Abstract Aim: To evaluate the intensity of training and official badminton matches (international championship) in junior elite players. Methods: Twelve elite players from the Brazilian junior national team (6 male and 6 female) were monitored during 19 training sessions and 50 official men's and women's single and double matches in the XXVII Pan-American Junior Games. Subjects underwent an incremental running step test to determine maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and an individual relationship between heart rate (HR) and VO2max was established to estimate exercise intensity and oxygen uptake at official matches (OMs) and training sessions. HR was monitored during multi-shuttlecock (MS), technical-tactical (TT), and physical (PS) training methods, as well as during simulated matches (SMs) and OMs. Variables such as %HRmax, HR zones, %VO2max, and energy expenditure were also calculated. Results: OM was the most intense activity monitored for male and female athletes, followed by SM according to %HRmax (86.8 ± 4.1% and 84.4 ± 5.0% for female and male, respectively, in OM vs. 74.6 ± 2.3% and 75.0 ± 5.0% for female and male, respectively, in SM). OM mean energy expenditure was 10.7 ± 0.5 kcal.min-1 for females and 14.9 ± 4.6 kcal.min−1 for males. Conclusion: MS training has less physiological demand and OM presented higher intensity. SM, on the other hand, had the closest physiological demand to an OM.

resumo O objetivo do estudo foi verificar a correlação entre a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca de repouso (VFCRepouso) e o desempenho de resistência em jogadoras de futsal, bem como avaliar a confiabilidade do marcador parassimpático. No total, 16 jogadoras de futsal (idade: 22 ± 3 anos; VO2max: 42.3 ± 2.0 ml.kg-1.min-1) foram avaliadas durante a primeira semana de treinamento da pré-temporada. A modulação vagal foi avaliada a partir da VFC de repouso (isto é, raiz quadrada da média das diferenças sucessivas ao quadrado dos intervalos R-R adjacentes - Ln-RMSSD) por dois dias consecutivos, enquanto o desempenho da resistência foi avaliado pelo Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test, Level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1). A correlação de Pearson foi utilizada para analisar a relação entre as variáveis. A confiabilidade foi testada através do coeficiente de correlação intraclasse, coeficiente de variação e análise de concordância de Bland-Altman. Observou-se uma forte correlação entre o índice de VFCrepouso e o desempenho de endurance (r = 0,643; p = 0,007). Por outro lado, repetibilidade aceitável dos índices de repouso vagal, mas com grande variabilidade interindividual (ICC = 0,670, IC = 0,056-0,885, CV = 15,8%). O presente estudo apresentou forte correlação entre Ln-RMSSD e desempenho de endurance, e mesmo com valores aceitáveis de confiabilidade intrasujeito, a VFC em repouso apresentou alta variabilidade interindividual em jogadoras de futsal.

abstract The study aimed to verify the correlation between resting heart rate variability (HRVrest) and endurance performance in female futsal players, as well as to evaluate the reliability of this parasympathetic autonomic marker. A total of 16 female futsal players (age: 22 ± 3 years; VO2max: 42.3 ± 2.0 ml.kg-1.min-1) were evaluated during the first week of preseason training. Vagal modulation was evaluated from the HRVrest (i.e., log-transformed root mean square of successive R-R interval differences - Ln-RMSSD) for two consecutive days, while endurance performance was evaluated by the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test, Level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1). Pearson correlation was used to analyze the relationship between the variables. Strong correlation between the HRVrest index and endurance performance (r = 0.643; p = 0.007). Reliability was tested through the intraclass correlation coefficient, coefficient of variation (CV), and Bland-Altman analysis of the agreement. Furthermore, acceptable repeatability of HRVrest, but with great inter-subject variability (ICC = 0.670, 95%CI = 0.056-0.885, CV = 15.8%). The current study demonstrated a strong correlation between Ln-RMSSD and endurance performance, and despite the acceptable values of intrasubject reliability, HRVrest presented high inter-individual variability in female futsal players.

