Abstract Baldwin’s rules are a before and after in science, especially in organic chemistry. In this work, a bibliographic review of research and advances that was carried out. This topic which may be interest to students that studying advanced organic chemistry and students who are doing research in cyclic systems, as well as professors who are interested in this area. Firstly, about what Baldwin’s rules are and what they used for, how they have evolved, what patterns have been discovered that do not work, or which ones continue to work, as well as new concepts and methodologies or a complement of these to have a successful ring closure in the best conditions. It also talks about the stereoelectronic and geometric characteristics of Baldwin structures, what is most favorable, about applications and use of Baldwin’s rules for important syntheses, and new rules established according to the behavior of molecules with transition metals.

Resumen Las reglas de Baldwin constituyen un antes y un después en la ciencia, en especial en la química orgánica. En este trabajo se llevó a cabo una revisión bibliográfica de investigaciones y avances, que pueden ser de gran interés a estudiantes que cursan química orgánica avanzada, alumnos que están haciendo investigación en sistemas cíclicos, así como profesores que su interés sea en esta área. Primeramente, hay que conocer qué son las reglas de Baldwin y su uso para la predicción de productos de reacciones químicas, su evolución y algunas correcciones de cómo han evolucionado, qué patrones han descubierto que no funcionan, o cuáles siguen funcionando, así como conceptos y metodologías nuevas para entender las reacciones de ciclación y la obtención de anillos de distintos tamaños y miembros, de esta forma poder predecir y mejorar condiciones de reacción. Se habla también sobre las características estereoelectrónicas y geométricas de las estructuras que se deben cumplir según las reglas de Baldwin, para predecir qué reacciones se pueden y cuáles no se pueden llevar a cabo, sobre aplicaciones y uso de las reglas de Baldwin para síntesis importantes, y nuevas reglas establecidas según el comportamiento de las moléculas con metales de transición.

Abstract: Small-scale tilapia production contributes to sustainable rural development; however, it can be stagnated due to parasite diseases. This work aimed to determine the prevalence and intensity of infection of trichodinids and monogeneans on farmed tilapia in rural areas of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas, located in southwestern Mexico. A total of six trichodinid (Trichodina centrostrigeata, T compacta, T. heterodentata, T. magna, T. nigra y Trichodina sp.) and nine monogenean (Cichlidogyrus cirratus, C. dossoui, C. halli, C. mbirizei, C. sclerosus, C. thurstonae, C. tilapiae, Gyrodactylus cichlidarum y Scutogyrus longicornis) species were identified. The findings of C. mbirizei y C. cirratus represent new geographic records for Mexico. Trichodinid and monogenean infections occurred, respectively, at 73 and 93% of farms, distributed in coastal areas and mountain valleys. The prevalence of trichodinids was high (60-100%) in 30% of farms, whereas the median intensity was <10 trichodinids per fish. The prevalence of monogeneans was high and median intensities ranged between 1 and 30 at most farms. These results suggest that parasites can potentially occur everywhere; therefore, better management practices should be implemented to prevent parasite outbreaks.

Resumen: Las granjas pequeñas de tilapia contribuyen al desarrollo rural sostenible; pero los parásitos pueden afectar su productividad. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la prevalencia e intensidad de tricodínidos y monogeneos en granjas de tilapia de Guerrero, Oaxaca y Chiapas. Se identificaron seis especies de tricodínidos: Trichodina centrostrigeata, T. compacta, T. heterodentata, T. magna, T nigra y Trichodina sp.; y nueve de monogeneos: Cichlidogyrus cirratus, C. dossoui, C. halli, C. mbirizei, C. sclerosus, C. thurstonae,C. tilapiae, Gyrodacty lus cichlidarum y Scutogyrus longicornis. Siendo los registros de C. mbirizei y C. cirratus nuevos para México. Los tricodínidos y monogeneos se presentaron, respectivamente, en 73 y 93% de las granjas muestreadas, tanto en regiones montañosas, valles y costas. La prevalencia de tricodínidos fue alta (60-100%) en 30% de las granjas, pero la intensidad mediana fue menor a 10 parásitos por pez. Mientras que la prevalencia de monogeneos fue alta en la mayoría de las granjas, pero la intensidad mediana fue baja (1 a 30). Estos resultados sugieren que los parásitos tienen el potencial de distribuirse en cualquier granja, por lo que las prácticas de manejo deben ser mejoradas y reducir así posibles brotes parasitarios que afecten la salud de los peces.

