ABSTRACT Background: Multiple challenges are faced by industry and certification agencies when commercializing tropical species. Anatomical similarities of tropical hardwoods impair identification. Deep learning models can facilitate microscopic identification of wood by using sophisticated techniques such as deep convolutional networks (DCNN). Our objective was to microscopically identify 23 commercially available Brazilian wood species using a custom DCNN model. Results: Photographs from microscopic slides of each wood species were processed, and the final data set contained 2,448 images. We applied stratified k-fold cross-validation technique during training to increase model’s robustness and trustworthiness. Thus, the dataset was divided into approximately 80% training (1,958 images) and 20% validation (490 images) for each fold. A series of augmentations were performed only on training data to include variations in rotation, zoom, and perspective. Image augmentation was performed on-the-fly. The network consisted of convolutions, max pooling, global average pooling, and fully connected layers. We tested the performance of the DCNN against accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score on the validation set for each fold. Conclusion: The custom machine learned model accuracy was higher than 0.90. The model’s worst performance was identified in distinguishing between Toona ciliate and Khaya ivorensis, which was due more to wood variability than to a machine learning deficiency. Future studies should focus on integration, verification/monitoring, and updating of current models for end user manipulation, trust, ethics, and security.

Abstract The anatomy of wood and charcoal was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy in three radial positions of E. urophylla and E. Grandis in different diameter classes at six years. The carbonization process was given in the muffle with an average rate of 0.5 °C increment per minute, using initial temperature of 150 °C and maximum of 450 °C. It was observed that the pore diameter presented higher values in the samples obtained in the internal position. The diameter classes of the trees almost did not influence the characteristics of the fibers. In the external position (close to the shell) fibers with higher values of cell wall thickness and smaller values of lumen diameter and width were identified. The fiber lumen diameter was not affected by the wood carbonization process, whereas the cell wall thickness and fiber width were reduced.

RESUMO O crescimento da demanda mundial por madeira implica na busca de novas espécies de rápido crescimento com potencial silvicultural e, nesse cenário, as espécies nativas como o paricá. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira da espécie Schizolobium amazonicum (paricá). As árvores foram coletadas em plantios comerciais localizados no norte do Brasil, com idades de 5, 7, 9 e 11 anos. Das árvores de cada idade foram obtidas quatro toras no sentido longitudinal das árvores e, posteriormente, um pranchão diametral de cada tora para fabricação dos corpos de prova, os quais foram utilizados para avaliar algumas propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira. A densidade básica do paricá reduziu no sentido base-topo e não houve diferença entre as posições radiais, em média, a densidade básica dessa madeira caracterizou-se como baixa. A região próxima da casca apresentou menor contração longitudinal, e também, maior homogeneidade dessa propriedade ao longo do tronco, enquanto para a contração tangencial a menor variação foi encontrada na região próxima à medula. A contração da madeira de paricá foi caracterizada como baixa. A idade influenciou a maioria das propriedades mecânicas, tendo a tora da base os maiores valores de resistência mecânica.

