Abstract Identifying genome regions subject to selection in local breeds of Brazil is an opportunity to elucidate the C. hircus genome plasticity, flowing the colonization history of the country. Using SNP Bead Chip Illumina 50K genotyping of Brazilian Anglo-Nubian (standardized breed) and Marota (local endangered population from the semiarid area of Brazil) to show outliers loci in genome regions subject to selection. After applying data quality control, 45,600 SNPs were included in this investigation. Principal component analysis (PCAdapt) and FDIST2 analysis signalized 14 genomic regions more affected by selection in the Brazilian dry zone environment. The genome study signalized regions that are close to the sequences of genes related to growth and embryonic skeletal development (FGF12, AMPD2, OSTN). In addition, flagged regions close to the genes UTSB2 and SLC5A2 contribute to research on functional adaptation with low water needs and poor nutritive diet to survive. Both genes encode proteins that act on osmotic pathways and avoid cell flooding on stress cell responses. Further studies on the genetic role and involvement of these outliers’ genomic regions, building a robust conceptual high-resolution map of natural selection drives, help to achieve hardiness candidate genes linked to the evolutionary history of Capra hircus in the semiarid area of Brazil.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar as características de carcaça e carne de novilhos Aberdeen Angus castrados cirurgicamente em duas idades ou imunocastrados com dois protocolos. Foram utilizados 48 bezerros, monitorados a partir do nascimento e desmamados, com idade e peso médio inicial de seis meses e de 160±16,54kg, respectivamente. Os animais foram distribuídos aleatoriamente nos seguintes tratamentos: castração cirúrgica ao nascer; castração cirúrgica ao desmame; imunocastração com três doses da vacina Bopriva® e imunocastração com quatro doses da vacina Bopriva®. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente ao acaso. Novilhos imunocastrados com três doses apresentaram maior quebra ao resfriamento e menor espessura de gordura ajustada para 100kg de carcaça fria que castrados cirurgicamente ao nascer (P<0,05). A imunocastração com três doses proporcionou incremento na participação de músculo, em relação às castrações cirúrgicas, mas reduziu a gordura em relação à castração cirúrgica ao nascimento (P<0,05). A relação músculo:osso foi superior nos imunocastrados com três doses em relação a castrados cirurgicamente no desmame (P<0,05). Apesar de variações na participação tecidual na carcaça, a castração imunológica mostrou-se viável em substituição à castração cirúrgica, não alterando os padrões qualitativos da carne.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the carcass and meat characteristics of Aberdeen Angus steers surgically castrated at two ages or immunocastrated with two protocols. Forty-eight calves we used, monitored from birth and weaned, with age and initial mean weight of six months and 160±16.54kg, respectively. The animals were randomly assigned to the following treatments: surgical castration at birth; surgical castration at weaning; immunocastration with three doses of the Bopriva ® vaccine and immunocastration with four doses of the Bopriva ® vaccine. The experimental design was completely randomized. Immunocastrated steers with three doses had a greater cooling break and lower fat thickness adjusted for 100kg of cold carcass than surgically castrated at birth (P< 0.05). Immunocastration with three doses provided an increase in muscle participation in relation to surgical castration but reduced fat in relation to surgical castration at birth (P< 0.05). The muscle:bone ratio was higher in the immunocastrated with three doses compared to surgically castrated at weaning (P< 0.05). Despite variations in tissue involvement in the carcass, the immunological castration proved to be viable to replace surgical castration, not changing the quality of the meat standards.

