Abstract Methane emission from beef and dairy cattle combined contributes around 4.5-5.0% of total anthropogenic global methane. In addition to enteric methane (CH4) produced by the rumen, cattle production also contributes carbon dioxide (CO2) (feed), nitrous oxide (N2O) (feed production, manure) and other CH4 (manure) to the total greenhouse gas (GHG) budget of beef and dairy production systems. The relative contribution in standard dairy systems is typically enteric CH4 58%, feed 29% and manure 10%. Herds with low production efficiency can have an enteric CH4 contribution up to 90%. Digestibility of feed can impact CH4 emission intensity. Low fertility herds also have a greater enteric CH4 contribution. Animals with good feed conversion efficiency have a lower emission intensity of CH4/kg of meat or milk. Feed efficient heifers tend to be lean and have delayed puberty. Fertility is a major driver of profit in both beef and dairy cattle, and it is highly important to apply multi-trait selection when shifting herds towards improved efficiency and reduced CH4. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been identified for feed efficiency in cattle and are used in genomic selection. SNPs can be utilized in artificial insemination and embryo transfer to increase the proportion of cattle that have the attributes of efficiency, fertility and reduced enteric CH4. Prepubertal heifers genomically selected for favourable traits can have oocytes recovered to produce IVF embryos. Reproductive technology is predicted to be increasingly adopted to reduce generation interval and accelerate the rate of genetic gain for efficiency, fertility and low CH4 in cattle. The relatively high contribution of cattle to anthropogenic global methane has focussed attention on strategies to reduce enteric CH4 without compromising efficiency and fertility. Assisted reproductive technology has an important role in achieving the goal of multiplying and distributing cattle that have good efficiency, fertility and low CH4.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Parampheres Roewer, 1913 is a relatively common genus of South American harvestmen. This genus is easily diagnosed by the remarkable yellow patches on the prosoma. Nonetheless, species determination within this group is challenging due the convoluted taxonomic history of the group and lack of a recent revision. In this study we revise Parampheres and describe a new species, Parampheres tenebris sp. nov., from Parque Nacional da Serra Geral, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from the other species of the genus by having dorsal scutum dark, and apophysis of coxa IV of male elongated. Furthermore, we propose the following new synonymies: Callampheres boliviensis Roewer, 1913, Pertyana ronae Mello-Leitão, 1927 and Parampheres tibialis Roewer, 1917 with Parampheres pectinatus Roewer, 1913. Parampheres now includes four species distributed from southern Brazil to adjacent areas in Argentina and Uruguay. In addition, we present a phylogenetic hypothesis based on morphological characters that supports the transfer of Parampheres from Gonyleptinae to Caelopyginae.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of joint fusion and bone formation in dogs undergoing atlantoaxial arthrodesis after removal of articular cartilage associated or not to implant homogenous or autogenous cancellous bone. Twelve dogs, weighing between 8 and 12kg were randomly divided into three groups. Group I (GI) performed only the removal of joint cartilage and joint immobilization with acrylic resin and pins. Group II (GII): after removel of joint cartilage and articular immobilization was performed modeling and placement of homogenous cancellous bone at the given location. The volume of homograft placed in the joint was measured using a precision balance and all animals received the same amount. Group III (GIII): this was the same procedure as GI, however, was used autogenous cancellous bone graft at the given location. Radiographic examinations were performed on all animals at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. At 90 days of PO was carried out euthanasia of animals for testing of manual palpation and CT evaluation and histological. Samples were kept in solution in 10% buffered formaldehyde for fixation for a minimum of 72 hours and after, decalcified in formic acid and sodium citrate for subsequent processing and included in paraffin. Sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for light microscopy evaluation. Statistical analysis of the association between the degree of joint fusion assessed by manual palpation, the digitized radiographic images and CT scans and treatment groups, we applied the Chi-square test of independence. The test results were evaluated by the exact significance and considered statistically significant at 5% significance (P<0.05). By manual palpation test and by the CT images can be seen that there was no statistically significant difference between groups at 90 days postoperatively. Radiographic analysis of the atlantoaxial joint showed that the degree of fusion was similar among treatments, no statistical difference at 30, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. Regarding the histopathological study of atlantoaxial joint of dogs after 90 days postoperatively was found that bone formation in group I had 25% of each intensity (absent, mild, moderate, severe) in group II, 75% lighter and 25% sharp and in group III, 25% moderate and 75% severe. It can be concluded that the use of graft homogenous preserved in 98% glycerin in dogs undergoing atlantoaxial fusion method is a viable alternative for treatment of atlantoaxial instability. There is no difference in the degree of joint fusion and bone formation when the technique of atlantoaxial arthrodesis in dogs is associated with autogenous cancellous bone graft or implant homogenous. The removal of articular cartilage alone is an effective and shows similar results to the use of autograft or homogenous implant.