Resumo Objetivo O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a qualidade do vínculo mãe-filho em três contextos diferentes relacionados ao trabalho de parto, ou seja, parto vaginal, cesariana eletiva e cesariana intraparto. Métodos Estudo clínico observacional, transversal, realizado em duas cidades do estado de São Paulo, Brasil. A amostra do estudo foi composta por 81 recém-nascidos sem maiores complicações durante a gravidez e o parto, com idades entre 3 e 4 meses, e suas respectivas mães, com idades entre 20 e 35 anos, primíparas, residentes nas cidades de Palmital e Ourinhos, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. A avaliação da qualidade da interação materno-filial foi realizada por meio de análise de vídeo-imagem, utilizando o Protocolo de Observação da Interação Mãe-Bebê de 0 a 6 meses (POIMB 0-6). Resultados Mães que tiveram parto vaginal tiveram maior quantidade de contato visual ou tentativa de contato visual (p = 0,034), melhor resposta ao comportamento social da criança (p = 0,001) e maior sensibilidade (p = 0,007) que as demais. Os filhos também mostraram maior interação com elas, pois olhavam com mais frequência para o rosto da mãe (p < 0,008) e respondiam com mais frequência ao estímulo comunicativo da mãe (p < 0,001). Conclusão Considerando a ocorrência do parto vaginal, conclui-se que a interação entre a díade mãe-filho é quantitativamente maior e qualitativamente melhor quando comparada à cesariana intraparto ou eletiva.

Abstract Objective The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the quality of mother-child bonding in three different contexts related to the labor, that is, vaginal delivery, elective cesarean section, and intrapartum cesarean section. Methods This was an observational, cross-sectional clinical study conducted in two cities within the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The study sample consisted of 81 babies born without any major complications during pregnancy and labor, aged 3 to 4 months, and their respective mothers, aged between 20 and 35 years old, primiparous, living in the cities of Palmital and Ourinhos, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The evaluation of the quality of the maternal-filial interaction was performed through video-image analysis, using the Mother-baby Interaction Observation Protocol from 0 to 6 months (POIMB 0-6, in the Portuguese acronym). Results Mothers who had vaginal delivery had higher amount of visual contact or attempted visual contact (p = 0.034), better response to the social behavior of the child (p = 0.001) and greater sensitivity (p = 0.007) than the others. Their children also showed more interaction with them, as they looked more frequently at the mother's face (p ≤ 0.008) and responded more frequently to the mother's communicative stimulus (p < 0.001). Conclusion Considering the occurrence of vaginal delivery, it is concluded that the interaction between the mother-child dyad is quantitatively larger and qualitatively better when compared with intrapartum or elective cesarean section.

RESUMO O objetivo foi investigar a relação da carga interna de treinamento (CIT), carga externa de treinamento (CET) e variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) em mulheres. 16 mulheres (48,2 ± 6,4 anos) realizaram medidas de VFC em repouso (variável lnRMSSD - modulação cardiovagal) e o teste incremental de caminhada (TIC) antes e depois de 12 semanas de treinamento aeróbio. O limiar da VFC (LVFC) foi utilizado para prescrição da CET. A percepção subjetiva de esforço (PSE) foi utilizada para cálculo da CIT. O valor de CIT encontrado nas 12 sessões foi de 2878 ± 380 unidades arbitrárias e para CET de 36822 ± 5852 m. Foi observada diferença significativa para lnRMSSD (3,14 ± 0,30 vs. 3,43 ± 0,38 ms−1; P = 0.001). Verificou-se uma correlação grande entre lnRMSSD basal e TIC (r = 0.73, P = 0.001), LVFC (r = 0.67, P = 0.004) e CIT (r = 0.62, P = 0.011). Foi encontrada uma correlação muito grande entre a mínima diferença detectável individual do lnRMSSD após treinamento e CIT. Conclui-se que há uma forte relação entre VFC e performance aeróbia (LVFC e TICdistância), VFC e acúmulo de CIT, porém, sem relação com a CET acumulada nas 12 semanas nas mulheres estudadas.