ABSTRACT Growth in world demand for wood implies a search for new fast growing species with silvicultural potential, and in this scenario for native species such as Paricá . Thus, the objective of this study was determining the physical and mechanical wood properties of the Schizolobium amazonicum species (known as Paricá in Brazil). Trees were collected from commercial plantations located in the north of Brazil with ages of 5, 7, 9 and 11 years. Four logs from trees of each age in the longitudinal direction of the trees were obtained, and later a diametrical plank of each log was taken to manufacture the specimens which were used to evaluate some physical and mechanical properties of the wood. The basic density of Paricá was reduced in the basetop direction and no difference between the radial positions was observed, while the average basic density of this wood was characterized as low. The region close to the bark showed less longitudinal contraction and also greater homogeneity of this property along the trunk, while for tangential contraction the smallest variation was found in the region near the pith. Paricá wood contraction was characterized as low. Age influenced most of the mechanical properties, where logs from the base had the highest values of mechanical strength.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar os efeitos da idade das árvores e das posições medula-casca e base-topo nas características anatômicas e o efeito da idade nos componentes químicos da madeira de Schizolobium amazonicum (paricá). O material foi obtido de plantios comerciais nos estados do Maranhão e Pará, com idades de 5, 7, 9 e 11 anos. Das árvores de cada idade foram obtidas as três primeiras toras (de 2,7 m de comprimento cada). Para a caracterização química da madeira analisou-se apenas o efeito da idade. As dimensões das fibras aumentaram no sentido medula-casca, enquanto a espessura da parede reduziu e o comprimento das fibras aumentou juntamente com a idade. A largura das fibras e o diâmetro do lume aumentaram no sentido base-topo. A madeira de paricá apresentou baixo teor de extrativos e de hemiceluloses, e alto teor de celulose. As características anatômicas foram mais afetadas pelos fatores em estudo do que a composição química, evidenciando que os elementos químicos da madeira são mais estáveis com a idade em relação aos caracteres anatômicos.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the effects of tree age and of pith-bark and base-top positions on anatomical characteristics, and the effect of age on the chemical components of Schizolobium amazonicum (Paricá wood). The material was obtained from commercial plantations in the states of Maranhão and Pará with ages of 5, 7, 9 and 11 years. The first three logs (2.7 m length each) were obtained from the trees of each age. Only the effect of age was analyzed for the chemical characterization of the wood. The dimensions of the fibers increased along the pith-bark direction, while wall thickness decreased and the length of the fibers increased with aging. The width of the fibers and the lume diameter increased in the base-top direction. Paricá wood presented low extractive and hemicellulose content, and high cellulose content. The anatomical characteristics were more affected by the factors under study than the chemical composition, evidencing that the chemical elements of the wood are more stable with aging in relation to the anatomical characteristics.