RESUMO: Herbicidas do grupo das imidazolinonas têm sido utilizados em arroz irrigado e apresentado longa persistência no solo, principalmente em áreas de várzea, com baixa drenagem, podendo ocasionar contaminação ambiental. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar a lixiviação e o residual dos herbicidas pertencentes ao grupo das imidazolinonas em sistemas de irrigação por aspersão e inundação. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, sendo realizada a aplicação dos herbicidas imazethapyr, imzethapyr + imazapic e imazapyr + imazapic em solo irrigado por inundação e aspersão. Posteriormente, o solo foi coletado nas camadas de 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 e 20-25 cm e acondicionado em vasos plásticos com capacidade para 500 mL, para se efetuar a semeadura de tomate como planta bioindicadora da presença dos herbicidas pertencentes às imidazolinonas. Avaliou-se a fitotoxicidade, o comprimento e a massa seca da parte aérea das plantas de tomate aos 10 e 20 dias após a emergência. Os herbicidas do grupo químico das imidazolinonas apresentaram alto potencial de lixiviação e persistência, cujos efeitos permanecem por mais de 180 dias após a aplicação. A degradação do imazethapyr, imazethapyr + imazapic e imazapyr + imazapic, nas camadas de 0-15 cm, foi superior em solo com irrigação por aspersão, comparativamente à irrigação por inundação, com base nos sintomas apresentados pela cultura bioindicadora. Pode-se afirmar que solos não inundados apresentam maior capacidade de degradação dos herbicidas pertencentes ao grupo químico das imidazolinonas.

ABSTRACT: Herbicides of the imidazolinone group have been used in irrigated rice and presented a long persistence in the soil, especially in floodplain areas with a low drainage, and could cause environmental contamination. This study aims to evaluate the leaching and residual of herbicides belonging to the imidazolinone group in sprinkler and flood irrigation systems. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions, with the application of the herbicides imazethapyr, imazethapyr + imazapic, and imazapyr + imazapic in soil irrigated by flooding and sprinkling. Subsequently, the soil was collected from the layers of 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, and 20-25 cm and packed in 500 mL capacity plastic pots in order to sow tomato as a bioindicator plant of the presence of the herbicides belonging to the imidazolinones. Phytotoxicity, length, and shoot dry matter mass of tomato plants were evaluated at 10 and 20 days after emergence. The herbicides of the imidazolinone chemical group presented a high potential for leaching and persistence with effects for more than 180 days after application. Based on the symptoms presented by the sensitive crop, the degradation of imazethapyr, imazethapyr + imazapic, and imazapyr + imazapic in the 0-15 cm layers was higher in soil with sprinkler irrigation when compared to flood irrigation. Thus, non-flooded soils present a greater capacity to degrade the herbicides belonging to the imidazolinone chemical group.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a eficiência e a seletividade de herbicidas na cultura do arroz submetida aos sistemas de irrigação por aspersão e inundação. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso, arranjado em esquema fatorial 2x9. No fator A foram alocados os sistemas de irrigação (aspersão ou inundação), e no B, os tratamentos herbicidas (T1 - sem herbicida; T2 - imazethapyr + imazapic - 75 + 25 g i.a. ha-1; T3 - imazethapyr + imazapic - 150 + 50 g i.a. ha-1; T4 - imazapic + imazapyr - 73,5 + 24,5 g i.a. ha-1; T5 - imazapic + imazapyr - 147 + 49 g i.a. ha-1; T6 - imazethapyr - 106 g i.a. ha-1; T7 - imazethapyr - 212 g i.a. ha-1; T8 e T9 - aplicação sequencial de imazethapyr + imazapic - 75 + 25 g i.a. ha-1 e imazapic + imazapyr - 73,5 + 24,5 g i.a. ha-1, respectivamente). A aplicação de imazethapyr e das misturas formuladas de imazethapyr + imazapic e imazapyr + imazapic proporcionou controle maior que 97% nos sistemas de irrigação por inundação e aspersão. A seletividade dos herbicidas não é alterada no sistema de irrigação por aspersão, comparativamente ao sistema por inundação.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to assess the efficiency and selectivity of herbicides in rice submitted to sprinkler and flood irrigation systems. The experimental design was a randomized block design arranged in a 2 × 9 factorial scheme. Factor A consisted of irrigation systems (sprinkler and flood) and Factor B consisted of herbicide treatments (T1 - control; T2 - imazethapyr + imazapic, 75 + 25 g a.i. ha-1; T3 - imazethapyr + imazapic, 150 + 50 g a.i. ha-1; T4 - imazapic + imazapyr, 73.5 + 24.5 g a.i. ha-1; T5 - imazapic + imazapyr, 147 + 49 g a.i. ha-1; T6 - imazethapyr, 106 g a.i. ha-1; T7 - imazethapyr, 212 g a.i. ha-1; T8 - sequential application of imazethapyr + imazapic, 75 + 25 g a.i. ha-1; and T9 - sequential application of imazapic + imazapyr, 73.5 + 24.5 g a.i. ha-1). The application of imazethapyr and formulated mixtures of imazethapyr + imazapic and imazapyr + imazapic provided a control higher than 97% in flood and sprinkler irrigation systems. Herbicide selectivity is not altered in the sprinkler irrigation system when compared to the flood irrigation system.