ABSTRACT The purpose was to investigate the relationship between internal training load (ITL), external training load (ETL) and heart rate variability (HRV) in women. 16 women (48.2 ± 6.4 yrs) performed HRV recordings (i.e. lnRMSSD - cardiovagal modulation) and Incremental Shuttle Walk Test (ISWT) before and after 12 aerobic training sessions. HRV threshold (HRVT) were used to prescribe aerobic ETL. The session rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) was analyzed and served as the measure of ITL. The score found for ITL in the 12 sessions was 2878 ± 380 arbitrary units and ETL were 36822 ± 5852 m. A significant difference was observed in the lnRMSSD (3.14 ± 0.30 vs. 3.43 ± 0.38 ms−1; P = 0.001). There were observed large correlation between lnRMSSD at baseline vs ISWT (r = 0.73, P = 0.001), HRVT (r = 0.67, P = 0.004) and ITL (r = 0.62, P = 0.011). Very large correlation between individual smallest worthwhile change lnRMSSD after training and ITL (r = 0.81, P = 0.0001) was observed. There is a strong association between the HRV and aerobic performance (HRVT and ISWTdistance) and strong relationship between HRV and the potential to accumulate ITL, but not aerobic ETL in women.

Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the external load of amateur male players during 4 consecutive training microcycles (M) at the beginning of the in-season according to the training session in absolute external load demands and in relation to the competition demands. Methods: Regional-level players (n = 10; age, 20.8 ± 1.7 years; height, 175.5 ± 3.8 cm; body mass, 69.7 ± 2.9 kg; soccer experience, 13.2 ± 2.5 years) were monitored using GPS devices during training sessions and matches. The external load variables measured were: duration (min); total distance covered (TD); distance covered at high-speed (HID, 14.4-19.8 km/h); distance covered at sprinting (SPD; >19.8 km/h); and distance covered in high intensity acceleration (ACD; >2.5 m/s2) and deceleration (DECD; <-2.5 m/s2). Results: The results indicated that the external load variables (time, HID, SPD, ACD, and DECD) were similar between the four microcycles. Greater (p<0.01) time, TD, HID and SPD were observed in match day (MD)-2 compared to MD+1, MD-3, and MD-1. Aside from training duration, all external loads variables (TD, HID, SPD, ACD, and DECD) were lower during training sessions compared to official matches (p<0.05). Conclusion: Amateur soccer players present relative stable external training loads across competitive microcycles, with the peak load observed two days before the official match. Besides this, the match constitutes the highest load during a typical competitive microcycle in this cohort of players.

RESUMO O cultivo de Piper aduncum para a extração de óleo essencial é crescente, mas carece de informações básicas de manejo e cultivo, que possibilitem produtividade e qualidade do produto para atender a demanda de mercado. Objetivou-se avaliar a relação entre a produção de óleos essenciais em P. aduncum e tensões de água no solo (20 kPa, 40 kPa, 60 kPa, 100 kPa e sem irrigação). Foram avaliados o número de idioblastos e a produção de óleo essencial em folhas de plantas cultivadas. A variação na tensão de água no solo altera a quantidade de idioblastos nas folhas de P. aduncum, com reflexo na produção de óleo essencial. A tensão de água no solo de 20-60 kPa é suficiente para a planta expressar o maior número de idioblastos e maior produção de óleo essencial. A espécie se adapta a diferentes condições de disponibilidade de água no solo. Em condições de estresse, devido ao déficit ou excesso de água, a produção de óleo essencial é reduzida.

ABSTRACT The growing of Piper aduncum for essential oil extraction has increased, but there is a lack of basic information about its management and cultivation, which allows the productivity and quality of the oil, in order to attend the market demands. This study aimed to evaluate the relation between the production of essential oils from P. aduncum and soil water pressure heads (20 kPa, 40 kPa, 60 kPa, 100 kPa and non-irrigated). The assessment comprised the quantification of idioblasts and the production of essential oil extracted from leaves of cultivated plants. The variation in the soil water pressure head alters the amount of idioblasts in P. aduncum leaves, with impacts on the essential oil production. A soil water pressure head range of 20-60 kPa is sufficient for this species to express the highest amount of idioblasts and the highest level of essential oil production. The species adapts itself to different water availability conditions in the soil. Under stress conditions, due to water deficit or excess, the production of essential oil is reduced.