RESUMO O objetivo foi avaliar o efeito dos extrativos solúveis em água quente e temperatura final de carbonização no rendimento gravimétrico e propriedades do carvão vegetal em resíduos de três espécies florestais nativas, provenientes da região amazônica. Foram utilizados resíduos de aparas das espécies de ipê, garapa e maçaranduba, provenientes do processamento de usinagem da marcenaria de uma empresa do estado do Pará. As carbonizações foram realizadas em forno elétrico adaptado utilizando uma taxa de aquecimento de 1,67°C min-1 e temperaturas finais de 500, 600 e 700ºC. Os resíduos foram carbonizados in natura e após extração em água quente para remoção dos extrativos. Foram analisados os rendimentos gravimétricos, as análises químicas e o poder calorífico superior. A presença de extrativos solúveis em água quente dos resíduos das madeiras pouco influenciaram no rendimento gravimétrico e na composição química imediata do carvão vegetal, contudo apresentou maior poder calorífico superior, menor teor de hidrogênio e nitrogênio. O aumento da temperatura final de carbonização reduziu o rendimento gravimétrico em carvão vegetal, o teor de materiais voláteis e de hidrogênio, havendo aumento do teor de carbono fixo, teor de carbono e poder calorífico superior. Os tratamentos com as melhores características energéticas foram os carvões de Ipê e Maçaranduba com extrativos produzidos a 600ºC, além do carvão de Ipê e Maçaranduba com e sem extrativos obtidos a 700ºC.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of extractives soluble in hot water, besides final carbonization temperatures, on the gravimetric yield and properties of charcoal for waste of three native forest species from the Amazon region. Waste cuttings of Ipé, Grapia and Maçaranduba species, from the machine processing for joinery of a company in the State of Pará, were used. Carbonization was carried out in an adapted electric furnace with a heating rate of 1.67°C min-1 and final temperatures of 500, 600 and 700°C. The waste was carbonized fresh after extraction in hot water to remove extractives. Gravimetric yields were analyzed, as well as chemical features and high heating value. In the evaluation of the experiment, arranged in a factorial scheme with three factors (species x temperature x material with and without extraction), and Principal Component Analysis used too. The presence of extractives (soluble in hot water) from wood waste had little influence on the gravimetric yield and immediate chemical composition of charcoal; however, it showed a greater high heating value and lower contents of hydrogen and nitrogen. The increase in the final carbonization temperature reduced the gravimetric yield in charcoal, the content of volatile materials and hydrogen, with a higher content of fixed carbon, carbon and high heating value. The treatments with the best energy characteristics were obtained from Ipé and Maçaranduba charcoals with extractives produced at 600°C, in addition to Ipê and Maçaranduba charcoals with and without extractives obtained at 700°C.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify eucalyptus clones for the production of sawed timber based on dendrometric variables and longitudinal residual deformation (LRD), analyzing the correlation between these characteristics. 20 Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla clones with 13 years of age were analyzed. The crown size, diameter at breast height (DBH) and bark thickness were measured. There was a significant difference between the clones for DBH, LRD and bark thickness. There was no significant correlation between DBH and DRL. The correlation was significant between DBH and crown size, its being possible to affirm that crown size affects the diametrical growth of trees. DBH and bark thickness were also significantly correlated, in so far as trees with a wider diameter possess thicker bark. It was possible to select clones with better potential for sawed timber production, that is to say, elevated DBH with a reduced LRD.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a influência da idade, irrigação e espaçamento no volume e densidade básica da madeira de eucalipto. Os materiais utilizados foram dois clones Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla com idades de 6 e 12 meses provenientes de plantios em duas regiões, uma irrigada e outra região não irrigada, com espaçamentos de 3×0,5; 1,5×2, 3×1; 3×2 e 3×3 m. O volume foi determinado conforme o método de Smalian, sendo determinada também a densidade básica ponderada. Os maiores valores de volume de madeira por hectare foram obtidos nos espaçamentos mais densos e na região irrigada. Nos espaçamentos mais amplos, houve maiores valores de densidade básica da madeira para o clone A, no entanto, no clone B não houve variação em função do espaçamento. Ao comparar os valores médios de densidade para os clones entre região irrigada e não irrigada, os resultados foram iguais na grande maioria dos espaçamentos estudados.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the influence of age, irrigation and spacing, on the volume and basic density of Eucalyptus wood. We used two clones of Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla with age of six and twelve months, sowed in two regions, one irrigated and other unirrigated, with spacing of 3×0.5, 1.5×2, 3×1, 3×2 and 3×3 m. The volume was estimated according to the method of Smalian as well as the weighted density. The larger volume of wood per hectare values were obtained in the close spacing and irrigated region. Wider spacing showed higher specific gravity values timber for clone A; however, clone B didn’t change with spacing. The comparison of average density values for the clones in irrigated and non-irrigated areas, showed similar results in most studied spacings.

RESUMO A utilização da biomassa como fonte de energia alternativa tem obtido destaque por suas características energéticas, contribuição ambiental e por ser fonte de energia renovável em curto período de produção. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a produção da biomassa e sequestro de carbono de eucalipto em diferentes condições de crescimento. Foram determinadas a densidade básica da madeira, volume individual com e sem casca, biomassa seca, carbono acumulado, dióxido de carbono assimilado e estimativa energética dos componentes da parte aérea de dois clones do híbrido de E. grandis x E. urophylla aos 6 e 12 meses de idade, em diferentes espaçamentos e provenientes de duas áreas, uma irrigada e outra não irrigada. Os maiores valores de biomassa seca e massa de carbono foram provenientes dos clones nos espaçamentos mais adensados e região irrigada. O efeito da irrigação foi significativo nas variáveis estudadas apenas nos clones com 12 meses. A quantidade de CO2 assimilada no fuste, folha e galho foram maiores nos espaçamentos mais amplos e região irrigada dos clones com 12 meses. A estimativa energética do fuste aumentou com a ampliação do espaçamento. Entre os componentes arbóreos, a casca sofreu menor influência dos espaçamentos e irrigação.