Maternal smoking is a risk factor for progeny obesity. We have previously shown, in a rat model of neonatal tobacco smoke exposure, a mild increase in food intake and a considerable increase in visceral adiposity in the adult offspring. Males also had secondary hyperthyroidism, while females had only higher T4. Since brown adipose tissue (BAT) hypofunction is related to obesity, here we tested the hypothesis that higher levels of thyroid hormones are not functional in BAT, suggesting a lower metabolic rate. We evaluated autonomic nerve activity in BAT and its function in adult rats that were exposed to tobacco smoke during lactation. At birth, litters were adjusted to 3 male and 3 female pups/litter. From postnatal day (PND) 3 to 21, Wistar lactating rats and their pups were divided into SE group, smoke-exposed in a cigarette smoking machine (4 times/day) and C group, exposed to filtered air. Offspring were sacrificed at PND180. Adult SE rats of both genders had lower interscapular BAT autonomic nervous system activity, with higher BAT mass but no change in morphology. BAT UCP1 and CPT1a protein levels were decreased in the SE groups of both genders. Male SE rats had lower β3-AR, TRα1, and TRβ1 expression while females showed lower PGC1α expression. BAT Dio2 mRNA and hypothalamic POMC and MC4R levels were similar between groups. Hypothalamic pAMPK level was higher in SE males and lower in SE females. Thus, neonatal cigarette smoke exposure induces lower BAT thermogenic capacity, which can be obesogenic at adulthood.

RESUMO O trabalho teve por objetivo confirmar a ocorrência de resistência múltipla de biótipos de sagitária (Sagittaria montevidensis - SAGMO) a herbicidas inibidores da acetolactato sintase (ALS) e do fotossistema II (FSII), por meio de curvas de dose-resposta. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação no período de outubro de 2012 a março de 2013, em Pelotas, RS, através do delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial triplo: dois biótipos de SAGMO (SAGMO 35 - suscetível e SAGMO 32 - com suspeita de resistência múltipla a herbicidas inibidores da acetolactato sintase - ALS e do fotossistema II - FSII), quatro herbicidas (penoxsulam, (imazethapyr+imazapic), bentazon e saflufenacil) e doses dos mesmos herbicidas, sendo oito doses para o SAGMO 35 (1/32x, 1/16x, 1/8x, 1/4x, 1/2x, 0x, 1x e 2x) e oito para o biótipo SAGMO 35 (0x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x e 64x), sendo x igual à dose registrada para o controle dessa planta daninha. O biótipo SAGMO 32 apresentou valores elevados de fator de resistência para penoxsulam, (imazethapyr+imazapic) e bentazon. Para redução de 50% da massa seca da parte área do biótipo resistente, são necessárias doses 138 e 2,46 vezes maiores do que as exigidas para o biótipo suscetível, dos herbicidas (imazethapyr+imazapic) e bentazon, respectivamente. O saflufenacil pode ser utilizado para controle de populações deSAGMO com resistência múltipla aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS e FSII na cultura do arroz irrigado.