The present study evaluated the interchangeability of prosthetic components for external hexagon implants by measuring the precision of the implant/abutment (I/A) interface with scanning electron microscopy. Ten implants for each of three brands (SIN, Conexão, Neodent) were tested with their respective abutments (milled CoCr collar rotational and non-rotational) and another of an alternative manufacturer (Microplant) in randomly arranged I/A combinations. The degree of interchangeability between the various brands of components was defined using the original abutment interface gap with its respective implant as the benchmark dimension. Accordingly, when the result for a given component placed on an implant was equal to or smaller then that gap measured when the original component of the same brand as the implant was positioned, interchangeability was considered valid. Data were compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test at 5% significance level. Some degree of misfit was observed in all specimens. Generally, the non-rotational component was more accurate than its rotational counterpart. The latter samples ranged from 0.6-16.9 µm, with a 4.6 µm median; and the former from 0.3-12.9 µm, with a 3.4 µm median. Specimens with the abutment and fixture from Conexão had larger microgap than the original set for SIN and Neodent (p<0.05). Even though the latter systems had similar results with their respective components, their interchanged abutments did not reproduce the original accuracy. The results suggest that the alternative brand abutment would have compatibility with all systems while the other brands were not completely interchangeable.

This work presents the effects of an anatoxin-a(s)-containing extract on a cockroach semi-isolated heart preparation and the results supporting the extract’s biological activity on acetylcholinesterase (purified from ell). The presence of the toxin in cyanobacterial strains Anabaena spiroides (ITEP-024, ITEP-025 and ITEP-026) isolated from the Tapacurá reservoir in Pernambuco, Brazil, was confirmed by means of liquid chromatography coupled to an ion-trap mass spectrometer. The anticholinesterase activity was assessed biochemically by the Ellman test and was confirmed by measuring the cockroach’s heart rate. The concentration of the extract containing the tested anatoxin-a(s) (antx-a(s)) (10, 16 and 100 μg.μL-1) inhibited the eel acetylcholinesterase (AChE) by more than 90%. The cockroach cardiac frequency increased by a maximum of about 20% within 29 min after the addition of 2.5x10³ μg of extract containing antxa (s).g-1 bw (n=9, p<0.05). Our results strongly indicate that antx-a(s) is capable of exerting biological effects on cockroach, indicating that more research might be conducted to determine its role in the environment, especially on insects.

Objective: To evalúate the long-term results of percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty (PMV), and analyze the factors associated with restenosis and late events. Methods and results: Of 252 PMV performed between December 1987 and December 2006, 245 patients with a mínimum of 6 months follow-up and echocardiogra-phic evaluation before and after the procedure, were se-lected for long-term follow-up (97%). The mean age was 46.3 ± 11.37 years oíd, 83.6% women. The mean follow-up was 35.25 ± 28.84 months, range 6-132. Cardiovascular death, and mitral valve replacement or se-cond PMV, were considered as markers of worst outco-me. The mitral valve área increased from 1.0±0.17cm2 to 1.71 ± 0.31 cm2 (p <0.0001) after the first procedure. During follow up, 53 patients (21.6%) developed restenosis, which was predicted by a Wilkins score > 8 (p = 0.03). Five (2.04%) patients died. Twenty-two (8.9 %) required mitral valve replacement and 11(4.5 %) a second PMV. We found that no clinical or echocardio-graphic variables were able to predict these events. Conclusions: PMV had an acceptable rate of compli-cations attributable to the procedure. The echocardio-graphic characteristics of the mitral valve correlated with restenosis. The incidence of late events is low.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of diets with different levels of fresh orange pulp in substitution to sorghum silage on eating behavior (feeding, rumination and idle)in sheep. Sixteen wethers, crossbred breeds averaging 28.27 kg BW (±2.41) were allotted to a randomized blocks design, with four treatments (0, 25, 50, and 75%), two blocks and two replicates per block. Animals were evaluated by observation during two consecutive days. In the first day, the average number of chewing per ruminal bolus and the average time spending in the chewing per ruminal bolus were evaluated during three periods (8 to 10 hours, 14 to 16 hours and 18 to 20 hours). In the second day, the behaviour was visually determined during 24 hours with five minutes intervals to determine the times spent in idle, feeding, rumination. There was not difference for the time spent with feeding in minutes day and in minutes/kg of DM and NDF. The time spent in rumination and idle in minutes day showed a quadratic effect in function of increased levels of fresh citrus pulp in the diets. The time spent in rumination, in minutes for kg MS, presented decreased linear effect and the time with rumination in minutes/kg NDF there was not difference. No differences on daily feeding number, total chewing time, number of rumination bolus, number of rumination chews per bolus and rumination chews time per bolus were observed. The number of rumination periods and number of rumination chews showed decreasing linear effect.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of gallium nitrate solution, an anti-resorption substance, when applied for root surface treatment in rat teeth submitted to delayed replantation, in order to inhibit the root resorption process and enhance repair. For such purpose, 20 maxillary right central incisors of rats were randomly assigned to 2 groups (n=10). In group I, root surface was treated with 10-4M gallium nitrate solution for 20 min, while in group II root surface was treated with 2% sodium fluoride for 20 min. All root canals were filled with a calcium hydroxide-based paste. At 15 and 60 days after replantation, the animals were killed and the specimens were processed in laboratory for light transmission microscopy. In both groups, there was mild occurrence of ankylosis and root resorption. The connective tissue formed at the periodontal ligament area was arranged parallel to the root in most specimens in both groups and presented signs of inflammation. In group I, there was periodontal pocket formation in all specimens at 60 days, revealing lack of repair. These findings contraindicate the use of gallium nitrate for root surface treatment of teeth submitted to late replantation.
