33) of respiratory cases with mortality of 0.57% (2) was recorded. The occurrence of cases was higher in months of summer and foals with age between four and six months were more susceptible (P<0.001). The development of the diseases was influenced (P<0.001) by the breeding system of and management practices that increased the environmental contamination potential. In the evaluation microbiological, , the highest frequency of isolated was of Streptococcus equi (57%), followed by the Rhodococcus equi (17%), lethal in 50% of the cases. No clinic case was associated to the equine influenza virus (EIV) and to the equine herpesvirus (EHV-1-4). The results suggest that connected factors to the management in the breeding of thoroughbred equine are going to contribute decisively for the manifestation of the respiratory disease and alert for the morbidity caused by the equine adenitis and the lethality related to rodococosis.

A Adenite Eqüina é freqüente em animais vacinados com bacterinas comerciais no Rio Grande do Sul. Com o objetivo de determinar as relações antigênicas entre cepas isoladas de casos clínicos e duas vacinas amplamente utilizadas no Estado, foram determinados os índices de reatividade cruzada bilateral (IRC) entre elas. Também foi determinada a imunogenicidade em camundongos de vacinas preparadas com cepas de campo e de vacinas comerciais. Os títulos de anticorpos foram determinados por ELISA e expressos como soroconversão. Foram isoladas 13 cepas de Streptococcus equi subsp. equi de 35 casos clínicos de Adenite Eqüina em 10 diferentes rebanhos do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, das quais nove foram classificadas bioquimicamente como típicas e outras quatro como atípicas. As cepas de campo apresentaram elevada reatividade cruzada, sugerindo homogeneidade antigênica entre elas, mas não com as cepas vacinais. Uma vacina produzida com cepa atípica induziu soroconversão de 9.4, enquanto duas vacinas produzidas com cepas típicas foram pouco imunogênicas. As vacinas comerciais induziram soroconversões de 2.6 e 3.8, menores que quatro e cinco vacinas produzidas com cepas de campo, respectivamente.

Horse Strangles appears frequently in animals vaccinated with commercial bacterins in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Aiming to know the antigenic relationships of strains recovered from sick animals among them and with two vaccines profusely used in the state, bilateral cross reactivity indices (CRI) were estimated. In addition, the immunogenicity of vaccines prepared with field isolates and commercial vaccines was tested in mice. Antibody titers were measured by ELISA and expressed as seroconversions. Thirteen strains of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi, nine classified biochemically as typical and other four as atypical strains, were recovered from 35 sick horses belonging to 10 herds of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The strains recovered from sick horses showed very close CRI, suggesting antigenic homogeneity among them, but not with the vaccinal strains. A vaccine produced with an atypical strain induced the highest seroconversion, 9.4, while two produced with typical strains were poorly-immunogenic. The commercial vaccines were less immunogenic than five and four vaccines produced with field strains, inducing seroconversions of 2.6 and 3.8, respectively.