Abstract This study investigated the renal function of soccer players after an entire game-season. Thirty-five athletes recruited to play for the Macae Futebol Clube were invited for this study, of which 18 athletes completed the entire game season. Blood and 24-hour urine were collected at the beginning (Pre-Season) and the end of the game season (Post-Season). Kidney functions were assessed by calculating the urinary excretion, clearance, and fractional excretion of the selected solutes. Plasma creatinine, sodium, total protein, and osmolality were lower in the Post-Season . In contrast, plasma urea was higher in the Post-Season period. Urinary excretion of urea was reduced while albumin excretion was higher in comparison to Pre-Season. The clearances of creatinine, total proteins, and albumin were higher in the Post-Season period. In accordance, the fractional excretion of albumin increased. On the other hand, the clearance and fractional excretion of urea was lower in the Post-Season period. These results show that soccer-associated exercise throughout the entire game-season induces kidney functions adaptations that may prevent dehydration in these athletes through increased urea reabsorption to conserve water. In addition, this data corroborates to increased glomerular permeability to plasma proteins, such as albumin, that soccer players may experience.

Resumen Una gestión sostenible de los bosques requiere conocer aspectos ecológicos y el diseño de pautas silvícolas ajustadas a ellos. El objetivo del trabajo fue caracterizar la composición arbórea, la diversidad, la estructura horizontal y vertical de dos tipos de forestales del noroeste de la provincia del Chaco, Argentina, los cuales fueron identificados como Bosque Alto Abierto y Bosque Bajo Abierto. Los datos usados provienen de un inventario forestal de 3.665 ha boscosas efectuado en un predio de 4.978 ha. En el Bosque Alto Abierto, fueron halladas 14 especies y ocho familias botánicas; en el Bosque Bajo Abierto se encontraron ocho especies y seis familias. El coeficiente de mezcla, arrojó valores de 1:19 y 1:26 respectivamente. Con base en el índice de valor de importancia y los valores de cobertura, las especies más importantes fueron Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, Ziziphus mistol y Schinopsis lorentzii. Ambos tipos forestales presentaron diferencias notables tanto en la continuidad de los estratos de altura como en la presencia de individuos en las clases diamétricas mayores.

Abstract A sustainable forest management requires knowing ecological aspects and the design of silvicultural guidelines adjusted to them. The objective of the work was to characterize the tree composition, diversity, horizontal and vertical structure of two types of forest in the northwest of the province of Chaco, Argentina identified as High Open Forest and Low Open Forest. The data collected come from a forest inventory of 3,665 ha of woodlands covering 4,978 ha. In the High Open Forest, 14 species and 8 botanical families were found while in the Low Open Forest 8 species and 6 families. The mixing coefficient reached values of 1:19 and 1:26 respectively. On the basis of the importance value index together with the cover values, the most important species were Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco, Ziziphus mistol and Schinopsis lorentzii. Both forest types showed notable differences concerning the continuity of the height strata as well as in the presence of individuals in the largest diameter classes.

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate tree-vigor and the natural regeneration of the sacred fir in the eastern part of the State of Mexico (México) considering topographic and forest variables. Methodology: Systematic sampling was applied with sites every 100 m a. s. l. between 2900 and 3600 m a. s. l. Through the SAS program the following were conducted: statistical tests of normality, frequency tables and analysis of variance tests to study the relationship between altitude and the vigor and regeneration of Abies religiosa (Kunth) Schltdl. et Cham. Results: There is a relationship between altitude and vigor and tree-density. Regeneration is null in low altitudes and it increases with altitude peaking at 3 400 m a. s. l., without great reduction at higher levels. Tree-density in stratum A (DBH ≥12.5 cm) and B (DBH <12.5 cm and >1 m height) increases with altitude; higher tree-densities were recorded at 3 400 m a. s. l. Limitations: Research is required on other factors involved in the distribution of the studied species. Findings: Regeneration is more successful in mid and high areas, and tree vigor tends to be better there also. It is evidenced that the sacred fir migrates to higher areas because of global warming.