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate the occurance of multiple resistance of Sagittaria montevidensis (SAGMO) biotypes to acetolactate synthase (ALS) and photosystem II (PSII) inhibiting herbicides through dose-response experiments. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse from October 2012 to March 2013, in Pelotas, RS. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replications. Treatments were arranged in a triple factorial design: two biotypes of S. montevidensis(SAGMO 35 - susceptible to herbicides and SAGMO 32 - suspected to be multiple resistance to ALS and PSII inhibiting herbicides), four herbicides (penoxsulam, (imazethapyr+imazapic), bentazon and saflufenacil) and 8 rates of these herbicides (1/32x, 1/16x, 1/8x, 1/4x, 1/2x, 0x, 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x and 64x). SAGMO 32 biotype presented high levels of resistance to penoxsulam, (imazethapyr+imazapic) and bentazon. For a 50% reduction in dry matter of the resistant biotype rate of 138 and 2.46 times higher than the label required for the susceptible biotype of the herbicides (imazethapyr+imazapic) and bentazon, respectively, are required. Saflufenacil may be used successfully to controlSagittaria montevidensis resistant in irrigated rice.

Além do impacto ambiental, a deriva de glyphosate pode causar danos sobre culturas sensíveis a esse herbicida. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de adjuvantes e pontas de pulverização na deriva de glyphosate aplicado via terrestre. O estudo foi conduzido em campo, arranjado em esquema fatorial (3 x 9), sendo o primeiro fator constituído por três pontas de pulverização: uma de jato plano (Teejet XR 110.015) e duas de jato plano com indução de ar (Teejet AIXR 110.015 e Teejet TTI 110.015). O segundo fator foi composto por sete adjuvantes: Break Thru(r) (0,1% v.v.), Grap' Oil(r) (0,5% v.v.), Grap Super Gun(r) (0,03% v.v.), Iharol(r) (1% v.v.), NP-10(r) (0,075 L ha-1), Dash HC(r) (0,5% v.v.) e Emultec R(r) (0,05 L ha-1). Os adjuvantes foram adicionados à calda de aplicação juntamente com o herbicida Roundup Transorb R(r) na dose de 2,16 kg e.a. ha-1. Além desses, foram incluídos dois tratamentos testemunha: um sem aplicação e outro com aplicação de glyphosate sem adjuvante. As variáveis avaliadas foram a distância percorrida pelas gotas para fora do alvo, a fitotoxicidade causada pela deriva, o diâmetro mediano volumétrico, a densidade de gotas e o volume recuperado pela utilização de papéis hidrossensíveis. As pontas de pulverização TTI 110.015 e AIXR 110.015 proporcionaram menor deriva que a ponta XR 110.015. As pontas TTI e AIXR apresentaram menor densidade de gotas e maior diâmetro mediano volumétrico, quando comparadas à ponta XR. A utilização dos adjuvantes NP-10(r) e Emultec R(r) com a ponta de pulverização XR 110.015 aumentou a deriva quando comparada com a aplicação de glyphosate sem adjuvante, porém não diferiram dos demais adjuvantes. O adjuvante Emultec R(r) aumentou o DMV das gotas, quando geradas pela ponta XR 110.015. A utilização dos adjuvantes Grap' Oil(r), Grap Super Gun(r), Iharol(r) e Dash HC(r) diminuiu a densidade de gotas derivadas, quando geradas pela ponta XR 110.015.