RESUMO Introdução: Este estudo envolveu uma análise do impacto da fadiga mental sobre a recuperação da frequência cardíaca (RFC), medidas subjetivas de fadiga e desempenho de corrida intermitente em jogadores de handebol. Objetivo: Este estudo visou (1) examinar os efeitos de um estado induzido de fadiga mental no desempenho aeróbico de jogadores de handebol, medido pelo teste Yo-Yo IR1 e (2) explorar possíveis alterações na regulação da frequência cardíaca através da análise da RFC. Métodos: Doze jogadores de handebol (idade: 17,50 ± 3,63 anos, 5 ± 2,2 anos de prática) realizaram um teste Yo-Yo IR1 em duas ocasiões, com pelo menos 72 horas de intervalo. O teste Yo-Yo IR1 foi precedido por tratamento de 30 minutos que consistiu no teste Stroop Color-Word para induzir estado de fadiga mental. Os participantes na condição de controle assistiram a um vídeo emocionalmente neutro. Resultados: Foram observadas taxas mais elevadas de fadiga mental e esforço mental após o teste Stroop para o grupo experimental. Não foram observadas diferenças na motivação entre as condições. Além disso, a indução de fadiga mental prejudicou o desempenho de corrida e levou a maior PSE durante o teste Yo-Yo IR1. Não obstante, não foram observadas alterações na RFC nem nas concentrações de lactato sanguíneo entre as condições. Conclusão: Em conjunto, esses resultados sugerem que a fadiga mental afeta o desempenho de corrida intermitente, sem alterar os valores de RFC. Nível de Evidência III; Estudo de caso-controle.

ABSTRACT Introduction: This study involved an analysis of the impact of mental fatigue on heart rate recovery (HRR), subjective measures of fatigue and intermittent running performance in handball players. Objective: This study was aimed at (1) examining the effects of an induced state of mental fatigue on the aerobic performance of handball players, as measured by the Yo-Yo IR1 test, and (2) exploring possible changes in heart rate regulation through HRR analysis. Methods: Twelve handball players (age: 17.50 ± 3.63 years; 5 ± 2.2 years of practice) undertook a Yo-Yo IR1 test on two occasions, separated by an interval of at least 72 hours. The Yo-Yo IR1 test was preceded by a 30-min treatment, consisting of the Stroop Color-Word Test, to induce mental fatigue. Participants in the control condition watched an emotionally neutral video. Results: Higher ratings of mental fatigue and mental effort following the Stroop Test were observed for the experimental group. No differences in motivation were observed between conditions. Moreover, the induction of mental fatigue impaired running performance and led to a higher RPE during the Yo-Yo IR1 test. Notwithstanding, no changes in HRR or blood lactate levels were observed across conditions. Conclusion: Altogether, these results suggest that mental fatigue impairs intermittent running performance, without affecting HRR values. Level of Evidence III; Case-Control study.

RESUMEN Introducción: En el presente estudio se analizó el impacto de la fatiga mental en la recuperación de la frecuencia cardíaca (RFC), las medidas subjetivas de fatiga y el rendimiento intermitente en atletas de handball. Objetivo: los objetivos de este estudio fueron (1) examinar los efectos de un estado inducido de fatiga mental en el rendimiento aeróbico de atletas de handball, medida por el Yo-Yo IR1, y (2) explorar las posibles alteraciones en la regulación de la frecuencia cardíaca a través del análisis RFC. Métodos: Doce atletas (edad: 17,50 ± 3,63 años, 5 ± 2,2 años de práctica) realizaron un test Yo-Yo IR1 en dos ocasiones, separados por un intervalo de al menos 72 horas. El test Yo-Yo IR1 fue precedido por un tratamiento de 30 minutos, consistente en el Stroop Color-Word Test, para inducir un estado de fatiga mental. Los participantes en la condición de control asistieron un video emocionalmente neutro. Resultados: Se observaron altas percepciones de fatiga y esfuerzo mental después del test de Stroop para el grupo experimental. No se observaron diferencias de motivación entre las condiciones. Además, la inducción de fatiga mental perjudicó el desempeño de carrera y llevó a un mayor PSE durante el test Yo-Yo IR1. No obstante, no se observaron alteraciones en la RFC y en las concentraciones de lactato sanguíneo entre las condiciones. Conclusión: En conjunto, estos resultados sugieren que la fatiga mental afecta el rendimiento intermitente de la carrera, sin alterar los valores de FCR. Monitoring training load in beach volleyball players: a case study with an Olympic team