ABSTRACT The use of biomass as an alternative energy source has been gaining attention because of its energy characteristics and environmental contribution and because it is renewable in short production periods. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the biomass production and carbon sequestration of eucalyptus grown under different conditions. The basic density of the wood, stem volume with and without bark and dry biomass, accumulated carbon, assimilated carbon dioxide and estimated energy for each shoot component were determined for two hybrid clones of E. grandis x E. urophylla at 6 and 12 months of age, grown at different spacing in two different areas, one with and one without irrigation. The highest dry biomass and carbon accumulation values were observed for plants grown at smaller spacing and with irrigation. A significant effect of irrigation on the variables quantified was only observed for 12-month-old plants. The amount of assimilated CO2 in the stem, leaves and branches was higher for 12-month-old plants grown at larger spacing and with irrigation. The estimated energy of the stem increased with increased spacing. Bark was the shoot component least influenced by spacing and irrigation.

RESUMO O objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar a qualidade do tratamento preservativo de moirões de Eucalyptus sp. pelo método de substituição da seiva e comparar a penetração por meio dos métodos tradicionais e de segmentação fotocolorimétrica. Os moirões, com comprimento de 2,0 metros e diâmetro entre 8 e 12 cm, foram expostos às concentrações de 2; 3 e 4% de ingredientes ativos de produto a base de CCB, durante 10 dias. Foram analisadas as penetrações por duas metodologias, sendo uma pelo software Image Pro Plus 4.5, por meio de desempenho de segmentação fotocolorimétrica, e analisadas a retenção do produto em quatro posições nos moirões tratados. As peças submetidas aos tratamentos obtiveram baixa penetração, e por consequência, os valores de retenção foram inferiores do exigido para o contato direto com o solo. Por outro lado, a metodologia proposta por desempenho de segmentação fotocolorimétrica mostrou-se eficiente e, pode ser uma alternativa para determinar a penetração de forma mais precisa e ágil.

ABSTRACT The research object was evaluating the quality of preserving treatment of Eucalyptus sp. fence posts by the sap substitution method and comparing the penetration through the traditional and photocolorimetry segmentation methods. The fence posts, 2,0 meters long and with a diameter between 8 and 12 cm, were exposed to 2, 3 and 4% concentrations of CCB based-product active ingredients for 10 days. The penetrations were analyzed using two methodologies, one by the Image Pro Plus 4.5 software, using photocolorimetry segmentation method performance, and by analyzing the product retention in four positions of the treated fence posts. The treatment submitted pieces attained low penetration and, thus, the retention values were less than the required for direct contact with the ground. On the other hand, the proposed photocolorimetry segmentation methodology was efficient and could be an alternative to determine a more precise and fast penetration.

RESUMO A norma ASTM D 1666-11 (AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING AND MATERIALS - ASTM, 2011) classifica a qualidade da superfície de peças de madeira, após o seu processamento mecânico, embora essa classificação seja difícil de ser realizada visualmente e o uso de algumas ferramentas, como o laser de estado sólido, pode facilitar tal classificação. Assim, o objetivo foi avaliar o uso da técnica sunset laser para qualificar superfícies processadas mecanicamente com qualidades visuais semelhantes. Utilizou-se a tora da base de uma árvore de Khaya ivorensis e outra de K. senegalensis, ambas com 11 anos. Foram confeccionados 22 corpos de prova de dimensões 600x140x30 mm (CxLxE) de cada espécie. Os corpos de prova foram aplainados com velocidades de 2400, 3600 e 4000 min-1 e as velocidades de avanço foram pré-determinadas em 6 e 15 m.min-1. Em seguida, os corpos de prova foram iluminados com a técnica sunset laser e fotografados na alta resolução, as imagens foram transferidas para o software Image J. Para avaliar a qualidade da superfície pela técnica sunset laser utilizou-se as áreas de defeitos na madeira que são classificadas como regular e ruim pela norma ASTM D 1666-11 (ASTM, 2011). Houve diferença de classificação dos defeitos da madeira entre os dois métodos utilizados, sendo que 31 corpos de prova classificados como regular pela análise visual, 8 deles foram classificados como ruim pelo método do laser. A utilização do laser de estado sólido na técnica sunset laser mostrou-se mais eficiente para avaliar pequenas diferenças de defeitos da madeira processada mecanicamente em comparação com a avaliação visual.