Glyphosate drift can cause environmental impact and also affect crops that are sensitive to this herbicide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different adjuvants and different nozzles on glyphosate drift in terrestrial applications. The study was conducted in the field, arranged in a factorial design (3 x 9): factor A consisted of three different spray nozzles: one flat spray nozzle (Teejet = XR 110.015) and two air induction flat spray nozzles (Teejet AIXR 110.015 and Teejet TTI 110.015). Factor B was composed of seven adjuvants: Break Thru(r) (0.1% v.v.), Grap' Oil(r) (0.5% v.v.), Grap Super Gun(r) (0.03% v.v.), Iharol(r) (1% v.v.), NP-10(r) (0.075 L ha-1), Dash HC(r) (0.5% v.v.) and Emultec R(r) (0.05 L ha-1). The adjuvants were added to Roundup Transorb R(r) herbicide at 2.16 a.i. ha-1. Moreover, there were two control treatments, one untreated check and another one with application of glyphosate without adjuvant. The distance of droplets off-target, injury caused by drift, volumetric median diameter (VMD), droplet density and volume were evaluated by water sensitive paper cards. The TTI 110.015 spray nozzle resulted in lesser drift when compared to the AIXR 110.015 and XR 110.015 nozzles. The TTI and AIXR nozzles showed lower droplet density and greater VMD compared with the XR nozzle. The use of NP-10(r) and Emultec R(r) adjuvants with spray nozzle XR 110.015 increases drift. Adjuvant Emultec R(r) increases VMD droplets when used with the XR 110.015 nozzle. The use of adjuvants Grap' Oil(r), Grap Super Gun(r), Iharol(r) and Dash HC(r) decrease density derived droplets when generated with the XR 110.015 nozzle.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi detectar em 101 amostras de E. coli isoladas de bezerros com e sem diarreia, fatores de virulência associados aos patotipos de E. coli enterotoxigênica e enterohemorrágica. Os fatores de virulência de E. coli Stx1 (Shiga toxina), Stx2, Ehly (Enterohemolisina), o gene eae, LT-II (enterotoxina termo-lábil), STa (toxina termo-estável), e adesinas K99 e F41 foram detectados por PCR. Os sorogrupos foram determinados por métodos sorológicos e a produção de Stx foi observada através de ensaios biológicos em células Vero. A frequência de detecção do gene eae foi maior nos isolados de bezerros com diarreia (35/58, 60,3%) do que em bezerros saudáveis (8/43, 18,6%; P < 0.001). O gene da toxina Stx1 foi detectado em alta frequência em amostras diarreicas (24/58, 40,3%), bem como em amostras não diarréicas (19/43, 44,2%) e todas as amostras positivas para toxina Stx em PCR mostraram citotoxicidade em células Vero. Stx2 foi encontrada em dez amostras, Ehly em oito amostras, e LT-II em duas amostras. Vinte e seis amostras foram negativas para todos os ensaios de PCR, incluindo para as adesinas F41 e K99. Os sorogrupos O7, O23, O4, O8, O153 e O156 foram detectados com maior frequência. O trabalho mostra que amostras de E. coli isoladas de bovinos apresentam fatores de virulência semelhantes à isolados de casos de doenças em humanos e possivelmente é uma fonte para STEC potencialmente patogênicas para humanos.