Abstract AIM Describe and compare training load dynamics of two Olympic beach volleyball players. METHODS Two Olympic beach volleyball players participated in this study (specialist defender and blocker: both aged 34 years, holding 14 years of competitive experience, height: 1.74 m and 1.81 m, weight: 69 kg and 65 kg, respectively). Internal training load (ITL), total weekly training load (TWTL), monotony and strain were obtained through the session rating of perceived exertion (session-RPE) for three training mesocycles (10 weeks). Lower limb explosive power was assessed through the counter movement jump (CMJ). RESULTS Mean ITL, TWTL, monotony and strain during the 10-week period were: 370 ± 156; 1997 ± 838; 2.7 ± 1.3; 5621 ± 1802 arbitrary units (AU) (Defender) and 414 ± 153; 2392 ± 892; 2.7 ± 1.1; 6894 ± 3747 (AU) (Blocker). Mean of CMJ height was 47.0 ± 1.3 and 40.3 ± 1.6 cm, for the defender and blocker, respectively. The defender player presented higher ITL in the second (effect size (ES) = 0.90; 92/5/3, likely) and in the third (ES = 0.91; 94/4/2, likely) mesocycles when compared to the first. Monotony raised from the first to the third mesocycle (ES = 2.91; 98/1/1, very likely). Blocker’s ITL was higher in the third mesocycle than the first (ES = 1.42. 98/1/1, very likely) and the second (ES = 1.49; 98/1/1, likely) ones. CONCLUSION ITL magnitude increased from the first to the third mesocycle, in both players.

Resumo A transferência de energia aeróbia é altamente necessária e representa mais de 90% do consumo total de energia durante um jogo no futebol. Ademais, a alta aptidão aeróbia contribui para a recuperação durante exercício intermitente de alta intensidade, específico do desempenho do futebol. O objetivo deste estudo foi examinar se o pico de velocidade no teste de Carminatti (PVT-CAR) para a prescrição de treino intervalado é funcional na obtenção de desenvolvimento de aptidão aeróbia em jogadores de futebol. Quinze jogadores de futebol brasileiros (Sub-20) foram testados no T-CAR e monitorados por freqüência cardíaca (FC) durante o treinamento intervalado prescrito por PVT-CAR (ou seja, 4x4min com recuperação passiva de 3min). Os treinos foram realizados com uma relação de trabalho e repouso de 1:1 com corrida em linha reta (6/6s) e corrida de 180° com mudança de direção em vai-e-vem (12/12s). O treinamento intervalado prescrito com PVT-CAR induziu respostas de FC acima de 90% de FCmax, lactato superior a 4m.mol.l-1. uOs resultados de FC e lactato no treinamento de corrida com mudança de direção (93,3±2,1% FCmax; 7,7±1,4 m.mol.l-1) foram significativamente maiores que no treino de corrida em linha (vs 90,3±2,6 %FCmax; 4,5±0,9 m.mol.l-1). O coeficiente de variação mostrou baixa variabilidade inter-sujeitos na frequência cardíaca (CV 2,3 e 3,0% para 12/12 e 6/6, respectivamente). Os resultados do estudo mostraram que o PVT-CAR pode ser utilizado com sucesso para individualizar o treinamento de corrida intervalado de alta intensidade em jogadores com diferentes perfis aeróbicos. Os perfis fisiológicos e momentos de demandas se assemelham às fases mais exigentes da partida, especialmente para os jogadores melhor condicionados.