Resumen Objetivo: evaluar el vigor del arbolado y la regeneración natural de oyamel al oriente del Estado de México, considerando variables topográficas y forestales. Método: se usó muestreo sistemático, con sitios cada 100 m s. n. m. entre los 2900 y 3600 m s. n. m. Con el programa SAS se hicieron pruebas de normalidad, tablas de frecuencia y análisis de varianza para analizar la relación entre altitud, vigor y regeneración de Abies religiosa (Kunth) Schltdl. et Cham. Resultados: hay relación entre la altitud, el vigor y la densidad arbórea. La regeneración es nula en las cotas más bajas e incrementa con la altitud hasta los 3 400 m s. n. m. y no muestra gran reducción más arriba. La densidad de los estratos A (DAP ≥12.5 cm) y B (DAP <12.5 cm y >1 m de altura) incrementa conforme a la altitud; las densidades más altas se registran en la cota 3 400 m s. n. m. Limitaciones: se requiere investigación de otros factores que intervienen en la distribución de la especie. Principales hallazgos: la regeneración tiene más éxito en zonas medias y altas, y la condición del arbolado tiende a ser mejor ahí también. Se evidencia que el oyamel migra a zonas más elevadas, debido al cambio climático global.

ABSTRACT Background: Regional information regarding the characteristics of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 is needed for a better understanding of the pandemic. Objective: The objective of the study to describe the clinical features of COVID-19 patients diagnosed in a tertiary-care center in Mexico City and to assess differences according to the treatment setting (ambulatory vs. hospital) and to the need of intensive care (IC). Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort, including consecutive patients with COVID-19 from February 26, 2020 to April 11, 2020. Results: We identified 309 patients (140 inpatients and 169 outpatients). The median age was 43 years (interquartile range, 33-54), 59.2% men, and 18.6% healthcare workers (12.3% from our center). The median body mass index (BMI) was 29.00 kg/m2 and 39.6% had obesity. Compared to outpatients, inpatients were older, had comorbidities, cough, and dyspnea more frequently. Twenty-nine (20.7%) inpatients required treatment in the IC unit (ICU). History of diabetes (type 1 or 2) and abdominal pain were more common in ICU patients compared to non-ICU patients. ICU patients had higher BMIs, higher respiratory rates, and lower room-air capillary oxygen saturations. ICU patients showed a more severe inflammatory response as assessed by white blood cell count, neutrophil and platelet count, C-reactive protein, ferritin, procalcitonin, and albumin levels. By the end of the study period, 65 inpatients had been discharged because of improvement, 70 continued hospitalized, and five had died. Conclusions: Patients with comorbidities, either middle-age obese or elderly complaining of fever, cough, or dyspnea, were more likely to be admitted. At admission, patients with diabetes, high BMI, and clinical or laboratory findings consistent with a severe inflammatory state were more likely to require IC.

RESUMEN Muestras de plancton obtenidas de la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, un extenso sistema estuarino en el norte de Colombia, produjeron especímenes machos y hembras de una especie no descrita del género Halicyclops. Los copépodos de la familia Cyclopidae son dominantes en los hábitats de agua dulce y transicionales. Los miembros de la subfamilia Halicyclopinae son predominantemente de hábitats salobres, con algunas especies de agua dulce. La nueva especie aquí descrita es asignable al grupo de especies denominado "F" de Halicyclops (sensu Pesce, 2018) con una fórmula de espinas exopodales (P1-4) = 2333. Actualmente, este grupo contiene cinco especies y una subespecie. Halicyclops gutierrezi sp. n. puede distinguirse de sus congéneres conocidos por la ausencia de un verdadero opérculo anal, la longitud relativa de las setas de la P5 de la hembra y del macho, la longitud relativa de las setas internas de P4EXP3 y por detalles de la anténula del macho. Esta es la quinta especie de Halicyclops registrada en Colombia y la primera del grupo "F" de Halicyclops descrita en la cuenca del Caribe. Con la adición de H. gutierrezi sp. n., aumentó a 20 el número de especies del género que se conocen en la región Neotropical. Se proporciona una clave para la identificación de las especies del género registradas en Colombia.