The aim of this work was to test 101 strains of E. coli for virulence factors associated with enterotoxigenic and enterohemorrhagic pathotypes of E. coli isolated from diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves. The virulence factors of E. coli Stx1 (Shiga toxin), Stx2, Ehly (Enterohemolysin), the eae gene, LT-II (heat-labile enterotoxin), STa (heat-stable toxin), and adhesins K99 and F41 were detected by PCR. Serogroups were determined by serological methods and Stx production was observed by biological assays in Vero cells. The frequency of the eae gene was higher in isolates from diarrheic calves (35/58, 60.3%) than in non-diarrheic calves (8/43, 18.6%; P < 0.001). The gene for Stx1 occurred at high frequencies in the diarrheic strains (24/58, 41.3%) as well as in non-diarrheic (19/43, 44.2%) ones and all strains that were Stx positive by PCR showed cytotoxicity in Vero cells. Stx2 was found in ten strains, Ehly in eight strains, and LT-II in only two strains. Twenty-eight strains were negative for all of the PCR assays, including for F41 and K99 adhesins. The serogroups O7, O23, O4, O8, O153 and O156 were observed most frequently. Our results show that strains of E. coli isolated from cattle have similar virulence factors genes to strains isolated from cases of diseases in humans and may be a source of potentially pathogenic STEC for humans.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos do Nim-I-Go® sobre pupas e adultos de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). As concentrações (%) do Nim-I-Go® utilizadas no experimento com pupas foram as seguintes: 0,5; 1,0; 2,0 e 5,0; correspondendo a (mg de azadirachtina/L de água) 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, 20 mg/L e 50 mg/L, respectivamente. No experimento com adultos foram utilizadas as seguintes concentrações: 0,25; 0,5; 0,75; 1,0 e 2,0; correspondendo a (mg de azadirachtina/L) 2,5 mg/L, 5,0 mg/L, 7,5 mg/L, 10 mg/L e 20 mg/L, respectivamente. Clorpirifós foi utilizado como testemunha negativa (0,48 g i.a./L) nos dois experimentos e água como testemunha positiva. Os bioensaios foram conduzidos a 25 ± 2 o C, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12 horas. As pulverizações foram realizadas por meio de torre de Potter com aplicação de 1,5 ± 0,5 mg de calda química/cm2. Avaliaram-se a viabilidade dos ovos, a sobrevivência de pupas e adultos e o efeito dos inseticidas sobre a capacidade reprodutiva dos indivíduos. A toxicidade foi calculada em função do efeito total (E), conforme metodologia padrão estabelecida pela “IOBC”. Nim-I-Go® nas diversas concentrações foi inócuo a pupas e adultos do predador. Clorpirifós foi nocivo para pupas e adultos de C. externa.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of Nim-I-Go™ on pupae and adults of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae). The neem-based insecticide Nim-I-Go™ was used in the following concentrations (%) in the pupae trial: 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 5.0; equivalent to (in mg of azadirachtin/L of water) 5 mg/L, 10 mg/L, 20 mg/L and 50 mg/L, respectively. In the larvae trial the following concentrations were used: 0.25; 0.5; 0.75; 1.0 and 2.0; equivalent to (in mg of azadirachtin/L) 2.5 mg/L, 5.0 mg/L, 7.5 mg/L, 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L, respectively. Chlorpyrifos was used as a negative control (0.48 g a.i./L) in both trials, and water as a positive control. The bioassays were carried out at 25 ± 2o C, RH of 70 ± 10%, and 12-h of photophase. The sprayings were carried out using a Potter’s tower, ensuring the application of 1.5 ± 0.5 mg/cm2. Survival of pupae and adults, and the effects of the insecticides on the reproductive capacity of this predator were evaluated. The total toxic effect (E) of the insecticides was calculated according to the standard methodology established by IOBC. Nim-I-Go™ was harmless to pupae and adults of C. externa. Chlorpyrifos was harmful to this natural enemy.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve por objetivo identificar as espécies de ácaro encontradas em frutos de coqueiro (Cocus nucifera) (Arecaceae) na região do Vale do Rio Doce, leste do Estado de Minas Gerais. As coletas de frutos de coqueiro foram realizadas no período de março de 2002 a outubro de 2003, em 42 propriedades agrícolas. Duas espécies de ácaro foram registradas: Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Acari: Eriophyidae) e Steneotarsonemus furcatus De Leon (Acari: Tarsonemidae). Este é o primeiro registro de A. guerreronis e S. furcatus na Região do Vale do Rio Doce.

ABSTRACT This work was carried out to identify the mite species on coconut fruits (Cocus nucifera) (Arecaceae) in the Vale do Rio Doce region, eastern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Sampling of fruits was made from March of 2002 to October of 2003, on 42 farms. Two species of mites were found: Aceria guerreronis Keifer (Eriophyidae) and Steneotarsonemus furcatus De Leon (Tarsonemidae). This is the first report of A. guerreironis and S. furcatus in the Vale do Rio Doce region.