Abstract Aerobic energy transference is highly required and accounts for more than 90% of total energy consumption during a soccer match. In addition high aerobic fitness contributes to recovery from high-intensity intermittent exercise, specific to performance in soccer. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the peak velocity in the Carminatti’s test (PVT-CAR) for prescribing interval-training drills is effective in eliciting aerobic-fitness development intensities in male soccer-players. Fifteen Brazilian male elite soccer-players (U20) were tested for T-CAR and monitored for heart rate (HR) during PVT-CAR prescribed interval-training drills (i.e., 4x4min with 3min passive recovery). Drills were performed with a 1:1 work-to-rest ratio with either straight-line (6/6s) or 180° shuttle running (12/12s). The interval training performed at PVT-CAR elicited HR above 90% of HRmax and lactate above 4m.mol.l-1. In the shuttle-running drills, HR and lactate (93.3±2.1% HRmax; 7.7±1.4 m.mol.l-1) were significantly higher than in the straight line drills (vs 90.3±2.6 %HRmax; 4.5±0.9 m.mol.l-1). The coefficient of variations showed low inter-subject variability in HR (CV 2.3 and 3.0% for 12/12 and 6/6 respectively). The results of this study demonstrated that PVT-CAR can be successfully used to individualize high-intensity interval running training in players with different aerobic profiles, while shuttle-running drills presented higher values at intern load than straight line. The physiological and time-motion profiles resemble the most demanding phases of the match, especially for the fittest players.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo determinar os efeitos do uso da máscara para análise de gases sobre variáveis fisiológicas e perceptuais máximas e submáximas durante um teste incremental. Foram avaliados 21 corredores recreacionais de “endurance” (VO2max: 54,0 ± 7,6 mL·kg-1·min-1) com idade entre 30 e 49 anos. Os mesmos foram submetidos a dois diferentes testes incrementais em ordem aleatória para determinação da MVA, sendo utilizado em um deles o equipamento para análises de gases e no outro não. A velocidade pico em esteira foi determinada com base no ajuste de KUIPERS et al.17. Foram também analisadas variáveis fisiológicas (FC e %FCmax) e perceptuais (PSE) a cada estágio para comparação entre os protocolos. Os corredores realizaram uma performance de 10 e 15 km em pista de atletismo para verificar a relação com a máxima velocidade aeróbia obtida nos dois testes. O uso da máscara para a análise de gases reduziu a Vpico, mas não modificou a FCmax e a PSEmax. Em relação às variáveis submáximas, a FC foi influenciada principalmente nos estágios iniciais em que os valores foram maiores no teste em que a análise de gases foi feita. Porém, quando expressa em %FCmax, os atletas permaneceram na maioria dos estágios submáximos em percentuais maiores durante o protocolo com o uso da máscara. Para a PSE, não houve diferenças significativas, com exceção do estágio a 10 km·h-1, em que a PSE foi maior quando se utilizou a máscara. A Vpico é reduzida devido à utilização da máscara para análise de gases e a FC e o %FCmax em estágios submáximos são maiores devido ao uso desse equipamento, especialmente nos estágios iniciais.

Abstract This study aimed to determine the effects of using the mask to gas analysis on maximal and submaximal physiological and perceptual variables during an incremental test. We assessed 21 recreationally endurance trained runners (VO2max: 54.0 ± 7.6 mL·kg-1·min-1) aged 30 to 49 years. These runners were submitted to two different incremental tests in randomized order to determination of maximum aerobic velocity (MAV), being used in one of them the equipment to gas analysis and not in the other. Peak velocity (Vpeak) was determined based on KUIPERS et al.17 adjustment. It was also analyzed physiological (HR and %HRmax) and perceptual (RPE) variables in each stage to comparison between protocols. Runners did a 10 and 15 km performance in field track to verify the relationship with maximal aerobic speed obtained in both protocols. The use of the mask for gas analysis reduced Vpeak, but did not modify HRmax and RPEmax. In regard to submaximal variables, HR was influenced mainly in initial stages in which values were higher in the test which the mask was used. However, when expressed as %HRmax, runners remained in the majority of submaximal stages in higher percentages during the protocol with mask. For RPE, there was no significant difference, except in the stage of 10 km·h-1, which RPE was higher when the mask was used. MAV is reduced when mask is used to gas analysis and HR and %HRmax in submaximal stages are higher due to the use of this equipment especially in initial stages.