ABSTRACT Plankton samples obtained from the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, an extensive estuarine system in northern Colombia, yielded adult male and female specimens of an undescribed halicyclopine cyclopid copepod of the genus Halicyclops. Cyclopid copepods are frequently found in freshwater and transitional habitats. Members of the subfamily Halicyclopinae are chiefly brackish water forms with a few freshwater species. The new species described herein is assignable to the group of species "F" of Halicyclops (sensu Pesce, 2018) with a 2333 exopodal spine formula. Currently, this group contains five species and one subspecies. Halicyclopsgutierrezi sp. n. can be distinguished from its known congeners by the absence of an anal operculum, the relative length of setae of the female and male P5, the relative length of the inner setae of P4EXP3, and details of the male antennule. This is the fifth species of Halicyclops recorded from Colombia and the first one of Halicyclops group "F" described from the Caribbean region. With the addition of H. gutierrezi sp. n., the number of species of the genus known from the Neotropics increased to 20. A key to the species of the genus recorded in Colombia is also provided.

Abstract Background: The Mexican Society of Pediatric Endocrinology presents recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of precocious puberty (PP), a condition defined as the development of sexual characteristics due to an increase in pituitary gonadotropin secretion before 8 or 9 years of age in girls and boys, respectively. Methods: Three systematic reviews were conducted: controlled clinical trials on interventions for PP treatment, diagnostic tests, and observational studies on the long-term effects of PP. The quality evaluation and data extraction from the studies were conducted by two independent reviewers. The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network and the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine systems were used for grading the quality of evidence for recommendations on intervention and diagnosis, respectively. Recommendations were submitted to a consensus by a Delphi method and were validated by another 143 certified pediatric endocrinologists through an online questionnaire. Results: The group generated 12 recommendations on the diagnosis of PP, seven on the diagnosis of secondary causes of PP, eight on interventions for inhibition of puberty, five on other interventions for PP treatment, and 14 for the monitoring and follow-up of these patients. The online questionnaires submitted to certified pediatric endocrinologists showed more than 90% of approval for each one of the recommendations. Conclusions: Although a high degree of consensus for the recommendations for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of PP among pediatric endocrinologists was achieved, most of these recommendations showed a low level of evidence.

Resumen Introducción: La Sociedad Mexicana de Endocrinología Pediátrica presenta recomendaciones para el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de la pubertad precoz (PP), condición definida como el desarrollo de caracteres sexuales por incremento en la secreción hipofisiaria de gonadotropinas antes de los 8 años en las niñas y de los 9 años en los niños. Métodos: Se realizaron tres revisiones sistemáticas de ensayos clínicos controlados sobre intervenciones para el tratamiento de la PP, pruebas diagnósticas y estudios observacionales sobre efectos a largo plazo de la PP. La evaluación de la calidad de los estudios y la extracción de datos se realizó por pares. La evidencia se graduó con el sistema de la Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) y del Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM) para las recomendaciones sobre la intervención y el diagnóstico, respectivamente. Las recomendaciones generadas se sometieron a un consenso por el método Delphi y fueron validadas por otros 143 endocrinólogos pediatras certificados mediante un cuestionario en línea. Resultados: Mediante consenso se generaron 12 recomendaciones para el diagnóstico de PP, siete sobre diagnóstico de causas secundarias de PP, ocho sobre intervenciones para inhibición de la pubertad, cinco sobre otras intervenciones en PP y 14 para la monitorización del tratamiento y el seguimiento de estos pacientes. Se obtuvo más del 90% de aprobación para cada una de las recomendaciones por el grupo de endocrinólogos certificados que respondieron el cuestionario en línea. Conclusiones: Si bien se logró un alto grado de consenso para las recomendaciones para el diagnóstico, el tratamiento y la monitorización de la PP entre los endocrinólogos pediatras, el nivel de evidencia para la mayoría de estas recomendaciones resultó bajo.

Abstract Three systematic reviews were conducted to formulate the recommendations on diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with precocious puberty: interventions for the treatment of precocious puberty that included the outcomes of final or near-final height, mental health, metabolic health, health bone, or blockade success; comparative observational studies evaluating long-term outcomes in subjects with a history of precocious puberty; and diagnostic test accuracy studies for puberty.

Resumen Se realizaron tres revisiones sistemáticas para la formulación de las recomendaciones sobre diagnóstico, tratamiento y seguimiento de pacientes con pubertad precoz: intervenciones para el tratamiento de la pubertad precoz que incluyeran los desenlaces de talla final o casi final, salud mental, salud metabólica, salud ósea o éxito en el bloqueo; estudios observacionales comparativos que evaluaran desenlaces a largo plazo en sujetos con antecedentes de pubertad precoz; y por último, estudios de exactitud de prueba diagnóstica para pubertad.