ABSTRACT The ASTM D 1666-11 (2011) norm classifies the quality of wood surface pieces after its mechanical processing. Although this classification is difficult to achieve visually, the use of some tools, such as solid state laser, can facilitate this classification. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of sunset laser to qualify mechanically processed surfaces with similar visual qualities. We used a log from the base of a Khaya ivorensis tree and one from a K. senegalensis tree, both 11 years old. 22 specimens of dimensions 600x140x30 mm (CxLxE) were made of each species. The specimens were flattened with speeds of 2400, 3600 and 4000 min-1 and advanced speeds were predetermined in 6 and 15 m.min-1. Then the samples were illuminated with sunset laser and photographed at high resolution, the images were transferred to the software Image J. To evaluate the sunset laser, areas of defects in wood that are classified as regular and bad by ASTM D 1666-11 (2011) were used. There was a difference in classification of wood defects between the two methods used, from the 31 specimens classified as regularly by visual analysis, 8 of them were classified as bad by the laser method. The use of solid-state laser in the sunset laser technique was more efficient in evaluating small differences in mechanically processed wood defects compared to visual evaluation.

RESUMO A avaliação da resistência natural da madeira a organismos xilófagos é de importância fundamental na escolha de espécies a serem utilizadas na construção civil e na indústria de móveis. Assim, avaliaram-se os efeitos do teor de extrativos e da densidade na resistência biológica das madeiras deAcacia mangium, Casuarina equisetifolia, Corymbia torelliana, Eucalyptus cloeziana, Tectona grandis e Caesalpinia echinata ao térmita xilófago Nasutitermes corniger, em condições de laboratório. Corpos de prova, com dimensões de 2,00 x 2,54 x 0,64 cm (radial x longitudinal x tangencial) foram retirados de cada madeira em quatro posições no sentido medula-casca (cerne interno, cerne mediano, cerne externo e alburno). As madeiras foram expostas à ação dos térmitas por 28 dias em ensaio de alimentação forçada. As amostras não selecionadas para o ensaio com os térmitas foram transformadas em serragem e os extrativos obtidos da fração que passou pela peneira de 40 e ficou retida na de 60 "mesh". A resistência natural da madeira, dentre as posições medula-casca, para as espécies estudadas, não está correlacionada com a densidade e teor de extrativos das mesmas. No entanto, entre as madeiras, aquelas com maiores densidade e teor de extrativos são mais resistentes. As madeiras com maior resistência biológica ao térmitaNasutitermes corniger (menores perda de massa, desgaste e tempo de sobrevivência dos insetos) são Corymbia torelliana eCaesalpinia echinata e a de menor resistência aCasuarina equisetifolia.

ABSTRACT The evaluation of the natural resistance of wood to wood-destroying organisms is of fundamental importance in the choice of species to be used in buildings and furniture industry. Thus, the effects of extractives and wood density on biological resistance of Acacia mangium, Casuarina equisetifolia, Corymbia torelliana, Eucalyptus cloeziana, Tectona grandis andCaesalpinia echinata woods to the xylophagous termiteNasutitermes corniger was evaluated under laboratory conditions. Test samples, with dimensions of 2.00 x 2.54 x 0.64 cm (radial x tangential x longitudinal) in four positions in pith-bark direction (internal heart, intermediate heart, outer heart and sapwood) were taken. The woods were exposed to termite action for 28 days in no-choice feeding test. The samples not selected for the termite test were turned into sawdust and the extractive contents were obtained using the shavings that passed through the sieve of 40 and were retained in the sieve of 60 mesh. The wood natural resistance, within the pith-bark positions, for the studied species, is not correlated with the density and extractive content. However, among the woods, those with higher density and extractive content are more resistant. The woods with greater biological resistance to the termite Nasutitermes corniger(smaller mass loss, waste and survival time of insects) are Corymbia torelliana and Caesalpinia echinata and of less resistance is Casuarina equisetifolia.

RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do espaçamento do plantio da madeira de eucalipto, quanto às suas características dendrométricas e a deformação residual longitudinal (DRL) da madeira e as relações entre essas variáveis. O material utilizado foi o Eucalyptus benthamii aos 5 anos de idade nos espaçamentos 2 × 3, 3 × 3, 3 × 4 e 4 × 4 m, a projeção da copa foi determinada através da medição de oito raios com ângulos variáveis, sendo elaborados mapas da distribuição e projeção da copa. As medições da DRL foram à 1,30 m do solo nas quatro direções cardinais, em árvores vivas, com o auxílio de extensômetro (Growth Strain Gauge), pelo método CIRAD-Fôret. Nos resultados houve grande variabilidade das variáveis de crescimento e dos níveis de tensão de crescimento para os diferentes espaçamentos. Os menores valores médios de DRL foram observados na direção sul, o aumento do espaçamento não alterou significativamente os valores da DRL. As correlações de maiores magnitudes ocorreram entre os valores máximos de DRL e as variáveis de crescimento árvore.

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of planting eucalyptus wood with respect to its dendrometric characteristics and longitudinal residual strain (LRS) of the wood, and the relationships between these variables. The material used was Eucalyptus benthamii at five years of age in 2×3, 3×3, 3×4 and 4×4 m spacing. The projection of the crown was determined by measuring eight spokes with variable angles, and maps of crown distribution and projection were prepared. Measurements of LRS were taken 1.30 m above the ground in the four cardinal directions in living trees, with the aid of strain meters (Growth Strain Gauge) by the CIRAD-Forêt method. There was great variability in the results of the growth variables and levels of growth stresses for different spacing. The lowest average values of LRS were observed in the south direction, and increased spacing did not significantly alter the LRS values. Correlations between LRS and growth variables were only found with maximum LRS values for each tree.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência da idade, da irrigação e do espaçamento na composição química da madeira de eucalipto. O material utilizado constituiu de dois clones de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla com idades de seis e 12 meses, provenientes de plantios em duas regiões, uma irrigada e outra não irrigada, com espaçamentos de 3 x 0,5; 1,5 x 2; 3 x 1; 3 x 2; e 3 x 3 m. Na análise química da madeira, foi realizada uma amostragem composta dos seis discos obtidos ao longo do fuste das árvores. Ao final do trabalho, foi possível verificar a influência da idade, do espaçamento e da irrigação na composição química da madeira e que o teor de holocelulose não seguiu padrão de tendência, havendo diferentes resultados em cada tratamento. Maiores valores de teor de extrativos ocorreram nos clones não irrigados e com idade de seis meses, não sendo verificadas influências dos espaçamentos. Os maiores resultados de teor de lignina foram obtidos nos maiores espaçamentos, embora não tenha sido verificado tendência de resultados de teor de lignina para idade e tratamento com irrigação. O teor de cinzas foi superior na idade de seis meses, e não se verificou tendência de resultados nos diferentes espaçamentos e regiões.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of age, irrigation and spacing on the chemical composition of eucalyptus wood. The materials used were two clones of Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla, ages of 6 and 12 months, from planting in two regions, one irrigated and the other not irrigated, with spacings of 3 x 0.5; 1.5 x 2; 3 x 1; 3 x 2; and 3 x 3 meters. In the chemical analysis of the wood, a sampling was conducted composed of six discs obtained along the tree trunk. At the end of this study, it was possible to notice the influence of age, spacing and irrigation in the chemical composition of the wood, and that the content of holocellulose did not follow trend pattern, with different results for each treatment. Higher values of extractives content occurred in non-irrigated clones and aged six months, with no influence of spacing. The major results of lignin content were obtained in greater spacings, although results tendency of lignin content was not seen for age and irrigated treatment. The ash content was higher at the age of six months and there was no results tendency for different spacings and regions.