Abstract This qualitative-descriptive investigation examining the influence exerted by experienced soccer-players on the ranking obtained from the four best-ranked by their teams in the last four FIFA World Cups (WC). They were divided into experienced-players (at least one WC participation [+1WC]) or non-experienced players (no previous participation [1WC]). Thereafter, they were classified according to their contribution in each of the playoff matches in a given WC: STARTER (started all matches); START/SUBST (started at least one match); SUBST/BENCH (did not start any matches, but replaced a player in at least one match); and BENCH (did not participate in matches). The sample was composed of 33.7% experienced and 66.3% non-experienced players. The number of players +1WC in finalist teams was significantly higher than in the non-finalist teams (p<0.05). In addition, when compared with the non-finalist teams, the finalists presented significantly higher number of players STARTER with +1WC (p<0.05). Possibly, the selection of experienced players to participate in WC may be an effective strategy to achieve better competitive performance.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine if rating of perceived exertion (RPE) could be used to monitor the internal load during compounded circuit training (CCT) sessions in women. Thirteen young adults women performed three sessions of CCT varying the intensity according to participants' maximum heart rate (50, 70 and 90%HRmax). Throughout the main part of CCT (35min), HR and RPE were measured. Both variables were significantly different among the exercise intensities. However, HR and RPE were not correlated. Probably because HR at the end of exercise was similar to the beginning at 90% and 70% of HRmax intensities, and lower than the beginning instant at 50% of HRmax intensity, whereas RPE increased from the beginning instant to the end of exercise for all intensities. Therefore, RPE is suitable to monitor the internal load during CCT sessions in women due to its possibility to detect the (in)tolerance to exercise, despite of the lack of correlation with HR.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito do treinamento físico aplicado em um período pré-competitivo na potência e na resistência de força explosiva de membros inferiores, no estresse e na recuperação de jovens atletas de voleibol. Sete atletas (15,8 ± 0,5 anos, 186,1 ± 6,6cm, 75,9 ± 1,8kg) de uma equipe de voleibol sub-16, do sexo masculino, foram treinados durante um período pré-competitivo de quatro semanas. A carga interna de treinamento (CIT) foi monitorada pelo método PSE da sessão. Testes de salto vertical com contramovimento (CMJ) e de natureza intermitente, de quatro séries de 15 segundos (TSVI), foram avaliados no 1º dia de treinamento (linha de base), no último dia da 2ª (pós-semana 2) e da 4ª semana (pós-semana 4). O Questionário RESTQ-Sport foi aplicado na linha de base, no último dia da 2ª, 3ª e 4ª semanas (Pós-semana 2, 3 e 4). A CIT não foi diferente (p>0,05). O CMJ aumentou no pós-semana 2, comparado com a linha de base e no pós-semana 4, comparado com o pós-semana 2 (p<0,05). A média de potência nos 15 segundos iniciais e a média de potência das quatro séries de 15 segundos do TSVI foram maiores no pós-semana 4, comparado à linha de base (p<0,01). As escalas Fadiga e Lesões do RESTQ-Sport se alteraram ao longo do treinamento (p<0,05). Conclui-se que o treinamento aplicado durante o período pré-competitivo proporcionou incrementos no CMJ e no TSVI, e as alterações no RESTQ-Sport sugerem que os atletas apresentaram níveis adequados de estresse e recuperação.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of physical training during a pre-competition period on power and explosive strength endurance of the lower limbs, stress and recovery in young volleyball athletes. Seven male athletes (15.8 ± 0.5 years, 186.1 ± 6.6 cm, 75.9 ± 1.8 kg) of an Under-16 volleyball team were trained during a pre-competition period of 4 weeks. The internal training load (ITL) was monitored by the session RPE method. The participants performed a countermovement jump test (CMJ) and an intermittent jump test of four sets of 15 seconds (IJT) on the first day of training (baseline) and on the last day of the 2nd (post-week 2) and 4th week (post-week 4). The RESTQ-Sport Questionnaire was applied at baseline and on the last day of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th week (post-weeks 2, 3 and 4). No difference was observed in ITL (p>0.05). CMJ performance increased gradually from baseline to post-week 2 and from post-week 2 to post-week 4 (p<0.05). The average power in the first 15 seconds and average power of the four sets of 15 seconds of the IJT were higher in post-week 4 compared to baseline (p<0.01). Scores on the Fatigue and Injury scales of the RESTQ-Sport changed during training (p<0.05). We conclude that training applied during the pre-competitive period provided increments in CMJ performance and explosive strength endurance, and the changes in the RESTQ-Sport suggest that the athletes had adequate levels of stress and recovery.

INTRODUÇÃO: a imersão em água fria (IAF) é uma estratégia popular de recuperação, no entanto, há poucas evidências sobre a eficácia desse método no contexto do esporte.OBJETIVO: investigar o efeito da IAF sobre a dor muscular e o desempenho anaeróbio após uma partida de Futsal.MÉTODOS: dez jogadores participaram de duas partidas simuladas, seguidas por duas condições de recuperação randomizadas (IAF ou repouso passivo), separadas por sete dias. Durante as intervenções de recuperação, os jogadores permaneceram sentados em uma posição confortável (C) ou foram imersos em uma piscina com água fria (condição IAF; 15±1ºC) por 12 minutos. A avaliação da dor muscular, o teste de salto movimento contra (SCM), o teste de saltos repetidos (TSR) e o teste de sprints repetidos (TSPR) foram realizados antes da partida (PRÉ), imediatamente após a intervenção de recuperação (P1) e 24h depois da intervenção de recuperação (P2).RESULTADOS: foi observado aumento na sensação de dor muscular após a partida de Futsal para ambas as intervenções (IAF e C) (P1 e P2, p <0,05); no entanto, não houve diferença entre as intervenções (IAF e C; p> 0,05). Houve diminuição no desempenho anaeróbio (SCM, TSR e TSPR) imediatamente após a intervenção IAF quando comparado ao C (P1, p <0,05). Não houve diferença no desempenho anaeróbio entre as duas condições no P2 (IAF e C; p> 0,05).CONCLUSÃO: a IAF não melhorou a recuperação relacionada à dor muscular e o desempenho anaeróbio de jogadores de Futsal.

INTRODUCTION: cold-water immersion (CWI) is a popular recovery strategy; however, there is limited evidence of the effectiveness of this method in sport settings.OBJECTIVE: to investigate the effect of CWI on muscle soreness and anaerobic performance after a Futsal match.METHODS: ten players performed two simulated matches followed by two randomized recovery conditions (CWI or passive rest - C), separated for seven days. During the recovery interventions, the players remained seated in a comfortable position (C) or were immersed in a pool with cold water (CWI condition; 15±1ºC) for 12 minutes. Muscle soreness assessment, counter movement jump (CMJ) test, repeated jump ability (RJA) test, and repeated sprint running test (rRST) were conducted prior to the match (Pre), immediately after the recovery intervention (P1) and 24h after the recovery intervention (P2).RESULTS: a significant increase in muscle soreness after the Futsal match was observed for both interventions (C and CWI) during all time points (P1 and P2, p<0.05); however, no significant difference was detected between CWI and C interventions (p>0.05). There was a significant decrease in anaerobic performance (CMJ, RJA and rRST) immediately after the CWI intervention when compared to C (P1, p<0.05). No significant difference in anaerobic performance was detected between the two conditions at P2 (CWI and C; p>0.05).CONCLUSION: the CWI did not improve recovery related to muscle soreness and anaerobic performance of Futsal players.

INTRODUCCIÓN: la inmersión en agua fría (IAF) es una estrategia de recuperación popular, sin embargo, la evidencia de la efectividad de este método en el ámbito deportivo es limitada.OBJETIVO: investigar el efecto de la IAF en el dolor muscular y en el rendimiento anaeróbico después de un partido de Futsal.MÉTODOS: diez jugadores realizaron dos partidos simulados seguido de dos condiciones aleatorias de recuperación (IAF o descanso pasivo - C) separado por siete días. Durante las intervenciones de recuperación, los jugadores se sentaron en una posición cómoda (C) o se sumergieron en una piscina con agua fría (condición de la IAF; 15±1°C) durante 12 minutos. La evaluación del dolor muscular, la prueba de salto contra movimiento (SCM), prueba de saltos repetidos (PSR) y la prueba de sprints repetidos (PSPR) se realizaron antes del partido (PRE), inmediatamente después de la intervención de recuperación (P1) y 24 horas después de la intervención de recuperación (P2).RESULTADOS: la sensación de dolor muscular aumentó después de partido de Futsal para ambas intervenciones (IAF y C) (P1 y P2; p <0,05); sin embargo, sin diferencia entre las intervenciones (IAF y C; p> 0,05). El rendimiento anaeróbico disminuyó (SCM, PSR y PSPR) inmediatamente después de la intervención de IAF en comparación con C (P1, p <0,05). No hubo diferencias en el rendimiento aneróbico entre las dos condiciones en P2 (IAF y C; p> 0,05).CONCLUSIÓN: el IAF no ha mejorado la recuperación relacionada con el dolor muscular y rendimiento anaeróbico de los jugadores de Futsal.
